Perhaps you’re like me; you came from somewhere that isn’t completely frigid in the winter and now live in a place that would give Scott of the Antarctic the chills. Well, that’s what happens when a Brit transplants to Minnesota, and being British, I will never stop complaining about the weather.

When it comes to winter here, I yearn for warmer climes but with the holidays at the tail end of December, I can’t be spending vast wads of cash on flights or hotels , because that money is needed for presents and Christmas goose!

There’s gotta be a solution, right? You betcha! There’s a ton of places you can travel to in winter to escape (or embrace) the cold without costing an arm and a leg.

Read on to find out more about some of the best places to travel in December on a budget in the US and other countries too. Just remember to book early, beat the holiday rush and save money !

1. Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN

Blue Line Minneapolis Light Rail

Sure, I’m trying to escape Minnesota in December but some of you folks might live somewhere that never sees snow and want your winter holidays to be *extra* wintery this year! If so, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are some of the best places to travel in December on a budget.

This is a place that truly understands winter and how best to while away the colder months, ergo it is the perfect place to enjoy winter in a truly wintry setting. Domestic flights to MSP are pretty cheap in general and will plant you right next to the action.

When you land, you’ll be a stone’s throw away from the Mall of America , the largest shopping mall in the US, perfect if you need to do some last-minute gift shopping.

Then there are the cities themselves. Saint Paul has the chill vibe and holiday postcard setting you’d find in a Charles Dickens novel or a Norman Rockwell painting. Walk along Summit Avenue or downtown Saint Paul to immerse yourself in the traditional festive aura.

But it’s not all cozy vistas. This is the state of hockey, so head down to the Xcel Energy Center to watch the Minnesota Wild go wild! Minneapolis is definitely a party town, filled to the brim with incredible restaurants , bars , pubs, breweries , and nightclubs, and is the perfect place to ring in New Year’s Eve.

Try the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden next door if you’re after culture. If you want to participate in winter sports and ski resorts , look no further, as they are legion in Minnesota.

Hockey, ice fishing, snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, broomball, whatever you do, just be sure to bring warm clothes to combat sub-zero temperatures in this winter wonderland!

2. Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas places to travel

Viva Las Vegas! Now that’s what I’m talking about! With almost perfect weather all year round and cheap domestic flights , Las Vegas is definitely one of the best places to travel in December on a budget for anyone who loathes the cold as much as me.

In December you’re likely to find great deals on rooms at most of the big-name hotels/resorts/casinos to have cash left over to enjoy this amazing city to the full.

It’s about as hard to find souvenirs in Vegas as it is to find a bad meal; i.e. everywhere sells some sort of trinket or keepsake and Vegas is famous for having great food for all tastes and budgets on every corner.

We haven’t even gotten to the best bits yet ! Aside from the excitement, glitz, and glam of the casinos on the strip and the party atmosphere Fremont Street is bathed in, Vegas is home to tons of attractions for the whole family to make your trip a memorable one.

Take in one of the many immaculate theaters, dance, comedy, or music shows – there are tons of choices every night. Learn about organized crime at the Mob Museum, admire the famous fountains at the Bellagio as well as its terrific conservatory, or see sharks up close at Mandalay Bay’s amazing aquarium.

If you want to escape Vegas’s 24/7 buzz , there are several beautiful national parks to explore just outside the city, like Zion National Park , Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the Grand Canyon – some of which can be explored from a helicopter or hot air balloon; that’s right, you can fly into the Grand flippin’ Canyon!

For real adventurers, try the Grand Circle Road Trip for truly unforgettable vistas.

3. Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles Winter

Another city famed for its near-perfect weather all year round, Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities and, surprisingly, one of the best places to travel in December on a budget. Prices of domestic flights to LA are at the lower end of the scale in December, as are most of the hotels.

That said, hotels can be a little pricey in general, so I’d recommend an Airbnb for a cheaper and more unique stay – hundreds of incredible options out there for less than $100 a night.

LA is a great place to unwind and chill under sunny skies, even in winter, maybe especially in winter, because many locals feel that the “mild winter weather” of 65 Fahrenheit is cold!

In keeping with the relaxed vibe, LA is home to several famous museums and galleries to wander through, such as LACMA, The Getty, and the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, right next to the (slightly whiffy) La Brea tar pits.

Being the world’s entertainment capital, you’ll find no shortage of live shows and events if you’re looking for something a little more lively.

The food is one of my favorite things about LA, being home to an eclectic mix of cuisines and some innovative restaurants and chefs – prepare for a Christmas dinner like no other! Staying a while, check out this guide on if you need to rent a car in Los Angeles or not .

4. Puerto Rico

best time to travel to puerto rico

The US territory of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea is another spot for fun in the sun and one of the best places to travel in December on a budget from the US, with flights as low as $150 to this tropical paradise.

The hotels and beach resorts on this incredible destination are also pretty cheap almost any time of year, but a budget hunter’s dream in the low season!

Sandy beaches are one of the biggest draws to Puerto Rico , with pristine beaches in all shapes and sizes, colors, and luminosities.

Think I’m kidding? Puerto Rico has at least one pink beach on Isla Verde (green island, pink beach, talk about a clash), and one that glows in the freaking dark at La Parguera – I double-dog-dare you to find a place more magical to celebrate the holidays !

Along with being a great beach destination , Puerto Rico is home to more examples of outstanding natural beauty and is an ideal vacation spot for hikers.

For Americans, Puerto Rico is the place to be if you ever want to experience Spanish culture without getting a passport (or splurging on flights to Europe ). The beautiful architecture around Puerto Rico’s larger towns, as does the marvelous cuisine, enjoys a Spanish colonial flavor.

The seafood here is especially good, with most of it being caught the same day it’s cooked and served. Puerto Rico’s lively nightlife is also a source of excitement, and salsa dancing in the open streets at midnight is one of the most romantic ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Read our full post on the best things to do in Puerto Rico if you plan on visiting this fantastic island.

Dark sand beaches in Hawaii

The cheapest time to fly to Hawaii is during the winter season, so this normally pricey state is on my list of best places to travel in December on a budget. If you’re hungry for warm weather, emerald valleys, sparkling seas, and black sand beaches from the world’s most active volcanoes, there’s no place on Earth like Hawaii.

There are six major islands to visit in Hawaii, consisting of Maui , Lanai, Kauai, Oahu , Molokai, and the namesake island of Hawaii – all the perfect getaway for anyone keen to avoid getting snowed in.

Snorkeling and scuba-diving are top activities in the gorgeous Hawaiian Islands. Still, by far, the favorite aquatic pastime here is surfing, known as “he’e nalu,” in native Hawaiian.

Whale watching is another popular and unforgettable experience in Hawaii. Around 10,000 humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters every winter, starting in November and lasting through the winter months until May.

These majestic, gentle giants are a breathtaking sight to behold up close and will certainly make a great gift. Golf is huge here, and Hawaii offers an incredible golfing experience with some of the most heavenly courses in the world and scenic views amidst unparalleled tropical beauty.

Hawaii is home to a fusion of Polynesian cultures, many of which haven’t touched the continental US, making Hawaii that much more special for anyone really looking for something different over the holiday season.

6. US Virgin Islands

US Virgin Islands

Although the US Virgin Islands were brutally battered by Hurricane Irma in 2017, they are now bouncing back in full force. A side bonus here is that to encourage tourists to visit the islands, prices for flights to the Virgin Islands and the cost of accommodation are extremely low, making for incredibly cheap good deals all around.

These Caribbean islands are specks of rock amidst crystal azure seas. They are the perfect island getaway for anyone who wants to get some of that tropical island feel, without spending (what feels like) days on a plane to Hawaii.

It’s home to a fascinating and storied history , dating back to 1500 BC, and a fantastic Caribbean culture. Plus, Americans don’t need to bring a passport; bonuses galore!

Experience wonderful cuisine in the form of fresh seafood and Caribbean classics with an American twist. There’s also a surprising amount of decent shopping opportunities here for anyone looking for some retail therapy.

One of the best things you can do in the US Virgin Islands is snorkeling around the coast, where there’s a good chance you’ll get to swim alongside turtles, which is a life-changing experience.

7. Austin, TX

Austin Texas

Everything’s bigger in Texas , especially the savings when planning the best budget-friendly vacations in December, with flights sometimes as low as $100, making for a super affordable vacation!

This zany, bohemian corner of the Great State of Texas is chockablock with brilliant attractions, incredible food, and a wonderfully weird art scene full.

The capital city of Texas is home to over 2,000 musicians and performers contributing to the ever-growing live music and theater scene, as well as internet giants Rooster Teeth , making Austin hallowed ground for any Red vs Blue, Achievement Hunter or RWBY fans.

As well as the hopping live music and comedy scene, the street theater is quite prevalent in Austin and you might catch yourself a show from just wandering around the city center or one of its sprawling public parks.

Austin is particularly famous for its delicious food, typically served in Texas-sized portions, which are laaarge, except for the price, meaning you’ll get way more bang for your buck at mealtime. The drink scene here is awesome, too, with several highly regarded breweries, distilleries, and vineyards to tour.

With mild winters, fewer tourists, and something for everyone, from the Austin Mural and glorious HOPE Outdoor gallery to the comprehensive Texas Military Forces Museum , Austin is one of my favorite budget-friendly places to visit in winter.

8. Ottowa, Canada

Fairmont Château Laurier

But it’s coooold in Decembeeeeer! Well, I suppose I can put the cold aside for a drop of culture. If you’ve ever been torn between visiting the United Kingdom or France , or maybe just want a taste of both without getting homesick, the Canadian city of Ottowa is the choice for you and one of the best places to travel in December on a budget if you’re looking for some snow.

This grand old city features a stunning and eclectic array of buildings, heavily inspired by classic British and French architecture, as well as sleek, modern examples that one would find in cosmopolitan Europe and skyscrapers you’d find in the US of A. It’s also delightfully divided up into charming boulevards and beautiful public parks, which are particularly romantic in winter, and free!

Apart from being a favorite among budget travelers for cheap flights and winter vacations, Ottowa is the ultimate place to learn about our beloved northern neighbors and a good place to bone up on some knowledge and Canadian history.

Perhaps the most famous (and equal parts romantic and imposing) landmark in town is the vast Château Laurier. You can tour the Canadian Parliament Building, (which is incredibly similar to Britain’s Houses of Parliament) even while it’s in session. You can enjoy orchestral performances and unique Native theater performances at the National Arts Centre.

My favorite museum in Ottowa is the Canadian War Museum , Canada’s premier military museum, the largest in the nation, and one of the best of its kind in the world, with a collection of around 500,000 artifacts.

Although hotel rates here aren’t the cheapest, plenty of terrific cheap accommodations can be found through VRBO .

Havana Cuba

Indeed, the US and Cuba didn’t have a great relationship in the latter half of the 20th Century, but the US owes a lot to Cuba; if it weren’t for Cuba, Miami would be a shadow of what it is now!

The off-season is the best time to book a winter vacation to Cuba. Why? While the flights are pretty average at around $200-300,  Cuba’s Airbnb scene is off the chain in terms of brilliant affordable lodging with insanely affordable prices – think $35 per night budget-friendly.

Airbnb might be the best way to go as the State Department lists several Cuban Hotels as restricted – book one and you might face some embarrassing questions when you come home.

It might also be a bit of a hassle to visit Cuba as an American, but not if you visit with the “Support for Cuban People” as your reason for your winter travel.

PRO TIP: There are several other ways to visit Cuba without Uncle Sam throwing a fit, but this is the easiest for tourists

Obtaining this unique “license” (hint: it’s not a real license) means you do not need to request permission or documents from the US Government to travel to Cuba, so long as you frequent Cuban-owned businesses during your trip.

That’s easier than easy since most businesses in Cuba are locally owned and really cheap places, meaning you can sample mouthwatering Cuban cuisine, find unique souvenirs to take home, and experience the incredible nightlife, worry-free, all for basically pennies.

Among the coolest things to do in Cuba, aside from enjoying seaside cervezas in your beach chair, is wandering around Havana (or other major cities and beach towns with lots of traffic), admiring the Spanish architecture and 1950s-era American cars which the locals are masters at keeping in running order.

Even if you don’t plan on partaking you should tour a cigar factory and/or a rum distillery if you can. These famous delicious Cuban vices are made using traditional methods, and the process for both is fascinating to watch.

10. Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Another tropical paradise for anyone with an adventurous streak, round-trip flights to Costa Rica rarely ever rise above $300 in winter, making this stunning land of unspoiled jungles and idyllic beaches one of the best places to travel in December on a budget, and not for the faint of heart! There are great adventure sports to be enjoyed here.

Ecotourism is thriving in this amazing country in Central America, with over 2 million species of native flora, and fauna, including tamarindo trees, Lechon pigs, and Costa Rican green turtles.

Amazingly, just under a quarter of this rugged, rainforested country comprises protected national parks , three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

It’s also home to the odd volcanic eruption from time to time! The topography guarantees there’s always something to explore, whether you’re snatching views of the majestic Arenal Volcano, swimming in the vibrant, coral-studded seas of the Pacific or Caribbean (the former on the west coast , the latter on the east coast), or zip-lining through the misty rainforest at breakneck speed.

The best part about these natural wonders is that many of them can be enjoyed for free – considering the sights, that’s a heck of a deal when looking at places to visit in December on a budget.

For culture vultures, there’s a lot to be enjoyed about Costa Rica . A unique blend of Spanish colonial influence and indigenous heritage creates a vibrant culture that spills over to the local’s laid-back temperament and traditional food.

While flights are pretty cheap in December, hotel prices are still a little pricey, so it’s a good idea to check out Costa Rica’s growing Airbnb market for a good deal and a more unique experience.

Like what you are hearing? Check out these best places to visit in Costa Rica to make the most of your getaway.

December is the perfect month to explore Uganda. The landscapes are at their greenest, yet the weather stays dry. This combination is ideal for gorilla tracking, an experience you won't forget. Beyond the cost savings, Memphis is steeped in rich cultural and musical heritage, and the temperate December weather allows for pleasant outdoor exploration.

Nashville, Tennessee

cheap travel places in december

How could I write a list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA, and not include the iconic Nashville ?

Nashville is ‘off-peak’ in December, so it’s one of the most affordable times of year to visit this musical city.

As you probably already know, Nashville offers a vibrant music scene and rich history, which can pretty much fill up an entire itinerary!

But alongside the year-round attractions, there are lots of fantastic seasons events too:

Tampa, Florida

cheap travel places in december

Tampa is next on my list of affordable locations to visit in December!

Florida, in general, isn’t the cheapest destination in the US during December because people tend to flock there for the warm weather.

But, saying that, some cities in Florida tend to be much cheaper than others. Where Orlando and the Keys will be very pricy, Tampa tends to be much more affordable in comparison.

Tampa has everything you’d expect from Florida. Great weather, lovely beaches, lots of amenities, shopping and much more.

Here are some of the more festive events you can experience during December:

  • Busch Gardens Christmas Town
  • Tampa River Lighted Holiday Boat Parade

Cheap Places to Travel in December

Ah, December – a month where the air is as crisp as the starched collar of a holiday tuxedo, and the streets are aglow with more lights than a Las Vegas marquee. It's a time when wallets tremble in fear as the holiday season beckons with the sweet siren song of sales and splurges. But fear not, my budget-conscious wanderlusters, for I, Bryan Holiday, your trusty travel sage with over a decade of globe-trotting wisdom, am here to guide you through the winter wonderland of affordable travel destinations.

In the following parchment of travel lore, you'll embark on a journey to discover the Shangri-La of cheap places to travel in December. We'll dodge the pricey pitfalls of peak season travel and unearth the hidden gems where your dollars stretch like yoga pants after Thanksgiving dinner.

So, buckle up your seatbelts and prepare to take notes faster than a college student during finals week, as we dive into the art of traveling more for less during the most wonderful time of the year.

Contrary to popular belief, and much like finding an empty row on a flight, December can indeed be the golden ticket to budget travel. While the masses are draining their bank accounts faster than a blockbuster movie shatters box office records, the savvy traveler knows the true secret: off-peak travel.

As the year winds down, so do the prices of flights and accommodations in many coveted corners of the globe. The reason? It's simple economics – less demand equals lower prices. This is the time when hotels are emptier, flights have more vacant seats begging to be occupied, and tour operators are practically doing the cha-cha slide to entice travelers with deals.

Let's not forget the holiday packages that pop up like delightful ads during your favorite streaming binge. These bundles of joy often include flights, accommodations, and sometimes even a free breakfast – because nothing tastes better than complimentary eggs and bacon as you ponder over the money you've saved.

And then there's the undeniable charm of winter destinations. Some places are blanketed in snow, offering postcard-perfect scenes and activities that don't require you to sell a kidney on the black market. Think ice-skating in Central Park, sipping hot chocolate in a cozy European café, or catching the Northern Lights on a clear Arctic night – all without the premium price tag.

Factors to Consider When Looking for Cheap Places to Travel

Before you start dreaming of sugar plums and sandy beaches, let's get down to brass tacks. Finding a budget-friendly paradise in December is akin to snagging the last piece of pie at a family gathering – it requires strategy, timing, and a little bit of luck. Here are the key ingredients to cook up a trip that's as cost-effective as it is captivating.

The cost of living is the invisible hand that either gives you a high-five or a slap on the wrist. It's the day-to-day expenses – meals, souvenirs, perhaps a whimsical hat from a street vendor – that add up quicker than likes on a celebrity's vacation post. Opt for destinations where the cost of living is low, and your dollars will multiply like rabbits in spring.

Currency Exchange Rates: The Financial Forecast

Currency rates fluctuate more than a diva's mood swings, and they can have a major impact on your travel budget. Keep an eye on the exchange rates and plan your getaway when your currency is playing the strong, silent type – robust and reliable.

Local Transportation Costs: The Commuter's Conundrum

The price of getting from point A to B shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Research local transportation options and costs. Sometimes, a city's metro system is your wallet's best friend, offering multi-day passes that are as valuable as finding an empty row on your international flight.

Seasonal Promotions: The Budget Traveler's Bonanza

'Tis the season for promotions, and travel deals are no exception. Airlines and hotels are like overzealous carolers, eager to share their offerings. Sign up for newsletters, set price alerts, and follow travel influencers who can't wait to spill the tea on the latest deals.

Just because it's winter in your neck of the woods doesn't mean it's the same elsewhere. In some countries, December is the peak season, while in others, it's the lull before the storm of tourists. Do your homework, and you'll find places where the "Welcome" mat is out, and prices are down.

If you're not careful, currency fluctuations can wash away your budget like a sandcastle at high tide. Use currency converters and financial apps to track trends and exchange money when rates are in your favor. It's like playing the stock market, but with more sunsets and less suits.

Top Cheap Destinations to Visit in December

Grab your map and a dart, my frugal friends, because we're about to pinpoint the places where your bank account can breathe a sigh of relief. December may be a time of giving, but that doesn't mean your savings account should be left out in the cold.

In Vietnam, the dong stretches further than a yoga instructor on a good day. Hanoi's street food scene is as affordable as it is delectable, offering dishes for less than the price of a latte back home. And let's not forget about the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, which, much like a classic holiday film, never gets old.

India is where your budget can truly sing, from the majestic peaks of the Himalayas to the sun-kissed shores of Goa. The cost of living here is as friendly as the local hospitality, ensuring that you can enjoy a royal experience on a commoner's budget. Just remember, bargaining is not just encouraged; it's practically a sport.

South of the border lies a land where the pesos pack a punch. Whether you're lounging on the beaches of Cancun or exploring the ruins of Tulum, Mexico offers a wealth of experiences without the need for a treasure chest. Plus, the street tacos alone are worth the trip – affordable, delicious, and Instagram-worthy.

Colombia, a country that's been stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight for all the right reasons, offers affordability without skimping on the scenery. From the colorful streets of Cartagena to the lush coffee region, your money goes far in this vibrant land. And the only thing stronger than the coffee is the value you'll get for your peso.

Portugal is Europe's not-so-secret gem where affordability meets charm. Lisbon's trams cost less than a fast-food meal, and the pastel de natas are a sweet deal. Porto's riverside wine cellars offer tastings that won't leave your wallet wincing, proving that luxury doesn't always have to come at a premium.

Greece in December is like a blockbuster hit without the summer crowds. The prices in Athens plunge as the temperature cools, making it the perfect time to explore ancient ruins without the hordes of tourists photobombing your shots. And the islands? Quiet, serene, and as affordable as a Greek god's toga.

Morocco is where the markets are as colorful as a Christmas tree and the prices as pleasing as the season's first snowfall. From the bustling souks of Marrakech to the serene Sahara, your dirhams have the power to grant more wishes than a genie's lamp.

The land of the Pharaohs is not only rich in history but also in value. The Nile's eternal grace is matched only by the evergreen prices that make a trip to Egypt a wise decision any time of the year. And in December, you can marvel at the pyramids without the sweltering heat or the peak prices.

Money-Saving Tips for December Travel

As we continue our quest for budget-friendly escapades, let's turn our attention to the alchemy of thriftiness. After all, a penny saved is a penny you can spend on a souvenir that's probably too large to fit in your suitcase. Here are some golden nuggets of wisdom to keep your wallet padded and your spirits high.

Booking Flights in Advance: The Early Bird Gets the Deal

It's an age-old tale, as timeless as the classics: the early bird catches the worm, or in our case, the unbelievable flight deal. Airlines often release their tickets at prices that seem like typos, and snagging these requires the foresight of a seasoned chess player. Set alerts, subscribe to fare trackers, and be ready to pounce like a cat on a laser pointer.

Using Travel SIM Cards for Affordable Communication

In an era where being offline is akin to being stranded on a deserted island, staying connected is key. But international roaming fees are the highway robbers of modern times. Enter the hero of our story: travel SIM cards. These little chips of communication gold ensure you can post your #TravelGoals without the fear of coming home to a phone bill that looks like a phone number.

Choosing Budget Accommodations: Sleep Soundly, Spend Wisely

The era of needing to stay at a five-star hotel to ensure a good night's sleep is as passé as flip phones. Today, budget accommodations don't necessarily mean a night spent questioning your life choices. Hostels have upped their game, Airbnb offers local experiences, and guesthouses provide the warmth of home. And if you're really adventurous, why not try a night or two in a monastery or a capsule hotel? It's like camping, but with better stories.

Eating Like a Local: Dine Fine on a Dime

Michelin stars are nice, but have you ever had street food that made you contemplate writing a heartfelt thank you note to the chef? Local eateries, food trucks, and market stalls offer authentic flavors without the gourmet price tag. Follow the locals to the spots where the lines are long, and the prices are not. Your taste buds and your budget will thank you.

Let's circle back to the humble travel SIM card, shall we? This isn't just about avoiding astronomical roaming fees; it's also about harnessing the power of apps and local data to find deals on the go. From last-minute lodging upgrades to finding that hole-in-the-wall restaurant with the best local delicacies, a travel SIM card is your gateway to savings and serendipity.

The trick to finding accommodations that are both inexpensive and incredible is to think outside the box – the hotel box, that is. Consider homestays where you can live with locals, or rental services that let you stay in a fully-furnished apartment. Not only do you save money, but you also gain a more authentic experience. It's like being a local, except with the added thrill of getting lost in a new city.

Now, let's waltz into the realm of cultural experiences, where the richness of a journey is measured not by the thread count in your hotel sheets, but by the tapestry of cultural tapestries you weave into your memory.

Free or Low-Cost Attractions: The Priceless Pursuits

Whoever said the best things in life are free must have been a traveler on a budget. Museums often have days when admission is gratis, historical sites sometimes don't cost a dime to admire, and walking city tours can be found where payment is purely tips-based. It's like a treasure hunt, where the prize is a newfound understanding of local culture and history.

Local Festivals and Events in December: The Festive Freebies

December is a month of celebrations, and what's better than festivities that are as free as your spirit ought to be on vacation? From Christmas markets in Europe to lantern festivals in Asia, these events offer a peek into the heart and soul of a place. And the only thing they'll cost you is the storage space on your phone from all the pictures you'll take.

Volunteering Opportunities: The Gift of Giving Back

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences come from giving rather than receiving. Volunteering opportunities abound for those looking to make a difference while traveling. It's a chance to connect with local communities and perhaps teach English, assist in wildlife conservation, or help out in a soup kitchen. The cost is nothing, but the value is immense – a mutual exchange of goodwill that's worth its weight in gold.

The Savvy Shopper’s Guide

The holiday season, with its spirit of giving, can extend to travel deals that seem like a gift from the travel gods. Here's how to unwrap these deals with the finesse of a child on Christmas morning:

Your quest for the Holy Grail of travel deals begins in the digital realm. Websites and apps are the modern-day marketplaces for bargain hunters. Sign up for alerts, scour discount travel sites, and don't forget to peek at the social media pages of airlines and hotels, where exclusive deals may be shared.

Timing is everything, and when it comes to booking travel, it's a dance with dates. Flexibility is your partner in this tango; being open to flying mid-week or on holidays can lead to savings that make you feel like you've won the lottery.

To package or not to package, that is the question. Package deals can be a wallet-friendly option, bundling flights, accommodations, and sometimes even meals into one neat price. But for those who prefer the road less traveled, going independent can lead to unexpected savings and adventures. It's the difference between a set menu and à la carte – both can be satisfying, depending on your appetite for adventure and savings.

As we prepare to bid adieu to our budget travel narrative, let's ensure you're equipped with the final pearls of wisdom to embark on your December journey. After all, an ounce of preparation is worth a kilo of cure, especially when it comes to travel.

Winter travel means cozy layers, but it doesn't mean you have to pack your entire wardrobe. Opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Think thermal wear, a reliable jacket, and accessories that double as both fashionable and functional. And remember, in the land of luggage, less is more – especially when airline baggage fees loom like the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

While we all wish for holidays filled with nothing but joy and Instagram-worthy moments, the wise traveler knows that sometimes things go awry. Travel insurance is that guardian angel that you hope to never need, but will be eternally grateful for if you do. Look for policies that cover trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and, yes, even lost luggage.

Safety is also paramount, as the only ice you want to encounter is in a festive drink, not on a slippery sidewalk. Keep abreast of local weather and safety advisories, and always have a plan B for transportation in case Jack Frost gets a little too nippy.

In the grand debate of international SIM cards versus local SIM cards, consider your needs and length of stay. International SIM cards offer convenience, but local SIMs can be cheaper and provide better coverage. It's the classic traveler's conundrum, akin to choosing between window and aisle seats.

Diving deeper into travel insurance, don't let the fine print intimidate you. Ensure your policy fits your destination and the activities you're planning. Are you going to ski down the Alps? Make sure your policy doesn't leave you out in the cold if you take a tumble.

As for SIM cards, think of them as your lifeline to the world. They keep you connected to loved ones, help you navigate foreign lands, and ensure you can always find the nearest spot for a warm meal or a cold treat. Research ahead of time to find the best option for your travel style and budget.

And there you have it, fellow globetrotters – a compendium of tips, tricks, and tidbits to make your December travels as cost-effective as they are exhilarating. As you set forth on your adventures, remember that the true value of travel isn't found in the price tag, but in the breadth of experiences and the wealth of memories you create.

As the curtains close on our budget travel guide, we hope you're now armed with the knowledge to make your December journey both merry and bright. From the steamy street stalls of Vietnam to the ancient allure of Egypt, the world is brimming with affordable wonders waiting to be explored.

So go forth, explore, and let the spirit of adventure be your guide. And when you return, full of stories and souvenirs that didn't break the bank, remember that the greatest gift you can give yourself is the experience etched into your soul – the experience of seeing the world.

Thanks for visiting our blog, are you planing to travel to   Europe ? Check out our   eSIM Europe .

Before you take off make sure to check with   local government   of the travel status.

As we've traversed the globe together through the written word, you may find yourself pondering some lingering questions. Fear not, for I shall endeavor to illuminate the murky waters of travel uncertainties with the beacon of knowledge.

The skies are generous in December, offering budget-friendly wings to those who know where to look. Southeast Asia beckons with open arms and cheap fares, particularly to countries like Vietnam and Thailand, where the cost of a flight often pales in comparison to the richness of experience. Central America, with gems like Guatemala and Nicaragua, also tends to have more wallet-friendly skies. And let's not forget the domestic deals within the U.S., where cities like Las Vegas and Orlando often see a dip in prices as they gear up for the holiday rush.

Accommodations need not be a financial sinkhole on your travels. Embrace the world of hostels, which have shed their spartan skins and embraced a more boutique charm. Websites like Hostelworld and Booking.com can be your allies in this quest. Alternatively, platforms like Airbnb allow you to snag a local abode for a fraction of the hotel price. And for the truly adventurous, services like Couchsurfing can open doors to free stays and new friendships.

Indeed, the humble SIM card can be a traveler's best friend. For those jet-setting internationally, consider purchasing a global SIM card before departure to avoid the scramble upon landing. Companies like OneSimCard and WorldSIM offer options that work in multiple countries. If you're staying longer in one place, a local SIM card can be a boon for your budget. Just ensure your phone is unlocked and ready to accept new cellular relationships.

Free activities abound for the keen-eyed traveler. In Europe, wander the festive markets; in Asia, take part in local religious ceremonies or explore the myriad of temples. Many cities offer free walking tours – just look for the guides with the brightly colored umbrellas. Nature, too, does not charge admission, so hikes, beach days, and park picnics are always on the budget-friendly menu.

Aside from the aforementioned travel SIM cards, savvy travelers can also lean heavily on free Wi-Fi, which is becoming as common as a tourist with a camera. Cafés, libraries, and even some public squares offer this service. Apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and Viber allow you to call and text over Wi-Fi, and social media platforms can keep you connected with those back home without spending a dime.

The 12 Best Places to Travel in December

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Miami

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone in winter

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

Azores

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Best Places to Travel in December Salzburg at Christmas

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Over at The Spectator Hotel , personal butlers assigned to each guest can transform your room with personalized Christmas decorations, plus bring you any treats and drinks you request.

Whistler Canada

Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago Chile

Santiago, Chile

Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

Antarctica

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

Moskito Island British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

best places to travel in december Paris

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

For an extra-special holiday experience, book a spot on the “ Paris at the Holidays ” group trip (November 30–December 7) from specialty planning company French Affaires. Curated by France travel expert Elizabeth New Seitz, the trip includes an evening tour of the city’s Christmas lights, a private tour of the Louvre, a Buche de Noel (yule log) cooking class, and French afternoon teas at some of the city’s top palace hotels.

The best places to visit in December 2024

December may mean the year is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean your travel plans have to. If you’re looking for the best places to visit in December, here are some of Lonely Planet’s top picks. Whether you want stunning northern lights, tropical beach adventures, or cozy Christmas markets, here are some great options to add to your December travel plans.

Where are the best places to travel in December for relaxation?

Left: people snorkle through turquoise water in the Philippines. Right: People sit next to their bikes while watching the sunset in San Diego.

1. Palawan, Philippines

Why now? Dry skies for wet adventures.

Dubbed “ the Philippines ’ last ecological frontier,” pristine Palawan —the country’s westernmost province—is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a haven of biodiversity above and below the water line. There are over 1,700 islands here, covered by virgin forest, edged by limestone cliffs and fringed by coral reefs. The diving is varied and spectacular. At El Nido , in the north, there are 20-plus dive sites where exciting sightings range from nudibranchs and seahorses to turtles and huge shoals of snapper. Around Coron Island , there’s thrilling wreck diving, with numerous WWII remnants to explore. There’s also decent diving in easy reach of the capital, Puerto Princesa —sites include walls and pinnacles, a variety of corals, plenty of unusual macro species, colorful reef fish, crustaceans, schooling barracuda and jacks, rays and reef sharks. Puerto Princesa is also the gateway to the Subterranean River National Park , a navigable underground waterway through incredible karst formations.

2. San Diego, California

Why now? For city life, winter sun, Santa and cetaceans.

This cool California city might seem like an odd pick for great winter destinations in North America , but hear us out. In San Diego rain is more likely, but days remain mild (average highs: 66°F/19°C). It’s certainly still warm enough to wander the city’s village-like neighborhoods—fancy La Jolla , surfy Encinitas, alternative Ocean Beach , foodie Little Italy, the lively, bar-packed Gaslamp Quarter—and to lose yourself in enormous Balboa Park , with its museums (Air & Space, Art, Natural History) and world-famous zoo .

For further wildlife encounters, book a boat tour, or head to the cliff-top trails of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in the hope of spotting dolphins and migrating gray whales, which pass along the coast here between December and March. For a different kind of “wild life,” try a pub crawl in hipster-chic North Park or “coastal cool” Pacific Beach, and dive right into San Diego’s craft beer and cocktail scene.

3. Puerto Vallarta, México

Why now? It’s the most wonderful time of the year for sun, sand and surf.

Usually, by December, the Bahía de Banderas region of Mexico’s Pacific Coast is well into its dry season. (The wet season usually lasts from June to October.) With daytime highs reaching around 81°F (or 27°C) and just over an inch (or 33 mm) of rain for the entire month, Puerto Vallarta offers pretty much the perfect weather to enjoy picture-perfect days at some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. If you like getting active in the water, drive north to Punta de Mita or Sayulita on the Riviera Nayarit for beaches with fantastic surf breaks, or take a boat ride south to Majahuitas or Yelapa for secluded beaches with uniquely spectacular scenery.

For those who prefer adventures on dry land, Puerto Vallarta has much more to explore beyond the beach. At Isla Río Cuale , you can explore this lush and verdant park at the heart of the city, and you can peruse the offerings at the local artisan market. At the Zona Romántica neighborhood to the south of Río Cuale, you’ll find many of the city’s finest art galleries and liveliest nightlife. And all around town, keep your eyes out for some incredibly tasty local restaurants and food stands.

Where are the best places to travel in December for wildlife and nature?

A bushcamp in Central Kalahari; the northern lights in Arctic Sweden.

4. Central Kalahari, Botswana

Why now? For cheaper prices and greater game.

In this immense wildlife reserve, covering 50,000 sq km (19,305 sq miles) and one of the largest in the world, rain does not stop play. Indeed, it positively encourages it. While December marks the start of the rainy season in Botswana , it’s the best time to visit the semi-arid Central Kalahari . In the northernmost areas, around Northern Deception Valley in particular, the flush of wildflowers and grasses attracts great gatherings of grazers, which in turn attract predators—large numbers of hyena, leopard and the reserve’s famed black-maned lions are all found here. This is also the best time for birding, as many species are wearing their breeding plumage and migrants are around. Roads may become trickier to navigate but the payoff is excellent wildlife viewing and, at times, soul-stirringly stormy skies. There are opportunities to engage with the San people too.

5. Arctic Sweden

Why now? Sleep on ice beneath the Northern Lights.

At the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi, one degree of latitude north of the Arctic Circle, the sun never rises in the last three weeks of the year. In December, darkness is the dominant state— perfect for watching the Aurora Borealis . Jukkasjärvi is the home of the original Icehotel, where you can spend a night in a bed made of ice. The area is also a base for cross-country skiing, husky sledding, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, meeting reindeer—we consider their seasonal migration to be one of the seven wonders of winter —and learning about traditional Sámi culture —magical for kids and grown-ups alike. Some 100km (62 miles) to the northwest, Abisko National Park is even further removed from the light, an otherworldly landscape offering arguably the world’s best aurora-watching.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Why now? Chill mountains and cool vibes in this “City Different.”

Usually, when folks think of great skiing in North America, they envision the hallowed mountains of Aspen and Vail in Colorado. Yet further south in the Rocky Mountains, you can discover a different kind of winter ski experience in and around the “City Different” of Santa Fe . Not only can you enjoy the remarkably scenic “ High Road ” to the world-class slopes of Taos, but you can even enjoy fun slopes for skiers at all levels at Ski Santa Fe (which is only 16 miles [or 26km] from town).

Even if you’re not into skiing, Santa Fe places you in the heart of Northern New Mexico’s greatest of great outdoors. From the artistically inspiring landscapes of Abiquiú to the ancient history at Bandelier National Monument , and the local Foothill Trails that lead into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Santa Fe has plenty of amazing parks and public lands to keep you active.

Where are the best places to travel in December for culture?

A sign saying "joyeux noel" hangs in a tropical tree; kids run and play on a monument in India.

7. Martinique

Why now? Sing carols with a Creole twist.

December doesn’t just mean Christmas in the French Caribbean. It means Chanté-Nwel. One of Martinique ’s biggest annual festivities, held across the island from November to Christmas Day, it sees people gather to sing carols to Creole rhythms (a practice dating back to the days of slavery) and feast on local favorites including yams, pâtés, boudin créole (blood sausage), yule logs and potent shrubb— a Christmas cocktail crafted from dried orange peel, sugarcane syrup and white rum. Very festive. All that’s missing is the snow: with sunny skies and average highs of 82.4°F (28°C), this is perfect beach weather; chill out on the vast sweep of white sand at Les Salines or the black sand of Anse Noire .

8. Chhattisgarh & Odisha, India

Why now? For cultural encounters in milder weather.

The neighboring states of Odisha ( Orissa ) and Chhattisgarh (a breakaway chunk of Madhya Pradesh) offer perhaps the most authentic insight into rural India . These regions are largely neglected by tourists, perhaps due to their lack of “big” sights. But the appeal here is in getting away from the cities and meeting the people, such as the majority Gond (famed for their vibrant art), the tattooed Kutia Kondh, the Indigenous groups of the jungles around Jeypore, the bead-wearing Bonda or the cultural melee of a haat bazaar (weekly market), where many tribal groups gather to haggle over everything from butter and salt to clothes and jewelry. The Bastar region of Chhattisgarh is a good place to start—visit markets, hike between village homestays and witness tribal festivals: the Madai Festival, which moves around the communities of Bastar, Kanker and Dantewada, is celebrated from December to March (when temperatures are mild, too).

9. London, England, UK

Why now? For an extra festive holiday spirit you can’t find anywhere else.

You can easily hear London calling year-round, but there’s something extra special about visiting this storied British mega-city in December. Sure, other European cities have their own Christmas markets, but London’s Christmas markets go above and beyond to get you in the perfect holiday spirit while you load up on tasty treats and charming gifts. Beyond the Christmas markets, you can also expect plenty of holiday cheer at iconic landmarks like Kew Gardens , the London Zoo, Hyde Park , and the “ Hogwarts in the Snow ” Harry Potter experience at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

While London tends to get rain and somewhat chilly temperatures during December, you probably won’t have to worry about the weather dampening your travel plans. If anything, this is a great time to take advantage of the (relatively) thinner tourist crowds and check more places off your London bucket list.

Where are the best places to travel in December for food and drink?

Grab a cookie in a Black Forest Christmas market; eat some suckling pig in Puerto Rico.

10. Black Forest, Germany

Why now? For a touch of Teutonic magic.

The Black Forest is Germany ’s most romantic, fairy-tale-laced region, and it’s always a solid pick for fun winter destinations in Europe . And never more so than in December, when its rolling hills and dense-packed evergreens might be sprinkled with snow and when everywhere is sprinkled with Christmas. The lively university town of Freiburg is a fine festive choice.

Its medieval center of cobbled lanes and gabled houses is lovely to wander at any time, but now smells of Glühwein  (mulled wine) and gingerbread; browse the Christmas market, where you can make your own candles and cookies, ride the Ferris wheel and feast on raclette and wurst. Further afield, take the train or bus to nearby Hinterzarten for the striking Ravennaschlucht market, where traditional stalls cluster in a gorge beneath the Devil’s Valley Railway viaduct.

11. Puerto Rico

Why now? For a never-ending Noel.

If you’re looking for some unique Christmas vacation ideas, look no further than sunny and spirited Puerto Rico ! Other places may celebrate the 12 days of Christmas, but Puerto Rico stretches it all the way to 60 days, starting with Thanksgiving (this is a US “unincorporated territory,” after all) and not finishing until mid-January. Visit in December and you’ll likely come across shops stacked with festive trinkets, late-night parrandas (carol singing in the streets), church Masses filled with aguinaldos (Christmas songs) and the hearty consumption of festive feasts: lechón (suckling pig), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), pork-and-potato pasteles (steamed plantain tamales) and coquet (sweet spiced coconut drink). The Día de los Inocentes (28 December) is particularly fun, akin to April Fool’s Day, when people play tricks on each other—head to Hatillo for the best high-jinks.

Season’s greetings aside, Puerto Rico may be one of the most underrated and over-achieving warm winter destinations in the US . In December, the weather is wonderful for exploring this proudly Latino Caribbean idyll. Wander the bright alleys of Old San Juan (founded 1521) and lively second-city Ponce ; venture into El Yunque for rainforest hikes; check out the surf at Rincón ; and consider sailing over to the islands of Vieques and Culebra for quieter sands and dazzling after-dark kayaking in Bioluminescent Bay.

12. Santiago, Chile

Why now? For fantastic flavors and scenery worth savoring.

At first glance, Santiago seems like an odd place to visit in December. But once you remember that Chile is in the Southern Hemisphere, you realize that December brings ample warmth and almost no rain to Chile’s capital city. Even better, Santiago has a slew of innovative and downright revolutionary restaurants—such as Boragó and 99 Restaurante —worth splurging. Even if you’re more in the mood for street food, Santiago has you covered with a wide array of markets and stands offering local seafood, empanadas, and authentic Chilean hot dogs that you simply have to taste to believe.

Of course, since you’re in Chile, this is your prime opportunity to head out and explore wine country. Fortunately, wine regions like the Casablanca, San Antonio and Maipo Valleys are nearby. For something even closer, check out Santiago’s best local wine bars .

Where are the best places to travel in December for adventure?

A person in red skis down the slopes Slovenia; a surfer on the beach enjoys the storms on Vancouver Island.

13. Slovenia

Why now? Crowd-lite, multi-sport, fairytale snow fun.

While snug-sized Slovenia  can’t compete with Europe’s winter-sports big boys, the country is still splendid when the snow starts to fall. There is good skiing, albeit on a smaller scale.

Resorts such as lively Kranjska Gora, reliable Krvavec and family-friendly Vogel aren’t huge but also aren’t as busy as other Alpine hubs. But where the country really excels is in multi-activity winter breaks, combining downhilling and snowboarding with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow-hiking, ice-climbing or even igloo-building and night tobogganing. The landscapes are thrilling, too, with most resorts located in and around the handsome Triglav National Park . Photographers will love the high peaks, frozen waterfalls, snowy forests, beautiful Lake Bohinj and magical Lake Bled , with its lake isle and castle shimmering in the frost.

14. Vancouver Island, Canada

Why now? For really wild times.

As winter arrives, the restive region where Arctic and subtropical air collides shifts south, and low-pressure systems build in the Gulf of Alaska. This equals stupendous storms, which thwack the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island , stirring up gigantic swells, roaring winds and epic skies. It’s Mother Nature at her most marvelously unhinged and cinematic—and it’s worth braving a bit of weather for front-row seats. On the edge of Pacific Rim National Park, the little town of Ucluelet (meaning “people of the safe harbor”) is a great place to watch the action unfold.

15. Andermatt, Switzerland

Why now? This town offers the ultimate ski town paradise.

Sure, Andermatt may not be anywhere near as recognizable (to foreigners) as Switzerland ’s most famous ski resort towns, such as St. Moritz and Zermatt. But really, this is a great reason to come here for ski season. Once a quiet and seemingly hidden military outpost, Andermatt has recently evolved into a more sophisticated resort town, yet at heart it’s still a ski town that caters to all.

For beginners of all ages, the Nätschen Mountain has areas set up to help you hone your skills, including a “moving carpet” that you just have to try for yourself. For more advanced skiers, Gemsstock is the mountain to ski for next-level adventures, especially the north-facing slope that gets the most reliable snowfall. No matter where you go to ski (or even if you don’t ski at all), stick around town, and Andermatt won’t let you down for après-ski fun, from casual drinks at the village’s established pubs to uniquely upscale offerings at The Chedi hotel.

Finally, let’s answer some questions.

Where's the best place to vacation in december.

Really, this is for you to decide. But if you’re still feeling a little stumped, here are a few basic pointers to keep in mind. If you prefer a warm escape to a tropical island, December may be the best time of the year to head to the Caribbean and enjoy the pleasantly warm weather and abundant sunshine.

On the flip side, if you prefer engaging in winter sports activities during the winter season, the European Alps is the ultimate nirvana for skiers and snowboarders. In addition, the Rocky Mountains has some of the United States’ top ski destinations in Colorado and New Mexico.

What is the warmest place to travel in December?

As noted above, the Caribbean has plenty of warm, sunny days during the winter season. In addition, Mexico’s Pacific Coast beach resort towns—such as Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos—tend to stay pleasantly warm and dry in December.

Heading beyond North America, December is a good month to head to the Middle East and enjoy the cooler (but still warm) temperatures in places like Cairo, Sharm-el-Sheikh, Dubai, and Muscat. And for something completely different, keep in mind that December marks the start of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Should you opt for a December trip to Chile, South Africa and Australia, you’ll head south for a hot summer festive season.

Are there specific places with notable holiday festivities in December?

If you like the idea of winter travel that really lets you feel the spirit of the season, then Europe is one continent full of winter wonderlands. Not only can you head up the Alps for beautiful snow-covered mountains and forests, but many cities host expansive Christmas markets featuring tasty treats and heartwarming stocking stuffers.

If you prefer celebrating the warm and cozy spirit of the winter holidays in actual warm weather, you have some great options throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Some standouts include Mexico’s nearly month-long Christmas celebrations full of Posada caroling, colorful Nochebuena Christmas Eve traditions and tasty tamales available all season long. Also, don’t sleep on Puerto Rico, as this US Caribbean island territory really comes alive with incredibly heartwarming (and belly-filling!) celebrations throughout December.

Where are some budget-friendly travel destinations for December?

Last, but certainly not least, you might be wondering where are the best places to travel in December on a budget. Unfortunately, December usually marks the high season at a number of tropical beach resorts and snowy ski resorts where travelers love to flock during this most wonderful time of the year. With this said, you can find some good deals if you know where to look.

For instance, you may be able to save on a Caribbean beach vacation by booking in advance and taking advantage of all the free activities in Puerto Rico, as opposed to following the crowds to the mega-popular resorts in places like Aruba and the Virgin Islands. Meanwhile for skiing, more underrated mountain towns like Santa Fe will likely go easier on your wallet than the major-league Colorado ski towns that tend to command top dollar rates in December.

14 Best Places to Visit in December

Written by Joni Sweet and Meagan Drillinger Updated Apr 25, 2022

After summer, December is one of the busiest times of year to travel. People are flying home or to exotic locales for the holidays. Others are getting a jumpstart on ski season. And wanderlusting workaholics are making the most of their time off work to squeeze in one last trip before the end of the year.

But despite the crowds, December is a magnificent time to take a vacation. Christmas markets abound in Europe, especially in Nuremberg and Strasbourg . St. Lucia proves to be the perfect tropical getaway for snow birds up north. December brings some of the best weather of the year to Patagonia. And there's nowhere like New York City for the holidays.

For more ideas on winter travel, check out our list of the best places to visit in December.

Nuremberg, Germany

Bangkok, thailand, new york city, strasbourg, france, hokkaido, japan, london, england, banff, alberta, jackson hole, wyoming, patagonia, chile, cape town, south africa, jukkasjärvi, sweden, big island, hawaii, dubai, united arab emirates, map of places to visit in december.

Christmas market in Nuremberg

The Christmas markets of Europe are one of the biggest attractions in the world in December, and no other city decks the halls quite like Nuremberg. The small Bavarian city is home to one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, which has been an annual event at the Hauptmarkt since at least the 1500s.

If you can swing it, try to arrive in Germany in late November, so you can see the highly anticipated Nuremberg Christkind (a gift-giving sprite from German Christmas fables) deliver a prologue in the Main Market Square to mark the opening of the market on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent.

But even if you miss that event, you'll still be able to enjoy all the charm of the Nuremberg Christmas market during the month of December. Chow down on the city's signature bratwurst and gingerbread, shop for traditional wooden toys and knit hats, and collect a few ornaments for your Christmas tree. There's also a delightful carousel for little ones (and the young at heart).

Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok

December is the best time of year to visit Bangkok. The monsoon downpours taper off in November, bringing about relatively cool, dry weather to the Thai capital the following month. Expect evening temperatures in the low 20s Celsius, with the mercury hitting 32 degrees Celsius at its highest point during the day.

Take advantage of the pleasant sightseeing weather to explore some of Bangkok's top things to do . The Grand Palace is a must-visit. The nearly 250-year-old palace served as the home for many Thai kings and their royal courts, and features astoundingly ornate architecture. It also houses the sacred Emerald Buddha.

Head just south of the royal compound to see Wat Pho, the oldest temple in Bangkok, where you can marvel at the famous 45-meter-long reclining Buddha statue.

After seeing the attractions, soak up the atmosphere of this bustling city. The backpacker district of Khao San Road is a swirl of color and action, with blaring music, street vendors hawking souvenirs, and guesthouses galore. You can also find the best street food in Bangkok in this area. Don't miss the mango sticky rice.

One of the quintessential things to do in New York City this time of year is visit Rockefeller Center . It's home to the Big Apple's iconic Christmas tree and a seasonal ice-skating rink that's been an annual tradition since 1936. At nearby Radio City Music Hall , you can watch more than 140 members of the world-famous Rockettes perform their high kicks in unison during the Christmas Spectacular holiday stage show.

Shopping in New York hits its peak in December, as well. Stroll down Fifth Avenue to see the festive holiday window displays in storefronts, and visit department stores like Bloomingdale's and Macy's to pick up gifts for all your loved ones.

Just over the border from Germany in France, tourists can find another one of the best places to visit in December: Strasbourg. Like its neighbors in the Black Forest , this historic city also throws a renowned Christmas market that swirls with both French and German traditions.

The destination's half-timbered buildings along pristine waterways serve as a fairy-tale-like backdrop for the annual Christkindelsmärik , one of the oldest markets in the city. Shopping from international vendors and sipping on a warm drink while snowflakes dance down on the twinkling market is an experience you'll never forget.

Continue your yuletide sightseeing at Place Kléber , where you'll find the Great Christmas Tree. The massive arbor towers at least 30 meters over the city and features some seven kilometers of twinkling lights, 240 illuminated cherubs and 400 baubles. It's sure to get you into the holiday spirit.

On the first Thursday of December, tourists can watch the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony . Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a favorite experience among locals and tourists alike for its observation wheel, amusement park rides, ice-skating, and gift market.

The 18 Cheapest Places to Travel in 2022

Plan an exciting vacation without spending an arm and a leg.

cheap travel places in december

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Fly against the grain and get rewarded with major savings.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

Atlanta has all the big-city perks at prices far more wallet-friendly than most of its counterparts. Splurge on a SkyView Ferris wheel ride for views of Centennial Olympic Park and beyond, and go in January for the lowest possible prices. There are lots of things to do in Atlanta during this time of year, from visiting the marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium to learning about local history at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. Chilly January may be the cheapest month to visit, but luckily, you can still check out places like the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens ($5 donation encouraged) in the urban oasis of Druid Hill Park.

San José, Costa Rica

The capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is a must-visit for any intrepid traveler. Expect Victorian mansions, nightlife in El Pueblo, lots of culture, and surrounding historic coffee plantations.

Check out the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum for a glimpse into what it might look like to have an unlimited jewelry budget. Admission is $15 for non-residents, but offers access to more than 1,500 gold objects and artifacts. Head to San José in May for the cheapest airfare to this lively (and affordable) city.

Dallas, Texas

This year, visit Dallas outside of Cowboys football season — like in January, when prices are at their lowest. During this time, you can expect more reasonable rates, but still get in on the sports action by catching a home game for the Mavericks (basketball) or the Stars (hockey).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, but if you prefer to devote the majority of your dollars to slots and shows rather than airfare and accommodations, go in January. Just don't expect hot temps, as even the desert gets cold in the winter. Here are some more tips to keep in mind and mistakes to avoid on your next trip to Sin City.

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Visit in January for great flight deals, and don't miss the cobblestone streets of historic Casco Viejo.

Tampa, Florida

Florida as a destination is hotter than ever, but Tampa isn't as inundated with crowds as the state's other major cities — plus, its location on the western coast promises gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Go in January for a good deal, warm (but not sweltering) temps, and plenty of sunshine.

Hamilton, Bermuda

If January's chill has you dreaming of pink-sand beaches, you're in luck, as it's a great month to visit Bermuda. Fly into Hamilton and stroll Front Street for a peek at the pastel buildings that are iconic to this glitzy British island territory, but stick to window-shopping if you want to keep your trip cheap. Biking and beach-hopping are the name of the game here.

Boston, Massachusetts

January may be the cheapest month to fly to Boston, but it's not the best season for strolling its idyllic Common or touring the Freedom Trail. Luckily, many stops along the historic route are indoors — and cheap (like the Paul Revere House, which is just $6 per adult).

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is another popular destination for American travelers. January is the least expensive month to visit the two most affordable cities to fly into: Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Though Santo Domingo is the country's capital, it doesn't have to be an expensive visit. Take in the architecture that dates back to the late 1400s and stroll the Colonial Zone for a memorable (and free) experience.

Punta Cana, on the other hand, is known as a tourist hot spot with plenty of resorts (and ways to spend lots of money). However, some of life's greatest treasures — like sandy beaches and waterfall hikes — are as free in Punta Cana as they are anywhere else.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

You don't need a passport to fly to St. Thomas, but you'll have a hard time believing this jaw-dropping, colorful island is technically U.S. soil. Make sure to visit Magens Bay, climb the 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie, and marvel at the sheer blueness of the water surrounding this popular cruise ship port. Go in January for the best flight prices; you'll be glad for the savings when you see what accommodations cost on this luxurious island.

Denver, Colorado

Denver has a ton to do, even in January, which is the cheapest month to visit. Hitting the slopes is hard to do at a discount (unless you go in the summer to hike instead of ski), but at least you'll save money on airfare if you visit Denver during this snowy month.

Moscow in December is not for the faint of heart. Despite the fact that it's downright frigid, though, seeing the Russian capital's ornamental sites cloaked in snow is worth going in the colder months.

Whether you're eager to watch the famous ballet perform or more interested in admiring the incredible architecture of Saint Basil's Cathedral (and other landmarks), Moscow has something to offer just about everyone, as long as you bundle up.

The city's winter begins in November and lasts through February. In December, the weather is unusually cold and wet with snow. On average, Moscow sees .7 inches of snow during the whole month, but it isn't the type that clears up after a day or so. With temperatures lingering below freezing, the snow typically sticks around until the big springtime thaw.

The average temperature for this time of year is 23 degrees Fahrenheit (-5 degrees Celsius), although it could dip into the teens at times. Wind chill is a major factor to consider when traveling around Moscow, as it can make the city feel much colder than what it actually is. Winds in December average 12 miles per hour. The city is quite dark during this time of year, too, averaging just seven hours of sunlight per day.

What to Pack

Prepare for the freezing conditions simply by packing as warm as possible. Winter travel is tricky because warm clothes are so bulky and they weigh so much. Rest assured, though, you'll be happy you used your suitcase space on clunky boots and big coats rather than an abundance of cute sweaters when your toes are toasty and dry. Don't forget to bring:

  • Hats, gloves, and scarves
  • A high-quality coat
  • A waterproof shell
  • Wool base layers
  • Waterproof boots

December Events

Even though Moscow doesn't celebrate Christmas until January, the city still feels festive throughout the month of December with plenty of winter performances and celebrations to ring in the season.

  • The annual Winter Festival kicks off in the middle of December and continues until early January. Ice skating, winter markets, and amusement park rides are all part of the fun.
  • " The Nutcracker" originated in Russia, so watching this world-famous ballet in Moscow is a major cultural experience. The Royal Moscow Ballet does the famed Tchaikovsky work justice with 32 dancers, 80 sumptuous costumes, and a visually stunning set.
  • On December 31, New Year's Eve celebrations take over Red Square. Consider watching the fireworks display from another vantage point (such as Tverskaya Ulitsa or the Balchug Kempinski Hotel) if you can't handle standing for hours in the cold.

More Travel Tips

  • Christmas in Russia takes place on January 7, but the time between Christmas and New Year's is usually a time of rest and vacation for Russian families, many of which jet off to warmer destinations.
  • Head to Red Square to see the New Year's Tree and look for decorations at GUM, Arbat Street, and other well-known locations.
  • Moscow's outdoor ice skating rinks provide the opportunity to enjoy one of Moscow's most popular cold-weather activities.
  • A Moscow museum visit is the perfect way to escape the cold outside. You can easily spend hours in the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Armory Museum, or the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
  • Some businesses such as restaurants and family-owned stores may close or have reduced hours during the holiday period between Christmas and New Year's.
  • While you might be tempted to imbibe the copious amounts of Russian vodka available, consume in moderation: Drunkenness causes heat loss.
