1980s Las Vegas and Los Angeles meet post-iron curtain Russia in Harry Gruyaert’s dual-perspective book
Harry Gruyaert
“I’m not a photojournalist” states Belgian Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert – “m y influences come from painting and cinema. ” However, his color-soaked images of Las Vegas and Los Angeles in 1981 and Moscow in 1989 cannot help but reveal the signs of the times – images published in his new book East / West .
In following his intuition, Gruyaert finds himself drawn to documenting a “banality that is extremely interesting” – vistas rendered in brilliant Kodachrome of what was then, for the inhabitants of those places, just the backdrop to everyday live, but now, for outsiders, 30 years in the future, are cinematic visions of another world. “ The genius of Cartier-Bresson is not only that his work is extremely well composed, ” says Gruyaert, “but that it says a lot about the time and the place he photographed. ”
"I was excited visually but on a human level pretty sad"
- harry gruyaert.
Of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, though depicted in bright, cartoonish color, Gruyaert spoke about how he found them to be somewhat depressing. “I was excited visually but on a human level pretty sad, everything related to money. I found that extremely sad.” Very much like the sunny optimism of the American dream itself, there is a subtle discord in the work that indicates that all may not be as perfect as it first seems.
Arts & Culture
Tour de France: Inside the Peloton
In an essay accompanying the book, David Campany, identifying this uneasiness writes: “Beyond the visual attraction, there is an unmistakable feeling of melancholy here, as there is in much in Gruyaert’s photography. And a sense of disappointment too. There is some kind of elegy, to a promise lost or squandered for the day’s distraction. A beautiful photography of loneliness or alienation can be redemptive but it never takes away the pain, and never overcomes the social realities. For all the delight that Gruyaert’s photographs offer us, for all the colorful joy, these are bittersweet depictions.”
Like the artist Gruyaert identifies as, for him, the moods of the two locations – American ambition skirting close to vice in LA and Las Vegas, and the transitioning of Moscow from austere iron curtain capital to international city – provided two distinct color swatches with which he could work. “It’s like being a painter, you have two different palettes,” he explained.
Theory & Practice
Photography and Cinema
Magnum photographers.
“What could be a greater color contrast than the super-saturation of California – the ‘West’ – and the drained palette of an exhausted Soviet Union – the ‘East’?” questions David Campany.
One of several photographers to accept an invitation to photograph Moscow as part of an exchange program that would later see Soviet photographers visit France, Gruyaert visited Moscow in 1989, along with his friend and fellow Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka. It was Gruyaert’s first visit behind the iron curtain, and Koudelka’s first since leaving Czechoslovakia in 1968. A new Magnum photographer, the Russian Gueorgui Pinkhassov, was also present. The loose project began in late April, stretching over the traditional May Day festivities.
"What could be a greater color contrast than the super-saturation of California – the ‘West’ – and the drained palette of an exhausted Soviet Union – the ‘East’?"
- david campany.
In contrast to capitalist America, Moscow was starker visually, but the mood was much more welcoming: “It was extremely exciting, everything was falling to pieces – it was extremely open. It was an amazing time,” remembers Gruyaert. Despite its more austere palette, Moscow is somehow rendered more welcoming, and yet the loneliness that permeated the American work is present in the post-Soviet study too.
“Gruyaert’s framing and timing lend these groups some kind of unified consciousness. But, as in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the feeling of isolation is pervasive. The camera catches individuals passing, negating each other’s presence without fully engaging. As they sit on park benches or lean on walls, their gazes slide past, never quite making eye contact, trapped in a predicament of history,” writes Campany.
Although the work serves to document the nuances of a particular time and place, in making it, Gruyaert took hundreds of images, without thinking at all about how they might eventually end up being used, either then or decades into the future.
The initial intention was, in fact, for a magazine feature, but the huge volume of material created means that the work can now be reimagined as a double-duty book, featuring images not published before – two books presented together as one tome.
“I just want to be completely open and not think about how things are going to be used,” Gruyaert explained, discussing how his treasure trove of material was re-edited into the book East / West .
“It’s very good to let things lie in a corner for many years and then go into it again. You can do a much better job in editing. And the printing is a much better job than I could have done 30 years ago,” he says.
East / West is available signed by Harry Gruyaert on the Magnum shop.

- The town of El Rocío is like something out of a Wild West movie. Here, the neighing horses replace the sound of busy traffic, sand replaces the tarmac of busy cities, and horse-tying sticks replace parking spaces.
Timor-Leste
Mundo perdido.
- For a weekend trip out of Timor-Leste’s capital Dili, one can travel back in time to the Jurassic period while walking through the thick foliage of Mundo Perdido (literally, ‘Lost World’) Protected Area.
- The rural south of Italy receives only little tourist attention. The most notable features are the scattered small "agro-towns" and unique architecture, such as trulli houses.

Tom Cruise Attends Taylor Swift's 'Eras' Tour After Missing Suri's Graduation
Bianca censori's breasts nearly spill out of barely-there top in paris, bianca censori more suspenders than shirt ... boobs spillin' outta top 🫣.
Bianca Censori 's new top can barely qualify as a shirt -- 'cause only a tiny fabric strip was covering her nipples ... while the rest of her breasts were left fighting gravity.
Kanye 's wife stepped out in Paris Thursday night -- sans Ye -- and she was really embracing a minimalist style over in The City of Love ... sporting a thin suspender-like garment emerging from her pants and wrapped around her neck as her only coverage upstairs.
The fabric covers her nipples, but not much else. She was basically bouncing out of the top as she headed into Gigi Paris, a popular celeb hot spot.
She's still got her curly, dyed pink hair -- seemingly a wig, like we told you -- on ... but, it seems she's slowly opting for fewer clothes as her trip with Ye wears on.
Remember ... yesterday, the two attended a runway show in Paris where she wore a sheer, nude-colored bodysuit that showed off her breasts, legs and booty -- a triple-threat outfit.
In her new ensemble, BC's covering her lower half a tad bit more -- although without much on her top, it's obvious ... there's a heck of a lot more naked skin showing this time around, perhaps even more so than usual with her 'fits .
Ye wore a conservative all-white getup Wednesday -- complete with a full-on mask. Obviously, no Ye Thursday ... so, we can only imagine how he would've one-upped his previous outfit.
Perhaps it's no surprise ... Bianca's going all out in her fashion choices -- honestly, when hasn't she -- but even her zany style choices will fit right in during Paris Fashion Week ... which is precisely why she and Ye are even in town.
Hopefully, it's not too cold in Paris for BC ... we're not sure that top can withstand it.

A 5 MPH rule is in effect for the Iowa Great Lakes
OKOBOJI, Iowa (KTIV) - Over the weekend, storms struck the Iowa Great Lakes, again, with strong winds and rain leaving damage across the region. In the wake of the storms, Dickinson County Emergency Management took action.
During an emergency meeting, on Monday afternoon, county leaders put a 5-mile-per-hour limit on all lakes in Dickinson County, including the Iowa Great Lakes. The order follows recent storms, rising lake levels, and the forecast for more storms. Already, storms and high water levels have caused damage to the shoreline on the lakes, with docks, boats and trees seeing major damage after storms Monday.
The decision did not come easily for the Dickinson County Emergency Management Commission but they felt they needed to act to preserve the lakes.
The decision will impact boaters and tourism-based businesses alike but mindsets have shifted since the first emergency speed limit was enforced back in 1993.
“A lot of the businesses then were really dead set against having this happen and I have some good friends that run resorts and stuff, and they got to thinking then, that if we don’t protect our docks and shoreline, it’s not going to be a good ending for us in the long run,” said Bill Maas, Mayor of Orleans, and Chairman of the Emergency Management commission.
The open conversation is important to county board members.
“Today, Dickinson County grew up a lot. People came here today with the idea that we’re going to do what’s best for the lake, and we’re going to talk about what’s best,” said Maas.
The 5-mile-per-hour rule went into effect at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, and will remain active until lake levels are down for 72 consecutive hours, or until Dickinson County Emergency Management lifts it.
“Best case scenario in the decision we made today is that all of a sudden the rain gods decide to quit raining, and the sun comes out,” said Maas.
There’s a follow-up meeting on Friday, June 21, at noon to reassess the situation.
In the meantime, sandbags are available for anyone in the area struggling with flooding.
You can find information on where those are available here .
Multiple wastewater bypasses at the Iowa Great Lakes
The storms early Monday morning also resulted in several wastewater bypasses in the Iowa Great Lakes, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources field office in Spencer.
KUOO Radio says one of them happened at a lift station just south of Manhattan Point on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District pumped down the lift station and hauled as much wastewater as possible to the treatment plant to minimize the bypass. Officials estimate that about 10 gallons per minute of sewage flowed into West Lake Okoboji. A press release from the DNR says all drinking water systems and a nearby resort were notified, as well as those living in the vicinity of the bypass. Officials say the bypass ended around noon Monday, June 17.
The DNR Spencer Field Office said it was notified of an additional bypass around 9:30 a.m. Monday at a lift station near Francis Sites on East Lake Okoboji. KUOO Radio reports that the bypass ended around noon.
Officials say the city of Spirit Lake is also bypassing wastewater from its collection system to storm sewers that discharge into East Lake Okoboji. They say pumps are running at two locations on the west side of Upper East Lake Okoboji to try and keep wastewater out of basements. KUOO Radio says residents in the affected area are being notified.
Officials say heavy rainfall can overload wastewater collection systems. They say there’s nowhere for the wastewater to go and can back up into basements through floor drains. They say bypassing the water level and alleviating pressure in the collection system, keeps sewage from backing up into basements, which could present health risks. The DNR says staff continue to monitor the situation and will provide assistance to impacted communities.
