Where to watch cruise ships in Ft Laudedrale: The jetty at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park

Often I come to you live on  Periscope  or Facebook Live where we all talk ship and watch cruise ships sail-away from Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park next to Port Everglades.  Many of you ask exactly where I am and how you can get there when you're in the Ft Lauderdale area (tip: it's also a great place to enjoy the beach).  Let's talk about where the park is, how to get to the jetty, and other tips for enjoying some time watching cruise ships full of people starting their vacation.

Update: While the park remains open with great spots to relax (and watch cruise ships), the jetty has been closed since Hurricane Irma struck in September of 2017.  The park is operated by the State of Florida, but the jetty is actually owned by the federal government and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers.  The primary job of the jetty is to act as a breakwater, and calm the seas at the entrance to the port.  Despite damages sustained during Hurricane Irma, the jetty still does it's job quite well, so the resources required to make it safe for visitors to walk on and fish from aren't expected to be prioritized any time soon.

Why This Park (aka 'The Jetty Side')

If you're looking to watch cruise ships leaving South Florida you do have a few options.  South Point Park is a great place to watch ships leaving PortMiami , but getting through South Beach can be a bit of a pain and if you're enjoying your time in South Florida, heading there just for the ships is going to take a lot of your time.   RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com  has a great article about watching ships from Ft Lauderdale beach, which is indeed a spot I visit on occasion - it's really beautiful.  This beach is on the north side of the waterway from the park we frequent, but there are only a couple parking spots (so arrive early and be patient) and you'll have to walk a couple thousand feet in the sand to get to the rocks where you can see the ships (a pain for many, but completely inaccessible for those with mobility issues).  Oh, and there are no restrooms nearby.  For those reasons, I generally prefer the jetty.

Where Is Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park?

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (formerly known as John U. Lloyd State Park) is located in Dania Beach, FL, just feet from Port Everglades.

Map of Dr Von D Mizell - Eula Johnson State Park

The park is roughly two miles long and occupies the northern end the narrow barrier island of Dania Beach.  Park guests enter via the only land entrance at the south end of the park on Ocean Drive and Dania Beach Blvd.  If you're south of Port Everglades and heading north on Ocean Drive it's nearly impossible to miss.  If you put the below address in your phone/GPS it will direct you to the center of the park, but you'll need to pay for entrance (where you can also get maps and park info) before reaching that exact address.

Where To Watch The Ships (Getting To The Jetty)

Sign showing the turn into the jetty pavilion

The sign for the jetty pavilion, along with the parking area, will be on your right, but to your left is a lot for the research facility, which is designated overflow parking for the jetty pavilion.  Some days there is ample parking, other days you'll need to head to the overflow lot (which only adds an extra 100 feet or so to your trip).

Once you arrive, you'll find a grey boardwalk.  Head down that boardwalk and you'll find restrooms, a water fountain, and beach showers.  As you continue walking, there will be access to several beach areas which will provide some views of ships leaving, but the views from the jetty will be much better.  As you continue down the boardwalk you'll see the jetty come in to view.  Pick any spot - there are no bad views here.  Know however that if you chose to go all the way to the end of the jetty you're far more likely to get splashed by seawater, so be sure to protect your phones, cameras, etc.

Know The History

  • The park was once home to one of the few beaches in South Florida which people of color were permitted to use, but contrary to the  state's promises, no access road was built to make the beach accessible to most who wanted to visit.  Dr. Von D. Mizell, founding president of the Broward NAACP and Eula Johnson, a former NAACP chapter president staged a "wade-in" at the beach on July 4, 1961 as others demonstrated on white beaches in South Florida for months to come.  Their efforts lead to the integration of beaches, schools, and other important civil rights changes in the state.  In July of 2016 the park was renamed after these great citizens.

Please take 5 minutes to visit the  Florida Park Service website  for the full story on the historical significance of this park.  We freely visit so that we can watch luxury ships we're lucky enough to sail on, while only a short time ago people had to fight hard to simply get to enjoy the one beach they were restricted to based on the color of their skin.

Other Important Things to Know

  • It costs $6 to enter the park with a car occupied by 2-8 people.  I find this very fair, and don't mind supporting the great Florida Parks Service so they can preserve land, care for wildlife, etc - much better than paying a private parking company $10 elsewhere in South Florida.
  • Consumption of alcohol is not permitted at the jetty or the jetty pavilion.  Some parts of the park do allow alcohol consumption.  Ask a park ranger for clarification.
  • One place you can drink is at the Whisky Creek area of the park where you'll find beautiful beaches (nicer than by the jetty) and a restaurant with decent and inexpensive beer and food.
  • The park is open from sunrise to sunset, which means in the winter, you may not be able to see ships that leave after about 5:15pm.
  • The boardwalk and paths to get to the jetty are well maintained, wide, wheelchair friendly, and easily accessible to those with mobility issues.
  • When you enter the park ask the rangers any questions you have.  They, along with the Florida Wildlife Commission (State Law-Enforcement Officers) are all very knowledgeable and pleasant, and the rangers have maps and other literature available upon request.
  • Fishing is permitted on the jetty, though you must abide by the  license requirements  in the state.  There are signs in the area with a number to call in the event you accidently hook a bird or other wildlife.  Please do not cut lines, the rangers will be glad to help and are there to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals and guests alike.
  • The tower, antennas, and other equipment you'll see next to the jetty are part of a research facility run by NOAA, the US Navy, and Nova Southeastern University.
  • Aside from restrooms and the restaurant/bar area, there isn't much shade.  So  bring sunscreen .

Complete Guide to Cruising from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

When it comes to departure points for a cruise, it’s hard to beat Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

watch cruise ships leave fort lauderdale

With nearly 4 million cruise passengers each year, Port Everglades comes as one of the busiest ports in Florida (along with Miami and Port Canaveral ), which also means its one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.

Spread out a bit more than the Port of Miami, it can be a bit confusing to navigate the port if you’re a first-timer or if you simply haven’t sailed from there in a while. Not to worry, our guide below will give you all the details you need to know to sail from the South Florida port.

  • Distance from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport: 3 miles | 10 minutes
  • Distance from Miami Airport: 30 miles | 35-55 minutes
  • Number of Cruise Terminals: 8
  • Passengers Carried Each Year: ~3.7 million

Port Everglades Location

When it comes to convenience, it’s hard to beat the location of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Sitting right at the edge of the Atlantic, ships can leave from the port and be in the open water in a matter of minutes.

Meanwhile, the port is also extremely close to the Fort Lauderdale airport. The airport is just three miles away, or about 10 minutes. In other words you can fly in and be at your ship within an hour — even accounting for getting off the plane and getting to your ride.

Location of Port Everglades

If you are driving to the port, the address is:

1850 Eller Drive Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316

Of course, while many people fly in and head directly to the cruise port, the entire South Florida region is a tourist destination. Therefore, you may be coming to the port from somewhere other than the airport. In that case, here’s the distance and mileage from several points of interest in the area:

  • Fort Lauderdale Airport: 3 miles | 10 minutes
  • Miami Airport: 30 miles | 35-55 minutes
  • South Beach: 30 miles | 40-60 minutes
  • Las Olas: 4.5 miles | 15 minutes
  • Seminole Hard Rock Casino: 8 miles | 15-20 minutes
  • Hollywood: 7 miles | 20 minutes
  • Boca Raton: 25 miles | 30 minutes

Port Everglades Cruise Terminals

The cruise terminals at Port Everglades are spread out compared to many other ports like Miami. There are two distinct regions — Northport and Midport. Northport is comprised of Terminals 2, & 4. Midport consists of Terminals 18, 19, 21, 25, 26, & 29. Given the higher number of terminals, most people cruise from Midport facilities.

Terminal 2 Renovated a few years ago, Terminal 2 is home to Princess Cruises. One of the unique features of the terminal is that it’s setup for Princess’ Ocean Medallion service, which is a wearable device that can replace your room keycard. The terminal offers 85,000 square feet of space, including about 21,000 square feet for passenger waiting, so you should never feel cramped.

Terminal 4 Sailing Disney Cruise Line? Then you’ll sail from Terminal 4, the last cruise terminal in the Northport area and right next to the Convention Center. This terminal was recently redone to honor Disney and features a “Finding Nemo” motif on your way to the ship.

Terminal 18 at Port Everglades

Terminal 18 Sailing on Royal Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale? There’s a good chance you’ll sail from Terminal 18. It’s the main Royal Caribbean terminal and serves some of the largest ships in the cruise line’s fleet (Oasis-class vessels). As with all the terminals, there are parking options right nearby.

Terminal 19 Sitting on the south edge of Midport, Terminal 19 offers 1,300′ of berth and a cruise terminal that’s nearly 100,000 square feet. There’s tons of parking within walking distance. Given the location right next to Terminal 18, there’s also a good chance that one of the world’s largest cruise ships will be right next to your ship on cruise day.

Terminal 21 In the “U”-shaped cove in the port with Terminals 18 & 19, Terminal 21 is on the eastern edge of the port. Like other terminals in the port, it offers a huge amount of space, including nearly 1,500′ of berth space and 50 check-in stations to make things as quick as possible to get on the ship.

Terminal 25 There’s been a recent trend toward cruise lines building spectacular modern terminals and Terminal 25 fits the bill for Celebrity Cruises. As home to Celebrity — and the fleet’s most modern ships — Port Everglades has a sleek terminal to go along with those vessels.

Terminal 26 Toward the southern end of the port, Terminal 26 is perhaps the easiest terminal to get to. It’s right along the entrance road at the port. Parking is available at the Midport Garage (also known as the Palm Garage), right across the street from the cruise terminal.

Terminal 29 Terminal 29 is a bit out of the way from the other terminals at the southernmost end of the cruise port facilities. It’s an older terminal, but still perfect for getting on the ship. One issue is that the official port parking garage is a bit of a trek from here. You’ll want to park and then take the free shuttle to the terminal.

Hotels Near the Port

Hotel facade in sunlight

Once again, the location of Port Everglades offers a big advantage for cruise passengers. Sitting right near the airport and near A1A that runs along the beach, there are a number of hotels that are within just minutes of the port.

Even better news is that given the popularity of cruising from Fort Lauderdale, the hotels in the area cater to cruise passengers. A number of them offer up perks like cruise parking or shuttles to the cruise port.

As a rule of thumb, the hotels that are away from the beach typically have better prices and more benefits to attract cruisers. Those mega hotels right on the water usually make you pay dearly to park and often have resort fees as well. Look for hotels near the airport or those within walking distance of the port for the best deals.

Hotels near the port:

  • Crowne Plaza Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise
  • Four Points by Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton 17th Street

Hotels near the airport (usually less expensive):

  • Best Western Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port
  • SpringHill Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Ft. Lauderdale Airport/South Cruise Port

Getting to Port Everglades (Transportation)

watch cruise ships leave fort lauderdale

Given the location of the port, getting there is a breeze, especially if you are flying in. But even if you live in the area and plan on driving, you can still easily get to your ship and park at the port. We’ve covered all the ways to get to your cruise with our port transportation article . Below we have the highlights on the most popular ways to get to Port Everglades.

Driving to Port Everglades If you are already in South Florida, then you can simply drive to the port. One thing that you’ll need to keep in mind is if you are sailing from Northport (Terminals 2 or 4) or from Midport (Terminals 18-29). Depending on your cruise terminal, you want to use a different entrance to get into the port so that you can get to your ship faster.

The good news is that parking at any cruise terminal in Port Everglades is convenient and easy. Each terminal has a nearby parking area, typically a garage (Palm or Heron). It costs $20 per day to park at Port Everglades.

Uber/Lyft Flying into Fort Lauderdale or Miami? Or maybe you just don’t want to deal with driving? Uber and Lyft are convenient options to the port. They offer service in both Miami or Fort Lauderdale (including airports), so no matter where you are, you can get a ride. We’ve estimated the cost of a ride from certain points of interest below. Keep in mind that these rates are for the entire car, not per person.

  • Fort Lauderdale Airport: $15-20
  • Miami Airport: $50-60
  • South Beach: $40-50
  • Las Olas: $15-20
  • Seminole Hard Rock Casino: $15-20
  • Hollywood: $15-20
  • Boca Raton: $35-40

Taxi Are you more “old school”? Cabs are abundant all throughout South Florida to get you to Port Everglades. In general the estimated fares are higher than you’ll find with Uber and Lyft. Still, some people prefer to take a cab to the port. Here are the estimated fares from points around the area.

  • Miami Airport: $70-80
  • South Beach: $70-80
  • Seminole Hard Rock Casino: $25-30
  • Hollywood: $20-25
  • Boca Raton: $60-70

Hotel Shuttles If you plan to stay in a hotel the night before your cruise, then look for a hotel that offers a shuttle to the cruise port. It’s an extra perk that’s great to have on cruise day. While some hotels offer rides for free, usually you will pay a nominal fee for the service. Even with a charge, it’s an affordable way to the port. See our full list of Port Everglades hotels with cruise shuttles .

Parking For Your Cruise

If you’re driving into Fort Lauderdale to cruise, then you’re going to need a spot to park your car. Fortunately there’s an entire industry surrounding cruise parking in Fort Lauderdale. We have all your options on our Port Everglades cruise parking page here . Below, we have general information regarding your parking options.

Fort Lauderdale parking garage

Parking at the Port By far the easiest and most convenient spot to park is at the port. Port Everglades has multiple parking facilities near the cruise terminals, giving you the ability to park right at your cruise ship. That means you can drive and arrive when you want, and then head home the second you get off the ship. Given the number of parking spots at the port, you don’t have to reserve a spot ahead of time. Simply show up on cruise day and park.

Parking at the port runs $20 per day for most vehicles. Have an oversized vehicle that doesn’t fit in a normal parking space? In that case, you’ll pay $25 per day. Parking at Port Everglades is comparable to other ports, though the costs can still add up.

If you are a disabled cruise passenger, then you might be able to park for free at the port. Florida laws allow for free parking if you meet requirements such as having a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, car modifications such as hand or foot controls, ramps, and lifts, and/or a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. If you think you might meet one of these requirements, contact the port at 954-468-3680 to learn how to park for free. It’s a great way to save some cash.

Independent Parking Lots As is the case in most port cities, there are independent lots near the cruise port. While these lots aren’t as convenient as parking right at the ship, they have the advantage of being cheaper. Plus, the lots will have shuttles to take you right to the ship. So if you don’t need to park right at the ship and don’t mind an extra 10 minutes to get to the ship, you can save significantly. Rates for independent lots run around $8 to $12 per day.

You can see a complete list of parking lots near the cruise port here .

Hotels with Cruise Parking As we mentioned earlier, there is no shortage of hotels in the area offering perks to cruise passengers. Hotels range from those that are literally walking distance to the port to the popular “Marina Mile” (which is a straight shot to the terminals) to spots around the airport. No matter where you want to stay and how much you want to spend, you’ll find a hotel that caters to cruise passengers by offering cruise parking.

Sometimes this parking is included with a one night’s stay, other times you will need to book a parking package. Still other hotels charge a few bucks a day to park, but at a discount to parking at the port. For full details and a list of hotels, see our Fort Lauderdale hotels with cruise parking page .

Dropping Off/Picking Up Passengers

If you’re a cruise passenger, it doesn’t get any easier than letting someone else worry about the driving and simply being dropped off or picked up after your cruise.

Unlike some other ports, Port Everglades has security checkpoints where those 18 years or older need to show identification/passenger ticket to get into the terminal area . Just be ready as you approach the checkpoint at the entrance to the port to make the line go faster.

Once inside the port, you’ll want to follow the signage to the appropriate cruise terminal for the ship. Keep in mind that there are a number of twists and turns in order to get around with so many terminals in a relatively small space. Meanwhile, if there are lots of ships in port, navigating can be stressful. It might be helpful to have one person navigate so the driver can focus on the road.

As you approach the port, you’ll see the signs for the passenger drop-off and pick-up areas. Pull up to the appropriate spot and you’ll be able to unload and load passengers.

Security/Check In

Check in signage

Before you can get onto the ship, you have to check in and pass through security. The good news is that it’s no big deal and in most cases can be done in 15 minutes or less.

When to Arrive These days most cruise lines have switched over to having staggered check in. This type of check-in gives you a 30-minute assigned window on when to arrive. While the ship might board from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., you might be asked to arrive between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Staggered check-in reduces crowds right at the start time of boarding, making the whole process smoother.

If you are assigned a check-in time, then you should aim to arrive at that time. Don’t arrive early.

The second method is the classic boarding window, though it seems fewer ships use this method now. The ship will board between hours such as 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Passengers can arrive at any time in this window.

If this is how your ship boards, we suggest actually arriving later in the boarding window. There is often a rush of passengers right at the start of boarding — and the ship may not be ready to accept passengers. In other words, if you don’t want the possibility of having to wait around to board, then arrive later in the window.

Security Cruise security is somewhat similar to that of an airport, but much less stressful. As you arrive, you’ll show your ID and boarding documents to make sure you are supposed to be on the ship. Then, you’ll put your bag through an x-ray machine as you walk through a metal detector. There’s no need to remove things like liquids from your luggage, nor do you need to remove shoes, belts, or laptops.

From there, you’ll head to check-in.

Checking In Most cruise lines have moved to allow passengers to check in online ahead of time. If you choose to do this, you’ll board with your boarding documents but be able to skip the traditional check-in lines. Your cabin keycard will be in a sealed envelope at your cabin door.

If you check-in the traditional way (or have some loose ends to tie up before boarding), you’ll stand in line and wait for an open check-in agent. Many terminals at Port Everglades have dozens of check-in stations, so the line moves quickly. Here you will assign a payment method for your onboard account, get your room key, and then board the ship. Your time with an agent will only take a few minutes, and then you’ll be ready to start your cruise.

Disembarkation

One of oddest things you’ll notice on your cruise is that everyone can’t wait to board the ship when you depart, but are just as eager to get off the ship when it gets back home.

When you debark, you can have the option of setting large bags outside the cabin the night before. The crew will pick them up and deliver the bags to the terminal for you. In this case you’ll need to wait until your debarkation group is told it’s time to get off the ship.

Instead, many people choose to carry all of their bags with them. The advantage is that this “self debarkation” group is the first group allowed off the ship. But since so many people choose the option, it can still be some time before you get off the vessel.

Once off the ship, you will be steered to the arrival hall where you will pick up your luggage (if you have it) and then head through customs to be admitted back into the United States. Port Everglades has both Global Entry and the Mobile Passport app , which can help you get through the lines more quickly.

Once through the CBP checkpoint, you’ll exit the terminal and find your transportation back to your hotel, airport, or home.

Things to Do Near the Port

As we mentioned, South Florida and Fort Lauderdale are known for their tourism. That means there’s quite a lot to do within a short drive of the cruise terminals. Here is just a sample of things going on in the area…

Seminole Hard Rock in Fort Lauderdale

Seminole Hard Rock Casino Gambling on a cruise ship is always a popular pastime, but you don’t have to wait until you get to the ship in order to try your luck. The Seminole Hard Rock Casino is about 20 minutes from Port Everglades and is the largest and nicest casino in the area. Try your hand at any number of games in the massive gaming area. Also, there’s no missing the casino. They’ve recently built a massive guitar-shaped hotel as an addition that can be seen for miles around.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Las Olas Beach Fort Lauderdale’s beaches are some of the nicest in the world, and the heart of the beach is Las Olas. Just north of the port, it’s a large, wide white-sand beach with lots of facilities and lined with restaurants and shops. Even if you don’t go to the beach, it’s a good idea to at least take a stroll on the waterfront to get a feel for what Fort Lauderdale has to offer.

Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi This area is unique due to the number of canals and waterways that run inland. In fact, there are so many that water taxis run circuits around Fort Lauderdale . It’s more than just a unique way to get around the city. For $40 a person, you can hop on and hop off as you please as you get a chance to see huge houses, even larger yachts, and learn about the area. It’s a great way to get a tour of the city in a memorable way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Time Should I Schedule My Flight Home? Fort Lauderdale has a big advantage over many other cruise ports in that it’s literally just a few minutes from the airport. If you are flying from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, you can get from the cruise port to the airport in 10 minutes. If you are flying from Miami, however, expect the ride to take at least 45 minutes, and upwards of an hour in heavy traffic.

Cruise ships arrive back to port early in the morning (6-7 a.m.) and debarking can take 2-3 hours from then. That gets you off the ship anywhere from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in most cases. For that reason, we’d suggest the earliest to schedule your flight is 11 a.m. if flying from Fort Lauderdale. Flying out at noon gives you even more breathing room. We will say that we’ve caught flights considerably earlier, however.

If departing Miami, then we’d suggest noon at the very earliest. Flying out after 1 p.m. would be ideal to give you enough time to get off the ship, get to the airport, and get through security.

What Ships Will Be in Port of Cruise Day? It’s always neat to see the other ships in port. Curious what other liners you will see when you sail away or get back? Check out Crew-Center.com . They have schedules for all the ports and you can see what mega ships you’ll see while docked in Fort Lauderdale.

Are Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale the Same Thing? While we’ve used Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale interchangeably, they are not actually one in the same. Fort Lauderdale is the city where Port Everglades is located. Meanwhile, the port itself is named Port Everglades. Don’t worry, many people use the names to mean the same thing.

I would love to watch Oasis leave Port Everglades when I go down there this fall. We will be leaving on Allure the next day and want to get both view points of the ships. Does anyone know if it is possible to walk to the rock wall on the north side of the channel if you are not staying at the hotels there? Is there a public park we could park at and then walk down? Any advice would be great!

' class=

Either side would be great! Is there a concern in November that the park would close before the ships leave? I see that they list park closing at sundown. Thanks for all the info!

If you don't want to walk at all you can park at St. Sebastians which is located directly next to the canal leaving the port.

You can view a map for the location here. http://www.stsebastianfl.org/CatholicChurch.asp?op=Contact

Cool Cruiser

We will be in Ft Lauderdale on a Saturday and would love to go somewhere to watch the ships leave that evening. What is your opinion of the best place to go?

You can go over by Points Of America Condo 2100 S Ocean Ln, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 on Fort Lauderdale Beach....there is public beach access there to the Beach right by the condo entrance and walk over to the jetty...great spot.

DCT61

POINTS OF AMERICA. There is public metered street parking in the area...or park at Lago Mar, cut thru the hotel and walk down the beach. So close you can practically touch the ships.

Closest to the hotels on 17th Street is the viewing area at top of the bridge on the south side. You have a direct view at all the ships in Port Everglades as the boat parade sails out of port.

You can park in pay to park spots on S.Ocean Drive. There is a walkway to the beach there, short walk to the huge rock pile where the ships pass.

Celebrity Beyond

Launched in April 2022, Celebrity Beyond is the third ship in the cruise line's Edge Series, capable of holding up to 3,260 passengers and 1,400 crew members. On board, guests have their pick of 32 food and beverage venues serving everything from Greek to French to Italian cuisine; there are also several cocktail bars and lounges where guests can grab a drink.

One of the highlights of Celebrity Beyond is its 4,500-piece art collection, which includes works by travel photographers and international artists. There is also no shortage of unique entertainment options; these range from acrobatic shows to juggling mixologist performances. To enjoy stunning water views, enjoy Celebrity's "Magic Carpet," a large platform that hangs off the edge of the ship and moves from deck to deck.

Staterooms offer amenities like plush bathrobes, comfortable Cashmere mattresses and flat-screen TVs; many also come with private verandas. For a one-of-a-kind experience, splurge on a room in The Retreat. This resort-within-a-resort features villas and suites with added luxuries like plunge pools, hot tubs and butlers. Plus, guests of The Retreat have exclusive access to a private sundeck, restaurant and lounge, along with an onboard credit that can be used however you see fit.

Celebrity Beyond sails to a variety of popular Mediterranean and Caribbean destinations, including the French Riviera, Italy, Mexico and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Celebrity Beyond, if you're lucky, your drink might be poured by Captain Kate McCue herself during the nightly flair bartender show at the Grand Plaza Martini Bar. Make sure to follow her behind-the-scenes adventures on Instagram. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Disney Magic

The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic is the oldest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet (it first launched in 1998). It was last refurbished in May 2023, when it received updates like a "Soul"-themed lounge, concierge-level upgrades and a new "Encanto" live show. The ship also features family favorites such as the AquaDuck waterslide, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique dress-up shop and Edge, an interactive game center for tweens.

Disney Magic features diverse entertainment, including live shows, an open-air Wide World of Sports deck, three pools and a splash area for children younger than 3. Unique to the Magic is the teens-only Chill Spa. When it comes to dining, the ship offers eight eateries, including an adults-only specialty restaurant and buffet options. Recent cruisers gave the food quality mixed reviews.

In terms of lodging, 70% of cabins offer ocean views or verandas. All cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Suites include extra perks such as concierge service and media libraries. Past cruisers noted that the service on this ship is up to Disney's standards, but so is the price tag.

Disney Magic sails from Galveston, Texas ;  San Diego ;  Miami ; Fort Lauderdale, Florida ;  New Orleans ; and  San Juan, Puerto Rico . It visits destinations across the Bahamas , the Caribbean, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Once per sailing, guests are invited to watch Tangled: The Musical in the Walt Disney Theater. This Broadway-style show retells the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider with three new original songs, puppets, and beautiful costumes. This show is very popular, so it's best to get to the theater about an hour before the show starts to get a good seat. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime. – Megan duBois, Contributor

Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

For heart-pounding fun, travelers will find a surf simulator, an indoor ice skating rink, two 40-foot rock walls, a zip line and a 10-story slide. Meanwhile, relaxation seekers can unwind in the spa, sip cocktails made by robotic bartenders or stroll through the Central Park -inspired neighborhood.

Disney Dream

Highlights include the 765-foot AquaDuck water coaster, a virtual sports simulator (for an extra fee) and theatrical performances that bring Disney animated favorites – like "Beauty and the Beast" – to life.

While the ship emphasizes family-focused entertainment with five specialized kids clubs, parents can enjoy the adults-only Quiet Cove pool and the Senses Spa & Salon. At night, a section of the ship called The District transforms into an adult oasis with host of bars and lounges. U.S. News Insider Tip : Don't skip dinner at Animator's Palate and its Undersea Magic dinner show. During the meal, you'll be immersed in the world of Finding Nemo, as Crush the turtle from the movie swims by virtually to chat with families between courses. (This dinner show is also available on the Disney Fantasy ). – Megan duBois, Contributor

Celebrity Silhouette

5 Favorite Cruise Sail Away Spots

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • April 27, 2015

Who doesn’t love a good sail away? It’s pretty cool watching cruise ships leave on the web cams , but even better in person. Living in Florida we sometimes take cruise ship sail-aways for granted.

Since we can’t always be on the ship, here’s a list of some of the best places to watch sail-aways in Florida.

1. Miami Beach

South Pointe Park

  • South Pointe Park

Located on the North side of the harbor, this is a great place to watch cruise ships leave because South Pointe Park has a pier at the mouth of the river. It’s like you can almost touch the ships leave.

You can grab a drink from the outside bar at Smith & Wollensky’s and have the perfect land-side sail away party. There is an hourly metered fee for parking here but the views are stunning.

Tip: Arrive early because you do have to pay an hourly rate for parking and parking can get bad in South Beach.

2. Fort Lauderdale

1383683_10151956873165513_704524010_n

  • Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park
  • Admission $6 per car

This state park in Dania Beach is located on the south side of the harbor and has great view points watching the ships parade out of the harbor and into the Atlantic Ocean. The winter months are the best to ship watch in Port Everglades because there are sometimes a dozen ships leaving. The park has a long pier, pavilions and bathroom facilities.

Tip: This place can get crowded so I’d suggest getting there an hour before sail away to claim your spot.

  • Fort De Soto State Park
  • Admission $5 per car

The admission price is well worth the money. You can spend all day at Fort De Soto and then come afternoon line up to watch the ships leave Tampa Bay and head into the Gulf of Mexico.

Tip: The actual fort isn’t anything spectacular but if you have some time to kill you can do a self-guided tour.

4. Jacksonville

1743658_10153220892350513_5417661310310782104_n

  • Mayport Boat Ramp

The best place is the boat ramp located at fishing village of Mayport, Florida on the south bank of the river. It’s located about a mile up from the mouth of the St. Johns River off State Road A1A and offers cool views of Carnival Fascination leaving. There are four floating docks at the boat ramp so you can pick your spot. The boat ramp has bathroom facilities.

Consider parking your car and taking the Mayport Ferry across the river when the ship is coming to get some great point of view shots.

Tip: As you enter Mayport, there’s a public beach on your left. You can watch the ship make the turn in the river and then drive down to the boat ramp to snap more photos.

5. Port Canaveral

PORT-CANAVERAL

  • Admission $16.05 per car

Jetty Park in Port Canaveral is also an excellent place to ship spot. You’ll find this park where the harbor and ocean meet. The park has a long pier and bathroom facilities. Since Disney sails out of Port Canaveral, you’ll be in ear shot when one of the Disney ships blows their magical When You Wish Upon a Star horn.

Tip: Fish Lips is a restaurant along the harbor that is perfect for ship spotting and dining.

Of course there are other places to ship spot but these are some of the best places I’ve found over the past few years. If you have a favorite spot, feel free to leave them in the comments.

What to do before or after your cruise from fort lauderdale’s port everglades.

By Janet K. Keeler

Nearly 4 million cruisers come to Port Everglades cruise port in Fort Lauderdale every year to see the world. There’s not a continent untouched by at least one of the 40 ships that homeport in Port Everglades.

Cruise itineraries range from three-day Bahamas jaunts to 100-plus-night cruises around the world. In between there is a multitude of Caribbean, European and South American itineraries plus ships that traverse the Panama Canal bound for Seattle, sojourns to Africa and expeditions to the Antarctic.

Besides the broad range of cruise itineraries out of Port Everglades, South Florida is busting with things to do for travelers who arrive a few days early or want to stay a bit after the cruise ends. Extending a cruise vacation is never a bad idea.

And what a place to do that. The 22 miles of Broward County beaches are beautiful, there are plenty of accommodations and the weather is cooperative year-round. There’s a two-mile paved promenade adjacent to the sand in Hollywood Beach for walkers, bicyclists and runners. Deerfield Beach is the spot to build sand castles and the iconic fishing pier that juts 975 feet into the Atlantic lures visitors for fishing, views and people watching. Pompano Beach is a prime snorkeling and scuba site.

If you’ve arrived at Port Everglades by car, then you can easily get to all the things-to-do places on your list. If not, car rentals (at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just four miles from Port Everglades), taxis and rideshare transportation are available.

The Fort Lauderdale Water Tax i makes 10 stops through the city along the Intracoastal Waterway. Riders can hop-on-and-off to explore, get food and drink or stay on board for the ride. It’s a convenient way to see some of the glittering hotels and high-rises. Port Everglades has eight terminals and Nos. 2 and 4 are walkable to the Convention Center Water Taxi stop (No. 4) but a taxi ride is probably in order for most cruisers. The cruise port is that big. The free Fort Lauderdale Community Shuttle is another way to get around though there is no stop at the cruise port.

Here are five more things to do before or after a cruise from Port Everglades.

an aerial view of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Make a Bet on a Good Time

Sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice and you can actually do that at Harrah’s Pompano Beach and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. Harrah’s, which is north of Everglades cruise port, has 1,200 slot machines and other digital games plus more than 40 tables for poker. Try your luck with other hopefuls playing three-card stud and Texas hold ’em, among other poker games. Need a break from the tables? Check out the fine dining at Farraddays Steakhouse or grab something more casual at Myron’s Delicatessen . Myron’s specializes in New York deli fare such as mile-high pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. Seminole Hard Rock has slots and poker tables but also offers live blackjack, craps, roulette and “ mini-baccarat .” Because it’s part of the global Hard Rock family, the Hollywood facility has a robust entertainment schedule . There is live music in bars, lounges, nightclubs plus a concert venue, which books top-name acts such as Heart, Diana Ross, Blake Shelton and Ed Sheeran. There are plenty of bars and restaurants offering sports bar fare to fine dining. Consider booking a couple of nights at the Hard Rock before or after your cruise, especially if a favorite act is on the schedule.

Enjoy Nature in the Big City

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a natural oasis amid the high-rises and busy streets of Fort Lauderdale and for that reason it gets the nickname “Central Park.” It’s nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway and a paddle along the mangrove canal will kick off your relaxation journey. Or maybe be a respite after a busy cruise itinerary. Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards can be rented from the park concessionaire , The Grove is adjacent to the A1A highway, the state’s main East Coast thoroughfare—you can often see the waves as you cruise AIA. A paddle through the canal is a good way to spy some of Florida’s showy birds and even 4-foot iguanas! The Grove also offers guided full-moon and sunset tours. Other activities include biking, fishing, camping and hiking. Want a less active visit? Pack a lunch and have a picnic, the perfect activity if you just have a few hours to spare.

1355098841_sawgrass-mills-05.jpg.1028.640.imagerendition

Retail Therapy on the Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard is the main east-east drag through Fort Lauderdale. It’s a 2.3-mile stretch that runs from high-rise condos and businesses through a pedestrian-friendly shopping-dining-entertainment district to the white sand of Fort Lauderdale Beach. If you’ve got an afternoon available and shopping is on your mind, walk the shopping district and stop in one of the many boutiques, including Lily Pulitzer, and eat at one of the many restaurants serving breakfast through dinner, many of them with pet-friendly sidewalk dining. In addition, there are art galleries and lots of clubs with tropical drinks and live entertainment. If outlet malls are your thing, the sprawling Sawgrass Mills on the edge of the actual Everglades boasts 350 stores and 16 full-service restaurants. Arrived for your cruise still in search of trendy cruise wear? You’ll find it at Sawgrass. Do some in your party want to shop and some don’t? The non-shoppers can check out the latest movies at the Regal Sawgrass IMAX 3D theater.

Wilton Manors, Rainbow Bridge

Have an Inclusive Experience

Wilton Manors is one of the most progressive cities in Florida and has welcomed and celebrated the LGBTQ community for decades. It’s often called Florida’s gay capital and there are many reasons to make the 10-mile trek north of Port Everglades. There are Pride events throughout the year and the Stonewall National Museum & Archives and the World AIDS Museum are here. Wilton Manors likes to have a good time and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and clubs along Wilton Drive to do just that. It’s just a mile long but it will feel like so much more as you browse art galleries and clothing shops. There’s tongue-in-cheek fun with some of the business names including Thai Me Up and What the Pho . Order a watermelon basil martini before tucking into the very popular Sunday brunch at Rosie’s Bar and Grill . Humming nightlife, dancing included, along Wilton Drive, too.

Browse a Bookstore for the Ages

Just three miles south of Port Everglades is a place booklovers get giddy over. William Chrisant & Sons’ Old Florida Book Shop in Dania Beach has more than 50,000 antiquarian books on shelves from floor to vaulted ceiling. The shop sells old and rare maps, plus vintage magazines. It’s one of those book shops that makes it to bibliophiles’ must-see lists. Southern Living magazine put it on its list of best Florida indie bookstores . It’s in a typical Florida shopping strip mall but feels more like something you’d find on a hidden lane in London or maybe in the pages of a Harry Potter tome. After you work up an appetite scouring the stacks and other ephemera, like vintage photographs from the Miami Beach Rod & Reel Club ($600), grab a bite to eat at the kosher Ariel’s Delicious Pizza or sample authentic Cuban fare at Juana La Cubana Cafe , both in the same strip mall.
