The ins and outs of one-way cruising

A nationally recognized reporter, writer, and consumer advocate, Ed Perkins focuses on how travelers can find the best deals and avoid scams.

I’ve heard from a few readers interested in one-way cruises. Although several of the questions have been about cruising to and from Hawaii for an extended stay in the islands, the most recent was about the Caribbean: “I am looking for a one-way cruise from Florida to Costa Rica and then a one-way return at a later date. Any options or suggestions?”

The short answer—for both Costa Rica and Hawaii—is “no.” You can find lots on one-way cruises, but in other parts of the world. Here’s a current summary.

Where you can

Most of the interest in one-way cruising seems to focus on cruises between a port in the contiguous 48 states (or Vancouver) and offshore destinations. Presumably, some travelers are seeking either to combine a destination vacation with a leisurely ocean trip or to avoid air travel.

Major cruise lines

Most major cruise lines operate one-way cruises on three routes to/from the mainland:

• Between Seattle or Vancouver and Whittier or Anchorage
• Transatlantic repositioning cruises from the U.S. to Europe in the spring and Europe to the U.S. in fall
• Segments of long-haul and round-the-world cruises, just about anywhere

One-way sailings between Seattle or Vancouver and Alaska often include travel in the other direction by air as an option (along with land excursions in Alaska). Transatlantic repositioning cruises and segments of extra-long cruises may also offer optional one-way air—usually a good deal, given that one-way intercontinental airfares are usually very high.

Seagoing ferries

You can travel one-way or even short segments along the entire paths of the Alaska Ferry, for example, and you can arrange extended stopovers at intermediate points along the way. When you total the costs of base fare, cabin space, and meals, the Alaska Ferry is really not any less expensive than the cheapest cabin on a conventional cruise ship to/from Alaska, but the added flexibility appeals to many travelers.

Freighter travel offers another approach to one-way cruising. You can usually arrange some combination of one-way, round-trip, multi-stop, and segment cruises, depending on the shipping line and the itinerary. From the U.S., you can find at least a few freighter trips to Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, and South America. One-way trips run from one week to more than a month; freighter agencies generally do not get involved with air travel in the opposite direction. Freighter trips start/end in a few big ocean ports and a few Great Lakes ports. Freighter travel is a highly specialized niche market; for more information, contact one or more of the bigger freighter agencies, including Freighter World Cruises , Maris Freighter Cruises , and TravLtips .

And where you can’t

As far as I can tell, one-way cruises are not available between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii, the Caribbean, or Mexico. According to a spokesperson from CruiseCritic.com , the website gets more inquiries about Hawaii than any other one-way destination, but there are no one-way itineraries at present. And since Hawaii is a domestic destination, you can’t take a freighter there, either.

Given the steady growth of cruising and ongoing addition of new routes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some line start to offer some one-way options, at least on the more popular routes. I don’t suggest, however, that you hold your breath until that happens.

Other regions

If you want to avoid flying, you can find quite a few one-way ocean and river cruises within the U.S. and Canada. But if you’re willing to fly, you can find lots of one-way cruises that start and end overseas:

• Within the Mediterranean and Greek Islands
• River cruises between Moscow and St. Petersburg and along the Danube, Rhine, and other European canal/river systems
• Between Bergen and Kirkenes along the Norwegian coast

One-way cruises within Europe often include optional open-jaw air tickets from the U.S. to the cruise’s starting point and return from its endpoint; typically, you can set the dates to allow extended pre- or post-cruise stays at one or both cruise terminals. If the cruise doesn’t include an air portion, you can easily arrange your own open-jaw itinerary.

You can also book one-way trips on many European long-distance ferries and mail boats. Several itineraries in and around the Baltic, Black Sea, and North Sea provide multi-day and multi-stop one-way ferry trips on some very exotic routes such as Scotland to Iceland. Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025, plus tips and what to expect

A transatlantic cruise ranks high on many travelers' bucket lists, especially those who love the camaraderie and adventure of a voyage by ship. Today's roughly 4,000-nautical-mile transatlantic crossing is more akin to the pre-aviation "Grand Tour" wealthy Americans once enjoyed than the immigration journeys many of our European ancestors made from the 17th to early 20th centuries.

Leisurely and luxurious, a one-way sailing offers fine dining, wellness-oriented pampering, enlightening lectures, glamorous nightlife and plenty of time to relax. Transatlantic cruises are also a solution for travelers who prefer not to fly and a tempting option for cruise lovers seeking a longer itinerary at an affordable price.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. However, for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience; plus, it provides the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

Here's everything you need to know about cruising the Atlantic — plus a selection of the best transatlantic cruises you can book in 2024 and 2025.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

While Cunard Line is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England, and New York City — which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2 — pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings.

These generally occur in the spring (late March to early May) and fall (September to November). In the spring, ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe, and in the fall, vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada-New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises , these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November — while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment — are a good option and a terrific value. This is especially true if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries may also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

How long does the crossing take?

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times, the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall. Yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. Additionally, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a midship cabin on a lower deck); also, be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it might seem counterintuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view. If you're concerned, opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. However, if you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, book a starboard cabin; this might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite — a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is your cabin's deck number and whether the cabin is situated forward, midship or aft. Generally, the ship's movement through rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is midship and on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic Sea and the British Isles generally take a northerly route. Vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter home port in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Southampton or New York. Depending on the length of the cruise, expect to call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland, or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira; Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands; Ponta Delgada in the Azores; and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to reach the other side of the ocean. Below are a few factors to keep in mind.

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season; some are also scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. One-way tickets are sometimes more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries available in the next two years.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2

• Transatlantic crossings: May to December 2024 and 2025

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton aboard the 2,691-guest Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners with a level of pomp and ceremony that appeals to Cunard loyalists, bucket-listers and memory-making couples or families celebrating a milestone anniversary or birthday.

These eight-night eastbound and six-night westbound voyages are all about the sea. There are interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamour.

Passengers and crew will keep the party going day and night this fall on a 16-night Rome to Miami transatlantic sailing. The sailing has calls on Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Funchal on the island of Madeira; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Or, party in reverse on the ship's 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona crossing in May 2025. It stops in Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Casablanca, Morocco; and Barcelona.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream

• 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise: May 5-18, 2024
• 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise: Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024

Certain Disney fans — namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens. These 13-night eastbound and westbound crossings from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona and from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale aboard 2,500-passenger Disney Dream offer a solution to that dilemma.

Each of these transatlantic cruises occurs when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will likely be on board, but certainly not in overwhelming numbers.

These crossings feature nine to 11 sea days during which Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and a southerly route in spring that means plenty of pool time. On top of that, each sailing includes a mix of culturally rich ports.

Holland America's Nieuw Statendam

• 28-night Adriatic Dream and Passage to America: Nov. 2-30, 2024

For a shoulder-season meander through the Adriatic and Mediterranean followed by a transatlantic crossing, Holland America 's 28-night Adriatic Dream and Passage to America visits 14 ports in seven countries. This makes it a true hybrid of an ocean crossing and a traditional cruise.

The sailing, aboard the 3,665-passenger Nieuw Statendam, departs from Athens and visits ports in Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Albania, Spain and Portugal before arriving in Fort Lauderdale. Of the 12 sea days, two include scenic cruising.

The voyage takes place in November, so expect temperatures to be on the cooler side in most ports and during the crossing. It's a good thing, then, that Nieuw Statendam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof. Holland America passengers, mostly older retirees, can also pass the time dining at each of the 10 onboard restaurants and enjoy entertainment that includes live bands at the B.B. King's Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room.

At $2,499 per person for an inside cabin and $3,749 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are a great deal for a four-week sailing.

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Apex

• 13-night Spain, Portugal and Bermuda transatlantic: Oct. 26-Nov. 8, 2024
• 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic: March 8-21, 2025

Celebrity Cruises ' Spain, Portugal and Bermuda transatlantic sailing from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale offers 13 nights aboard its newest ship, Celebrity Ascent. The sailing features port calls in Alicante, Spain; Gibraltar; Ponta Delgada; and King's Wharf, along with eight sea days.

Accommodating 3,260 passengers, Celebrity Ascent is a megaship designed with adults in mind. On board, you'll find multiple hot tubs but no waterslides, contemporary decor, 32 sophisticated food and beverage venues (including Voyages, Daniel Boulud's restaurant at sea, bookable at extra cost), an indoor solarium pool, a glittering Grand Plaza housing the line's signature Martini Bar, and nightly entertainment ranging from high-tech theater productions to multisensory events in Eden.

If you prefer to cross the Atlantic in spring 2025, take sister Edge Class ship Celebrity Apex , which carries 2,910 passengers. It will sail a 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona with port calls at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard; Ponta Delgada; and Valencia.

Inside cabins for that cruise start from $799 per person and balcony rooms from $1,272 per person.

Viking's Viking Mars

• 20-night Atlantic and Mediterranean Horizons: March 27-April 16, 2025

Passengers aboard Viking Mars for its 20-night Atlantic and Mediterranean Horizons sailing from Fort Lauderdale to Rome will meander through the Caribbean to the French-Dutch island of St. Martin/St. Maarten. They will spend six days crossing the Atlantic and call on Madeira and then overnight in Barcelona. Then, they will visit the French ports of Sete and Marseille, followed by Monte Carlo, Monaco, and another overnight in Livorno, Italy (gateway to Florence).

The 930-passenger Viking Mars is an adults-only ship featuring a sleek Scandinavian design. Guests can enjoy elevated (and complimentary) dining in eight venues, as well as daily activities that include lectures by guest speakers and resident historians. ( Viking bills itself as "the thinking person's cruise.")

10 tropical destinations you can visit without a US passport

A trip to the tropics is one of the best family vacation ideas any time of the year, but many tropical destinations can’t be accessed without a passport. And while in an ideal world everyone in the family would have valid passports ready at any moment, that's not always possible − especially with busy work and school schedules, historically long wait times for passports, and kids needing new passports every five years.

I've heard countless stories of people postponing or canceling family vacations because they discovered their passports were expired or damaged. Even those with valid passports may find they can’t travel because their passports expire within three to six months, which could prevent entry in many countries. 

For my family, fears of delays in issuing new passports are already getting in the way of planning a tropical vacation abroad for spring break , so we're turning instead to tropical vacation spots that do not require a U.S. passport. Fortunately, there are a lot more than you might expect. Some are easier to reach than others, but it’s always good to know all of your choices. Here are the best options.

NO PASSPORT NEEDED: 21 best all-inclusive family resorts in the U.S.

The islands of Hawaii are probably the first passport-free tropical destination that comes to mind for many families. Legendary for their beauty, rich culture and hospitality, they're also far-flung enough from the mainland to feel like a genuine tropical vacation despite being one of the 50 United States. That means U.S. citizens not only don’t need a passport to enter, but the islands are also easy to get to, with loads of direct and nonstop flights from all across the country. Hawaii has near-perfect summer-like weather all year long, making it the perfect tropical destination any time of year.

ALOHA STATE: 6 Hawaii family resorts that are nearly all-inclusive

Although there's no shortage of incredible family resorts in Hawaii , the idea of being able to have cultural experiences on-site is very appealing to me, because I always try to expose my family to the local culture wherever we go. In that sense, Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort on Oahu is a good choice for its immersive cultural experiences and gorgeous beachfront location. A stay at the resort includes access to a team of "Aunties" and cultural experts ready to "talk story" about Hawaiian history and culture. The resort also hosts performances by local Hawaiian musicians, holds Hula lesions, and offers traditional bamboo printmaking experiences. 

On Maui, the Wailea Beach Resort − Marriott, Maui is the place to stay if you want to be as close as possible to the island’s golden-sand beaches. Your family will love the resort's four distinct pools, including Hawaii’s longest resort waterslide. The resort also features a game room and arcade, family-friendly dining, watersports and plenty of cultural events. 

On the Big Island, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is a great choice. The resort features cultural activities and has a strong focus on giving back to the residents of Hawaii. Kids will love the infinity pool, waterslide and water sports. There's also a heated children’s pool for the little ones. 

The easiest passport-free tropical destination for most Americans to reach is sunny Florida. Much of the state has tropical weather all year long. The Sunshine State also boasts resorts that rival those found on the Caribbean islands . Key West, Marco Island, and Orlando are just a couple of Florida destinations well worth a visit. 

My family is partial to Orlando because it has a good mix of resorts with fantastic on-site pools and activities. Hanging out poolside is a great way to enjoy Florida’s tropical weather, and we enjoy the town’s amusement parks . The beaches of Key West are also a personal favorite and, like much of the state, make for great family beach vacations .

FLORIDA FUN: 7 best Florida all-inclusive resorts for families

In Orlando, my family loves the JW Marriott Grande Lakes . The hotel’s lazy river and epic waterslides are the perfect complement to Florida’s tropical weather. The JW Marriott Bonnett Creek is another great choice. A highlight of a stay here for my family was that my kids got to enjoy the hotel's kids club, complete with a rooftop climbing wall, mini-golf course and playground, while I enjoyed an adult dinner and drinks.  

In Key West, just 90 miles from Cuba, the Havana Cabana is a fun family hotel with daily pool parties, poolside popsicles and complimentary snacks in the lobby. This hotel has the largest pool in Key West, so there's plenty of room for everyone to splash the day away. 

3. Closed-loop cruises

Many closed-loop cruises don't require U.S. passports. Closed-loop cruises begin and end at the same port within the United States and stay solely within the Western Hemisphere. For example, if your cruise starts and ends in Miami with a stop in the Bahamas, it is probably a closed-loop cruise. 

Even on a closed-loop trip, some form of government identification will be required to board the cruise ship and to go on land excursions, but it doesn’t have to be a passport. For example, birth certificates for children might be acceptable. It’s important to check with your cruise line before booking to make sure that you have documentation that will be accepted for your cruise. 

FAMILY CRUISES: Kids sail free on these 7 family-friendly cruise lines

While a closed-loop cruise may seem like an attractive option, it’s important to know the risks. If anyone in your family becomes sick and needs to seek medical care off the ship or if you need to leave a cruise early, you may find yourself in big trouble and unable to respond appropriately without valid passports. This is not a risk I would take with my family, but it is an option for those with a higher risk tolerance than me. 

Most major family cruise lines have some closed-loop routes, including Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line . It’s extremely important to verify both that your cruise is closed-loop and what type of documentation you need before booking if you won’t have a valid passport at the time of sailing. 

4. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)

Americans can access three U.S. Virgin Islands without a passport. Traveling around the USVI is easy because most residents speak English and the islands use the U.S. dollar as their official currency. And especially for East Coast families like mine, any of the U.S. Virgin Islands are easier to get to than Hawaii.

St. Croix is the most far-flung USVI, and it feels like a different world. The island isn't full of large resorts, which makes it a good choice if your family prefers to get out instead of lounging at the pool every day. St. Croix is home to fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling, though, plus four national parks, mangrove estuaries accessible only by kayak, sugar plantations and a historic downtown. You might be particularly interested in visiting St. Croix for a nighttime bioluminescence tour in Salt River Bay, one of only seven full-time bioluminescent bays worldwide.

Stay at the Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort , the first hotel built and operated by a St. Croix family. A building has stood on the land since 1653 and The Buccaneer has operated as a hotel since 1922. The hotel has family cottage suites and lots of activities for kids, including complimentary water sports, a private beach stocked with games, and beach toys. It also hosts local musicians, traditional fire dancers and Caribbean stilt walkers.

5. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)

St. John is also part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and more than 60% of the island is a protected part of the national park system. I visited St. John when my son was an infant and I was taken aback by the island's beauty. I'm anxious to return now that my children are older and can engage in more activities.

Exploring the St. John national park is a highlight of any visit. Trunk Bay is a gorgeous beach, and Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail is an easy and kid-friendly introduction to snorkeling and spotting marine life. On St. John, you can also hike through a tropical forest to the ruins of a sugar mill, with a short side trail bringing you to see petroglyphs that are more than 1,000 years old. 

I have two recommendations for where to stay on St. John. If ocean views, a pool and easy access to the beach are your priority, consider Morningstar Buoy Haus Beach Resort . If you'd prefer to be immersed in St. John's tropical national park, book a stay at Cinnamon Bay Beach and Campground . The campground is in the heart of the park and even has simple cabins for tent-averse people like me. 

6. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)

Just a short ferry ride from St. John is St. Thomas, which makes it simple to hit two of the three U.S. Virgin Islands on the same trip. When I took the ferry on a previous visit, the ride lasted about 20 minutes each way and was a fun part of the experience. Charlotte Amalie, the pastel-colored capital of the USVI, is on St. Thomas.

It's great for shopping, but your family may be more interested in visiting the Pirate Treasure Museum . There's also loads of pristine beaches and plenty of opportunities for hiking, snorkeling and kayaking here, but I'd recommend staying on St. John and making a day trip of St. Thomas. That way you get to visit two tropical islands in one go without ever having to switch hotels. 

7. Puerto Rico

My favorite family vacations involve a mix of adventure and relaxation, and that's exactly what you get in Puerto Rico. You don't need a passport to visit, but if you've never been there, then that's more of a perk than the whole reason to go. When we talk about Puerto Rico, many people assume it's just one island, but actually it's an archipelago comprising more than 140 islands, of which Puerto Rico (the island itself) is the largest.

Puerto Rico has it all: big cities, tranquil beaches and plenty of history. Historic Old San Juan is full of colorful Spanish buildings, two centuries-old forts, and an arts district. By night, Vieques' Mosquito Bay glows an incredible shade of blue thanks to the bioluminescent organisms that live in the bay. Vieques is one of the offshore islands, easily accessible by ferry as a day trip. Another highlight of Puerto Rico is El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Park system. 

Stay at Caribe Hilton in San Juan, where the kids will delight at the property's peacocks, underwater helmet diving, on-site playground, secluded beach, oceanfront swimming pools and on-site water activities. Interested families can become a Manatee Caretaker for a Day at the resort’s manatee conservation center. The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico is another family-friendly hotel option and has been named by FamilyVacationist as one of the best resorts in the world for multigenerational family vacations . It has El Yunque as a backdrop and boasts three pools, including a children’s pool and a huge lagoon-style pool.  

8. American Samoa

American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States that sits in the South Pacific. The chain of five islands sits about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. Its remote location makes American Samoa difficult for most mainland Americans to access, but because Hawaii is the closest point in the United States to American Samoa, it's feasible to add a trip to American Samoa onto a trip to Hawaii if you have an extended period of time to travel.

Those who do make it deep into the South Pacific are rewarded with a passport-free tropical vacation rich in Polynesian culture. Believed to be home to the oldest Polynesian culture in the region, American Samoa is a fantastic place to learn about the traditional Polynesian way of life. The National Park of American Samoa is a draw, too. It features fruit bats, a coral reef and a World War II heritage trail.

There aren’t many hotels in American Samoa, but the Tradewinds Hotel is one of the nicest. It’s a good base for exploring the beaches and jungles of American Samoa. The hotel has a pool and easy beach access. 

Guam is a small U.S. territory in Micronesia in the Western Pacific. It has a tropical climate, but before planning a trip be aware of the island’s long rainy season from July to December (dry season is roughly January to June ). Guam's size means nowhere on the island is too far away. By some measures, it's home to the largest mountain in the world, Mount Lamlam. Families who visit can hang out at the beach, dive and enjoy the island's warm culture.

Guam also has several family-friendly resorts and hotels. The Hilton Guam Resort and Spa has a private beach and multiple pools. The Hyatt Regency Guam has three pools, waterslides and plenty of aquatic games. 

10. Northern Mariana Islands

Just north of Guam in the Western Pacific lie the 22 Northern Mariana Islands. They're a Commonwealth of the United States, so American citizens can visit any of the islands without a passport. Of all the islands, Saipan draws the most tourists and is where most of the permanent residents of the Northern Mariana Islands live.

You can visit Saipan’s beaches, dive or snorkel in Saipan’s legendary crystal-clear blue waters at the Grotto, take a day trip to Bird Island or Forbidden Island, or spend your days playing water sports on one of the islands' many beaches. A Carnival cruise ship rescued 27 Cuban nationals found adrift and signalling for help roughly 20 miles west of Cuba this weekend. 

The small wooden boat was in visibly poor condition, fitted with a makeshift sail and crowded with passengers, video shared with Fox 13 shows. 

The cruise ship's bridge team turned around the Carnival Paradise on its route from Tampa to Roatan, Honduras to rescue the Cubans around 2:30 pm. Sunday.

All 27 passengers were taken aboard, fed and checked by medical personnel, the outlet reported. 

Roatan officials and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West were notified. Neither the Coast Guard sector nor Carnival Cruise Line could immediately be reached for comment.

The ship's itinerary was not impacted, the liner wrote in a press release, and cruise-goers will reach Roatan's Mahogany Bay today on schedule. Before returning to port in Tampa on April 25, the ship is scheduled to stop in Cozumel, Mexico on April 23.

This wasn't the first rescue carried out by the more than 70,000 ton ship, Travel and Tour World reported. A sailor was saved by the liner's crew in 2019, and 20 stranded individuals were taken onto the ship in two separate 2022 incidents near Cuba , the outlet reported.

Carnival cruise ship from Florida helps boat with Cuban migrants in distress

TAMPA, Fla. — A Carnival cruise from Florida turned from a leisure trip to a rescue operation.

The Carnival Paradise left Tampa on Saturday on a five-day cruise from Tampa to Honduras.

Crew members spotted a boat on Sunday filled with people who were signaling for help.

Carnival says they notified the U.S. Coast Guard, and everyone was given food and medical attention.

The only song in Taylor Swift's discography to include three exclamation points, "Florida!!!" is one of two collaborations on "The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift teams up with Florence + The Machine for Track 8. Swift's dad, Scott, told fans in Florida, the song about the state was his favorite off the album. Cue the drums, bum-bum-bum-bum-bum.

“Florida!!!” is “one hell of a drug.”

The suspense-filled track builds in the verse until the chorus punches like an exclamation point (or three) bursting from the drums. The song mentions a timeshare in Destin, a northwest city located near Pensacola on the panhandle tip of the state. The area is known as a tourist destination because of Gulf of Mexico beaches, golf courses and resorts. 

Although it seems like a retreat, the song wraps the sunny paradise in looming darkness tissue paper and stuffs it in a hurricane-sized bag. Welch sings about hoping a natural disaster will come and wash her away. “Barricaded in the bathroom with a bottle of wine. Well, me and my ghosts, we had a hell of a time.”

If you didn't get the memo from the department's Chairman, "Tortured Poets" is Swift's 11th era album with 16 tracks and four bonus songs (four versions of the album each have a different bonus track).

Swift announced the project at the Grammys, when she won her 13th career Grammy for pop album of the year. Post Malone and Florence and The Machine  are two contributors on the pop album.

Its track titles are brutal. Fans speculated the album was about Swift’s six-year relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and their breakup. Both stars kept the relationship out of the public eye. The back of the first version of the album reads, “I love you, it’s ruining me,” serving as a dagger-to-the-chest harbinger.

The album was released during Swift's two-month break from her massively popular and economically fruitful Eras Tour . "Tortured Poets" serves as an exclamation point to the behemoth success the billionaire has seen over the past year since the three-plus-hour show launched in Glendale, Arizona. Swift will return to the stage in Paris, France, on May 9. Fans anticipate that her newest era will be added to the show.

Cruise ship rescues migrants on small wooden boat signaling for help

A massive Carnival cruise ship turned around and rescued more than two dozen Cuban nationals after seeing them signaling from help from a small wooden boat.

The boat was adrift in bad condition with a makeshift sail when crew aboard the Carnival Paradise spotted it about 20 miles west of Cuba on Sunday, reported Fox News .

Cruise crew veered off their route from Tampa, Florida , to Roatan, Honduras, and pulled all 27 Cubans on board at roughly 2.30pm.

The Cubans were all examined by medics on board and provided with food.

Cruise staff notified the US Coast Guar Sector Key West.

Despite the detour, the cruise reached its port at Mahogany Bay in Roatan on time, stated Carnival. The cruise is set to make another stop to Cozumel, Mexico , on Tuesday before returning to Tampa on Thursday.

It was not immediately known if the Cuban nationals stayed or are staying on board until the cruise reaches Florida or whether they disembarked at a port.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard spotted another makeshift boat near the Key West shoreline and took in 16 migrants who were repatriated back to Cuba.

‘The Coast Guard’s primary mission is to preserve human life at sea,’ stated Coast Guard Seventh District Lt Matthew Miller. ‘The maritime environment is inherently dangerous. The Coast Guard and our HSTF-SE partners are committed to preventing unsafe voyages at sea and enforcing US immigration laws and regulations.

‘Do not take to the sea.’

The Carnival Paradise incident was not the only out-of-the-ordinary event involving a cruise ship recently.

Last week, a pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship was airlifted by a US Coast Guard helicopter when she began experiencing medical complications. Drone footage showed a Coast Guard crew member being lowered down to the front of the cruise and securing the woman to a rescue basket. She was lifted up and brought into the chopper safely.
