When investing in a quality bike like Trek, you must register your bike on their website, and if you are buying a used model, you can use the same resource for due diligence to make sure the bike you buy is legit – but where do you find the Trek serial number?

To find the serial number on your Trek bike, you need to turn it upside down and let it rest on the handlebars. The bike’s serial number is marked on the underside of the frame, close to the bottom bracket. You can check the serial number using this link to the Trek website.

Trek USA offers an online service where you can look up your Trek Bike serial number or register a new one so that in the event you want to sell yours, buy another one, or yours is stolen, the bike’s relevant information is a click away- so let’s discover more on how to lookup a Trek Bike serial number.

What Information Is Contained In A Trek Bike Serial Number?

In the old days, serial numbers were used mostly to reveal basic information about a product – mostly how many had been made of a model if there was only one.

As more models were made and released, manufacturers began to use serial numbers to provide information on the model type, year of manufacture, the material used, etc. With bike manufacturers like Trek, it became useful to have serial numbers that provided more details about the bike for themselves and the customers.

Trek serial numbers contain information that includes the year of manufacture, the plant manufacturing code, which determines at which facility the bike was made, the day of the year that the bike was made and what number the bike was in the production run on that day.

What The Trek Bike Serial Numbers Mean?

From the early 90s until current, Trek has used the prefix WTU on their serial numbers, with a three-digit number following that and then a single capital letter. Then five digits for the serial number and a final letter to end.

Let’s look at an example and decode what these numbers mean.

For a Trek serial number WTU295D85467D – the serial number would be broken down as follows:

  • After WTU, 295 is the sequential date number from the beginning of the year-so 295 means this frame was made on the 295 th day of the year.
  • The 85467 would be the bike’s serial number.
  • The letter D at the end stands for the year 2009, while the letter D after the first three numbers would be the plant where the bike was made.

Based on this configuration and data recovered from a Trek recall notice, we can deduce that the Trek serial numbers use a letter at the end to denote the year of manufacture. With the serial number above, the letter D is the year 2009, and the list below would then represent the years prior and post.

So the very first piece of information on your Trek bike you can identify is the year of it’s manufacture, and you can use this table to determine what year your Trek bike was made.

From the information available, the numbers that follow the WTU and the day number of manufacture, the next letter or group of letters are thought to indicate the manufacturing plant where the bike was made.

Trek themselves aren’t very forthcoming about their serial numbers, only what has been described above. They don’t specify whether the serial number code includes the frame size or material type information.

Vintage Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup

Trek has been in business for a long time, and many still have vintage Trek bikes dating back to the 1970s. To establish a database of serial numbers and to decode them, a survey of more than 200 Trek owners revealed how Trek serial numbers were utilised on bikes from around 1976 to before the late 1980s.

Here, the serial number configuration was LNLNLNN, where L= Letter and N=Number, so let’s look at the serial numbers and letters and what they would mean on a vintage Trek bike.

The first letter is the frame model, and the first number is the frame size. So if the serial number begins with A1, the A would represent the Frame model 210, and the one would define a 19.75″ frame.

The letter after that represents the month the frame was serialized, so A would mean January, B would be February, etc.

The second number represents the last digit of the year of serializing and is not a reference to the year model. The final three places of the serial number have letters from A through Z and numbers from 01-99.

The letters are thought to relate to the run’s designation, and the last two letters could relate to the frame number in that run. As an example, if the serial number on your Trek bike were D5F8J57, then that would tell you the following :

  • D- Frame model 510
  • 5 –  25,5″ frame size
  • F – The month of serialization would be June
  • 8 –  1978 is the year of serialization
  • J – Designating the 10 th run
  • 57 – the 57 th frame of the run

You can see the complete serial number survey with all the various models and exceptions here , so you can get some info using this reference to look up your vintage Trek bike serial number.

It seems odd that such a prolific manufacturer of arguably the world’s best bicycles offers no concrete information on the structure of its serial numbers, and while the registration and recovery service is a plus, submitting a Trek serial number on their website will give you a good idea of your bike and it’s history.

Since not every bike owner is interested in decoding their Trek serial numbers and only concerned with registering their bike in case it gets stolen or needs basic information, this could be why Trek hasn’t released detailed information on their serial numbers yet.

How Do You Read a Trek Bike Serial Number

To read a Trek bike serial number, you will need to locate the serial number on the frame of the bike. The serial number is usually located on the bottom bracket of the frame. Once you have located the serial number, you will need to identify the year of manufacture for the bike. The year of manufacture is coded into the serial number.

If you’re like most cyclists, you probably don’t think much about your bike’s serial number. But if you ever need to order replacement parts or register your bike for warranty, that number can be important. Here’s a quick guide to help you decode a Trek bike serial number. The first thing to note is that Trek uses a different system for numbering their bikes than other manufacturers. Instead of starting with the production year, they use a code that indicates the frame material and size. For example, an “18” indicates an 18-inch aluminum frame, while a “19” is a 19-inch carbon frame. After the frame size code, there’s usually a letter that denotes the month of production. The following two numbers indicate the year of production, and the last four digits are the production run number within that year. So, if you see something like “18A1234,” that means it’s an 18-inch aluminum frame from January (A) of 2018 (12), and it was the 1234th bike made that year with those specifications. Knowing how to read your Trek bike serial number can come in handy if you ever need to track down replacement parts or file a warranty claim. And now you’re one step ahead when it comes time to decode those numbers!

Trek Wtu Serial Number

Trek Wtu Serial Number The Trek Wtu is a great bike for those who are looking for an entry level mountain bike. It is perfect for someone who is just starting to get into mountain biking or someone who wants a good quality bike without spending a lot of money. The Wtu has a lightweight aluminum frame and suspension fork that make it easy to maneuver on the trails. It also has 21 speeds, making it easier to find the right gear when you are climbing hills or going downhill. The Trek Wtu also comes with front and rear disc brakes, giving you more stopping power when you need it. One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a Trek Wtu is that it does not come with pedals. You will need to purchase them separately or find a model that comes with pedals included. Overall, the Trek Wtu is a great entry level mountain bike that is perfect for those just getting started in the sport.

Trek Serial Number Year

If you’re a Trek fan, then you know that the serial number on your bike can tell you what year it was made. But did you know that there’s a specific way to decode that number? Here’s how: The first two digits of the serial number indicate the production year. For example, if your bike has a serial number of 1234, it was made in 2012. The next two digits indicate the month of production, with Jan being 01 and Dec being 12. So, if your bike has a serial number of 1234, it was made in December 2012. The last four digits are simply an individual identifier for each bike produced that month – so no two bikes will have the same serial number. So there you have it – now you can tell exactly when your beloved Trek was born!

Trek Serial Number, Frame Size

When it comes to finding the perfect bike, size does matter. But, with so many different types and brands of bikes out there, how do you know what size is right for you? And once you have your dream bike, how can you be sure that it’s the real deal? With a little bit of research, you can find the answers to both these questions and more. When it comes to sizing a bike, the most important measurement is the frame size. This is the horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket (where the pedals attach) to the top of the seat tube. The ideal frame size for a bike depends on both your height and your inseam (the distance from your crotch to the ground). There are a few different ways that manufacturers list frame sizes, but they all basically refer to this same measurement. Once you’ve found a bike that feels comfortable and has all the features you’re looking for, it’s time to check if it’s legit. One way to do this is by looking up its serial number online. Every Trek bicycle has a unique serial number that can be used to track its history. To find yours, look for a white sticker with black numbers on either the underside of the frame near where the pedals attach or on one of dropouts (the part of frame where wheels attach). Once you have this number, head over to Trek’s website and enter it into their “Serial Number Lookup” tool. This will tell you when and where your particular bike was made as well as any other pertinent information about its history. Now that you know how to read a Trek serial number and what size frame is right for you, get out there and start pedaling!

Trek Madone Serial Number Lookup

Trek is a popular bicycle brand that offers many different models of bikes. The Madone is one of their most popular road bikes. If you need to find the serial number on your Trek Madone, there are a few places you can look. The first place to check is on the frame of the bike itself. The serial number is usually located on the bottom bracket shell or on the headtube. If you can’t find it there, try looking on the inside of one of the dropouts. If you still can’t find the serial number, your last resort is to contact Trek customer service. They should be able to help you locate it based on your bike’s model and year.

Trek Mountain Bike Serial Number Lookup

If you’re like most mountain bikers, you probably don’t think much about your bike’s serial number. But if you ever need to register your bike or make a warranty claim, that number can be important. Here’s a quick guide to help you look up your Trek mountain bike’s serial number. The first place to look for your Trek mountain bike’s serial number is on the bottom of the frame, near the crankset. If there’s no serial number there, check under the bottom bracket or on the head tube. If you still can’t find it, take a look at the rear dropouts. On some models, the serial number is stamped into one of the dropouts. Once you’ve found the serial number, write it down and keep it in a safe place. That way if you ever need it, you’ll have it handy.

How Do You Decode Trek Serial Numbers?

Trek serial numbers are used to identify individual bicycles. The serial number is located on the underside of the bottom bracket. Decoding a Trek serial number can be difficult, as there is no definitive guide from Trek. However, with some basic knowledge and a little bit of research, you should be able to decode your Trek serial number and find out when your bike was made. The first step in decoding a Trek serial number is to identify the country of origin. “Made in USA” bikes will have a letter code for the month (A-L) followed by two digits for the year (09-20). For example, an “M” bike would have been made in December 2009 or 2020. If there is no letter code, then the bike was likely made in Taiwan or China. The next step is to identify the factory where the bike was made. This information can usually be found on Trek’s website under “Where We Make Our Bikes”. Once you know the factory, you can narrow down the possible production dates for your bike. If you’re still having trouble decoding your Trek serial number, there are a few other resources that might be helpful. First, try searching for your specific model on BicycleBlueBook.com – they often have detailed information about when particular models were produced. You can also try reaching out to Trek directly – their customer service team may be able to help you decode your serial number based on their records.

How Do I Tell What Year My Trek Bicycle Is?

If you’re not sure what year your Trek bicycle is, there are a few ways to find out. The most accurate way to determine the year of your Trek bike is to reference the serial number. To find the serial number on your Trek bike, look for a white or silver sticker with black lettering on either the underside of the frame near where the pedals attach, or on the back of the headtube. Once you’ve found the serial number, you can use Trek’s online tool to decode it and learn more about your bike. If you can’t find the serial number or don’t have access to a computer, another way to figure out the year of your Trek bike is by looking at certain features that changed from year to year. For example, in 1998 Trek introduced their OCLV carbon fiber frames, so if your bike has an OCLV frame it was likely made after 1998. Similarly, in 2000 Trek came out with their Fuel EX model which was one of their first full-suspension mountain bikes. So if you have a Fuel EX, it was most likely made between 2000 and 2009 whenTrek updated the model. Finally, if you know when you purchased your bike or received it as a gift, that can also be helpful in determining its age. Of course this isn’t always accurate since people often hold onto bikes for many years before passing them down or selling them, but it can give you a general idea. In short, there are a few ways that you can tell what year your Trek bicycle is. The most accurate way is by referencing the serial number using Trek’s online tool. If you can’t find the serial number or don’t have access to a computer, another way to figure out approximately when your bike was made is by looking at certain features that changed from year to year like different frame materials or models that were introduced at specific times.

Can You Tell the Year of a Bike by the Serial Number?

The answer to this question is a bit more complicated than a simple yes or no. In order to determine the year of a bike by its serial number, you need to know the manufacturer and the specific model of the bike. Each manufacturer has their own system for numbering their bikes, so there is no one standard method. However, most manufacturers include the year as part of the bike’s serial number. For example, Trek bikes have a letter code that denotes the year; “A” represents 2000, “B” represents 2001, and so on. If you can’t find any indication of the year in the serial number, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer directly and they should be able to help you out.

How Do I Look Up My Bike Serial Number?

If you’re looking to find your bike’s serial number, there are a few places you can look. The most obvious place to start is on the frame of your bike. If your bike has a straight top tube, the serial number will likely be located under the bottom bracket. If your bike has a sloped top tube, the serial number is probably located on the headtube near the stem. Another place to look for your bike’s serial number is on any stickers that may be affixed to the frame. These could be manufacturer’s stickers, dealer stickers, or even just random decorative stickers. If any of these stickers obscure theserial number, you may need to remove them in order to find it. If you still can’t find your bike’s serial number after checking these two locations, it’s possible that it was never stamped onto the frame in the first place. This isn’t terribly uncommon, especially with older bikes. In this case, you’ll likely need to consult other records in order to track down your bike’s serial number.

How To Find Model/Year Of Vintage Trek Bike By Serial Number

To conclude, in order to read a Trek bike serial number, you will need to know the model and year of the bike. The first two letters of the serial number represent the month and last two digits of the year. The next four numbers represent the production run sequence. You can use this information to help narrow down when your bike was made.

What Year is My Trek Bike and Other Information From a Serial Number

1. how to find the serial number location, 2. serial number on trek bike and understanding the format, how to read serial numbers on vintage trek bicycles, frequently asked questions.

serial-number-location

Trek bicycle serial numbers contain some helpful information, and one of these is the year a specific bike was made. If your unit has a 13-character serial, all you have to do is look at the last character. This letter will correspond with a specific year.

D stands for 2009, and R is for 2021; you can count forward or backward to identify what other letters stand for. However, the letters I and O have been skipped to avoid confusion with numbers 0 and 1.

Based on the compiled information, units produced in 2023 should have the letter T as their last character, but this is just an inference. The same goes for A, B, and C; these have yet to be included in compiled information.

On the other hand, vintage Trek serial numbers use a different system which is apparent due to being only 6 or 7 characters long. Learn more about vintage serials below.

What is a Serial Number and Why Use It?

serial-numbers-on-trek-bikes

A serial number is a series of characters made up of numbers, letters, or a combination of both that serves as a unique identifier for specific products. These are usually printed somewhere on the body of the product it marks.

Various information may be included in a serial number, including its production date and where it was produced. Some items also include product specifications such as size. However, serial numbers are often difficult to understand and need some sort of decoding knowledge to make sense of.

For bicycles, serial numbers are important to register for warranty and other services. They also serve as insurance in case of theft.

The serial number on Trek bicycles is usually found at the same spot, whether it’s a modern bike or one that is vintage.

To check serial number on bike, turn it over and look at the underside of the frame below the bracket. This location is not exclusive to Trek, and many other bicycles have their serial here as well.

Some vintage bicycles have the print in other locations, such as under the cable guide at the bottom of the shell or the seat tube’s lower end.

where-is-the-serial-number-on-a-trek-bike

For your Trek bike serial number decode it by looking at the sequence of characters, the order is important. The series is made up of 13 characters using both letters and numbers. Below is a sample serial that is not from any specific bicycle.

Ex: WTU 123 AB 4567 R

The serial begins with WTU and any modern Trek bike serial number format begins with the same three letters. The next sequence is a series of three numbers corresponding to the specific day a bicycle is produced. This means that the sample code indicates that it was built on the 123rd day of that year.

The next couple of letters is its manufacturing plant code. However, we do not know how to identify which facility is represented by these codes. All we can tell is if two bikes came from the same factory.

The second numerical sequence is believed to be the bicycle’s ID code and is probably used to differentiate an individual bike from all others. Finally, the lone letter at the end represents its year of production, as we’ve already tackled above.

trek-bicycle-serial-number-chart

Trek bikes have been made for a long time and a vintage Trek serial number works differently from modern ones. They do not begin with WTU and are much shorter. However, they are hard to decode because the format changed multiple times through the years.

Bicycles produced from 1976 to 1980 have been well-documented and this serial system is well-understood. They are made up of seven characters beginning with a letter and ending with two numbers using an LNLNLNN format where L stands for a letter and N for a number.

The first letter represents the model, the first number is its frame size, the second letter goes from A to L each representing a month, and the second number is the last digit of the year of production. The last three characters are the run designation followed by the frame number within that specified run.

Below is a chart for the first letter and the first number of serials used during the period.

Bikes produced in other years make use of other systems, but the use of the seven-character serial reached up to around 1999, although six-character serials were also used at some point.

If your vintage bike is not covered by the formats we covered here, you can check out the Trek bicycle serial number chart resource here. Unfortunately, information for specific batches is still lacking, but they also have valuable information for cross-referencing, such as the colors of the models by year.

How do I register my Trek bike?

Head to Trek’s official bike registration page; you’ll find an input field where you can type in your serial number. You can also search bike’s serial number on this page.

Type in the serial without any spaces in between to register your bicycle into Trek’s official database. Read about where the serial number is located above.

Why is it important to register?

The two main reasons to register are to receive various support from Trek and for security in case of loss or theft. While Trek does not clarify how they can help, registering helps, so you may be able to contact them for help in such situations via

Registering the bike will also help prove ownership in case the bicycle is taken into police custody. Warranty is only available for registered units, and a Trek mountain bike could use it if you frequently ride rough terrain.

As for support, you will be able to obtain valuable information via model lookup only if you are registered. They also mention that older models can still be registered.

Why does my bike not have a serial number?

Some vintage bikes do not have serial numbers at all. These were some that were produced from 1976 to the 1980s. Other early models have the number elsewhere, such as beneath the cable guide near the bracket shell.

It’s also possible that the print has worn down over time or that the frame was repainted, resulting in the serial no longer being visible.

What year is my Trek bike by serial number? Now you know where is the serial number on a Trek bike and how to read it. After reading this, make sure to register your bicycle if you haven’t already.

Are you familiar with serial numbers for other bicycle brands? Are they different in how they work and are they as useful as those from Trek’s bikes? Tell us about them in the comments section below.

Bike Serial Numbers

where to find a bike serial number

Most cyclists don’t understand the importance or use of a bike serial number until they need it!

However, knowing your bike’s serial number is essential and can drastically increase your chances of recovering your bicycle should it be stolen.

In this short article, I’ll cover what a bike serial number is, what a bike serial number does, how to find and read a serial number, and what to do if your bike does not have a serial number.

What Is a Bicycle Serial Number (Frame Number)

A bicycle serial number often referred to as a bike frame number, is a unique sequence of numbers typically between 6 and 10 digits long.

Almost every bike manufacturer stamps a unique frame number onto the bikes they produce[1].

Occasionally before the serial number, there may be a couple of letters. For example, some Specialized bike serial numbers start with “WSBC”, or many Trek serial numbers begin with “WTU”.

Every bike receives a unique code, serving as a means of identifying a single bike against those of the same model. Especially helpful for manufacturers who produce thousands of identical bicycles.

Why Are Bike Serial Numbers So Important?

Bike frame numbers are essential for many reasons.

Firstly, bicycle serial numbers are helpful if a bike is stolen or lost. If the original owner took a record of their serial number (which you should do!), and it was located down the line, they’d be able to prove ownership of the bicycle.

Additionally, cyclists can register bicycle frame numbers with online bike databases, free of charge! By logging your serial number and bike details, if your bike was stolen, you can mark it on the database as stolen.

If an unknowing buyer then searched the serial number online before purchase, they could be alerted that the bicycle is stolen property. I’ll cover this in more detail later.

Theft isn’t the only unexpected scenario where a serial number is important. For example, manufacturers that offer a warranty can pinpoint when you purchased a bike using its serial number—allowing them to confirm if the bicycle is still covered under warranty.

Expensive items such as phones, laptops, and automobiles (VIN) use serial numbers or identification numbers. This provides an extra level of security for supply chains and consumers.

Where Is the Serial Number on A Bike?

Bike serial numbers or frame numbers are usually stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket shell (see diagram).

The bottom bracket shell is the part of the bicycle that houses the bottom bracket, connecting and allowing the crank arms to rotate.

While this is the most common location for a bicycle serial number, some are found on different parts of your bike.

If you cannot locate your serial number on the bottom bracket, it should be printed on one of the following areas of your bike:

  • Bottom bracket (most common)
  • Top of crank

diagram showing where to find a bike serial number

If you have searched all of these locations and can’t seem to locate the serial number, it may be that your bike does not have a serial number.

Don’t panic!

Below I explain what to do if your bike has no serial number.

What To Do If Your Bike Doesn't Have a Serial number

If your bike does not have a visible serial number, don’t worry! Serial numbers can be rubbed off or made illegible by years of wear.

If you discover that your bike lacks a serial number, there are several steps you can take to make your bike easily identifiable.

These methods won’t reveal your old serial number, but they’ll provide an additional level of protection should your bike be stolen.

Use one of the following methods of personalization:

Bike Marking Kits

Several companies provide bicycle marking kits that allow you to mark your bike with a unique number.

BikeRegister (a partner of BikeLockWiki) provide a marking kit that chemically etches a unique combination of letter and numbers and their website URL to your bike’s frame.

Kits like this significantly increase the chances of your bike being returned to you if it was stolen.

I cover more about bicycle serial number databases below.

trek 820 serial number

Seat Tube Method

  • Write your details (full name, date of birth and mobile number) on a small piece of paper, making sure they’re easy to read.
  • Insert the paper into a watertight bag such as a Ziploc plastic bag, or if you can laminate the paper, this will also work.
  • Place the waterproof bag into a lightweight carrier bag (you’ll understand why in a second!).
  • Remove your bike’s seatpost and push the bag holding your waterproofed details down into the seat tube.
  • Re-insert your seatpost, and you’re good to go.

Obviously, this method of bike identification is non-permanent. If a thief stole your bike, they might remove the plastic bag if they discovered it. The chances are, though, they won’t.

If you were then lucky enough to come across your bike, you would have a way of proving ownership.

The plastic bag will also make sure the paper doesn’t rattle around inside the seat tube and will make removal less of a faff.

Engraving Method

This method should not be attempted by children. Before following this method remember that engraving your personal details onto your bike will decrease its resale value,

  • Using a sharp tool such as a screwdriver or a strong scalpel, etch your details into the paint on your bike’s bottom bracket or wherever is easiest for you.
  • Your full name, date of birth and mobile number will be enough.
  • The more you’re able to engrave, the better, but take care when doing so.

While the three above methods won’t replace the original serial number, they’re several easy ways to make your bike identifiable as your property.

How Do You Read a Bike Serial Number?

A bicycle frame serial number is a 6-10 digit long sequence of numbers.

The interpretation of the digits on your bike’s serial number varies based on the method of coding that each bike manufacturer uses.

Digits of a bike frame number might state the year and month the bike was made with an ID number unique to the bike.

Serial numbers will typically also specify the location where a bike was manufactured, along with its batch number.

Alternatively, some manufacturers use a completely random combination of numbers that are logged in their database. Then, when searched for, the relevant information of the bike in question is pulled up.

If you want to know what your frame number means, a serial number decoder or lookup service can give you more insight. Search the brand of bike you have followed by “serial number lookup”.

Register Your Bike Serial Number

As I’ve already covered, several online bicycle databases allow you to log your bicycle frame number, along with other details such as frame size, colour and sometimes you’re also able to upload images of your bike.

By registering your details, documented proof will exist verifying that the bike with this serial number belongs to you[3]. Keep a hard copy of your serial number as well, and keep it somewhere safe.

There are several online bike registration services available. The three best options are:

  • BikeRegister (recommended for UK Cyclists)
  • Bike Index (recommended for US Cyclists)
  • Project 529 (Another great US database)

Many police stations offer a bicycle serial number registration service to bicycle owners.

When police find a stolen bike, one of their first checks is to run its serial number through their databases to attempt to locate an owner.

Get in touch with your local police station and see if they offer a similar service.

That being said, one of the best databases to work with during this process is BikeRegister. BikeRegister is the United Kingdom’s leading and largest bike registration service to date.

With BikeRegister, bike owners can verify if a second-hand bike is stolen property and even review geographical locations where bike theft commonly occurs in the world.

How Do You Prove Ownership of a Bike? (How To Identify Your Bike)

The most effective way to prove your ownership of your bike is by maintaining a clear record of its details.

After purchasing a new bike, keep hold of the receipts and make a note of its frame number.

Next, write your name and address on a piece of paper and holding it next to the serial number, take a photo.

Finally, get a selfie of you and your bike, the more evidence you have that the bike’s yours, the better!

If your bike was then stolen and recovered, this should be more than enough to prove to authorities that you are indeed the owner.

Do Electric Bikes Have Serial Numbers?

As with any other type of bike on the marketplace, electric bikes utilise serial numbers.

Serial numbers of electric bikes are found in the same location as other types of bikes. The most common location for an e-bike serial number is the underside of the bottom bracket shell, followed by the headset, top of the crank, and seat stays.

When it comes to an electric bike’s serial number, it is essential to note that it shouldn’t be confused with a VIN (vehicle identification number).

VINs, or vehicle identification numbers, are found on cars, mopeds, motorcycles, and other modes of transport.

Generally, an electric bike, however, will only use a frame number.

Is It Legal To Track Down a Stolen Bike Yourself?

While tracking down your stolen bike by yourself is legal, I wouldn’t advise you to do so.

Even if you pinpointed the location of the missing bike, it could be dangerous to recover it without assistance.

Ask for the help of your local police department or other authorities to reclaim your stolen bike.

Working with the police or other law enforcement figures ensures that recovering the bike is done in the safest way possible.

tracking down a stolen bike

Police officers are trained, well-protected, and better equipped to handle thieves and robberies than a civilian.

It simply isn’t worth confronting a suspected thief on your own. Instead, get help from the authorities.

Bike Serial Number Search

A range of online, searchable databases are available, allowing bike owners to look up a bicycle’s serial number.

If you’re buying a second-hand bike, it’s a good idea to search the serial number on the databases below to make sure you’re not buying stolen property.

Alternatively, if you’ve already purchased a second-hand bike from a previous owner and want to confirm that the bike isn’t stolen property, you can use the bike serial number search tools below.

  • Project 529 frame number search
  • Bike Index serial number search
  • BikeRegister serial number checker

We’re a proud partner of BikeRegister,  a company that holds data on more than 1 million bikes across the United Kingdom—providing an extra level of security for registered cyclists.

Otherwise, if you live in the USA, the other two bike serial number search tools will serve you well!

Bike Serial Number FAQs

You may wonder where the frame number is on a Trek bike.

Trek bike serial numbers are found on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, just like most bikes.

A trek frame number will generally begin with “WTU”, followed by a sequence of 6-10 numbers.

Older trek bikes may have their serial number in a different location, so check the serial number locator image at the top of the article.

Specialized is one of the most popular bike brands on earth and subsequently one of the most stolen.

To find the serial number on a Specialized bike, you may need to examine a few different areas before locating the number.

Most specialized bikes have serial numbers located underneath the bottom bracket, the underside of the top tube, or the underside of the downtube.

Specialized bike serial numbers usually start with either WSBC, WUD, STT, or STE, followed by a series of 6-10 numbers.

As the name might suggest, Giant Bikes are the largest manufacturers of bikes in the world.

Giant bike serial numbers are typically located on the underside of the bottom bracket shell.

Giant bike frame numbers typically start with “GM”, followed by a series of 6-10 numbers.

If you cannot locate the serial on your Giant Bike, be sure to check the image at the top of this article for alternative locations.

Raleigh bikes are stamped with their unique serial numbers on the underside of the bottom bracket shell.

Raleigh bike frame numbers often start with “W”, “WL”, or “WP”. This is then followed by a string of numbers typically 6-10 digits long.

A bike serial number, also called a bike frame number, can be anywhere between 6 to 10 digits long.

Additionally, some serial numbers are preceded by several letters, such as Trek bikes that use a serial number often starting with “WTU” or Giant bikes that begin with “GM”.

Conclusion - Bike Serial Numbers

bike serial number decoder

If you didn’t already know where to find a bike serial number, this article should have cleared that up for you.

You’ll also now understand how to prove ownership of a bike and how to register a bike serial number.

If by any chance you still have unanswered serial number related questions, leave me a comment below, and I’ll get back to you right away.

Remember, your bike’s serial number is an essential piece of information that every cyclist should keep note of.

If you haven’t already, go ahead and register your bike serial number on one of the databases above.

Otherwise, make sure you’re using a good quality lock to secure your bike.

As always, lock it or lose it.

Ciao for now.

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Be nice if it had some sound to it, would it not?

Speaking of Avon, why is his last name used, & his 1st name rarely? Same for Blake, Roj Blake. Avon's first name is usually given as Kerr , with a double r . However, it is occasionally spelled Ker , and in Darrow's noncanonical novel Avon: A Terrible Aspect , this is explained as a short form of his full name Kerguelen , roughly meaning desolation . http://www.sdc.org/~ragan/Blakes7.html P.S. There is an island called Kerguelen island in the Indian ocean.

Avon is the man I agree. It is somewhat more customary to call a person by their 1st name than vice/versa. If a persons last name sounds better, it makes some sense. Maverick for example instead of Bret. Avon certainly sounds better than Kerr, or Kerguelen, which is a very odd choice. Kerguelen was a French explorer who discovered the island in south Indian ocean, which was apparently named most useless island in the world in 95. King Louis XV of France commissioned the French navigator, Chevalier Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec, to discover such a continent for France. Commanding two vessels of the Royal French Fleet, the Fortune and the Gros-Ventre , Kerguelen left Mauritius on January 16th, sailing through mist, fog and storms to discover the islands on February 12th, 1772. http://www.discoverfrance.net/Colonies/Kerguelen.shtml A German commerce raiding ship hid out at this island & rebuilt it's motors perhaps the only interesting tidbit regarding the island.

Yep, looks similiar enough. Figured Avon rigged a radar thing on top or something. Cally only has one name right? Sounds like a 1st name.

Description

The Moskva-5 (MOCKBA-5 in cyrillic writing) was produced by KMZ ( Krasnogorskii Mechanicheskii Zavod or Krasnogorsk Mechanical factory) in the 1950s. Earlier models of the Moskva were copies of the Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta C , but it makes more sense to call the Moskva-5 an adaptation. Unlike the Super Ikonta, its solid top plate has a built-in rangefinder and a dual-format viewfinder . The best thing about the Moskva-5 is the coupled rangefinder. A lever with rotating wedge-shaped prisms is fixed to the lens plate. Turning the lens to focus rotates the glass, thus adjusting the rangefinder: a very sophisticated device inherited from the Super Ikonta, with no mechanical linkage between the lens and the body. The two windows are 6.5 cm apart for accurate focusing. The separate viewfinder has a larger field of view, which helps composing the picture. As stated above, a sliding frame in the viewfinder selected on top of the camera can be set to 6×9 or 6×6.

The back of the camera showing the year of production (1958), two red windows for 6×6 and 6×9 numbering, the rangefinder window (left) and the separate viewfinder window (right). The symbol to the left of the serial number is the Krasnogorsk company logo.

Dual Format

Super Ikontas were made either for the 6×9 or 6×4.5 format. The Moskva-5 is a 6×6 and 6×9 camera. Since it has a fixed 105mm Industar lens, at 6×6 you have a mild tele at your disposal. To use the 6×6 size, you need to set the viewfinder to the square format. there is a lever to select the right window so you can see the numbering on the film back. The pressure plate does not need to be removed. The 6×9 red window is now blocked, so there's no room for confusion.

As a last step, the 6×6 mask has to be inserted. The camera locks right into its holes. Close the camera and you're ready to shoot.

The Moment 24c is a leaf shutter with speeds of B, 1 to 1/250s. To fire it, the film needs to be transported or the release button will be blocked, indicated by a red window on the top plate. The shutter isn't set by advancing the film; it has to be cocked at the lens by a lever. To take a picture, press the button on the left of the camera top. The button on the right is for unlocking the front plate when the camera is collapsed. Before folding the camera, you shouldn't forget to push down the lever with the polarised glass window.

Never-before-seen photos and details about the man accused of murdering four Idaho college students

By Peter Van Sant

January 7, 2023 / 11:02 PM EST / CBS News

Under a dark Idaho sky, investigators flew Bryan Kohberger to the college town of Moscow. Police delivered him to the Latah County Jail. On Jan. 5, in an orange jumpsuit, his face vacant, the 28-year-old made what will likely be his first of many appearances in this court.

Four Dead University of Idaho

He stands charged with the murder of four students from the University of Idaho: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison "Maddie" Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle. Investigators say he stabbed them to death in the home the women shared.

JUDGE: The maximum penalty for this offense, if you plead guilty or be found guilty is up to  death and imprisonment for life. Do you understand?

BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yes.

Kohberger has not yet entered a plea.

In an affidavit , investigators laid out their understanding of the grim details about the night of the killings:  They say the killer left his DNA on a "leather knife sheath" found on a bed next to Maddie Mogen. And, most hauntingly, they say a surviving roommate thought she heard crying and "saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask."

The man walked past, as she stood in "frozen shock."  She locked herself in her room.

The investigation is fast-moving. Authorities have not disclosed a motive or if he had a connection to the students, but we are learning more about just who Bryan Kohberger is.

WHO IS ACCUSED KILLER BRYAN KOHBERGER?

Just 15 days before his arrest, Bryan Kohberger and his father were driving home from Washington State University for winter break to the family's home in Pennsylvania.

OFFICER (body cam video): Hello MICHAEL KOHBERGER: How you doing? OFFICER: How ya'll doin today?

The journey interrupted by two traffic stops, almost 10 minutes apart, in Indiana for tailgating.

idaho-12.jpg

MICHAEL KOHBERGER (to officer): We're gonna be going to Pennsylvania, a couple more miles. OFFICER: Oh, OK. MICHAEL KOHBERGER: …to the Pocono Mountains. We're a little, we're slightly punchy. We've been driving for hours.

Police body cam video shows Kohberger and his father talking calmly with an officer about the trip.

OFFICER: Hours? And days? BRYAN KOHBERGER: Hours. MICHAEL KOHBERGER: Hours. Well, we've been driving for almost a day. OFFICER: Do me a favor and don't follow too close, OK?

Then they are released with a warning.

Kohberger had been at the university since August, studying to get his Ph.D. in criminology. He was also a teaching assistant in the Department of Criminal Justice. He lived in an apartment complex on campus and had an office there.

According to the newly released affidavit, Kohberger had applied for an internship with the Pullman Police Department in the fall. He wrote in his application essay that "he had interest in assisting rural law enforcement agencies with how to better collect and analyze technological data."

Benjamin Roberts took four classes with Kohberger.

Benjamin Roberts : He seemed very comfortable around other people. He was very quick to offer his opinion and thoughts. And he was always participating fairly eagerly in classroom discussions.

Bryan Kohberger

He says Kohberger appeared highly intelligent.

Peter Van Sant : Does anything else come to mind that Bryan said to you in the past that today you think might be of interest?

Benjamin Roberts : There was a comment that he made, and it was kind of a flippant guy talk thing. At one point, he just idly mentioned, you know, "I can go down to a bar or a club and pretty much have any lady I want."

Kohberger arrived at the university after earning his bachelor's in psychology and master's degree in criminal justice at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

While at DeSales, authorities say Bryan Kohberger posted this survey, approved by the university, on the website Reddit asking ex-cons about the crimes they committed. One question he asked: "Before making your move, how did you approach the victim or target?

James Gagliano : This could be a piece of circumstantial evidence.

James Gagliano is a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent and CBS News consultant.

James Gagliano: The fact that the suspect was interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in criminal justice and was especially interested in … the mental state that people who had committed murders in the past … yes, it could be interesting to note. But I know a lot of researchers that study those things, too, that would never commit a quadruple homicide.

And if Kohberger was involved in these murders, genetic genealogist CeCe Moore questions why he would be so careless as to allegedly leave his DNA at the crime scene.

CeCe Moore : People are talking about how smart he supposedly is. And I just can't see how that could be true, because any student of forensic science or criminology would have to know that it's virtually impossible not to leave your DNA behind at a very violent, intimate crime scene like this.

CeCe Moore : You know, Ted Bundy thought he was smart. But he wasn't that smart, as it turns out.

After the murders, Roberts says Kohberger appeared disheveled, tired and chattier than usual.

But nothing could prepare Roberts for what he learned o f Kohberger's arrest.

Benjamin Roberts : Looking back over the last four months, I feel like there should have been signs that I should have seen. And I didn't ... I was blindsided.

Jason LaBar : This is out of character for Bryan, these allegations.

Monroe County public defender Jason LaBar represented Kohberger before he was extradited to Idaho.

Jason LaBar : The family would want the general public to know that Bryan is a caring son and brother —that's he's responsible, that he is devoted to them.

In a statement the family said, "we care deeply for the for the four families who have lost their precious children" ... and that they "seek the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions."

Jason LaBar : He is innocent until proven otherwise.

LaBar says Kohberger came from a close-knit family. He grew up in eastern Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains. His father was as a maintenance worker and his mom worked in the school system. Bryan has two older sisters – one who works as a family therapist, and another sister who appeared in a 2011 low budget slasher film, "Two Days Back," about a group of young students viciously murdered by a serial killer. She now works as a school counselor.

Bree : My heart goes out to Bryan's family.

kohberger-skype.jpg

Kohberger's friend, Bree, says she met Bryan at a party when they attended Pleasant Valley High School. She asked "48 Hours" not to use her last name.

Bree : Bryan was really funny. He wasn't outgoing at all. But he also wasn't shy.

Bree and Bryan Kohberger

She says they bonded over their love of the outdoors.

Bree : I don't necessarily remember the conversations, but you definitely remember how someone makes you feel. … I just remember feeling OK — I was just with a friend. … Just felt natural.

Bryan Kohberger

Bree recalls Kohberger was an average student with only a few close friends. In a yearbook photo, Kohberger's caption said he aspired to be an Army Ranger.

Casey Artnz also knew Kohberger from high school . She posted this Tik Tok following Bryan's arrest.

CASEY ARNTZ TIK TOK: "I used to be friends with Bryan Kohberger" ... "I'm in actual shock right now."

Casey Arntz : He was an overweight kid. … So, he did get bullied a lot.

Bryan Kohberger in high school

But Arntz says people saw a change in Kohberger the beginning of senior year.

Casey Arntz : He lost like 100 pounds . … He was a rail. … It was after that weight loss that a lot of people noticed a huge switch in him.

Casey Arntz : My brother has since come out to say that even though they were friends, Bryan bullied him.

Casey Arntz : He had said that he would put him in like a chokeholds and stuff like that.

Bree says Kohberger started using heroin, which ended their friendship.

Bree : You just saw him becoming more self-destructive. … He really stayed secluded.

It's unclear when exactly Kohberger went into recovery, but both Bree and Casey say years after he graduated high school it appeared as if he was getting his life together. He was going to Northampton Community College and working security for Pleasant Valley School District.

Bree : He was telling me that he wanted to get sober, that he was getting sober. … And he wanted to let me know like, "I'm gonna do better. I'm gonna be better."

Bree : I'm sorry ... (emotional)

Bryan Kohberger

Casey Arntz : The last time I saw Bryan was in 2017 at one of my friend's wedding. … And I gave him a hug and I said, "You look so good. Like I'm so proud of you."

And both Bree and Casey say it appeared that Kohberger had a new focus — his studies in criminology.

Bree : He wanted to do something that impacted people in a good way.

Bree: People were not his strong suit. And think through his criminology studies, he was really trying to understand humans and to try and understand himself.

Now Bree, like many who knew him, struggles to connect the person they once knew to this unspeakable crime.

Bree : I think a lot of people who were close to him are feeling this massive amount of guilt … "Why didn't I see it? Did I miss something? … Where did it go wrong?

THE YOUNG LIVES LOST

Before it was a crime scene, it was a home to five close friends. Maybe none closer than Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.

On TikTok, the 21-year-old seniors looked like they were enjoying their final school year.

In the early morning of November 13, the two friends headed to a food truck. But their seemingly carefree existence would come to an abrupt end just hours later. Kaylee and Maddie were stabbed to death in the upstairs part of the house. A hundred miles away in northern Idaho, Kaylee's father Steve got the news.

Peter Van Sant : Steve, give us a sense of the shock of that moment.

Steve Goncalves : You just feel like you're getting crushed by a thousand pounds of weight.

idaho-kaylee-goncalves.jpg

Peter Van Sant : What do you want the world to know about your daughter, Kaylee?

Steve Goncalves : I want the world to know, they — they got robbed. Somebody stole from you.

Steve Goncalves says his daughter Kaylee would have made the world a better place. A general studies major, she was the middle child of five siblings. Goncalves says Kaylee was always up for a challenge.

Steve Goncalves : She grew up around two boys that were, you know, older than her. And uh, she didn't see any reason why she couldn't be as quick and fast and as good as those two boys were.

Peter Van Sant : What did she want to do with her life?

Steve Goncalves : Like most young people, it changed. She was gonna be a teacher. … But once she found out how long it was gonna take to pay back her student loans, she — she said, "Dad, you know, this thing that you do with computers seems to work pretty well."

idaho-maddie-kaylee.jpg

She reportedly had a job lined up in Austin but made it clear that one day she hoped to settle down somewhere near her dearest friend Maddie Mogen.  Maddie was a marketing major, and she and Kaylee had been inseparable since the sixth grade.

Steve Goncalves : I just felt like it was more of a sistership than it was a friendship ... And she was just one of our kids.

So, it perhaps did not come as a surprise when Steve revealed at a November memorial that Kaylee and Maddie died side-by-side.

STEVE GONCALVES (memorial service): They went to high school together. … They came here together. … And in the end, they died together. In the same room, in the same bed. It comforts us. It lets us know that they were with their best friends in the whole world.

It was a belief Maddie's stepfather, Scott Laramie, repeated to another packed memorial just days later.

SCOTT LARAMIE (memorial service): The two of 'em were a force to be reckoned with. They stuck together through everything.

Madison Mogen, 21,

Maddie had a boyfriend, Jake Schriger.

JAKE SCHRIGER (memorial service): She was the first person I talked to every morning and the last person I talked to before bed.

They had been together for more than a year. Schriger says Maddie had a talent for making people laugh.

JAKE SCHRIGER (memorial service): She was really funny. Her jokes really would come outta nowhere … And just be like, "Is that the — the cute little blonde girl that just said that?"

But Maddie and Kaylee weren't the only victims.  While two other roommates were in their rooms and unharmed during the attacks, on the second floor, the killer made his way to the room of Xana Kernodle.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): She was my baby sister, but she was so much wiser.

Xana's sister, Jazzmin.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): She would always tell me she wouldn't know what to do without me. And now I have to live this life without her.

Xana Kernodle

A 20-year-old junior majoring in marketing, Xana was known for being focused on her studies. So focused, she didn't make much time for dating.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): Xana never had a boyfriend before, and my dad and I wondered if she was ever gonna get one (laughs).

That was until she met Ethan Chapin.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): The way she would talk and smile about him was something I've never seen her do before.

Ethan was a 20-year-old majoring in recreation and tourism management. Jazzmin says Xana and Ethan began dating in the spring of 2022.

JAZZMIN KERNODLE (memorial service): They had something so special and everyone around them knew.

idaho-xana-kernodle-ethan-chapin.jpg

Especially anyone who followed the pair on Instagram. For Ethan's birthday, Xana posted photos of them with the caption: "Life is so much better with you in it, love you!" It would be her last Instagram post. Just two weeks later, the young couple was found stabbed to death in Xana's bedroom.

At the University of Idaho, the pain of this tragedy is felt at the root and extends hundreds of miles away to a tulip farm in Skagit Valley, Washington. It's where Ethan worked before heading to college. His boss, Andrew Miller.

Andrew Miller : So, Ethan started – it was in the spring of — of '21. … It was the best Tulip Festival.

Miller says the annual tulip festival attracts close to half-a-million visitors, and Ethan stood out in the crowd.

Andrew Miller : Well, he's a big guy wearin' a big smile, right? I think that's the part that I – that kinda struck me right away.

Ethan Chapin

Ethan – a triplet – worked there with his siblings, Maizie and Hunter, and lived in a rented house on the farm with their parents. The Chapin triplets were incredibly close says Reese Gardner.

Reese Gardner :  They were best friends. … If one did something, they all did something. … It was pretty cool to see.

Including attending the University of Idaho together.

Andrew Miller : And that was the funniest thing, it was like, of course it was a package deal. Like, all three of 'em were gonna go there.

Ariah Macagba : He was excited, I think, 'cause his siblings were going with him.

Ariah Macagba says Ethan's parents had decided to live in Idaho, too. Macagba says when she heard Ethan had been murdered, she couldn't believe it.

Ariah Macagba : I think the first thing I did was message Ethan. I was like, "Hey, you're OK, right? Like, this isn't real." (crying) And — obviously, he didn't respond.

Reese Gardner scoured the internet for information.

Reese Gardner : And I just couldn't stop reading articles and … I just wanted to know what happened, and I wanted to know why.

But in lieu of answers, Gardner turned to tulips. He had an idea: name one after Ethan.

Reese Gardner : I thought, "There's — there's no better way … to remember someone who had such a big part, a big role in those farms."

Andrew Miller : Cause Reese called me … And it was, "Hey, can this be done, and are you interested in doing it?" And I was, "Yes, and hell yes."

But creating a new tulip is a long process, so instead, Miller suggested a mix of tulips that would be a perfect tribute to Ethan: yellow and white.

Andrew Miller : Yellow, of course, because Go Vandals. University of Idaho, right? That's significant. And then white is — is an eternal color, right? And tulips come up in the spring. It is a symbol of — of hope.

Ethan's Smile tulips

With his parents' blessing, they named the mix of tulips, "Ethan's Smile."

Andrew Miller : So, this will be a nice yellow or white tulip here in about four months.

The trio planted thousands of bulbs in the state of Washington and sent a couple thousand more to the University of Idaho.

Andrew Miller : And it really is our hope that we'll be able to continue to plant and that anybody that wants to remember him will be able to have their own Ethan's — Ethan's Smile Garden. …  It's a living legacy.

Now it is up to prosecutors to get justice for these young victims .

IN SEARCH OF ANSWERS

Forty-seven days after the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle, authorities apprehended the man they believed was responsible.  We now know investigators had Bryan Kohberger in their sights early on but kept it close to the vest. So, in the early days, after the Nov. 13 murders, frustration swept over Moscow, Idaho.

James Gagliano : I think in this instance people were expecting a pretty quick arrest in this case, and it takes time.

Kaylee and Steve Goncalves

Steve Goncalves, father of 21-year-old Kaylee, was trying as best he could to deal with news no one expects.

Steve Goncalves : Most things I'm prepared for. Most things as a dad, you can— you can handle. But somethin' like that, you just can't prepare for and you can't fix it.

Steve Goncalves : And, you know, just think if you do everything right, by the book, somethin' like this couldn't happen.

Peter Van Sant : Did you have any sense who might have done something like this?

Steve Goncalves : No … I didn't think anybody in her inner circles was — was capable of interacting and — and her doing something that could even deserve something like that.

As news spread of the murders, so did shock in the college community, which had not seen a homicide since 2015.

Matt Loveless : Parents drove hundreds of miles to pick up their kids to head home and stay home for the semester.

Matt Loveless is a journalism professor at nearby Washington State University.

Matt Loveless : At this point, we don't know if they're gonna come back for — the spring semester there on campus. And that same thing happened in both our communities.

James Gagliano: And, so, when parents send their kids off to school, for something to happen like this, I think it's a parent's worst nightmare

James Gagliano : And it's a place, Moscow, Idaho, where violent crime really is not an issue.

As police started their investigation, they traced the victims' final steps. The day before the murders seemed to start ordinarily. Kaylee Goncalves posted photos with her roommates and Ethan Chapin, to her Instagram account with the caption, "One lucky girl to be surrounded by these ppl everyday." That evening, Ethan and Xana attended a party at a fraternity house on campus.  Kaylee and Madison were at a bar between 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. They were then seen at a local food vendor, the "Grub Truck."  It is believed they all returned home by about 2 a.m. on Nov. 13.

James Gagliano : So, in examining the timeline , police know that the crime took place sometime in the early morning hours. There were also two other University of Idaho students who were inside the house when the murders took place.

Idaho student murders crime scene

It was later that morning that a call was made to 911 from one of the surviving roommate's phones to report an unconscious person.  Police arrived at the house at 11:58 a.m.

James Gagliano : Police find the victims on the second and third floor of the house in bedrooms — a horrific and a very large-scale crime scene 'cause you're gonna be dealing with a number of different floors that need to be processed, the bedrooms where the crimes actually occurred, and then ingress and egress points. How did the — how did the alleged killer get inside the house? Through a front door? Through a window? Those are all things police will be looking at.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): No weapon has been located at this time. There was no sign of forced entry into the residence.

On Nov. 16, three days after the murders, the Moscow Police held their first press conference.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): We believe this was an isolated, targeted attack on our victims. We do not have a suspect at this time and that individual is still out there.

Coroner Cathy Mabbutt issued her report on Nov. 17.

Coroner Cathy Mabbutt: They were all murdered through stabbing with some kind of a, probably a larger knife…

She told police some of the four victims had defensive wounds, but none had signs of sexual assault.  Police continued to work the case, aided by the Idaho State Police and the FBI.

James Gagliano : I just believe that the Moscow Police Department probably just didn't have a lot of experience in working a homicide, especially one as heinous as this one.

After about three weeks with no arrests, and what, to the public, appeared to be no real suspects, Steve Goncalves grew more concerned that authorities weren't doing enough and that the murders would turn into a cold case. So, he says, he started working with his own team to investigate the murders.

Steve Goncalves : So, we just thought, "This is the time. Let's get it out there, and let's not let it get cold. Let's get as many resources as— as possible."

Peter Van Sant : And did you have any sense whatsoever as to what a motive … might have been for these murders?

Steve Goncalves : Pretty girls and a handsome guy. I thought, you know, that might be somethin' to do with their, you know, stalking them in the sense of that.

Meanwhile, names of possible people of interest were trickling out — including members of the community and acquaintances of the victims. But they all seemed to be part of an unfounded rumor mill, many from online sleuths.  Goncalves even had people come to him to prove they were not involved.

Steve Goncalves : We — had certain suspects take their shirts off in our kitchen to show if they had scratches. And we tried to do everything in — in our powers to make sure that if we thought somebody was ruled out, we truly — we truly felt like, you know, we — we looked at 'em.

Idaho murder victims

Law enforcement would end up receiving thousands of tips, but the investigation, by outward appearances, seemed to be stalled.  Nearly a month after the murders, on Dec. 7, police were seen packing up the victims' belongings to return to the families, who had lost so much. It was the police chief behind the wheel of the U-Haul truck. That same day, a plea was made to the public.

Police were interested in speaking with the occupant(s) of a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra with an unknown license plate, spotted near the crime scene, around the time of the killings.

AMANDA ROLEY | KREM REPORTER: Today's update is the first descriptive tip that we have received in several days. Detectives now want to speak with anyone who was inside a white Hyundai Elantra that was near this home on King Road around Nov. 13th.

Police released photos of similar makes to the vehicle they were looking for.

CHIEF JAMES FRY (to reporters): We still believe there is more information to be gathered.

James Gagliano : Pushing that out to the media. Pushing that out to people on the internet. Pushing that out so that people can look for either a potential suspect, person of interest, or a potential vehicle. That goes a long way towards running down leads.

INSIDE THE INVESTIGATION

It turns out that about two weeks before the police asked the public to be on the lookout for a white Hyundai Elantra , they had already shared that information with surrounding law enforcement. And on Nov. 29, 2022, a white Elantra was located by Washington State University Police. The car was registered to Bryan Kohberger.

CBS News learned, that in mid-December, the Hyundai Elantra was tracked for several days by the FBI, using E-ZPass monitoring, fixed wing aircraft and ground support, as it was driven by Kohberger, along with his father, from Pullman, Washington, on that cross-country trip to the family's home in Pennsylvania.

On Dec. 15, the car was stopped twice in Indiana for those driving violations, by the Indiana State Police and the Hancock Sheriff's Office.

OFFICER: So, you're coming from Washington State University? MICHAEL KOHBERGER: Yeah. BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yup OFFICER: And you're going where? MICHAEL KOHBERGER: We're gonna be going to Pennsylvania.

Both agencies said at the time of the stops, "there was no information available on a suspect for the crime in Idaho, to include identifying information or any specific information related to the license plate state or number of the white Hyundai Elantra …"

Police did not ticket Kohberger; they gave a verbal warning and the trip continued home. And then, Kohberger's holiday came to an abrupt halt .

CBS NEWS REPORT:  A suspect is under arrest for the quadruple murder of four Idaho college students.

Bryan Kohberger

On Dec. 30, 2022, police made that announcement that Bryan Kohberger was under arrest for the murders. He was arrested at his family's home in Albrightsville, Pa., at 3 a.m., with approximately 50 law enforcement officers on the scene.

MAJ. CHRISTOPHER PARIS | PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE: There were multiple windows that were broken I believe to gain access, as well as multiple doors.

Authorities believe Bryan Kohberger acted alone.

Jason LaBar : Bryan was very shocked by his arrest. … Bryan did not know why they were there, but he was aware of the case in Idaho.

Monroe County public defender Jason LaBar represented Kohberger in Pennsylvania as he was awaiting extradition to Idaho.

Jason LaBar : Bryan indicated to me that he was eager to be exonerated — that he was willing to go back to Idaho.

On Jan. 3, at a hearing in Pennsylvania, Kohberger signed his waiver of extradition. And on Jan. 4, was flown to Idaho, where he is in jail, charged with the four murders.

Four Dead University of Idaho

On Jan. 5, Kohberger appeared in court in Moscow with his new public defender to hear the charges read against him. He has yet to enter a plea.

JUDGE MEGAN MARSHALL:  The maximum penalty for this offense if you were to plead guilty or be found guilty is death or imprisonment for life. Do you understand?

BRYAN KOHBERGER: Yes.

That same day, that affidavit was released that laid out startling new details about the murder investigation. According to the affidavit, one of the surviving roommates actually saw the murderer and stood in a "frozen shock phase."  She is referred to as DM in the affidavit, and told police that earlier, she heard a female voice say, 'something to the effect of  "there's someone here." And later, a male voice say, "something to the effect of "it's ok, I'm going to help you." Later she opened her door "… after she heard crying and saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask..." She described the figure as "5'10'… with bushy eyebrows."

The affidavit states that, according to DM, the male walked toward the back sliding door and DM locked herself in her room. It was later in the morning when that call was made to 911 from one of the surviving roommate's phones, to report an unconscious person. It is unclear what occurred in the hours before police were called. It is believed the murders took place between 4 and 4:25 a.m. Police say they discovered, on the bed in Madison's room, a knife sheath with a Marine insignia.

James Gagliano : I would imagine that a — crime scene as — as grisly and ghastly as this one — that there would have been … DNA left by the perpetrator.

Idaho murders house

According to the affidavit, the knife sheath was processed and "the Idaho State Lab later located a single source of male DNA on the button snap."  They were able to link it to DNA recovered from the trash at the Pennsylvania Kohberger family home.

It is not clear, what, if any, connection Kohberger had with the victims. However, the affidavit states that by using cellular phone data, police were able to place Kohberger's cell phone near the crime scene "on at least twelve occasions before November 13, 2022. All of those occasions, except for one, occurred in the late evening and early morning hours …"

Even with these new details, many question remain. A newly issued gag order prohibits officials and others involved in the case from speaking about the murders. Also, authorities have sealed a search warrant that was carried out at Kohberger's home in Pullman, Washington.

Jim Gagliano : This is one where you don't want a mistake. You don't want something to happen during this process that's going to give the alleged suspect an opportunity to beat the case.

Now, the case will work its way through the court system as parents, who lost their children, will be looking for answers.

Steve Goncalves : We find the truth, you know. You get the truth, and then that — that'll — that'll be everything.

IN REMEMBRANCE

You can see it in the stunned, silent faces of the kids. Faces that ask "why?" without even speaking.

Idaho candlelight vigil

Young eyes glisten, bathed in the glow of candlelight at a vigil held for the young lives lost.  A ritual all too familiar across America. The flowers, the prayers, the vows to carry on. In Idaho, they hold on tight to each other and to the memories of those loved and lost.

EMILY (memorial service): Life is so unfair and unpredictable (crying).

For Xana Kernodle's friend Emily, the wound remains raw.

EMILY (memorial service): And it tears me apart knowing I can't hug her. (Crying) So hold those you love closer. Hug them a little tighter and tell 'em you love them. We'll find justice for you, Ethan, Maddie, and Kaylee. We love you all so much.

And for Ashlin, Maddie Mogen's memory is still vibrant.

ASHLIN (memorial service): You truly will live on forever -- not only in my heart, but in the heart of so many people that were impacted by your beautiful smile, your grace, your patience, your open heart, and your craziness.

Idaho murder victim

Hunter Johnson remembers a pal he could rely on — Ethan Chapin.

HUNTER JOHNSON (memorial service): Ethan was always someone you could count on to make you smile and — cheer up your mood. … And I — feel so lucky to have shared so many great memories with him (emotional).

But those who are older perhaps sense that pain that runs this deep, never goes away. Kaylee's father, Steve Goncalves.

Steve Goncalves : You don't heal from somethin' like this. … it's never gonna happen. You're never gonna be healed. You're never gonna get through this. And when they die, part of you dies.

Steve Goncalves : We're tired of all these types of crimes. We're tired of all this stuff. And — we can rally around these terrible tragedies, and … We're hopin' that as a society we come back stronger. And we — we decide to not let this be accepted anymore, you know. That's what I hope for.

Bryan Kohberger's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.

He will have a chance to enter a plea at a later date.
