Time

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Testimonials

We thoroughly enjoyed our adventures and were thrilled to see the waterfalls flowing so well! Thanks to all of your great crew and we will certainly recommend Odyssey Expeditions to friends and family!

Kind regards

I would just like to say the trip Gillian and I had was simply put, sensational.  The other passengers were great and the crew, Mike, Bob, Ben, Cindy and Jayden were faultless.  I now have to try and remove the 3 kgs that Cindy's fab meals put on.  I will certainly recommend the Odyssey to anyone

Dear Odyssey,

I wish to let you know how wonderfully we were looked after by Cat, Bob, Jayden. Kane and Jesse and others involved in giving us a lifelong experience in the beauty of the Kimberley coast. They went out of their way to make sure that we were safe, happy, yet encouraging us to benefit from the most beautiful places I think I have ever seen, and I have been to many parts of the world. The kindness shown to me personally was beyond the call of duty. Thanks to the captain and each member of the crew I was able to do well beyond my expectations.

Please pass on this message to these lovely people. The beautiful Odyssey experience will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Our warmest wishes and gratitude go to each and every one of you.

Thank you for the information regarding the photos.

Thanks also to you and your entire team for providing us with a fabulous experience and the chance to make new friends with the passengers, and the crew.

Thanks also for looking after our car and caravan while we were on board.

We really enjoyed the experience of the Kimberley from the ocean made all the more special by the work of the crew on board.

Best wishes to you and all the Odyssey team.

Just a quick note to thank you for looking after Jane and I on our Odyssey adventure. Truly an unforgettable experience that made my 65 th birthday celebration a wonderful memory. Great food, itinerary and company. I’ve already recommended it to our friends who have been keen to find out about our trip.

All the best for the season

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for an outstanding cruise and for the extra care your staff took with Shirley because of her Alzheimer’s. We both had a sensational time and will certainly consider doing one again. We have also recommended it to our friends.

Best wishes to you

unforgettable adventure…

Discovery One will take you on an unforgettable adventure. Smaller than other cruise ships, the 25-metre catamaran has a shallow draft which allows us to travel close to shore, up rivers and between the many islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago. There is actually over 1000 islands!

We aim to immerse you in the Kimberley - igniting all of your senses - sights, sounds, touch, aromas and tastebuds...

We tow 2 tenders and take you on excursions in the adventure boats 2 to 3 times a day - depending on the cruise package (weather and tides permitting).

In 2024, we celebrate 22 years of cruising the Kimberley region. As Kimberley specialists - this is the only region that we explore - we are delighted to share the gems of this spectacular and remote region with new guests and returning passengers.

Kimberley Australia Map

WHERE & WHAT IS ‘THE KIMBERLEY’? Located in North West Australia, the Kimberley region is truly one of the world’s last frontiers and greatest wilderness areas. This pristine area is three times the size of England (or about the same size as the state of California), yet home to just 30,000 residents. Here, you will find some of the world’s most incredible scenery, fascinating natural phenomena, beguiling wildlife and ancient civilisations, whose artwork dates back more than 20,000 years. The Kimberley offers a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

WHY AN EXPEDITION CRUISE? There’s no other way to experience the wonders of the Kimberley Coast than by small ship as most of the key icons are impossible to reach by road. On an expedition cruise you will also travel with a team of experts, making sure you don’t miss out on any of the ‘must sees’.

WHICH SHIP SHOULD I CHOOSE? We’ve featured some of our favourite and most highly recommended ships later in this guide, but your final choice will depend on your own goals and travel styles. Our specialists are on hand to help you choose.

CAN I GO FISHING? Many of the smaller ships are fully equipped for fishing , allowing you to catch a ‘barra’ or two. Make sure you let us know if fishing is a priority when choosing your ship. Some of the ships you might wish to consider if fishing is a priority are:

  • Kimberley Quest II
  • Reef Prince
  • Eco Abrolhos
  • True North II
  • Great Escape
  • Kimberley Pearl
  • Ocean Dream

Each of the above vessels allow plenty of time for fishing and carry all the required gear and lures – although most allow you to bring your own rod and reel if you prefer.

Generally, the larger ships (40+ travellers) do not offer  fishing , although on occasion the likes of the Coral Expeditions’ ships might offer a hand-reel fishing excursion on a ‘catch and release’ basis.

AREN’T KIMBERLEY CRUISES EXPENSIVE? There’s no doubt a Kimberley cruise is a stretch for many budgets, but we do have a number of options available at various prices. There are many reasons why theses cruises can seem expensive, including high crew to guest ratios, the cost of provisioning in remote areas and of course fuel. But is it worth the high cost? You bet!

CAN ANYONE DO A KIMBERLEY CRUISE? To get the most out of this trip a reasonable level of fitness is required. Many of the walks ashore are on unmade tracks, which can be undulating and rocky. There is no age limit though – infact we’ve seen a 95 year old ticking the Kimberley off his bucket list!

CAN KIMBERLEY CRUISE SPECIALISTS HELP WITH TOURS & FLIGHTS? As a full-service travel agency, our expert team are here to help you put together your entire Kimberley holiday. Once we work out the cruise that best suits your requirements we will then help you add any tours (either day tours or longer journeys through the Kimberley interior), hotels, flights and even travel insurance.

WHEN SHOULD I CRUISE THE KIMBERLEY? As soon as possible! Check out the following pages for the best times to travel during the year.

Choosing the Best Time of Year for a Kimberley Cruise

Ready to tick that that once in a lifetime Kimberley expedition cruise off your bucket list but unsure about the best time of year to experience Australia’s wilderness coast? We outline each of the Kimberley’s three distinct seasons to help you choose the time of year that is right for you. Kimberley cruises operate between late March and October each year, so you can put a line through November to February straight away as its simply too hot, humid and wet, not to mention the added danger of the cyclone season.

Kimberley Quest Waterfall Season

WATERFALL SEASON (MARCH, APRIL & MAY) One of the main drawcards of the Kimberley Coast is its iconic waterfalls – including the towering 80-metre King George and four- tiered Mitchell Falls. Most of the coast’s falls are fed by the Kimberley’s drenching wet season rains, so the earlier in the season you go the more spectacular the falls are. The landscape will also be covered in a brilliant green hue, as vegetation regenerates thanks to the downpour. It’s not uncommon for the occasional grey and rainy day during this period, and it can still be quite humid, which can make walks ashore a bit more taxing. In our view seeing (and hearing) the full force of the falls more than makes up for the extra humidity and an occasional wet day.

True North aerial Kimberley

PEAK SEASON (JUNE & JULY) The most popular time of year to travel to the Kimberley, likely because the ‘dry season’ weather is characterised by clear blue skies and balmy days, which makes for a welcome escape from the southern states’ winter chill. Depending on the amount of rain during the wet season, there might be some water still flowing over the big falls as late as August, but it will be a trickle at best. One notable exception is the iconic King Cascades on the Prince Regent River; these falls are spring fed and will have a flow year round. If you can’t bear the thought of another chilly winter then June and July are probably your ‘go to’ months to experience the Kimberley Coast.

Odyssey Kimberley Cruises Whales

WHALE & WILDFLOWER SEASON (AUGUST & SEPTEMBER) From August (sometimes even earlier) to early October each year the Kimberley Coast is the world’s epicentre for whalewatching. Up to 30,000 humpbacks make their way from the Antarctic feeding grounds to the warm tropical waters of the Kimberley Coast to breed and give birth, and you will have the best seat in the house when travelling on an expedition cruise. It’s common practice for the skipper to idle the ship’s engines and drift with the tide whilst these majestic mammals put on playful displays around the ship. This late in the season it’s likely that Mitchell Falls and King George Falls will be dry (you can always see Talbot Bay’s Horizontal Falls at least!), but you’re likely to have more wildlife encounters due to native fauna having to travel further, out in the open in search of water. Wildflowers are also blooming, covering the ground in a carpet of colourful native flowers.

OUR VERDICT So which should you choose? It really comes down to where your interests lay; waterfalls or whales. But at the end of the day, let’s be honest, any time of year is a great time to be cruising the Kimberley coast!

Seven Key Wonders of the Kimberley Coast

MAKE SURE YOUR EXPEDITION INCLUDES THESE ICONS Here’s our check list of the seven greatest wonders of Australia’s Kimberley Coast. When planning to go Kimberley cruising, see our hand-picked list of the best expeditions then give us a call to help you choose the cruise that is right for you, including all the must see icons!

Mitchell Falls Kimberley Cruise

MITCHELL FALLS (MITCHELL RIVER) Mitchell Falls is perhaps the most photographed of all of the Kimberley’s wonders. The waters of the mighty Mitchell River cascade over four tiers, with a total drop of over 80 metres. There are a number of other falls in the area well worth seeing, including Little Mertens and Big Mertens, but Mitchell Falls is the main drawcard. The Mitchell River below the falls is not navigable by expedition ship, meaning that you can’t cruise directly up to the base. Instead, you’re going to need to ‘chopper in’. Some expedition ships – such as Kimberley Quest, True North and Great Escape – carry their own private helicopters, whilst other ships call in HeliSpirit (a local operator based near the Falls) to provide scenic flights. Typically a two hour excursion, including scenic flight from the ship across the Mitchell Plateau to the falls and back, and an hour to swim in the Mitchell River (above the falls – no crocs!) and take photographs will set you back about $500 – $700 per person, but it’s well worth the expense.

Coral Expeditions Guest Mermaid Boab Tree Kimberley

MERMAID BOAB TREE (CAREENING BAY) When Phillip Parker King (that’s a name you hear a lot of in the Kimberley) careened his vessel the Mermaid for six weeks of repairs during his coastal survey in back in 1820, his carpenter carved details of their visit into a small boab tree. His inscription read:

HMC Mermaid 1820

The beach where King successfully carried out Mermaid’s repairs is known as Careening Bay, and today – over 200 years later – the twin-trunked boab tree is now twelve metres wide, the letters huge.

You can read more about the history of the Mermaid Boab Tree by clicking here .

Horizontal Falls Kimberley Cruises

HORIZONTAL FALLS (TALBOT BAY) According to naturalist and documentary-maker Sir David Attenborough Horizontal Falls is ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, to be repeated again on the turning tide. The tides in this area have a ten-metre variation with the affect created by the tide building up in front of the gaps faster than it can flow through them and there can be a four-metre high waterfall between the bays. Most expedition cruise operators offer you the chance to have an adrenaline-filled inflatable zodiac ride through the falls, a real thrill and a highlight of any Kimberley cruise.

Kimberley Quest at Montgomery Reef

MONTGOMERY REEF (CAMDEN SOUND) Imagine being anchored 20 kilometres offshore, surrounded by endless blue waters, with just a speck of the far-off horizon in the distance. Then, try to imagine the tide turning and the sea levels dropping by ten metres to expose Australia’s largest inshore reef system, Montgomery Reef. Covering 400 square kilometres, Montgomery Reef is located adjacent to Doubtful Bay and is truly Australia’s greatest marine spectacle. Most expedition cruise ships time their visit to this area to coincide with the twice-daily ‘reef reveals’, and even after all my visits to the Kimberley, experiencing Montgomery Reef at low tide never disappoints.

Great Escape at King Cascades Kimberley Cruises

KING CASCADES (PRINCE REGENT RIVER) Not all expedition cruises feature a visit to King Cascades, as some of the bigger 100+ passenger ships are too large to be able to ferry their guests the 27 kilometres up the Prince Regent River to the base of the falls. That’s a real pity as King Cascades is one of the most scenic locales in the Kimberley. The waterfall itself is around 40 metres tall, with the flow cascading down tiered rock formations. The falls are also spring fed, meaning water will be flowing year round. Notably, back in 1987 American model Ginger Meadows famously took the plunge from a private cruiser and was tragically taken by a monster croc – who some say still patrols the Prince Regent today!

Gwion Gwion Bradshaw Paintings

THE BRADSHAW PAINTINGS  (EAST KIMBERLEY) When Kimberley cruising you’re bound to come face to face with lots of rock art. it’s everywhere you look; on cliff faces, rock overhangs and in caves. You’ll learn that there are two types of art found in the Kimberley. The more modern (around 5,000 years) and prevalent is the Wandjina art, easily recognisable by the pale, circle spirit faces drawn without mouths. The second type of art you will see is a major drawcard for many travellers – the mysterious Bradshaw Paintings, known as ‘Gwion Gwion’ to the locals.

Named after pastoralist Joseph Bradshaw, the first European to record this distinctive style of art work back in 1891, the origin of the Bradshaw Paintings is contentious. Dating back at least 20,000 years, some experts suggest that the paintings were drawn by the forefathers of the current local indigenous people, whilst others opine that the art has an Indonesian influence, and may have been produced by early traders. Whatever the origin, these luminous, ochre figures – often decorated with tassels and ornate head-dresses are a sight to behold.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Kimberley’ rock art you may like to visit Rock Art Australia’s website .

Download Rock Art Australia’s  introductory guide to Aboriginal Art of the Kimberley.

KING GEORGE FALLS (KING GEORGE RIVER) If you’ve seen Baz Luhrmann’s epic 2008 film Australia you might recognise King George Falls. Located in the Northern Kimberley close to the town of Wyndham, some of the shorter ‘Southern Kimberley’ expeditions don’t have time to visit these imposing twin falls, however on other expeditions the journey down the King George River is bound to be a highlight. The best time to experience these falls is at the start of the cruising season, between March and May, when the water flow is at its most powerful. After travelling twelve kilometres up river, surrounded by towering sandstone escarpments on either side, the sheer volume of water flowing over the falls creates a distant roar that grows in volume as you approach. On some expeditions the active can also join a challenging hike to the top of the falls for outstanding panoramas and photo opportunities. If witnessing the Kimberley’s waterfalls at their absolute best (right after the wet season) appeals to you, each March the Great Escape offers a nine day Waterfall Safari expedition that includes Mitchell Falls, King Cascades and King George Falls.

A day in the life... on a Kimberley Cruise

WHAT IS IT REALLY LIKE? After exploring the world on cruise ships ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 passengers, it came as quite a surprise to me to experience an expedition cruise.

The very term ‘expedition cruise’ conjures up myriad visions of abseilling down cliffs, crawling through caves or wading through a swamp. I had this vision of waking up at 5am to trek through the jungle in search of a rare bird. After eight hours of slashing our way through the jungle covered in leeches we finally come across the last pink bird of paradise in existence.

Now, it is true that you can find really strenuous and challenging expedition style holidays if you want. However, I soon found out that expedition cruising was nothing like that. The expedition cruises I have been on have been the most relaxing and enjoyable of my 30 year career in travel writing.

Let me take you through a day aboard a typical expedition cruise. Today, I have something really special for you. We are visiting one of Australia’s most iconic adventure destinations, the spectacular Horizontal Falls on Australia’s wild Kimberley Coast.

Coral Discoverer zodiac at Horizontal falls

The first thing I notice on rising at 7am is the ship entering the stunning Talbot Bay with high cliffs all around. I race upstairs to get some pics and video as the sun rises over the sea. Many of my fellow expeditioners are already up, enjoying a morning walk. Breakfast is from 7.30am and is a buffet with a wide selection of goodies available. At 9am we walk on board our 72 seater expedition tender and settle in. I get there early so I can grab my favourite spot for filming and photography. We go on an exploration cruise through the many striking bays and passages of this massive inlet. The water is very still on this particular day and the huge white clouds above are mirrored in the water giving an amazing photo opportunity. The tender’s engines comes to stop and we glide through the still blue water, allowing us to fully appreciate nature at its most majestic display.

Coral Discoverer aerial Kimberley Cruises

We then head for the world famous Horizontal Falls which most people on board rate as the highlight of our entire cruise. The ship’s two zodiacs are waiting to us through the Falls. In groups of five, clad in life jackets, plus the skipper, we climb from the explorer boat on to the zodiac. It is surprisingly easy to get aboard and perch on the outer inflatable side of the zodiac. The 12m tide is really racing through the small gap in the cliffs and looks a bit like the rapids in the Grand Canyon. We race along bumping and jumping across the angry, swirling monster. Am I scared? Not really, the exhilaration of that ride soon eliminates any second thoughts you may have about it all.

David Attenborough described the Horizontal Falls “one of the greatest natural wonders in the world”. And, as we surge through the gap at its wildest point, it’s easy to agree with the world’s most famous nature adventurer. We enter a wide bay and then discover another horizontal waterfall further on which has the same intensity as the first one. Our skipper cleverly steers us through the narrow, roaring, raging gap with sheer cliffs on either side. Returning through the two falls is just as exhilarating.

Coral Discoverer zodiac wave

Back on board the explorer tender everyone is excited about the unique adventure they have just experienced. They cheer each returning group on the zodiac and the zodiac people yell back in excitement. Surgeons from New York and CEOs from Germany are jumping and down like 10-year-olds. We return to the ship just after midday and a mouth watering buffet awaits us. How the chefs on board can turn out such sumptuous food in such a small galley is beyond me. I guess it’s all forward planning and a natural talent for what their guests like to eat. Most of my fellow travellers have experienced fine dining around the world, so our ship’s chefs have to impress with their food.

Drinks bar Coral Discoverer

At 2pm lunch is finished and we climb aboard the explorer boat for another leisurely cruise, this time to Silica Beach on Hidden Island. We revel in its white sands and crystal waters. There’s even the chance for a cooling dip. This shorter excursion is a relaxing wind down after the dramatic events of the morning. We return to the ship just after 4pm which gives everyone time to sort through their photos or have a quick nap. At 5.30pm I nip up to the top bar for a cleansing ale with my fellow adventurers. At 6pm our Expedition Leader gives us a quick rundown of the day’s events including some photos of all the action. He then lets us know the plans for the next day.

Coral Discoverer al fresco dining top deck

Dinner is served at 6.30pm and I enjoy a nice Australian Semillon Sauvignon Blanc with a stunning seafood à la carte dinner that would compliment even the most fastidious restaurant ashore . All the talk is about the Horizontal Falls and the amazing day we have just experienced.

An older lady from Hornsby named Madeline on my table confesses she was ready to pull out of the zodiac ride after seeing the falls. “I never thought I’d do it even though I had dreamt about it for years. But I did it!” she said, her voice wavering. “And now I can tell my grandkids. I really achieved the dream of a lifetime” she said excitedly. The table went quite for a short time and then I lead a toast: “To Madeline!” Eight wine glasses clinked as one. “To dreams,” Madeline replied raising her glass.

After dinner I head on deck where many are enjoying the warm night air of the Kimberley. It was just one day in our lives, but what a day it was. Like many days on an expedition cruise, it is a day we will remember forever. For Madeline, the dream of a lifetime had come true that very day.

Best Ships for Kimberley Cruises

WHICH SMALL SHIPS DO WE RECOMMEND AND WHY? Over 26 years ago we designed and operated the Kimberley’s very first expedition cruises . Now, we’re using all of that experience and insider knowledge to help you choose the ship and itinerary that best suits your interests and travel style. We work with only a hand-picked portfolio of the best ships, meaning we wont try to convince you to travel on a ship carrying 100s of passengers, or one which requires a side trip to an Indonesian port purely for paperwork reasons (as is the case with some non Australian-flagged ships). Our aim is to listen to you and your desires and suggest the ship that we think best fits what you have in mind. Eco Abrolhos

Eco Abrolhos

Operated by: Eco Abrolhos Cruises

At 35 metres in length, the Eco Abrolhos can accommodate just 32 passengers in twin share cabins on Western Australia's Kimberley Coast. She is a multi-hull vessel supporting four levels of operating decks. This expedition ship is an ideal size with her 17 en suited cabins, all of which are air-conditioned.

Eco Abrolhos offer comprehensive 13 night expedition cruises through the Kimberley, of which there are just eight for the season – four from Broome to Darwin (or vice versa) and four from Wyndham to Broome (and vice versa). The experienced Australian crew pride themselves on showing each and every guest a complete cross-section of all that the magnificent Kimberley has to offer. The cruises start and finish on the spring tide (new and full moon) to provide guests the maximum “WOW” factor at critical tidal areas like Montgomery Reef, The Horizontal Falls and the King George and Berkeley rivers – all of which are at the start or end of the expedition. The neap tides in the centre of the trip allow for better fishing and longer stops at the tide-dependent swimming holes and shore-based hikes. The Kimberley's 11-metre tides mean that this forward planning is a very important aspect of the Eco Abrolhos itinerary.

Eco Abrolhos cruises with four custom-built, high-powered tenders, each seating eight guests in comfort. The folding front stairs make boarding easy for any age. Fishing is also available throughout the expedition and there are options for both trolling and bottom fishing for quality table fish, which will be expertly prepared by the ship's professional chef. With guided Indigenous rock art tours, scenic gorge and waterfall experiences, bird watching, treks, freshwater swimming holes, incredible sunrises and sunsets, two optional helicopter flights and a complimentary fast boat ride through The Horizontal Falls, The Eco Abrolhos’s 13 night cruise certainly covers the very best that the Kimberley has to offer.

The Ultra-Luxury Kimberley Cruise Guide

The Kimberleys, Australia

Planning a trip to the Kimberley? Here is our guide to the top luxury cruise lines in the Kimberley, a bucket list destination.

Where is the Kimberley?

The Kimberley is located in the far north-western region of Western Australia. It is one of the largest wilderness landscapes in the world. Thousands of visitors are drawn to this fascinating region for its incredible natural wonders. Hot, arid landscapes bask in glorious sunsets where thundering waterfalls contrast the brilliant red cliffs and soaring plains.

Horizontal Falls, Kimberley, Australia

Natural phenomena like Horizontal Falls and rivers brimming with crocodiles, pristine beaches and spectacular reefs lie within this remote and indigenous landscape.

Due to its remote location and extreme climate, one of the best ways to appreciate the Kimberley is by cruising.

When to travel to the Kimberley?

The best time to visit the Kimberley is mid-May to August, where the daytime temperature sits at around 28-30°C and evenings are a balmy 19°C. This is just outside the wet season. However, some cruise operators run waterfall cruises from mid-March to mid-April where visitors can appreciate nature in all its glory with thundering waterfalls and spectacular light storms in a more humid climate.

Choosing the right ship for your Kimberley Cruise

Expedition /smaller cruise vessels can get into areas where larger vessels cannot access allowing for a more intimate and close-up experience. These vessels come with multiple smaller zodiac / adventure boats to propel you right into the heart of these untouched gems of the area. Some of these vessels have helicopters on board too, providing an even more exhilarating adventure and birds eye view.

It’s important to consider the type of Kimberley adventure you are looking for. Some of the larger vessels offer pools and day spas with multiple restaurant choices whereas the smaller vessels like True North, whilst still very luxurious, have limited onboard facilities and focus mainly on experiences in the region off the main cruise vessel.

budget kimberley cruises

Iconic highlights of the Kimberley region

  • King George Falls – one of the most photographed icons of the region. These 260-foot all twin cascades are phenomenal against the burnt red cliffs. Vessels like True North can get right up close to the foot of the falls.
  • Horizontal Falls and Talbot Bay – The Horizontal Falls are fast moving tidal currents that flow through two narrow gorges in Talbot Bay, located in the Buccaneer Archipelago. Most of the cruises will take guests on fast jet boat rides through the currents.
  • Mitchell Falls – a breathtaking waterfall at its height at the end of the wet season. Fly over the falls via helicopter or take the hike in – that is well-worth the journey.
  • Baccaneer Archipelago – the Kimberley is home to one of the highest concentrations of islands in the world. Some harbour ancient rock art dating back to Aboriginal times like Bigge Island.
  • The red rocks of Cape Leveque contrast the turquoise sea, the northernmost point of Dampier Peninsula.
  • Montgomery Reef – Australia’s largest inshore reef that rises from the ocean with an incredible sound as the tides wash over it.
  • Kuri Bay – Nestled within the untamed Kimberley wilderness in Western Australia, Kuri Bay is a remote coastal haven which boasts pristine beaches, secluded coves, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life.
  • Vansittart Bay – Vansittart Bay beckons adventurers seeking rugged beauty. Marvel at cascading waterfalls and discover the haunting wreckage of WWII aircraft.
  • Some activities available such as barramundi fishing trips, crocodile spotting cruises, whales off the coast of Broome, and camel rides on Cable Beach in Broome

How to get to the Kimberley

Most of the cruises we featured start and finish in Broome or Wyndham (via Kununurra), however Darwin is also another port for some itineraries.

What to pack when visiting the Kimberley

A diverse landscape that is dry and arid with lush rainforest and stunning waterfalls requires careful packing to ensure you have the right clothing and gear for different activities and weather conditions. Light-weight cotton clothing ideally with long sleeves for sun protection. Pack layers to accommodate the dry heat and slightly cooler evenings.

Good walking shoes as well as wet shoes for shore excursions and reef landings are a must. A hat, sunglasses, swimmers and sunscreen are also essentials for the suitcase. A spray jacket, water bottle and lip balm with SPF is also a good idea. Depending on where you are planning to visit, gaiters will protect your ankles and legs if you are planning to do the Kunmunya Hike. Many cruise vessels have a smart casual dress code for evening dinners on board, so pop in a few outfits for dinner.

KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. Wil maps STATE WA 13 Night

April - August

Note: Alternative 7 day and 10 day True North Kimberley Cruises are available between March and August, or visit Rowley Shoal’s coral atolls in September.

You'll embark on your True North Kimberley cruise from Kununurra, boarding around 5.00 pm in time for a sunset drink before setting sail at 6.30 pm. Get to know your fellow adventurers over a special dinner served shortly after leaving port for the overnight cruise to King George River.

Included: D

On your first full day you will encounter one of the Kimberley's must-see attractions, the mighty King George River and falls. Here you'll anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and find endless places to explore. Climb the gorge walls or take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight. A walk at Tranquil Bay is also an option this afternoon, or learn of the history of the Koolama wreck. Enjoy sunset drinks and dinner as the stars light up the Kimberley night sky.

Included: B - L - D

True north TWN FALLS HIKE

Explore the Drysdale and fish for the impressive mangrove jack, before heading up-river for tea and scones. There's an opportunity to indulge in some beachcombing and the ship’s helicopter will visit the remote community of Kalumburu during the afternoon.

True north billy tea drysdale river

Take up the opportunity to visit the ‘Bradshaws’ ancient rock art site featuring some of the oldest paintings known to man. Opt for the heli-picnic at Eagle Falls for aerial views and destination lunch alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in the middle of remote far-north of Western Australia. The tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and creeks before all the guests reconvene to share tales over drinks on the deck.

Day3 True North eagle falls

The Mitchell River is the destination of the day, where the adventure boats head up to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim. We'll join the fishermen to hunt for the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls. Next is a unique opportunity to sip a glass of sparkling trying on exquisite pieces of diamond and pearl jewellery, created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

Day7 True North The Kimberley Excursion 1

Wake up to views over the turquoise waters of Swift Bay and an early breakfast before a search for the black-lip oyster. Savour their unique taste direct from the rock before heading to some Wandjina galleries nearby. Keep watch over the waters to spot some light game species that inhabit this area such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel as you head to the picturesque Winyalkin Island for sunset drinks.

True north winyalkin island

The Roe River offers another great opportunity to catch barramundi as we explore a river that boasts one of the highest crocodile counts in the Kimberley. The Roe was named after the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia, John Septimus Roe. He conducted numerous expeditions along the Kimberley coast between 1829 and 1849 and the ship’s helicopter will dramatically demonstrate the maze of creeks and endless coast that the early explorers encountered. In the afternoon, sail into Prince Frederick Harbour to visit a Wandjina art site on the aptly named Art Island. The helicopter will be available to perch on one of the Kimberley’s highest peaks for sunset overlooking Prince Frederick Harbour.

PRINCE FREDERICK

Journey along the magnificent Hunter River today, a river system lined with red cliffs and rainforest beyond. The Hunter is about as far away from civilisation as you can get in Australia, and the area is known for its large crocodile population and mud-crabs nesting in the dense mangroves. Activities today include fishing, bird-watching, mud-crabbing and simply exploring where few have been before. We highly recommend the hike to Jackson Falls or enjoy the splendour from the helicopter. As the afternoon approaches, visit one of the Kimberley’s most historic sites, the Phillip Parker King’s boab tree.

True North Kimberley Hunter River

The scenery will capture you today as you cruise along the Prince Regent River before pulling up at the base of the King Cascades waterfall. View the falls as they rain down from above, before another helicopter flight to a remote spot that you’ll never forget; land alongside a crystal clear billabong for a picnic lunch.

Day5 True North Kimberley King Cascade

Early-risers will be treated to a heli-flight with a difference; a champagne sunrise on the top of a mountain. Then it’s time for more adventure in the tenders – a chance to hike, or take a refreshing billabong swim or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. Later the helicopter will take to the skies once again, for a multi-stop trip to a number of remote rock art sites that are only accessible by air.

True North The Kimberley Indigenous Rock Art

A different but equally magical day awaits with True North cruising, with a devoted morning to exploring the Sale River. Join naturalists and adventurers alike on a classic river expedition. After lunch you'll arrive at the impressive Montgomery Reef. The reef is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed with its 140 square miles of coral reef rising out of the ocean with the ebb and flow of the tide. Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a glimpse of the world beneath the glassy surface. Turtles, dugong, manta rays and other marine life call this special ecosystem home. Helicopter and tender boat adventures are options today or just take in the views of the reef from the deck. Included: B - L - D

Day6 True North Kimberley Montgomery Reef

Start the day with some fishing at 'Three Ways' followed by a moderate walk to Ruby Falls; be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool. Later, keen anglers will take-off on a heli fishing adventure to a secret spot where the fresh water meets the salt. As the day comes to an end, make your way to the bar lounge for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

True North Kimberley Fishing 1

Today you'll reach the final icon on your cruise of the Kimberley's - Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience.

Take a refreshing swim and walk along white sand Silica Beach or head to Whirlpool Pass, another demonstration of the Kimberley’s powerful tides.

As your day and adventure on True North draws to a close, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travellers, sharing your most treasured moments in this beautiful region.

Reef Prince: Kimberley Cruise

With a personal family feel, Kimberley Expeditions focus is on value for money for all travellers.   MV Reef Prince  is a 38 m expedition vessel that has undergone a recent multi-million dollar refurbishment in 2019.

The advanced catamaran design ensures a very quiet operation, spacious interior with phenomenal stability. Perfect for gliding into secluded shallow bays as she draws only 1.8 meters. Reef Prince allows for comfort for all guests with a choice of accommodation types to suit all budgets. The friendly and experienced crew will keep you busy with amazing activities, great food and plenty of time to relax and unwind.

Most excursions are via the tender vessel “Regent” . Regent is a 10 metre passenger tender that can take all passengers ashore or on expedition at the same time. With safe easy access, commentary, comfortable seating, toilet, shade plus an open area for enjoying the waterfalls, Regent is a fantastic asset to our expeditions. This is a territory that is two-thirds the size of France and has 38,000 people living in it. Half are aborigines descended from Australia's first inhabitants. These distant ancestors have bestowed a culture and cave art with an ongoing sense of mystery. This is a region that you fly over or approach by sea because it is unspoilt and wild . Red soil, ochre cliffs, feisty inlets, roaring waterfalls, saltwater crocodiles... Welcome to the Kimberley .

Must-Sees - Kimberley

What should you see in the Kimberley? Visit the north-west of Australia to enjoy the extraordinary landscapes of this isolated region from the water or air and discover its wild fauna .

Travel to the Kimberley region and you will experience an unusual adventure in the heart of an unspoilt land. Wild animals, aborigine culture, breathtaking landscapes... Below is our useful guide to read before you visit the Kimberley .

Fly over the Bungle Bungle Range

Wyndham , the northernmost town in the Kimberley region, is a special gateway. This area with fewer than 800 inhabitants makes the ideal starting point for exploring Purnululu National Park . Having been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, it is famous for the Bungle Bungle Range and its ochre and grey striped sandstone domes. There is nothing better than a panoramic flight to admire the beauty of this landscape created by erosion over a period of 20 million years.

Fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago

Fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago

In the west of the Kimberley, the land seems to break into pieces and slide into the sea. The result is a jagged coastline and no fewer than 800 islands forming the Buccaneer Archipelago , leading to finely cut panoramas. The best way to take in this unique geography is to take to the air. Soaring in a period Grumman Mallard amphibious aircraft , the views over this two-billion-year-old terrain are truly amazing. The undulating desert coast gives way to dots of land with red cliffs plunging into sapphire waters. Being so hard to access, this area has found itself protected... The nearest town is half an hour away by plane.

Sail along the King George River

Sail along the King George River

One of the Kimberley's marvels, the King George River is particularly stunning. Travellers turn into real explorers here. Guided by naturalists who are experts in the region, Zodiac® boats sail along the ochre, red, purple, pink and orange rock faces in the heart of 80-metre gorges. In the distance, the twin King George Falls rumble away. They are so vertical it gives you vertigo. The water hurtles down the cliffs. Watching is a hypnotic experience. Time seems to stand still, giving everyone the chance to enjoy the moment.

Discover cave art

Discover cave art

With 10% of the Kimberley having been systematically explored by archaeologists, hundreds of thousands of painted motifs in tunnels and on rocky walls have been found and listed. It is believed that some were done 20,000 years ago and are examples of Gwion Gwion cave art . This is characterised by its fine brushstrokes and rare aesthetics which tell us more about how these old civilisations lived. Clothes, food, arms, tools, ceremonies, trade... These precise paintings are a mine of information for researchers. One of the highlights of a trip to the Kimberley is enjoying this art, which is some of the world's oldest.

Enjoy seeing unique tidal phenomena

Enjoy seeing unique tidal phenomena

Water is king at Collier Bay . Gigantic tidal surges have created these unique landscapes, to photographers' delight. These surges can reach over 14 metres in width and are some of the world's biggest. They cause special phenomena, like at Montgomery Reef : the biggest coastal reef on the planet. When the water pulls back, this creates strong currents and little waterfalls. In Talbot Bay , when the tide comes in or goes out, the waves rush into a bottleneck. This water then flows away, creating "horizontal waterfalls" .

Unique features

The saltwater crocodile or estuarine crocodile is the world's biggest reptile. Males can grow to over five metres long and weigh several hundred kilos. These animals mainly live in Oceania, northern Australia and South East Asia.

Australia's aborigine cuisine revolves around bush tucker . This means all the animals and plants in the Australian bush that allow humans to survive in this difficult environment. Kangaroos, emus, seafood, honey, berries, worms, lizards and snakes are foods sought by hunter-gatherers.

Myths and legends

North-west Kimberley is home to magnificent decorated caves representing Wandjina, the powerful rain spirit . Poignantly moving ochre figures and silhouettes enhanced with touches of black, red, yellow and white leap out from the walls, alone or in groups, standing or lying. No need for mouths on their round, large-eyed and fine-nosed faces, encircled with headdress-evoking halos, for the extraordinary power of these supernatural entities to express itself. Both Aboriginal people and visitors are required to observe a strict protocol in order to approach them, and only the initiated are allowed to maintain these frescoes and create new representations of the spirit in order to continue the tradition of this ancestral sacred art , which is considered to be the most ancient in the world.

Book. Leafing through Australie aborigène (Aborigine Australia) will make you want to visit the country. This stunning photo book's subtitle, Walkabout , is a reference to the rite-of-passage journey taken by aborigines across Australia, following in the footsteps of their mythological ancestors. The Kimberley and other areas are beautifully represented in the book in photos taken by Sandrine and Frédéric Mouchet, who spent two years immersed in these isolated lands.

Music. The first rock group, in the 1980s, to combine aboriginal sounds with contemporary music, Yothu Yindi (which means “mother and child” in Yongli), define themselves as artisans of cultural reconciliation. Prior to becoming a pop star, the group's singer, Yunupingu, was the first Aboriginal person ever to be a head teacher. He developed innovative teaching methods designed to suit the distinctive characteristics of Aboriginal people.

Film. In Undermined, Tales from the Kimberley , director Nicholas D. Wrathall examines what will become of the Kimberley and the 200 aborigine tribes who live there. A range of farming and industrial projects in the region are challenging their traditional lifestyles.

Facts and figures

Some experts estimate that early aborigine cave art dates back 20,000 or 30,000 years . The term "aborigine art" includes these primitive cave works as well as creations by contemporary artists influenced by this age-old culture. It is therefore the oldest ongoing artistic tradition in the world.

The Moscow metro now has a full 4G coverage

  • On 19 Oct 2018

The Tele2 mobile network company became the first to build an infrastructure for 100% stations of the Moscow's metro. The high-quality 4G internet is now available on all 259 stations of the Moscow's metro, Moscow Central Circle (MCC) and monorail.

The operator has secured a 100% 4G indoor-coverage internet an all stations of the metropolitan metro, including the passageways, pavilions, and stairways. The investments into the project have exceeded 800 million rubles.

The Moscow underground is a specific infrastructure object, which has its own particularities. All works on designing, installation, and adjustment of the hardware should have been conducted exceptionally during night hours when the metro is closed for entry. A sufficient number of stations have a status of cultural heritage, thus, the network development has required additional approvement from the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow.

The network coverage within the metro system opens new horizons for the analysis of the "big data". Tele2 Network has analyzed the users' activity during the summer months and has indicated the busiest metro lines, which were: Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Zamoskvoretskaya and Kaluga-Riga lines. During the summer months, on the stations of Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines the subscribers have downloaded 125 TByte of internet-traffic, have made over 2 million calls with the total duration of 27 thousand hours, which equals to 3 years.
