A season of grinding summed up in a day, as jordan spieth survives to play finale.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – A season spanning 11 months and 21 events and roughly 4,700 strokes was coming down to this.

The FedExCup has undergone several iterations and been the subject of countless marketing campaigns, but it shouldn’t be that complicated. The Tour postseason underscores that every shot matters.

For the better part of 16 years, that’s been the defining characteristic of these playoffs, and Jordan Spieth was painfully aware of it Sunday, as he strained to stay inside the top 30 cutoff at the BMW Championship.

Full-field scores from BMW Championship

That’s why he was walking so quickly down the fairways at Olympia Fields, in full grind mode.

That’s why he was pumping his fist while still a dozen shots off the lead.

That’s why he was dismayed by a bad lie, apoplectic about a missed putt, salty after an untimely bogey. He knew, deep down, his season was on the brink.

The first two legs of the FedExCup playoffs are made-for-TV events. Coverage can bounce around, to various putts of consequence, telling a slightly delayed story of how the round’s birdies and bogeys create volatility in the season-long points standings. On the ground, of course, that’s not the reality. Entering the week at No. 27, Spieth might have sensed what he needed to advance – he had to finish in the top half of the 50-man field, to be safe – but it’s also a moving target, dependent not just on his own play but those around him.

Tyrrell Hatton and Emiliano Grillo.

Sepp Straka and Sahith Theegala.

Denny McCarthy and Justin Rose.

Keeping track of all of it, in real time, was impossible. Updates would occasionally flash onto the giant leaderboards, but they aren’t set up on every hole. All Spieth could do was put up the best score possible and hope it was enough.

There were plenty of low rounds Sunday – none better than Viktor Hovland’s closing 61 that stole him the BMW title – but Spieth didn’t post one of them. He’d managed just two birdies and a bogey on the opening nine, unable to create any breathing room. He had just a wedge into the 10 th hole, a green-light special, when the wind flipped and sent his ball screaming over the green. He walked off with double bogey, and for the next two hours it was an almighty struggle to the clubhouse.

After a nifty birdie on the par-5 15 th hole, Spieth likely figured he needed at least one more birdie to make the rest of his afternoon less stressful. Wailing away on the long 17 th , he thought he hit a perfect drive down the left side, only to discover that a wind gust had shoved his ball just barely into the rough. When he arrived at his ball buried deep in the Kentucky bluegrass, he groaned with disgust.

Had the ball finished a foot right of that mark, he was sitting perfectly in the first cut, ready to attack. A few feet left, he’d have little issue in the light rough.

“God! Really?! ” he cried.

The lie was horrid.

“Why are you doing this s--t to me?” he groaned, to no in particular.

With no chance to go flag-hunting into the elevated green, his ball drifted meekly into the right greenside bunker. After splashing out to 7 feet, Spieth felt the weight of the moment. He took his time, looking at the read from every angle. He called in caddie Michael Greller for help.

Left-center, he thought. But his ball dove left at the cup.

“Ah!” he shrieked. “No way!”

He ripped off his hat. Wandered around the side of the green. After playing partner Keegan Bradley cleaned up his par, Spieth returned to the green to look at the line again. He shouted an expletive into his towel.

Just while standing there, Spieth dropped in the standings from 29 th to 30 th to … well, it wasn’t immediately certain. The board didn’t update by the time he bolted for the 18 th tee.

The drama continued to build. His drive found the rough. Then his approach didn’t chase up onto the green. Then his birdie pitch didn’t drop. Finally, 6 feet away for par, it became clear: He was 30 th .

“This is a pressure-packed putt,” the on-course reporter whispered into his mic, and Spieth’s attempt caught the right edge and stayed out, his bogey-bogey finish dooming him to a Sunday 71 – the second-worst score of any player inside the top 35.

Spieth shook hands with Greller. Removed his hat. Stared at the giant screen.

At the time, he was tied for 35 th in the event – not in the top half of the field, like he needed – and he kept staring at the screen, bent over, hands on his knees, like a gymnast awaiting scores from the judges.

The board was about to flip to the third page of the leaderboard.

Spieth leaned in.

There it was.

He was … 30 th .

By two points.

Spieth made the long walk toward scoring to replay his day, his week, his season – all that could have been. Three more hours of golf remained.

That Spieth was even in this precarious position, on the cusp of postseason elimination, was somewhat of a surprise. He’d played well, in spurts, this season. He had seven top-10s. That included a playoff loss at one of the Tour’s signature events, the RBC Heritage. That included a tie for fourth at the Masters. That included a tie for sixth at the first playoff event, last week in Memphis.

But Spieth also didn’t win, and that’s been a common theme these past few years since he emerged from a slump that threatened to derail his Hall of Fame career. After 11 wins in his first five seasons on Tour, he’s managed only two in the last six years: He ended a four-year winless drought the week before the 2021 Masters, against a weak field in San Antonio; and last year, he prevailed in a playoff at Harbour Town following a wild final round during which all of the other contenders tripped over themselves before the finish line.

Though Spieth remains immensely popular, his productivity and stats have tailed off. Measured against his former self, in his best years of 2015 and ’17, there’s no comparison. He was an elite driver of the ball in 2015; now he’s 39 th . He was an elite iron player in 2017; now he’s 35 th . Though he’s still magic around the greens, he’s nowhere near as hot of a putter as during his peak; now he’s 71 st .

This season was his best statistical campaign since 2017, and yet he still didn’t have many realistic chances to win. He still was in danger of missing the Tour finale for the fourth time in the past six seasons. He still doesn’t sniff the Tour’s top statistical leaders; Scottie Scheffler, on average, has gained 2 ½ strokes more per round than Spieth this season, while Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay are all two-plus or better.

Of course, that was of little concern at the moment. That’s a daunting, big-picture deficit to erase. Right now, as he walked toward scoring, he was more worried about the FedExCup bubble, about just making it to the season-ender.

Spieth declined a media request through the Tour communications staff, but the Tour’s social-media team captured a locker-room exchange where he pressed a Tour official on specific projections. It did little to satisfy him. Even after a cooldown period, he still wasn’t ready to discuss his play. He avoided a small group of reporters and ducked into a white BMW, headed out of town, with no shortage of shots to rue and a scoring site to refresh.

Three hours later, his position was made official: He was safely into the field at East Lake, by the narrowest of margins, with just 12 points to spare.

Next week in Atlanta, Spieth will spot Scheffler 10 strokes to start. The gulf might feel even bigger.

Tour Championship bubble is tight and right now Jordan Spieth would be first man out

The longer the season goes, the tighter the FedEx Cup race gets. Just the way the PGA Tour likes it. And while the leader in points will start the Tour Championship next week with an automatic two-shot lead, just qualifying to play at East Lake is turning out to be a dramatic race of another kind.

With 18 holes remaining Sunday in the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Jordan Spieth sits 31st in projected FedEx Cup standings, making him the first man out as it stands. The three-time major champion started the week 27th in points but has played progressively worse over the three days outside Chicago, shooting 68-70-72.

During Saturday’s third round he was even par after 14 holes with one bogey and one birdie but made bogey on Nos. 15 and 18 to drop into a tie for 30th place in the tournament and move to 31st in FedEx Cup projected points. He trails Denny McCarthy by just a miniscule 2.902 points.

Spieth was 31st in the final standings in 2018 and missed out on the Tour Championship by one position.

McCarthy would be the last man in after a third-round 65 that included five birdies. He’s tied for seventh place in the championship at seven under, four shots behind leaders Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick . McCarthy has never qualified for the Tour Championship.

“I kind of just had a don't-care attitude today and I was just going to commit to the shot, hit it, go find it and hit the next one,” McCarthy said. “That's going to be the plan again tomorrow. If I do that again, and probably going to have to hit it a little better off the tee to give myself some more chances instead of scrambling and fighting, but if I just keep the same mindset I had today, I think I'll be in good shape tomorrow.”

Elsewhere around the bubble: Justin Rose entered the week 32nd in points, is tied for seventh place in the tournament and is projected 26th in FedEx Cup points; Jason Day, Chris Kirk and Tyrrell Hatton are Nos. 27-29 respectively; The next four after Spieth in positions 31-34 are Emiliano Grillo, Sepp Straka, Sahith Theegala and Adam Svensson.

Also on the line are automatic selections for the U.S. Ryder Cup team as the top six in points at the end of Sunday’s final round will qualify for next month’s matches. U.S. Captain Zach Johnson will then get six picks to round out his roster after the Tour Championship.

Jordan Spieth stays alive in 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs after rollercoaster Round 4 at BMW Championship

Whether spieth would move on to the tour championship at east lake was a top storyline to follow on sunday.

BMW Championship - Round Three

Carding a 72-hole total of 1-over 281 at the 2023 BMW Championship, Jordan Spieth finished outside the top 30 in the 50-man field yet did just enough to remain inside the top 30 (29) of the FedEx Cup standing to qualify for the 2023 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Dropping from 27th to 29th in the season-long race with his play outside Chicago, Spieth was forced to wait and see how fellow bubble boys Denny McCarthy, Justin Rose and Chris Kirk finished their rounds before booking his flight to Atlanta.

Spieth's final round was a rollercoaster, as expected. Making a double bogey to begin his back nine, Spieth found himself projected to fall outside the number before he got to work. A pair of birdies on 13 and 15 gave him some much-needed breathing room before the wheels began to fall off coming down the difficult homestretch. Bogeys on the final two holes made his wait more nerve wracking, but he was able to sneak through when all was said and done.

If Spieth had fallen on the wrong side of the number, it would mark his fourth absence from the Tour Championship since 2018. Instead, he will begin the proceedings in Atlanta at even par and 10 strokes behind FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler.

Spieth experienced an odd season, even for his standards. He contended at designated events, the WM Phoenix Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational before nearly winning the Valspar Championship where a late water ball derailed his chances. A Sunday charge alongside Phil Mickelson in the final round of the Masters saw Spieth finish in a share of fourth at the year's first major championship.

He nearly accomplished a career first the following week at the RBC Heritage where he served as defending champion. Unable to defeat Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff, Spieth settled for runner-up honors and failed to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career.

Injuries began to form at the Wells Fargo Championship where he threw out his back and jammed his wrist. In his last nine events of the 2023 campaign, Spieth missed four cuts, two of which came at historically comfortable spots: the Charles Schwab Challenge and Scottish Open.

He kicked off his FedEx Cup Playoffs in typical Spieth fashion after grabbing the first-round lead at the St. Jude Championship, but he couldn't sustain the pace over the next 54 holes. Instead he settled for a T6 result. Despite collecting his best finish since his top five at the Memorial Tournament, Spieth did not harness this momentum around Olympia Fields. Although he walked off the course disappointed, Spieth's year will continue with a chance to end his up-and-down campaign on a high note at the Tour Championship.

All 14 Of Jordan Spieth's Career Wins

Jordan Spieth has already achieved more in his five year PGA Tour career than the majority of players achieve in a lifetime. By Matt Cradock

The 24 year old has 14 Professional wins Worldwide, including 11 PGA Tour victories and three majors.

This week marks the fifth anniversary of Spieth’s debut on the PGA Tour and what better way to celebrate it then to go through each Professional win of his career.

2013 John Deere Classic

The American's first victory came only a few months after securing his PGA Tour card.

At the John Deere Classic, Spieth shot a final round 65 to get himself into a three-man playoff, this also included a hole out from the greenside bunker on the 72 nd hole.

The three-man playoff included Zach Johnson and David Hearn and was a closely-fought encounter.

Eventually Spieth claimed the victory with a par on the fifth extra hole. The win made Spieth the fourth youngest player to win on the PGA Tour and the first teenager to win for 82 years.

2014 Emirates Australian Open

The second win of his career came at the end of 2014 in Australia. The Texan had been level with leaders Greg Chalmers and Brett Rumford after three rounds of play.

The fourth round however was all about Spieth, as he shot a course record -8 round of 63 to breeze to a six stroke victory.

2014 Hero World Challenge

jordan spieth tour championship

The following week Spieth would claim yet another title in dominant fashion as he produced four amazing rounds of golf.

The American was in scintillating form as he set a new tournament record of -26, his four rounds were: 66,67,63 & 66.

2015 Valspar Championship

jordan spieth tour championship

The second PGA Tour victory for Spieth came at the Valspar Championship in Florida.

In an amazing duel between Ryder Cup team mate Patrick Reed and fellow American Sean O’Hair it was Spieth who came out on top on the third extra playoff hole.

The tournament was dubbed one of the best of the year due to its ever-changing leaderboard and incredible escapes and saves.

2015 Masters

jordan spieth tour championship

The second win of Spieth’s 2015 season came at the famous Augusta National Golf Club.

It was the first major win for the American and in the process he would smash several records along the way.

His first two rounds of 64 & 66 set the 36 hole scoring record. He would then break the 54 hole scoring record the next day and would end up equalling Tiger Woods’ overall record of -18.

Spieth also produced the most birdies during the Masters by making 28 and became the second-youngest person to win the Green Jacket.

2015 US Open

jordan spieth tour championship

The 21-year-old followed up his first major victory with yet another one at the 2015 US Open.

Spieth started the final round in a four way tie for the lead and after posting a -1 round of 69 he was leading in the clubhouse.

However, Dustin Johnson stuck his approach shot on the 18 th to 12-feet for a possible eagle and it seemed the curtain was coming down on Spieth's hope for another Major.

Amazingly though, Johnson would three putt and hand the trophy to his countryman. The win made Spieth only the sixth player ever to win the Masters and the US Open in the same year and the fourth-youngest player to win multiple majors.

2015 John Deere Classic

jordan spieth tour championship

Spieth claimed his second John Deere Classic in 2015 in yet another playoff, this time against American Tom Gillis.

The American had been questioned for playing the event as it was the Open Championship the following week and the a number of players were playing in Scotland as preparation.

However, Spieth would claim victory on the second playoff hole and help gain momentum going towards the third major of the year.

2015 Tour Championship & FedEx Cup

jordan spieth tour championship

Spieth’s incredible 2015 season was wrapped up in fine style as the American claimed the Tour Championship and with it the FedEx Cup.

The 22-year-old needed a victory to claim the FedEx Cup title and he delivered, as he fired four rounds in the 60s to finish four clear of Danny Lee, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson .

The five victories during the season saw Spieth sweep all the major awards for the season: PGA Player of the Year and PGA Tour Player of the Year, the Vardon Trophy, Byron Nelson Award for leading the tour in scoring average and Arnold Palmer Award for leading the tour's money list.

2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions

jordan spieth tour championship

Spieth started 2016 in strong form once again; during the Tournament of Champions he would shoot a record score of -30.

He would win the event by eight strokes and also became just the second player in PGA Tour history to shoot -30 in a 72-hole event.

2016 Dean & DeLuca Invitational

jordan spieth tour championship

Spieth claimed his first win at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational following his Masters collapse in April .

The American birdied six holes on the back nine to hold off fellow Countryman Harris English by three shots.

2016 Emirates Australian Open

jordan spieth tour championship

This was the third win of the 2016 season for Spieth and it came in yet another playoff, this time against Australians Cameron Smith and Ashley Hall.

The American had shot a final round 69 to draw level with the leaders and a birdie on the first playoff hole was enough to win the tournament for the second time in three years.

2017 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

jordan spieth tour championship

In his 100 th PGA Tour start he would claim yet another title, finishing at -19.

Coming into the final round he had a comfortable six shot lead and a final round of 70 helped cement the victory in convincing fashion.

With the win, Spieth became just the second man, along with Tiger Woods, to win nine times on the PGA Tour before the age of 24.

2017 Travelers Championship

And he wouldn’t have to wait long to secure his 10 th title in dramatic circumstances.

After a first round 63 he almost won wire-to-wire, finishing at -12 and tied with fellow countryman and close friend Daniel Berger .

At the first playoff hole Spieth would hole out from the greenside bunker to miraculously claim his 10 th PGA Tour win of his career. The celebration with caddie Michael Greller was superb.

2017 Open Championship

jordan spieth tour championship

His third major win came at Royal Birkdale in once again an epic duel, this time with Matt Kuchar.

Having entered the final round with the outright lead he was soon trailing Kuchar, but a formidable run of birdie on the 14 th , eagle on the 15 th and birdies on 16 and 17 gave the 23-year-old a three stroke victory and the Claret Jug.

He therefore became only the second player in history to win three of golf's four majors before his 24 th birthday.

Spieth has also been apart of three President Cup teams claiming three out three wins and also two Ryder Cup teams winning once in 2016 and losing once in 2014.

Jordan Spieth playing PGA Championship after injury

Jordan Spieth playing PGA Championship after injury

Change Text Size

Jordan Spieth will play the PGA Championship after missing last week’s AT&T Byron Nelson due to injury.

“Since last Wednesday afternoon, I feel like I can get into every position with the speed that I want and produce the scores that I want," Spieth told Golf Channel after a nine-hole practice round Wednesday. "I’m just a little rusty."

Spieth had severe pain in his left wrist after missing the cut in the previous week’s Wells Fargo Championship. The injury forced him to miss his hometown tournament and the site of his PGA TOUR debut. He practiced Tuesday at Oak Hill Country Club with black KT tape and white tape wrapped around the wrist. Golf Channel reported that he hit balls for 70 minutes and played a nine-hole practice round Tuesday.

It will be interesting to see how the wrist holds up in Oak Hill’s lush rough and cold temperatures scheduled for this week. Spieth is scheduled to tee off at 8:22 a.m. ET on Thursday alongside Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland. The low for Thursday’s forecast is to be 35 degrees.

The PGA Championship is the lone major standing between Spieth and the career Grand Slam. He has made the cut in the past eight PGA Championships, including a runner-up to Jason Day in 2015 and a third-place finish in 2019, the first since the PGA’s move to May. Those are his only top-10s in 10 PGA Championship appearances. He missed the cut in the 2013 PGA Championship at Oak Hill during his first season as a professional.

The U.S. Open is the only major where Spieth has fewer top-10s, with his win in the 2015 U.S. Open at the modern links of Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, representing his lone top-10 in that event. Oak Hill, which has hosted three U.S. Opens, is expected to provide an old-school test with its thick rough and firm greens.

Spieth had been playing well before the injury, finishing in the top four in all but one of his last five starts. That includes a fourth-place finish at the Masters and playoff loss to Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage, Spieth’s final start before the Wells Fargo. He is 20th in the FedExCup Standings and 10th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Rickie Fowler Left His Mark on Jordan Spieth's Prize for Draining Hole-in-One

  • Author: Madison Williams

Jordan Spieth celebrated his fourth career hole-in-one on Thursday at the Valero Texas Open in style, as he was gifted a new car for achieving the feat.

The three-time major winner drove away in a brand new Lexus after making the shot on Hole 16. He finished his first round with a score of one-over 73.

However, his friend and fellow golfer Rickie Fowler jumped at the opportunity to make his mark on Spieth's new ride. As Spieth was driving away from Thursday's round, Fowler was photographed signing the car's windshield.

Fowler himself has drained three hole-in-ones in his career, with the most recent ace happening at the 2023 Waste Management Open.

Before Thursday's hole-in-one, Spieth's most recent ace on the PGA Tour came in 2021 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, while his previous two aces occured in his first year on tour at the 2013 Puerto Rico Open and then in his historic 2015 season at the BMW Championship.

Jordan Spieth finds drain, clubhouse, gutter in preposterous Texas Open finish

Jordan Spieth had a relatively benign day at the Valero Texas Open; then things went completely sideways on the 18th hole.

jordan spieth tour championship

Jordan Spieth has a tendency to have rollercoaster rounds, often featuring spectacular shots, both good and bad.

But nothing can compare to the ordeal he endured on Saturday at TPC San Antonio’s 18th hole, a 618-yard par-5.

The three-time major champion rifled his drive left of the fairway, with his ball nestling beneath a tree limb. Things then started to get interesting at the Valero Texas Open .

Instead of taking his medicine, Spieth decided to try playing hero ball. At this juncture, he was at 5-under for the championship, eight behind Akshay Bhatia , and 2-under for his round. He felt an aggressive play would help his cause, but instead, it backfired.

It's all a part of the experience. pic.twitter.com/hQvyeSJam6 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 6, 2024

His second shot ricocheted off a limb, veered left, and came to rest next to a drain located within the penalty area . But then, Spieth decided to do something crazy.

Instead of taking relief, Spieth knowingly hit his third shot onto the roof of TPC San Antonio’s clubhouse. His ball hilariously trickled down the roof, resting in the gutter.

That led Dan Hicks of NBC Sports to say, “We’ve seen it all from Jordan Spieth. Now it’s in the gutter!”

No words. pic.twitter.com/1x0s52FbU4 — Playing Through (@_PlayingThrough) April 6, 2024

Since no white stakes marked the clubhouse as out-of-bounds, Spieth could use the clubhouse to his advantage . Spieth knew this, too. Consequently, PGA Tour rules officials awarded Spieth a free drop well in the field of play.

Spieth then took his relief 124 yards short of the pin and punched his fourth shot up and onto the front of the green. But unfortunately for Spieth, he three-putted, leading to a double-bogey seven and an even-par 72 for the day.

He began the day with back-to-back bogeys, but worked hard to wipe those clean with birdies at the 6th, 7th, 12th, and 17th holes.

By the time he arrived at the 18th tee, one may have figured that Spieth would finish with a pedestrian par or birdie—given that TPC San Antonio’s final hole is one of the easier ones out there.

And yet, in typical Spieth fashion, his last hole was a rollercoaster.

2024 Masters missed cuts: Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas among stars not playing weekend

The conditions at augusta national proved more difficult for some than others.

jordan-spieth-round-2-2024-masters-g.jpg

Big names like Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler find themselves atop the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters through two rounds, but not all of their peers were as lucky. The blustery conditions engulfing Augusta National Golf Club wreaked havoc on the competition with some players having no answers at all.

The cutline appeared set in stone for most of the afternoon at 5 over, but late mistakes answered the prayers of many and moved it to 6 over with only a couple groupings  left on the golf course. Thanks to a double bogey on the 18th from Hideki Matsuyama, players such as Tom Kim and Rickie Fowler will now have a weekend tee time.

Chief among the group on the outside looking in was 2015 champion Jordan Spieth. The man who seemingly can do no wrong around Augusta National did plenty this week, namely in the form of a quadruple-bogey 9 in his first round. Restarting his opening 18 Friday morning, Spieth got it to 1 over but gave all his works (and then some) back with numerous mistakes on the par-5 15th.

Spieth went on to sign for a 7-over 79 in Round 1, adding a 2-over 74 in Round 2 for good measure. He never really had a chance to make the weekend unlike many of his counterparts, including best buddy Justin Thomas.

The two-time PGA Championship winner was in the mix for most of his second round. Thomas stepped to the 15th tee even par for the tournament. He laid up in the water leading to a double bogey, but that was only the beginning of his troubles. That double was followed by another on 16, a bogey on 17 and then another double on 18. He played his first 32 holes in even par but his last four in 7 over, officially missing the cut for the weekend.

Viktor Hovland had things rolling in Round 1 and played his first nine in 4 under. It appeared the Norwegian would contend at Augusta National again as he ultimately opened with a 71. In red figures to begin the day, the reigning FedEx Cup champion got punched in the mouth immediately with a snowman on the par-5 2nd. He was never able to recover as Hovland turned in 43 and went onto shoot a second-round 81.

Hovland would have been the highest-ranked player in the field to miss the cut if not for Wyndham Clark. The reigning U.S. Open champion struggled in his Masters debut and narrowly missed a birdie bid on his last to make the weekend. Instead, he for rounds of 73-78 and will be packing his bags tonight.
