The Alps Tour 2024 starts from Suez, Egypt

The 2024 Alps Tour season kicks off as usual in Egypt with the Ein Bay Open, the first of three events in the Winter Series, within the framework of a 13-event calendar, taking place from February 20th to 22nd at the Sokhna GC (Course A&B) in Suez.

Alps Tour, results

A total of 120 competitors from 21 nations, including Cameroon, Estonia, Morocco, Slovenia, and Venezuela, will be competing. Among them are 29 Italian players, including Jacopo Vecchi Fossa, Filippo Bergamaschi, Enrico Di Nitto, Edoardo Raffaele Lipparelli, Andrea Romano, Andrea Saracino, and Cristiano Terragni, as well as three winners from last year's tournaments: Manfredi Manica (Aravel Golf Open), Gianmaria Rean Trinchero (Fred Olsen Alps de La Gomera), and Giovanni Manzoni (Qualifying Tour 2023, Final Stage).

However, there are also many others capable of making their mark. The field includes Spanish players Mario Galiano Aguilar, Manuel Morugan, and José Manuel Pardo Benitez, French players Benjamin Kedochim, Paul Margolis, and Franck Medale, Irish player Paul McBride, and Swiss player Luca Galliano.

The prize money amounts to 40,000 euros, with the winner taking home 5,800 euros. The Suez Canal on the Mediterranean Sea and Suez (al-Suways) on the Red Sea. It cuts through the isthmus of Suez, allowing direct navigation from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, without the need to circumnavigate Africa via the Atlantic Ocean along the Cape of Good Hope route.

The canal extends from the northern terminus of Port Said to the southern terminus of Port Tewfik in the city of Suez. Its length is 193.30 kilometers (120.11 miles), including the northern and southern approach channels. In 2020, over 18,500 vessels transited the canal (an average of 51.5 per day).

The canal was inaugurated on November 17, 1869, and was constructed by the Frenchman Ferdinand de Lesseps based on the design of the Italian engineer Luigi Negrelli, who was of Austrian nationality. It consists of two sections, north and south of the Bitter Lakes.

The construction lasted for 10 years and involved cooperation among many European nations, with France providing the largest contribution. The original canal was single-lane, with passing points at the Ballah bypass and the Great Bitter Lake.

According to Negrelli's plans, it was not supposed to contain lock systems so that seawater could flow freely. Generally, the water in the canal north of the Bitter Lakes flows northward in winter and southward in summer. South of the lakes, the current changes with the tide from the Red Sea.

In 2014, the Egyptian government initiated works to expand and extend the Ballah bypass by 35 kilometers (22 miles) to expedite canal transit time. The expansion aimed to nearly double the Suez Canal's capacity, increasing from 49 to 97 ships per day.

At a cost of 59.4 billion Egyptian pounds ($9 billion), the project was financed through investment certificates issued exclusively to Egyptian entities and individuals. The "New Suez Canal," as the expansion was dubbed, was inaugurated with a ceremony on August 6, 2015.

The Suez Canal Authority officially opened the new lateral canal in 2016. This lateral canal, located on the north side of the eastern extension of the Suez Canal, serves the East Terminal for vessel docking and unloading from the terminal.

Before the construction of the new lateral canal, it was not possible to berth or disengage ships at the terminal while a convoy was underway, as the East Container Terminal is located directly on the canal itself.

At la gomera, following on brooks koepka’s footsteps.

July 8th, 2019 – La Gomera (Canary Islands, Spain) – It is a crucial moment for the Alps Tour players: with only three tournaments to go before the Grand Final, they will have to give their best now to reach their different goals, according to their expectations. It could be getting one of the 6 spots to be admitted directly to Stage 2 of the European Tour Qualifying School (for the top 6 in the ranking as at 21st August 2019); or maybe getting into the top 50 before the Grand Final , so that they can be granted a full Alps Tour category for 2020 and don’t have to go back to our Qualifying School in December – and in order to having a chance to be among the top 50, they need to have played at least 6 tournaments in 3 different countries during the 2019 season; or they might be aiming to the very top, that is, trying to reach the top 5 in the ranking after the Grand Final and gain category 13 in the Challenge Tour .

So, there’s a lot at stake, and Tecina Golf is ready to take the challenge, after hosting a Challenge Tour event for eight years – the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana from 2009 to 2016 – and a very famous winner, present World Number 1 Brooks Koepka who in 2013 returned a spectacular -24, 10 strokes better than the players on second place, and a few years later would go on claiming 4 Majors.

With Frédéric Lacroix already promoted to the Challenge Tour after his third win of the season, last week in the St. Malo Mixed Open , some of his closest opponents will try to climb up some precious positions or to consolidate their spots, like Austrian Timon Baltl (n. 4 in the ranking) winner of Gosser Open, and Italian Enrico Di Nitto (5 th ), or Frenchman Xavier Poncelet (8 th ), Italian Federico Maccario (9 th ) and Austrian Lukas Nemecz (10 th ), winner last March in Egypt and eager to go back to Challenge Tour where he competed last year.

Tecina Golf will be the perfect set for this new golfing adventure: located on the hill of Lomada de Tecina, the course overlooks the blue ocean waters. In the words of its designer, leading British architect and writer Donald Steel , it is “the most exciting and challenging project I have ever designed and built. It is unusual because you have to climb up to the first teeing ground, and then it is downhill all the way. The views are amazing”.

The 18 Tecina Golf holes overlooking the sea measure a total of 6,343 metres from the white tees, and it is a par 71 golf course. Fairways and greens are surrounded by a profusion of native Canary Islands vegetation, such as Canary Island spurge cactus and tabaiba shrubs, and trees bearing such fruits as banana, avocado and mango, each giving off its characteristic aroma.

Promoted by JGolf18.0 , the 2 nd edition of Fred. Olsen Alps de la Gomera can count on Fred. Olsen SA as title sponsor and on other sponsors like Promotur Turismo de Canarias , Cabildo Insular de La Gomera , Real Federación Española de Golf , Federación Canaria de Golf and with the support of Consejo Superior de Deportes and Kyocera .

Spain Golf – The Alps Tour 2023 will come to Spain

Palomarejos Golf. Palomarejos will be the first Spanish stage of the Alps Tour 2023

Palomarejos Golf will be the first Spanish stage of the Alps Tour 2023

The 22nd Alps Tour season will have three important tests being held in Spain: the Alps de Las Castillas, the Alps of Andalusia, and the Fred. Olsen Alps de La Gomera, where the 5 players who will be able to play the Challenge Tour next year will be determined.

“We believe that the Alps Tour is a circuit in which you learn to compete and much more, to prepare, to manage, to travel, and so on, and the careers of these great players bear that up”, says Jaime Salaverri, president of the RFEG Professionals Committee.

The Alps de las Castillas, the first Spanish stop on the Alps Tour, will be held at Palomarejos Golf , in Talavera de la Reina.

“There have been excellent players who have gone on to succeed worldwide from the 11 years of partnership between the Castilla La Mancha and Castilla León Federations”, states the host president, Carlos Gutiérrez.

The Alps Tour will then head to Isla Canela Links in May to celebrate the Alps of Andalusia.

“The Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFAG) maintains its support for the Alps Tour not only to see the emergence of the great golf stars, but also to attract young players to the golf courses of Andalusia , where there is much more to do than golf and they like it”, said Pablo Mansilla, the president of the federation.

“After 12 years of backing the Alps Tour, the RFAG is happy with the outcomes”, concluded Pablo Mansilla.

The Fred. Olsen Alps of La Gomera at Tecina Golf , in the Canary Islands , is the third and final Spanish event.

“Our journey has witnessed the beginning of great players worldwide and we continue to bet on professional golf. Whoever wins at Tecina Golf is going to have a great career ahead of them”, says Cousins Pusnik, Fred. Olsen’s asset manager and director of Tecina Golf.

On April 19–22, Palomarejos Golf will host the Alps de Las Castillas, while on June 14–17, Isla Canela Links will host the Alps de Andalusia. Finally, on July 12–15, Tecina Golf will host the Alps of La Gomera. All of them will have the support of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.

La Gomera circumnavigation (GR-132/GR-131) – Our stages

1: San Sebastian to Vegaipala (18,5km)

The start of the first GR 132 stage of our La Gomera hike was around 12:30 p.m. It led us from the harbor through the town of San Sebastian. The path begins inconspicuously behind the refinery, straight up and continues along the southwestern coast past the Christ Cross. We hike a few kilometers on the GR 132. Playa de La Guancha lies isolated from here further into the Barranco Juan de Vera valley. Another climb through a “desolate” terraced slope, the sun is relentless.

The black beach sparkles below

Looking back, we always saw the black beach and passed the old hamlet of Morales in the afternoon. There are some abandoned houses here. We left the GR-132 and followed the hiking trail number 28 to reach the town of Berruga at an altitude of 800 m. A particularly beautiful rest area, meadow and palm trees, unfortunately no water, but would be perfect for camping. Here we meet the road GM-3. This road leads through a valley. After 2 km of asphalt you reach the town of Vegaipala . Our overnight destination is Casa Rural La Palizada.

alps tour la gomera

2: Vegaipala to La Playa (23,4 km)

We really enjoyed this beautiful accommodation, Casa Rural La Palizada. Just behind the house the path went uphill. There were several highlights waiting for us on this second La Gomera stage. After about an hour we reached the Los Roques rock circus on a slight climb. A trademark of La Gomera is the Roque de Agando with a height of 1077 m. The Garajonay National Park begins here.

Nationalparc Garajonay

alps tour la gomera

This section is one of the most popular routes on the island. We continue hiking here on the GR-131 towards the highest peak on La Gomera. This is the Alto de Garajonay with a height of 1487m. The national park is often shrouded in fog. Together with the old laurel forest, a mystical atmosphere took over us. We could hear a lot of birds. We stayed on the GR-131 towards Chipude . On our hike we soon passed through the highest village in La Gomera, Igualero . Framed by huge pines and tabaibas, there are large isolated pine trees that flow together with the magnificent landscape.

The old canal accompanies us into Valle Gran Rey

After another hour we reached Chipude. Here we were finally able to stop at a bar with a supermarket. In Chipude we left the GR 131 and followed trail number 15 to La Matanza . The so-called canal path begins here. The path runs partly inside and partly next to the old “canal” (without water). On the way we kept seeing small reservoirs (no drinking water). From here we followed the hiking trail in a southerly direction and then after a short while came to the GR-132 coastal circular route. Now we went steadily downhill through the wonderful Valle Gran Rey valley. The last steep section of the path zigzags across the terraced fields to the village of La Calera and further to the sea to La Playa .

3: La Playa to Vallehermoso (24 km)

La Playa has retained the feel of a former fishing village. A sunny harbor town with bars and cafes, along a promenade and everything is very tranquil. We had booked a comfortable, quiet apartment near the beach. In the morning we went up the plateau, which was quite a few meters in altitude. Riscos de La Merica, the well-known viewpoint and up on the plateau along the Camino La Merica with a wide view of the Atlantic. Lunch break in Arure, opportunity to stop for a break in the restaurant. There was the local specialty goat meat. From the town center, a leisurely climb along an asphalt forest road towards Las Hayas.

A spectacle of fog and trees

Here the GR 131 (crossing the island) took us again through the Parque Nacional de Garajonay – where we encounter an impressive spectacle of fog and forest. The high humidity creates atmospheric mist that swirls around the moss-covered trees. Shortly after crossing a street you reach the picnic area “Raso de la Bruma”. Here we hike downhill straight to Vallehermoso . The descent is steep and rocky. Shortly after leaving the laurel forest, Vallehermoso lies at our feet in the sunshine – a fantastic view. Day’s stage completed. Our accommodation sits above the center, the impressive Hotel Anaterve in Vallehermoso .

accomodation-Vallehermoso

4: Vallehermoso to Agulo (16 km)

We didn’t hike to the beach in the morning, but followed the Camino, just behind the town center through old orchards, a few meters up towards Tamargada. When we reached the hill, we walked impressively along old terraced paths, past isolated houses. On this La Gomera GR-132 stage we combine the GR-132 and local paths (see map ). The fresh green of the banana plants, palm trees and cacti, and the tropical vegetation in general, frame this beautiful corner of the island. The wind drives the clouds in front of it, occasionally a bright sky, which conveys peace for the soul and body. In the afternoon arrival in Agulo . Agulo is one of the most authentic villages in La Gomera.

The Feast of San Marcos

The festival of San Marcos is a very old tradition that is celebrated on April 24th and the special thing is jumping over the fire. In front of the church, along the street, a series of fires made entirely of juniper wood are arranged in a row, with some distance between them. All participants have the opportunity to skip it as a thank you to the saint, the patron saint of the community.

From the village of Agulo, this GR-132 stage goes steeply up to the Mirador de Abrante viewpoint, one of the highlights of La Gomera with breathtaking views. We were guests in a room in Casa Particular with breakfast on a balcony facing the Atlantic and Tenerife. Great location with a warm, friendly host who makes his own jam and listened to good music.

5: Agulo to Hermigua (17 km)

For the route to Hermigua we chose the GR-132 variant for hiking along the sea. Past huge rock faces, over terraces and the Atlantic Ocean with its washed-out black stones is within reach. Here we have the most wonderful views of the Teide . Playa de la Caleta is suitable for windsurfing and we watch the athletes and the spectacle for a while. However, you should be aware that the conditions are not for beginners. Palm trees and banana plants sway in a light breeze.

alps tour la gomera

A History of the Island – Hermigua

Once we arrived Hermigua our destination is the church square. This is the origin of Hermigua, which dates back to 1598. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the monastery flourished and received donations from the richest families, but in the 19th the monastery fell into decline and was closed. The church became the property of the diocese, everything was offered for sale and became private property. Then and until the 40s of the last century the area fell into obscurity and thanks to the neighbors the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was consecrated as a parish church. We stayed at Casa Bayoll, it is a traditional Canarian house with history, around 400 years old.

6: Hermigua to San Sebastian (17 km)

The twin rocks of Hermigua , Pedro (the largest) and Petra (the smallest), or Roque Grande (160m) and Roque Chico (80m) – as they are also called – characterize the valley of Hermigua, especially its highest part, the Valle Alto . These emblematic symbols of nature in La Gomera are the subject of a beautiful legend in the popular imagination.

alps tour la gomera

On this La Gomera stage we continue to follow the GR-132. In the morning we hike up to the Embalse Mulagua reservoir, past Las Casas and wind our way towards Paqué Natural de Majona . The path climbs steadily through the slope and we reach a nice rest area near a pine forest. Here it became sporty again until we reached the height of the ridge and ran curve after curve on the other side of the pass via Lomo Fragoso to San Sebastian . Always along the Barranco de la Villa riverbed, with the GM 1 piste road above in view, past a few towns, many kilometers on a never-ending country road. In the afternoon we reached the center of San Sebastian and booked an overnight stay in a hotel at the Plaza de la Constitucion with the former customs house.

Walking in La Gomera: The Best Routes For Your Walking Holidays

La Gomera is not a secret for enthusiasts anymore, but thankfully the island still is not on the radar of the mass tourist. No all-in hotels, no fighting over beach chairs and no fish 'n chips. This is La Gomera, the green pearl of the Canary Islands, loved by hippies, hikers, and connoisseurs of the good Canarian life.

If you already went hiking in Tenerife , you will have seen La Gomera from a distance. The quirky little island floats off the coast of its bigger brother, so to speak, and in the shape of a ferry, this green gem is attracting more and more people who want something different. Tenerife is perfect as a beach and walking holiday, but La Gomera offers just that little bit more hiking and when you understand why you won't even go looking for a beach. In our blog post, we introduce you to the best hiking routes and take your first steps into a hiking paradise.

Walking in La Gomera: What and Where?

La gomera’s unique language: whistling, the best season for walking in la gomera, walking in la gomera: map and navigation, the 7 best routes for walking in la gomera, 1. looping la gomera: gr132, 2. all the highlights of la gomera: gr131, 3. to the summit: alto de garajonay, 4. going deep: barranco de guarimiar, 5. short but feisty: la fortaleza de chipude, 6. on the diving board: mirador abrante, 7. best for last: la mérica in valle gran rey, packing list for the canary islands, getting to and from la gomera, safety tips for the canary islands, where can i book the canary islands.

We already mentioned the beaches. Of course, you'll find them on La Gomera too. Unlike on other Canary Islands, you won't easily find huge collections of beach chairs here. What you do find here are hippies of all generations banging their drums, especially before sunset. The history of this takes us all the way back to American hippies who literally crossed the ocean to escape military duty. Los Americanos, as they were known on the calm little island, were welcomed with open arms and the years that followed soon became legendary. Parties and more hippies hearing about the island meant that the culture soon became part of the island.

The culture was naturally accompanied by a passion for the outdoors. You will find this on La Gomera, dubbed La Isla Redonda because of its round shape, by the bucketful. La Gomera has a network of more than 600 kilometres of hiking trails. There are trails of all shapes and flavours and of varying degrees of difficulty for those who like to challenge themselves; from hoary GR routes, mystical jungle trails; and hiking trails with constant views of that endless ocean. Tenerife is known for its eternal spring, but of course, you'll find this in La Gomera too. Here you can go all year round for a good shot of endorphins.

Walking in La Gomera: What and Where?

GR131/GR132 La Gomera with Luggage Transport

It is clear that communication and logistics in La Gomera are not exactly easy. High peaks, deep valleys and gorges, it does complicate a few things. On La Gomera, a special language has emerged over the centuries: Silbo Gomero. This whistled language takes us all the way back to the ancient Guanches, and thus existed before the conquistadores took the island in the 16th century. The language was adapted to Spanish in the 17th, and although it was barely in use at point in history, it is fanatically used as a language today and is even a compulsory subject at school on La Gomera.

During your hikes on La Gomera, you cannot miss the fantastic sounds of the silbadors, as Silbo Gomero 'speakers' are called. Silbo Gomero is not only used between Gomerans themselves; visitors to the island also have the opportunity to become accustomed to the whistle language, this in the shape of small workshops offered especially in restaurants.

Although you can visit La Gomera all year round, even in winter, there is a best and most popular season for hiking holidays on this island. This is completely in line with the other Canary Islands and even applies to Madeira. The islands owe this fantastic climate to their geographical location and the Gulf Stream. In geographic spring and autumn, as far as you have them at that latitude, you will hike most finely on La Gomera.

Because in many places it can get too hot in summer and too cold in winter, these months are less suitable for an active holiday. In spring and autumn, on the other hand, you can expect many hours of sunshine and a pleasant breeze. There are absolutely no thick rain clouds, so you can safely leave your umbrella at home. Like Tenerife, for example, La Gomera can be a bit chilly in the north, so a jacket or jumper is still recommended.

La Gomera has been an absolute hiking paradise for decades. You are therefore going to find many travel and especially hiking guides about this special island. You will certainly not be the first to make your way along the fantastic trails of eternal spring. But where do you start? Later in this blog, you will find a selection of the very best hiking trails on La Gomera. Below you'll find an overview map of La Gomera giving you an idea of what's where. Although La Gomera has its own airport, you do have to go to busier Tenerife first to get there most easily. In the map, you'll see a few key hiking destinations indicated.

Walking in La Gomera: Map and Navigation

The hippies we mentioned earlier, some never returned home and have made La Gomera their new forever home. The island, however small, therefore has a lot to offer. Countless guidebooks and blogs have been written about La Gomera's extraordinary nature and hiking trails. As we already described, La Gomera has more than 600 kilometres of trails, so it's pretty easy to know what you should at least have done or what is possible. Vamos!

It doesn't get much better than the GR132 on La Gomera. At Bookatrekking.com, we are anything but unfamiliar with the phenomenon of GRs, Grande Randonnées in French. GR footpaths can be found all over Europe, and although it sounds fabulous in French, it really is 'just' a Long Distance Footpath. Tougher GR trails are the GR20 on Corsica , GR57 Tour du Mont Thabor in France and, also in Spain, the GR221 on Mallorca . GR132 on La Gomera circles the whole island and guarantees a huge adventure. Steep slopes, dense laurel forests and here and there you feel like you're on Mars.

The GR132 is no small feat. The full circuit counts, say, 140 kilometres and comes with more than 7000 metres of altitude. The stages are arranged so that you always walk through a small settlement, but La Gomera is no Tenerife and the villages are small and availability in accommodation is not always guaranteed. Wild camping is actually not allowed but is tolerated on the GR132 in places. Although the GR132 is the pinnacle and we can't really imagine a better way to explore the island, its smaller brother, the GR131 is a bit more suitable for a walking holiday without further ado. More on that in the next chapter.

1. Looping La Gomera: GR132

Some of the same excitement and beauty as on the GR132 but with more accommodation options and easier logistics. That's the GR131, basically the GR route that draws a line across all the Canary Islands. So, how does that work? A point-to-point walk on each of the 7 islands. These are not all equally popular and it's no surprise that the GR131 on La Gomera stands out head and shoulders above the other options. The route, which can be divided into four stages, is great for self-guided hiking and over the years it has attracted more and more hikers to the island. It also combines well with part of the GR132.

The hike starts directly in San Sebastian, the capital of La Gomera. From here you walk via Degollada de Peraza, the highest point of La Gomera Alto de Garajonay and Chipude to the beach Playa de Vallehermoso. Unlike the GR132, which goes around the island, the GR131 cuts the island in half, so to speak. With San Sebastian, Chipude and Vallehermoso you have fine bases for accommodation on this route. You can then extend the route with part of the GR132 and end up back in San Sebastian.

2. All the Highlights of La Gomera: GR131

It doesn't get any higher than Alto de Garajonay on La Gomera. You'll find this 1,529-metre peak in the National Park of the same name, which fits on a huge collection of ideal routes for day trips. From the summit, you can see neighbouring Tenerife, with Pico del Teide, still more than twice as high as Garajonay. The lack of altitude makes up for this hike in the form of biodiversity. On Gran Ruta 18, as the circular hike to the summit is called, you walk through beautiful laurel forests. Keep going, though, because with 14 kilometres and more than 500 metres of altitude, the GR18 does take at least half a day.

At the top, you will find a replica of an ancient Guanchen ritual domain from the 6th century. The Guanches gathered here when they wanted to talk to their gods. It is also where the last free Guanches hid from the Spanish conquistadores during the rebellion in the late 15th century, before being captured and killed or sold as slaves.

3. To the Summit: Alto de Garajonay

High peaks, deep valleys. La Gomera, like the other Canary Islands, is volcanic. The valleys, or rather ravines, here are called barrancos. In Tenerife, for example, you have the famous Barranco de Masca, a huge tourist attraction. Barrancos have always created logistical challenges on the islands. After all, you have to go through them, over them, or, in most cases, around them. Awkward for the commuter, but an absolute magnet for hikers. Take, for example, the Barranco de Guarimiar, one of La Gomera's most beautiful barrancos.

During a hike in the Barranco de Guarimiar, you can easily be away from it all for more than 4 hours. Are you afraid of heights? Then leave those aside for now, because here you will find deep ravines, narrow paths and absolute solitude. The circular hike through the Barranco de Guarimiar starts and ends in the village of Imada. 600 metres to descend and, since you have to go back, 600 metres to climb back up again.

4. Going Deep: Barranco de Guarimiar

Like Alto de Garajonay, La Fortaleza de Chipude was an important place for the ancient Guanches. With a wide view on all corners, they could see danger coming from La Fortaleza and shelter from it: Fortaleza therefore means fortress. The mountain is a kind of Table Mountain of red basalt and as you start driving around the island, you see it again and again. There is a narrow path between the rocks from where you can get up to 1240 metres.

A climb is short, feisty and some scrambling and is always worthwhile. It gives you that same overview that the Guanches had, the views are magical. A good starting point for the 2-hour trek is the village of Chipude. While you're there, eat and drink at Victoria, one of the better local restaurants on the island.

5. Short but Feisty: La Fortaleza de Chipude

Might not be the first place you want to go when looking for a relaxing hiking holiday, and yet this attraction combines very well with an exhilarating hike. Whereas most tourists just drive up to the Mirador, you start in the lower village of Agulo and literally earn your views. A walk of say 7 kilometres and 500 metres altitude will take you to one of the Canary Islands' most extraordinary constructions.

The Mirador hangs like a diving board over the ravine and the glass floor provides that extra bit of adrenaline. Slightly touristy, but still really worth it. To top it off, you can get coffee and Gomeranian pastries. Great fuel to complete the hike back to Agulo.

6. On the Diving Board: Mirador Abrante

We already mentioned La Gomera's hippies. You will definitely find them in Valle Gran Rey, one of the popular corners of La Gomera. This, by the way, is without you having the idea that it has been squashed by tourism. Valle Gran Rey is home to some of La Gomera's most famous beaches, known for their fine black sand and blue waters. The two longest are the beaches of La Puntilla and La Calera, which are also very popular with divers. For surfers, the beach at El Charco de la Condesa is the place to be.

Of course, Valle Gran Rey also offers a sea of options for hikers. La Mérica, which rises grandly above the valley. The summit seems inaccessible from below but a unique trail from the 17th leads zig-zagging upwards. It is one of the most beautiful and panoramic routes on the island, offering different views at every turn. On fine days, you can see El Hierro and La Palma.

7. Best for Last: La Mérica in Valle Gran Rey

The most beautiful places on earth, you will not simply get there. That certainly applies to La Gomera. Although the quirky little island has its own airport, you really only get there with a transfer via the Spanish mainland. The shortest, fastest and most common approach is to arrive via its 'big brother' Tenerife. Tenerife has two airports, one in the north, aptly called Teneriffe Norte (TFN), and one in the south near Los Christianos, Tenerife-Sur (TFS). The northern airport is also known as Los Rodeos, the southern also as Reina Sofia. Tenerife is a popular holiday destination and so you can fly to eternal spring with ease from any airport. Multiple airlines like Easyjet, Rynair, WizzAir and Transavia offer flights from all over the continent.

Most airlines fly into Los Christianos (TFS), which is totally convenient for travelling to La Gomera. In fact, the ferry to San Sebastian also departs from this coastal town. The crossing takes about an hour and a half and can be easily arranged through Fred Olsen and Garajonay Express.

'It's a really big goal' - Geraint Thomas tests form at Tour of the Alps ahead of Giro-Tour double attempt

N early a year after losing the Giro d’Italia on the penultimate day, Geraint Thomas is gearing up for his return to the Italian Grand Tour at the Tour of the Alps after a more consistent preparation, without interruption from illness.

In 2023, Thomas’ early season was disrupted by a urinary tract infection (UTI) which prevented him from training regularly and the cause of which wasn’t worked out until spring.

“I’m feeling pretty good, slightly ahead of what I was last year. Well, I've certainly just had a more consistent preparation,” said Thomas at the pre-Tour of the Alps press conference in Neumarkt/Egna.

“Last year I had an issue with a urine infection from Christmas which kept me on and off the bike until we found out the real cause of it in March.

“This year has been a lot more consistent and obviously, I wouldn't say I’m a million miles better but I just feel like I’ve had a better run in, smoother.”

It’s been a slow build-up this time out for the Welshman with only 13 race days, but Thomas is raring to get stuck into competition after lots of time at altitude in the Sierra Nevada.

“I’m really looking forward to racing here, it’s ideal for the Giro,” Thomas said, “And I’m excited to race now because you can train all you want, but it’s good to race.”

Five tough days of racing around the hills and mountains in the South Tyrol region start today from Egna with Thomas seeing all the stages as possibilities for GC action alongside the tough queen stage 4 from Laives to Borgo Valsugana.

“I need to be ready to hit the ground running, I think it's always gonna be a super hard race and it seems quite punchy this year,” he said.

“I see the weather is supposed to get a bit worse but that’s all good prep for the Giro anyway. Just excited to get stuck in.”

Thomas isn’t the only strong GC hopeful preparing for the Giro d'Italia at the Tour of the Alps, with Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Hugh Carthy (EF Education EasyPost), Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), Filippo Zana (Jayco AlUla) and Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious) also here.

Last year’s winner Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek) isn’t present, however, and Thomas sees it as a very open competition in the absence of one of the best climbing superstars Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).

“I just think it's open, a lot of good guys here, strong teams. It will be a super hard race to win and hopefully enjoyable,” he said.

“Without the so-called big - however many you want to put in that bracket, two, three, four, whatever - obviously it's a bit more open so we’ll see what happens.”

As he heard mid-press conference that teammate Tom Pidcock had won the Amstel Gold Race , Thomas echoed his feelings about doing the Giro-Tour de France double that it was “getting him out of bed every day” and keeping things exciting in his 18th year.

“To be honest, I just wanted to do something different as it's my 18th year as a professional and I need to keep mixing it up a bit to keep the enjoyment and just something to keep me on my toes, rather than just getting a bit monotonous,” Thomas said of the double attempt which will see him take on Pogačar at both.

“It's a really big goal and I think to be at my best in both is a tough challenge so we’ll see how it goes.

“At the start of the year, I thought I’d try to go a bit more steady in the build-up because I didn't want to be flying in March and have to try and hold onto that til July, and I think Tom Pidcok might have won Amstel - sound, that’s a good result.”

Luckily during the afternoon some wind picked up which helped handle the unusually high temperatures and humidity. Play began at 7:30 this morning from both the 1 st and 10 th hole.

Round 2 Player Quotes-

Julien Paltrinieri , Italian amateur who was in a two-way tie for 2 nd place yesterday, holds a one stroke lead after 36 holes. He followed his opening-round of 8 under-par, with a 6 under-par in the second round for a two-day total of 14 under-par. He made 7 birdies today and a single bogey during his round. After his round, Julien was very pleased with his result and commented: “I teed off at 7:30 this morning and the course was a bit wet early on making it slightly longer. However, there was less wind compared to yesterday afternoon which made it easier to hit shots into the green. Today was also very humid which made it feel just as hot as my round yesterday afternoon. I’m very happy, I struggled slightly on the front nine but my short game kept me together and I putted well on the back. I was hoping for another bogey-free round, but the only bogey I made was due to a 3putt.” He went on to explain that once he graduates from his master program, he will then consider turning pro. For tomorrow, he wants to “stick to my routine and focus on each shot.”

Round 1 leader, 28 years old, Spain’s Alex Esmatges followed with a 4 under-par in round 2 and sits just one stroke off the lead at 13 under-par entering tomorrow’s final round. He is playing in his 5 th Alps Tour event of the season. In today’s round, Alex made four birdies on the front nine holes to go out in 33 and then a steady 1 bogey, 1 birdie on the back nine to sign for a 68. He is looking forward to tomorrow’s final round being patient and playing with a “similar strategy, hit fairways and greens to leave myself the best putts possible for birdie and see what will happen at the end of the round.”

Italy’s Gregorio De Leo , 22 years old, is the current Order of Merit Leader as well as a two-time winner thus far this season. He followed his opening round of 8 under-par 64 with a 4 under-par 68 for a two-day total of 12 under-par, which allowed him to be in contention with only 2 strokes from the lead. In 3 rd place, Gregorio made 5 birdies and 1 single bogey during the round today and explained, “my game tee to green both yesterday and today has been extremely solid. Today I didn’t putt bad, but I didn’t make as many putts as I wanted to which is why yesterday I was able to make more birdies and therefore a lower score.” He also commented that he found, “ the course was playing slightly easier today compared to my round yesterday. The toughest part but I think for every player this week, due to the extreme heat and humidity we have to face. That was the toughest part of today’s round, well actually the entire week.” Gregorio’s plans to “play shot by shot tomorrow and stay patient especially in this heat, however its obviously in my mind that the goal is to win a 3 rd tournament to guarantee at 110% my Challenge Tour card for next year.”

The final round of the 2022 Roma Alps Open , will begin at 7:30 am from the 1 st and 10 th hole.

A total of 55 players made the cut which was set 3 under-par (141). The leaders will tee off at 9:09 am from the 1 st hole. The winner of the 2022 Roma Alps Open , will earn the winner’s check of €5,800 and 6,525 very important Order of Merit points.

After his amazing bogey-free round, he explained how the round went: “Today I played well but it was a tough and long day due to the heat we had to face. When I missed the greens, I managed to make some important recoveries so I’m happy.” When asked about his plans after this week, Gregorio stated, “I will take a few days off but I would like to play some Challenge Tour events before the final 2 events of the Alps Tour season. The Course-

Golf Club Parco de’ Medici is home to 27 holes of golf that are divided into three different 9 holes courses. The championship course was designed by Italian architect Davide Mezzacane and laid out by American Peter Fazio . The course will be set as a 6389 meters par 72 course for this week’s event.

This course has hosted numerous international tournaments in the past including the 2020 Alps Tour Qualifying School, and the 2021 Roma Alps Open mixed event which was played alongside the LETAS players. It is a very demanding and challenging golf course that has strategically placed bunkers, ditches and water hazards. The course is placed between the city of Rome and the sea, which may influence the players game due to the presence of local sea breeze. It is one of the few golf courses in Italy that has a similar feel to that of Scottish golf links. Along the 18 th hole fairway, players can find the remains of an antique Roman building that dates back to the 1 st century BC.

Netherland’s Vince Van Veen, 26 years of age wins the 2022 Fred.Olsen Alps de La Gomera after 1 hole of sudden-death playoff by holing out a chip shot for birdie . He was 15 th in the Order of Merit before the start of this week, but has now moved into 8 th place. Vince shot a 6 under-par round today for a three-day total of 15 under-par. He has been playing very solid during this entire season and was glad to have captured his first win on the Alps Tour at a course he was familiar. When he completed the playoff, he was very pleased, “the course was playing a lot easier today as there was less wind. There were some tricky pins but as there was less wind it made it easier. I’ve been playing well for quite some time but I kept believing and doing the same things that were making me play well which eventually led to today’s victory. To win in this fashion, in a playoff chipping in makes it even better as I’ve been waiting a while for this. There were definitely some emotions at the end which I was glad to let go.” Vince dedicates “this win is to my entire team as they have helped me throughout the tough times. We stuck together, communicated openly and I’m glad to have them by my side. My season goal was to get into the top 5, I’m close and I’m happy to have made a big stride here.  I’m very thankful for the people around me who kept believing in me.”

French amateur, Julien Sale who is only 24 years old, continues to demonstrate his solid performance having 8 top 10 so far this season, 5 of them occurred in the last 5 tournaments. Of course, an eagle so early in your round, especially a final round gives you a good boost. The wind was really calm this morning which was nice, Alvaro and I were both playing really well and pulling for each other which made it even better.” He also thoroughly enjoyed the location this week, “this week is definitely one of the best weeks of the year no doubt! An amazing hotel with views over the Atlantic. The golf course is in perfect shape what else can we ask for!” When asked about his plans for the rest of the season Tomas responded, “considering the position that I am at in the rankings and how well the other guys are playing my goal is to play my best and be in contention every week. La Gomera, July 15 th 2022- First round leader, Netherland’s Lars Keunen maintains his lead following the second round of the 2022 Fred.Olsen Alps de La Gomera . He has a two-day total of 13 under-par. In a tie for 2 nd place at 10 under-par only 3 shots back, three of this season previous winners: Koen Kouwenaar , Stefano Mazzoli and Tom Vaillant (am).  In a tie for 5 th place, Netherland’s Vince Van Veen .

It was another gorgeous day at La Gomera, the second-smallest main island of the Canary Islands, host of the 2022 Fred.Olsen Alps de La Gomera . The tournament played at the beautiful Tecina Golf began at 8:30 this morning under sunny skies. The scoring conditions were more favorable in the morning thanks to the slight breeze while in the afternoon, the conditions were more complicated due to a stronger persistent wind.

First round leader, Netherland’s Lars Keunen maintains a 3 strokes lead heading into the final round of the tournament. He shot a 5 under-par,66 today for a two-day total of 13 under-par. His round toady included 4 birdies, 1 eagle and 1 bogey. After his round, Lars commented that his game “was pretty similar to yesterday, I unfortunately holed a few less putts. Today was definitely windier so it was slightly trickier. Tomorrow I will approach it like any other round, knowing that I have some good players only a few shots behind so I will definitely have to go low.” When asked what a win would mean to him, being 16 th in the rankings, Lars responded “a win would be really great, I definitely need it but if it doesn’t happen tomorrow I know it will happen at some point but at least I’ll be able to move up in the ranking.”

Koen Kouwenaar , winner of the 2022 Molinetto Alps Open , is in a three-way tie for 2 nd place at 10 under-par heading into tomorrow’s round. He shot the lowest round of the day with a fantastic 8 under-par 63. Being a past winner and currently 4 th in the Order of Merit, he would like to add another title to his record which would move him up in the rankings securing him a spot for next year’s Challenge Tour. During today’s round, he made 6 birdies and 1 bogey on the front nine and 2 birdies, 1 eagle and a bogey on the back nine. After his round Koen commented on how today “there was definitely less wind than yesterday and from the afternoon, however the wind today was the opposite direction compared to yesterday. For example, today on the par 5,3 rd yesterday I easily reached it in 2 and today I wasn’t able to reach it. Today the pins were slightly easier today compared to yesterday. There were some tricky ones for sure.” He also said that “My putter was very hot today especially on the back nine where on 15,16 and 17 I holed some nice long putts. I’m very happy with my -8 for today especially the way I stand. My game has improved a lot in the past few weeks as I’m avoiding a lot of big misses. On this golf course, distance control from the rough is very hard so I’m glad to be in the fairway for most of the day.” When asked about his strategy for tomorrow, Koen explained: “tomorrow I just want to be objective in the way I play, just do my thing. Don’t get distracted and be mentally very flat and not influenced by how my score is evolving throughout the round.”

Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli , who won the first event of the season, the 2022 Ein Bay Open is the second player tied for 2 nd place at 10 under-par. He shot 31 on the front nine and 34 on the back nine for a 6 under-par, 65 today. After his round, he explained that he played “well both days so far. I struggled both day scoring on the back nine even if I’m played really well. On the front nine my game was very solid both days. I missed some yardages on the back due to the wind. Tomorrow I need to take advantage of the short holes and the par 5 on the front nine. Also it’s important to maintain the ball in the fairway as distance control from the rough is tricky on this course.”

French amateur, Tom Vaillant two-time winner this season, and 2 nd in the current ranking is looking to add a third title to his season. He is the third player who is tied with a two-day total of 10 under-par heading into the final round tomorrow. Tom made 8 birdies and 1 bogey during his second round. At the conclusion of his 7 under-par round, he mentioned “my game is great, I’m feeling really good and I think this course is a very good fit for me. Today was definitely windier for me compared to yesterday. Tomorrow I will approach the course with the same strategy than the past two days and we will see what happens.” He also added that his plan to change his playing status from amateur to professional should occur at the end of this year.

In 5 th place at 9 under-par, Netherland’s Vince Van Veen . There is a 6-way tie for 6 th place just one stroke back that includes: Gary Hurley , Davey Porsius and Julien Sale (am).

Gregorio De Leo captures his 2nd win of the season!

Soria, July 9 th 2022- Gregorio De Leo 2 nd victory of the season aids him in conquering his dream of becoming a Challenge Tour player next season. He captured his second win of the season at the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas with a total score of 14 under-par. Mathias Eggenberger concluded the tournament in 2 nd place with a three-day score of 13 under-par. In a three-way tie for 3 rd place at 12 under-par: Portugal’s Vitor Londot Lopes , Italy’s Giacomo Fortini and Netherland’s Lars Keunen .

The weather and scoring conditions have been constant throughout the past few days. When the first groups teed off, the temperature was in the low 20*, however the temperatures quickly rose to a high of 35* with no wind today making the scoring conditions very favorable for the players. Play began at 8:15 am and the leaders group teed off at 9:21am and 9:32am from the 1 st hole.

Gregorio De Leo  wins the  2022 Alps de Las Castillas  by 1 stroke. He shot a final round of 5 under-par, that included 1 bogey and 6 birdies. He won the  2022 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon  with an unbelievable 59 in the final round, adding therefore another title to his record. His dream of playing on the Challenge Tour is gradually fulfilling thanks to his victory today. He dedicates his second professional win to his parents, coach Alain and girlfriend that have supported him all along the way. After his win,  De Leo  commented on how  “the course was much firmer today especially around the greens it was much harder to make good recoveries. The pins were a good mix, some tricky ones you had to be careful and some were more accessible.”   When asked about his game today, he was very happy:  “I’m very satisfied, yesterday I was expecting -15 to be the winning score and I was very close. Today I putted very very well. Today was an incredible day. I’m very happy. My putting definitely helped me a lot to win this week. I putted very well last week also which gave me more confidence into this week. The only mistake during the round was my 3-putt on the 10 th  hole so I could have reached what I expected be the winning score.”  When asked about his plans for the rest of the season,  De Leo  explained:  “I wasn’t expecting to win another tournament so I’m not sure yet how I will my strategy change going forward. I will speak to my coach once I’m home and decide what’s best. I would like to play maybe a couple Challenge Tour events to see how the courses are different and my game compares to their but we will see.”

Another of this season past winners  Mathias Eggenberger , winner at 2022 Winter Series Golf Nazionale concluded the tournament in 2 nd place just 1 stroke back. After his round, he was very happy with this week’s result and how his game is evolving: “Today was pretty good, can’t complain. I had a tough 1 st round but coming back to finish the tournament at 13 under-par I’m happy.”

The tournament ends with a three-way tie for 3 rd place at 12 under-par with Portugal’s Vitor Londot Lopes , Italy’s  Giacomo Fortini and Netherland’s Lars Keunen . Just 1 stroke back in 6 th place, Netherland’s Floris De Haas at 11 under-par.

Gregorio De Leo has now moved into 1 st place of the Alps Tour Order of Merit ranking after his victory today, Tom Vaillant(am) has moved into 2 nd place and France’s Julien Sale (am) into 3 rd place.

Gregorio De Leo winner of the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas , earned 6,525 Order of Merit points and the winning check of €5,800.

A 6-way tie for the lead after Round 2 at the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas!

Soria, July 8 th 2022- After Round 2 at the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas there is a 6-way tie for the lead with a two-day total of 9 under-par. In the 6-way tie at 9 under-par, there is: hometown favorite Spain’s Daniel Berna Manzanares , Netherland’s Lars Keunen , Italy’s Giacomo Fortini , Italy’s Gregorio De Leo , Spain’s Jacobo Pastor and Netherland’s Floris De Haas . In 7 th place with a two-day total of 8 under-par and an incredible bogey-free 10 under-par, 60 today, Spain’s Manuel Morugán . Alongside in a tie for 7 th place at 8 under-par, Italy’s Andrea Saracino . Just one stroke back with a two-day total of 7 under-par and in a tie for 9 th place, Mathias Eggenberger and Vitor Londot Lopes .

Another beautiful summer day with a pleasant summer temperature welcomed the players at Club de Golf Soria in the inland Northeastern area of Spain for the second round of the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas . The scoring conditions were more favorable for the players in the morning due to calmer wind conditions, unfortunately the wind picked up for the afternoon groups. The course is still playing relatively soft for the players due to the heavy rain that occurred before the beginning of the tournament, giving an advantage to the morning groups. Play began at 8:15am from the 1 st and 10 th hole.

Second Round Player Quotes-

Hometown favorite, Spain’s Daniel Berna Manzanares shot a 3 under-par round today, to be one of the 6 players tied for the lead heading into the final round. He hopes to have another good round tomorrow and hopefully capture a victory on his home course. When he concluded his round, Manzanares commented on how today was a hard-fought day: “the opposite of yesterday, when I didn’t miss a shot. Today I went out slightly angry because of the three putts on the last hole yesterday. I’m happy to have made zero bogeys and 3 birdies. It was going well, but I started off missing to the left, I didn’t hit the ball well at all and I wasn’t at ease at any moment, but that’s the thing about golf, you have to know when you’re not hitting it well and know how to get the round right.” When asked about his expectations for tomorrow: “if I’m on the 10 th tee 3 strokes behind the leader, I know anything can happen, even with three holes to go. I want to fight for it and see if I’m lucky.”

Italy’s Gregorio De Leo is continuing his stretch of good results heading into tomorrow’s final round tied for the lead. He is already one of this season’s past winners, having won the 2022 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon and would like to add another title to his record. After the round, De Leo happily commented: “I like this course a lot. It’s not a short course, therefore you need to hit the ball well, and need to putt well also. In the last few events, I’ve lost some confidence with my driving which I’ve gained some confidence back this week which it comes in handy on this golf course. Tomorrow I want to try and shot a 5 or 6 under-par round and see what happens. I think the winning score will be around 15 under-par.

Jacobo Pastor is another player tied for the lead, with a two-day total of 9 under-par. He shot a second round at 5 under-par putting him in contention heading into the final round. Pastor happy with his position noted: “I’m happy, I played pretty solid, I had moments of good golf and others not so good. Tomorrow I’ll play another day. There are moments when I think too much about the result, it’s a process of improving to make it easier every day and have more opportunities like today.”

Floris De Haas , a further one of the six players tied for the lead after 2 rounds at the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas . He shot an even par round today to remain at 9 under-par. At the completion of his round, De Haas commented: “I just made a couple stupid mistakes today, especially on the greens.”   He found that the course “was firmer compared to yesterday and the greens not as soft. Still the conditions were good, especially there wasn’t a lot of wind.” When asked about his expectations heading into the final round, he responded “If you would have given me this position heading into the last round before the start of the tournament I would have taken it. I will take it very easy tomorrow. There are a lot of good players in the lead and close. I have no expectations, will just enjoy the day.”

Closing the 1st place six player tie: Lars Keunen and Giacomo Fortini.

Spain’s Manuel Morugán , winner of the 2022 Abruzzo Alps Open , shot an incredible 10 under-par in Round 2 for a two-day total of 8 under-par and is in a tie for 7 th place heading into the final round. His second round included 1 eagle and 8 birdies. He shot a 32 on the front nine and a 28 on the back nine to sign his card for a second round 60. After his round, he commented that his “key today was my mental control. I talked to my psychologist yesterday and came up with a mental strategy to approach the round today and it went very well.”

Together with Morugán in a tie for 7 th place, and just one stroke back of the lead heading into the final round, Italy’s Andrea Saracino . Saracino is coming off a 3 rd place finish last week and is looking for a solid performance and another good finish heading into the final round tomorrow.

The final round of the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas , will begin at 8:15 am from hole 1 and 10.

A total of 49 players made the cut which was set at even par (140). The leaders will tee off at 9:21 and 9:32 am from the 1 st hole. The winner of the 2022 Alps de Las Castillas , will earn €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
