Visit the wine cellars of Moët & Chandon

The history of champagne in a maze of underground cellars.

Twitter icon

Moët & Chandon invites you to visit its wine cellars, the largest in the Champagne region. Discover endless underground galleries, filled with history, and round off your visit with a tasting of champagne!

The wine cellars of Moët & Chandon are located under the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. They are an exceptional part of the company’s heritage , and offer a unique chance to witness several centuries of champagne production. This treasure trove, the largest network of underground wine cellars in the Champagne region, preserves the memory of the talent and work of generations. Enter the 28 km of underground tunnels , the oldest of which dates back to the foundation of the company in 1743.

Dug from the colossal white chalk stone of the Champagne region, the tunnels spread across several levels under the city and provide the coolness and humidity necessary for the slow maturing of the famous bubbles . It’s in the calm of these underground cellars that Moët & Chandon champagnes develop their unique style , which is full, generous and dynamic in character.

In the half-light of this legendary underground labyrinth, explore the unique, intersecting tunnels!

Explore this legendary underground labyrinth and its numerous vaults. The bottles of the most famous vintages are kept well protected here. In the half-light, the guide leads the way through the intersecting tunnels, each slightly different from its neighbours.

Meet the wine experts , who will reveal the secrets of the making of Moët & Chandon wines and the heritage and craft which have been enriched and transferred across generations of wine-cellar masters. The wine-cellar visit ends with a champagne tasting session with the Moët & Chandon wine stewards, or sommeliers .

Magical receptions in a sumptuous setting

Moët & Chandon hosts all types of receptions in the sumptuous setting of its wine cellars. The Napoleon Vault offers a unique atmosphere in an exceptional location, and is ideal for gala dinners , cocktails, parties, etc. It’s a magical place in which Jean-Rémy Moët, the then mayor of Epernay, received the Croix de la Légion d’Honneur award from the hands of Napoleon , his friend and loyal client.

Above the wine cellars, in the magnificent Moët & Chandon vineyard , the nineteenth-century Orangerie opens onto an elegant garden, which is perfect for holding special events . The heart of champagne beats in these historic locations. An essential visit for wine enthusiasts!

Moët & Chandon Champagne History

Everything started in Epernay when, in 1743, a wine merchant named Claude Moët, opened his Champagne house, and began its production under his own name. Epernay is a thoughtfully chosen location. This town, capital of Champagne, is covered by kilometers of tunnels and cellars, and welcomes hundreds of Champagne houses: visit Moet & Chandon, visit Champagne Mercier , visit Champagne Pol Roger , … But it is only since his son, Jean-Rémy Moët, took the lead in 1792 that the house knew a real development and started its rise straight to success. Jean-Rémy Moët and its descendants will keep this key word in mind and won’t stop to build the brand within this creative and innovative dynamic.

Moët & Chandon Champagne is here to take the mood up!

Visit Moet Chandon Champagne France for a day trip from Paris with My Winedays ! Like his champagne, Mister Moët neve r showed up in a living room without chasing away the boredom

Comme son champagne, Monsieur Moët ne se montrait jamais dans un salon sans en changer l’ennui

A popular Champagne

Moët champagne was pretty appreciated by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his companies. In 1814 Jean-Rémy Moët got rewarded by Napoleon to the Légion d’honneur, the highest honor decoration in France. According to the legend, it is thanks to Napoleon and his troops that we now have the tradition of cracking open a bottle of champagne with a saber .

Moët & Chandon Champagne France traditions maker

champagne glasses cheers

It is in 1833 that Pierre-Gabriel Chandon, the son-in-law of Jean-Rémy Moet, joined the house. Thus was born the worldwide famous brand: Moët & Chandon.

Starting from there, the house has grown, grown and grown again. With the commitment of keeping on and highlight its innovative and sharing spirit, the house created multiple “champagne traditions” which are, nowadays, internationally known and practiced.

  • “Christen” a boat by smashing a Moët & Chandon bottle on its hull
  • The dizzying pyramidal champagne cascades
  • Spray with champagne the champion of a racing car competition

Why should you visit Moët & Chandon champagne France?

Nowadays, the Great House of Champagne Moët & Chandon and its 12 000 hectares vineyards impose itself as the uncontested Champagne leader in the world. Each year, the house sells more than 25 000 000 bottles: their Champagne, especially the “ Brut Imperial ” cuvée, is the world’s best-selling and will keep this ascendance crescendo. Also, it seems impossible not to talk about the great cuvée of vintage champagne Dom Perignon . Moët & Chandon house was the first one to bottle this famous champagne.

My Winedays will bring you to this amazing cellard tour! You will visit Moet & Chandon Champagne House with our wine expert guide, in the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay.

Then was able to get a hold of them through watssap, they said they tried calling me, never received a call. They said they called the number they had. When I asked for the information of mine they had, they sent me a receipt of some sort with information that wasn't mine, not my email nor phone number so I don't know who they called. They said they were sorry I missed the trip but it was my fault. If I would like they could reschedule for the next day at only 50% . I believe these people are experts at ripping people off. I seen on reviews now after looking up, they have done it to others also. Be careful, don't book with them Read more Written April 23, 2024

  • Dania M 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Doesn't happen how it's advertised. We had to skip the bus tour because of how this package operated. It shows the entire tour should be about 3 1/2 to 4 hours to complete. What they don't tell you is that the Eiffel tower, bus tour, and boat cruise are NOT lined up for you. The tour guide gets you to a certain point at the Eiffel tower, letting you know that you have 1 or 2 times to catch the bus for the city tour, and the cruise ticket is good all day. We had skip the line tickets for the Eiffel tower, but we were stuck in a line, which is why we had to skip the bus tour, because we had tickets for the catacombs at 6p.m. If I had not scheduled anything else for that day, we could have done all 3 parts over the course of the day. Had I known this 3 part ticket was not lined up in advance for us, I probably wouldn't have chosen this option. I assumed it would take 3 1/2 to 4 hours in one block of time, like from 12:15p.m. to 4:15, which, had it been like that, like I thought, we easily could've done all 3 things listed on the ticket. Just be aware, they get you to point A, but you're on your own to make it to B and C. Read more Written April 4, 2024

  • a_dr3_a 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t be late. To summarize it in one word, unresponsive. My husband and I were running late, while on our way to the spot I messaged the company via app to inform them that our ETA was going to be 5 mins past the 10pm set time for the meet up. No response. Once at the location, I spotted the sign. The company asks you to meet up at a very unostentatious location. So it took awhile to notice that there was a QR code to call and message on WhatsApp, no one answered our calls. No one answered the messages. After a few minutes of panic, I opted to try to meet them at the theater, luckily they had our tickets at the box office so we were able to watch the show. However, after the show we waited outside to see if we could spot the group so we could get the river cruises tickets and hopefully catch a ride back. There was no sign of the tour group in the slightest. So we grabbed a taxi and heading back to our hotel feeling quite defeated. To summarize show was awesome, tour experience was awful. Just don’t be late. Read more Written March 25, 2024

We soon came to realise that the independent growers in Premier and Grand Cru villages also produce some fantastic wines. These Champagnes are very reasonably priced, plus you will have fun tasting them. We have since visited many others and sometimes a few in a day. I hope you look forward to seeing these insights. Stay tuned for more champagne tours.

Is Dom Perpignan part of Moet et Chandon?

Until the 1943 vintage, Dom Pérignon was produced from vintage Moët & Chandon Champagne. This was then transferred to the dom perignon style 18th century bottles to go in the cellar. Since them Dom perignon has been produced. From the 1947 vintage Dom Pérignon has been produced separately from the start.

Champagne in Epernay: The Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour & Tasting

Moet & Chandon 2008 Vintage Champagnes

On my last visit to Paris, I spent the day in the Loire Valley in the midst of wine & castles so this time I wanted to see the Avenue of Champagne in Epernay, more specifically, I wanted to visit for the Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour and experience the champagne.  There are two ways to visit Epernay from Paris – one is by guided day tour (expensive – over €200 pp), the other is my do it yourself (DIY) version for under €100 pp.

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour – Reservations Required

If you want to visit the Moet & Chandon cellar tour in Epernay on your own, you need a reservation in advance.  Go to their website to request a date and time.  You will receive a reply in a few days (make sure to double-check the date/time as my first confirmation was wrong) with a reservation number.  When you arrive you need the reservation number and then you will be asked what type of tasting you want with the tour (each tasting type is a different cost).

The Avenue of Champagne in Epernay

The Moet & Chandon location is easy to find on the Avenue of Champagne across from the Tourism office.  From the train station walk straight, crossing the street into the park and then at the exit to the street, the tourism office is on your right while Moet & Chandon is across the road in front of you.

Epernay France Avenue de Champagne

Lining the Avenue of Champagne are many champagne houses, some that you’ve heard of and many others that you haven’t.  A few offer tasting rooms or outdoor patio spaces while Perrier Jouet is not open to the public.

Avenue de Champagne Epernay France

It can only be labeled “champagne” if it comes from this region of France.  They are quite strict with the name “champagne”.  In other countries, their sparkling wine is “Cava” in Spain and “Prosecco” in Italy.  All sparkling wines.

The Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour

Arriving at the main entrance there is a guard to check bags in front of the Moet & Chandon store (our last stop on the tour, lest anyone leave without a gift shop stop) and direct you to the reservations desk.  Walking up a few stairs into a new building, you are instantly surrounded by what looks and feels like a luxury hotel lobby in white.

Moet & Chandon Cellar tour house lobby

Approaching the front desk in the corner to check in, I provided our reservation number and chose our tasting package.  The main tour with one tasting is €23, two tastings €28 and the vintage tasting €35.  Children under 17 (no sips allowed) are €10 for the tour. Mom isn’t  normally a drinker and her champagne exposure has been at a few weddings over the years (and that wasn’t the good stuff) so we picked the regular tasting for her while I chose the vintage option.

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour and Tasting Tickets

Our guide arrived and our small party of ten followed her in the house to see portraits of the men who would start Moet & Chandon, the monk who inspired Dom Perignon label and then led to a room to watch a video presentation (offered in many languages). Once the video ended we would descend the stairs to begin the cellar tour (bring a sweater/cardigan/scarf as it is a bit chilly underground – the guide wore a coat).

Moet & Chandon portrait in Epernay

We would wander the stone halls (or streets with numbered caves) learning about the labor intensive process for the champagne to mature over many years and how the bottles are stores, stacked, moved and eventually become bottles of Moet & Chandon or Dom Perignon that is sold in stores around the world for people to enjoy and celebrate special occasions.

Moet & Chandon cellar tour

I’ve visited many wineries and cellars around the world including the Moet & Chandon location in the Yarra Valley of Australia but this cellar in Epernay was so unique because of its history (270 years young) and winding streets of nearly 17 miles of tunnels underground!

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour Epernay

Moet & Chandon – Champagne Surprises

One surprising fact is that the bottles are moved by card and loaded by hand.  Many modern wineries will have forklifts or other machinery to turn the bottles as I saw in Spain at the Bertha Cava winery.  The Moet & Chandon process is quite labor intensive.

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour Epernay

Another surprise was finding out that the champagne is made with a variety of grapes grown in the region from producers – M&C don’t own their vines or the grapes.  So each year the grapes arrive the folks need to try to replicate a taste that the consumer is familiar with.  Think how difficult that must be with the mix of grapes that through the season of nature’s sun and rain produce a different flavor each time.  The team at Moet & Chandon Epernay need to get the right blend and ingredients sorted to keep the product consistent.  They blend the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes to create their many varieties of Champagne – Imperial, Rose, Ice and others.

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour and Tasting

Vintage means it is uniquely original and the cellar maker’s interpretation of that year’s harvest.  The 2008 Rose that I would taste had been aged for 7 years.

Moet & Chandon 2008 Vintage Champagne

There is a lot of recycling when making wine and champagne.  The final bottle you buy is not the same bottle that went through the aging process. So on the tour we walked through a room of glass bottles.

Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour

Luxury Champagne Dom Perignon

The monk that has a champagne after himself gets special treatment in the hallway of the cellar.  The caves are reserved for quantity of champagne and Dom is produced in small batches which is why it is so expensive.  The process to go from grape to Dom takes more than ten years! While most champagnes are ready to drink when purchased, a bottle of Dom Perignon can be stored and enjoyed years after purchase (if you have the willpower to wait).

Dom Perignon Moet & Chandon Epernay

Moet & Chandon Tasting Room

As dark as the prior room was with the recycled bottles and the tunnels were lowly lit, opening the tasting room door and you are awash in light – bright light – so much light that when your eyes adjust you see that champagne is being poured waiting for your group to taste Moet & Chandon.

Moet & Chandon Champagne Tasting Room

The transition from dark to light alerts all of your senses so I think (but don’t scientifically know) it makes the tasting that much tastier.  Watching the pour, set the anticipation factor on high with no fanfare, we handed our tickets to exchange for our champagne glass(es).

Our little group kept to themselves so Mom and I toasted our last day in Paris.  As Mom rarely drinks alcohol, the Imperial champagne took time to get used to for her (at first – see the Concorde Room Review for more on this).  I had no problem with my 2008 Vintage glasses, preferring the rose over the brut.  Mom tried both of mine and agreed that the rose was nicer.

Moet & Chandon 2008 Vintage Champagnes

Moet & Chandon Gift Shop

Of course, no tour is complete without the gift shop visit except this is Moet & Chandon so the gift shop is a luxury experience, one that almost guaranteed I would be making a purchase.  Filled with a variety of champagne in all types and sizes as well as clothing and accessories, temptation abounded.

Moet & Chandon cellar tour champagne gift shop

Since we had to travel the next day on Eurostar to London, we didn’t want to carry large bottles so bought the cute little bottles of the rose champagne to give as gifts.  They cost €16 for each mini bottle.  We mentioned traveling so each bottle was bubble wrapped and then put into our bag.  This was good (easy to pack, safe from breakage) and bad (we couldn’t drink them now).

Final Tasting Notes – Moet & Chandon Cellar Tour

Even if you aren’t quite the champagne fan like Mom (I’d argue it’s because you haven’t been drinking champagne at all), the Moet & Chandon Cellar tour in Epernay is a fun day trip outside of Paris (one hour by train approx. €50 return per person) to experience the uniqueness of this town (which is easily walkable or you can take the little tourist train for a tour).  Mom enjoyed learning about the champagne process, seeing the history underground and trying her first glass of Moet & Chandon.  The Moet & Chandon cellar tour is a wonderful introduction to champagne and its storied history in France.

Thank you for your tour experience. We have also done the same in Reims. Since we have taken the underground tours of several houses, is there a way to simply taste at various houses for a fee? Did you get to sample Dom?

At Moet & Chandon we didn’t have an opportunity to taste without the guided tour. They do (or did when I was there) have a premium tasting (for a fee) that included a Dom. I didn’t sample Dom on this visit as I’ve tried it in the past at a few corporate events (when someone else was paying). As for the other champagne houses and vineyards, most had a tasting room on the main road (Champagne Ave) so you can wander about and try the various producers for a fee. The tourist office (and website) was good to map out our plan for the day

Hello Jetlag

Champagne Tasting in Champagne France with Moet and Chandon

On our day trip to Epernay, Nick and I had the opportunity to take a private tour at Moet and Chandon. We started the day with a simple goal of being able to say that we drank champagne in Champagne France, but we left with a completely new and profound appreciation for the bubbly wine.

Moet and Chandon

Avenue de Champagne

Avenue de Champagne is said to be the richest in the world. Spanning only .6 of a mile (1km) long, it’s actually underneath the ground where the treasures lie. In the limestone tunnels beneath Epernay there are 68 miles (110km) of cellars housing 200 millions bottles of champagne from the most prestigious champagne houses, such as Moet and Chandon, Perrier-Jouët and Pol Roger.

Avenue de Champagne, France

Moet and Chandon

Moet and Chandon is the largest champagne house in the world, producing approx. 28 million bottles each year. From start to finish, our time at Moet and Chandon was remarkably impressive.

Moet and Chandon, France

We began our tour in their chic white lobby where we met our guide, Lena. Lena explained the history of Moet and Chandon beginning in 1743 with a wine trader from Epernay named Claude Moet.

Moet and Chandon

You can’t visit the vineyards but Lena showed us an in-depth film detailing the production of Moet and Chandon’s champagne. It was fascinating and exquisitely shot. Not surprising as it seems no detail goes unnoticed here.

Moet and Chandon, Champagne France

Moet and Chandon Cellar Tour

Of the 68 miles of cellars underneath the town of Epernay, Moet and Chandon owns an impressive 17 miles (28km), the largest in the region of Champagne France. Between 30 and 100 feet (10-30 metres) below ground are the chalky caves where millions of champagne bottles lie tucked away for years. The cellars contain an ideal natural temperature and humidity level year-round.

Moet and Chandon Cellars

Lena led us down a staircase and it was as if we entered another world. Champagne bottles are packed tightly by hand into deep archways. Signs hang above each tunnel, written in secret code so that only the cellar master and his workers know which bottles are housed there.

Moet and Chandon Tour

At the end of one of the passage ways there was an oak cask on display. This was a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte, a regular guest at Moet and Chandon, and friend of Jean-Remy Moët.

Visit Moet and Chandon

By law, champagne must spend 15 months in the bottle before they can be released. Moet and Chandon’s non-vintage champagne has a minimum maturation time of 18-24 months, with their vintage champagnes taking up to 10+ years. With such an importance placed on the aging and fermentation process, we totally understood it when Lena mentioned her strong aversion to champagne showers haha.

Moet and Chandon Cellar Tour, Epernay

While in the cellars Lena detailed the intricate process of champagne making. Their champagnes are a blend from grapes from all over Champagne France as to properly represent the entire region. We also learned that 75% of their production is grown by small farmers with every Moet and Chandon grape being picked by hand! Lena explained everything to us from the fermentation process to packaging and distribution.

Moet and Chandon Cellar Tour

As we walked through the tunnels Lena shined her flashlight into the aging bottles so that we could see the sediment collecting in the bottom. Sediment settles during the fermentation process and it’s what forms the flavors. She also pointed out bottles that had exploded from the pressure. The exploded bottles remain untouched so not to affect the other bottles around them.

Moet and Chandon Cellars

The process is truly an art form and it’s clear that Moet and Chandon takes immense pride in their art

Dom Perignon

Dom Perignon Statue, Epernay

Moet and Chandon’s prestige champagne is Dom Perignon, one of the world’s most recognized and respected champagne brands. Dom Perignon was a 17th century Benedictine monk who is credited as being the pioneer in champagne making.

While in Moet and Chandon’s cellars, Lena showed us where some of the Dom Perignon bottles were. These vintage bottles will sit in the cellars for at least 8 years before they’re released, and Moet and Chandon will simply not release a vintage harvest unless it meets their high standards.

Aging Dom Perignon Bottles

The Tasting

After about an hour in the cellars we were dying to try some of this highly perfected champagne. Lena led us into the tasting room and introduced us to our sommelier, Jean Nicolas, the most champagne-passionate man I’ve ever met.

Moet and Chandon

Jean Nicholas demonstrated how to properly open a bottle of champagne and contrary to what I’ve been doing all these years, popping it 20 feet off the balcony with my eyes closed is not the correct way..

Moet and Chandon Champagne Tasting in Epernay

He poured us glasses of Moet and Chandon’s Imperial Brut and Rose Imperial while explaining how to best appreciate the champagne as we drank it. Jean Nicholas’ passion for champagne was so real. He talked about how much he loved it, how he drinks it every night and how champagne makes people happy. Whenever anyone speaks with that kind of excitement, you can’t help but get sucked in.

moet and chandon champagne tour france

After talking with him for a little while, he and Lena left us to enjoy the rest of our glasses in private. One of the most interesting facts we learned was that champagne remains in its original bottle until it’s consumed. So your fancy bottle of Dom once sat dusty and untouched for 8+ years. This tour gave us such a respect for the champagne making process and we appreciated every sip. It was such a cool experience.

Thoughts on the Tour

When deciding on a champagne house to visit while in Champagne France, Nick and I chose Moet and Chandon simply because of it’s recognizability. Our knowledge of champagne went about as far as choosing a bottle of Korbel at the grocery store and then adding it to orange juice. When Moet and Chandon invited us on a tour of their Champagne house, I definitely did not expect to love it as much as I did.

Moet and Chandon Champagne Tasting

This was honestly one of the most interesting tours I’ve ever taken and Lena and Jean Nicholas’ respect for champagne was contagious.

I read a TripAdvisor review that said they felt their visit to Moet and Chandon was pretentious. I don’t agree at all. What could be interpreted as pretentious came off to us as passionate confidence in a centuries old, perfected product. I just fell in love with the brand.

If you have the chance to visit the region of Champagne France, I highly recommend stopping by the largest and most popular house on the avenue.

A visit to Moët and Chandon in Épernay France.

If you’re planning a trip to France, then I suggest adding a road trip through the Champagne Region to you’re itinerary. First of all the drive through the Champagne route is just so picturesque.

We literally had to stop every few miles to take in all the scenery, grapevines as far as the eyes can see!

We also planned a visit to Moet and Chandon in Epernay France, and had an amazing time learning about the process of Champagne making.

How to get to Epernay France

Our road trip to the Champagne Region takes us to Epernay, France. Epernay is located in the Marne department of the Champagne-Ardenne Region of northern France.

It is less than a couple of hours away from Paris, and is known as the champagne capital of the world.

You can easily take the train from Paris to Epernay and make a stop at the Gare d’Epernay. But I suggest you take a road trip though the region, it’s absolutely beautiful!

Epernay is home to some of the worlds famous champagne cellars, including Moët and Chandon, located in the famed Avenue des Champagne. It is one of the top producers of champagne in the region.

Moet and Chandon Tour in Epernay France

Located in the heart of champagne country, Moët and Chandon’s extensive estate covers 2800 acres of vineyards.

Moët and Chandon is a French fine winery established in 1743 by Claude Moët, he began shipping his wine to Paris, and soon the wineries clientele’s included nobles and aristocrats, which also included King Louis XV.

A visit to Moet and Chandon in Epernay France

Our Moet and Chandon tour started with a short film about the companies history, which was very interesting. The wine cellars of Moët & Chandon are located under the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay.

Dug from the white chalk stone of the Champagne region, the tunnels spread across several levels under the city and provide the coolness and humidity necessary for the slow maturing of the famous bubbles.

It was really cold in there, but we were given blankets. Our little one thought it was cool, she felt like she was on an adventure searching for treasure!

A visit to Moet and Chandon in Epernay France

These tunnels were 28 km long and dates back to the foundation of the company in 1743. The tunnels were lined with bottles, some of which have been aging for years. It was amazing enough to be in these tunnels and witness the making of this famous bubbly.

I learned so much from the Moet and Chandon tour and have a newfound appreciation for champagne. For one, it can only be called champagne if the grapes are grown in this region of France.

The grapes have to be harvested within two weeks in September and must be picked by hand and gently pressed to make sure the color of the skin doesn’t leak into the juice.

Then they are fermented twice in the bottle to create their famous bubbles! I never really understood why Champagne was so expensive, but the tour really explained the whole process!

The story of Dom Perignon Champagne

Dom Pérignon is a vintage champagne, and is named after Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk who was an important pioneer for Champagne wine but who, contrary to popular myths, did not discover the champagne method for making sparkling wine.

Since it’s a vintage, it is only made in the best years, and all grapes used to make the wine are harvested in the same year.

A visit to Moet and Chandon in Epernay France

All vintages need at least 12 years aging to nurture it’s signature flavor, and that’s why it costs so much! Don’t know if I would purchase it, but do appreciate the care that goes into making a bottle.

All in all, we had a great time on the tour, and learned so much about the art of champagne making and it’s history. The best part of the tour was of course the free champagne samples, which include d some of their vintage bottles.
