On the Columbus Distillery Trail with High Bank Distillery

The Columbus Distillery Trail is a free, digital trail that sends you exploring the city’s seven craft distilleries. We’re helping you get to know each stop a little better. High Bank Distillery is an award-winning distillery and restaurant, now with two locations – in Grandview and Gahanna. The team there has won multiple honors for their spirits, including back-to-back Best Blended Whiskey wins for their Whiskey War Barrel Proof at the San Francisco Spirits Competition.

To get a closer look at the Grandview location, we chatted briefly with General Manager Rob Gelley!

Rob Gelley, General Manager at High Bank Distillery in Grandview

General Manager, Rob Gelley.

What do you do at High Bank Distillery?

I am General Manager at our Grandview location, overseeing operations regarding the restaurant side of our business.

High Bank Distillery Chips and Queso

How do you describe High Bank Distillery to newcomers?

High Bank is a fast-paced, high-energy restaurant with an industrial atmosphere. We have an upscale take on gastropub food and a fun creative cocktail program that has won several local awards for best cocktails in the city.

Whiskey War, High Bank Distillery taster and bottle

The award-winning small batch Whiskey War.

Do you have a favorite spirit at your distillery?

My go-to will always be Whiskey War, but my all-time favorite is our Pedro Ximinez Sherry Cask-aged Whiskey War.

Antiques on High

Antiques on High in Columbus' Brewery District.

Where else do you Live for the Scene in Columbus?

I am a huge fan of The Sycamore in German Village for an upscale meal, Olde Towne Tavern in OTE for a great neighborhood vibe, Antiques on High for cocktails, and Somewhere in Particular for beer. I love vintage décor and furniture and vinyl records and often stop by Used Kids Records , Elizabeth Records, Boomerang Room, and Eclectiques.

Columbus, Ohio, Launches Distillery Tour

Craft Spirits Magazine

Experience Columbus has announced the launch of its new Columbus Distillery Trail , a carefully curated experience co-sponsored by Destination Grandview that welcomes locals and visitors alike to the city’s world-class spirits maker experiences. Columbus’ skilled artisans win international accolades and have led the national craft distilling movement for more than 10 years. In fact, Columbus distilleries are defining one of the most exciting spirits and cocktail scenes in the country, placing the city on the map as a must-visit destination for booze buffs.

Each stop on the trail offers tours and tastings, many with full bar service, while continuing to take great care to ensure guest and staff safety via social distancing, masking and sanitary protocols. This new trail joins Columbus’ existing curated guides to experiencing the best the city has to offer, including the  Short North Art  Trail (curated by the Short North Alliance) and  Columbus Coffee  Trail. Anyone 21 or over can download the Distillery Trail’s digital passport to get started  here . After making  any  purchase at four of the stops, visitors earn a custom Simple Times mixer (featuring a delicious Blackberry Lemonade flavor). After visiting all seven, they earn a “The Proof is in the Proof” Columbus Distillery Trail t-shirt. The Distillery Trail passport covers the following stops:

  • Upstart  Echo Spirits Distilling Co . launched in 2020 against all odds in Grandview, crafting high-end spirits made to be accessible. The distillery aims to echo a time when we got to know the folks making the things we buy, and a laid-back bar offers great cocktails and food deliveries from nearby restaurants.
  • One of the country’s fastest growing distillers,  Middle West Spirits  was named U.S. Distillery of the Year in the Berlin International Spirits Competition and nearly every one of its 15 spirits, including gin, whiskies, bourbons, vodkas and bourbon cream, have brought home double gold, gold and silver awards in key international spirits competitions.
  • Endeavor Brewing and Spirits  launched as a brewery in 2017 in Grandview and began releasing the results of its distilling operations in 2019. Endeavor’s liquor lineup includes craft brews, vodka, rum, dry gin, and a botanical gin. They also host rotating food trucks.
  • Watershed Distillery  started up in Grandview in 2010, then opened the state’s first restaurant connected to a distillery,  Watershed Kitchen & Bar , in 2017. Its gin and other spirits garner solid reviews, and include seasonal nocino made from spiced local black walnuts and apple brandy.
  • Quirky  451 Spirits  is tucked into an alley next to a neighborhood dive bar in Columbus’ hip residential neighborhood of Clintonville. Something of a mad scientists’ den for spirits, 451’s interesting riffs on rum, whiskey, mezcal and absinthe start with unusual mash bills and end with remarkable results, like Pizza Pie’Chuga, distiller Chad Kessler’s play on Pechuga mezcal infused with local favorite pizza Mikey’s Late Night Slice. While it sounds like a wholly crazy notion, it makes magic in a Bloody Mary.
  • Its bread and butter is distilling vodka and whiskey, but  Noble Cut Distillery  in Gahanna gets high marks for twisted takes on limoncello, the Italian citrus-and vodka-based aperitif or digestif. Distiller and co-owner Tony Guilfoy also makes his ‘cello in tart and tasty orange and grapefruit versions.
  • High Bank Distillery  in Grandview Heights has a buzzy full-service bar and restaurant which feature elevated, casual food offerings with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and a balance of both indulgent and healthy options. Its cocktail menu features both classic cocktails and in-house creations. High Bank’s Whiskey War Barrel Proof Blend recently received the Best of Class in American Blended Whiskey Award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Four roses opens expanded distillery visitor center (lots of pictures).

Four Roses has announced the opening of their expanded visitor center. The updated visitor center comes in at 14,446-square-feet and is designed to inform and educate guests about Four Roses’ bourbons, its distilling process, and its unique history.

To design and build the visitor center, Four Roses partnered with Louisville-based architecture firm Joseph & Joseph + Bravura, the same firm that in 1910 designed the distillery itself, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The new building is modeled after the existing Spanish mission-style structures unique to Four Roses and this part of the country. The interior space has an accompanying 3,850-square-foot outdoor covered patio and cocktail area.

whiskey tour columbus ohio

This new visitor’s center is another exciting accomplishment for Four Roses, the Anderson County community and Kentucky’s $8.9 billion tourism industry. Guests will be able to experience our world-famous, signature spirit with this historic distiller, a founding member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. I want to thank the Four Roses team for their investment in this community and commitment to the Kentuckians and visitors from around the world who will walk through the doors here.

The expanded visitor center will allow Four Roses to potentially double the amount of visitors they can receive each year. For context, they had nearly 85,000 guests in 2019.

The new visitor center includes the following:

  • Bar 1888 – named for the year the Four Roses name was first trademarked, with offerings from Four Roses’ current bourbon portfolio and specialty cocktails. In addition, Bar 1888 will offer selections from Four Roses’ highly acclaimed annual releases from the Limited Edition Small Batch series
  • The Al Young Archive Collection – an interactive display showcasing the range of Four Roses bottlings from throughout its 133-year history. The display is named for the beloved Al Young, who spent more than five decades in various roles at the distillery, including recording and sharing the rich history of Four Roses through years of research into archives and artifacts
  • Four seated tasting rooms offering a space for enhanced educational experiences
  • Enhanced tasting experiences, including an exclusive opportunity to taste individual selections from Four Roses’ ten bourbon recipes that are used to create its core product line
  • Expanded retail gift shop with Four Roses’ Bourbon products and other branded merchandise for sale
  • Outdoor patio space where visitors can enjoy the beautiful distillery grounds.
