13 Best Things to Do in Surabaya

Nestled on the northeastern coast of the captivating Indonesian island of Java, Surabaya, Also known as a “Kota Pahlawan” (Hero City), beckons travelers with its fascinating blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy. As the second-largest city in Indonesia, Surabaya boasts a rich cultural heritage, bustling streets, and many attractions that will captivate even the most seasoned explorers.

Join us as we traverse Surabaya’s attractions, offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant soul and unveiling the unique experiences that await within its bustling streets. For that, we have compiled the ultimate things to do in Surabaya, combining nature, history, and modernity for an unforgettable trip.

Walk around Wisata Mangrove

Located in Wonorejo village, around 16 kilometers from Surabaya city center, Wisata Mangrove is likely the best natural place and one of the best things to do in Surabaya. It offers a long jogging track surrounded by mangrove trees, along with a coastal atmosphere that is very refreshing in the morning. The entrance ticket is only IDR 3,000 per person.

I recommend visiting the Wisata Mangrove very early. The air tends to be cooler and fresher in the morning. I’ve once come here a bit late, and the weather is rather hot due to the scorching sun.

The available jogging tracks here are made from bamboo, keeping the natural feeling of this forest-like area. A pavilion built from bamboo in the forest’s center will allow you to rest and enjoy the scenery. Under the jogging tracks, the soils are like swamps, where you can find a lot of crabs, snails, and conch. Don’t forget to bring your snacks and drinks when you enter this forest, because there are no food sellers inside the forest. The available food stalls are located nearby the entrance.

Visit Surabaya Zoo

Surabaya Zoo, called Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS), is an iconic city zoo. It feels incomplete visiting Surabaya without coming to this one. One of the most famous zoos in South East Asia, Surabaya Zoo is home to more than two thousand animals from more than two hundred different species, including rare species from Mammals, Reptiles, Aves, and Pisces.

The ticket to this Zoo is only IDR 15,000 for each person, including children above 85 cm. You can pay for the access via an e-money application or in cash via the ticket booths.

Chill at Surabaya beach – Pantai Kenjeran (Kenjeran Beach)

One of the things to do in Surabaya is chill at beaches, and who would have guessed for a city? As two of the best beaches near Surabaya, I recommend visiting them here – Kenjeran Beach: Pantai Kenjeran Lama and Pantai Kenjeran Baru.

Pantai Kenjeran Lama offers a more laid-back shore with a tender breeze to relax your mind and body. The waves here are not too big, so walking or playing along the seashore is relatively safe. You can rent a ship to enjoy this beach more. It’s very cheap, with only IDR 20,000 for each adult. The ship will sail a short trip around the seashore.

As for the refreshment, you can enjoy culinary options not far from the beach. There are a lot of choices when it comes to eating on this beach. While enjoying the beach scenery, you can eat street foods and drink some soft drinks or various ice like Cilok (like meatballs, but less meat and more flour), Sempolan (fried flour shaped in bamboo stick with multiple flavors), Es Degan (Young Coconut Ice), Es Cincau (Grass Jelly Ice), Es Dawet (Ice Dawet), and many more.

Next is Pantai Kenjeran Baru. This new version of Kenjeran Beach is also called Pantai Ria Kenjeran or KenPark. The difference between these two beaches is more in the concept and the facility. While Pantai Kenjeran Lama (the older one) is more natural and less modern facilities, Pantai Kenjeran Baru offers more modern facilities and attractions without leaving its natural touch.

Unlike Pantai Kenjeran Lama, to enter Pantai Kenjeran Baru, you should pay an entrance ticket of IDR 15.000 per person. In Pantai Kenjeran Baru, many attractions are suitable for little children, like Water Park, riding horses, electric cars, Kereta Kelinci (rabbit train – small train to go around sightseeing), as well as new attractions with Chinese culture like Pagoda Tian Ti, Klenteng Sanggar Agung, and other unique architectural designs.

Refresh yourself at hutan bambu surabaya (surabaya bamboo forest).

Visiting Hutan Bambu, or Bamboo Forest, is one of the things to do in Surabaya. This new forest is located in the Keputih area, around 12 kilometers from Surabaya City Center.

This bamboo forest becomes another choice to refresh the body and mind after exhausting days of activities. It may remind us of Sagano Bamboo Forest in Japan. The beautifully lined bamboo trees offer this area a natural and relaxing atmosphere. The sun shines warmly along with the gentle wind.

Although called Bamboo Forest, the area has other parks like Taman Harmoni (Harmony Park) and Taman Ruang Publik (Public Park). Various flowers and bushes are planted to complete the forest’s surroundings.

You can walk and take pictures with your loved ones, sit on the available benches inside the park, or play with swings and other rides provided by the forest’s management. If you want to enjoy this forest, come during summer or spring, and avoid after rain because the grounds can get quite muddy.

Take the Majapahit Hotel Heritage Tour

Formerly known as Yamato or Oranje Hotel, this hotel has been stated as one of cultural heritage by the Surabaya City Government. This hotel holds many historical values of the hotel and Surabaya during the colonial era.

Today, the hotel management provides a heritage tour every day at 2 pm, arguably one of the things to do in Surabaya that you should not miss. The tour explains the history of the hotel and its role during Indonesia’s independence. The appointed staff will take you to some historical parts of the hotel.

As the last attraction in this tour, you will be taken to the hotel’s garden, which has a European style. Then, when you’ve felt tired enough, you can enjoy some refreshments the hotel provides, like tea or coffee with snacks. For this hotel tour, you must make a reservation first via telephone and pay IDR 100.000 per person.

Staying in Majapahit Hotel * while you are in Surabaya is also an excellent choice.

Shopping in Kampong Arab

Kampong Arab is located on Ampel Street. Just like the name suggested, this place is inhabited by society from Arabic descendants. The shops, food stalls, and restaurants all give Arabic vibes.

In this area, you can shop for items like perfumes, dates, raisins, and abaya or have some meals in Arabian restaurants that provide various menus like Nasi Kebuli and Nasi Biryani.

It is free to enter this Kampong Arab. You can go to this place anytime, but it’s better in the evening as more food stalls are open, and the market comes alive then.

Take pictures in Kampong Bulak

A small village with colorful walls and roofs can also be found in Surabaya. Come to Kampong Bulak for a fun thing to do in Surabaya and enjoy this unique village nearby Kenjeran Beach. Here you can hunt various Instagramable spots and take a lot of pictures.

Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of colors as you explore Kampong Bulak’s streets. Each corner reveals a new opportunity to snap an eye-catching picture against brightly painted walls and roofs. With its charming aesthetics and artistic ambiance, this village has become a haven for photography enthusiasts seeking that perfect shot.

Engage with friendly locals and learn about their traditions and customs, adding a cultural dimension to your visit. You may even have the opportunity to witness traditional activities or see artisans showcasing their crafts.

With only IDR 2000 for an entrance ticket, you can score amazing photos of various unique places inside the kampong (village) to post on your social media accounts.

Take a look at Suro & Boyo Statue

Your visit to Surabaya won’t be completed without dropping by this iconic statue of Surabaya. The city’s name itself refers to “Suro” (a kind of shark) and “Boyo” (a crocodile). People mostly come here to take pictures with the statue as the background. It’s located nearby Surabaya Zoo, so couple this visit with the zoo outing.

You also come to this place freely. The best spot to take pictures of the iconic Surabaya statues would be via Skateboard Park.

Ride a trishaw around Surabaya city

Another exciting thing to do in Surabaya in a new way by hopping on a trishaw, the charming three-wheeled mode of transportation that captures the essence of this vibrant city. Riding a trishaw around Surabaya is not just a means of getting from one place to another but an exhilarating adventure. Feel the refreshing breeze on your face as you weave through bustling streets, passing by colorful markets, majestic temples, and historical landmarks.

Engage with your friendly trishaw driver, who will share fascinating stories and insights about the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere, soak up the vibrant sights and sounds, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Riding a trishaw in Surabaya is an authentic and unforgettable way to explore the city, offering a unique perspective that will leave you with a sense of joy and wonder.

Visit the Monkasel (Submarine Monument)

Indonesia is known as a country with a sizeable maritime territory. Surabaya is one of the cities in the country famous for its harbor and maritime fleet. Monkasel , a submarine monument, has been established to commemorate the city’s maritime heritage, welcoming the public to experience its significance. The operational hours of this place are between 8 am and 9 pm. The entrance ticket is only IDR 15.000 per person.

This submarine monument is recognized as the most extensive submarine monument in Asia. The monument is built from a submarine named Pasopati 410, which is a submarine from type SS Whiskey Class. It has a vital role in defending maritime law in Indonesia.

The monument has seven rooms, including the torpedo bow and diesel engine rooms. It is also equipped with a commander’s room and crew room. Then there is also the main bridge and command center, which are close together.

Aside from the monument, the management also provides several other attractions, usually held on weekends. You can watch Reog Ponorogo (a traditional group dance) or go along the Kalimas River by motorboat. And, if you come with kids, you can also take them swimming in the children’s pool in the area. This destination is located on Pemuda Street no—39, only 1.5 kilometers from the city center. You can contact the management via phone at 031-5490-410 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Enjoy the sunset at Suramadu National Bridge

A visit to the Suramadu National Bridge is a thing to do in Surabaya for travelers seeking breathtaking views and a sense of awe-inspiring engineering. Spanning the picturesque Madura Strait, this iconic bridge offers a unique opportunity to witness the seamless connection between Surabaya and the island of Madura. Whether driving across or simply taking in the panoramic vistas, the Suramadu Bridge provides a memorable experience and symbolizes unity and progress in Indonesia.

To enjoy the Suramadu National Bridge, there are a few options for getting there. If you’re in Surabaya, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service to the bridge. Alternatively, you can hire a private car or join a guided tour that includes a visit to the bridge. Once there, take your time to walk along the designated pedestrian lane or drive across the bridge to fully appreciate the stunning views of the Madura Strait and the surrounding landscapes. Consider visiting during sunrise or sunset for a truly magical experience. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the beauty of this architectural marvel and create lasting memories.

The monument is a place of reflection, inspiration, and cultural significance, offering visitors a chance to connect with Surabaya’s rich heritage and the heroic spirit of its people. Our Guide to What to Do in Surabaya

pasopati travel surabaya

To be honest, I didn’t really know anything about Surabaya before coming here. It wasn’t on any wish list and we only ended up here as we wanted to see more of Indonesia and it was actually cheaper to fly Lombok – Surabaya – Jakarta – Singapore than any other combination (or flying direct) to Singapore from Lombok. It turns out Surabaya is a big hub.

Our  guide book only had half a page on Surabaya so that didn’t help either and blogs on the topic are also solely lacking.

Surabaya Heroes Monument entrance

Surabaya Heroes Monument entrance

Instead of turning us off from visiting Surabaya, it made us more intrigued. It’s fun to visit places that seem more unknown.

For you, though, it won’t be so unknown! Below you will find our guide to what to do in Surabaya, where to stay, information about visiting Surabaya with kids and other useful information we learned during our stay.

Best things to do in Surabaya

Surabaya is not a city filled with tourist attractions. However, there are enough places to visit in Surabaya to easily fill a day or two.

Submarine Museum (Monkasel)

Submarine Museum (Monkasel

The big submarine

Close to the heart of Surabaya, on the bank of the Kalimas river, is Monkasel (short for Monumen Kapal Selam), home to the KRI Pasopati. The KRI Pasopati is a former Russian submarine, in service in the Indonesian Navy from 1962 to 1990 and now it’s retired you can climb all through it! Surely it is one of the most fun things to do in Surabaya.

The submarine is not big, and at 76 metres long you’ll be through it in 10 minutes, maybe less. There’s not a lot to see or read but it is cool to look at. The submarine is little altered from its time in service (there were still labels in Russian everywhere) and it still has an oily smell throughout making it feel (to me) like it had only just stopped being used.

We all enjoyed our visit – it’s not every day you get to see something like this so close to its original state. It was well worth the effort to go.

In addition to the submarine there is a video room with a 15 minute video shown on the hour. Unfortunately, we just missed it. There’s also a small playground and a kiosk selling water, drinks and snacks. Entry is 10,000 Rupiah per person (no discount for kids).

House of Sampoerna

Cigarette columns make sure you know you're at a cigarette factory at the House of Sampoerna.

Cigarette columns make sure you know you’re at a cigarette factory at the House of Sampoerna.

The House of Sampoerna is a cigarette factory with a museum attached. Originally a Dutch colonial orphanage it was bought in 1923 by the founder of the Sampoerna cigarette company, Liem Seeng Tee. Part of the complex was coverted into a small museum and visitor centre.

The museum covers the history of Sampoerna and the rags to riches story of Liem Seeng Tee as well as looking at their most famous product, kretuk cigarettes (which have cloves in the tobacco). Although small, it is well laid out and interesting and even the kids were interested in the different things on display.

The highlight has to on the upper level. From here you get a view of the factory floor, watching women (they’re all women) roll and pack cigarettes. On the same level, behind glass is a crack team of rollers and packers at work up close. It was amazing to watch. One packer was going so fast it was like watching footage of someone being played at high speed. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed.

The whole thing was impressive and in spite of myself I wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes. We used it as an opportunity to talk to the kids about why smoking is bad.

The House of Sampoerna is one of the better tourist attractions in Surabaya. We all enjoyed our visit, especially watching the rolling and packing in action, and are glad we came. It’s up there with the submarine for our favourite tourist attraction in Surabaya. And it is free.

Surabaya Heritage Track

While you are at House of Sampoerna, you can also go on a cheap one hour bus tour of the city.  They leave at 9am, 1pm and 3pm. Unfortunately, I can’t give personal details of this tour. We are still bitter as our taxi driver ripped us off by driving straight past House of Sampoerna and then spent 20 minutes driving back – meaning we pulled up just as the 9am tour was leaving.

Qubah and Masjid Ampel

The very souq like part of the Qubah market district.

The very souq like part of the Qubah market district.

Islam came to Java through Arabic traders. The Qubah district of Surabaya is their legacy.

Qubah is a market area that features what Lonely Planet describes as a “Damascene” souq and is home to one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, the Ampel Mosque (Masjid Ampel).

In general, the Qubah area is like so many other market districts I’ve been to around the world. Lots of small shops buying and selling just about anything you could want to buy. Especially dates – they were everywhere (and tasty, too).

The streets get more narrow and motorised transport is banned the closer you get to the mosque. The way to the mosque is well signed so you can’t get lost although you might get distracted by the shops and food.

Masjid Ampel is roughly 600 years old. Originally built of local wood the mosque has been extended with the original structure incorporated into its current form. It was built in honour of Sunan Ampel, one of the earliest Arabic traders and Islamic preachers to make it to Java. It honours his work in bringing and spreading Islam to Java. He and his wife are buried behind the mosque and their graves are a point of pilgrimage for the devout from around Indonesia.

The inside of the Ampel Mosque. This is in one of the newer parts.

The inside of the Ampel Mosque. This is in one of the newer parts.

I was approached by someone who offered to show me around, wanting nothing and simply keen to share his mosque with me. We went to the mosque’s office to get a shawl like thing to cover my legs for which there was no charge. He ask I not enter the mosque itself – so I didn’t – but I could see inside. The mosque is simple, many wooden pillars and prayer mats on what looked like a marble or polished stone floor.

I was led down the side of the mosque to a guestbook and a donation box where I was asked to sign but not pressured to donate and then through a gate to the grave area. It was a solemn but bustling place with over one hundred people praying and many coming and going. No one seemed to mind me there but I didn’t feel right taking pictures.

Nearby the mosque’s office is the entrance to the souq like portion of the market. While I’ve not been to Damascus the undercover part of the market – a narrow corridor lines with shops either side – does feel what I’d imagine an Arab souq to feel like. It has a very different feel to markets I’ve seen elsewhere.

A mosque and a market aren’t everyone’s thing although for it was worth checking out. I’m not sure that bringing Z would have been a good idea (S would have been interested and could have been respectful). It’s an interesting area and different from what I’ve seen before.

Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlwan)

The Heroes Monument

The Heroes Monument

The Heroes monument is dedicated to those who died in the Battle of Surabaya, which started on the 10th of November, 1945. The monument is a obelisk just over 41 metres tall with a large patch of grass out the front. In that regard it is good for kids, there is plenty of space to run around.

There’s a museum behind the obelisk featuring a few exhibits from Indonesia’s struggle for independence with a focus on the Battle of Surabaya (where Indonesian fighters drove out British and Indian army units before being themselves driven out after three days of intense fighting, something not mentioned in the museum). Exhibits are labelled in Indonesian and English but there’s not much to see and the second floor of exhibits was closed. I found the museum interesting but its not for everyone, especially as there’s little to see.

Outside there’s an armoured car, field gun and some heavy mortars used during the battle that you can climb on and pose for photos with, which is fun.

Despite there not being a lot to see I found my visit interesting. Given the historical significance of the Battle of Surabaya if you’re thinking about what to do in Surabaya then the Heroes Monument is worth considering.

There are gates at each side of the monument but they’re locked. The only entrance is from the front. Entrance to the museum is 5000 rupiah. Everything else is free.

Masjid Cheng Hoo

The Cheng Hoo Mosque

The Cheng Hoo Mosque

A few blocks from the river lies this unique mosque, different from all other mosques we’ve seen in Surabaya. The mosque is built in a Chinese style, looking more like a Buddhist house of worship than an Islamic one. The mosque is named after the famous Chinese admiral Zheng He who had sailed to Java early in the 15th century. The mosque was built in 2001 in honour of his exploits and his contribution to Islam in Java.

The mosque is quite small and is swamped by the school that almost entirely surrounds it. You should have your knees and shoulders (and head if female) covered but there wasn’t anyone around to get a sarong or shawl from when I was there. The mosque is so small you can see all the way through it anyway.

It won’t take a lot of time to see but the Cheng Hoo mosque is one of the more unique places to go in Surabaya and worth a stop if you’re close by.

Chinatown/Kyu Kyu

The entrance to Kyu Kyu, Surabaya's Chinatown

The entrance to Kyu Kyu, Surabaya’s Chinatown

The top of Jelan Kembang Jepus is the start of Surabaya’s Chinatown. In the evening, after 8pm street food vendors converge here preparing food freshly bought from the nearby markets. I got there at lunch time and other than a dragon bearing gate there wasn’t much in the way of visible Chinese influence or street food – maybe I was looking in the wrong spot.

While I was here at the wrong time of the day, I have to say I was disappointed in what I did see. If you’re sightseeing in Surabaya in the evening it might be worth checking it out otherwise I’d give it a miss.

Museum Mpu Tantular

This history museum is located south of the city centre and could be worth a look with some extra time. More information here .

Ciputra Waterpark

With another day in Surabaya, we would have headed to Ciputra Waterpark which is located on the outskirts of Surabaya and sounds like the perfect place to cool down. Find more information here .

Surabaya with kids

Surabaya with kids at the Submarine Museum

The kids LOVED the Submarine Museum

Surabaya is an easy place to visit with kids. It’s a modern city with cheap taxis to get around, many eating options and some great hotels. I wouldn’t call it somewhere I would rush to visit with kids, but it is definitely not somewhere to avoid. In addition to the above activities, there is also the Surabaya Zoo and many shopping centres (which are seemingly everywhere) have kids’ play areas.

We opted not to visit Surabaya Zoo. A quick google will show you why! It has a terrible track record for how it keeps its animals and we didn’t want to visit somewhere that sounded so cruel.

things to do in surabaya indonesia Kiddoland

For toddlers and young preschoolers, this collection of rides and play areas in Tunjungan Plaza is sure to be a hit. There are some train, boat and car rides, and two different play areas.

Best places to stay in Surabaya

We stayed at the Wyndham Surabaya (formerly the Pullman Surabaya) which was a big hit with us!

Pullman Surabaya room

Our room at the Pullman Surabaya

For only AUD$100 a night, we stayed in a deluxe king room at this 5 star city hotel. Our room was very spacious and we liked how the bathroom had a window between the bathroom and the bedroom. There was also a great desk area, a fridge, safe, gown and fantastic wifi. Our kids were free in our room.

There are also many restaurants, a great pool area, fitness centre and other facilities you would expect in a great hotel. Although everything was good and I can not fault much, I would not describe it as 5 star. More like 4 – 4.5 star. For the price, however, I am certainly not complaining!

It is a great place to stay just a short walk to Tunjungan Plaza (or they have a free shuttle there) which gave us many eating and shopping options. There is also a supermarket super close.

The staff were great when we needed a doctor for our daughter too. It was all arranged quickly and efficiently. They came to us and gave us medicine, all for only about 350,000 rupiah!

Getting to Surabaya

We came to Surabaya from Lombok. There are plenty of flights, just like there is from Bali to Surabaya. In fact, Surabaya is one of the biggest air hubs in Indonesia so there are flights here from many places.

From Lombok, it was a quick 55 minute flight. We flew Garuda Indonesia which was great and only AUD$50 per person (not on sale). We were especially impressed when we were given food and the kids were given a choice of toys.

If you are going from Surabaya to Bali or vice versa, you can also travel overland via bus and boat. If you do this, consider stopping over at  Kawah Ijen .

We used taxis and cyclo rickshaws to get around Surabaya. These are cheap and usually plentiful. If you are off a main road, however, you may want to get the attraction to ring for a taxi for you.

The taxis used metres without a problem. However, we had a few go way out of the way of where we were going. One in particular really tried to rip us off and I hate to think what would have happened had I not had google maps and checked where we were going. This was especially annoying as the drive took twice as long as it should have and we just missed the heritage tour we wanted to do.

From the airport, there are many people offering taxis from a counter as soon as you exit the luggage area. It cost us 150,000 rupiah to get into town which was cheaper and nicer than the metre taxi we took back to the airport.

No Surabaya city guide would be complete without mentioning the city’s Cyclo-rickshaws. Cyclo rickshaws are plentiful in busy areas like Qubah or malls. Prices seemed to be in increments of 10,000 rupiah (maybe to keep things simple as many of the cyclo drivers spoke no English, it’s probably cheaper for locals) and some discussion might be needed to get a reasonable price. They’re reasonably comfortable and efficient for short trips as they dart in and out of traffic and take shortcuts taxis can’t.

Surabaya is pleasant to explore on foot, but not easy. Busy roads have decent, wide, smooth sidewalks however turn down smaller roads and these disappear. It can be hard enough without young kids as you avoid parked and moving vehicles and puddles. It was harder with our 3 and 5 year olds. Strollers would be nigh on impossible to use in many areas.

We spent about AUD$170 a day over our two nights in Surabaya which is not bad when you consider our accommodation was just over AUD$100 a night. This also included a relatively expensive room service dinner, all sightseeing and a lot of taxis. It would be easy to spend less.

Our verdict

Submarine Museum Monkasel

Exploring the submarine

Despite not being a lot to see in Surabaya there was enough that we’re glad we made the stop. For a city of more than four million people it is easy enough to get around and nice to explore, by foot, cycle and taxi. The list of tourist attractions in Surabaya is not a long one and it’s understandable if you give the place a miss.

However if you are passing through then there’s some great things to see in Surabaya and its worth spending a day sightseeing if you can. The House of Sampoerna and the submarine at Monkasel really were worth the effort as I’ve not seen anything like them before.

For us, Surabaya was a great entry point to the bustle and energy of the island of Java.

Surabaya ( Surabaya Javanese : ꦯꦸꦫꦧꦪ Suroboyo ) is a city on the eastern side of Java , the capital of the East Java province of Indonesia . It is the second largest city in the country with over 10 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. Complementing Jakarta , its larger brother on the western side of the same island, it sits close enough geographically to be exposed by the Javanese culture, while large enough to hold its people of multicultural backgrounds.

Understand [ edit ]

According to folklore, Surabaya's name derives from the Javanese words Suro , meaning shark, and Boyo , meaning crocodile. With over 2 million people, Surabaya is the second-largest city in Indonesia . While many people come for business, Surabaya is also a gateway city for Mount Bromo and Bali . The city's tree-lined streets and renovated pavements will impress those newly arrived from other cities in the archipelago, though in general the city's attractions tend to be more apparent to those who make it their home rather than to short-term visitors. Put in the effort here, and you'll have an authentic, fascinating, unique experience of an Asia that once was: get it while it lasts.

Climate [ edit ]

Very tropical and you need to wear casual, light clothes: T-shirts, shorts, sandals or shoes. Temperatures vary little through the year, with daytime highs around 32-34°C, falling at night to 22-26°C. During the rainy season (November–April) be prepared for occasional flash floods and traffic jams, and sometimes its almost as bad as Jakarta.

Community [ edit ]

Being simultaneously one of the most ancient and significant trading ports in Indonesia, a post Dutch-colonial city (the Dutch knew it as Soerabaja ), and having passed through brief Japanese control during WWII, Surabaya has a complex and patchwork heritage. It's not unusual to meet Surabaya locals with heritage from other parts of Indonesia, all parts of south-eastern China, the Middle East or Europe. Surabaya was also one of the only places in Indonesia with a synagogue; it was demolished in 2013.

Talk [ edit ]

While the Chinese were the first to record the area in the 13th century under the name 重迦廬 ( zhonggala ; apparently after the then-current local kingdom Jungala ), local Chinese now know the city as 泗水 ( sishui ), while some further afield call it by a transliterated name 苏腊巴亚 ( sulabaya ).

Surabaya has two main station for long distance trains, -7.24828 112.731122 2 Surabaya Pasar Turi and -7.265516 112.751998 3 Surabaya Gubeng , both located at the heart of downtown Surabaya. Pasar Turi serves executive air-conditioned trains from Jakarta, Semarang, and all of Java's northern coast; while Gubeng is the terminus station for mainly economy class trains and trains for southern and eastern Java, including Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Banyuwangi for the ferry to Bali. Slow and packed local economy-class trains from Malang arrive at -7.242993 112.740748 4 Surabaya Kota station (also known as Semut ) and passing through Gubeng station as they come in from the south.

Seats in Eksekutif (first class) and Bisnis (second class) for any intercity journey can be reserved from 90 days in advance up to 24 hours before departure at any major railway station in Java through e-kiosks serve by yourself. The main harbour is -7.19797 112.734276 5 Tanjung Perak , at the northern end of Jl. Perak Timur road is about 4 km north of downtown.

  • Angkutan Sungai Danau dan Penyeberangan ( ASDP ): Daily ferry service from Ujung Kamal and Madura
  • Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia ( PELNI ): Runs passenger ships from a large number of port cities throughout Indonesia.

By bus [ edit ]

Surabaya has frequent bus connections from all parts of East Java and from major cities in other parts of Java and beyond. The main bus terminal is at -7.350831 112.724729 6 Purabaya Bus Terminal (also known as Bungurasih ), about 10 km south of the city.

Note: The names "Purabaya Terminal" and "Bungurasih Terminal" are used interchangeably to refer to Surabaya's main bus terminal. "Purabaya" is the correct name but it is sometimes called "Bungurasih" because it is located in Bungurasih.

There are many people inside the terminal trying to solicit passengers to the bus of the company from which they get a commission, and they are especially bothersome to the foreigners. If you follow them to the bus, you are likely to get offered an inflated (Rp 200,000 or even more to Bali) price, even though there's an official price list (you can see it at the exit to the platform). Ticket offices do not guarantee you to be safe from overcharging - most of them are private, and there's no price posted on the window, so shop around. It may make sense to bargain if the price is certainly too high. Prices may be slightly higher during high-demand periods like weekends and public holidays.

There are frequent buses from Malang (Rp 30,000 for air conditioned, less for "ekonomi" ) and Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo , Rp 30,000), so just turn up.

To Denpasar in Bali , fair price is Rp 200,000-280,000 by eksekutif night bus, including the ferry trip between Banyuwangi and Gilimanuk , mineral water and a meal. Buses depart from Bungurasih bus terminal in Surabaya, and arrive in Mengwi bus terminal in Denpasar . Duration: 10-12 hr.

A ticket to Jakarta should cost Rp 250,000-350,000 in eksekutif bus. On average, eksekutif bus bound for Jakarta will head to Jakarta via the Trans-Java Toll Road , which allows direct travel from Surabaya to Jakarta via toll roads more quickly. The travel time for eksekutif bus via the Trans-Java Toll Road generally ranges from 10-12 hours with 1 or 2 rest stops on the way (20–30 minutes each), and at least some traffic jams near Jakarta.

Another option is to go by minibus (known in Indonesia as travel ). A number of companies run door-to-door minibus services from and to major destinations in Java , including Malang and Yogyakarta . These services are both more convenient and more expensive than public buses. Seats can be booked in advance through company offices, and also through many hotels and travel agents.

By car [ edit ]

Surabaya is well connected from a few of Java island's large cities, thanks to the Trans-Java toll road . Surabaya is reachable in 12 hours from the west end of the island at the Merak ferry crossing to Sumatra , 9 hours from Jakarta , 4 hours from Semarang , 3.5 hours from Solo , 2 hours from Ngawi and less than 1.5 hours from Malang . From the neighboring Madura Island, the Suramadu bridge crosses the Madura strait, for free.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis are plentiful on the streets of Surabaya. Some taxis are not renowned for their reliability so stick to the well known firms:

  • Blue Bird Group , ☏ +62 31 3721234 .
  • Orenz Taxi , ☏ +62 31 8799999 .
  • Silver and Express .
  • Zebra Taxi , ☏ +62 31 8416666 .

Always insist on a metered fare. Figure on Rp 20,000 for a cross-town trip and Rp 70,000 to the airport. Drivers will expect a minimum fare of Rp 15,000 for short trips and for longer trips, pay the fare shown on the meter rounded up to the nearest multiple of Rp 1,000. Drivers will appreciate a tip of a few thousand rupiah. Blue Bird has increased its minimum payment to Rp 25,000, but it's still the most reliable taxi company.

A trip from Stasiun Gubeng to Pasar Keputran should cost around Rp 20,000.

By becak [ edit ]

Becak (cycle rickshaw) are a traditional form of transportation in Surabaya. Surprisingly, they are still visible everywhere in the city outskirts, unlike throughout most of Southeast Asia where they have nearly vanished already. Expect to pay around Rp 5,000 for a short-hop, or Rp 10,000 for a few blocks, Rp 20,000 for a multi-block haul. Drivers may not want to go a long way, and if it's stinking hot have a heart and pay them some more money. Some of them have sun and rain covers, though these can be a bit low at times. Also, they can vary quite a bit in width: if you are 'big boned' you might need one to yourself.

Also available Becak Motor (cycle which powered by motor cycle engine).

By ride-hailing [ edit ]

Also available : Gocar & Gojek, Grab car & Grab bike.

Commuter city trains are extremely limited, serving some parts of Surabaya and Sidoarjo .

  • Wonokromo Station , ☏ +62 31 8410694 .
  • Gubeng Station , ☏ +62 31 5033115 .
  • Pasar Turi Station , ☏ +62 31 5345014 .
  • Semut Station , ☏ +62 31 3521465 .

Suroboyo Bus is the municipal city bus service. As of August 2018 it only serves Rajawali to Purabaya bus terminal via Pasar Turi train station, Siola and Tunjungan. While they do not accept cash as a form of payment, to help protect the environment passengers may exchange 3 large plastic bottles, 5 small plastic bottles or 10 plastic glasses for a ticket.

This is a large populous city and buses are usually crowded. There are two class of bus: standard buses which are usually very full and patas buses (supposed to be first class, but it is still... a bus.)

By minibus [ edit ]

Bemos (public minibus) in Surabaya are called bemo or lin . They are plentiful in Surabaya and routes are distinguished by their color.

You need to know the routes to specific destination and beware of pickpockets, as it's not safe.

There are many car rental companies. To rent a car with a driver for one day might cost Rp 250,000-500,000, depending on the type of car and the length of the trip. For a full day trip, it is customary to buy lunch for the driver, or give some extra money for the driver to buy cigarettes, a snack, or coffee. Don't forget to pay for parking and toll fees and gas (unless you have already negotiated this into your initial price).

Stay safe [ edit ]

As with any big city, never let your guard down, because big cities such as Surabaya have a reputation among Indonesians for a mid crime rate. That said, Surabaya has few real dangers for visitors apart from the perils of crossing the very busy roads (the secret is to raise an arm while crossing, and to progress with a predictable speed and bearing, allowing the traffic to flow around you). Don't walk on the streets, especially at night other than the CBD area, if you can avoid it since you won't have anything to sightsee. Bring along your face mask if you travel by foot during rush hour since the traffic will be chaos and the air pollution is bad (16:30 to 18:30). Be polite to the people, since Surabayans tend to swear easily which is very common. Do not easily trust people you have just met, even if they look friendly.

Connect [ edit ]

By phone [ edit ].

The international code for Indonesia is +62. Local Surabaya phone numbers will start +62 31 xxx xxxx or +62 31 xxxx xxxx for the CDMA provider or +62 8xx xxxx xxxx for the GSM provider.

There are four main telecommunication providers in Surabaya: Telkomsel , Indosat , Three , Smartfren and XL .

To make an international call from Surabaya, dial the access code 001 (for Indosat), 007 (for Telkom/Telkomsel), or 008 (for Indosat), followed by the country code, area code and party's number. Providers offer cheaper rates for calls using Internet telephony routes (VOIP). The access codes for this cheaper service are 01016 for Indosat provider and 01017 for Telkom and Telkomsel provider.

By net [ edit ]

If you have your own mobile phone, it may run free wifi networks at many malls. Ask at the information desk for access codes. Free hotspots are also available in most restaurants and cafes. Several hotels also provide free hotspots in their lobby. All major hotels provide internet access in one or more ways; simply ask them about this when you make your booking.

Alternatively, if you have a compatible 4G mobile phone and a laptop, tethering to your PC is the quickest way to gain internet access although speeds might not impress. Note that prepaid SIM cards can be purchased very easily and cheap, and that service activation is completed on the user's phone very quickly. Once activated, recharge with credits as necessary. Internet access is usually available at this stage; refer to your phone's user manual for tethering instructions. Operators will usually offer internet packets that offer cheaper access fees-instructions to access these services are available in the booklet that comes with your SIM card (i.e. XL's services are accessible by dialing *123# ). BlackBerry Internet Service is readily available and can be registered similarly on the prepaid SIM.

Internet cafes are available in many parts of the city with a price of Rp 4,000-5,000 per hour. However, most of the internet cafes can be found around universities, and in most shopping malls.

Internet speeds in Surabaya are rarely fast, regardless of your connection. They are usually sufficient to make decent Whatsapp voice calls, although HD video calling may not be possible. Temporarily disabling software updates (Windows Update, security software updates, Adobe Updater, etc.) may help maximise access speeds.

You must drive through the park in your own car or in the sightseeing bus provided within the park, passing an interesting and amusing collection of local and international animals clustered within areas themed according to their original habitat - Americas, Asia, Africa, and Indonesia. There's also a food court, mechanical and animal rides, a petting zoo, and animal shows. The park is usually crowded on weekends and public holidays. However, it is mostly deserted on weekdays.
  • Mount Bromo is a popular 4-hour trip from Surabaya.
  • Tretes and Trawas are 2 hrs away. Pleasant villas among hills. Good food. There are many roasted corn stalls at night.

Hotels, recreation areas, and villas such as picnics and sports clubs are widely available. Bantu (height: around 1,000 m) is a hill resort around 30 mins by car to the west of Malang. Higher again (around 2,000 m), just beyond Batu to the north on the slopes of Mt Arjuna, is the well-known hill resort of Selecta.

Pengunjung hanya membeli tiket masuk sebesar Rp 5.000.

Apa rahasianya?

Salah satu korban penipuan Lovean Tour and Travel menunjukkan bukti laporannya.

"Masih berjalan prosesnya," kata Hendro.
