8.  Replica of Westeros to be built in Dubai

There was high excitement at the news reported by The Telegraph that Dubai was on its way to recreate Westeros the fictional land of Game of Thrones in the emirate. Known for its outlandish and ambitious designs, this would not have been a far cry from something that might actually happen in Dubai. The Telegraph reported that the designs addressed the problems of temperature, and that some of the stars of the show would also be in attendance intermittently. Sadly no such plans are underway, so diehard fans must wait and see if this April Fool’s encourages anyone to actually recreate a Westeros . Read more: Telegraph

I love when companies poke fun at themselves and join in the fun that is April Fools’ Day. Airlines, tourist attractions, and even airports have been posting today with some clever and funny takes. Here are some of my favorites.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: OUR GIANT FLAMINGO IS ON THE LOOSE 🚨 Phoebe escaped her enclosure at 8:47 AM and has been spotted throughout the Tampa Bay area🦩 🫡 Flamingo recovery efforts are underway ✅ If you see something, say something 🗣️ REPOST TO RAISE AWARENESS pic.twitter.com/Q731uTnZBW — Tampa International Airport ✈️ (@FlyTPA) April 1, 2024

Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Tampa is my home airport in the winter and I love it for its great layout, ease of getting from curb to gate, and the number of flights it offers for a smaller airport. One other standout feature is its giant flamingo statue named “Phoebe.” Apparently, Phoebe hit the road today to take in Spring Break in Tampa Bay.

Simple Flying

The best of aviation april fools 2024.

The airline and travel industry celebrated April Fools' Day with some light-hearted jokes.

If you thought the airline industry was all about challenging operations, razor-thin margins, and competitive airfares, the April Fools’ Day every year is also a reminder that it has an appetite for humor. Here’s what cracked people up this year.

Emirates Residences

Emirates teased its A380 fans with the idea of super luxurious apartments, offering an in-flight experience. Not only will the tower have its own airport, we couldn’t help but notice that construction will begin on February ‘31’ next year.

WestJet MemorEase™

Holidays are fun! But do we need to take a real one? WestJet forced us to consider this existential question as people get increasingly busy in their lives. Why travel physically when WestJet can implant vacation memories directly into your brains with its revolutionary AI-powered MemorEase™ headset. We love that they trademarked the name, too.

Denver airport’s driveway to runway service

If you live within 45 miles of Denver International Airport (DEN) and have $99 to spare, it will send specially-trained drivers to your driveway who will screen you and your bags and drive you directly to the airline gate. TSA was quite impressed and even asked DEN on Instagram whether it should add this as a PreCheck package option.

Solution to a stinky problem

Not a fan of people who rudely pass gas on a flight? (well, who is!) Ever wondered who let out that noisy one just to wake you up from your mid-flight siesta? Ever looked around the cabin to find the source of those dangerous, silent, stinky bombs (it’s usually the ones who avoid eye contact).

Travel deals platform HolidayPirates revealed that an unnamed European airline is installing thermal cameras inside its planes to deal with passengers who like to unnecessarily share their flatulence with fellow travelers. More power to them!

TSA-inspired clothing

TSA cheekily introduced a line of clothing and other merchandise with witty slogans. So convincing was the presentation that many took the bait and clicked on the link to shop online.

easyJet Holibobs

easyJet ruffled a few feathers by compiling a list of not-so-loved phrases and words in a well-thought-out rebranding of easyJet Holidays to easyJet Holibobs. We’ll let the Chief Holibob Officer’s inspiring message do all the talking,

“…Whether you’re looking for a Summer holibob with your huns, a Chrimbo holibob with the hubby and famalam or a spring holibob with BAE - we have just the holibob to make your friends jelly. Amazeballs!”

Frontier widebody planes

Carriers reserve big airshows to announce significant fleet restructuring, but coincidentally, Frontier Airlines chose April 1 to announce twice-weekly Bora Bora service on its ‘widebody’ planes.

Finnair's juice replacement

Replacing a best-selling product would probably raise a few eyebrows, but that is exactly what Finnair did. Don’t be surprised if you're served strawberry juice on your next Finnair flight instead of the usual blueberry. Quite a strategic move!

In your seat in 3 minutes, or else…

FlySafair is applying military-level precision to its efficiency, arming crew members with whistles to direct passengers to their seats and for disembarking, among other things. If you’re not in your seats in three minutes, you'll be asked to offload luggage upon arrival. And they’re not kidding (or are they?)

Reserve your armrest at Jetstar

Offering timely departures and efficient service is just not enough these days. And to stay competitive, Jetstar has introduced the option of reserving your armrest for only $2. Whatever it takes to empower passengers to claim what’s rightfully theirs!

And finally...

Did you hear that Simple Flying recently acquired an Airbus A380 for London office space? The aircraft will be positioned on a barge in the River Thames and will have innovative interiors for employees. Check out all the latest on this exciting development in the article below.

Announcement: Simple Flying Acquires Airbus A380 For London Office Space

Which Travel Companies Played April Fools' Jokes This Year?

Julian Mark Kheel

It's April 1 all day today, and in recent years travel companies have gotten in on the act of launching April Fools' pranks, some with more success than others. Here's a roundup of the best and worst this year...

WestJet said it was rebranding itself as Canada Air , emphasizing the friendliness of its home nation while poking at its big brother Air Canada with the hashtag #MostCanadian:

Emirates claimed to be launching a triple-decker aircraft with its own swimming pool, games room and more:

travel april fools

Richard Branson fronted Virgin Atlantic's contribution to the day of pranks . announcing the airline's new "flapenergy" technology and the resulting airplane with flappable wings named the Dreambird 1417:

Qatar Airways had a little fun playing off its new QSuites with YouSuite:

And how about Travelodge's new "Whiff and Wake" service that wafts the smell of bacon directly from your hotel room's alarm clock?

travel april fools

Meanwhile, the efforts of some travel companies didn't quite make the grade. Southwest claimed to have created an in-flight matchmaking app called Bucklr:

We don't know what tattoos have to do with travel insurance, but that didn't stop Australian company Travel Insurance Direct from promoting its new "tattoo spell checker" app...

travel april fools

We're also not sure about the Lyft Mono, a wearable hailing device , nor about the guy randomly dancing around while wearing it:

Finally, it's not clear Etihad completely understands how this April Fools' thing works:

Cherry blossom tree in the desert. Get it? Get it...?

The Best April Fools’ Day Pranks in Travel

' src=

April Fools’ Day has always held a soft spot in my heart. Not knowing how to read a calendar, my little sister and I would wreck havoc year-round on any unsuspecting victim’s — usually my dad. We’d paint his toenails red and put paint chips in his mouth while he slept peacefully oblivious. Some classics were placing baby oil on the toilet seats, silly puddy on the shower head, hiding rotten eggs… but enough of my memory lane. This year I’ve cooked up the best April Fools’ Day pranks for travelers.

Table of Contents

At the Airport

Replace a fellow travelers passport with one of those children’s ones you get in a happy meal. Hide their real passport somewhere incognito in their carry-on luggage such as between the pages of a book and watch them squirm as they try to explain their way out the situation.

Show up to the airport dressed like the Hamburglar . When checking in, make subtle references to being on FBI’s most wanted list. Twitch and wipe your brow when the check-in attendant scans your ID, and then fist pump when it goes smoothly. Ask if they know of any air marshals flying today “just out of curiosity.” Comment that it seems that the attendant hasn’t been keeping up with the news (or McDonald’s commercials) much.

Put a baggie of flour in someone’s bag just before boarding on a flight to  Indonesia . (Actually you probably shouldn’t try this one either.)

On the Plane

Hang a clothesline up across your aisle. Then place a pair of wet socks onto them and asks if anyone has a spare pair of compression socks because yours have gotten “just a bit pungent.” Bonus if you can put them near the air conditioning vent.

Start talking to the person sitting next to you about your entire life story, beginning with how your grandparents met and a detailed history of your ancestors. Say things like, “fast forward to when…” and “long story short” and skip back to the time Jesus was born (and how he influenced your ancestors migration). Include many “side notes” and “let me explain” statements. Lean forward so that they are forced to hold eye contact with you for the entire duration of the interesting story about how old Uncle Bill, well, his name was William but we call him Bill. Strange really? To call someone William, “Bill?” You would think he’d be Will or even Liam but Bill? Anyways, old Uncle Bill is gluten free. He can’t eat rice or porridge… or was it grains he can no longer have? Shame really, to give up donuts. He always thought it was IBS – you know what that is, don’t you? I have IBS, by the way, so excuse me if I have to get up often to use the little girl’s room. I can’t help it. I inherited IBS from my Aunt Mae, short for Mable. People assume it’s short for Maybelline. Have you ever heard of Maybelline? Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline? Get it? Maybe and Maybelline? Clever, hey?  (If they get up to go to the bathroom, get up and stand in line with them to keep the riveting conversation going. Reference as many catchy jingles and abstract people as possible.)

When most of the passengers start sleeping, stand up, yodel, and beat your fists to your chest. Explain that you’re just keeping the circulation in your body moving to avoid deep vein thrombosis. “Just yellin’ to avoid the thrombo!”

Oldie but goodie: touch the head of every person as you walk through the aisle. Occasionally, scruff the hair. If you’re feeling particularly outgoing, you can play a spontaneous game of, “Duck. Duck. Duck. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!”

Spill fake vomit, blood, and other disgusting items in the bathroom and start coughing loudly. When the next passenger sees it, explain that you’ve just “picked up a little stomach bug” from your travels. Then, secure a paper mask around your mouth and nose.

Walk onto the plane and immediately ask the flight attendant for a couple of airsick bags. When she hands you one, hold up a crumpled up Sizzler’s Buffet receipt and explain that you’re “going to need a LOT more than that!” Mutter that the clam linguine was a bit tangier than usual and that you knew you should’ve taken those damn lactose pills.

At Your Destination

In the native language, write, “These people are crazy! Do not help them!” on a piece of paper. Find a local and tell them that your kind taxi driver wrote out directions to your next destination, but you need help translating. See whether the local sides with you or the note. Or, transcribe the words, “Can you please help me find the red light district?” and see how well the local knows his way around town!

This one is a prank against Canada – since they unjustifiably have the friendly reputation in comparison to the USA. Whenever possible, yell in a rude manner, “This would NEVER happen in CANADA!” all while stirring up a crowd. Receive a small portion size? “This would NEVER happen in CANADA!” Shove people in the streets while scoffing, “Get out of my way! People would NEVER walk like this in CANADA!” Together, we can turn the tide of Canada’s international reputation.

Selfie stick jousting: Get a few friends together and invest in a multiple selfie sticks to walk around with in a touristy area. Whenever you see a fellow tourist with a selfie stick, instigate a sword fight or a joust. Run towards strangers with the selfie stick while yelling, “THIS IS SPARTAAA!” If the strangers run away, you can pretend not to know your friends and simulate a spontaneous duel. Props if you’re actually in Sparta.

Attempt to pay for things in baseball or tarot cards. Explain that these are really valued and work as currency in your home country.

Hold a map in front of you and follow a stranger walking around for an entire day. If they stop and stare at you, trace your fingers along the map and do not make eye contact with them. Narrate the journey with, “no… no… this can’t be right” and “hmm… I would have gone left but alright.” If they go into a building, simply choose another leader.

Place a collect call to your family members and tell them that you’ve been abducted and they need to wire you $10,000. Tell them you’ve already lost a kidney because you couldn’t remember the country code to place the call. Blow all of the money partying with rich oil sheikhs in Dubai while hashtagging #WhoNeedsKidneys #IHaveTwo #GoFundMeKidney. This may not work with frugal parents or Liam Neeson’s children.

Light sage and start smoking the entire hostel dorm room or your CouchSurfing host’s apartment. Tell others that you can sense the presence of the poltergeist and are doing your roommates a favor. At night, while others are sleeping, begin to chant and lean over your victims until they wake up.

Walk around iconic landmarks dressed like a banana. I’ve actually done this one before.

What Would You Do?

There you have it. Any favorites? What one would you love to do?

Your imagination never ceases to amaze me! I am still laughing and getting flashbacks of the little girl who told her friends about her Witch grandma who could turn kids into stew if they were mean to animals and that sand monkeys stole shoes….and….that is only only the beginning. Oh Chantae, your blog is so mischievous and creative and so hilarious. Creative minds….OMG..travelers beware on April fools day..

  • Hahaha. The sand monkeys ARE real! It’s true 😛 someone commented on Twitter that these pranks would only get me added to the “No-Fly” list!

Great post. That costume you are sporting in front of the Coliseum is a little freaky though…lol

But bananas are good for you!

I really like the idea of putting a clothesline up across the aisle of the seat you are sitting in, that suggestion had me laughing out loud! I am going on a trip with some of my old college buddies and I have been in the market for some good practical jokes I can play on them, we used to do that to each other all the time while we were in college! I will be sure to bring a clothesline on the trip and put it over one of my buddy’s seats and see what the airline attendant thinks!

Hilarious!!! Do let me know how it goes 😀

5 travel-related Aprils Fool’s Day pranks — were you fooled?

by Sam Doyon | Apr 1, 2017 | all , dontrepost , in the news | 5 comments

Even though it’s not my favorite, here are 4 travel-related April Fool’s Day pranks from this year:

1. The Emirates triple decker

Per Emirates Facebook page, they’re introducing the world’s first triple decker airplane:

Emirates unveils plans for the world’s largest commercial aircraft. The triple-decker APR001 includes a swimming pool, games room, gym and park.

Emirates-Triple-Decker

I mean, I guess if you’re already carrying water for showers, what’s a little extra water to fill a pool? 😉

2. Bucklr, by Southwest

Introducing Bucklr, a new dating app that makes connections click. pic.twitter.com/Mu2z5Ajur4 — Southwest Airlines (@SouthwestAir) April 1, 2017

Up for a little romance? Southwest’s got you covered!

3. WestJet rebrands as…Canada Air?

Effective immediately, we are now Canada Air. Learn more about how we’re rebranding as the #MostCanadian airline – https://t.co/LLclRMqvDS pic.twitter.com/d1VVcELzoZ — Canada Air (@WestJet) March 31, 2017

I wonder how Air Canada would feel about this? WestJet seems to have gone all out, changing both their Twitter and Facebook in hono(u)r of this very momentous day.

4. Germany to defect to GMT

In what is likely a jab at the United Kingdom’s “brexit”, the German embassy in London tweeted:

pic.twitter.com/az19IyfoXp — GermanEmbassyLondon (@GermanEmbassy) April 1, 2017

5. Delta shoots for Mars

Once you fly to six continents across the globe, what’s stopping you from interstellar travel? Not much, if you’re Delta !

ATLANTA, April 1, 2017 – Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), no longer content to offer the industry’s most thoughtful customer service, most innovative products and most reliable performance only on its home planet, is planning to expand service to Mars in the summer of 2017. This historic network expansion will be the first offered between planets by an Earth-based airline. “We continuously strive to offer our customers convenient ways to travel to their destination of choice, whether that be to Middle America to visit Mom, or to the Red Planet to search for signs of life,” a Delta spokesperson said. “It’s a bold move that comes with a few logistical challenges and an aggressive timeline, but Delta people have shown again and again they can handle anything.” Delta’s planned service is contingent on regulatory approvals from the U.S. government, United Nations Security Council, Star Fleet Command and the Galactic Empire. And also the development of a landing facility, any type of infrastructure and an atmosphere that can sustain Earthlings.

Remember, it’s April 1st, so take everything you read today with a grain of salt!

Were you fooled today? If so, who got you? Let us know below!

I played a good one on my friends and family…. I’m currently on a two week trip around the world and while in Bangkok I checked in to BKK saying I was traveling to Pyongyang. I did a good couple lines about how I kept this a secret until that moment because I didn’t want anyone to talk me out of it, then I posted a link to a video I said explained my rationale for visiting North Korea. Those who did follow my link were directed to a video of Rick Astley’s “Never gonna give you up.” Funny thing is a lot of people didn’t follow the link to be Rick Rolled and thought I was serious. I definitely got a kick out of it and I think my friends did too.

Dan Miller

The RickRoll is a great staple of April Fool’s Day – good one! 🙂

A weird thing happened after I posted it tho, it took about 20 minutes for it to show up on my feed. I wouldn’t be surprised if DHS looked at this first. We’ll see if the CBP has a sense of humor when I come back home haha

Anyone see the one for Wyndham? https://www.extraholidays.com/promotion-april-live-in-local.aspx?lid=live-in&gaevent=eh-home-banner-live-in-local

John the Wanderer

I would love to travel on the plane with the swimming pool! Ha.

The best April Fools ad I saw was a couple years ago when Caribou Coffee introduced clear coffee so you don’t stain you teeth getting your caffeine fix. Did you catch that one?

Top Ten Travel Themed April Fools Pranks

It takes a lot of imagination, time and effort to pull of an amazing April Fool’s prank and we can’t help but admire these amazing travel pranks that have been pulled off over the past few years; we’re sure there’ll be more in store over the next couple of years, starting today.

In celebration of April 1st, here are a few pranks that have been played by airlines and other travel industry folk over the years. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Virgin Atlantic – Glass Bottomed Airplanes

One of the more famous pranks of recent years would be the glass-bottomed planes from Virgin Atlantic. They made headlines with the “world’s first glass-bottomed plane”. Images of the new aircraft were broadcast far and wide, with promises of a glass-topped aircraft to follow, so passengers could see the stars at night. The prank was of course a success; it was such an appealing concept! And of course if anyone was going to launch a glass-bottomed plane, it would be Richard Branson who was quoted saying “I'm thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first”.

WestJet – Child-Free Cabins

WestJet ’s 2012 April 1 st offering was called Kargo Kids, an initiative to help people have much more peaceful flights. The idea is that kids are placed into a toboggan and whisked off into a child-friendly cabin inside the cargo hold, allowing adults to travel in peace and quiet. Inside the cabin would be child counsellors, a healthy selection of toys, and even “a state of the art feed trough”, making sure the kids are kept safe and sound. Who said anything about wishful thinking?

 TTG – Hovering Hotel

2009 say this now infamous gag which was unleashed on the world. Cooked up by TTG Digital , it involved a planned “hover hotel” finding a home in Dubai, yup you read that right, a “hover hotel”. This 20-room boutique accommodation was to hover above the ground to test the waters, and was to be expanding should it prove to be enough of a success. It wasn't going to float a few inches up like a hovercraft though – it was said to be anchored at a kilometre in the air! If only...

Museum of Hoaxes - The Internet

This one here is for all you armchair travellers out there (don’t you just love the internet!?). Created in 1997, the Museum of Hoaxes catalogues history's most notorious pranks, some dating back as far as the Middle Ages. The website's April Fool Archive gives a year by year account of the holiday throughout history. As for other internet hoaxes, there are far too many to mention, but we hear there's a Nigerian bank which still needs some money wired.

Google Treasure Map

The video says it all really. This prank came from Google and was based on the premise that they had unearthed a previously-lost treasure map that once belonged to Captain Kidd .

The prank was amazingly intricate – people were to head to Google Maps, click the “Treasure” button and then decipher a number of riddles and symbols to find the secret. Unfortunately, all this teamwork didn't pay off; the “treasure” was this:

Air Asia's "Haggle Fares"

A couple of years back Air Asia advertised their new “Haggle Fares” which would allow people to turn up at the airport on the day they were hoping to travel and negotiate on the prices they were to pay. Not only does this seem like a too true to believe deal but Air Asia took it that step further in including “hints and tips” provided to help you get a lower fare – one was “hide your luggage and act like you don’t need a flight.”

South West USA, Hot Air Balloons Replace Planes

The US airline South West announced that they were planning on starting a more laid-back approach to air travel – hot air balloons would form their newest fleet of carriers. Passengers would  essentially be allowed to take the “scenic” route in comparison to your somewhat closed air plane travel. Best part however is that they do warn that travel time will depend on the wind speed on the day, but it’s not like you were in a rush anyway! You may have to settle in for the long haul on lengthier flights; just imagine all that beautiful scenery you’d get to see though!

Spaghetti Grows on Trees, Ticino, Switzerland

Ticino in Southern Switzerland served as the setting for one of the biggest hoaxes ever pulled by a news agency. On April Fools' Day in 1957, BBC broadcast a 3-minute segment showing a Swiss family harvesting spaghetti from trees and discussing how the bumper harvest was made possible by a mild winter and the near eradication of the spaghetti weevil. Some eight million people tuned in, and the news network received hundreds of calls the next day, some questioning the story and others asking for more information on how to best grow their own spaghetti trees.

The Branson Holiday Currency

In an attempt to curb the frustration experienced with exchanging currencies, Virgin Holidays in 2012 announced the future launch of a new currency – the Branson. The artwork was to reflect the different types of holiday offered (city breaks, beach getaways, and cruises), and you would get two Branson to the pound. The Branson was to be accepted in all Virgin Holidays destinations! Isn’t he a funny one, Sir Branson?

Pay-As-You-Go Cars

Now listen to this, with a pay-as-you-go car you won’t have to pay for the time, just for the distance you travel! To get around the potential lack of coins in your purses, the pay-as-you-go cars company were to offer deliveries of “bags of pound coins”… talk about being dubious!

Happy April Fools!

Just kidding, it’s tomorrow.

We love a good pull of the leg on April Fools and we’re a particularly lucky bunch of folks, being in the travel industry and all, because we reckon us lot are some of the best at it when it comes to a good old prank on April 1st. To celebrate one of the best days of the year, we’ve rounded up what we think are some of the best April Fools we’ve been treated to by airlines over the years, from Virgin (you know it’s gonna be good!) to an airline you might not have ever heard of before…

Qantas finally spelt their name correctly

travel april fools

Boy, do we have some pub quiz facts for you! Not only is Qantas the third oldest airline in the world, but its name today comes from an acronym to shorten their original, much more wordy name – Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services. So, actually, they do have a good reason for not having a U after Q, even if it bugs you! Still, in 2015, Qantas (sorry, Quantas) announced it had changed its name to include the U, and members of the grammar police around the world rejoiced….that is, until they all realised what the date was. And then they went back to being angry again.

Virgin Australia gave us what we really want…

… not extra legroom, but furry four-legged pals marching up and down the aisles! Back in 2017, Virgin Australia got us when they said that they were super excited to introduce their world-first initiative: a canine crew member would be joining their flight attendants in the sky to give passengers a very warm welcome, a pawshake, and to generally help you pass the time by being cuties. They’ll even keep your place in line for the loo!

Okay, we didn’t fall for this because it was believable , we just really, really, really wanted it to be true.

Today we are excited to unleash our new Virgin Australia Canine Crew in a world first initiative. pic.twitter.com/d1GCIbd3qG — Virgin Australia (@VirginAustralia) March 31, 2017

They also gave us something we’d rather pass on, to be honest…

… if you can’t avoid exercise 38,000 feet in the air, then where can you? Yep, Virgin Australia were also behind the world’s first in-flight spinning class, and they even roped in Virgin Active to make it extra believable.

The idea was that instead of serving you a nice glass of wine or the bag of pretzels you really want, they’d give you a lovely leaflet telling you about all the class times. Lucky us. And those business class jammies you couldn’t wait to whip on? Nah, how about some gym clothes instead!

WestJet was all about payloads without paying loads

travel april fools

The award for most invested in April Fools might just have to go to WestJet for this one. With a full on swish webpage to back it up, in 2022 WestJet went out with a new venture they were boldly undertaking to take passengers on the long haul of long haul – no, not Down Under! Instead they were heading way up there, to somewhere beyond 38,000 feet – space, baby!

Welcome to WestJet-X.

For them, it was all about payloads without having to pay loads (only a measly $500k!), with a bunch of cost saving options like aisle seats and one-way tickets. But because this is WestJet, they weren’t going to skimp out on all the usual stuff you’ve come to know and love – WiFi so you can TikTok from space, an in-flight entertainment system so you can watch Planet of the Apes , and everyone’s fave bag of pretzels, just with a side of zero gravity.

And how were they doing this? Well, it was quite simple, actually. They’d made a plane that was “aerodynamically-er” designed. And to reassure customers, it even came complete with ‘reviews’ – Elon Musk called it ‘a must’, but a flat-earther was less than impressed, and was “very disappointed”.

Between you and us, we don’t know what’s crazier, the whole concept or the price of a one-way ticket!

Virgin Atlantic did the ultimate don’t-look-down

Virgin sure do like their world-firsts! Back in 2013, Mr Branson announced that they would now be running a domestic service to Scotland. In a glass-bottomed plane. And what better way to experience the beauty of Scotland as you fly above it?

The idea was to give their passengers the sensation of ‘walking on air’, or the worst case of vertigo in their lives. And they had their eyes on expansion too, with a hope that they’d be able to roll out the glass-bottomed floor across the rest of the fleet in time.

For those of us who can’t handle the glass floor at Blackpool Tower, never mind 38,000 feet in the air, we’re actually pretty glad this one never made into the realm of reality…imagine the carnage if a crack came up!

Take the #LittleRed scenic service to Aberdeen, introducing our world first glass bottom plane http://t.co/MraAfmvJ6m pic.twitter.com/KfRstHNwls — virginatlantic (@VirginAtlantic) April 1, 2013

Virgin Australia said bye-bye to being seated next to the screaming kid…

… by giving them a class of their own. Yep, Virgin Australia made parents (and especially non-parents) the world over elated when they announced (in a scenario that we reckon is totally actually do-able, just saying) that they would now be offering a class on their flights, reserved just for kids. This adult-free zone was a place of hopscotch down the aisle, seats designed specifically with kicking in mind, and a teddy bear ordering service.

This prank was especially well received, with a whole bunch of you well and truly crestfallen when you realised that the kicking of your seat would, in fact, be continuing. One day…

And then there was a new kid on the aviation block: FLIKEA

travel april fools

Okay, so this isn’t an airline we actually have, but it’s the one we deserve! In 2017, everyone’s favourite place to get meatballs announced that it was launching its own airline, FLIKEA. We mean, with a name like that it’s practically meant to be! Their new low-cost carrier would take flatpack fans across the world, and would even take them on the world’s first non-stop flight from Sweden to Australia.

And because this is IKEA, the plane would follow their five dimensions of Democratic Design. Come on, repeat after us: exceptional form, quality, sustainability, function, and price! This, they said, would all lead to a reduction in aircraft weight and fuel requirement, reduced transit time, and lower ticket prices.

Our fave thing about this, though? Defo the plan to switch out your bog standard plane seats for that IKEA staple, the POÄNG armchair. Genius!

So these April Fools prank turned out to be a load of baloney, but our cheap flights are very real – come find them at Netflights.com!

April Fools’ Day: The roots of our silliest holiday

P eople have always been stymied about the origins of April Fools’ Day, dating back to the late Middle Ages (as far as academics could confidently say).

In 1760, the parody periodical Poor Robin’s Almanac astutely asked a question on everyone’s mind, including the line: “The First of April some do say/ Is set apart for all Fool’s Day/ But why the people call it so/ Nor I nor they themselves do know.”

From its origins — whether in Ancient Rome, medieval England, or Renaissance Europe — to today, April Fools’ Day has always capitalized on a long-held human tradition: silliness.

Nearly every culture has historically commemorated trickery, pranks, and jesting in some way, especially around the changing of the seasons.

Today, April 1 brings out tricksters in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and beyond, with their traditions ranging from superstitious to downright humiliating.

The murky origins of April Fools’

April Fools’ practices date at least back to Renaissance Europe and probably before. The holiday could be tied to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, a late-March celebration focused on resurrection that involved dressing up in costumes.

It may also have started with the Feast of Fools, a medieval celebration that mocked church hierarchy. It seems the holiday’s origins have always been up for debate.

Reader’s Digest noted that as far back as 1708, a British magazine received a reader letter inquiring, “Whence proceeds the custom of making April Fools?”

Even one of the most common theories on the origins of April Fools’ is itself an April 1st hoax: In 1983, a Boston University professor pranked an unsuspecting Associated Press reporter by feeding him the yarn that April Fools’ started as a jester-led celebration during the Roman emperor Constantine’s reign.

The AP ran the story, and though they quickly retracted it days later, many still believe the anecdote to be a fact.

What’s with April 1st?

This iconic date could be due to a calendar mix-up: quite appropriate for a trickery-themed holiday.

During the 1500s, France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, thus shifting the first day of the new year from April 1 to Jan. 1.

However, many were slow to adapt to the new changes—either out of stubbornness or the slow spread of word—and continued to celebrate the new year in April.

Some of the first references to April 1 as a designated holiday included a 1561 Flemish poem titled “Refrain on errand-day / which is the first of April” and a 1686 novel that makes an English reference to “Fooles holy day” on April 1.

Foolish traditions around the world

Because April Fools’ Day draws on the near-universal history of feasts and holidays that indulge in absurdity and tricks, it is celebrated widely around the world.

In notoriously prank-happy Scotland, April Fools’ is spread out over two days, Hunt the “Gowk” (or “cuckoo”) being the first. On April 1, friends attempt to trick each other into aimless deliveries, echoing that 1561 Flemish poem depicting the same. The second day, Taily Day, is possibly the origin of the all-too-familiar “kick me” sign many are pinned with on April Fools’.

In Greece, April Fools’ pranks have a more superstitious end, with successful pranks bringing a year’s worth of good luck to their schemers and rainfall on the day, marking widespread healing of maladies. This is closer in nature to Iran, which celebrates Sizdah Bedar on April 1, a New Year’s celebration that involves purging out the number 13.

Modern-day April Fools’

Many pranks are now taking place online rather than in person, with many people nowadays choosing satirical posts over physical gags.

As modern media has evolved and grown, so have the pranks: many media outlets have joined in on the joke, exponentially growing the reach of once-simple pranks.

Netflix, for one, has made a yearly tradition of sneaking in some antics. In 2017, it announced the addition of a livestream of Will Arnett narrating everyday tasks on the Netflix campus and pretending to have bought the actor Seth Rogen in 2018.

Rather than person-to-person pranks, many April Fools’ pranks are now going corporate, with large companies and brands seizing the opportunity to build a personal connection with their customers. Everyone from Amazon to Expedia has joined in on the fun in the last decade, raising the stakes every year.

Notable pranks gone wrong

April Fools’ pranks have been ambitious in scope as far back as 1698 when crowds of people were duped into traveling to the Tower of London to see lions being washed — an exotic phenomenon that would have been highly entertaining — if it were actually happening.

In 1957, the BBC broadcast a reel of farmers harvesting spaghetti from trees in Switzerland. In 1992, NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” had a convincing Richard Nixon impersonator announce a post-impeachment run for president.

Of course, some hoaxes and pranks have gone awry.

In 1749, when showgoers filled a London theater on the promise of witnessing a man squeeze into a bottle, they rioted when they realized there was no show after all. Centuries later, in 2003, an Ohio clothing store worker called her boss pretending that the store was being robbed; she was a little too convincing: Her employer called the police, and the worker was arrested on the spot.

All these pranks required a certain kind of bravado, perhaps too much for comfort. So whenever you dream up a new foolishness to pursue, remember to play nice and make sure no one gets hurt, including their feelings.

April Fools’ Day: The roots of our silliest holiday

Why is April Fools' Day celebrated? Here's how the prank-playing holiday came to be.

travel april fools

Playing pranks and tricks is an age-old tradition. There are so many ways to pull one over on your loved ones, whether you're tying their shoes' laces together or filling a closet with balloons.

But day stands out because it is dedicated to the pranksters and jokesters of the world: April Fools' Day falls on April 1 and gives people an excuse to carry out lighthearted fun. The holiday has existed for centuries, but how did it officially come to be?

Here's a history lesson on the holiday of hoaxes.

What is April Fools' Day?

Every year, April Fools' Day is celebrated on April 1. While its exact origins are unclear, many historians trace April Fools' back to 1582, the  History Channel  and the  Library of Congress  report.

That year, France changed its calendar system from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. According to the Julian calendar, each year began on the spring equinox, which usually fell  around April 1 . Under the Gregorian Calendar, however, the new year started  on January 1 .

In France, many were unaware of the calendar change and continued to celebrate the new year during the last week of March through April 1. These people were considered the " butt of jokes and hoaxes " and were named "April fools," according to the History Channel.

Others maintain that April Fools' derives from the Roman festival of Hilaria, which is Latin for "joyful." Hilaria was celebrated at the end of March by devotees of the goddess Cybele, the History Channel reports. During the festival, followers would dress up in disguises and trick townspeople.

When is April Fools' Day celebrated? Here's why the holiday always falls on the same date.

Why is it called April Fools' Day?

While it is believed April Fools' became more established in the 1580s, the idea of pranking someone on this day was first referenced a few decades prior, according to the Library of Congress . A 1561 Flemish poem by Eduard De Dene chronicles a servant who was sent on a series of pointless errands. When the servant noticed that the date was April 1, he realized he had been sent on " fool’s errands ."

In 1686, John Aubrey mentions " Fooles Holy Day " in the book "Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme," writing "We observe it on the first of April."

April Fools' Day prank traditions

The "April fish" is one of many April Fools' pranks. It comes from the French " poisson d’avril ." Paper fish are often put on someone's back as a joke because the fish are said to be young and, therefore, easily caught. Those who get the fish placed on their backs are seen as gullible.

In Scotland, April Fools' Day spans two days. The first day is " Gowk Day ," referencing the gawk, or cuckoo bird, which is a symbol of the fool. The second day is " Tailie Day " when people will play pranks, such as pinning a tail on someone or putting a "kick me" sign on their back, the History Channel reports.

Over time bank stocks have been relatively safe investments, as they offer products and services that most people need. How do you choose a good bank stock?  1. Look at the bank’s profitability First, you want to be sure the bank is even profitable. To do that, you can use the following metrics.  Return on equity (ROE): this metric tells you how much profit a bank makes from its shareholder’s equity. The higher this metric, the more efficient a bank is using its stakeholder’s money.  Return on assets (ROA): the ROA tells you the overall profit a bank makes in relation to its assets. The higher the ROA, the more profit a bank makes from its assets.  Efficiency ratio: the efficiency ratio tells you how much revenue a bank uses towards its operating costs. The lower the efficiency ratio, the more revenue a bank theoretically has.  2. Assess the bank’s risks  One of the biggest risks a bank has is losing money on an outstanding loan. • Dividend Stocks What are dividend stocks? Dividend stocks are stocks that send you a sum of money (usually quarterly, but sometimes annually) simply for owning shares in the company. To be clear, this money isn’t a capital gain, which you earn when share prices go up or when you sell the stock for profit. A dividend is more like a “bonus” that comes to you in the form of cash or more shares in the company’s stock. Which companies have dividend stocks? It’s important to note that not all companies pay out dividends. Dividend-paying companies are usually older, more established corporations that have a long track history of positive growth and expansion. Usually when a company earns more money than it can reinvest in itself, it creates a dividend paying policy for shareholders. For that reason, you’ll rarely see growth companies, small caps, or start-ups issue dividends. In Canada, some top dividend stocks include: Procter & Gamble Pembina Pipeline Brookfield Infrastructure Partners Fortis Inc. Polaris Infrastructure [KevelPitch/] Check back here for the most up to date information about dividend stocks in Canada.
  • Energy Stocks What are energy stocks?  Energy stocks represent partial ownership in companies that supply electricity and fuel for the global economy. The energy sector in Canada is vast, comprising a large portion of the TSX. Energy stocks include:  Electric utility companies Liquefied natural gas companies Natural gas companies  Oil companies Renewable energy companies Solar energy companies  How can you pick energy stocks? 1. Look for companies with a promising future  It’s no surprise that the energy sector is under intense scrutiny. With climate change at the front of many people’s minds (from governments to investors), energy companies, old and new, are constantly adapting to a new world. Many people want cleaner energy. And it’s the energy sector’s challenge to make clean energy available — and profitable, too.  For that reason, investors will do well to look for innovative companies that are actively solving contemporary energy problems. Though we’re not suggesting investors ignore bigger companies in oil or natural gas, we are suggesting you keep an eye on the future as you’re picking your energy stocks.  Given the direction the world is going, ask yourself: who will be around in 20, 30, or even 40 years? That’s one of the biggest questions…
  • Metals and Mining Stocks What are mining and mineral stocks? Mining and mineral stocks represent partial ownership in companies that find, extract, and process minerals and materials. The mining sector makes up a large portion of Canadian stocks, with the TSX having more mining stocks than any other market in the world. Here are some minerals these companies extract:  Precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, palladium  Industrial metals: iron, ore, zinc, cobalt, lithium, nickel, copper, aluminum  Construction materials: sand, crushed stone, limestone Energy materials: coal, oil sands, uranium Fertilizers: boron, potash, phosphate  How can you find good mining stocks? 1. Know the mining industry  The mining industry is fairly complex. Not only do mining companies operate in a manner distinct from any other sector — they literally dig into the ground, not sit in swivel chairs — but also the vocabulary and industry terms can be complex, too.  From the mining process to machinery to the minerals themselves, mining investors will do well to know exactly what a mining company does before buying its stocks.  2. Analyze its financial strength  Investors should find mining companies that can withstand economic downturns and recessions. Two factors that will help you assess a mining company’s finances are production…
  • Tech Stocks What are tech stocks?  Tech stocks represent partial ownership in companies that produce, distribute, manufacture, and research new technology. The sector is vast and ever-changing with plenty of exciting opportunities for growth. Some examples of tech companies include:  Artificial intelligence Blockchain Cybersecurity Computers and software Cloud services The internet The internet-of-things (IoT) Self-driving technologies Semiconductors Smartphones Why invest in tech stocks?  The tech sector isn’t as stable as, say, banking. But that’s not always a bad thing. Tech companies, from startups to big corporations, often promise significant growth. And with new technologies moving as fast as they have in the last few decades, that growth could be exponentially large.  Tech stocks can also help you diversify your investment portfolio. Investing in tech companies exposes you to a different sector in the market, helping you capitalize on gains, as well as minimize overall losses when market downturns affect other sectors. One example of diversification in action: tech stocks performed fairly well during the recent pandemic-induced recession, whereas other sectors, such as banking and energy, took a hit.  Finally, with the sheer amount of great Canadian tech companies, you have plenty of choices between value and growth. If you lean more on…

3 Roaring Stocks to Hold for the Next 20 Years

These three growth stocks have surged in share price in the last year and yet have proven they can keep doing it time and time again.

If you’re looking for long-term growth, you’ve come to the right place. There are companies that have been around for 20 years and yet have at least another 20 years of surging growth ahead of them. Today, let’s take a look at three of them.

First off, let’s look at major winner on the TSX today: goeasy ( TSX:GSY ). Shares of goeasy stock have been surging the last few years, and yet, it’s been around for decades! The loan and rent-to-own provider started out with home and appliance rentals. However, it’s since expanded.

The stock now offers growth from its massive loan portfolio. Quarter after quarter the company has seen record loan growth, and that doesn’t look to be slowing down. Whether it’s higher interest rates leaving Canadians looking for the best deal or lower interest rates creating more opportunities to take out loans, goeasy stock is on board.

So, with shares up 104% in the last year alone while still trading at 12.47 times earnings and a dividend yield of 2.59%, it’s certainly one to hold for the next 20 years.

Constellation Software

Another huge winner of the last while has been Constellation Software ( TSX:CSU ). This tech stock has been climbing for decades. In fact, there has been very little downward movement, even through incredibly volatile times.

This comes from CSU stock’s strong operations, which involve software acquisitions in niche markets. This allows the stock to corner these markets, providing pretty much the only option for essential software demand. Again, the company has proven its worth time and time again.

CSU stock has been around since the 1990s and, in that time, has climbed steadily. So, with shares up 32% in the last year, it’s another I would certainly pick up for more growth in the future.

Finally, if you want another top growth stock, I would look into Celestica ( TSX:CLS ). Similarly to CSU stock, Celestica stock has been around for a while, and in that time, it has seen fairly stable growth. Yet in the last year, the company has surged in share price.

This comes from providing support to the semiconductor industry. The company is involved in electronics manufacturing services (EMS). It provides supply chain management and aftermarket services through a vast range of industries. This includes providing the manufacturing, assembly and testing of semiconductor-based products.

With the demand for semiconductors remaining at an all-time high and unlikely to come down, Celestica stock looks like a strong winner for investors today. Shares have rocketed up 314% in the last year alone. However, look back and there has been even more growth over the last few decades — all while trading at just 16.41 times earnings. So, it’s another company to consider for future growth.

Bottom line

It can be tempting to view growth stocks as companies that will eventually drop. Yet while these growth stocks might dip, I would argue over time they’ve proven their worth. And that makes them excellent options for long-term investors on the TSX today.
