Six Ohio private colleges arrange 'road trip' for prospective students: Higher Education

  • Updated: Jul. 24, 2012, 10:15 a.m. |
  • Published: Jul. 24, 2012, 9:15 a.m.
  • Karen Farkas, cleveland.com

Prospective students and their parents can visit six private liberal arts colleges in Ohio over three days, in what the schools call the ultimate road trip.

The Ohio Six College Tour is organized by Oberlin College , Denison University , Kenyon College , Wittenberg University , Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Wooster . Each will offer tours and programs at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Aug. 1, 2, and 3. The colleges are close enough that students could arrange to see all six schools during that time.

Lindsey Duerr, associate director of admissions at the College of Wooster, said the colleges developed the tours because the participating schools usually attract many of the same students seeking an excellent private college. This is the fourth year for student tours.

"I think it takes the stress out of planning for parents and students," she said.

Students can register online at ohiosixcollegetours.com and choose the schools they would like to visit.

Duerr said about 400 students visited Wooster during the last three-day program.

"They come from all over, and we even had international students pop in," she said.

About 50 guidance counselors from across the country attend a similar three-day tour of the colleges in April. They stay in Columbus and visit two schools a day.

Clock fixed at Cleveland State: The 104-foot tall clock tower at Cleveland State University's Main Classroom building is finally providing the correct time. The clock, which faces a grass plaza, had rarely been on time for at least a year after wind damaged the gears, which then couldn't move the heavy clock hands correctly to keep time.

This summer the clock was repaired, at a cost of about $40,000. The gears were upgraded and the face was cleaned, caulked and covered with the CSU logo. The hands and dial markers were also replaced.

Kent State surpasses fundraising goal: Kent State University raised $265 million in its Centennial Campaign, surpassing its goal by $15 million.

The money will fund the university's endowment, capital projects, operating needs and student scholarships. Donors committed to supporting nearly 290 endowed scholarship funds.

Gifts include $13.5 million in software for the College of Applied Engineering, Sustainability and Technology, $6.5 million for the Roe Green Center for the Arts, $6 million for the Robert S. Morrison Health and Science Center at Kent State University at Ashtabula and $3 million to the new School of Digital Sciences.

CWRU professor heads to Washington: Susan Helper, a professor of economics at Case Western Reserve University , will serve for a year on the staff of the Council of Economic Advisers in Washington D.C.

The federal office is charged with advising the president on economic policy and has about 10 senior economists, according to a CWRU news release.

A member of the Weatherhead School of Management faculty since 1990, Helper will focus on manufacturing policy while at the agency.

She recently co-authored Brookings Institution papers about the importance of manufacturing to the nation's economy.

Can someone tell me about the Ohio Six College Tour?

I got a message from them. I just want information about them, because this is the first time I’ve ever heard about them.

@Desperate-Potato Check their website - If I remember correctly, it’s a coordinated effort by Ohio-based LACs to have special visit days scheduled back to back so parents can efficiently visit a few in one weekend. This is especially useful if one is traveling any distance to tour schools.

Many colleges have come together to form groups with other schools. The Ohio six is just one example. There is nothing particularly special that they offer as a group.

What I was curious about was the student selection. Do they just pick random students? I read on their site about rising juniors and seniors.

Suggested College Tour Itineraries

college tours map

Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities.  We also suggest others worth considering and why.

Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Click on the Continue Reading link below to see our suggestions, or try our College Tour Planner to build your own custom campus tour itinerary.

Suggested starting point

  • Boston College
  • Northeastern
  • Boston University

These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity.  All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.

For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst .  If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .

Boston campus visits itinerary

  • Sarah Lawrence

Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game.  If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.

New York campus visits itinerary

  • Syracuse University
  • Ithaca College
  • Hobart and William Smith

The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .

Syracuse campus visits itinerary

Washington DC

  • American University
  • George Washington
  • Johns Hopkins
  • University of Richmond
  • University of Virginia

The schools on this list are medium to large schools in suburban and urban settings. Time permitting, consider also checking out William & Mary , Virginia Tech and Washington and Lee .

Washington DC campus visits itinerary

  • University of Chicago
  • Northwestern
  • University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
  • University of Wisconsin

These schools are all classic medium-large universities. For a smaller school experience, check out the Colleges that Change Lives in the area, such as Knox , Beloit , Wheaton , Wabash , Kalamazoo and Cornell College .

Chicago campus visits itinerary

  • Case Western
  • Carnegie Mellon
  • University of Michigan

These schools provide a broad mix of sizes and settings. Kenyon and Oberlin exude a small school, small town feel, Ohio state and Michigan a classic Big Ten college town feel, and Case Western and Carnegie Mellon a more urban feel.

Cleveland campus visits itinerary

San Francisco

  • UC Berkeley
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • University of San Francisco
  • Santa Clara University

Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.

San Francisco campus visits itinerary

Los Angeles

  • Claremont Colleges
  • UC San Diego

These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day.  The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.

If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

Baseball  Championship: Future dates

MCWS HISTORY:  Winningest coaches  |  Most titles  |  Most appearances   |  Conferences most represented

Here is more on how the tournament works:

What is the difference between the Division I baseball tournament and the College World Series?

The NCAA Division I baseball tournament is a 64-team tournament that starts in May. After two rounds of play (which each consist of multiple games), there are just eight teams left. These eight teams then head to Omaha, Neb. for the College World Series. The CWS is the culmination of the DI tournament, where the teams compete in two brackets, with the winners of each meeting in the CWS finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.

When did the College World Series start?

The first-ever NCAA Division I baseball tournament was in 1947, and would barely be recognized as the same tournament nowadays. The 1947 tournament featured just eight teams, which were divided into two four-team, single-elimination brackets. The two winners — California and Yale — then met in a best-of-three final in Kalamazoo, Michigan. California would go undefeated through the inaugural CWS and beat Yale to capture the first title.

How are teams selected for the NCAA Division I baseball tournament?

Since 1954, the NCAA Division I baseball tournament field has been split into two qualifying groups: The automatic berths, and the at-large selections. Since 2014, that in a typical year split sees 31 conference champions receive automatic berths, and 33 teams receive at-large bids, decided by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

Men's College World Series champs since 1947

California defeated Yale in the first-ever Men's College World Series, the first of two played in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Texas put itself on the map as the first back-to-back champions in winning the only MCWS ever played in Wichita, Kansas in 1949. The following season Texas won its second championship, opening Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

Here's a complete list of all the College World Series finals in the 73-year history of the event. Ole Miss won the 2022 Men's College World Series in two games over Oklahoma.

Six Ohio State health sciences colleges honored for diversity efforts

The university is the only academic institution in the country to have six graduate programs honored.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the nation’s oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, has recognized six health sciences colleges at The Ohio State University with the 2023 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

The  College of Medicine ,  College of Nursing ,  College of Optometry ,  College of Pharmacy , College of Public Health  and  College of Veterinary Medicine  were honored for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ohio State is the only academic institution in the country to have six graduate programs receive the Health Professions HEED award.

“It is an honor that six of Ohio State’s health sciences colleges have been recognized with a HEED Award,” said Wendy Smooth, senior vice provost for inclusive excellence. “I am proud that these colleges’ efforts to foster welcoming and inclusive environments for faculty, staff and students are being lauded. The university benefits when everyone has a sense that they can fully participate in the life of our campuses.”

The Health Professions HEED Award is the only national honor recognizing institutions of higher education for their outstanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The selection process includes a comprehensive and rigorous application exploring student and employee recruitment and retention best practices and leadership support of diversity and inclusion efforts.

Ohio State will be featured in the November/December 2023 issue of  INSIGHT Into Diversity  magazine.
