What travelers are saying about our Africa tours

Travel tips for africa trips.

The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.

Our Africa tour packages are designed to take you to the best sites at the ideal time of year. In general, you will want to visit Africa during the dry season, which differs from region to region. July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town are best from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for safari game drives or city sightseeing. In the deserts of Morocco and Egypt, the climate is very hot and dry; plan to visit Northern Africa in spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.

A trip to Africa can mean anything from a wildlife safari to sipping a crisp white wine at a vineyard. When you travel with us, you’ll experience all the best places to visit in Africa alongside an expert Tour Director and local guides—which means you can get the most out of your trip, no matter where you go.

On Safari Tours you’ll experience game drives in wildlife-rich destinations like the Serengeti and Hwange National Park. Snap photos of the Big Five from your safari vehicle, and experience untouched Africa in handpicked hotels that put you at the heart of the action.

If you’re looking for a mix of city and wildlife, one of our Africa guided tours to Cape Town is the perfect fit. Want to visit excellent vineyards and Africa’s best coastal cities? The beaches and vineyards around Cape Town, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth definitely fit the bill.

For Africa tours and travel filled with culture and history, you’ll want to see the Highlights of Morocco or Ancient Egypt . You can explore the Sahara on camelback and browse colorful souks or stand beside the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Great Sphinx. We make it easy to get closer to local culture and see the important landmarks because our carefully planned itineraries are crafted with these moments in mind.

There is no one dish that defines African cuisine. In Morocco, influences from Mediterranean, Arab, and Andalusian cultures can be found in the range of spices that flavor every meal. Traditional dishes include tagine —a stew made with beef, chicken, or lamb and vegetables—and couscous. Egyptian cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and the Nile Valley produces an abundance of legumes and vegetables. Try shawarma and kebab , two meat dishes that are popular throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.

In Kenya and Tanzania, cuisine is very tied to what is locally available—depending on where you are, you’ll find very different dishes! On our African tours, meals in your game lodges reflect Britain’s colonial influence. Curries and spicy foods are also popular, thanks to Indian and South Asian immigrants who call the region home.

South African food is called “rainbow cuisine” because of its multicultural influences. South Africa is also a very popular wine region, and produces some of the world’s best white wines.

Our escorted tours to Africa visit many different regions, which means a diverse range of cuisines to try!

On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. You’ll want loose-fitting, layered clothing for a range of temperatures, as well as sun protection, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.

If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.

Of course, once you’ve reserved your trip to Africa, we’ll send you detailed information about getting ready for your travels—including more packing tips!

African Safari - Compare 10,852 Tours

Does an African safari feature on your bucket list? It should! Africa has so much to offer, from spectacular scenery, friendly people and cultural treasures to blissful beaches. But above all else, it is the wildlife and safari lifestyle that will draw you back, again and again. This well-known quote by Richard Mullin is so very true: ‘The only man I envy, is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to’. Once you go on your first safari, Africa gets into your blood. You develop a deep longing to return to this magical continent, and to start planning your next African safari holiday. Be warned, Africa is very addictive!

7 Questions About African Safari Tours

Harriet Nimmo

Answered by

Harriet nimmo.

tour packages africa

Why should I choose an African safari tour?

“There are so many reasons to choose an African safari. Going on safari is an unforgettable experience, offering a heady mix of adventure, thrilling wildlife sightings, cultural encounters and spectacular scenery. It is a chance to escape the fast pace of the modern world. You’ll retreat to a simpler, more peaceful way of life, reconnecting with the daily rhythms of nature. For me, the wildlife sightings provide the adrenaline that keeps me coming back, time and time again. Who can ever forget their first sighting of an elephant in the wild or realizing just how tall a giraffe really is? And there is something so primeval when hearing the roar of a lion under a glittering night sky. Finally, going on safari can help protect Africa’s wild animals and wild places. The more paying visitors, the more local people are employed and the more incentive there is to protect Africa’s natural wonders.”

Which are the best African countries for going on safari?

“All the classic safari countries make wonderful destinations for African safari tours. These countries are Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. Which country you choose may depend on whether you’d like to combine your safari with another activity. For example you may like to add some beaches and/or Zanzibar in East Africa. Or perhaps Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe, or fine dining around Cape Town and the winelands of South Africa. If this is your first safari, South Africa makes a good option. The private reserves bordering Kruger National Park can almost guarantee sightings of the Big Five. South Africa also has good infrastructure and excellent levels of service. However, you will not get the sweeping savannahs and ‘Out of Africa’ scenes here. For these you need to travel to Kenya or Tanzania. Of course, these two countries also offer the incredible wildebeest migration. Note though, you need to travel here at the right time of year to see this. Zambia and Zimbabwe should also be considered. They have stunning national parks, including South Luangwa and Hwange respectively. Both countries are slightly more off the beaten track with less mass tourism. Botswana perhaps feels the wildest of the safari countries, although this comes with a price.”

What time of year is best for going on a safari?

“The best time of year, and the peak season, for most safaris is the Dry season. This is when the bush is less dense, and the wildlife is drawn to waterholes. Generally the wildlife is easier to find and see at this time. The Dry season means bright sunny days, and cooler nights. Of course, as the Dry season is peak safari season, there are more travelers and prices are higher. Dry season generally falls from May/June to September/October. You may also wish to consider going during the ‘Green season’ (also known as the Wet season or Emerald season). Although it may rain, often the showers are short downpours and then the sun comes back out again. It can be much cheaper to travel then, the bush is lush and green, and this is the breeding season for many of the animals. In East Africa, there are two Green seasons – the long rains between March and May, and the short rains from approximately October to December. In southern Africa the Green season is approximately from November to March. Temperatures can get very hot. Note that when it is wet there are more bugs and a greater risk of malaria.”

What wildlife can I expect to see?

“When it comes to seeing wildlife while on safari, this is wild nature and nothing can be guaranteed. You may see plenty of animals, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). But there will be game drives when you don’t see very much at all. That will make the sightings you do see all the more special. The joy of safaris, and what makes them so addictive, is that you just never know what you might see around the next corner. If you listen closely to, and learn from your guide, you’ll be able to enjoy all aspects of Africa’s wildlife. Everything from baobab trees to dung beetle, to chameleon and cheeky mongoose. Don’t forget to also focus on the birds, as even a very quiet game drive usually delivers some great bird sightings.”

What does a typical day look like on safari?

“All African safari holidays run to the same typical timetable. The best times to see wildlife, particularly predators being active, is at the beginning and end of the day. These golden hours at dawn and dusk are also the best times for photography. So be prepared for very early starts! You will usually be woken at dawn, and given tea, coffee, rusks or cereal. The aim is to get going on your game drive as early as possible at first light. The morning game drive usually lasts three to four hours, including a coffee and comfort break. You return to your camp or lodge for brunch. Then you are free to relax and take a siesta, or perhaps lie by the pool, during the middle of the day. It’s a good idea to bring something to read for this down time. Later in the afternoon you will meet again for tea and snacks, before setting out on your second game drive of the day. This will usually include a stop for sundowner drinks, to watch the setting sun. The game drive then returns to your accommodation in the dark, using a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals. Evening meals are usually served just after returning to camp. In some countries night drives are offered after dinner at around 8pm. Such drives can be a unique opportunity to spot nocturnal (only active at night) wildlife such as genets. Unless you have paid for exclusive use, be prepared for sharing your game-drive vehicle with other guests. This can be huge fun (although sometimes you need to be quite tolerant). It is always a good idea to offer to swap around your seating positions during your safari. ”

How much will this safari cost?

“The costs of an African safari can vary enormously. You could pay anything from US$125 to US$1000 per person, per night. Sometimes considerably more. Safaris can be an expensive holiday, and you generally get what you pay for. At the budget end of the spectrum are African safari packages where you join organized tours, departing on set dates, with other groups of people. South Africa and Kenya offer some of the best value-for-money safaris. Your choice of accommodation will affect the cost of your safari. Mobile safaris, where you sleep in tents, are great for groups of friends or families traveling together. Some safari lodges have taken luxury to the extreme, with private plunge pools etc. That said, you will probably have the same wildlife-viewing experience as staying in a more rustic lodge. It’s a matter of deciding what features are most important to you. If your reserve or lodge is remote, getting there will also impact the price. To visit the Okavango Delta, in Botswana, you can only fly into the Delta. There are no road transfers, so this adds to the price of your trip. The Serengeti is accessible by road, but this is a long, bone-rattling journey. It’s much easier and more comfortable to take a quick trip in a small plane. Whatever the costs of your safari, if you’ve experienced good service, do tip generously. A few extra dollars or Euros will make a huge difference to your guide or lodge staff.”

What should I consider when choosing an African safari tour?

“There is a lot of considerations to be taken into account when choosing an African safari tour operator. These include: If you are traveling with children, choose a family-friendly tour or lodge. In addition, you may prefer to choose a safari in a malaria-free area, for example in parts of South Africa. What type of safari do you want to go on? There are organized tours, departing on set dates, joining other groups of people. Or do you want an exclusive, tailor-made safari just for you? Are you happy to camp or do you want to stay in a luxury lodge? Your budget will probably determine your choices. Do you want to combine your safari with beaches, South Africa’s winelands, or a trip to Victoria Falls? This will help determine which country to choose.”

Widen your horizons with one of our extraordinary Africa tours . Discover the natural patterns of the savannah and the primates of the jungles. Visit the soaring dunes of the deserts and iconic mountains to experience abundant natural beauty.

It also contains various ethnic groups, languages, cuisine, folklore, lifestyles, and greetings. Behind only Asia in size and population, African countries have distinct tribes and cultural norms, making them incredibly diverse .

There are thousands of dialects and hundreds of official languages . Colonization has meant many countries also speak versions of English, French, Dutch, and Portuguese. It also impacted the local food and drink choices, with Kenya, for example, partial to a cup of tea.

Many inhabitants are subsistence farmers who grow all their food. Traditional roles remain in place, with food preparation the duty of women or girls. Africa is also the poorest continent, with 23 of the most impoverished 28 countries and an extreme poverty rate of 30%.

Due to limited infrastructure and logistics, Exoticca negotiates directly with hotel chains and airlines to provide the most affordable options . Our Africa trips originate in the United States, departing from New York City and Atlanta.

East Africa: Wildlife national parks

Evoke the spirit of the continent with famed Africa safari vacation packages to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and more. Follow the Great Migration from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti , an unforgettable experience.

Tours include the mind-boggling Ngorongoro crater, boasting the largest intact caldera after an enormous eruption about three million years ago. What remains is a 600m (1,968ft) deep, 20km (12,4 miles) diameter crater that shelters a prime wildlife oasis.

We offer several tours, including five-star luxury safaris and multinational trips. Some even incorporate a few days on exotic offshore island paradise Zanzibar.

South Africa: Landscapes and wildlife

At the southern tip of the landmass, the rainbow nation provides a heady mix of stunning landscapes, modern cities, and fantastic wildlife. Most speak some English, but 11 official languages indicate the spectrum of cultures and ethnic groups .

Most South Africa packages include the Mother City with its iconic Table mountain . They present splendid wine country, world-class restaurants, bars, and clubs. There are gorgeous beaches, thrilling activities, endemic vegetation, and grand vistas.

Famed Kruger Park Safari tours in South Africa offer “Big Five” sightings and hundreds of other mammal species in high densities . One of Africa’s largest reserves, it covers two million hectares and is an ornithologist’s dream with vultures, eagles, storks, and much more.

Indian Ocean: Paradise on earth

Off the east African coast are several acclaimed Indian Ocean archipelagos and islands that define paradise . Tours to Mauritius , Zanzibar, the Seychelles, Reunion, and the Comores offer sunkissed white sand beaches and aquamarine waters teeming with life.   These tiny nations welcome tourist throngs on Africa vacation packages, but massive Madagascar still lags. The fourth-largest island in the world, it’s also one of the most biologically diverse, having split from the Indian subcontinent about 88 million years ago.

A renowned wildlife and ecotourism draw, its isolation means most flora and fauna evolved independently. Visit for the lemurs, orchids, and birds, half of which are endemic. Marvel at giant baobab trees, rainforests, white sand beaches, and the buzzing capital Antananarivo.   This selection of Africa tours is hardly exhaustive, with deserted west African beaches in Senegal, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. There are stunning desert vistas in Namibia, Roman ruins in Tunisia, rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia, and gorilla-tracking in Rwanda and Uganda.

Delve into the mysteries of voodoo in Benin, or row a wooden dugout through the inland Okavango Delta in Botswana. Gaze over the city of Tangier, experiencing the moving early morning call to prayer.   Trek up Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain, which is challenging and rewarding like the continent. Africa takes you out of your comfort zone and provides adventure with enriching encounters.

Kenya vacation packages

It’s the classic safari destination, primarily due to the famed Masai Mara National Reserve and the epic Great Migration. There are several lesser-known game parks, though, and there’s much more to this far-flung country.

Exoticca offers Kenya vacation packages to the grassy plains of the savannah, the dynamic capital of Nairobi, and the warm Indian Ocean waters and beaches around Mombasa.

There’s also iconic Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, and a stunning variety of ethnic communities and cultures to experience . It’s also home to the Great African Rift Valley with herds of endangered rhinos and massive flocks of flamingos.

Uganda vacation packages

For a taste of authentic Africa , Uganda packs a healthy punch for its limited size. A landlocked country in East Africa, mountain gorillas in the jungle sanctuary at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are the major drawcard.

There’s also chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, which has the highest primate concentrations in the world . Visit Queen Elizabeth National Park for “Big Five” wildlife safaris and tree-climbing lions.

Uganda owns nearly half of Lake Victoria, the second-largest freshwater lake and the disputed origin of the Nile River. The capital Kampala is an enormous urban sprawl, but nature is what entices, and our Uganda vacation packages focus on these unique attractions.

South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. United States generally has strict customs laws.

Things to buy in South Africa

1. Zulu beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tires, and turning them into jewelry, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet goodies

The Cape area has loads of amazing purveyors and food producers, so this is the best place to stock up on chutneys, jams and preserves made from local mango, fig, oranges and grapes.

4. Rooibos products

This caffeine-free herbal tea has been drunk in South Africa for generations, and is a cheap souvenir option for friends and family back home. You will also be able to find rooibos skincare and beauty products too.

Festivals and events

Freedom day.

This national public holiday commemorates the anniversary of South Africa’s constitution democracy – a very important sentiment to Africans living in the post-apartheid world. Marked by military flyovers, song, dance and other entertainment, this is a time of celebration, peace and unity.

Cape Town Jazz Festival

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

Knysna Oyster Festival

This annual festival held over 10 days in winter offers so much more than oysters. Sure, indulge in some oysters but don’t forget about the fun runs, marathons, wine tastings, eating competitions, live music and cooking demos.

To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

  • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
  • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
  • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

<p>The first time I went on a safari, I went to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kruger-shalati-hotel-on-bridge-south-africa-kruger-national-park-2020">Kruger National Park</a> in South Africa. My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

<p>I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.</p><p>The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.</p><p>Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.</p>

My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

<p>This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.</p><p>I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.</p><p>It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.</p>

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.

I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

<p><span>The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers. </span></p>

I also had access to a kitchen in the same building as the bathroom.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

<p>Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.</p><p>Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.</p><p>My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.</p>

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

<p>When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.</p><p>My tent was quite spacious. My tent was luxurious and equipped with a comfortable king bed and a large living room.

My tent was quite spacious. I especially liked that it had a desk and plenty of outlets I could use to charge my electronics. Our bathroom was behind our bed, and I was glad it was inside the tent this time.

We also got a butler who kept track of our schedules and made sure we had what we needed.

The bathroom felt spacious, with two sinks and a shower.

The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

Another perk of the lodge is that we could have staff do our laundry every day, which meant we could pack less clothing.

<p>We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.</p><p>Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent. </p>

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

<p><span>The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views. </span></p><p><span>I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.</span></p>

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

<p>Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.</p><p>Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.</p>

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

<p><span>We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.</span></p><p><span>For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River. </span></p><p><span>We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.</span></p>

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

One morning, we had a special breakfast on the plains.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

<p>When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.</p><p>On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.</p><p>This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. We also got another special treat in the bush that morning — a toilet!

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

<p><span>After breakfast, we were back in safari mode. </span></p><p><span>We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while. </span></p><p><span>At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long. </span></p><p><span>Here, we knew no one else would be coming.</span></p>

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

<p>The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.</p><p>When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.</p>

On a different morning, our guide got a tip that another car had found a leopard sleeping.

The communication between guides in the private reserve paid off when one spotted a sleeping leopard.

When our group arrived, the leopard was napping on the tree next to his catch. Eventually, it came down, and we got a better look.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

Other activities that were part of our add-on package included a visit to a Maasai village in Kenya and a special happy hour and barbecue dinner.

And, for our journey home, the travel agency took care of everything, including transfers, until we boarded our international flight.

<p>In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.</p><p>After all, the main reason I <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/africa-vacation-travel-warnings-us-state-department-2019-6">fly to Africa</a> is for the safari, not the glamping.</p><p>I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. Even so, the budget glamping was pretty comfortable and just fine for a week.</p><p>But again, as far as the safari experience goes, the private reserve is hard to beat. Being able to go offroading and get closer to the animals is quite the experience.</p><p>And if luxurious lodges are out of the question, private reserves can also be visited more affordably. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.</p>

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.

I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. But if I hadn't had the 50% off deal, I'm not sure the full price would've been worth it.
