ABBA Voyage

It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to “The Visitors”. To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful!

To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades:

Thank you for waiting – it’s time for a new journey to begin.

“We simply call it “Voyage” and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It’s not easy to explain but then it hasn’t been done before.”

“It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me ( Benny ) with this project. If it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat. When you come to the arena you will have the four of us together with an absolutely glorious 10-piece band. And even if not in the flesh, we will be right there, thanks to the work of the creative team and ILM.”

“Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun and when Benny called and asked if I’d ( Anni-Frid ) consider singing some more I jumped at it! And what songs!! My respect and love go out to these exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters! Such joy it was to work with the group again. I am so happy with what we have made, and I dearly hope our fans feel the same.”

“When we got back together in the studio I ( Agnetha) had no idea what to expect…But Benny’s recording studio is such a friendly and safe environment, and before I knew it I was really enjoying myself! I can hardly believe that finally, the moment has come to share this with the world!”

“They’re such amazing singers those two, I ( Björn) was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs. They’re true musicians; totally unimpressed by pop star glamour but still having a great time being creative in a recording studio. The “Voyage” project has injected new life into us in more ways than one.”

“So, again, thanks for waiting! We hope to see you in the “ABBA Arena” and yes – see – because we have infused a good deal of our souls into those avatars. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’re back.”

Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid

Are you in the mood for a dance? Well, now’s your chance to bust out your best moves and go back to the '70s with ABBA Voyage.

After 40 years off stage, you can now see the Swedish supergroup reunite and perform their classic hits in one unforgettable concert experience. Described as "jaw-dropping" by fans, ABBA Voyage combines live music with virtual reality to create a unique, immersive show.

Through the powers of modern technology, you’ll see Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid looking and sounding just as they did when they first shot to stardom in 1974. To explain how, the team at RadioTimes.com have put together this handy guide with everything you need to know about the concert, including price, location and how to buy.

Since debuting Waterloo at the Eurovision Song Contest, ABBA has earned a place as one of the biggest bands of all time with hits like Dancing Queen, Angel Eyes and, of course, Mamma Mia becoming part of the cultural zeitgeist. Over the years, the group has had many number one hits and is thought to have sold between 150 million to 385 million records worldwide.

ABBA has also had very public differences over the years, with two divorces splitting them up in 1982. But in 2017, talks of a virtual concert began and by 2021 they officially reunited to record the Voyage album, featuring new songs Don't Shut Me Down and Little Things.

Now, you can see these new songs meet old hits from ABBA Gold for the legendary band's last hurrah. How could you ever refuse? Here’s what you need to know about the experience.

What is ABBA Voyage?

How does abba voyage work, where is the abba voyage arena, how much are abba voyage tickets, what are the best seats at abba voyage, how long is the abba voyage concert, how to buy abba voyage tickets.

ABBA Voyage is a live concert performed entirely by CGI versions of the four members of ABBA. The singers don’t appear in person but have instead recorded their voices and body movements to be transformed into 3D avatars (or ABBAtars).

Together, the reunited couples sing 22 of their greatest hits including Voulez-Vous, Lay All Your Love on Me and Thank You for the Music. They also perform perfectly choreographed dances and play virtual instruments, all the while getting backed by a live 10-piece band.

The show runs every Thursday to Monday with concerts usually taking place at 3pm or 7:45pm. In the audience, you can party from a seat, or book a spot on the dancefloor in the middle where you’ll find the other dancing queens. You can also hire a private booth for you and your super troop.

ABBA Voyage is currently running until January 2025, so don’t let this chance slip through your fingers and read on to find out how to get tickets.

ABBA Voyage avatars

The four avatars were created and designed by Industrial Light & Magic, a visual effects company responsible for the CGI in the Star Wars and Marvel films. With motion capture technology, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid appear life-like on stage to perform the full setlist, complete with singing, dancing and piano-playing.

All members of the band were involved in the creation of the concert, which makes it unsurprising that the avatars are younger versions of themselves. But with the lighting, sound, and cutting-edge special effects, you’d never know that nearly 50 years had passed since they first stepped onto the stage at Eurovision.

The singing was done by the present-day band members who performed the 22-song set over the course of five weeks while wearing motion-capture suits. The choreography is also based on the Swedes’ real movements but was actually filmed by younger body doubles. Then, on the night, all of this is put together into one seamless projection and is backed by a real band.

ABBA Voyage arena

The ABBA Arena is a temporary building that was entirely purpose-built for this project. It sits in Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford (where the 2012 Olympics took place) - and with a big light-up ABBA sign on the front, it’s pretty hard to miss.

The nearest station is Pudding Mill Lane, which is available on the DLR, but you can also go to Stratford station (on the Jubilee, Central, Elizabeth, DLR and Overground lines) and Stratford International (which has National Rail services).

The only car parking at the venue is 10 blue badge spaces that need to be booked in advance. The building is also entirely accessible for wheelchair users, with accessible tickets and accessible companion tickets available to buy online.

ABBA Voyage hotel packages: where to stay near the ABBA Arena

If you don’t fancy fighting your way through London when the show’s over, there are plenty of hotel options open to you.

Holiday Extras has some great deals for packages that include tickets to the event and a one-night stay at a London hotel, plus breakfast the next morning. Currently, it's offering exclusive packages for the Holiday Inn at the London Docklands and the Crowne Plaza on Royal Victoria Dock.

We know you work all night and day to pay the bills you have to pay, so we’ve broken down the different prices you’ll find at ABBA Voyage.

There are four types of tickets you can book: auditorium seating, accessible seating, dance floor and dance booths. Within that, prices range depending on the date you want to book and where you choose to sit.

Here are the base prices for each ticket:

  • Auditorium Seating – from £67
  • Dance Floor – from £91
  • Dance Booths – from £159.50
  • Accessible Seats – from £67

There's a lot of questions about where you should sit at ABBA Voyage and, really, there's no one answer.

If you're looking for a boogie, then we'd recommend the Dance Floor or a Dance Booth. But if you're looking to relax, reports have said that the best place to sit is Block H, specifically the centre section – from there, you should have a perfect view of the ABBAtars, but won't feel like you're too far from the stage.

If you're going in a big group, there are eight Dance Booths at the arena, and each have capacity for 10-12 people. You can book the whole booth, or individual tickets. With the booth, you have your own dance floor and dedicated booth bar.

Tickets for the Dance Booths start at £159.50 per person .

The concert lasts for approximately 90 minutes with no interval. In that time, the ABBAtars will sing, dance and play their way through the full mega mix from Honey, Honey to Money, Money, Money.

Doors also open one hour and 45 minutes before the concert, so if you want to arrive early and get yourself in the dancing mood, you can take full advantage of the bar areas.

You can buy ABBA Voyage tickets from a number of official ticketing partners, including Ticketmaster , See Tickets , Today Tix and London Theatre Direct . All sites have good availability in the coming months so you’ve got lots of options for dates.

Shows run all week except Tuesdays and Wednesdays and are currently available to book until the end of November 2024.

Melbourne and Sydney are reportedly vying for ABBA’s ‘Voyage’ hologram concert

The surreal Voyage concert, featuring de-aged digital avatars of the band, could be heading down under

ABBA

Swedish pop group ABBA could be bringing their Voyage hologram concert to Australia if new reports prove to be true. Voyage features de-aged digital holograms of ABBA, backed by a live 10-piece band playing over vocals originally recorded in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

The Sydney Morning Herald has cited anonymous sources, claiming Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park is involved in a bid to bring the production to Australia.

The paper claims the price tag to be around $50-80million, but the high cost is said to be endangering the bid, with a debt-burdened New South Wales State Government unwilling to contribute to the bill. Speaking to the SMH , the NSW Arts Minister John Graham blamed a “$100million hole in the state significant event fund” left by the recently departed Liberal government, last led by former Premier Dominic Perotet.

The same unnamed sources claim the Victorian State Government is engaged in its own bid to secure Voyage for a season at Melbourne Park. Neither government has officially confirmed its involvement in a deal to bring the production to their respective capitals.

Voyage first launched at a purpose-built arena in London in May 2022. The collapsable venue was designed with the express purpose of being packed down and transported for international tours. The band have indicated they intend to tour the production to Asia, Australia and North America. Voyage is currently set to run at its London location until May 2024.

ABBA have toured Australia just once in March 1977, which was also their last international tour before disbanding in 1982.

ABBA: Voyage in London scored a five-star review from NME’s Andrew Trendell, who wrote: “We welcome our new ABBAtar overlords, if only for giving these songs back to us in a totally new and joyful way. As the digital Anderson concluded: “Without a song or a dance, what are we? That is the question.”

ABBA members hint at Australia tour

  • 26 May 2023

ABBA band members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson have hinted that they will be bringing their ABBA Voyage tour to Australia in 2024.

After premiering to critical acclaim in May 2022 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (also known as the ABBA Arena) in London, ABBA Voyage is set to wrap up its sell-out season there in late November this year.

WATCH NOW: ABBA Voyage Trailer.  Article continues after video.

For those unaware, the ABBA Voyage show does not include a live performance from the band, but does feature virtual avatars that depict the group as they were in 1979.

Featuring handpicked hits by the band members themselves, the performance is advertised as a "concert like no other" with a spectacular live orchestra on hand to help bring the high-tech avatars to life.

And where better to take the show and its purpose-built 3000-seat arena than Australia?

Speaking with BBC Newsnight in late May, ABBA band members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson confirmed that Australia was a likely contender for the new home of ABBA Voyage.

"I have to say I'd like to take the show to Australia," Benny said.

"It would feel good to go back there and say thank you to Australians for supporting us from day one."

e

Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad at the 2022 premiere of ABBA Voyage.

The 76-year-old went on to add: "We achieved more than we could ever hope for...seeing this happening [ABBA Voyage] after four or five years of work...and realising that the audience actually connected to what was on stage."

"Not like watching a movie but as if we were actually there."

x

Abba Voyage is a "concert experience like no other."

ABBA only ever toured Australia once, playing 11 dates in 1977.

The band members are now well into their seventies, and performed together in public in 1986, four years after they officially disbanded in 1982.

d

Bjorn and Benny are very close friends.

Rumours did swirl however in 2016 that the iconic Swedish group took to the stage together at a private party in Stockholm.

According to the local publication Expressen , the very brief reunion took place at a party thrown by Bjorn and Benny in honour of their 50-year friendship.

Andersson has also previously revealed that the band had turned down a $1 billion dollar offer (yes you read that right) to reunite and tour together which the band declined.

$175 million ABBA virtual reality concert in talks to come to Australia

In good news for die-hard ABBA fans, the beloved group’s world-famous 3D virtual reality concert may be on its way to Australia, with the show’s executives reportedly in talks with the Victorian government.

Executives from ABBA Voyage recently scouted locations in Melbourne, according to The Age , and had meetings with the state government, Visit Victoria and entertainment company TEG Dainty.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: ABBA’s $US175 million virtual reality concert in talks to come to Australia.

Currently performed in London, a purpose-built arena would need to be erected to accommodate for the virtual avatars of the four band members and the extensive light show that accompanies the performance.

Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos did not comment on whether the show may be coming to Melbourne but told 7NEWS.com.au: “As Australia’s major events capital, we’re always looking at new opportunities and events for our calendar.”

TEG would also not comment on whether it had had meetings with ABBA Voyage executives.

“We won’t be commenting this time round because all details are commercial in confidence,” a spokesperson said.

Voyage debuted in May 2022, with its venue, dubbed the ABBA Arena, built specifically for the show on a site in Stratford in east London.

The show was developed for five years with a $US174.9 ($A260) million budget funded by global investors.

In it, digital replicas of the four band members perform classic hits and newer numbers for 90 minutes, while also interacting with each other and speaking to the audience between songs.

As of March this year, Voyage has sold more than 1 million tickets.

Swedish band Abba performing Mamma Mia on The Best of ABBA Bandstand special in Australia, March, 1976

Head over heels: why an Abba obsession is as Australian as Muriel’s Wedding

Of course we were excited about the pop group’s new album – this is the place where an Abba TV special got more viewers than the moon landing

W hen Abba announced their first new album in 39 years last week, Benny Andersson said the band’s most memorable concert experience was their first Australian gig: in torrential rain in Sydney, in 1977. “It still sits in my mind. It was pouring down, there was mud all over the place, and 50,000 umbrellas. It was a wonderful sight.”

Australia’s feverish affection for Abba has long been a curiosity to other countries. Already, preorders for Abba’s upcoming album Voyage are selling out on the Australian site, but our national devotion to these flamboyant Swedes has been going strong for some 46 years.

I was five years old when I first heard the euphoric opening bars of Dancing Queen. From that moment, I was captivated.

I coveted my mum’s Abba Gold CD, poring over the liner notes which to this day remain dog-eared and covered in sticky, yoghurty fingerprints. My best friend, Lucy, also fell hard and it was perhaps a peculiar sight for two five-year-olds in 1992 to be roleplaying “Abba” in the playground and competing over who got to be our favourite member, Anni-Frid (it was always Lucy because she was a brunette and I was blond). We’d even coerce our younger siblings into playing the parts of Benny and Björn, orders with which they would begrudgingly comply.

Twenty-nine years on, my unabashed infatuation with Abba has yet to subside and last week’s announcement marked a day I never thought would come.

After achieving moderate success in European countries, Australia catapulted Abba to stardom way back in 1975 after the music video for I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do aired on Countdown. From there, Abba held the No 1 spot on the charts for 39 weeks during 1976 with Fernando spending a whopping 14 weeks at No 1 in Australia. Countdown host Molly Meldrum famously made a decision after 12 weeks not to show the music video, resulting in furious Abba fans causing a switchboard meltdown at the ABC. The video was reinstated for the remainder of its No 1 position.

Even as a five-year-old, the music videos were a key part of my fascination with Abba. Rainy days were spent obsessively watching and rewinding a VHS compilation of clips, always fast-forwarding the 80s ballad, One of Us, because the theme of divorce and break-ups was a) rather too complex for my five-year-old brain and b) just seemed decidedly boring as Agnetha repainted an apartment in the video (present day me now considers this their best work).

A 1976, an Abba-in-Australia TV special got more views than the 1969 moon landing. The Best of Abba was screened four times to record-breaking ratings.

Abba-mania reached fever pitch during the 1977 tour – their only concert tour of Australia and, with an entourage of 106, the biggest tour ever attempted in the country at the time. Fans and media besieged the Swedes from the moment they got off the plane, climbing barricades, cyclone fences and throwing themselves in front of their cars. In his book Bright Lights, Dark Shadows, Abba historian Carl Magnus Palm quotes tour manager Thomas Johansson: “A mother ran up and put a baby down on the highway so that [the] caravan of cars would stop – only to get an autograph. That was to the extreme, but that sums up how mad and totally crazy the whole thing was.” According to the same book, the manager of a hotel Abba slept at in Melbourne cut up their bed sheets after they left, and distributed squares of it through the Sunday Observer.

Australian prime minister Malcolm Fraser attends an Abba concert in Melbourne at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on 18 March 1977. He is with his wife Tamie and daughters Angela and Phoebe.

In her autobiography, As I Am: Abba Before & Beyond, Agnetha recalls the mayhem that had consumed Australian fans. “There was fever, there was hysteria, there were ovations, there were sweaty, obsessed crowds. Sometimes it was awful. I felt as if they would get hold of me and I’d never get away again.”

The 1992 release of Abba Gold saw the Abba revival gain momentum, but it wasn’t until 1994, when both Muriel’s Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert made their debut on screens, that our obsession reignited.

Muriel’s Wedding, the story of a social outcast and Abba fan, tapped into the national psyche and spawned a catalogue of new catchphrases including Muriel’s quip: “Now my life’s as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.” Australians collectively embraced our past as Abba superfans and Abba became woven into our national identity.

When ABBAWORLD, an interactive museum exhibition, toured Australia, emblazoned on the entrance wall was: “There is nothing more Australian than an unhealthy relationship with Abba.”

Each May, thousands of people descend on the small town of Trundle, in regional New South Wales, for Australia’s only festival dedicated to the Swedish supergroup.

Australian fans who have been fortunate to nab tickets to one of the virtual concerts, performed by Abba-tars and held in a purpose-built arena in London, are all holding their breath, unsure whether international travel restrictions will allow them to make the pilgrimage next year.

But for five-year-old me, and for the many of us in Australia who woke at 2.45am last Friday for the global announcement, the news of a brand new album has simply brought a surreal comfort during uncertain times.

UK Cinema Refuses To Screen Eurovision Song Contest "While Israel Remains In Competition"

On stage in London, the cast celebrated the 25 th anniversary of the Mamma Mia! musical, and then had one more treat for the audience – with the appearance of Bjorn Ulvaeus – one quarter of ABBA, and one half of the band’s songwriting duo (along with Benny Andersson).

When Ulvaeus took to the stage at London’s Novello Theatre , introduced by producer Judy Cramer, he was typically understated. In a TikTok video posted by theatre-goer Kelly Allen, he is seen telling the audience:

“About this time in the evening, exactly 50 years ago, I was standing on another stage here in the UK. It was the second time I entered the stage that night because me and my three bandmates had been called back to perform our song a second time. Because the juries of the Eurovision Final had delivered their verdicts. Nul points from the UK!

“Despite that, we won, and by the thinnest margin in the history of Eurovision… On a night like this, it’s strange to think that, if we hadn’t won… I most probably wouldn’t be standing here today… so I’ve got to thank Waterloo for. But, in this room, I can admit that when I relax at home, put on some music, it is not Waterloo .”

He mused on the band’s success over the past 50 years:

He expressed his gratitude for “the sheer existence of music, because what kind of world would we have without music? I think one of the finest examples of how you can use music in an uplifting way to make people happy, it is Mamma Mia! ”

And he finished:

“I might not be here for the next big anniversary, but my avatar will.”

ABBA have sold more anywhere between 150million and 385million records in their stellar career, Mamma Mia! continues to play to full theatre crowds across the world, and ABBA Voyage – where the avatars of Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha Faltskog  and Anni-Frid Lyngstad perform all their biggest hits in a specially made East London arena – continues to play to full houses two years after its arrival.
