The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

Gene Sloan

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Virgin Voyages

cruises all inclusive adults only

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

cruises all inclusive adults only

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

cruises all inclusive adults only

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

Not in the Mood to Cruise With Kids? These Adult Sailings Are Totally (or Mostly) Kid-Free

From adults-only cruise lines to itineraries geared specifically to adults, on these cruises you won’t see many or any little ones..

Whether you have kids or grandkids or not, whether you love kids or don’t, sometimes there is just something extremely appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That’s where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed onboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand two years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed onboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grownups.

While there are no other major cruise lines that outright ban the under-18 set, there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don’t cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd— world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare—not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship—and fewer onboard experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)—the greater the chance youngsters won’t be onboard. Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruises.

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company’s many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line’s 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you’ll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience that is geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get onboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

15-day Grand European Tour , Amsterdam to Budapest on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, from $3,999 per person.

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on three 2,770-passenger ships (a fourth is set to debut in December 2023) that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The onboard atmosphere is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle—and not so subtle—sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, an onboard tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the “Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream” shop (for no extra charge)—in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and ’80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

4-night Fire & Sunset Soirée sailing , embarks Miami for Key West and then Virgin’s private Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, from $1,606 for two.

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples age 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The onboard atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a “living room” for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries are focused on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion including small group shore excursions and “AzAmazing” experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

9-night Croatia Intensive Voyage on the 690-passenger Azamara Quest, from $3,516 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is “the world’s most luxurious cruise line”—a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Cartagena, Spain, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids—and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska—not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids’ heads.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group onboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children’s playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you’re unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of “Marco Polo.” Rather, you’re more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

10-night sailing from Monte Carlo to Barcelona on the new 728-passenger Silver Nova, from $11,400 per person.

Windstar guarantees there won’t be young kids onboard—you must be age eight or up to sail. That said, it’s rare to see any kids at all. The upscale line’s 148- to 342-passenger ships deliver an intimate, adult atmosphere whether you are on a four- or five-masted ship with billowing sails or an all-suite motorized yacht. Cabins and suites are mostly designed for two and attract couples looking for romance at sea, in addition to excellent dining, enhanced by the line’s status as the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. Borrow a kayak from your ship’s own marina by day and cap an evening of food and drink with quiet time out on deck, watching the moon reflect on the sea.

Destinations and Itineraries : Each cruise line offers unique destinations and itineraries. Are you looking for tropical paradises, cultural European ports, or adventurous expeditions to remote areas? Your destination preference will significantly influence your choice.

Duration of the Cruise : Cruises range from short getaways to lengthy voyages. Consider how much time you’re willing to spend at sea and choose a cruise that fits within your available time frame.

Onboard Facilities and Activities : Different cruises offer varying facilities and activities. Some focus on relaxation and wellness, while others are geared towards adventure and entertainment. Ensure the cruise you select aligns with your interests and lifestyle.

Cost and Inclusions : Budget is a crucial factor. Consider what is included in the price. Some cruises offer an all-inclusive experience covering meals, drinks, and entertainment, while others may have additional costs for specific amenities.

Type of Accommodation : Accommodation options vary from standard cabins to luxurious suites. Decide what level of comfort and space you require for your journey.

Tips for First-Time Cruisers

For those embarking on their first adults-only cruise, here are some practical tips:

Research Thoroughly : Spend time researching different cruise lines and ships. Read reviews and testimonials from past passengers to get a sense of the experience.

Book Early or Last Minute : Booking well in advance or last minute can result in better deals or upgrades.

Unforgettable Getaways: Discover the Best Adults-Only Cruises

author image

See recent posts by Megan Johnson

Going on a cruise is on the bucket list of many travelers. While most cruises seem adult-oriented, most of them allow children, and although many do have kid zones and clubs, there is no avoiding them on the ship unless you book an adults-only cruise. Luckily, there are several to choose from.

While some cruise lines aren’t necessarily adults, they cater to older crowds, and you’d be hard-pressed to find any younger passengers. Most of these adult cruises are fairly luxurious and not particularly family-friendly. From Europe to the South Pacific, 3-day to 3-months, here are the best adults-only cruises (or nearly adults-only) for your next sailing adventure.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Venus

Viking Ocean Cruises offers luxurious small-ship cruises with elegant Scandinavian-inspired decor, cultural enrichment programs, and inclusive amenities such as shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and fine dining. Travel to destinations in Europe, Africa/The Middle East, North America, the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Australia. Kids aren’t the only thing you won’t find on Viking Ocean Cruises; they also have no casinos, no charge for wine or beer at lunch and dinner, and no entrance fee for the spa.

Every room on a Viking Ocean Cruise has a king-sized bed, private veranda, heated bathroom floors, and other amenities to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Depending on the cabin category, amenities may include comfortable bedding with premium linens, ample storage space, flat-screen TVs with complimentary on-demand movies and programming, mini-refrigerators with complimentary beverages, and luxury toiletries in the bathrooms.

Enjoy one offshore excursion at all ports of call, including visits to UNESCO sites. Onboard, you’ll have access to serene Scandinavian spaces like the library (curated with literature pertinent to your destination), and the Living Room, a perfect escape for tranquility during your cruise vacation. You’ll have a pool, lounge, spa and more to keep you occupied during days at sea.

They focus on providing immersive cultural experiences with expert-led shore excursions, onboard enrichment programs, and upscale amenities. Viking emphasizes comfort, exploration, and enrichment, catering to travelers interested in history, art, and cuisine. Viking aims to provide a refined and intimate cruising experience along some of the world’s most iconic waterways with a fleet of modern river ships.

Higher-end suites include welcome champagne to start your journey off right. Amenities include heated bathroom floors, individual climate control, and underbed suitcase storage.

Onboard, enjoy guest lectures and port talks for a more in-depth look at your destination, live performances, craft and cooking demonstrations, and more to keep you occupied on river days. Wine, beer, and other non-alcoholic drinks are included in your base fare. Offshore, enjoy privileged access to attractions not normally open to the general public.

P&O Cruises – Aurora and Arcadia

Aurora

P&O offers adults-only cruises and family-friendly sailings, with Aurora and Arcadia reserved for adults only. With stylish decor, gourmet dining options, and a focus on hospitality, P&O appeals to couples and solo travelers seeking a refined experience.

Aurora is the smallest ship, at an 1874-passenger capacity, and provides a more intimate experience. Choose from a wide range of itineraries through Spain, the British Isles, and the Mediterranean. Although a smaller ship, you won’t be lacking for entertainment; the Aurora hosts three pools, nineteen restaurants and bars, entertainment including a game show, illusion show, theatre, live music, and a spa.

Budget travelers can choose from inside, and sea-view rooms, and travelers with a bit more to spend and who prefer a bit more comfort in their accommodations can choose from balcony rooms or suites and mini-suites.

Arcadia, with a 2388-passenger capacity, is the bigger of the two, but you still won’t see anyone under eighteen onboard. Choose from itineraries in Europe, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take Arcadia’s 99-day around-the-world cruise. With two pools, fifteen restaurants and bars, a three-tier theatre, an art gallery, a cinema and more – you won’t be without things to see and do while on board.

Like Aurora, Arcadia has a room for whatever your needs are: budget inside rooms for those who know they won’t be spending a lot of time in their room, sea view rooms, balcony rooms, as well as mini-suites and suites for those who need more space while traveling.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages’ cruises are all adults-only (though for the young at heart)- they offer a trendy and inclusive atmosphere with unique features like drag brunches, experimental dining, and wellness offerings. It’s ideal for travelers looking for a playful and unconventional cruise experience. Choose from destinations worldwide, with each ship holding about 2700 passengers. Setting sail in 2021, Virgin Voyages has quickly become the go-to cruise line for anyone looking to cruise the waters without kids.

You won’t find any buffets on Virgin cruises; instead, you’ll find “intimate spaces and diverse options to match your mood” with menus created by Michelin-starred chefs. Stay fit with the outdoor running track or fitness room, relax at the spa, and be entertained on-board with your choice of dance, musical and theatrical performances.

You’ll have your pick from choice of rooms, from the insider rooms, the most affordable sea view rooms, a Sea Terrace Cabin, which have the added feature of a private terrace where you can relax and take in the ocean breeze. And for those looking for the ultimate luxury, you can choose from RockStar Suites: which include various perks such as access to a dedicated RockStar Agent, priority boarding, and exclusive dining experiences, or Mega RockStar Suites which feature private hot tubs, and access to exclusive areas of the ship.

Silversea Cruises

Silver Whisper

Silversea specializes in ultra-luxury small-ship cruises, with spacious suites, personalized service, and immersive itineraries to exotic destinations on all seven continents. While not strictly adult-only, Silversea’s intimate atmosphere appeals to travelers seeking a refined and exclusive experience.

Included in your booking is a suite, butler, one on-shore excursion per port, and all food and beverages. Every suite has an ocean view, and the more luxurious ones have a veranda and ample seating room. No matter what you choose, it will be spacious – Silversea boasts the most space per guest than any other cruiseline.

You’ll find a spa, fitness center, various restaurants, and entertainment onboard.  On Silver Nova, Silver Moon, and Silver Dawn, you’ll find Silversea’s S.A.L.T. program, S.A.L.T stands for Sea And Land Taste, which gives you the chance to delve into a true culinary experience wherever you are: from meeting the most famous chef in a country, exploring an organic farm, or making pastry- you’ll get a hands-on culinary experience.

Holland America Line

Rotterdam

Like Silversea, Holland America allows guests under eighteen, but they are geared towards adults, and any cruise over 25 days does not offer a kids club. Holland America appeals to travelers seeking a traditional yet sophisticated cruise experience. Destinations for cruises over 25 days include around-the-world cruises, the Arctic Circle, the Pacific, and Japan.

Holland America’s ships offer budget inside rooms without windows for guests who merely want a place to lay their head at night, and they offer sea view suites in various sizes to suit your needs. All rooms include 24-hour in-room dining, daily housekeeping, storage, and complimentary shoe-shining service.

Onboard, you’ll find a spa and salon, fitness center, pools, a casino, restaurants, and a wide variety of entertainment.

Minimum Age: None

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Seven Seas Splendor®

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is known for its all-inclusive luxury, offering spacious suites, gourmet dining, and complimentary shore excursions. Another line that is not exclusively adults-only, Regent’s upscale atmosphere attracts discerning travelers seeking a refined and pampering experience.

Regent’s ships are smaller than the major cruise lines – ranging from 490 passengers to 750. One thing they all have in common? Luxury. Their Explorer line features balconies with every suite, with the highlight being their Regent Suite, which features a balcony with a mini pool, private in-suite spa with sauna, steam room, jetted tub, walk-in closets, two bedrooms, living room, and free laundry. Prices start around $10,000 a night for the Regent suite, so save your pennies. Their small cruise ships offer an intimate luxury experience, and two of the ships in this class (the Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner are all-balcony suites.

On board, you’ll stay busy with pools, a library, a casino, a spa, a salon, a fitness center, and evening entertainment. Enjoy meals at restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world, poolside service, and in-room service.

Saga Cruises

Spirit of Discovery

The minimum age for someone to book a Saga Cruise is fifty, although companions can be forty or older. Saga prides itself on offering a premium and all-inclusive experience. They offer a variety of itineraries to destinations around the world, including Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and beyond.

Balconies are standard with whatever type of cabin you choose and include ensuite bathrooms, turndown service, fresh fruit, and more. Many cabins include full in-cabin afternoon tea service, have a personalized mini bar, and some include butler service.

Saga Cruises often includes enrichment programs and activities, including lectures, workshops, and cultural experiences onboard and during shore excursions.  Passengers can enjoy amenities like spas, fitness centers, live music performances, and theaters, ensuring a well-rounded and enjoyable cruise experience.

Minimum Age: 50 (to book), 40 (companion)

Grand Circle

M/S Bizet

Grand Circle Cruises also specializes in cruises for passengers over fifty, although they allow kids over thirteen to join, and they claim that there are long bus sightseeing tours that younger travelers may not enjoy. They operate a fleet of small ships, offering intimate and immersive experiences that larger vessels cannot provide. Their itineraries span regions worldwide, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, often focusing on off-the-beaten-path destinations and cultural immersion.

Grand Circle has a high crew-to-passenger ratio to ensure individual attention and a comfortable experience. The ships in their fleet carry only 86-162 passengers, are privately owned, and every cabin has an outside window. Rooms are basic yet comfortable and provide all you need for your voyage. Grand Circle is the perfect cruise line for solo travelers – they have a roommate matching program, where you will be matched up with another solo traveler to room with, and, don’t worry, if they can’t find the perfect roommate for you, they will cover your single supplement fee.

While you may not find the extravagant entertainment there is on bigger cruises, they encourage socializing with other guests and occasionally have local musicians on board to entertain in the evenings. You’ll have the privilege of a local program director who will accompany you off shore and bring you to the top attractions of your destination.

Best Adult Only Cruises

  • Honeymooners

adult woman holding champagne on a cruise ship balcony.

In the last few decades, the cruise industry has ballooned into a multi-billion-dollar industry with nearly 30 million people going on cruises every year. It’s also gotten much more diverse than it used to be. You can find a cruise in pretty much every category nowadays, including families with kids , adventurers, foodies and luxury travelers . You can choose everything from room size and onboard facilities, to itineraries and even the general atmosphere of the cruise ship. And another new trend has emerged: adult only cruises .

100% Adult Only Cruise Lines

People who are looking for a relaxing and quiet cruise trip can now opt for adult only cruises. No more yelling children in the pool, or crying toddlers in the restaurants. This relatively new concept has emerged due to the popularity of adult only areas aboard regular cruise ships. It was only a matter of time before this was extended to entire ships.

While most cruise lines still focus on offering family-friendly cruises , there are some that have pioneered adult-only cruises. Their ships are either entirely kid-free or at least their (lack of) kid-friendly facilities keep away traveling families.

Some cruise lines simply have adult-only ships; others still accept children, but definitely have fewer on board.

The key to finding adult-only cruises is looking for those sailings that lack family appeal. Ships without children facilities and cruises with a strong focus on culture, food and history will naturally have far fewer kids onboard.

Below, you’ll find some of the best adult-only cruises available today.

A brand-new addition to, and some would say disruptor of, the cruise industry, Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages hit the seas in 2020 and is a completely adult-only cruise line . To sail on any of its ships, passengers have to be 18 years or older.

Virgin Voyages offers cruises that are hip, cool and maybe even sexy. Branson himself has said that the goal is to draw in people who’d never have considered going on a cruise before. Cutting-edge amenities range from a test kitchen to the world’s largest daybed at sea to a fancy nightclub.

The Virgin Voyages fleet consists of four ships , each catering to adults 18 years and older. The maiden ship, the Scarlet Lady is a high-end, ultra-modern cruise ship that can accommodate up to 2,770 passengers and has a strong focus on the body and mind. Adults can get pampered at a world-class spa, complete with salt room, hydrotherapy pool, quartz beds, mudroom and the like. Outside, an outdoor sundeck and yoga area will be flanked by a running track. Additionally, the indoor gym, boxing ring and group classes will offer even more physical enjoyment.

Let’s not forget, though, that Virgin Voyages will also feature tons of culinary and entertainment venues. This all to make Virgin Voyages one of the best-ever adult-only cruise lines.

With a strict 18-years-or-older policy, all Viking Ocean Cruises have been adult-only cruises since the very beginning. Ever since they revolutionized the river cruise industry, with stylish ships appealing to an older demographic, they’ve been one of the leading cruise lines for grownups. With itineraries focused on immersion in local culture, cuisine and onshore activities, it’s a fantastic choice for a more sophisticated (and longer) cruise.

Instead of offering all kinds of non-stop entertainment and 24-hour buffet restaurants, Viking Ocean Cruises gives its passengers the chance to actually relax in between ports. They strive to offer, as they themselves put it, “ The Thinking Person’s Cruise “. Every detail you see on board a Viking ship was thoughtfully designed to allow you to completely immerse yourself in the destinations you’re visiting, as well as their culture, art, history and cuisine.

There are tastings of local wines guided by a sommelier, cooking classes and guest lectures. Curated libraries provide the opportunity to read up on everything and anything you’d like. It’s not only about nourishing your intellect, creativity and spirit, though. You can also pamper your body at the on-board fitness center and spa, a sanctuary of typical Nordic wellness featuring a sauna, various pools and baths, and even a snow grotto.

The iconic Viking ships sail all over the world , including the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, the Caribbean and East Asia, and even round-the-world cruises .

While originally a millennial-only cruise line, U by Uniworld changed its age restrictions in 2018 and now offers river cruises in Europe to adults of all ages. They still focus heavily on younger adults in their branding and marketing, though, which sets them apart from other river cruise lines.

Their itineraries are packed with immersive activities, social events and cultural programs, catering perfectly to the millennial lifestyle where experiences are more important than materialism. On their river cruises on the rivers of the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, you can expect plenty of fun things to do, from countryside bike rides to hands-on cocktail workshops, cultural walking tours and kayaking excursions.

U by Uniworld has numerous river ships, all of which offer unique experiences and elegant spaces. It’s worth highlighting two of them, though. Simply called The A and The B, these ships can accommodate 120 passengers. Made to cruise Europe’s most iconic rivers, they’re not just a floating boutique hotel, but also a water taxi, yoga studio, nightclub, restaurant and bar.

Many of the available on-board activities are also a bit “out of the box” and you won’t find them on any other cruise line. They include things like tent camping on the ship’s rooftop, silent disco parties, and top-deck wine and paint classes in some of Europe’s most picturesque locations.

Mostly Adult Only Cruises With Adult Amenities

In addition to the top adult-only cruise lines above, there are several others that also cater mainly to adults. Although they’re technically not 100% adults only, they do make for a great choice if you’re looking for a more sophisticated and grown-up atmosphere. When you book a cruise with the following cruise lines, you won’t find many kids on board (though there might be the occasional family).

Carnival Cruises Serenity Adult-Only Retreat

The perfect example of what sparked the new adult-only cruise trend is Carnival’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat . While Carnival is also a family-friendly cruise line, it’s this kind of 21+ retreats that have proven immensely popular among grown-up passengers. You’ll still be at the same ship as the kids, but while they’re participating in a themed event or other kids’ activity, you’ll be swaying in a hammock, sitting at the bar or simply lazing in a sunbed.

Additionally, Carnival Cruises is a great choice for honeymoon cruises , just because of their various adult-only areas. The Alchemy Bar, Piano Bar and Tequila Bar, for example, are accessible only to people 21 years and older, great places to kick back with an adult beverage. For more evening action, you can head to the Nightclub, where DJs spin the latest hits and theme parties are no uncommon.

Alternatively, the Cloud 9 Spa Thermal Suite offers ultimate relaxation with its steam baths, dry heat rooms and other climate-controlled areas.

Although Silversea does accept children older than 6 months, there are little or no kids’ programs on board their ships. Silversea cruises don’t come with childcare services, children’s entertainment or supervision. This in itself greatly limits the number of kids on board their ships.

Instead, Silversea focuses on giving guests a luxurious cruise experience. This is one of the top luxury cruise lines in the world, offering only all-inclusive cruises to amazing destinations. There are butlers, 24-hour gourmet dining options, first-class wine selections and award-winning shows and performances. While not strictly adults-only in theory, in practice, Silversea cruises are essentially high-end cruises for adults.

Another fantastic luxury cruise line, Seabourn also offers all-inclusive cruises focused on adults. On Seabourn ships, there are no children’s programs at all and it’s quite unusual to see families with kids on these cruises. Although parents could take their kids on a Seabourn cruise, they’ll have to entertain and supervise them 24/7 themselves.

This is a great cruise line for travelers looking for an experience-rich cruise on a small, intimate ship. Seabourn offers excellent cuisine, world-class service and relaxed luxury, all in some of the world’s most extraordinary cruise destinations.

Unable to accommodate children younger than 8, while passengers under 21 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 25 years old, Windstar Cruises also essentially offers adult-only cruises in practice.

The intimate atmosphere and elegant designs of their small cruise ships are adult-oriented and not really suitable for children, especially younger ones. There are no childcare, entertainment or other kid-friendly services on board. Additionally, Windstar also doesn’t offer a child rate—each minor occupying a stateroom as a third person will be charged the applicable “third person rate.”

Instead of focusing on traveling families, Oceania Cruises caters almost exclusively to adult travelers. Infants and children are allowed, however, but there are restrictions and very few services. The minimum age on Oceania Cruises is 1 year, while passengers younger than 18 must be accompanied by and stay in the same stateroom as an adult.

Onboard Oceania’s ships, you’ll find a wide array of adult-focused facilities and services, from a running track and artist loft to a culinary center, library and lecture rooms. Additionally, Oceania is one of the more affordable small-ship cruise lines that cater to adults.

On their website , Azamara “discourages families from sailing with children under 18 years of age, as the on board ambience and experience caters to adults and there are no activities for children or baby-sitting services available.” It doesn’t get more direct and clearer than that, which basically makes Azamara an adults-only cruise line.

Azamara is a fantastic cruise line for grownups who’d like to really immerse themselves in their destination(s), indulge in local cuisine, spend more time in ports and have more overnight stays, and enjoy high-end boutique hotel-like services.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

10 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Playa del Carmen

Plan your getaway with our list of editor-loved and T+L award-winning properties.

cruises all inclusive adults only

Taylor McIntyre / Travel + Leisure

Playa del Carmen is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in Mexico for a beach vacation. While the city was once a boho backpacker town with sandy streets and a handful of palapa-topped restaurants, today it is a veritable beachfront hotspot with hundreds of restaurants, sizzling entertainment, colorful nightlife, and many resorts. Travelers are drawn to its fluffy, white sand, the gentle rolls of turquoise-colored waves, and the opportunity to post up poolside with a good book and a strong margarita.

The Mexican Caribbean coastline is renowned for its all-inclusive resorts, each promising to offer a little slice of heaven, complete with beachfront, diverse dining, and tranquil spas. It can be overwhelming to narrow the search and decipher which Playa del Carmen all-inclusive resort is the one to book. Whether you're looking to explore the streets of Playa del Carmen or disappear into a wellness escape, our picks for the best all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen can help you make the choice. I have spent the past 15 years covering Mexico, and in that time I have visited dozens of properties in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area. This list combines Travel + Leisure award winners and editor-loved properties, recognizing these hotels for top-notch amenities, activities, and beautiful rooms and suites.

El Dorado Maroma

Courtesy of Karisma Hotels & Resorts

Also available to book at Expedia.com

The hotel is perched on one of Mexico’s most beautiful white-sand beaches.

The food is not as impressive as at other newer all-inclusive resorts.

El Dorado Maroma is one of Playa del Carmen's all-inclusive jewels, and its location is on a sun-bleached stretch of sand that is the envy of many other beaches in the region. This adults-only resort, a World’s Best Award winner in 2023, is known for its quiet, low-key atmosphere. But just because it's relaxed on vibes doesn't mean it lacks things to do. On the contrary, El Dorado Maroma is packed with amenities, including 11 restaurants and bars, multiple pools, a spa, and a fitness center. I must admit that the food across the resort is not as impressive as at other all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, but I was very impressed with the cuisine at the beachfront restaurant, Lima Limon. The small resort has many room categories, but the Mi Hotelito Beachfront Suites are the best. These rooms are just a few steps from the swimming pool and the beach and have a balcony or terrace. El Dorado Maroma is also home to some of the only over-water bungalows in Mexico. Called the Palafitos, these luxe suites operate like a hotel within the hotel, featuring private infinity pools, glass bottom floors, ladders directly into the ocean, and a private restaurant for Palafitos guests only.

This all-suite hotel features butler service, spa-style tubs, and rainfall showers.

This resort emphasizes tranquility and less on activities and nightlife.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is one of the original all-inclusive luxury resorts to open in this part of the country. The reason it's stuck around for so long is because of its reputation for being one of the most indulgent resorts in Mexico. The all-suite hotel, a 2021 World's Best Awards winner, boasts a generous stretch of beachfront and mangroves and cenotes on the property. Rooms here are some of the largest in the region, with entry-level suites starting at 1,100 square feet with private plunge pools. Guests needn't lift a finger with the assistance of private butler service, though the more adventurous guests can take advantage of activities like kayaking and scuba diving. Dining options give foodies something different to look forward to each night, whether it's elegant French fare with a vintage vibe, casual beachfront dining, romantic Mexican cuisine with live music, or a fusion of flavors from across Asia. Wellness gurus will fawn over the SE Spa by Grand Velas, a veritable playground for holistic healing, including hydrotherapy, massages, and ancient rituals.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico

Courtesy of Xcaret

A dizzying array of dining and activity options await families, where most everything is included in the room rate.

With almost 1,000 rooms, this is one of the largest resorts in the area.

When I first heard that Hotel Xcaret Mexico had 900 rooms (in addition to the 900 rooms at its newer adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte next door), I was overwhelmed, to say the least. But all feelings of hesitancy washed away. Yes, Hotel Xcaret Mexico is one of the largest in the region, but you'd hardly know it because of how the hotel is laid out and just how many places there are to play at this palatial all-inclusive paradise. A winner of the World's Best Awards in 2021 and 2023, Hotel Xcaret Mexico's rooms are spread across five distinct Casas, each named for an element. For guests who want an adults-only experience within Hotel Xcaret, book Casa Fuego, the only casa reserved exclusively for adults and has a private reception, gym, and an Italian-Mexican restaurant for only Casa Fuego guests. Diners are spoiled for choice regarding culinary options, as the resort has 12 restaurants, including one helmed by Carlos Gaytan, Mexico's first chef to earn a Michelin star. Families love this resort for its beautiful pools and the unlimited, all-inclusive access to any of Grupo Caret's theme parks — transportation included. I also want to note that Hotel Xcaret Arte is equally impressive, and guests who want an excellent adults-only experience can book a stay at the neighboring mirror-image resort.

Mahekal Beach Resort

This beachfront resort is within walking distance of Playa del Carmen’s legendary Fifth Avenue.

Guests can book all-inclusive, half-board, or room-only stays.

Mahekal Beach Resort has been one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen for years. I love the luxe, castaway-style vibe from its palapa-topped bungalows, secluded pools that feel like secret grottoes, and prime beachfront access to one of Playa del Carmen's fluffiest white-sand beaches. The resort is also within walking distance of Fifth Avenue, so visitors have the best of both worlds when choosing a beachfront or city hotel. Perhaps all of these reasons are why the resort has been a World's Best Award winner in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The boho-chic beachfront resort has under 200 rooms, and guests can choose from a garden or ocean view. The grounds boast four swimming pools, three bars, three restaurants, and a spa with a gym. Public spaces feature giant poufs on the sand, strings of twinkle lights, and shabby chic ocean-style decor. Fuego Restaurante y Cantina is my favorite restaurant option because of its succulent seafood, pizzas, and grilled specialties.

Valentin Imperial Maya

A massive main pool features two swim-up bars, while a lazy river connects swim-up rooms.

Resort grounds are extensive, so it can take time to get around.

This adults-only resort often flies below the radar because it is so low-key. But that's precisely what its loyal band of repeat guests love about it. The 540-room Valentin Imperial Maya, a Word's Best winner in 2022 and 2023, draws visitors thanks to its meandering stretch of stark white sand, lazy river-style pool, and spacious, well-appointed suites. Entry-level suites are the Deluxe Juniors, which are 516 square feet and feature jetted bathtubs, balconies, or ground-floor terraces. Guests can choose from the 11 bars and seven a la carte restaurants. Note that a dress code is required at every restaurant. For limited mobility guests, it is worth mentioning that the resort grounds are expansive, and it can take 10 minutes to get from one end of the resort to the other.

Hilton Playa del Carmen, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort

Courtesy of Hilton

This resort has one of the most beautiful pool areas in Playa del Carmen.

The beach is relatively small compared to others on this list.

First, the location at Hilton Playa del Carmen cannot be beaten. When visiting Playa del Carmen, part of the magic is being within the city itself. However, for travelers who don't want to sacrifice a proper beach holiday, the Hilton offers the best of both worlds — if you can pull yourself away from the fabulous food and drinks included. The modern beachfront resort centers its action around its spacious pool deck. By day, the vibe is lively (without being too party-heavy), with entertainment and music. For those who want more tranquility, a quieter pool is secluded in a different section of the property. Rooms at the resort are spacious and well-lit, with double-jetted tubs in the room. Dining options include seven lounges and bars, a la carte restaurants, buffets, and 24-hour in-room dining. All restaurants require reservations, so try to make those as early as possible. The spa boasts a hydrotherapy circuit that includes a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and hydro tubs. Activities abound, from a gym and rooftop tennis court to themed evening entertainment.

La Casa de La Playa

Taylor McIntyre / Travel + Leisure

This intimate luxury resort takes service, food, and design to the next level.

It is one of the most expensive resorts to book in Playa del Carmen.

If La Casa de La Playa received a report card, it would read "Exceeds Expectations" across the board. Often described by guests as "the best hotel in Riviera Maya," this all-inclusive, intimate resort has truly thought of everything. It starts with a private transfer from the Cancun airport — included in the room rate — before checking into one of the 63 luxurious suites. Each with its own personality, the rooms are divided among three buildings: Natural, Fiesta, and Wellness. But each room is supremely luxurious, and all include private en-suite pools, premium dining, exclusive activities in the Grupo Xcaret Parks, and sailing excursions aboard Xcaret Xailing. Oh yes, Casa de La Playa is part of the Xcaret family, like Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcaret Arte. Among the exclusive touches to the hotel include a 40-meter infinity pool that extends over the sea and a restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Martha Ortiz. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, are the tailor-made experiences, from private dinners in a cenote to customized massages in the Muluk Spa.

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

This romantic resort has a spectacular stretch of white-sand beach with many restaurant and activity options.

Ground-floor rooms lack privacy.

Relaxed and romantic, with a totally secluded atmosphere thanks to its 500 acres of beautiful beachfront. Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun is a paradise for couples. Guests check into one of the 412 luxury suites. Suites feature two-person whirlpool tubs and private balconies, while ground-floor rooms are swim-up suites. Club-level rooms have additional amenities like private lounges and beach club access, and a daily continental breakfast served in the lounge or a la carte breakfast at the Beach Club. Couples can post up at the two oceanfront pools or steal away to the spa for a couples massage. One of the most romantic restaurants is Bordeaux, which has a wine theme and a wine cellar with more than 200 labels. Guests can also choose from Italian, Mexican, pan-Asian, seafood, and many other options.

UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

Courtesy of UNICO 20°87°

This adults-only resort has fantastic food, a great pool scene, and a beautiful, quiet beach.

Spa treatments used to be included but are no longer part of the all-inclusive package.

Playa del Carmen has a long list of all-inclusive resorts, but I will never get tired of UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya. This adults-only, all-inclusive resort has a little bit of everything and can chameleon itself to fit any vibe. From live DJ sessions at the main pool for a party feel to deep soaking tubs on private balconies for more intimate and quiet moments, UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya is about having guests choose their own adventure. The spacious suites are among my favorites in the area, notably the Alto Ocean View Kings on the hotel's highest floor. Every room has a cozy, sweatshirt-style bathrobe you may never want to part with. Restaurants here are fabulous — Cueva Siete for Mexican cuisine and Mura House for Japanese are two of the most popular. Reservations are strongly suggested. The spa is gorgeous and features a hydrotherapy facility. Once upon a time, massages were included as part of the all-inclusive package, which was a fantastic incentive, but sadly, that perk is no longer available.

Palmaïa - The House of AïA

Courtesy of Palmaïa The House of AïA

A jungle-meets-beach aesthetic sets the scene for a phenomenal holistic wellness program.

While the focus is on tranquility and wellness, it is not an adults-only resort.

Cushioned between a white sand beach and a thick, green jungle, Palmaïa exudes a completely Mexican Caribbean vibe. The boho-chic, haute hippie design sets the scene for a crowd looking for utter relaxation with a healthy dash of wellness and reconnection. The foundation for the wellness program at Palmaïa stems from ancient holistic healing rituals, where the central Architects of Life Programme guides guests on a daily journey, whether it is sunrise breath work, cacao ceremonies, or purification rituals. The Atlantis spa is where travelers can go deeper, with innovative massages, body treatments, and even temazcal sessions. Restaurants feature mostly plant-based menus, though those who swing a little more carnivore can always add protein. While the resort is family-friendly, rooms are divided among adults-only and family sections, so for travelers who don't want the sounds of children as part of their daily rituals, there's a solution to that. Adults do have their own pool section, as well.

Know Before You Go

Plan around sargassum season..

While Playa del Carmen and the surrounding Riviera Maya region have a (well-deserved) reputation for sparkling white sand beaches, these beaches do fall prey to seasonal sargassum. This sargassum, or the stinky seaweed that piles up on shore, can last from April to October. If you're traveling to Playa del Carmen during that time, you may want to consider all-inclusive resorts that have fabulous pools and great amenities.

Bring pesos for tipping.

Yes, you are at an all-inclusive resort, where gratuities are (usually) included. But on the chance you want to slip your favorite waiter or concierge a little something extra, it's best to have pesos on hand. You may see a lot of other tourists tipping in U.S. dollars, but it's a lot easier for your hosts if you tip them in their local currency.

Expect traffic.

The Cancun area is expanding to keep up with the high demand of travelers. In fact, Tulum recently opened its own airport to help combat the massive influx of travelers. Still, with lots of travelers comes many infrastructure projects and, potentially, a lot of traffic. Be patient and plan for extra time, whether that's getting to your hotel or returning back to the airport.

How We Chose These Hotels

Choosing the very best all-inclusive resorts in and around Playa del Carmen is a daunting task simply because there are so many great ones to choose from. Several of the hotels on this list made the cut because they've earned a coveted spot in our annual World's Best awards, in which hundreds of thousands of T+L readers vote on their favorite hotels around the globe. You can see the 2023 winners here .

In addition to those award-winning properties, author Meagan Drillinger contributed her expertise. She has spent the past 15 years covering Mexico and in that time has visited dozens of properties in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area. She also consulted her colleagues and pored over hundreds of reviews. To make her selection, she focused on her personal experiences, as well as the experiences of others who have described everything from check-in to check-out, and every meal, activity, and spa treatment in between. Her experience as a travel writer has taken her to hundreds of hotels all around the world.

This Adults-only, All-inclusive Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, Has an Oceanfront Infinity Pool With a Swim-up Bar, En Suite Jacuzzis, and 24-hour Nachos

We were among the first to stay at the brand-new Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos.

When it comes to idyllic Mexico vacation spots, Los Cabos needs no introduction. The destination welcomes more than 3 million travelers a year and has no shortage of resorts — and a slew of them are all-inclusive. In February 2024, a new all-inclusive resort, only for adults, opened its doors: Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos .

If the name sounds familiar, it's because the owners also have Grand Velas Los Cabos two doors down from the new property. While the 491-room Grand Velas is family-friendly with amenities like a lounge for teens and a 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. daycare for kids, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is strictly for adults 18 years and older.

Juan Vela Ruiz, vice president of Velas Resorts, told Travel + Leisure that the decision to create an adults-only property is about giving travelers more choices. "With Velas Resorts, we try to give a very wide range of options to our guests," Ruiz said. That's why the hospitality company opted to open an adults-only hotel to complement the thriving family-friendly enclave next door.

Ruiz also noted that Grand Velas was one of the original players in the Los Cabos all-inclusive luxury market. "When we first came out with the all-inclusive luxury product, there was no other player [like us in the area]," he said.

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos

  • All-inclusive resorts often get a bad rep for food quality but this resort really sets the bar high.
  • The oceanfront infinity pool with a swim-up bar is the shining star of the property.
  • Every guest gets a private concierge who is a text message away, and it makes it so easy to ask questions and put in requests.

When I stepped onto the property, I immediately noticed the clean, simple, and modern aesthetic — perfect for an only-for-adults hot spot. Tones of beige dominated with only one bright pop of color: pink bougainvillea flowers. (The flowers are a trademark of Velas properties, which are scattered throughout Mexico.)

Here, my review of the new, all-inclusive Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos.

Grand Velas Boutique has 79 guest rooms and each is more than 900 square feet with a living area, walk-in shower, and either two queen-size beds or a king-size bed. Some rooms offer ocean views and other have garden views, but all rooms have a private terrace with either a Jacuzzi or a plunge pool.

My room had a box of assorted fruits and a tray with a bottle of mezcal. It was also stocked with chips, candy, nuts, and granola. The beverage options included soda, Gatorade, Tecate beer, water, peach juice, and chardonnay. Every night, a delicious dessert amenity appeared with the turndown service.

The bathroom amenities included Molton Brown soap, body wash, and hair products; Dyson hair dryers and straighteners; and dental kits and shaving kits. Each room also came with a straw basket for guests to sport around the resort with their towels and/or belongings.

But the standout part of my suite was definitely the stunning sea views that allowed me to watch the sunrise every morning and also peep whales on the horizon. The view was so good that I spent more time on the balcony than in my room.

Food and Drink

The quality of food at an all-inclusive can make or break the experience. At Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, the food and beverage options 100 percent make the stay.

The property has five food-and-beverage establishments: Loto, 51 Bar, Del Mar, Roca Bar, and the Pool Bar. All are part of the all-inclusive package and each offers guests something different. "If you go to any of the all-inclusive adults-only boutique hotels in town, they will have one or two restaurants," Ruiz said. "Ours have more, and you will not have to repeat restaurants."

My first stop was 51 Bar, which offers grab-and-go fare, whether for a snack or a lighter breakfast. I was ushered here for my check-in process and swiftly handed a refreshing mocktail to enjoy on one of the plush couches. I found myself visiting for my mid-day caffeine fix and also loitering around the outdoor fireplace for a mocktail at night. (The team of bartenders can whip up mocktails and cocktails throughout the day, and a massive TV in the back serves as a spot for guests to catch up on sports.)

My first sit-down meal was at Loto, a dinner-only spot offering Japanese-Mexican fusion cuisine that specializes in slow-cooking over an open fire. Here, I feasted on tuna tartar cones, a shrimp salad dressed in eel sauce, and an assortment of yaki tori : chicken in shoyu dressing, octopus in gochujang and yuzu, and scallops in miso butter.

For breakfast, guests have the option to indulge in room service on plant-based burritos, vegetarian enchiladas, an assortment of egg dishes, creme brûlée french toast, to name a few options. But there's also daily breakfast (both buffet and à la carte) at Del Mar, which features a menu with traditional Mexican and continental fare.

My first breakfast was huevos rancheros, with a chicken quesadilla and chia-seed pudding on the side. The next day I enjoyed chilaquiles and enchiladas with a side of seasonal fruit. And, as a self-proclaimed beverage queen, I indulged in four drinks every morning: freshly squeezed orange juice, a banana smoothie, water, and a spiced cafe de olla.

During the day, the swim-up Pool Bar offers cocktails, and you can order not-so-small bites, like ceviche, al pastor tacos, fish tempura, and fried shrimp, to the daybeds around the infinity pool.

But there's also Roca Bar — the name is a tribute to the rock formations Los Cabos is famous for — which is a casual spot for drinks and small bites right next to the pool. You can sit inside and enjoy views of the Sea of Cortez while feasting on dishes like tuna tostadas, ceviche, fish tacos, and more regional fare. (In the evening, Roca Bar's terrace transforms into a spot to enjoy the starry skies.)

And, of course, the aforementioned in-room dining is available around the clock — including nachos you can feast on at any hour.

If the on-site dining options weren't enough, guests of Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos can eat at the five restaurants at Grand Velas Los Cabos next door: Cocina de Autor, Velas 10, Frida, Piaf (French), and Lucca (Italian). All of these dining venues are available to Grand Velas Boutique guests at no extra charge.

"Everything we have in terms of gastronomy at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is different from what you have in Grand Velas Los Cabos, but they also complement each other," Ruiz said.

Experiences, Amenities, and Spa

The shining star of the property is its oceanfront infinity pool. And for those who want a little more ocean action, there are even umbrellas and daybeds on the beach, where I hung out keeping my eyes peeled for signs of whales.

The all-inclusive includes an array of tasting experiences. In the Agave tasting room, there is a curated selection of tequila and mezcal, and plenty of tequila tastings on offer. (I had a wine and cheese pairing here that spotlighted local vinos under the helm of the property's sommelier, which included a sheep's cheese from Chiapas paired with a 2022 bottle of Xolo from Valle de Guadalupe.)

There's also an outpost of SE Spa, featuring four ocean-view treatment rooms — two are dedicated to couples treatments. There are an array of signature treatments like “Sounds of the Ocean,” which is a massage coupled with sound-bowl therapy. There's also the “Ice and Fire Therapy" treatment, which uses hot obsidian stones and cold marble stones to stimulate blood circulation. (Treatments will use skin care products from EviDenS de Beauté, Natura Bisse, and Babor.)

No matter what you pick, all treatments include a Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos signature wellness ceremony, which brings guests through a sauna, steam room, ice room, and jacuzzi, and ends with a dip in the magnesium pool.

Between the dining options and experiences on-site, there's no need to leave the property. But should you want to, every guest gets a personal concierge, who can coordinate add-on excursions like whale watching, a sunset tour of the iconic arc (El Arco De Cabo), and a visit to Land's End, which is where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

The Location

Travelers can fly to and from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), which is a half-hour drive from Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos. The hotel sits along the Tourist Corridor of Los Cabos, which is also known as "El Corredor" by locals, and is a 20-minute drive from the resort city of Cabo San Lucas and a 15-minute drive from San José Del Cabo. The boutique property is next to two other Velas properties: Mar del Cabo and Grand Velas Los Cabos .

Accessibility and Sustainability

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos has elevators and wheelchair ramps, and there are two accessible suites. The pool has access rails. And for guests who want to visit a neighboring property, there is a golf cart service that shuttles you door to door between each resort.

The hotel encourages its guests to reuse sheets and towels instead of requesting a daily replacement. To curb food waste, the kitchen prepares daily based on occupancy and has a system in place to find ways to repurpose fresh ingredients. For instance, vegetables are turned into slow-cooked dishes and broth, and fruits are proactively used in smoothies and to garnish salads.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is part of the I Prefer Hotel Rewards program, which lets travelers book with points earned previously. The hotel also has seasonal pre-sales (so, look for summer pre-sales in the spring, and fall pre-sales in the summer) that offer discounts on airport transportation and spa credits. Nightly room rates at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos start at $600 per person for double occupancy. The rates include all food and beverage with 24-hour room service, taxes, and gratuity. The Top Alaska Cruise Lines

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

To assist in your decision-making process, U.S. News listed the top cruise lines to consider across five categories, including the best options for families , luxury-seekers and adventurers. U.S. News consulted data provided by Cruiseline.com and the results of our 2024 Best Cruise Lines rankings to help develop this list of the top cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Best Overall: Holland America Line and Princess Cruises

Holland america line.

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Celebrity Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Celebrity Summit , Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Solstice Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $397 per person for seven-night voyage on Celebrity Summit, Seward to Vancouver on May 17, 2024

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Best Luxury: Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises

Regent seven seas cruises.

Alaska cruise ships: Seven Seas Explorer Departure cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $4,699 per person (all-inclusive) for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on May 1, 2024

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Pool bar on the Silver Nova.

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.
