The full Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film is finally coming to streaming — with 4 bonus surprise songs

"Cardigan" and four songs from the acoustic set will be included in the "Taylor's Version" cut of the movie, which is heading to Disney+.

taylor swift concert movie eras tour

It's Swiftmas in February!

Just days after announcing her 11th studio album , The Tortured Poets Department , Taylor Swift has unveiled the long-awaited streaming plans for her blockbuster Eras Tour concert film .

Disney+ announced Wednesday that it will be the exclusive streaming home of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) , a cut of the film that will present the concert in its entirety for the first time. The new version of the movie, which also includes the song "Cardigan" and four additional acoustic songs, will make its streaming debut March 15. Swift shared the news on social media shortly after Disney's announcement.

The Eras Tour film, directed by Sam Wrench, grossed more than $260 million at the global box office, making it the top selling concert film of all time.

Buda Mendes/TAS23/Getty Images

In making the announcement, Disney CEO Bob Iger said, "The Eras Tour has been a true phenomenon that has and continues to thrill fans around the world, and we are very excited to bring this electrifying concert to audiences wherever they are, exclusively on Disney+."

The film debuted in theaters Oct. 13, and noticeably excluded five songs from the Eras Tour set list as it was performed in Los Angeles in August, when the film was shot: "No Body No Crime," "Wildest Dreams," "The Archer," "Cardigan" and "Long Live." When it later headed to VOD rentals on Swift's birthday on Dec. 13, a new version of the film featured the performances of "Wildest Dreams," "The Archer" and "Long Live" tacked on at the end, but not the other two songs.

Given that this new Taylor's Version of the film is being touted as being shown "in its entirety for the first time," it stands to reason that all the missing tracks will finally take their rightful place in the film, in addition to four additional acoustic songs. But since "No Body No Crime" is not explicitly mentioned and "Cardigan" is, it would appear "NBNC"will likely be the only song to not make the cut, presumably since it was a performance with Haim unique to only a small handful of Eras Tour dates, and the concert film is more inclusive of the tour as a whole.

As for the four new acoustic performances in the film, on each of the three nights the concert was filmed in L.A., Swift performed two different surprise songs during the acoustic set, meaning there were six different possibilities for the film in that section of the show. In the original theatrical and and VOD rental versions, only "You're On Your Own, Kid" and "Our Song" made the cut. That means that the remaining acoustic performances of "I Can See You," "Maroon," "You Are in Love," and "Death by a Thousand Cuts" will likely be in the film somewhere.

Everything You'll Want to Know About Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Concert Film

Swifties rejoice: you can finally relive the Eras Tour in your living room.

taylor swift concert movie eras tour

I am a die-hard Swiftie . Over the past decade of my life, I've analyzed her endless Easter eggs, had Taylor top my Spotify Wrapped for years, and you better believe I checked out the Eras Tour this summer. The concert was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I made and traded friendship bracelets with fellow Swifties and sang every word to every song while I was at the show. I even went to the Eras Tour concert film and relived every second of the extravaganza.

Swift's highly anticipated concert flick premiered in theaters earlier this fall, and it smashed records. CNBC  reported  that it's the highest-grossing domestic concert film ever, bringing in between $95 million and $97 million. Recently, Swift announced that the Eras Tour will be coming to living rooms, as the film has been released for rent on several on-demand services.

If you got snubbed in that Ticketmaster debacle , or if you just want to relive the magic that was the Eras Tour, I've got you covered with all the important information you'll want to know before attending from the comfort of your own home.

For more entertainment-related fare, here are  10 things you can do to save money on streaming , and here are the best smart TVs of 2023 .

What is the Eras Tour?

Swift's stadium tour swept through more than a dozen US cities plus Mexico City this summer. The Eras Tour is a love letter to her impressive musical career and the fans who have seen her through it. The numbers indicate the tour draws massive public appeal. The tour is projected to gross $1 billion , including Swift's overseas tour next spring.

That billion dollars is, by all accounts, a fantastic measure of Swift's power, but it doesn't even account for the thousands of fans who attended her concerts from parking lots and bridges outside of the concert venues this year. Already, Swift's journey around the US has proved an economic boon to host cities.

So, what is the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film?

Filmed over her Los Angeles dates at the SoFi stadium, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is a two-hour, 45-minute chronicle of her hit tour. For fans who are familiar with the tour, this raises some questions as to what has been cut from the film. The concert I attended ran for about 3 hours, but by the end of the tour, it was about three and a half hours long. Curious fans finally have their answers.

The film had its premiere on Oct. 11, and we finally know what's been cut. Be warned, I'm going to get into some major spoilers for the concert film, so if you want to be surprised while you watch, just skip this section.

It looks like Swift has nixed five songs from the setlist she performed the nights she recorded the film. Entertainment Weekly reports that the songs No Body, No Crime; Long Live; Wildest Dreams; The Archer and Cardigan were all cut from the concert film. Fans of Long Live do have some recompense; it plays over tour bloopers and videos of fans during the credits.

Of the six surprise songs she recorded (Swift performs these during the rotating acoustic portion of the show), the songs Our Song and You're On Your Own, Kid ended up making the final cut. Fans can also expect to see shortened costume changes and transitions between Swift's different eras in the film.

How long is Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film in theaters?

Swift's concert film hit theaters worldwide on Oct. 13. According to Insider, the film had to be shown in theaters for four weeks following its release. Insider said Swift circumvented Hollywood studios and negotiated the film's distribution directly with AMC, allowing her to have more control. Time has reported that Swift's concert film has brought home an impressive $248.9 million at the box office, cementing itself as the highest-grossing concert film at the US box office. Given this accomplishment, it's safe to say the concert film will be hanging around theaters for a while.

How can I get Swift movie tickets?

You can buy tickets to the concert film where you would ordinarily buy tickets to most movies, either online or at an in-person box office.

Swift's website has links to sites where you can buy tickets through AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Fandango. You could check your local indie theater's website too, to see whether it's showing the concert film.

Fan reaction to ticket sales was swift (pardon the pun). Wanda Gierhart Fearing,  Cinemark 's chief marketing and content officer, told me that the company saw "frenzied traffic to [its] website and app the moment tickets went on sale" and that "we are ready for Swifties to be enchanted by this concert film in the unprecedented number of auditoriums we have booked to meet demand."

How much do tickets cost?

Adult tickets go for $19.89, which is a nod to the year of Swift's birth and the title of her fifth studio album, 1989. Fans also know that the album 1989 is about to get the Taylor's Version treatment, with the artist's rerecording of the album dropping 14 days after the film hits theaters. Seniors and children's tickets go for $13.13, a nod to Swift's lucky number.

Right now, it's unclear whether subscribers to paid theater subscriptions like Regal Unlimited will be able to use the deals available to them on tickets for this film, given the special pricing. In a FAQ on AMC's website, the company said that this film is excluded from the company's A-List program's reservation feature.

Cinemark confirmed to CNET that members of the Cinemark Movie Club can apply all standard benefits of the membership.

Can I treat this like a normal concert?

While a concert film can be exciting and almost feel like a real concert, it's best practice to be respectful of other theatergoers both in your showing and in other showings at the theater.

This doesn't mean you can't keep up with other Eras Tour practices, like wearing a fun costume based on Swift's songs and lyrics or making and trading friendship bracelets with other Swifties. You could even quietly sing along and dance in your seat, as long as you're considerate of viewers around you and don't interrupt others' viewing experience.

If you're attending the film at an AMC theater, then you're in luck. The company has provided you with guidelines for how to behave during the film -- and it all boils down to being respectful of those around you.

I saw the concert film at an indie theater, and in my experience, people were pretty quiet during the film. There was no singing loud enough for me to detect, and the only people who danced in my theater were several smaller children. Based on my experience, I recommend going in with the expectation of watching this film just like you would any other movie.

If you just have to sing and dance along to all of your favorite Taylor Swift hits (which I totally understand the urge to do) you do have some options. In a press release distributed to CNET, Cinemark announced Private Swiftie Parties -- an extension of its Private Watch Parties offering -- that allow fans to reserve an entire auditorium for singing and dancing. In the release, Fearing said "our larger-than-life screens and captivating surround sound deliver a most enchanting environment to sing and dance along with friends and family to the concert of the decade." Right now, these Private Swiftie Parties are on sale on Cinemark's website and app. The watch parties are available at participating locations for $800 and can accommodate up to 40 fans.

How can I watch the concert film at home?

This week, Swift announced that the Eras Tour concert film, extended version, will be available to rent on Dec. 13 (none other than the singer's birthday) on Apple TV, Vudu, Prime Video, Xfinity, Google Play and YouTube. Fans can expect some extra content from the extended version, with previously cut songs Wildest Dreams, The Archer and Long Live being added back in. Renting the concert film will set you back $19.89, and you'll be able to stream the film for 48 hours.

There's not an exact date on when we can expect the concert film on streaming services, although TV Line reports that Swift can't put her concert film on streaming platforms for 13 weeks after the film comes out. Jan. 12, 2024, would be the earliest possible date the film could wind up on a streaming service.

As a seasoned Swiftie, my recommendation is to keep a close eye on any hints Swift might give over the next few months for a streaming release date. Her well-known Easter eggs have given fans clues to album release dates and music video drops, so it's possible she'll use one to reveal the film's streaming debut.

The Secret Art of Turning a Concert Into a Film (Taylor’s Version)

Movies like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” rely on savvy tricks and sophisticated techniques to capture a semblance of the live experience.

A woman in a spangly outfit and high-heeled boots is standing atop a high platform holding a microphone to her mouth and an arm out. There are billowing purple and orange set pieces, and the image is repeated three times as a huge crowd watches.

By Calum Marsh

Taylor Swift’s globe-spanning Eras Tour is one of the musical events of the year, drawing record-breaking crowds and making headlines the world over since it kicked off in Glendale, Ariz., in March. Rabid demand has made procuring a ticket notoriously difficult, if not practically impossible . But starting Friday, Swifties will have a more accessible opportunity to catch a glimpse of the live phenomenon, when the concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is released by AMC Theaters — a moviegoing event that is widely expected to be a box office smash.

Filmed over three nights in August at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., and directed by Sam Wrench, “The Eras Tour,” like most concert films, aims to capture some of the magic of seeing the artist perform live. “The main thing we’re trying to do is provide the theatrical audience with the best seat in the house,” John Ross, the rerecording mixer on “The Eras Tour” and a veteran of many other hit concert films, including Jonathan Demme’s “Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids,” said by phone. “If you were to attend a concert and get the premium seat, that’s my job, to convey that image sonically and situationally.”

But capturing a live performance is not as straightforward as simply setting up some cameras and microphones and recording what transpires onstage. The demands of a film are incredibly complicated, and faithfully reproducing the look and sound of a concert for the screen is an arduous and painstaking process for the filmmakers and their crews. It’s a delicate proposition — a proposition some filmmakers believe is inherently doomed.

“The idea itself, to film a concert, is a bad idea,” said Jonas Akerlund, a film and music video director who made the concert movies “On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay-Z Live” and “Taylor Swift: The 1989 World Tour Live.”

He explained, “It will never, ever be as good as the live experience. It’s basically like trying to film fireworks — everybody knows that seeing it live is not the same as seeing it on a TV screen.” But, Akerlund added, the concert film can have value, if looked at in a different way. “You can make it an equally good experience, but it has to be a filmic or cinematic experience rather than trying to compete with the live experience.”

The secret to cinematic merit, he said, is having the time and means to shoot it like a proper movie. That means hiring upward of 40 camera operators; shooting over multiple nights; deploying drones, Spidercams and GoPros; and setting aside a separate dress rehearsal day, when the artist plays without a crowd to shoot extra footage, like close-ups that might not have been possible during the live show. All of the footage is assembled in the editing room “with the precision of a four-minute music video” to create the illusion that what you’re seeing was unfolding in real time. “I guess it’s cheating a little bit,” Akerlund said.

These kinds of cheats are common and, to hear filmmakers tell it, necessary. When the “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu made “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” he shot the performance and the audience on separate nights, then edited them together because that, paradoxically, made the audience’s reaction feel more authentic. “I always love concert films where it feels like the audience is really there,” he said. But because of the cameras, the sound recording equipment and the lighting, “audiences don’t react as big” as they would on an ordinary night. “You try to emulate what it feels like,” he said.

One of the most surprising things about the making of concert films is just how much tends to be emulated, even simulated, rather than merely captured as is. The actual sound of music being played live in an arena can’t merely be taped: “just a recording of the room would be useless,” Ross said. Instead, dozens of microphones — sometimes more than 100 for larger sites — record the vocals, instruments and crowd on separate tracks, and a rerecording mixer carefully blends them together, adding reverb and echo to simulate the sound of the space.

In other words, the tone of the room is essentially applied like a filter to the raw sounds recorded from the artist onstage. This filter, known as impulse response, takes readings from actual physical places, then “synthetically reproduces the sound of a real space like a club or stadium,” said Jake Davis, the lead mix engineer at SeisMic Sound, an audio facility in Nashville that specializes in concert films.

Mixers like Jake and his father, Tom Davis, the SeisMic founder, have a lot of control over the sound in a concert film, and making adjustments is a large part of their job. Some are minor refinements. Others are more like corrections: They make the concert film sound more like what the artist wanted than what necessarily occurred on the night it was filmed. “When you lock something down for a DVD or for streaming or whatever it is, once it’s done, it lives forever,” Tom Davis said. “It never goes away. So you kind of want it to be as good as it can be.”

Mixers can blend parts of a song recorded on one night with parts from another night to create the best combined version. They can fix an errant flat note in a guitar solo by manipulating it in postproduction, or they can ask an artist to rerecord a weak vocal in a studio, layering it into the mix so that it sounds as if it had been delivered live. “We copy, cut and paste, like you do on a word processor,” Davis said. “If there was a little clam in the first chorus, but he did it fine in the second chorus in the same part, we can cut and paste that. We can do vocal maintenance. We can fix a little pitch issue, or bend a note a little bit.”

Although sound mixers record the crowd with a bevy of microphones hidden around the arena, it’s possible — and indeed, common — to exaggerate the sound of that audience, to artificially give the cheering fans some extra kick. “It’s kind of a dirty secret,” Davis said. “But the sound of the real audience is weak. It’s not enough. You end up adding to it, pumping it up. There’s something psychological to hearing other humans having a good time and reacting — it’s like a sitcom and a laugh track.” Jake Davis said that the ideal balance is to “start with the real reaction” and then simply “make it bigger and more obvious.”

Of course, part of the appeal of a live show, even on film, is the impression of reality, and a sense of truth is critical. “The goal of the mix is to enhance the energy of the performance that exists as it went down in the best way possible,” Jake Davis said. “You maintain some element of rawness while taking out things that are distracting, the nuances of a wrong note or a background singer being a little bit off.”

While the film version strives to be “as good as it can be for the rest of history,” he said, “there’s a fine line between correcting something a little bit and making it perfect, because it’s not going to be perfect live.” It’s a bit like touching up a portrait in Photoshop: it’s tempting to clear blemishes, but too much airbrushing can make you look fake.

Paul Dugdale, the director of “Shawn Mendes: Live in Concert” and “Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour,” said that while some live shows might lend themselves to “maximum authenticity” as an approach, other huge pop concerts don’t emphasize the authentic in the same way. “For shows that are quite theatrical, there’s a level of artifice — they’ve got screens, they’ve got pyrotechnics, they’ve got costumes, all that kind of stuff,” he said. “For someone like Taylor, I think that allows you to explore further in terms of camera angles and putting the audience in different positions.”

A Swift concert, Dugdale pointed out, can last more than three hours, which affords the director more latitude in how to approach the film formally. “You can create texture just like the live show has texture,” he said. “Sometimes you can go heavy-handed with the director’s hand, and sometimes you can completely let go of the steering wheel and let the artist take over.”

Despite the high level of difficulty, the job for filmmakers and sound engineers is quite thankless. The best concert films will, to the unwitting viewer, seem like nothing more than filmed concerts — the filmmaking itself remains invisible.

“The goal is that you don’t want people thinking about the fact that this was worked on or changed at all from what it was live,” Jake Davis told me. “You just want the audience to be immersed in the experience and to accept that it’s happening in front of them — to feel like they’re there.”

But Dugdale noted that however much he tries to plan out a concert shoot, the live aspect will always prove unpredictable. “Making these films, you can be as prepared as you can possibly be, but in the end you have to hold on for dear life and see how it turns out.”

How Is the Taylor Swift Eras Concert Movie Different From the Live Tour?

taylor swift concert movie eras tour

By Savannah Walsh

Taylor Swift

At times while watching Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , it’s difficult to detect what separates Taylor Swift ’s concert film from her live show. Each beckon sequined Swifties to point their phones forward as they sing along to every word of the roughly 40-song set list. And both have become blockbusters —the sold-out Eras Tour nearly broke Ticketmaster , while its companion movie presold more than $100 million in tickets a week before its premiere, already passing Justin Bieber: Never Say Never as the highest-grossing concert-film debut.

But while some fans had hoped that Swift would change nothing in the transfer from stadium to screen, a few necessary changes have been made to shave the three-hour-and-15-minute concert into a still supersized two hours and 45 minutes. So where are the blank spaces, exactly?

Naturally, the costume changes have been condensed, as have intros such as the extended piano lead-in to “Tolerate It.” Others have been retained in all their symbolic glory, like the snakes that slither Swift into her Reputation era.

Five songs in total were cut from Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: Swift’s 1989 hit “Wildest Dreams”; her performance of “No Body, No Crime” with opening act Haim; Lover ’s “The Archer”; Folklore ’s lead single, “Cardigan”; and Speak Now ’s “Long Live,” a track permanently added to the set list during Swift’s first show in Kansas City this July, which coincided with the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

I was in the audience that evening at Arrowhead Stadium, in which Swift unveiled the music video for Speak Now bonus track “I Can See You” and brought the video’s stars, Joey King and ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner, onstage. Those Kansas City shows may also have been ground zero for her romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce , but there’s no trace of their budding romance in the film or any behind-the-scenes Easter eggs.

Taylor Swift

In fact, as filmed by director Sam Wrench, all three hours are devoted to Swift and her fans alone. No celebrity guests are shown, including the musical collaborators Swift has invited to perform with her onstage, like Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner, and Ice Spice; and neither are Swift’s performances with any of her opening acts, which included Gracie Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers, with whom she would often sing their duet “Nothing New.”

The concert was filmed during Swift’s six-night stint at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles, back in August. There were a few song switches over the course of the Eras Tour’s first leg. “No Body, No Crime” replaced Evermore track “‘Tis the Damn Season” when Haim was opening for Swift during the SoFi shows, so that song is also missing. And Folklore ’s fate-brought-us-together track, “Invisible String,” was switched out for the rueful what-could-have-been ballad “The 1” after Swift’s split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn was publicized, meaning the former track has also been scrapped from the movie.

Each night on the Eras Tour, Swift would select a pair of surprise songs to play for that crowd acoustically—one on the guitar and the other on the piano. While filming the concert movie, Swift performed six different surprise songs, such as “I Can See You,” “Maroon,” “You Are in Love,” and “Death by a Thousand Cuts.” But it’s “Our Song,” from her debut 2006 album, that’s played on the guitar in the movie, and “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” from her most recent album, Midnights, that gets the film’s piano slot. The latter song is also the one whose lyrics inspired Swifties ( and Kelce ) to make friendship bracelets for the tour.

Rest assured: Those looking to trade bracelets at their screenings are still likely to find a beaded accessory or two. And the fan anthem “Long Live” also plays over the end credits, in all its glory.

Taylor Swift is starting off 2024 with yet another historic milestone under her belt.

Following the release of “ Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour” to United States theaters on October 13, Swift’s movie is officially the highest-grossing film in box office history among concert and documentary films with more than $261.6 million earned globally. The feat comes a week after “The Eras Tour” opened in China , with a tally of $8.7 million following its debut on December 31.

Swift’s latest accomplishment comes after a non-traditional release for “The Eras Tour.” Instead of opting for distribution from a major studio, she partnered with AMC Theatres , the world’s largest cinema chain. This allowed for Swift, as a producer on the movie, to reap about 57% of ticket sales, while theaters kept the remaining revenue and AMC took a small distribution fee. AMC didn’t exclusively screen the film, though, as it played in 3,855 theaters throughout the U.S. and Canada and 4,527 venues internationally.

“On behalf of all of us at AMC Theatres, I send my congratulations and eternal gratitude to Taylor Swift for her remarkable and record-setting box office performance with ‘ Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ‘ concert film,” says AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron. “Her spectacular performance delighted fans around the world and serves as another strong reminder about the power of extraordinary filmmaking and magic of movie theaters.”

Swift mania shows no signs of slowing down, as the pop superstar plans to resume her Eras Tour on Feb. 7 with a four-night stint at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. She’ll tour the world throughout the year, concluding the trek in Vancouver, BC in December.

Find out which songs from the tour setlist were cut

taylor swift concert movie eras tour

Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film premiered in October to an enthusiastic crowd of celebrities, fans and of course Taylor’s team, with the star of the film in attendance. As one of the first to see the film, TheWrap got the scoop on which songs from the wildly popular tour made the film, and which songs were cut.

After making speeches in multiple auditoriums for separate audiences, Swift, clad in a sky blue floral-patterned dress (probably in theme for “1989 (Taylor’s Version) with her hair pinned up like the signature bob she had when that album first came out), sat back to enjoy the film’s premiere in one of the IMAX screening rooms with her background vocalists and publicist Tree Paine.

The documentary runs 2 hours and 48 minutes, slightly shorter than Swift’s three-hour setlist and performance, which she has brought to 17 of the United States so far in addition to Mexico. The European leg will kick off in November, with Swift returning for 15 more U.S. shows in October and November of 2024. And now you can rent “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” on digital to watch at home. Read on for the 41 songs that made the cut to truly represent all 10 of Swift’s eras.

Review: The Secondhand Thrills of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Concert Movie

By Amy Phillips

Taylor Swift onstage during the Eras Tour

“I LOVE YOU, TAYLOR!!!”

It was the kind of shout you hear at concerts, emanating from a fan looking for a brief moment of acknowledgement from the artist on stage. But Taylor Swift , in her corporeal form at least, was not actually there to receive it on Friday night. The fan lobbed their love at a movie screen at a sold-out showing of Swift’s new concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, in downtown Manhattan.

Such is the nature of being a Swiftie in 2023: We feel like she’s talking directly to us through our screens, and we feel like we can talk to her right back. And we feel like she’s actually listening .

For the large swath of Swift’s vast fandom that didn’t win the Ticketmaster lottery , or wasn’t interested in remortgaging their house to pay for a seat on the secondary market , the very existence of this movie is a small miracle or a consolation prize, depending on whom you ask. (Swift has made concert films chronicling almost all of her previous tours, but none of them were widely released in theaters.) It offers a reasonable facsimile of the live experience—that is, two hours and 45 minutes of Taylor Swift immersion therapy—at the affordable price of $19.89 (lol) per ticket.

The Eras Tour is a straightforward concert doc, filmed over the course of multiple nights at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in August. It follows the setlist of the live show with a few songs from the three-and-a-half-hour runtime removed, possibly because adding another 45 minutes felt like a bit much (or there’s plans for a “Director’s Cut” in the future). “The Archer,” “Long Live,” the Haim collaboration “No Body, No Crime,” the “Seven” interlude, “Cardigan,” and “Wildest Dreams” didn’t make it into the film. Nor did two of my favorite moments from the live show: Swift’s moving words following “Marjorie” about her late grandmother, the song’s titular character , and her preamble to “Betty” about how much she loves it when men apologize .

I saw the Eras tour live twice—once in the nosebleeds after waiting five-and-a-half hours in the Ticketmaster online queue, and once close to the stage thanks to a friend who had an extra seat. They were among the best concerts I’ve ever seen: an artist at the absolute peak of her powers, surveying a 17-year ascent from country girlhood to world-conquering superstardom via jaw-dropping stage design and visual effects, boundless amounts of energy, and banger after banger after banger. The crowd’s enthusiasm was at a level that quite literally could be measured on the Richter scale . I left those stadiums in a lavender haze of warm fuzzies, my throat sore from screaming, my feet blistered from jumping, my arms festooned with friendship bracelets gifted by strangers.

Seeing The Eras Tour film in a theater was an attempt to recreate that bliss. Its release comes at a time when the yearning for Taylor Swift-induced escapism is at an all-time high. In the two months since the first leg of the tour finished, Swift has often commandeered the news cycle by, among other things, detailing the imminent 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , stepping out with a football player , getting Beyoncé to show up to her premiere , and selling a record-breaking amount of movie tickets. All of which served as excellent distractions from the dumpster fire that is life on Earth in 2023.

Outside the movie theater on Friday, Manhattan was on edge, reeling from a week of unspeakable violence in Israel and Gaza, bracing for the potential fallout from protests planned across the city. Inside, gaggles of mostly white, mostly female Swifties dressed in folklore cardigans and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” tees posed for selfies with their Eras-branded popcorn buckets. It was unlikely that any of us in that theater had ever felt threatened by close-range rocket fire. Switching my phone off after hours of obsessively monitoring the news to envelop myself in the pillowy synths of the opening “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” was a level of cognitive dissonance up there with when my college boyfriend and I inexplicably decided to watch Pootie Tang on 9/11.

But we all do what we can to cope. Over the past few years of pandemic, social unrest, climate catastrophe, and general societal collapse, there have been countless times when the brightest part of my day was spent mindlessly scrolling SwiftTok. Taylor is my Roman Empire , as the kids these days would say. But the mighty can stumble, or at least make us tired, and I can understand why. The Taylor News Cycle can be endlessly frustrating: The Matty Healy association , the private jet emissions , the allegations of performative allyship , the revisionist history . The fact that no institution— the FBI , the NFL , the Fed , Congress , Dunkin’ —is immune to her charms. That there has been so much written about her, including in this publication, with most media outlets having very little opportunity to actually talk to her at all.

And yet. I also completely understand what would compel someone to scream “I LOVE YOU, TAYLOR!” at a flickering image upon a screen.

That scream came during the standing ovation after “Cruel Summer,” the setlist’s second song. Up until that point, the vibe in the theater had been fairly subdued. But when Swift paused to survey her queendom, hamming it up in the lead-up to “The Man,” something shifted. By the time the chorus of that song kicked in, a small group of dancers had gathered in the space between the screen and the front row. The crowd steadily grew as the movie progressed; roughly half of the theater was on their feet when Red rolled around. I tried my best to stay focused on the task at hand (taking notes for this piece), but halfway through “All Too Well,” I couldn’t take it anymore: I, too, was up and dancing.

There are of course many advantages that a concert has over a movie: the allure of the unexpected (will she suffer a wardrobe malfunction or swallow a bug ?!), the privilege of breathing the same air as Taylor Swift, the luxury of not having your experience mediated by a screen. But movie magic shouldn’t be discounted, either. The cameras offer angles no spectator could ever experience from a seat, zeroing in on movements and facial expressions even the most eagle-eyed would miss. I was mesmerized by Swift’s left arm, how it never stopped moving, containing entire worlds, like a one-handed puppet show. (The right arm remained mostly static, imprisoned by its subservience to the microphone.) I was struck by moments of goofiness I had never noticed before, like the way she rolls her eyes while singing “I’ll be the princess” during “Love Story,” or how comically large and pastry-like the Speak Now dress is. The quick cuts during the showstopping Reputation segment brought the drama of “Look What You Made Me Do” and “…Ready for It?” to dizzying heights. (Yes: The Reputation era is, in fact, the best era of the Eras tour.) And the mind-boggling stage, which transforms during almost every song, proved itself worthy of its own behind-the-scenes documentary. (Seriously: How do they make those trees sprout out of the ground during “Willow”? What is Swift landing on when she swan-dives into a hole after the acoustic set?)

Is The Eras Tour a great film? If you’re a huge Taylor Swift fan, it’s a masterpiece. If you aren’t, it’s unlikely to convert you. (I attended my screening with five other Pitchfork staffers of varying ages and levels of Swift fandom. Their reactions ranged from delight and amusement to exasperation at the quick-cut editing to straight-up leaving the theater after an hour and a half.) The entire Eras phenomenon is the crown jewel of an already diamond-encrusted career, the kind of achievement one can only wonder how she could ever follow up, short of retirement or a retreat into the kind of full-bore cabin-in-the-woods singer/songwriter material hinted at by folklore and evermore . We know that the tour will continue at least through 2024 . We know that she has two more re-recorded albums to release after 1989 (Taylor’s Version) comes out in two weeks. But staring deep into those close-up blue eyes as she basked in the crowd’s adoration before “Champagne Problems,” I couldn’t stop thinking about a Swift quote from the 2020 documentary Miss Americana : “You get to the mountaintop and you look around and you’re like, ‘Oh god, what now?’”

Taylor Swift: Which Eras Tour Songs Didn’t Make Concert Film & Which Surprise Songs Got In

Every show on the Eras Tour involves an acoustic set where Swift performs at least two songs custom to that night’s show. At first, she wouldn’t allow herself repeats unless she messed up the lyrics to a song, but now, she has done away with that rule and gotten more creative by combining songs in mashups and playing up to four in a segment. The first song or three take place on guitar, and then she shifts to piano for the second half before diving beneath the stage to resume the setlist – which has since contracted and expanded to include a  Tortured Poets Department  era and set .

Below you’ll find Taylor Swift’s surprise songs that she has played most recently in Europe as well as a record of all those she has played on the entire tour so far.

Taylor Swift's 100th Eras Tour Show Is This Week — Here's What to Expect

Swift kicked off her Eras Tour in March 2023 — and still has over 50 shows to go

  • Taylor Swift's 100th Eras Tour show will be Thursday
  • The concert will be in Liverpool, England
  • Swift kicked off the Eras Tour in March 2023

Taylor Swift is about to hit triple digits!

The pop superstar will be performing three nights at Antfield Stadium in Liverpool, England, this week, including what will be her 100th Eras Tour show on June 13. Fans — and the English city — are eager to mark the monumental occasion.

Ahead of the tour stop, the Liverpool City Council created a "trail of art installations across the city," inspired by each of Swift's albums, the BBC reported . These installations include a butterfly, a moss-covered piano, a floral swing bench and a "Red" room. Claire McColgan, director of Liverpool City Council's Culture Liverpool team, told BBC that the installations represented Swift's "exceptional and seismic" impact on the industry and the city. "Even if you have not got a ticket for Taylor you can come to Liverpool and enjoy a bit of Taylor magic," McColgan told the outlet.

Fans are already speculating that the "So High School" singer might have something special up her sleeves, too — especially since the 100th show date includes her lucky number 13. For example, fans have pointed to potential hints Swift may have dropped about a music video for "But Daddy I Love Him" in the color combinations she wore during her 1989 set at her third show in Edinburgh on June 9. Swift has, of course, perviously made special announcements and revealed other surprises throughout the Eras Tour, which kicked off in March 2023. She teased many of those moments via her well-known penchant for Easter eggs.

During the Eras Tour show in Los Angeles on Aug. 9, 2023, the final show of the first U.S. leg of the Eras Tour, Swift announced that the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) re-recording would be released on October 27, 2023. Throughout her performance that night, Swift wore several blue outfits to tease the announcement.

“Here we are, on the last night of the U.S. leg of the Eras tour, in the eighth month of the year, on the ninth day," Swift teased before she shared the photo of the new cover art for 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and release date.

The “Anti-Hero” singer also announced Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) ’s release date while on the Eras Tour on May 5, 202, teasing during a Nashville show that she had “been planning something for a while."

John Shearer/TAS23/Getty

"You know how I love to plan things, and how I love to surprise you with the things I plan. It's my love language with you,” Swift told the crowd ahead of the official announcement. “I plot, I scheme, I plan and I get to tell you about it.”

On the day of the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) announcement at the Eras Tour show at Kansas City on July 7, 2023, Swift surprised fans once again and premiered the music video for " I Can See You, " a vault track from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , for the first time. Swift even invited her ex Taylor Lautner and Joey King , who starred in the music video, onstage to celebrate the premiere, as well.

Earlier in the tour, Swift surprised concertgoers at MetLife Stadium on May 26, 2023 and premiered the "Karma" music video from her 2022 album Midnights . The music video featured the remixed version of the song that featured Ice Spice in the track and video.

Swift will be performing three nights at the Antfield Stadium in Liverpool, starting on June 13 through June 15. Only time will tell how Swift will mark the big 100th occasion.

Thousands of Taylor Swift concertgoers in Madrid have come down with COVID-19 after Eras Tour

"covid, infected by taylor swift, i'll sell my antigen test for 5000 euros," one swiftie said, by nardos haile.

Some Swifties in Europe have more than Taylor Swift in common — they have COVID-19 too.

During the singer's European  Eras Tour  stops, Swift performed in Madrid on   May 29 and 30. According to Spanish news site El Nacional , not long after the concert that amassed about 130,000 attendees over two days, thousands online have said they contracted COVID-19. Such gatherings are widely known for being possible  superspreader events , as people from many different areas – sometimes even flying in from different countries – are in such close proximity.

One specific X account, known for being a hub for Spanish Swifties, took a poll of their followers, asking if they had become sick with COVID-19 after one of Swift's concerts in Madrid. Of the 10,796 people who answered the poll online, 35%, or 3,780 of the concertgoers said they had.

One concertgoer described their symptoms as, "Cough, sore throat, body discomfort and I can hardly speak." Another said that a few days after both concerts, "On Saturday my neck hurt, and I spent the night from Sunday to Monday with a fever of 39C, one of the worst nights of my life." Another person said, "During the weekend, I noticed that I felt different because I was feeling very uncomfortable, and felt dizzy. Yesterday I was coughing non-stop. I took the test today and it came back positive."

It's not just some of the largest European cities facing superspreader events in the coming summer. In the United States, scientists are warning of what they have been calling a "summer wave"  of COVID-19 cases. The potential rise in COVID-19 cases stems from new Omicron subvariants like the KP.3 variant, JN.1 virus , or other strains known as the Flirt strains. The Centers for Disease Control said that these new strains of COVID now account for more than 50% of the cases in the U.S. According to the CDC , infection rates and hospitalization have been lower or "minimal" levels of "respiratory illness activity." However, the government agency's data suggests that infections are projected to increase in several states across the country like California, Washington D.C., Florida, New Jersey and Texas.

We need your help to stay independent

Despite the growing concerns about new variants causing an increase in infections, there has been an unexpected outcome to thousands of Swifties testing positive. Some have shared how the COVID experience and symptoms have been difficult to deal with but others have treated it as just another Taylor Swift Eras Tour bonus. "COVID, infected by Taylor Swift, I'll sell my antigen test for 5000 euros!" one person wrote, as if the test was a Swiftie keepsake. Another said, "Taylor Swift is so cute – she included the new COVID variant as a surprise in the Eras Tour Madrid."

Even though some Swifties may wear their positive COVID tests as a badge of honor, Spanish Swifties aren't the only ones who have contracted COVID at the Eras Tour. The Nacional also reported that some French Swifties are experiencing similar symptoms to COVID-19 after the singer's two-day stint in Paris on June 9 and 10. There were also some concerns that some concertgoers contracted COVID-19 last year during the U.S. leg of the tour. However, the Los Angeles Times said it wasn't clear if those cases contributed to a larger spread of the virus.
