The Hunting Ground

Mountain Creek is approximately 1000 acres of perfect hunting country that will challenge the hunter in a fair chase environment. Large mountains create a valleys for meandering creeks to run through. From rainforest to open grass fields, the different habitats will challenge hunters of all levels of stalking abilities and marksmanship. Our guided hunts are tailored to suit hunters according to their skill, experience and fitness.

Hunting Vehicles

The designated 4X4 camouflaged hunting vehicles provided to Mountain Creek's clients are currently two Kawasaki 4x4 Terex performance 4 seater Buggies and two 4X4 bikes (ATV). These four vehicles are equipped with gun racks and winches. Two similarly equiped 4X4 John Deere XUV Gator buggies in forrest green are used by the Ranger/Guide. Three huge camouflaged Ex Army 4x4 Unimog trucks serve as back up to these vehicles and to retrieve harvested game e.g. Water Buffalo Bulls or Scrub "clean skin" cattle.

Only Mountain Creek vehicles are allowed on the property to take safari clients on game drives. The use of above mentioned vehicles as part of the safari adventure is included in the Mountain Creek's day fee.

Mountain Creek Game

Guided hunts.

We belong to the Australian Deer Association who - like us - promotes the principle of conservation of wildlife resources for future generations through sustainable and ethical hunting.  All hunting safaris are guided hunts in a fair chase like environment. This ensures that only identified animals are harvested. The guides will allow you the amount of hunting freedom, based on your experience as observed by the guide.

Trophy Preparation

Mountain Creek Game Park highly values its trophy hunter clients.  We understand the passion and full out effort required to obtain a trophy animal. Therefore, we will try our utmost to make your hunting safari memorable from start to finish. Taxidermy of your trophy animal will preserve these cherished memories to be re-lived many times. The Taxidermist fee is for the cost of the client. MCGP can arrange a taxidermist when requested at time of booking.

Mountain Creek strives to encourage sustainable farming and to lessen its carbon footprint. The trophy hunter can be assured that the harvested trophy animal will be fully utilised by the local community. All venison, bones, etc. that are not used by the hunter, will be processed by Mountain Creek. Bullet damaged meat, as well as bones are provided at no cost to local farmers for their working dogs. The use of the harvested prime venison is encouraged by Mountain Creek. Venison recipe books are distributed to neighbours to encourage and promote organic venison as an excellent "Paddock to Plate" product.  We promote local businesses and encourage our clients to investment into Mountain Creek's surrounding business community, e.g. using local taxidermist services who renders a first class service to our clients.

  Meat Processing Facilities

A solar driven cold room equiped with butchering equipment is available for hunters at no extra cost. Hunters must provide their own packaging- and meat processing items like herbs and spices, sausage skins, freezer bags, etc.

A farm butcher can be arranged to do the meat processing for the hunter at Mountain Creek at extra cost to the hunter. The client must request a farm butcher at the time of booking their safari or book it themselves.

CHITAL - AXIS DEER HUNTING

Chital deer hunting country in tropical Far North Queensland can be described as harsh and dry or lush depending of the season and the time of the year.

Chital deer are herbivores that browse on a variety of grasses, fruit and leaves and require a constant source of water to survive.

Chital deer, are arguably the most attractive of all the deer in Australia.

CHITAL DEER HUNTING SAFARIS

Chital Deer Hunting in Queensland can be described with one word: "rewarding".

From South to North, and East to West Queensland has a rich and diverse array of habitat and game species.

Chital Deer AKA Axis Deer hunting heritage runs deep in Queensland and is a much desired Australian deer species.

We have a good success rate for shot opportunities for Chital - Axis Deer Safaris book now for 2021 and 2022.

Markus is also a Taxidermist with many year of experience and can put together a complete hunting package that includes your taxidermy.

Queensland deer hunting safari packages and adventure opportunities await you in North Queensland.

Book with Downunder Chital Deer Hunting Safaris - Outfitter, Guide, Taxidermist Markus Michalowitz.

People also ask, where can I hunt Chital Deer? There are quite a few States and locations in Australia that have Chital deer, but the most popular Chital deer hunting location is North Queensland.

The next question people ask is how do you hunt Chital deer? The answer can vary greatly. Experienced hunters all have different methods that work well for them. But if your new or haven't hunted Chital before and depending on whether its archery or rifle or even muzzle loader, methods can vary.

In saying methods can vary - some things don't... like the norm... preparation of your hunting equipment the afternoon before you start your hunt. Having all your gear ready when the alarm goes off or your guide wakes you.

Headlamp at the ready, small back pack with water and a snacks, knife, binoculars, compass or GPS, camera or ph on silent, spare ammo or arrows, comfortable broken in boots or sneakers. Dressing for the conditions, as it will generally be very cold in the mornings and then it will warm up very quickly.  So the ability to quickly and quietly remove a jacket is typical.

You are up before light for a quick tea or coffee and a snack before heading out to a location is normal for most deer hunts. The same applies around 2-3pm for an afternoon hunt till shooting light is gone. Your hunting guide will work with you to give you the best opportunity to get you onto a Chital stag.

We have some great land to hunt on, so dry and wet water courses, channels and dams are popular a location to find Chital deer. The edges of thick bush also can provide quick opportunities as well or a well planned ambush from a concealed location or tree stand.

Hunting on foot with slow and steady steps, careful not to break twigs and you're constantly stopping to glass for Chital is also a popular and proven method.

Other methods for hunting Chital deer can involve scouting in your 4WD until you spot a lone Chital stag or a small group and plan a stalk from a distance, this style can work extremely well too.

Make sure your rifle is sighted in one inch high at a 100 yards. Chital hunting with a rifle, we usually get a shot between 50 - 150 yards to 200 yards.

Archery hunting is of course the most challenging as most shots are 30-50 yards, so practice practice.

Other names Chital deer are known for or called... Chital, also called Spotted Deer, or Axis Deer, (Cervus axis, sometimes Axis axis), Asiatic deer, belonging to the family Cervidae (order Artiodactyla).

Chital Deer are not native to Australia, they are from India and Sri Lanka originally... in herds of up to 100 or more. Chital deer stands at 90–95 cm (35–37 inches) at the shoulder.

bowhunting buffalo

Bow hunting and the growth of the sport worldwide is seeing hunting buffalo with a bow becoming more and more popular amongst clients. It is the ultimate challenge man verse beast. Buffalo have an inherent sixth sense when it comes to getting close whilst hunting them. Here at Big Country Safaris our guides love the challenge and rush of guiding bowhunters. The earlier months of the season May, June, July provide greater long grass cover for those extra close proximity stalks. However the landscape of our buffalo concession dotted with hundreds of creeks and tree lines provides ample cover for all levels of bow hunters and huntress both young and old all year round.

We recommend hunters be able to pull at minimum 65 pounds but 70-80 pounds is ideal. We recommend an arrow weight of around 800 grains in total for best penetration success. However the most important factor is the broad head. We recommend the following two blade single bevel one piece broad heads. You must ensure your broad heads are razor sharp. Buffalo bulls have a hide over an inch thick in places!

  • Grizzly broadheads
  • Alaskan Silver Flames Broadheads
  • Ozcut Broadheads
  • Kayuga Broadheads

Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions in regards to bow and arrow setups. If we can't answer your question we will have one of our close bow hunting residents and good friends answer your question.

Typically most bow shots are taken at distances  between 20 and 50 yards bowhunting buffalo

Australian Outback Buffalo Safaris

Bow Hunting

Water Buffalo offer the ultimate experience for bow hunters. The challenge of getting in close to a monster trophy bull, the patience to wait for that perfect shot.

Water Buffalo have a very thick hide, around an inch thick covering the shoulder area, it’s extremely hard to penetrate.

Using the right gear is essential.

We’ve tested many types of bows, arrows and broad heads over the years. We’d like you to be able to pull at least 70 pounds.

We’ve had the most success with penetration when shooting a 75-80 pound bow. However, young hunters and huntresses have had success with 65 pound bows. If you are only comfortable with this poundage, please contact us for further information.

More important than poundage is the broad head. We strongly recommended a two blade, one piece, non mechanical broad head. The broad head must be razor sharp.

Broad heads

Broad heads we have found to have the most success are:

  • Grizzly Broad heads
  • Alaskan Silver flames
  • Outback Broad heads

A single beveled broad head offers an edge on busting through the tough ribs of a buffalo. Sharpness of the broad head is still the essential key.

Arrow weights

For ideal penetration, we recommended your arrow weight is close to 800 grains in total.
