The Night the Luxury Bus Disappeared

The soft-rock indie group Gayngs, fronted by members of the bands Bon Iver and The Rosebuds, rode into Austin, Texas, on October 8, 2010, to perform at the Austin City Limits Festival. It was to be the grand finale of a tour promoting their first LP, “Relayted,” but they never made it to the stage.

In a heated dispute over an unpaid bill, the driver of their luxury tour bus left town in the middle of the night and headed for Nashville with all of the band’s gear and musical equipment. They had no choice but to cancel, at the last minute, the gig they were scheduled to play for thousands of fans.

Soon after the devastating event, the band’s attorneys, Howell O’Rear ’07 and Chris Vlahos of Riley Warnock & Jacobson filed a complaint in Nashville alleging breach of contract and other tort claims against C.J. Curtsinger and his company, CJ Starbuses. The tour bus company is well known; it proclaims itself “Keeper of the Stars” on its Web site and counts the Allman Brothers, John Mellencamp, and Three Dog Night among its clients.

The band rented a bus and trailer from September 27 to October 10, but the owner demanded that the rental period cover extra days to drop off the band and return to Nashville. The bus company sent a contract with incorrect dates and charges, and a new contract was requested by Gayngs’ manager, Nate Vernon. There was an oral agreement between the band and the bus company in this interim period, and the band paid a sum of $2,939.44. A corrected contract never arrived.

The night before the festival, Curtsinger left a voicemail demanding that the rest of the rental fee be paid. The band’s manager replied that the group needed a revised invoice and rental contract before the balance would be paid. In the middle of the night, voicemails escalated to the point that Curtsinger upped the ante, leaving a message that the tour bus, still loaded with all Gayngs’ equipment, had headed back to Nashville. Vernon attempted to get the bus turned around by calling and trying to meet the bus in another city, but to no avail. Gayngs forfeited the $15,000 performance fee.

The complaint brought by O’Rear and Vlahos charged the tour bus company of engaging in “willful, wanton, malicious and oppressive actions” that led to the band members losing money in fees and travel costs, and suffering damage to their reputations when they were forced to break their engagement. Using emails, voicemails, and testimony, they convinced the jury that the band should be awarded damages.

“Other than the behavior of the defendants, one unusual thing about the trial is that the case actually went to the jury,” says O’Rear. “These days, businesses try to avoid the risk of an adverse jury verdict. Gayngs is an important, influential band with enormous potential, and the jury recognized that they were wrongfully denied a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play on a big stage at a major festival.”

O’Rear and Vlahos based a portion of their case on the band’s lost opportunity to play in what many regard as one of the four most important music festivals in the U.S. Bands that impress the Austin crowd stand a good chance to be invited to other festivals. After the jury returned its verdict in favor of the band on all counts, the court entered final judgment in the amount of $270,700 in damages, attorneys’ fees, discretionary costs, and interest.

O’Rear has previous experience representing music publishing and recording companies and protecting intellectual property rights. He also has a behind-the-scenes perspective on the music scene, having worked as a music critic and on Music Row in Nashville before attending the Law School. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy, which awards the GRAMMYS.

O’Rear considers himself fortunate to have experienced a jury trial this early in his career. “The classes and professors at the Law School,” he notes, “prepared me for every issue that popped up during the case.”

A Nashville jury awarded the indie supergroup GAYNGS over $100,000 in compensatory and punitive damages May 18 in a lawsuit the band filed against tour bus company C.J. Starbuses, Inc.

The 24-piece band is led by Ryan Olson and includes members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, and The Rosebuds.

“I am extremely relieved that the jury understood the turmoil, both emotionally and financially, the band has gone through as a result being forced to cancel our ACL performance,” GAYNGS’ manager Nate Vernon said in a press statement. “No amount of money can make up for being deprived of that show; however, the peace of mind which comes from justice is the next best thing.”

Attorneys Chris Vlahos, Howell O’Rear, and John Strohm, proved the bus company was deceptive in its practices and prevented the band from performing at the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival.

In October 2010, C.J. Curtsinger, the owner of the bus company, ordered that GAYNGS’ leased tour bus return to Nashville without notice. The bus contained the band’s gear, musical equipment and personal belongings. Curtsinger failed to return the bus to Austin despite numerous requests from GAYNGS, forcing the band to cancel its show, according to the group’s management. Curtsinger had claimed that the band failed to pay a $6,000 bill.

After the jury’s decision had been announced, GAYNGS tweeted: “Love this city and justice system.”

Gayngs Paid Damages After Tour Bus Fiasco

The supergroup Gayngs , which features members of Bon Iver (singer Justin Vernon), Har Mar Superstar , Solid Gold , The Rosebuds , Doomtree and many others, has won $100,000 (AU$95,000) in damages after being left stranded by their tour bus on their way to the Austin City Limits Festival.

The Music reports that Gayngs ended up missing their show because the bus, which contained all the band members’ equipment and belongings, drove off without them in the middle of the night.

A press release stated, “On May 18, 2011, a jury awarded the band Gayngs over $100,000 in compensatory and punitive damages in the trial of Gayngs LLC v. C.J. Starbuses, Inc. and C.J. Curtsinger.”

It was deemed that the bus company had “engaged in unfair and deceptive practices and that they maliciously prevented Gayngs from performing its concert at the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival.”

The incident occurred on October 10, 2010, when the bus company owner C.J. Curtsinger directed the leased bus to return “to Nashville without warning or notice.”

Curtsinger “refused to return the bus to Austin despite numerous requests from GAYNGS. Without its gear and musical equipment, GAYNGS had no choice but to cancel its highly anticipated Austin City Limits Festival show.”

Gayngs manager Nate Vernon is quoted as saying in the aftermath of the ruling, “I am extremely relieved that the jury understood the turmoil, both emotionally and financially, the band has gone through as a result of being forced to cancel our ACL performance. No amount of money can make up for being deprived of that show; however, the peace of mind which comes from justice is the next best thing.”

Don't cry for gayngs.

Ordering a tall-boy at Emo's patio bar, Ryan Olson looked the picture of contentment last Saturday night in Austin, Texas. It was easy to understand why when Gayngs -- the regional supergroup he birthed and nursed for more than a year -- took the stage about a half-hour later.

"What you saw at First Avenue was way different from what you'll see here," Olson promised. "This tour turned us into a living, breathing band."

He wasn't just blowing smoke (actually, he was, but never mind). Operating with a pared-down lineup from the 20-plus roster at the "Last Prom" shows at First Ave in May, Gayngs managed to amp up and finesse their slow, throbbing grooves and hypnotic melodies on a two-week tour that culminated in a two-gig stand at the Austin City Limits Festival.

The Emo's concert -- officially an ACL Fest after-party -- wound up being the experimental soft-rock band's final performance. As everyone who knows the band knows by now, the company that owns Gayngs' tour bus hijacked the bus and all of their musical gear over a contract dispute just hours later. Olson & Co. had to cancel their festival appearance the following afternoon in front of 70,000 prospective fans.

When the press release went out about the cancellation Sunday, I thought it was a ruse launched in a cloud of smoke by a band born on a wink and a smirk. It reported the bus stolen at 4:20 a.m. (420 is code to marijuana smokers on par with "Miller Time" to beer drinkers). Then the name of the little-known band that replaced Gayngs was Lance Herbstrong . Come on, really?!

Really. While Lance Herbstrong was onstage, members of Gayngs were on the phone trying to figure out how to get their gear back and get home. It would take them a couple days to do all that.

Other veterans of the road I've since talked to agree that the company was in the wrong, especially since the money from the missed gig alone probably would have covered the $6,000 bill that CJ Star Buses of Nashville claims it was owed. However, the concert biz isn't known for letting bands -- especially one together only a short time -- operate on credit.

Even though everything that came after it was a total mess, Gayngs' one and only Austin show can and should go down as a triumphant last stand for one of the more fascinating groups to come out of Minnesota (and Wisconsin) of late. Solid Gold singer Zach Coulter took the stage first, strategically placing more tall-boys around the stage in a true show of camaraderie. They played their album, "Relayted," in order, peaking early on with the hauntingly lush cover "Cry" and the just plain lustful "No Sweat," and then finishing off big with the outro "Faded High."

The band went a long way in a short amount of time, musically and physically. Among its tour stops along the way was a thoroughly charming performance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, " which Olson described as "kind of like doing an access-TV show, because everyone involved with the show was so laid-back and cool."

Fallon coolly Tweeted afterward, "We were melting over mega-awesome band @gayngs debut TV performance last night." The band earned another sweet Tweet off its Chicago show from Pitchfork.com founder Ryan Schreiber, who wrote, "It was seriously one of the best times I've had at a show all year."

The members themselves were clearly having a blast until the ugly side of touring hit them. Olson doubted all along, though, that they would do any more shows after Austin. "This is probably it," he said.

Saxophonist Mike Lewis was more hopeful about Gayngs' future: "Logistically it will be hard, since there are essentially 10 leaders in the band. But I think we all hope we can do it again."

Rapper-turned-soul-singer P.O.S. only made a few of the shows (including Austin), but even after the tumultuous finish, he said, "All of us look forward to what's next." And no matter what, he added, "all of our future projects are likely to be influenced by this one."

In the end (if it is the end), there were more good lessons than bad in Olson's experiment.

They will have to listen even more carefully for the uplifting elements of Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords, which releases their debut EP with a party Wednesday at the Turf Club (10 p.m., $5, with Zoo Animal's Holly Newsom ).

In the works long before Lookbook called it quits last month, the four-song collection comes off like a bleak, haunting sonic dirge with Cutler's deep, mumbly voice -- part Leonard Cohen and part Peter Murphy -- and the music's echoey, minimalistic arrangements à la the XX. The lyrics aren't light stuff, either. ("The hand of God is overwhelming," Cutler sings in "Hold on to Me.") He sprinkles in are some beautiful moments, though, especially when the closing track "Our Love Is a Mighty Fortress" almost turns into a spiritual gospel rave-up. Almost.

Random mix Grant Cutler crafted a new song with Jeremy Messersmith for an upcoming stage show at the Red Eye Theater, "Unspeakable Things: The Wandrei Brothers Project" (Nov. 5-20), which will also use new tracks by Ben Weaver, Ten Centuries, the Poor Nobodys and more. The Wandrei brothers are local sci-fi writers whose work inspired the songs. ... Messersmith recently got his geek on and recorded a song based on "Star Wars," titled "Tatooine," which is now (not surprisingly) a YouTube hit thanks in part to artist Eric Power's accompanying paper-cutout remake of jawas and whatnot. Gayngs Announce Tour, Remix EP

Last year, Minneapolis soft-rock supergroup Gayngs ended their tour early, when their tour bus driver disappeared because of an unpaid bill; legal action followed . Given the busy schedules of all involved and the general chaos of that tour finale, we weren't really expecting Gayngs to get back together anytime soon. But in the months ahead, the group will tour and release a remix EP.

Starting in March, the group will play another run of shows, including SXSW, Coachella, and Sasquatch. For these shows, the band's lineup will include Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce of Bon Iver, as well as members of Megafaun, the Rosebuds, Solid Gold, and Leisure Birds. At SXSW, Gayngs will have their own showcase at the Mohawk on March 17, featuring sets from Megafaun, Solid Gold, Doomtree, and more.

Gayngs are also preparing Affiliyated , a collection of remixes of tracks from their 2010 album Relayted . All the remixes come from members of the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree . The Affiliyated release date hasn't been determined yet, and it may turn out to be a free release.

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

On every station there is cashier and machines (you can switch it to English). Cards and cash are accepted. 1 trip - 55 RUB 2 trips - 110 RUB

Tickets for 60 trips and day passes are available only at the cashier's.

60 rides - 1900 RUB

1 day - 230 RUB 3 days - 438 RUB 30 days - 2170 RUB.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

SamsungPay, ApplePay and PayPass cards.

One turnstile at every station accept PayPass and payments with phones. It has a sticker with the logos and located next to the security's cabin.

GETTING ORIENTED

At the platfrom you will see one of these signs.

It indicates the line you are at now (line 6), shows the direction train run and the final stations. Numbers below there are of those lines you can change from this line.

In trains, stations are announced in Russian and English. In newer trains there are also visual indication of there you are on the line.

To change lines look for these signs. This one shows the way to line 2.

There are also signs on the platfrom. They will help you to havigate yourself. (To the lines 3 and 5 in this case). 

One dead, 11 others injured after shuttle bus plows into group near Honolulu cruise port

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead and 11 others were injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver dropping off passengers near a Honolulu cruise ship terminal hit the gas instead of the brake, pinning several people against concrete barriers, first responders said.

Honolulu EMS said a 68-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and police traffic investigators confirmed she later died. There were four others who were seriously injured: A 67-year-old man, a 67-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man.

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii said the woman who died and the four others who were seriously injured are from Illinois, and that they are being offered assistance.

Additionally, a man in his 70s was taken to the hospital in stable condition while six other adults, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s, suffered minor injures and declined transport.

Multiple EMS units with paramedics and EMTs responded to the scene at Pier 2 about 10:20 a.m.

Honolulu police said the incident happened in a private parking lot when a 57-year-old driver dropping people off and picking others up was notified that his vehicle was moving forward. He jumped into the driver’s seat to stop it, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

Florida ER nurse Janet Lightfoot, on a cruise with her mom, jumped into action to help.

The two had just disembarked Friday morning and were waiting for a shuttle to go shopping when they saw a bus with a Hilo Hatties logo heading toward a crowd of people.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd,” she said.

“It just kept going until it hit the wall there. Big cement block was pushed out and the bus hit into the wall. I ran over and kind of started triaging people and trying to help.”

Lightfoot said she’s accustomed to seeing traumatic injuries, but “this is just different.”

“We’re on vacation. The husband of one of the family members was there and just sad.”

Bystanders said the chaotic scene unfolded in seconds.

“It was shocking,” said witness Mike Frost.

Added Linda Reck, also visiting from Florida, “It just kept going and and my daughter yells out, ‘There’s nobody driving the bus.’ And then poof, it hits the wall.”

Honolulu police said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash.

I visited the 'Game of Thrones' studio 5 years after the series finale. The $37 tour reminded me why I love the show.

• I recently visited the Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Northern Ireland for $37.
• It offers an exclusive look at the HBO series , which spent millions of dollars on each episode.
• Even five years after the series finale, the studio is still a worthwhile experience for fans. 

It's been five years since the series finale of HBO's "Game of Thrones," but I'm as big a fan as ever.

When a work trip took me to Northern Ireland , I knew I had to detour to the Game of Thrones Studio Tour. By season eight, the HBO drama was spending $15 million per episode , and like any true fan, I wanted a behind-the-scenes look at where some of that money went — and what made the show so visually incredible.

The tour, located in one of the show's original filming locations , Linen Mill Studios, opened in 2022, and standard tickets cost £29.50, or about $37.

I wanted to see just how relevant the studio is today — especially in the lead-up to the new season of the "House of the Dragon" prequel series in June — and if the widespread passion of the fandom is still alive.

It felt like the studio was hidden in plain sight.

There's no onsite parking at the studio, so getting there felt like being escorted to some secret location. Luckily, the instructions were clear: Meet at The Boulevard, a large shopping district in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

From there, a complimentary shuttle took me down a long, formal-looking driveway. It's easy to see how the studio remained low-key during its filming heyday — it's almost as if it's hidden in plain sight.

My excitement overflowed as I stepped off the bus to blasting theme music and a massive Game of Thrones Studio Tour sign. About 10 other visitors immediately began posing for photographs.

After the 10-minute shuttle ride, it took me a good five minutes to reach security and start the experience, but the atmosphere was already infectious. Even the staff seemed genuinely excited to greet me.

The impressive theming immediately drew me in.

After passing a dragon skull and armored "guard," the tour started with a green-screen photo while we waited for some dramatic doors to swing open.

A tour guide quickly explained the studio rules — mostly, no touching the exhibits (which were used during filming) and absolutely no photos of the pre-tour movie.

I won't spoil too much, but the short film gave me goosebumps. At the end, the screen parted, and we entered the studio from "beyond the wall."

The studio clearly takes immersion seriously.

On the other side of the screen, we were blasted by fog machines before standing toe-to-toe with the Wildlings. Everything was incredibly immersive.

This was one of my favorite rooms. It had elaborate costumes from the show , including coats laden with bones and oysters. I learned that some weighed up to 15 pounds.

I also caught a glimpse of Wun Wun — or, at least, the costume that 7-foot-1 Ian Whyte wore during filming. It supposedly took the actor three to five hours a day to transform into the giant.

It was fun to walk through the different memorable sets.

The studio is made up of a trail of set rooms, including Mess Hall in Castle Black, the Crypts of Winterfell, King's Landing, and the Great Hall of Winterfell.

Costumed mannequins stood in each room to mimic the real scenes from the show.

I learned a lot about the making of the show throughout the tour.

In addition to walking through the sets, I got an insight into the show's creation process.

The 30-foot dragon skull of Balerion the Black Dread took six weeks to make before being shipped to Spain for filming. While standing next to the masterpiece, I could hardly believe that something of its scale could be transported across Europe .

Equally staggering, we learned that the crew went through 52,000 bags of fake snow and 163 tons of propane (for pyrotechnic effects) throughout the series.

Hearing about these intense behind-the-scenes efforts brought the series' magic back to life and made the visit worthwhile for me.

Behind-the-scenes exhibits and interactive experiences made the experience even better.

Other rooms were dedicated to the show's costume design , music creation, and set design. There was even a sword display room that housed famous props like Arya's Needle.

I'd nearly forgotten about the significance of the show's many props before embarking on the tour. But I almost squealed at Jaime Lannister's golden hand.

There were activities throughout the tour, too, including adding your face to the Hall of Faces and creating your own sigil.

I was entranced up until the very end of the experience.

The tour finished at the Iron Throne, a dragon flitting behind the rubble on a digital back wall.

It was a fitting endpoint seeing as it was the location where Jon killed Daenerys, controversially culling her brewing tyranny and ending the series.

I don't think the "Game of Thrones" buzz is going to die down anytime soon.

The studio wasn't packed, but Northern Ireland tends to be a little quieter in February and busier during the Easter holiday and summer. Honestly, I was grateful I missed the heavier crowds.

Overall, the "Game of Thrones" fandom seems to be building momentum rather than slowing down — especially with the second season of "House of the Dragon" looming.

I saw plenty of visitors bringing their children, too, so love for the series seems to be getting passed down to the next generation.

Initially, £29.50 seemed steep to me. But comparably, it's cheap for a studio tour — the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London charges a base price of £53.50.

Plus, I thought it offered great value. It packed so much in and the staff's passion is evident, which makes all the difference for visitors.
