Had a great experience at this place! We last minute rented paddle boards on a Sunday, headed in about 11 and the man at the front desk was very accommodating and friendly. He helped us navigate our way to our destination and gave us tips, clearly an expert on the area. He gave us a demo on how to inflate the tubes and deflate, and sent us with an info packet as well! It was a great deal overall to rent for all day, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an adventure!:)

Float the Kings River in Eureka Springs Arkansas

With easy floating and the option for Class III rapids, this Arkansas river is called Kings River for a reason.

By Vivian Wheeler

Canoe or float down Kings River in Arkansas

Located just 15 miles from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the Kings River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the country. With its headwaters arising in the Boston Mountain of the Ozark National Forest, the Kings runs north 90 miles until it empties into Table Rock Lake at the Missouri state line. On the Kings River, you’ll see soaring rock bluffs, sloping gravel bars, crystal clear pools and shady forested banks. Luckily, these sites should be around for generations to come, as the Nature Conservancy has established a 5,000 plus-acre preserve, which includes 10 miles of frontage on the Kings River.

Paddlers typically divide the Kings River into two sections. There’s an upper section of the river that spans 11 miles, which is a Class III whitewater stream and includes a waterfall at the Kings River Natural Area. The lower Kings River runs for 82.5 miles and is a relatively gentle Class I stream. One of the river’s most popular floats in the lower portion is the stretch from Rockhouse to Trigger Gap. Clocking in at 8 miles, this stretch runs through land owned by the Arkansas Nature Conservancy , and you’ll find interesting rock features, gravel bars and plenty of deep swimming holes along the way. Toward the end of your float, you’ll cross through a low-water bridge that can be a bit swift at times. Go right down the middle of the bridge.

If you’re looking to make a weekend trip out of it, there’s a lot to do in the area. Eureka Springs offers great restaurants and window shopping. Stop by Chelsea’s Corner Cafe and Bar for homemade pizza and live music, or swing by the Rowdy Beaver for a beer. If you have the time, make the hour and 15–minute trip south to the Kings River Falls, which is one of the best swimming holes in the Ozarks .

Excellent float trip!!

We went on a float trip 7/24/2015. It was great! We hadn't been on a float trip in years and this was a perfect pick to re introduce ourselves on. The water was crystal clear, flowed nicely and luckily with all the rain this year it was up enough to not have any gravel drag at all. We took the 8 mile trip in a canoe. The staff is very friendly and they were ultra helpful as we were on a motorcycle and chose to leave it parked at the office instead of parking it at the launch pad. I know we will go back but I think we will be on kayaks then.

We've canoed the White River in Arkansas many times, but this was the first year we've been there that the river was high enough to float without significant portaging. Our float took us about 5 hours, and the water is very clear and cool (not freezing cold like the White River). We stopped frequently on the rock bars and swam, fed bread to the tiny fish, and explored. We were concerned with local flooding that the water would be too deep, swift and murky, but it was perfect!! The owner/guides made sure we knew of the perils we might encounter and some tips on staying safe. We only encountered one area that we weren't warned about, and on a curve, there was a new tree down covering the main portion of the river. We did portage along the river's edge past the tree and continued our float. For lunch, we found a shaded sand/rock bar, spread out our beach towels, swam, grilled brats/hot dogs and had some cold drinks. It was a very hot day (mid-90s) and humid, so the water felt great. Sunscreen was a must, and I always take along a hand towel to dip in the water and put across the back of my neck or on my arms/legs during the heat of the day. It helps keep cool between swim breaks. There is a section they call the dam, but it really looks like a road that went across the river at some point, with a big section missing. The water rushes over it very quickly! They told us our options were to pull to the side and carry our canoes to the other side to continue the float, or to ride it out, but we would take on water. We parked, took a good look at it, and since we had so many supplies with us (a grill, coolers, teenagers, etc.) we decided to portage around vs. lose a whole bunch of belongings. We did all agree that the next trip, we would keep our essentials to a bare minimum, pack cold sandwiches, and ride on through! We will definitely return to Kings River if water levels permit in the future! Our canoe rental was $75.00 per canoe.

Water level was almost perfect. We enjoyed a great time floating with friends today. Partly cloudy sky's made for a great day. Floating from Rockhouse to Trigger Gap was awsome. The coolness of the water made an easy escape from the heat of the suns rays. The clear water and peaceful surroundings made the day fly by too fast. I saw so many fish I hate I had no pole to fish with. I'll be back soon for just that. Ernie and his gang was great helping us get on our way and it made for a really great day. Our cabin The Kings Cabin, was perfect for the setting. Very large and clean. It had just the right comfort to enjoy a camp fire night. Had a great time and will be back soon to enjoy more time on one of the nicest rivers in the Ozarks.

Ernie Kilman and staff are the most expert outfitters in Arkansas. Best equipment and shuttles. Most knowledgeable about river conditions, and they put your safety first. Generous recommendations on how to make the most of your time on the River. Ernie haz alwayz been the scoutmaster of the Ozarks. Kings River iz wonderful.

My 19 yr old son & I were in Branson, MO visiting family & wanted to break away for a day to float a river on a kayak.I had 3 choices w/in an hour drive from Branson: Beaver Creek in Ava,MO; James River in Galena,MO; & Kings River in AR. Despite the highest price I had ever been quoted ($75/7.7mile float included shuttle) for a kayak rental; I went w/my gut & the saying of,"You get what you pay for."I had also read reviews about Kings River on SouthwestPaddler.com & Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to the Ozarks by Tom Kennon. Because of the lack of information I eliminated Beaver Creek. There is also a lot of YouTube on the Kings River that showed that there might be more wildlife, clearer water, & things of interest on the Kings River vs. James River. The decision between outfitters on the Kings River came down to their websites & phone conversations I had w/each of them. During the Kings River Outfitters phone conversation I had been told that all the canoes were rented for the day & that they would be short a driver so customizing or anything longer than the 7.7 mile float was not encouraged. The Riverside website seemed mainly focused on their cabin rentals & didn't post that they had any kayaks. When I called Riverside, they said they did have kayaks, but I got the impression that my kayak rental wasn't their main focus. We arrive at 8:30am & finish paperwork. The shuttle bus fills w/paddlers along w/the suburban we were shuttled in. I was handed my receipt along w/a copy of the legal contract that I was told I would have to show to board the shuttle.Nobody ever asked to see our yellow receipt/contract.Everyone just got on the bus or in the suburban. When we got to the put-in at Rockhouse everyone was busy loading the canoes that are being taken off the racks. After awhile it became obvious that a couple that stood near us were waiting when nothing was left. I asked if they had a canoe or kayak? They informed us that the outfitters had shorted their count & didn't have a canoe for them & they would have to wait until the outfitters could bring a canoe back. The only estimation of time they were given was that it would be as soon as they could get it there. It felt crummy pushing off, wishing that couple a better day w/them & us wondering how long would "soon"really be?We headed down the river I didn't think about them or their situation until after the take-out experience & that is when I decided I should speak up. My son & I were the only ones that had rented kayaks & they were strapped to the roof of the suburban. We have never loaded or dealt w/transporting canoes & kayaks so we patiently waited until all the canoe people were taken care of.When the Outfitters came over to unload the canoes, my son walks around the suburban to hear & see them sarcastically say, "We're here to SERVE."A clear insinuation that my son should have at least started to unload the kayaks himself.I missed this, but the sarcasm wasn't lost on my son. He told me about the attitude he recv'd as we started down the river. The river was beautiful. My son & I both commented that we each only saw one piece of trash & no cigarette butts. As a former owner of a small business I would rather hear a verbal complaint & try to resolve the issue before getting a bad review or anything in writing.Additionally by the time someone writes a bad review they have told everyone that will listen before they get to their computer. So I wanted to speak to the owner before leaving.I really do not have time to post reviews w/the bad energy of a poor experience, but as a reader of many reviews I felt that after the take-out & the final & follow-up experience of being asked where I was from & being told that I do not have come back...I should post. At the take-out there was no one to assist. It is a narrow, muddy, slippery, steep grade. There were several in front of us & several behind us.Everyone is patient & struggling to do their best to pull their vessels out & unload. Pulling my kayak up the steep slope I fell in the mud.W/bruised pride I get back in the water to clean up.It is a bottleneck of confusion. As I walk away I see 1 man that I think may work there leaning on the hood of the suburban tying to ignore the mayhem.I asked if he worked there & he said,"No.I do not know.I quit.Well, I don't know. Why do you want to know?" I shrugged & not knowing where I was going headed up one of the white gravel roads & walked the 1/8 mile w/autos passing & covering my wet clothing in white dust.As I neared the parking lot I saw the owner & am speaking to him when a man that I believe is in a leadership position defensively & loudly joins the conversation. The owner has apologized, but as I explain my observations the big loud man gets more defensive. He asks where I'm from & yells as I walk away,"YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME BACK!"The owner just observed & hung his head.I felt bad for him. This day KRO was a fail in logistics, customer service, value, leadership & mgmt. The kayaks were the same as other outfitters use, but 1 of the 2 we used had damage & had a big keloid looking type repair visible on top of the kayak. Life vests were better than other outfitters.

I'm sorry you had a bad day on the Kings River. I am troubled with your review or should I say reviews, l have noticed that you have taken the time to post bad reviews on every single site you can find. We are a small Leave no trace outfitter working to preserve the natural beauty of the Kings River watershed. It would be in possible the to build steps at the river landing, the river floods ten to twenty times a year thay would be wiped out. Have you ever been to the Buffalo National River ?there are no steps at there landings. And the price for a canoe with shuttle is a lot more expensive than the Kings River. By staying small our outfit offers quality ,did you see how clean the river an banks were, we test out to be the cleanest river in this part of the US.An our equipment the finest you can find. Those were rock grads on our kayaks not tape. You are welcome to join us again for a free trip down the Kings River. Maybe you might have a better day!

While in the Eureka Springs area, take time for a terrific back-to-nature  experience and do a 5 mile float on the  White River Tailwater  from Beaver Lake Dam to the US-62 bridge take-out. Rent a canoe or bring a kayak and paddle early in AM if possible to enjoy the light fog over the water which results from 48-52 degree water meeting warmer air temps. It’s a mystical flatwater float with almost no current so you can really relax and enjoy a leisurely paddle. Fish if you’d like, there are massive trout in this deep cold waterway. The scenery is breath-taking with limestone bluffs rising two to three hundred feet above the river giving the water it’s mesmerizing emerald green color. The water is clear and ice-cold all year making the paddle a refreshingly cool experience even during the summer heat. This is a great float even for the beginning paddler. No obstacles or rapids. Just an awesome way to relax and enjoy 2 1/2 hours on the water.

  • Mulberry River

The Mulberry flows in a West to Southwest course in its rush to flow through the Ozarks. Access points are accessible and fairly common, particularly where the stream is within the Ozark National Forest.

The first major access point is at Wolf Pen Recreation Area, which is off of Ark. 215 and about 2.5 miles downstream from the Arkansas 103 bridge. Exit for this float is frequently Byrd’s Adventure Center, located 8.5 miles downriver.  Another popular access point is High Bank located on Arkansas 215, just 9.2 miles east of Cass and the Pig Trail Scenic Byway.  This access for the Mulberry is also the starting point to reach one of the state’s most breathtaking waterfalls called the High Bank Twins.

The second float begins at Byrd’s Adventure Center and concludes 7.5 miles downstream at the Ark. 23 crossing, often referred to as  Turner Bend . There is no shortage of class II excitement along this scenic route, including some impressive large boulders that influence and direct the stream flow. Redding Campground is a Forest Service development  located halfway through this trip and a private camping area is found at Turner Bend.

The third major float originates at the Arkansas 23 bridge and progresses 10.5 miles to a U.S. Forest Service access point known as Campbell Cemetery. Like the Mulberry’s earlier floats, this one features solid class II whitewater, plus several notorious willow thickets that should be negotiated with caution.

The Mulberry River’s final section from Campbell Cemetery to the Mill Creek access point on Plymouth Road is also a floater’s favorite. Along the 13-mile trip, floaters continue past Mill Creek another four miles to the Bluff Hole U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park just east of the town of Mulberry on U.S. 64. The pools on this section are longer, requiring a little more paddling, but many feel this is more than offset by the solitude and  offered during this stretch. Experience Class II rapids and the beautiful willow thickets lining this amazing river!

  • King’s River- Rockhouse to Trigger Gap

One of the most popular floats on the Kings, the majority of this quiet stretch of river runs through land owned by  The Arkansas Nature Conservancy . You will discover multiple gravel bars and deep pools to swim in and  relax by. As well as some notable rock features.

This scenic 8 mile stretch takes an average 5-6 hours, a number which is varies with water levels as well as the pace and endurance of the individual paddler.

  • Trigger Gap to McMullen Farm (4.7)

A popular day float, this stretch of river carries you through gentle snake-like curves. A part of the trophy section, floating to McMullen Farm is a great choice for fishermen looking to catch some small-mouth bass.

This 5 mile float takes an average 3-4 hours depending on water levels as well as the pace of each individual.
