Nature and civilization, together at last

A cultural fusion marrying the best of three cultures, Malaysia's native Malay, South Indian, and Chinese influences combine like a delicious Penang soup. Blessed with modern cities, ample nature, and the solid infrastructure required to get you between the two, Malaysia is varied and stress-free. Hike through tea plantations to jungle waterfalls, stroll the white-sand beaches of Langkawi or scuba dive off idyllic Tioman island. Spot jungle wildlife from treetop hideouts in Teman Negara National Park, digest Penang's open-air food stall markets or live it up in modern, vibrant KL. Think you've seen it all? There's still the "other" Malaysia: the states of Sabah and Sarawak, separated by 1,000km (621 mi) of sea, carved out of Borneo's enormous jungle expanse.

Best time to visit.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 30s most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 20s at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practised, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank (business people, government officials etc.) are respected greatly. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterised by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population) but is widely available for purchase and consumption.

Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Things to try in Malaysia

Delicious roti, chicken rice, spicy sambal eggplant and kopi peng (iced coffee).

2. Baba Nonya/Peranaken Cuisine

Fresh spring rolls, babi chin (stewed pork belly) and Mee Siam (rice noodles).

Aromatic curries, cool lassis, delicious daal and sweet fried coconut balls.

Hearty noodle broths, Peking duck pancakes and chrysanthemum tea.

Try some of Malaysia's most famous dishes on our 9day Borneo Family Holiday.

Geography and environment

Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colourful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.

While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkelling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation.

Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Top 10 culinary experiences in Malaysia

1. baba nonya banquet.

The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavours and tangy sauces.

2. Savour street eats

The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavour on a budget.

3. Taste some tea

Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held metres apart.

4. Tuck into a hot curry

Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favourite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chilli and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavours!

5. Seek out cool city eateries

The hip cafes and bars of Kuala Lumpur are a great place to mix with locals and connect with modern Asian culture. Head to the Jalan Bukit Bintang area in KL and check out the new-age teahouses, cool cafes and international dining options.

6. Down a luscious lassi

With a large Indian population, it’s not hard to find a refreshing Lassi when in Malaysia. Made from yoghurt and fresh fruit, sipping a cool Mango Lassi is the ideal antidote to a humid summer’s day.

7. Relish some rice

Chicken–rice is a favourite with locals and travellers alike. Available at small neighbourhood eateries, night markets and from street carts, this option is a great, low-cost meal for travellers on the go.

8. Slurp a bowl of laksa

Chicken, prawn, tofu and fish; there are many different varieties of spicy laksa to try while in Malaysia. Noodle types and ingredients may vary around the country - a good excuse to try laksa in every town you visit.

9. Chill out with a coconut

Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.

10. Feast on roti

No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.

Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travellers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique speciality stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 23°C to 32°C along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 14°C to 25°C in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see sub-zero temperatures at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Malaysia?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What to wear in Malaysia

Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like  Borneo  where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Malaysia?

Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Hawker food snack = 7-25 MYR
  • Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
  • Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR
  • Souvenir t-shirt = 10-35 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.

What is ATM access like in Malaysia?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

What public holidays are celebrated in Malaysia?

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 22 Jan: Chinese New Year
  • 1 Feb: Federal Territory Day
  • 21 Apr: Hari Raya Puasa (End of Ramadan)
  • 1 May: Labour Day

When is the best time to visit Malaysia?

The best time to visit Malaysia largely depends on the specific regions and experiences you have in mind. Malaysia has a tropical climate throughout the year, characterized by high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). However, it's worth noting that Malaysia experiences two monsoon seasons that can affect certain regions.

The west coast, including destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and Langkawi, experiences its rainy season from April to October. The east coast, including popular spots such as Perhentian Islands and Tioman Island, faces its wet season from November to February. During these monsoon periods, you can expect heavy rainfall and rough seas, which may limit outdoor activities and beach experiences.

For those interested in exploring the rainforests and wildlife, the dry season from March to October is generally recommended. During this time, the weather is relatively drier and more conducive for trekking, wildlife spotting, and visiting national parks such as Taman Negara and Borneo's Kinabalu National Park.

If you're planning to visit the islands and coastal areas on the west coast, the months of December to March offer better weather conditions and calm seas, making it an ideal time for beach activities, snorkeling, and diving.

It's important to note that Malaysia's weather can vary from region to region, so it's advisable to check the specific weather patterns and conditions of your intended destinations when planning your trip.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Malaysia depends on your preferences and the activities you wish to engage in. Regardless of the season, Malaysia offers a wealth of cultural experiences, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine, ensuring an enchanting journey no matter when you decide to embark on your Malaysian adventure.

Will I require a visa for my trip to Malaysia?

The visa requirements for Malaysia vary depending on your nationality and the duration of your intended stay. Here is a general overview, but it is essential to check with the Malaysian embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date and specific information based on your circumstances:

Visa Exemption: Citizens of certain countries are allowed to enter Malaysia without a visa for a specified period. For example, citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and many European countries can typically stay in Malaysia for up to 90 days without a visa.

Visa on Arrival: Some nationalities may be eligible for a visa on arrival, allowing them to obtain a visa upon arrival at selected entry points in Malaysia. This option is usually available for short visits, typically up to 30 days.

Tourist Visa: If you are not eligible for visa exemption or visa on arrival, you may need to apply for a tourist visa before your trip. Tourist visas typically allow for stays of up to 30 or 90 days, depending on the country of your residence.

Social Visit Visa: If you plan to stay in Malaysia for an extended period, such as for business, education, or visiting family or friends, you may need to apply for a social visit visa. These visas usually require sponsorship from a Malaysian citizen or resident.

It's important to note that visa requirements can change, and it's advisable to check the Malaysian immigration website or consult with the nearest Malaysian embassy or consulate in your country for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Additionally, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Malaysia, as this is a common requirement for most international travelers.

By obtaining the necessary visa or entry permit, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into Malaysia, allowing you to fully enjoy the wonders and experiences that this captivating country has to offer.

Solo-Friendly Accommodation: Malaysia offers a range of accommodation options suitable for solo travellers, including hostels, guesthouses, and budget hotels. These establishments often provide communal spaces and organize social activities, creating opportunities to connect with other travellers.

Whether you're seeking tranquility, adventure, or cultural exploration, Malaysia offers an enriching and memorable journey for solo travellers.

Will I require any vaccinations for my visit to Malaysia?

Before traveling to Malaysia, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a travel health clinic to determine the specific vaccinations you may need. The recommended vaccinations can vary based on factors such as your current immunization status, your travel itinerary within Malaysia, and the duration of your stay. Here are some commonly recommended vaccinations for travelers to Malaysia:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that your routine vaccinations, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), and polio, are up to date.

Hepatitis A: This vaccine is recommended for most travelers to Malaysia, as hepatitis A can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.

Typhoid: Typhoid fever can be contracted through contaminated food or water. The typhoid vaccine is recommended, especially if you plan to explore rural areas or eat at street stalls.

Hepatitis B: The hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with local residents, require medical treatment, or engage in activities that may expose them to bodily fluids.

Rabies: If you plan to spend time in rural areas or come into contact with animals, particularly bats or stray dogs, the rabies vaccine may be recommended. It's important to note that while the risk of rabies in Malaysia is low, it's better to err on the side of caution.

Japanese Encephalitis: If you plan to spend an extended period in rural farming areas or participate in outdoor activities during the evening or night, the Japanese encephalitis vaccine may be recommended. This vaccine is typically advised for those staying for longer durations.

Remember that these are general guidelines, and your specific vaccination needs may vary based on your individual circumstances. It's best to consult with a healthcare professional or travel health clinic at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to ensure you have ample time to complete any necessary vaccinations or boosters.

Additionally, take precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing appropriate clothing, as Malaysia is known for having mosquitoes that can transmit diseases such as dengue fever.

By taking the necessary health precautions, including vaccinations and preventive measures, you can ensure a safe and healthy trip to Malaysia.

What is the local currency inMalaysia, and can I use credit cards?

The local currency in Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). It is commonly denoted by the symbol "RM." When visiting Malaysia, it is recommended to have some local currency for small purchases, transportation, and places that may not accept credit cards.

Credit cards are widely accepted in most major establishments such as hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and tourist attractions. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted credit cards, followed by American Express and Diners Club, though their acceptance may be more limited. It's a good idea to inform your credit card company of your travel plans to ensure uninterrupted use of your card while in Malaysia.

ATMs are readily available throughout the country, allowing you to withdraw cash in the local currency using your debit or credit card. However, it's important to notify your bank beforehand about your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage abroad and to inquire about any applicable fees for international transactions.

While credit cards and ATMs are convenient for most transactions, it's always wise to carry some cash for smaller establishments, local markets, street vendors, and transportation services that may not accept cards.

For convenience and safety, it's recommended to have a combination of local currency, credit cards, and a backup source of funds while traveling in Malaysia.

What is the food like in Malaysia?

The food in Malaysia is a delightful fusion of flavors influenced by Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous culinary traditions. With its rich culinary heritage, Malaysia offers a diverse range of dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. Here are some highlights of Malaysian cuisine:

Nasi Lemak: Considered the national dish of Malaysia, nasi lemak is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves. It is often served with sambal (spicy chili paste), fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. Nasi lemak can be enjoyed at any time of the day, including breakfast.

Satay: Satay is a popular street food in Malaysia. Skewers of marinated meat, usually chicken or beef, are grilled over charcoal and served with a rich peanut sauce. Satay is commonly accompanied by cucumber, onion, and ketupat (compressed rice cakes).

Char Kway Teow: This stir-fried noodle dish is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Flat rice noodles are wok-fried with soy sauce, shrimp, bean sprouts, eggs, and sometimes Chinese sausage. Char kway teow is known for its smoky flavor and is often garnished with fresh lime.

Roti Canai: Influenced by Indian cuisine, roti canai is a flaky, crispy flatbread served with curry sauce. It can be enjoyed plain or stuffed with various fillings such as egg, onion, cheese, or even banana for a sweet variation.

Laksa: Laksa is a spicy noodle soup that comes in different regional variations. The most well-known are Penang laksa and Sarawak laksa. Penang laksa features a tangy and spicy fish-based broth, while Sarawak laksa has a creamy and fragrant coconut milk base. Both are typically served with rice noodles, prawns, bean sprouts, and garnished with herbs.

Hainanese Chicken Rice: This dish has Chinese origins but has become a Malaysian staple. It consists of poached or steamed chicken served with fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth. It is often accompanied by a variety of sauces, such as chili sauce and ginger garlic sauce.

Rendang: Rendang is a slow-cooked, rich and flavorful curry dish made with beef, chicken, or lamb. The meat is simmered with a blend of spices and coconut milk until tender and infused with a luscious sauce. Rendang is typically served with steamed rice and is considered a highlight of Malay cuisine.

Cendol: Cendol is a popular dessert and refreshing sweet treat. It consists of green rice flour jelly noodles, coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and shaved ice. It's a perfect way to cool down in Malaysia's tropical climate.

These are just a few examples of the diverse and delicious dishes you can savor in Malaysia. Whether you explore street food stalls, visit local eateries, or dine in upscale restaurants, Malaysia's culinary scene will leave you spoilt for choice and eager to embark on a gastronomic adventure.

Can I drink the tap water in Malaysia?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Malaysia. While the tap water in urban areas is treated and considered safe for washing and bathing, it may not be suitable for drinking directly from the tap. The water quality and sanitation standards can vary, especially in more rural or remote areas.

To ensure your health and prevent any waterborne illnesses, it is advisable to drink bottled water or use water purification methods. Bottled water is widely available and can be purchased from convenience stores, supermarkets, and restaurants throughout the country.

If you prefer to minimise plastic waste, you can also use water purifiers or filters to treat tap water before drinking. Boiling the tap water for a few minutes can also be an effective method to make it safe for consumption. Additionally, be cautious with consuming beverages that include ice cubes, as they may be made from tap water.

Remember to stay hydrated, especially in Malaysia's tropical climate, and carry a refillable water bottle to ensure you have access to clean drinking water throughout your travels.

As a general rule, it's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to drinking water and prioritise your health and well-being while visiting Malaysia.

Is Malaysia a safe destination to visit?

Malaysia is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. The country has a well-established tourism industry and attracts millions of visitors each year. However, it's important to exercise common sense and take certain precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some safety tips for visiting Malaysia:

Petty Theft: Like in any tourist destination, it's important to be mindful of your belongings and take precautions against pickpocketing and theft. Keep your valuables secure and be vigilant, especially in crowded places, public transportation, and tourist areas. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and use lockers or hotel safes to store your belongings when necessary.

Scams: Be aware of common travel scams and frauds. Be cautious when approached by strangers offering unsolicited assistance, deals that seem too good to be true, or requests for personal information. It's advisable to research and book tours, accommodations, and transportation through reputable and trusted sources.

Personal Safety: While Malaysia is generally safe, it's advisable to take basic safety precautions. Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. Use well-lit and populated streets, and if possible, travel with a companion, especially during nighttime outings.

Transportation Safety: Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing services, such as Grab, to ensure safety and avoid potential scams. When using public transportation, keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.

Health and Hygiene: Prioritise your health and practice good hygiene. Carry necessary medications, use insect repellent to protect against mosquito-borne diseases, and adhere to food and water hygiene practices to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Natural Disasters: Malaysia is occasionally affected by natural disasters such as floods or landslides, particularly during the monsoon season. Stay informed about weather conditions, follow official advisories, and take necessary precautions if traveling to areas prone to such events.

Local Laws and Customs: Familiarise yourself with the local laws, customs, and cultural norms of Malaysia. Respect the local traditions, dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and be mindful of local sensitivities.

As with any travel destination, it's always a good idea to stay updated on travel advisories and consult official government sources for the latest safety information before your trip. By staying informed, exercising caution, and using common sense, you can enjoy a safe and memorable visit to Malaysia.

Are there any cultural norms in Malaysia I should follow?

Yes, when visiting Malaysia, it is important to be aware of and respect the cultural norms and customs of the country. Here are some cultural norms to keep in mind:

Respect for Islam: Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, and Islam is the official religion. It is important to show respect for Islamic customs and practices. When visiting mosques or other religious sites, dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering, and follow any guidelines provided by the authorities or staff.

Dress Code: In general, Malaysians tend to dress modestly, especially in more conservative areas. While there is no strict dress code for tourists, it is advisable to dress respectfully, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Avoid wearing revealing clothing or clothing that may be considered offensive or inappropriate.

Greetings and Politeness: Malaysians appreciate polite and respectful behaviour. Greet people with a smile and use polite language when interacting with locals. Handshakes are common, but be aware that some Muslim women may prefer not to shake hands with men. If unsure, wait for the person to initiate the handshake.

Cultural Diversity: Malaysia is a multicultural country with diverse ethnicities and religions. Embrace the cultural diversity and show respect for all ethnic groups and their traditions. Be open-minded, tolerant, and refrain from making negative remarks or jokes about race, religion, or ethnicity.

Punctuality: It is generally expected to be punctual for appointments and engagements. However, it is common for social gatherings or informal events to have some flexibility in terms of timing, so it's always good to confirm the expected time with your local hosts.

Eating Etiquette: When dining with Malaysians, it is customary to eat with your right hand, as the left hand is considered unclean. If using utensils, use them with your right hand. Remember to remove your shoes when entering a Malaysian home for a meal, unless instructed otherwise.

Pointing with Feet: Avoid pointing at people or objects with your feet, as it is considered disrespectful in Malaysian culture. Use your hand to gesture or point instead.

Public Displays of Affection: Public displays of affection, such as kissing and hugging, are generally not common in Malaysian culture. It is advisable to exercise discretion and observe local norms when it comes to physical contact in public.

By being respectful, open-minded, and observant of local customs, you can ensure a positive cultural experience and create a harmonious connection with the people of Malaysia.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in Malaysia typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in Malaysia.

What should I pack for a trip toMalaysia?

When packing for your trip to Malaysia, it's important to consider the tropical climate and diverse activities you may engage in. Here are some essential items to pack:

Lightweight and Breathable Clothing: Malaysia's weather is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made of breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Opt for shorts, skirts, t-shirts, tank tops, and light dresses. Don't forget a lightweight jacket or cardigan for air-conditioned places or cooler evenings.

Comfortable Footwear: Bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals suitable for exploring cities, walking tours, and outdoor activities. It's a good idea to have a pair of sturdy sandals or water shoes for beach visits or water-related activities.

Swimwear: Malaysia has beautiful beaches and swimming spots, so pack your swimwear to enjoy the coastal areas and hotel pools.

Sun Protection: The tropical sun can be intense. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect yourself from the sun's rays. It's also a good idea to carry a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt or a beach cover-up for extra sun protection.

Insect Repellent: Malaysia is home to tropical insects, especially mosquitoes. Pack insect repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients to protect yourself from mosquito bites, especially during outdoor activities or in areas with dense vegetation.

Rain Gear: Malaysia experiences occasional rain showers throughout the year, so it's wise to pack a compact umbrella or a lightweight rain jacket to stay dry during unexpected downpours.

Travel Adapters: Malaysia uses the Type G electrical plug, so bring a universal travel adapter to charge your electronic devices.

Medications and First Aid: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring an adequate supply for the duration of your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a basic first-aid kit with essentials like pain relievers, antihistamines, band-aids, and any personal medications you may need.

Travel Documents: Don't forget to pack your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance documents, and copies of important documents in case of loss or theft. A small travel pouch or organiser can help keep your documents organised and easily accessible.

Other Essentials: Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, as well as travel-sized toiletries, a travel towel, a small backpack or daypack for day trips, and a camera or smartphone to capture your memories.

Remember to pack light and only bring what you need. Laundry services are available in most accommodations, allowing you to refresh your clothing during your trip. Additionally, check the specific activities and destinations you plan to visit to ensure you have any specialised gear or equipment required.

By packing smart and considering the climate and activities, you can enjoy a comfortable and hassle-free trip to Malaysia.

Malaysia Adventure Tours

Malaysia tempts travelers with volcanic peaks, vast rain forests, exotic wildlife, great food, innumerable beaches, and a modern outlook from a traditional society. Journeys’ trips feature the island of Borneo, or East Malaysia, where much of the tropical forest is still pristine and the orangutans still roam. We have selected award-winning ecolodges in Sabah and Sarawak from which you can explore the forest, learn about the indigenous cultures, and discover the other natural features of this little-known, but beautiful, area.

I've traveled to many places, but Malaysia was the biggest, most pleasant surprise of them all. If you want to go off the beaten path, I can't recommend this destination enough. Katina N.

Top-15 Most Thrilling Adventures in Malaysia

If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for a thrilling adventure as part of your trip around Southeast Asia, look no further than Malaysia. The Malaysia top things to do include diving at some of the best spots in the world, climbing a 4000+ metre mountain, zip lining between two islands, paragliding, rock climbing and caving. You can find awesome activities in Malaysia in both the western peninsula and Borneo. Keep reading to find out the very best things to do that most tourists don’t know about.

1. Diving at Mabul and Sipadan Island, Sabah

If you’re into diving and are travelling in Eastern Sabah, head to either Mabul or Sipadan Island off the coast of Semporna. Both islands have primary jungle and an abundance of wildlife and marine life. You’ll see hundreds of giant Barracudas, mantas, turtles and the occasional shark along with 1000s of other species.

The only difficulty is getting here. You need to reach Semporna, which involves a flight from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau. And then drive 80 kilometres to Semporna Jetty before 45 minutes on a boat to Mabul Island. Sipadan Island is a further 20-minutes away. But it’s worth the effort. Anyone who takes diving seriously may be aware that both often rate as some of the best spots in the world and are on par with the Galapagos Islands.

2. Diving in West Malaysia: Redang Island, off the coast of Terengganu.

West Malaysia has a few world-class diving spots including Redang Island to the east of the Malaysian Peninsular. Divers of all abilities are welcome and can rent equipment. It may not feel as isolated as Mabul and Sipadan, but it’s still a fantastic spot in Malaysia. If you’re a beginner or want to learn, the PADI courses at Redang Island are very affordable.

Getting to the island is relatively easy. You need to get to Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu State, by either driving or flying from Kuala Lumpur. Regular ferries depart between the jetty and the island taking one and a half hours. Just be aware that the Redang closes to the public during the monsoon season between October and March.

3. Hiking/trekking: Mount Kinabalu, Sabah

Mount Kinabalu is Malaysia’s tallest mountain reaching a height of 4095 metres (13435 feet). Located in Kinabalu National Park Ranau, the mountain is a major attraction and icon of Sabah. In the days of Paganism, Mountain Kinabalu was subject to folklore and legends making it an essential part of life and indigenous culture. The entrance is a two-hour drive from Sabah’s capital, Kota Kinabalu.

Only 135 climbers can be on the mountain at any one time due to safety reasons after a recent earthquake. You need to book in advance. In fact, because of the popularity, you should book at least six months before the date you want to climb. And even then, it may or may not be fully booked.

Unfortunately, as with most of Malaysia, different fees apply depending on nationality. Local Sabahan, Malaysians and foreigners all pay different prices with foreigners having to pay at least three times more.

The climb starts at Timpohon and you’ll begin the ascent to Laban Rata, which takes an average of six hours before staying overnight in the hostel. Malaysians and foreigners have to stay in separate accommodation with foreigners being required to pay RM10 ($2.50) as a tourist tax for the night.

The next morning, expect to begin your climb to the summit at 2:00 am. It takes between two to four hours from Laban Rata. As you reach the peak, the sun will start to rise above the horizon creating a magical experience. Don’t expect to spend long at the top. Weather conditions may force you to leave after just a few minutes. If you’re in Sabah, this is by far the most important Malaysia top things to do.

4. Hiking/trekking: Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan), Pahang

If you’re in West Malaysia and want to enjoy one of the best trekking adventures, head to Mount Tahan in Pahang State. Gunung Tahan has the title of the highest in West Malaysia at 2187 metres (7175 feet) in the Taman Negara Forest. You’ll trek through forests, mountains and along rivers to reach the summit. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. Reaching the top is one of the longest and most gruelling trekking adventures in Malaysia often taking several days to complete. The only way you can climb the mountain is by joining a tour that lasts either four days to seven days depending on fitness.

5. Zipline: Coral Flyer Zipline, Sabah

Most countries have ziplining, and you’ve probably had the chance to try it before. But have you ever ziplined between two islands across 250 metres (820 feet) of sea? In Sabah, Coral Flyer Zipline passes between Gaya and Sapi Island giving you the best views of the five islands inside Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The zipline has the title of being the longest in the Borneo and once holds the world record for the furthest distance between two islands.

6. Tandem Paragliding: Selangor

Paragliding is one of the most popular extreme sports. But not everyone is confident the first time. If this describes you, don’t despair. Tandem paragliding, where an instructor accompanies you, is available in Selangor near Kuala Lumpur. All instructors are highly qualified, and you’ll feel completely safe.

There are different packages depending on weather conditions and the day you join. Expect to pay a minimum of RM220 ($54) per person. Some companies ask for a minimum of four people and only operates on weekends.

7. Tandem Paragliding: Ranau, Sabah

Tourists in Sabah can also try tandem paragliding in Ranau, a town 108 kilometres (67 miles) to the east of Kota Kinabalu. Packages cost anywhere between RM80 and RM200 ($20 and $50) for a short flight from Lohan, Ranau’s highest point. The paragliding goes over mountains, rice paddies and small villages giving any tourist an exceptional experience.

Consider spending a few days in Ranau too. There are lots of other activities in Malaysia tourists will love in this part of Sabah including visiting the hot springs, seeing the former Mamut Copper Mine and spending the night in Ranau Town.

8. Rock Climbing: Fairy Caves, Sarawak

Sarawak has some of the Malaysia top things to do for visitors who like rock climbing. Bau, 46 kilometres (29 miles) from Sarawak’s capital Kuching, houses the Fairy Caves in a nearby village. Fairy Caves are the best place for rock climbing in Malaysia. Thousands of locals and tourists come each year to climb the rocks and experience the inside of the caves. A vast array of stalactites keep the walls in the shade and out of the rain. So, regardless of the weather, you can enjoy an afternoon of climbing. The caves also have an important part in the local traditions and culture with the Catholic Bidayuhs being the custodians of the cave.

9. Paintball-Xtion Paintball Park, Malaysia

If you're with a group of friends, paintballing is another one of the thrilling activities in Malaysia you can enjoy. There are lots of places for paintballing around the country in most major cities. Group prices are usually very reasonable, and if you book online in advance, you may be able to find a discount or special promotion. Expect to pay more if you come on the weekend.

10. White water rafting, Perak

Whitewater rafting is the ultimate thrill-seeking adventure. And Malaysia has a thick jungle with hundreds of rivers and rapids where people can get in a raft. Perak is the best place in West Malaysia for whitewater raftering. The Kampar River has a total of 14 rapids (Level 1 to 3) where anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and experience can enjoy the adventure. One of the things that makes this a must-do in Malaysia is the environment. Rafters pass through jungle and untouched natural beauty. Keep your eyes open, and you may see a monkey or two.

11. White water Rafting, Sabah

Sabah is also a favourite spot for white water rafting with several tours taking you along Tamparuli’s Kiulu River. The conditions are more comfortable than the Western Malaysian rapids making it more suitable for beginners. Expect the river to be relatively calm with a few rapids (Level 1 to 2). The tour covers a total distance of 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) with about 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) on medium water levels, which makes it the longest in Borneo. If you want to visit, expect it to take approximately one hour from Kota Kinabalu.

More experienced and advanced rafters can head to Beaufort’s Sungai Padas (Padas River), a few hours from Kota Kinabalu. The rapids are larger, faster and guaranteed to give you the thrills you’re seeking.

12. Flyboarding, Putrajaya

Flyboarding, you may or not know, is when you strap a water jetpack onto your back that propels you and the flyboard into the air. This takes place in Maritime Putrajaya, less than an hour from Kuala Lumpur. However, flyboarding is only available on weekends and public holidays with a limited number of spots. Book online to secure a place. Be aware that this activity isn’t budget friendly. A 20 minutes session costs RM370 ($91) while 40 minutes is RM689 ($170).

13. Bungee Jumping, Selangor

Malaysia has bungee jumping in Sunway Lagoon, an extreme section of a larger theme park. Compared to bungees around the world, Malaysia’s is relatively small at just 22 metres (72 feet). Visitors need to pay admission into Sunway Lagoon and then a further RM120 ($30) to do the bungee jump. Most people will spend at least a day inside.

14. Skydiving, Langkawi

Skydiving is on people’s bucket list around the world. But few follow through or lose confidence at the last moment. In Langkawi, tandem skydiving allows people without experience to jump while attached to an expert. Dives pass over Langkawi’s natural beauty and lands on the beach. In fact, it’s the only beach landing in Asia. If you’re interested, you need to contact them through their website for information on prices and requirements.

15. ATV Ride, Kuala Lumpur

An ATV is an all-terrain vehicle that drives on the road, in the mud and along trails.

If you’re into adventure and want the ultimate off-road experience, check out the tour packages from Kuala Lumpur. Rides last between one and a half to two hours and will pass through jungle, waterfalls and give views of the city and landscape. You can find various packages online. Check their website and read recent reviews before you book.

Tourists can have several thrilling adventures in Malaysia to make an already great trip incredible. Activities range from climbing mountains to convincing yourself to fly and take the plunge in tandem paragliding and skydiving. Borneo – East Sabah Adventure Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Borneo – East Sabah Adventure

Really great tour, tour guide was brilliant. We stopped in a small village (we were the only tourists there) they had a real issue with dogs, large packs constantly fighting which was quite scary. It may be an idea for the owners to keep the away or get them neutered because some of us were quite scared and the local guy walking us around wasn’t worried, his dog was actually an instigator at times.

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu Tour

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu

The itinerary did exactly as expected, showcased the highlights of Sabah. The additional activities exceeded expectations; tubing in Tambatuon village was fun for the range of ages amongst out group, on the night jungle walk in kinabatangan, we had the pleasure of strolling across an endangered tarsier. Our well-connected guide (Jerry) was actively involved in all activities and shared a wealth of knowledge, as a local. The connections Jerry has with the communities made us feel at home in Borneo. His professionalism and experience in mountain climbing made the Mt Kinabalu hike a personal highlight for me. A well-passed, humbling and spectacular adventure well worth taking.

Malaysia Highlights

Wan was a very good guide for his first trip as a tour guide. However, I wish he had asked for everyone's input consistently and ensured he received it on several things like if we should skip lunch, travel changes, etc. I also hope in the future he tries better to inform everyone of any changes in plans. I appreciated him taking good care of me when I fell ill, his friendly nature, and effort to make certain that I was satisfied with the trip. He also did a fantastic job at ensuring that the elderly gentleman that was on our trip was taken care of after learning that he needed some extra attention. My favorite thing about Wan as a tour guide was his consistency in teaching us about the culture and exposing us to native foods. Some of the people on the tour rushed me at certain stops and I hope that Wan in the future will make certain to make it clear that the tour should be respectful of everyone's personal desires to enjoy the trip. Travel Time + Itinerary: The two days where we had very long travel days, to Taman Negara and to Penang, I think could have been broken up some. During the bus ride to Taman Negara, I think a stay in the park for a few hours and having lunch would be better so that folks don't get hungry and have a proper meal. Also, the ride along the way was beautiful and it would be interesting to learn about that region. Also, it breaks up the ride which was very long! Additionally, the ride to Penang was very long and while we did stop for lunch, which was delicious, it would have been nice to stop in the national park and see some of the limestone rocks which were gorgeous. Kota Bharu: While an interesting city, the lunch we had here was the worst on the trip. I would recommend finding a better place to eat. I also felt this city was not a good place to spend the night and I recommend looking at a different place to stay, perhaps closer to Penang. Homestay - This was by far my favorite place on the trip! The host family is by far so hospitable and lovely! The food was amazing and I just loved the bike ride, learning how to grate coconut, watching the sunset, and the having meals with them. Accommodation: The hotel in the jungle should do a better job of managing breakfast to ensure ants do not crawl all over it (I saw this two mornings in a row) and this is where I got food poisoning from the sausage/hot dogs. I hope they do a better job of preparing/inspecting the food in the future.

Reviews of small group tours to malaysia.

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
Really enjoyed everything about the Borneo trip, the guide, Gobert was fun, helpful and pleasant. I would recommend this tour.
Great tour! Good combination of nature and city, easy days and active days. Lots of travelling days, which was the only downside, but that’s the only way to do all that we did.

The Most Thrilling Adventure Activities in Malaysia

Enjoy the the magnificent sunset while parachuting in Langkawi

Malaysia ’s tourism centres around food, shopping and biodiversity. But few appreciate the range of adventure activities in Malaysia available to those who know where to look. Here are nine of our favourites.

Atv ride, kuala lumpur.

For an off-road adventure in Malaysia ’s capital, check out the ATV tours. An ATV resembles a quad bike to drive on muddy trails. Tours take passengers along the river and through jungles for up to two hours. Few adventure activities in Malaysia rate as exciting as riding a 4×4 through the muddy jungle. Other parts of the country, such as Pangkor Island, offer ATV tours too.

Bungee Jumping, Selangor

Malaysia doesn’t have a reputation for bungee jumping in the same way as New Zealand. But those looking to take the plunge can find a 22 metres (72 feet) jump in Selangor’s Sunway Lagoon. While this isn’t a long drop by any standard, it is one of very few in Malaysia . Bungee jumpers first need to pay admission into the Sunway Lagoon theme park before paying an additional fee of RM138 (US$35) to jump. Selangor’s bungee jumping might not be one of the more extreme adventure activities in Malaysia , but it’s certainly worth checking out.

Flyboarding, Putrajaya.

Here’s one of the more unusual adventure activities in Malaysia : Flyboarding. Flyboarders essentially stand on a board in the water with a high-pressured jetpack attached to their back. Streams of water fire down propelling the rider into the air. Located in Putrajaya near Kuala Lumpur at Maritime Putrajaya, this somewhat unique activity might be worth trying for the experience. Limited places are available, and it only operates on weekends and public holidays, making reservations essential. Expect a 20-minute session to cost approximately RM350 (US$90).

Paragliding, Selangor and Sabah

Paragliding grows as one of the favourite adventure activities in Malaysia . Those in West Malaysia staying in Kuala Lumpur can travel to the nearby state of Selangor and take part in tandem paragliding. Expect packages to cost at least RM220 (US$56). Different companies have various packages, and it pays to enquire with different companies in advance. In East Malaysia , head to Ranau near Sabah’s Kota Kinabalu where paragliders will fly high over the mountains and tea plantations.

Hiking/trekking, Pahang

Borneo has Mount Kinabalu , West Malaysia ’s tallest peak is Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan) in Pahang. The summit sits at 2187 metres (7175 feet) above sea level inside the Taman Negara Forest. But getting the chance to reach the top isn’t the reason it’s included as one of the best adventure activities in Malaysia . The trek itself takes approximately four to seven days and passes through mountains, primary forests and rivers before reaching the summit. A guide is essential, and it requires a level of fitness, endurance and a strong sense of adventure.

Hikers going up Gunung Tahan in Pahang, Malaysia

White water rafting, Perak

Perak, on the west side of Malaysia ’s Peninsular, underwent a tourist campaign in 2017. With increased investment, it’s now easier to access some of the adventure activities found around the green and rugged state. The Kampar River contains a total of 14 rapids ranging in difficulty from Level One to Level Three. But the real thrill comes from rafting through the dense forest to the sights and sounds of the jungle, including several monkeys. Anyone looking for a chance to go white water rafting will find several opportunities in Perak. The region also has a reputation for its caves and cave related activities. Packages combining both rafting and caving start at around RM210 (US$54).

Diving, Terengganu

West Malaysia features few diving spots of the same magnitude as those found at Terengganu’s Redang Island . Located in northeast Malaysia , the small island in the South China Sea has more than 20 dive sites and two shipwrecks. Expect endless corals, tropical beaches and diving experiences similar to those in Sabah’s Sipadan . Beginners have the chance to take a PADI course at very affordable prices too. Regular ferries depart from Kuala Terengganu, the state capital, to Redang Island, taking approximately one-and-a-half hours.

Ziplining, Sabah

One of Borneo’s most highly rated adventure activities is a 530 metres (1739 feet) zipline. But the distance isn’t the only thrill in this activity in Sabah. The line passes between Gaya and Sapi Island within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park . Those brave enough will fly over a stretch of the South China Sea between the two islands.

Parasailing, Langkawi

Langkawi, ‘the Jewel of Kedah’, attracts thousands of visitors each year for its beaches, relaxation and duty-free shopping. Stroll along the island’s most beautiful beach at Pantai Cenang and see people parasailing along the coast. Several tour operators sell a 20-minute package starting at RM120 (US$31). Langkawi has a variety of other adventure activities in Malaysia too, including jet skiing around the islands tours and skydiving. Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips?
