How far is Miami from Atlanta, and how long will the road trip take?

The shortest route from Atlanta to Miami can be done in under 11 hours, but for the full experience, our recommended routes will take you through places of interest that extend the journey to a little longer than 14 hours.

The road trip from Atlanta to Miami that follows the East Coast will take you about 815 miles and 14 hours and 20 minutes to drive nonstop. With a driving time of around seven hours a day, it will take you between two and three days to make this trip, not accounting for any detours.

How to drive from Atlanta to Miami

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Atlanta and Miami. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Eastern Route

Heading south out of Atlanta on Interstate 85, you merge onto Interstate 75 after about 4 miles. I-75 is your main road until you hit Bolingbroke and then Macon, where you continue on to Interstate 16, taking you on to Savannah.

While in Savannah, you will have the option to visit the beautiful Hilton Head Island by crossing into South Carolina and following SC-46 and then US-278.

If not making this detour, taking Interstate 95 south from Savannah will take you through Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. From there you take Beville Road to get on to Interstate 4 for Orlando.

Heading east out of Orlando takes you on to the FL-408 east highway, merging on to the FL-417 south, then the FL-528 East - taking you across the Indian River.

After the Indian River, the road becomes the Florida State Road A1A, taking you past Cape Canaveral, and south until you turn right on to FL-404 west just past Pineda Beach Park.

Turning left onto the I-95 south again just past Grand Haven, you keep on this road until your destination in sunny Miami.

The Western Route

This route can include an extended tour that goes around the southern tip of Florida instead of driving straight to Miami. Or the extended destinations (Everglades, North Key Largo) can be visited as excursions using Miami as a base.

The Western Route follows the same path as the Eastern Route except, on I-75, you turn right at Bolingbroke onto Interstate 475 South and follow the Bypass to I-75 south. You take Exit 99 for the GA-300 road south, the US-41 slip road, and then the GA-33 south.

At Sylvester, you head for GA-112 South, continuing on to GA-202 South. At Thomasville, you turn right to head towards US-319. You can keep on the US-61 for Tallahassee or turn east onto I-10 until Exit 296A and on to I-75 south again.

I-75 takes you past the University of Florida and then on to Tampa. From there, it's east again until you get back on I-75 south via the Selmon Expressway. Once past the Peace River, you take Exit 158 and head for US-41 South, taking you on to Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

Get back onto I-75 south one last time and take Exit 101 past Golden Gate for US-41, which turns east and fringes Big Cypress National Preserve, merging onto Interstate 595 and then the Florida Turnpike/I-95 south and Miami.

If you wish to make a detour to North Key Largo, following US-1 out of Miami will take you directly to the islands of Key Largo.

Alternatively, follow US-1 until you reach Homestead and keep on State Highway 9336 to visit Everglades National Park.

Best places to stop between Atlanta and Miami

On your epic road trip from Atlanta to Miami, there are many places to capture your attention; cities and swamplands, coastal towns, and beaches.

Therefore, your choice of place to stay is an important one, and here are some suggestions we think will enhance your holiday experience:

Thrills and chills at Daytona Beach

Along the Eastern Route, why not take your overnight stay in Daytona Beach, Florida - less than 8 hours from Atlanta halfway through your journey. This gorgeous city doesn't involve a huge diversion off your main route.

For a fabulous stay, we recommend Hard Rock Hotel Daytona Beach . With an oceanfront pool, waterfront stage, onsite cocktail bar, and an onsite spa, this resort will meet all your needs whether you are looking to relax by the poolside or go on party hopping.

You could happily stay in this 4-star resort without ever feeling the need to go out, but if you feel like a wander, give your toes that sand they crave, with the beach just a stone's throw away.

Known for its world-famous Daytona 500 NASCAR race, Daytona's main attraction is Daytona International Speedway. This racetrack opened in 1959 and also hosts Superbike, Motocross, and other types of races.

The Daytona Beach Main Street Pier, located nearby the resort, stretches from the boardwalk far out into the ocean and features a popular US seafood restaurant at the end.

Then there is the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Museum just a 10-minute drive away, and the Ocean Center a short walk away from the hotel. Alternatively, you can relax by the quirky pool at the hotel with a cocktail in hand!

Daytona Beach, Florida, USA beachfront skyline.

Time out in Tampa

Tampa is located a little over 4 hours from Miami on the Western Route, and this vibrant coastal city makes a great stopover with its museums and cultural life. T he Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk Hotel is one of the top places you can stay in during your visit to this amazing city .

It's been a long day, you've driven well over halfway to Miami, and you deserve a much-needed break. Well, this is the perfect spot to relax with a good book on your balcony overlooking the Hillsborough River, or at the outdoor pool.

If your adventure radar is still pinging, take a peruse around Busch Gardens. This African animal-centered theme park sits on 335 acres in Tampa. This is the second most popular SeaWorld Park, behind only SeaWorld Orlando.

Alternatively, you can take a stroll along the Tampa Riverwalk. This 2.6-mile trail along the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa is one of the city's most popular attractions, connecting parks, attractions, and hotels.

Located near the hotel is Amalie Arena if you'd like to catch a game or a show and the Florida Aquarium is a 5-minute drive away. In the morning, you can pick up where you left off feeling refreshed and energized to drive the last third of your road trip.

Where to stay when you reach Miami

Once you reach the dichotomy that is Miami, with its buzzing city, and beachy waterfront existing side by side, a stay at EAST Miami finishes your journey in style .

A super sleek, modern, luxury hotel in the heart of Miami, it has four pools, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a walk-in rain shower in the rooms. Its position lets you enjoy the stunning city views from the 40th-floor rooftop bar.

There is something for everyone in Magic City; Perez Art Museum and American Airlines Arena are located nearby the hotel if you would like to delve deeper into the cultural heart of Miami or catch a concert.

Then there's the South Beach nightlife, where the choice is mind-boggling and the entertainment truly enlivening, making a spectacular ending to your amazing adventure.

It would be easy to spend a whole week truly soaking up everything to see, but we have generated a list that will more than appease your curiosity in the two or three days you choose to travel:

Eastern Route

  • Hilton Head Island - Known for its Atlantic Ocean beaches and golf culture, this island is located in southern South Carolina, just across the Savannah River which shares a border with Georgia.
  • Savannah, Georgia - This coastal Georgia city sits right next to the border of South Carolina. It's known for its “old south” culture, with cobblestone squares and antebellum architecture.
  • Jacksonville, Florida - Located on the east coast of Florida, this is the most populous city in the state. Friendship Fountain is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, located on the Southbank Riverwalk.
  • Daytona Beach - This city on Florida's east coast has lovely beaches and a boardwalk with rides and arcade games and the Bandshell that hosts free summer concerts. Oh, did we mention the Daytona 500 NASCAR race is held here every year?
  • Blue Spring State Park - This park boasts a cool-water spring on the St. Johns River that is popular with locals. Not as well known by the tourists, you can sneak away from the beaches; let the tourists have those and enjoy some of your time relaxing here.
  • Orlando, Florida - This city in central Florida isn't only home to Walt Disney World Resort, but over a dozen theme parks as well, including Universal Studios and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
  • Cape Canaveral - Located on the east coast of Florida is NASA's Kennedy Space Center, boasting shuttle launch simulations and astronaut memorabilia. Experience Manatee Sanctuary Park, a waterfront boardwalk, and the observation deck on Exploration Tower.
  • West Palm Beach, Florida - This picturesque city is known for its wealth, as well as its beaches, with many a celebrity mansion to have a peek at.
  • Boca Raton, Florida - Known for its golf courses, parks, and beaches, this city in southeast Florida features oceanfront Red Reef Park, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and Mizner Park Amphitheater, where concerts and events are held.
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Also located on Florida's south-eastern coast, known for its beaches and boating canals. Attractions include the Strip, a promenade running along the beach, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Walt Disney, Orlando, Florida

Western Route

  • Tallahassee, Florida - The capital city of Florida features sites like the Capitol Complex with the restored Historic Capitol, the Museum of Florida History, and the 1843 Knott House Museum. The Capitol tower has a 22nd-floor observation deck with spectacular city views.
  • The University of Florida - The well-known university in Florida is known for its sports program. The bright blue and orange colors are associated with the school all over the nation. The campus itself is worth a visit on your drive through.
  • Tampa, Florida - Situated along Florida's Gulf Coast is a city known for its museums and culture. Some attractions here include Busch Gardens and the Ybor City neighborhood.
  • Fort Myers, Florida - This city in southwest Florida has more sunshine hours than any other city in Florida, even Key West. Also, there are more shell varieties on Fort Myers' beaches than anywhere else in North America.
  • Cape Coral - This Florida city known for its many canals is home to manatees. Attractions here include Sirenia Vista Park, where you can take a kayak to Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, and Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve.
  • Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens - A short drive away from the main route, Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens features wildlife experiences to inspire guests of all ages. It also houses a beautiful botanical garden.
  • Big Cypress National Preserve - This vast swamp conserves over 720,000 acres and is essential in supporting the rich marine estuaries of Florida and the neighboring Everglades National Park.
  • Everglades National Park - Home to one of the largest wetlands in the world, this park offers close-up views of alligators and crocodiles. It's also full of unique plant and animal species not currently found anywhere else on the planet.
  • North Key Largo - Popular attractions here include Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Grecian Rocks. The beaches are warm and shallow, perfect for a relaxing summer's day out.
  • Biscayne National Park - This one is a bit tricky! You can't actually drive to this national park because it's a giant wetland like the Everglades. But drive to the visitor center and take a boat from there then get up close and personal with the gators and crocs!

Best time to go on a road trip from Atlanta to Miami

The weather in this part of the US, both Eastern and Western Routes, is mild all year because it's a coastal peninsula close to the Caribbean.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Miami with the beaches being so handy and the weather so sunny. Temperatures reach around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and the rain can be frequent, but the water is warm and shelter is only an umbrella away.

Fall is normally quite muggy, with average temperatures in the low 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, this is one of the cheapest times to visit Miami as it is not the peak season, and this also means you will avoid the summer and Spring Break crowds.

In the winter Miami can get a bit chillier, but not at all the harsh temperatures you might picture in a temperate winter. Temperatures range from low 60 to mid-70 degrees Fahrenheit.

This means there's no reason Miami has to be avoided during the winter. You may not be swimming in the ocean but there's so much to enjoy that doesn't' require constant sun.

The Miami International Boat Show is one of the largest boat shows in the world and attracts over 100,000 people every February. Everyone is welcome, from boaters looking to purchase their next superyacht to everyday beachgoers looking to enjoy a nice day in the sun.

March is one of the most popular and expensive times to visit Miami as a lot of students come to party for Spring Break. If visiting during these months, expect higher accommodation rates.

If you are braving the crowds and the prices, you can enjoy the Calle Ocho Music Festival in March. This annual tradition is the largest Hispanic festival in the country and celebrates Miami's vibrant Latin and Caribbean cultures on the streets of Little Havana.

Top 5 airlines serving from miami to atlanta.

If I can, I always fly Delta. I’ve found their service to always be reliable and pleasant.

Really bad baggage handling. Had my Rimowa bag badly damaged at the latches.

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Atlanta boarding crew at gate were filled with arrogance and were disrespectful. In flight crew showed indifference to the needs of passengers. This is about the flight from ATL to BDL.

It was a good experience except when boarding a female flight attendant did not go out of her way to assist my teenage daughters in finding space for their carry-ons after their compartments were full.

From Atlanta to Cabo I would have hoped on a plane that size I would have been able to breathe and wiggle my feet a little! The leg room in that plane is non existent and I am only 5”4’. And the air vent either wasn’t working very well or just could not blow air from the ceiling to the seat area as I was suffocating through the entire flight! And please don’t say I would have been more comfortable in first class because I cannot afford those rates and have always travelled Main Cabin without issues !

I liked the piloting of the aircraft. Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. Also, although a short flight. there was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class.

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Confusing. Delay updates were out of whack At one point it said my flight was 25 hours. Three gate changes and two delays only to change back to original departure time. Gate announcer and on board flight attendant (Alejandro) making the announcements was impossible to understand due to accent and speed of speech. After beverage service the rear flight attendants sat back there on their phones. No refills no checking in, one sweep through for trash collection. Very impersonal. Bring back Coke products

Delayed departure. Delayed after landing pulling into gate. Delay due to sky bridge malfunction

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

Everything was good except for deplaning in NY. Took way too long!!

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

Was lucky to have a employee at the AA checkin counter that had compassion and understood they ordeal that we went through with our original flight being diverted, needing to stay in the aircraft and then flying to the original destination; adding hours to the trip and forcing us to miss our connection and our rebooked connection. She was able to get up on standby on the highest priority on the next flight to the closest airport we need to be at and it all worked out despite being many hours late.

They gave my seat away although it was a connecting flight with them and the flight was a bit delayed.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

My previous flight was late and did not connect properly. The gate was closed and I missed this flight.

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

One of the worst flights I have ever taken Delayed over an hour without communication from the crew; very scary Entertainment not working Crew NASTY cabin cold

May never fly American again Delay in take off WITHOUT EXPLANATION Cabin freezing Crew NASTY entertainment did not work entire flight

Plane felt so crowded and tightly packed. The chair itself was not comfortable.

Arrived 3 hours early and never made it past baggage drop

Flight kept delayed from morning to late afternoon so I had to make other arrangements

I paid for WiFi, but it (WiFi) was very very slow, will never take again! Impossible open Utube 😤😤😤

No frills, limited comfort, no food, no entertainment, but fine

You get what you pay for. At least they spend money on getting a crew with awesome customer service skills. Carousel was horrible. Waited over an hour for luggage. Mothers were there with young babies. Only one baggage handler was working the carousels. The flight could have been good had we not had this horribly long, exhausting wait twice on one trip.

Unnecessary announcements through out flight. WiFi on plane is terrible and overpriced

Cancelled my flight last minute and had to end up driving to Texas from Atlanta last minute. I’m going to miss another day of work, drive back to Atlanta , in my own car and spirit doesn’t want to refund the money. First time I tried flying anyone else but delta and I get ripped off . And I had. To pay for seats for a flight that didn’t happen. Usually you could say you get what you pay for but in this case, didn’t get anything and paid for everything never flying spirit again, or even attempting it or thinking about it.

It’s been awhile since we have flown and impressed by the changes we saw! Customer service was great. On board and before

Arrogant lady acting up at check in using fowl language and no one contacted police or security

Was not able to board the flight due to a horrible policy that I needed to be at the gate 1 hour before departure. I lost money on this and the connecting flight due to having to book on another airline. I was flying to Florida for my mother's cancer surgery in the afternoon.

FRONTIER SUCKS! The agent downstairs tricked me into booking, just to get to the gate. At the gate, they told me they couldn't help. I then called Customer Service. They and the gate attendants kept blaming each other. Neither side was willing to help the customer.

Good for the price. My only complaint is that the pilot should keep the air flowing while passengers are waiting to getting out of airplane.

I arrived 1 hour prior to boarding, and they said I was too late for a domestic flight. First time I heard that :-(

Frontier is a crappy airline nothing about it is honest

Flight was a little late taking off. Seats are too upright, no ports to charge devices, no wifi, no entertainment

Crew members are very rude and not cooperate with passengers.

30 minute delay due to boarding and settling of a family.

I am HIGHLY unhappy with the amount of money I spent on the flight. Paid in advance only to find the flight at a discount price a week or so before the flight. I will not fly frontier again and have bad mouthed your business since to anyone I have spoken with about flying (which has been many a people). Crew was mediocre and instead of moving me to a spot where I could gain some leg room they sat their flight attendant there. Won’t be flying frontier in the future.

Well, I didn’t have food! So NA wasn’t an option. I’ll be back!

First time flying with Frontier . From buying tickets ,getting boarding pass and boarding plane was super easy. Definitely would fly again with Frontier .

Heading to Miami? A local wants you to know these 10 things

Jessica Poitevien

trips to miami from atlanta

Like many South Florida residents, I came first as a tourist before my family made the leap and moved here.

But don’t lump me in with the new wave. I planted my roots in Miami back in 2009 – meaning I’ve been observing Miami’s distinct culture since well before the city’s recent trendiness. Getting to know Miami can be measured in more than years, though: my overuse of words like “bro”, “literally” and “super” – not to mention all sorts of Spanglish – marks me as a local.

If you’ve got Florida on your vacation radar (and who doesn’t?), allow me to share all the things you should know before your visit to marvelous Miami.

Visiting for the weekend? We have the itinerary for you

A group of older men play dominos in Domino Park, Little Havana, Miami, Florida, USA

1. There’s more to Miami than the beach

We don’t blame tourists for coming to Miami for our beautiful beaches – but it would be a shame if you were to only stick to the sand. Outdoorsy travelers will find plenty to keep themselves busy, with a handful of nearby state parks and even two national parks  within easy distance to explore. And in town, Miami’s sensational neighborhoods – from Downtown to Wynwood – are worth savoring.

What really makes Miami stand out? Its unique blend of international influences, especially from the Caribbean and Latin America. So don’t miss out on perusing neighborhoods like Little Havana and Little Haiti.

2. Avoid visiting during spring break

Miami is a great destination year-round – with one exception: spring-break season. In recent years, spring break has become insufferably crowded, overpriced and in some cases even dangerous. Local authorities in Miami Beach have started cracking down by imposing curfews, enacting stricter rules around alcohol sales and increasing parking fees to as much as $100. In short, during spring break, you won’t get to fully experience Miami Beach – which I’d say is a must-see spot for first-time visitors. If spring break is the only time that works for you, then I suggest avoiding hotels in Miami Beach, and especially South Beach .

3. Don’t be surprised by the summer rain

Speaking of seasons, I’d be failing as your guide if I didn’t mention the rainy season. One summer, I met a Miami transplant who had recently moved from Ohio . He expressed his disappointment that it rained almost every day. I told him to count on rain every day from 2pm to 4pm during the summer – and plan accordingly. As we sat in that co-working cafe, it rained during that exact time frame, and I felt like a weather-controlling sorcerer.

Bottom line: South Florida is a tropical destination, so afternoon showers are the summertime norm. Don’t worry, though. Once the (sometimes apocalyptic) rain stops, things turn immediately bright and sunny again.

4. Public transportation is limited…

Greater Miami sprawls across thousands of square miles. And since the city was developed around cars, you can expect points of interest to be spread out, with little to no public transportation to get you there . Miami International Airport, luckily, is directly connected to Downtown via the recently expanded Tri-Rail train service.

Within Downtown Miami and its surrounding areas, you’ll find the Metrorail , as well as the free Metromover , a small train system whose lines circle and extend slightly north and south of the city’s core. Those are fairly reliable, but limited: the moment you want to go a little bit west or east to the beach, things get complicated. You can take the bus; some neighborhoods also offer low-cost trolleys or even free shuttles via the Freebee app . But it’s the connectivity between different areas that’s tricky – and above all, really time-consuming.

5. …but drive at your own risk

So since public transportation isn’t great, you should rent your own car, right? Let me pump the brakes on that idea. Unless you’re moving around a lot in a day or venturing to farther places like the Everglades , you’re probably better off using a rideshare app. Not only because hiring a ride is more cost-effective, but also because Miami drivers are aggressive . Driving well over the speed limit is expected, and using a turn signal is like divulging your war plan to the enemy. (Seriously, I once had someone purposely block me from switching out of a lane that was closing.) If you’re not used to Grand Theft Auto –style driving, then leave it to the locals, who wouldn’t flinch at anything I just described.

If you’re thinking, “Fine! I’ll just walk!”: please don’t do that either. A stroll within one neighborhood is fine, but if you set out on foot from one area to the next, you might find yourself on the side of a highway, or in some not-so-great neighborhoods.

Navigate Miami like a local with these tips for getting around

6. Spanglish is Miami’s unofficial language

Miami is known as the “capital of Latin America” – and with good reason. More than half of the residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and Spanish is spoken everywhere. In fact, you might come across a situation – say, at a restaurant or with a rideshare driver – where your service provider doesn’t speak English at all. Don’t fret. With the power of a translation app or good-old pointing and charades, you’ll get through. Or someone will step in to translate. We’re used to these scenarios here.

7. Review your restaurant bill carefully

Miami attracts visitors from all around the world, and with different cultures come differing expectations about tipping. To make sure waiters aren’t missing out on essential income, many restaurants in the most touristy areas of Miami (think South Beach and Downtown) will often automatically add 18–20% gratuity to your bill. If you’d like to add an extra tip on top of that, it will certainly be well received, but it’s not expected or necessary. So look over your restaurant bill carefully, keeping in mind that sometimes this automatic gratuity is listed as a “service charge.”

While on the topic of restaurants: don’t ever order something that doesn’t have a price on the menu, especially those big, fancy drinks in South Beach. You might get lured in by “happy hour” – only to find out that the one drink in that two-for-one special costs $50.

8. That tiny coffee is stronger than you think

One of the best parts of visiting Miami is tasting food from around the world, especially Latin America. I encourage you to try new dishes you’ve never heard of. You especially can’t leave without having a Cuban meal – or at least a favorite Cuban snack: pastelitos (pastries usually filled with guava and/or cheese) y cafécito . Cuban coffee is a big deal served in a little cup – but don’t get greedy. That tiny coffee packs a huge caffeinated punch. Drink wisely. As in, two cups max.

These are the best spots to sip Cuban coffee in Miami

9. Mind the dress code if you want to get into the club

Miami’s nightclubs and lounges typically have a strict dress code, especially in Downtown and South Beach. And if the doorman decides your outfit doesn’t make the grade, then you’re not getting in. Believe me: I’ve seen it happen.

For major nightclubs like LIV or M2 , that typically means no tank tops, sleeveless shirts, shorts, “excessive baggy clothing,” sandals, flip flops or flats. Neighborhoods like Wynwood and up-and-comer Little River tend to be more casual – but even then, there are exceptions. So check the websites of the specific places you’re interested in. And dress to impress.

10. The party gets going extra late

Who says New York is the only City That Never Sleeps? Whether it’s the Latin American influence or the fact that people are on the beach until sunset, everything runs late into the evenings in Miami, from dinner (9pm is a perfectly normal mealtime) to the actual nightlife. You can do pre-party drinks anywhere from 10pm to midnight...but count on getting to the club late . The best ones don’t really get going until after midnight. And with some places open 24 hours, don’t be surprised to see people heading home with the sunrise.

Scandinavian Airlines fares include a free carry-on. Norse Atlantic and Play Airlines allow one personal item for economy travel. A carry-on bag costs $45-$66 each way and checked baggage costs anywhere from $75 to $110 each way.

Deal basics

Airlines : Norse Atlantic Airways, Play Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines

Routes : From Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and Washington, D.C., to Berlin.

How to book : Browse Google Flights, then book directly with the airline.

Travel dates : Availability from August 2024 through February 2025; some routes include Thanksgiving.

Sample flights

Norse Atlantic has nonstop flights from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in early October for just $259 round-trip. That's about half of what this route typically sells for. Don't wait long to book this.

The same route is available in September for $282 nonstop. We also saw this route at this price for December travel.

You can also fly nonstop from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Berlin in the fall for less than $300 round-trip on Norse Atlantic. You'll notice this itinerary includes Thanksgiving. That means you can peruse Berlin's famous Christmas markets, which usually begin the last week in November.

Flights from Miami to Berlin in early 2025 are slightly more expensive, but $309 for a nonstop ticket is still a really good price for this route.

There are some solid sale fares out of Atlanta to Germany, as well. SAS has round-trip fares from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Berlin in early December for $487. That includes layovers in Copenhagen, with a 20-hour stop in the Danish capital on the return flight.

Unlike Norse Atlantic fares, SAS fares come with a free carry-on bag. According to Google Flights, this route usually costs more than a thousand dollars.

You can book fares on Play Airlines out of Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., to Berlin in early 2025 for $365 round-trip. This route has layovers each way in Iceland, and you'll have to pay extra for a carry-on bag.

If you can travel in early September, you can book round-trip fares on Norse Atlantic from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Berlin for only $432. That's a huge discount from typical prices for this route.

Lionel Messi scores goal in return to lineup, but Inter Miami falls 3-1 to Atlanta United

trips to miami from atlanta

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Lionel Messi returned to action, rested and engaged. But most of his Inter Miami teammates felt the ill-effects of the longest road trip in Major League Soccer on Wednesday night.

Messi scored in the 62nd minute, but Inter Miami fell 3-1 to Atlanta United at Chase Stadium – four days after the club won 2-1 at Vancouver without Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets.

Saba Lobjanidze scored in the 44th and 59th minutes for a brace, while Jamal Thiaré finished a sliding goal in the 73rd minute to help Atlanta win its fourth match of the MLS season and hand Inter Miami its third loss of the season.

“The truth is we were missing a gear,” Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said after the loss. “Let's say it was a night where the team went backwards compared to other matches, where we always found positive moments, even in difficult moments.”

The good news for Inter Miami: It retains first place in the MLS Eastern Conference with FC Cincinnati one point behind in the standings after Cincinnati lost 2-0 at home to Nashville.

Messi, Suárez and Busquets returned to action for the first time since May 18, given 10 days between matches to rest and recuperate — and avoid travel to and from South Florida to Vancouver last weekend.

Inter Miami plays again on Saturday night against St. Louis City, which ranks 11th out of 14 teams in the MLS Western Conference. But it’s not yet definitive Messi, the 2022 World Cup champion who will captain Argentina in Copa América next month, will play on Saturday. His status will likely be decided after Friday's practice.

Messi could use the work to maintain his form before Copa América, which could be the final major tournament he’ll play for Argentina in his legendary career. He turns 37 on June 24.

Messi appeared healthy as a lingering left leg injury, a blow he took at Montreal on May 11, did not affect him against Atlanta.

Messi nearly scored on a header in the opening minutes, but his dive toward the net ended with the ball sailing over it.

Messi, Suárez and Jordi Alba forced the issue offensively in the first half, but they were unable to find holes in Atlanta’s steadfast defense.

As the first half neared its end, Inter Miami’s fatigue from travel and nighttime humidity showed as Lobjanidze scored before halftime.

While Messi’s goal reignited Inter Miami and its home crowd, the goal by Thiaré proved to be the dagger.

Inter Miami has won just one of six matches played on a Wednesday this season, a 3-1 win over Nashville in the Concacaf Champions Cup being the lone exception.

“When a team gets defeated like we did, it’s an excuse to talk about the trip or the calendar,” Martino said.

Jamal Thiaré goal: Atlanta United 3, Inter Miami 1

Inter Miami is on the brink of defeat.

Jamal Thiaré finished a sliding goal in the 73 rd minute to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead against Inter Miami.

The play was orchestrated by Thiago Almada, and Caleb Wiley delivered the assist.

Messi scores goal to respond: Atlanta United 2, Inter Miami 1

Messi has responded to Inter Miami’s 2-0 deficit with a goal in the 62 nd minute, a strike that found the bottom right corner of the net.

The quick response in Messi’s goal has reignited the home crowd at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium.

Saba Lobjanidze scores again for brace: Atlanta 2, Inter Miami 0

It might not be Inter Miami’s night.

Saba Lobjanidze scored in the 59 th minute to give Atlanta United a 2-0 lead over Inter Miami in the second half.

Atlanta’s Thiago Almada navigated the steal from Inter Miami’s stars and Lobjanizde doubled their lead.

Messi slips, misses shot on goal: Atlanta 1, Inter Miami 0

A swing and a miss in the 55 th minute by Messi, who also slipped after his latest shot attempt in the second half.

Inter Miami’s Matias Rojas, who has scored three goals this season, has entered the match for Julian Gressel.

Saba Lobjanidze goal: Atlanta United 1, Inter Miami 0

Messi and Inter Miami are out of sorts in the first half and they fell behind just before halftime.

Atlanta United’s Saba Lobjanidze scored in the 44th minute to help his side take a 1-0 lead over Inter Miami.

Messi, Alba, Suárez try to connect again, but offsides: Inter Miami 0, Atlanta 0

Messi, Alba and Suárez performed a set piece after a corner kick, to no avail.

Alba found Messi streaking down the right side, and Messi used his head to find Suarez cutting toward the net. But the ball appeared to be deflected by Atlanta United goalie Josh Cowen in the 26th minute.

Messi drives downfield, Suárez misses shot: Inter Miami 0, Atlanta 0

Messi pursued an opportunity with a full head of steam from midfield, and dropped off a pass to his right to Julian Gressel. But Gressel veered offsides after dropping off a pass to Luis Suárez, who kicked it directly to Atlanta United goalie Josh Cowen in the 19th minute.

One minute later, Messi chipped a pass in the goal area to Robert Taylor, who was unable to handle it.

Messi misses diving header in early minutes: Inter Miami 0, Atlanta 0

Messi made a hard run toward the net, and tried to use his head to find the back of the net. But Messi’s shot bounced over the net in the fourth minute.

Messi got up after his dive with a thumbs-up for Jordi Alba, who delivered the pass into the goal area.

Messi, striker Luis Suárez and midfielder Sergio Busquets are in the starting lineup again after missing the Vancouver match last Saturday.

A new addition to the starting lineup is midfielder Federico Redondo, who returned from a knee injury to play against Vancouver. He replaces Benjamin Cremaschi, who will likely enter as a substitute.

Is Messi playing tonight?

Yes, Messi is expected to play against Atlanta , after staying home in South Florida and missing Inter Miami’s 2-1 win at Vancouver . He’s in the startling lineup.

All three are expected to play Wednesday and Saturday vs. St. Louis City.

Messi’s upcoming Inter Miami, Argentina schedule

Messi is expected to play again Saturday as Inter Miami hosts St. Louis City. Then, he’ll join Argentina for Copa América training.

Messi will participate in Argentina friendlies or Copa América warmup matches in Chicago on June 9 and the Washington D.C. area on June 14.

Then, Messi and Argentina take center stage in the Copa América opener against Canada in Atlanta on June 20.
