Chrysler 3.6L (219 cu in) firing order — diagram & guide

Achieving optimal performance through the chrysler 3.6l firing order..

A man is working on a car engine with a logo on it.

It’s no secret that Chrysler engines have been used by all sorts of different car brands like Jeep or Dodge, but few engines can compare with the 3.6-liter in that sense. It’s one of Chrysler Group’s most widely used engines and it’s no wonder considering the engine’s dependability.

However, you can’t go around some basic maintenance even when you have an engine as reliable as this one. So, we’ve decided to give you a tour of the Chrysler 3.6L (219 cu in) firing order just to make sure you’ll use the correct firing pattern. We’ll also delve into the cylinder layout of the engine to provide you with some initial steps, so let’s get into it.

Chrysler 3.6L firing order

First things first, the Chrysler 3.6L firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 which is the simplest possible firing sequence. Because of that, it’s easy to remember and you’ll have an easy time using it in all of Chrysler Group’s models.

The real source of confusion comes from the different versions of this engine since there was an original 3.6-liter V6 that was later succeeded by the Pentastar version. While this affected the engine’s fuel efficiency and the power output for the better, the firing order was still 1-2-3-4-5-6 even after the upgrade.

So, regardless of the version that your vehicle uses, the firing order is always the same for these engines.

Chrysler 3.6L cylinder diagram

The dashboard of a white tesla car with four blue buttons.

The next key thing we need to discuss regarding this engine and its firing order is the cylinder configuration. To apply the firing order, you’ll need to know where each cylinder is located and the best way to start is with the first cylinder.

You’ll find it on the passenger’s side of the engine as the closest one to the engine’s front end and the crank pulley from that side. The passenger’s side bank also houses cylinders 3 and 5, while the driver’s side cylinders are 2, 4, and 6.

The cylinders are numbered front to rear in their respective cylinder banks, so we hope this will clear up a few things that you need to know before using the firing order.

Chrysler 3.6L vehicle applications

Talking about the Chrysler 3.6-liter vehicle applications isn’t easy since the engine wasn’t only used in Chrysler vehicles. To ensure you’ll use the correct firing order for your car, we’ve decided to put together a list of all the vehicle models powered by this engine:

  • Chrysler 200LX
  • Chrysler Town & Country
  • Chrysler 300
  • Chrysler Voyager
  • Chrysler Pacifica

Along with Chrysler models, this engine has also been used in the Dodge Journey , Dodge Durango , Grand Caravan, and a few Jeep cars like the Gladiator and Wrangler Unlimited JL.

All in all, the Chrysler 3.6-liter firing order shouldn’t be an issue for you since it’s easy to remember and works for a wide variety of cars fitted with this engine. Our team worked tirelessly to provide you with all the significant facts in this guide, you can now go ahead and check the cylinders of your engine one piece at a time.

In-depth Look at the Pentastar 3.6L Engine

The Pentastar 3.6 engine is one of the most popular engines that is used in a wide range of Dodge and Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. This engine first debuted in 2011 and is still the go-to engine for Dodge and Chrysler vehicles.

What makes this engine unique and special is the fact that it is an all-aluminum, 24-valve, dual overhead camshaft engine. which is designed for both reliability and power (305 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque).

The Pentastar 3.6 is a V-6 engine that can be found in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, depending on your model.

Why Is the Correct Firing Order Crucial for Your Dodge 3.6 Engine?

Now that I have explained what the correct firing order is, it’s time to dive into why it is so important for your Dodge 3.6 engine.

If you have ever heard of a “backfire” in an internal combustion engine, this is when one of the fuel-air mixtures ignites before the spark plug fires.

This can happen when there is a misfire and can cause serious damage to your vehicle.

An incorrect firing order can cause engine backfires, misfires, rough idling, loss of power when accelerating, and extreme engine vibrations.

To summarize, the firing order plays a crucial role in the engine’s performance.

It ensures that the engine runs smoothly and efficiently by ensuring that the right amount of fuel and air is delivered to the right cylinder at the right time.

A misfiring spark plug or a problem with the firing order can lead to poor engine performance and decreased fuel efficiency.

This table associates the position of each cylinder with its respective moment in the firing sequence

Practical Tips

To verify the firing order of your Pentastar 3.6 engine, begin by locating the ignition coils and spark plugs on the engine.

You can easily follow the wiring from the coils to the corresponding plugs, ensuring they match the 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence.

Preventive Maintenance

Regular engine checks can prevent firing order mishaps. Always inspect spark plug wires for wear and tear, and replace ignition components according to the service intervals specified in your owner’s manual.

Troubleshooting If you experience rough idling or misfires, check the firing order as part of your diagnostic process.

An engine code reader can help indicate which cylinder is misfiring, guiding you to the potential issue.

Knowing the correct firing order for your Dodge 3.6 engine is essential for maintaining its performance and preventing damage. By following the guidelines provided, you can ensure that your engine remains a reliable source of power for your vehicle.

I have had replace almost everything on this Dodge Ram 1500 3.6, I replaced PCV valve, oil and coolant housing, all six spark plugs and coils, I take it into AutoZone last week and put it on a machine they told me number 5 spark plug is misfiring I replace that last week and this week something happens again and now they gave me a print out and it say’s 5 is misfiring every week it is something different, I am so sick and tired of this truck already.

So tell me why is your firing order confusing? why is there an 8 on your firing order when there is 6 spark plugs.

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful.

Hey Arminda, Thanks for pointing this out. Just to clarify for everyone, the 8 on the diagram is supposed to be a 6 as stated in the other parts of the article. I must have missed my morning coffee lol.

just skimming I can see a couple things wrong:

– the 2.7L is 167 in^3 – it had an aluminum block with steel sleeves

I didn’t read beyond that to check what else but you might want to double check.

You are right, my mistake, fixed

Engine oil capacity shows a 5.7L engine not a 2.7L engine.

It’s 5.7 litres of oil, not engine capacity I think.

Still what is EER? No explanation in all that info, great work on details

EER is just the engine code. Most car manufacturers assign an engine code to help identify the engine easily when looking for parts/upgrades/information.

2008 Magnum 2.7L 6cyl Can ( or should you ) install a turbocharger on this motor?

My car used to have the 2.7 lt 6 cil dohc WITH egr valve and pipes… and some other sensor on the top… I had to change it and get an almost identical engine WITHOUT the egr valve and pipes…

Computer correctly states some sensors are DISCONNECTED… Nevertheless the “new” engine runs fine. Still, I need to know exactly what is the model/code of this engine?

I can no longer search accurately for spare parts without this important data.

I have a 2010 non us dodge journey In Australia the local parts shops say it takes 5.2L of oil but I changed the oil and filter put in 5L and it came up the dipstick by a lot had to drain almost 2L back out to get it to the level of full on the dipstick

How can I find out if the owner before put a different dipstick in or why the difference is oil needed is so different

Thinking to put a CAT 1 hurricane in an SE Magnum. I’m wondering how it might work RE: Dimensions, Weight, Mounting, etc…

Anybody have any ideas on this?

Dodge 3.6L Firing Order Explained (With Example)

dodge 3.6l firing order

Over the years, the 3.6L engine has become extremely popular among many drivers who like to have solid horsepower and incredible torque. This article will provide a detailed breakdown of the Dodge 3.6L firing order.

What Is the Firing Order of the Dodge 3.6L Engine?

The firing order of the Dodge 3.6L engine is 1-2-3-4-5-6. The passenger’s side front to back comes with sequence 2-4-6, while the driver’s side front to back sequence is 1-3-5. The sequence on the coil pack from the passenger’s side to the driver’s side is 5-2-3-6-4-1.

You can determine the firing order of your Dodge 3.6L by looking up the manufacturer’s documentation for your specific model. Most of the time, how the spark plugs are labeled is usually the correct order for ignition.

However, the firing order may be indicated by color codes on the distributor cap in some vehicles . These colors indicate a specific cylinder on the engine.

For instance, red indicates the first cylinder, blue means the second one, and yellow indicates the third cylinder.

Manufacturers can also use numbers to indicate cylinders. For example, 1 marks the first cylinder, 2 shows the second cylinder, 3 indicates the third cylinder, etc.

But, once you purchase a vehicle, manufacturers will indicate the firing order on the owner’s manual. Therefore, you can simply follow the instructions listed to know the firing order of your Dodge 3.6L engine. Later on, you’ll need this information when you decide to rebuild your engine.

What Do You Mean By Firing Order?

An engine’s firing order is the sequence of power distribution in every cylinder in a multi-cylinder reciprocating engine. For a diesel engine , the firing order corresponds to the sequence of fuel injection, while on a petrol/gasoline engine , the firing order corresponds to the sequence in which the spark plugs spark.

When car manufacturers design engines, they have to choose an appropriate firing order to reduce vibration, guarantee smooth running and enhance user comfort. When it comes to radial engines, firing order follows a specific pattern since the firing impulses have to follow the cranks’ motion.

Even though the firing order of an inline engine varies a lot, it is designed to ensure the cylinders and the crankshaft fire in an evenly distributed manner. Generally, firing order affects the symmetry of your vehicle’s engine’s power output, sound, and vibration.

This explains why cylinders don’t fire in a 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence, as it can easily deform or even break the crankshaft. All cylinders need shuffling so that they create balance in the engine. As a result, no specific practice is used for numbering cylinders in V-type engines.

The following are the most common firing orders:

  • Two-cylinder engines: These engine cylinders can either fire simultaneously or one after the other.
  • Straight-3 engines: The firing order is usually 1-2-3 or 1-3-2. There isn’t a significant difference between the two.
  • Straight-4 engines: These engines usually use a 1-3-4-2 firing order. But there are also some engines that use a 1-2-4-3 firing order.
  • Straight-5 engines: These engines use a 1-2-4-5-3 firing order which is meant to reduce vibration from the rocking couple.
  • Straight-6 engines: They usually use a 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order meant to create a perfect primary and secondary balance.
  • V6 engines: The engines with a 90º angle between the cylinders usually use a firing order of R1-L2-R2-L3-L1-R3.They can also use R1-L3-R3-L2-R2-L1. On the other hand, V6 engines with a 60º angle between the cylinders usually use a firing order of R1-L1-R2-L2-R3-L3.
  • Flat-6 engines: These engines use a firing order of R1-L3-R2-L1-R3-L2 or R1-L2-R3-L1-R2-L3.
  • V8 engines: They use different firing orders.
  • V10 engines: These engines use a firing order of R1-L1-R5-L5-R2-L2-R3-L3-R4-L4 or R1-L5-R5-L2-R2-L3-R3-L4-R4-L1.
  • V12 engines use a variety of firing orders.

Generally, as the number of cylinders in an engine increases, so do the possible firing order combinations.

How Do I Know If the Firing Order Is Properly Placed in a Dodge 3.6L Engine?

When the firing order of the Dodge 3.6L is appropriately placed, the engine will run smoothly without any problems. Additionally, the proper firing order will ensure there is even fuel distribution throughout the engine. This results in a good fuel economy.

The following are common signs that the firing order in your Dodge 3.6L engine isn’t placed properly:

  • Rattling and pinging sound coming from the engine
  • Hard starting engine
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Visible damage to the catalytic converter

Here are the steps to follow to correct the firing order or your Dodge 3.6L engine:

  • Buy a repair manual for your specific Dodge make and mode. You can find these manuals online or at the nearby auto parts store. In this manual, you’ll find a diagram of the spark plug wires and firing order.
  • Locate the distributor rotor and determine which way it turns. You can do this by removing the distributor cap, which is located at the top or front of the engine.
  • Refer to the repair manual to locate the number one cylinder on the 3.6L engine. Most of the time, this cylinder is indicated using a mark.
  • Connect the spark plugs one at a time based on whether your distributor rotor runs clockwise or anticlockwise. This should take approximately two minutes if you have the right repair manual.
  • Compare the spark plugs on the engine with the manual’s firing order. Ensure that every wire is connected to the proper distributor terminal.

What If the Firing Order Is Not Sequenced Properly in Your Dodge 3.6L Engine?

The firing order of your engine’s cylinders usually determines its performance. If the firing order is not appropriately sequenced in your Dodge 3.6L engine, it’s likely that it won’t run as smoothly as you’d have hoped. Sometimes, wrongly placed spark plugs will cause engine misfires. The unburned fuel will then drip down to the exhaust and damage the oxygen sensors after a while.

If more than two spark plugs are placed incorrectly, your vehicle may not start at all, and if it does, it will run roughly due to the improper alignment of air and fuel combustion. If you drive the vehicle and the firing is not sequenced correctly, you risk damaging expensive valves. Therefore, it may be best to fix your engine’s firing order before driving.

Importance of Firing Order

A properly sequenced firing order comes with several benefits, including:

  • It minimizes engine vibration
  • It enhances engine balancing
  • It contributes to an even flow of power
  • It increases engine cooling
  • It leads to a decreased back pressure

Factors That Influence the Firing Order of the Dodge 3.6L Engine

There are several factors that influence the resulting firing order of your Dodge 3.6L engine. They include:

  • The molecular structure of the fuel
  • Spark timing
  • The air-fuel ratio
  • The temperature of self-ignition
  • The temperature of the combustion wall chamber
  • Spark intensity and duration
  • The effect of high temperature and resulting pressure after compression
  • The rate of burning

Does Firing Order Affect the Sound of the Engine?

Firing order doesn’t necessarily affect the sound your engine makes. However, it affects the sound made by the mechanical anger.

Dodge Journey P0305: Misfire Detected (Cylinder 5)

P0305 is a fairly common trouble code with the Dodge Journey . It’s and OBD2 code and stands for:

Dodge Journey P0305 Diagnosis

P0305 is certainly a cause for concern, and should be considered a threat to the drivability your Journey. The nice thing about P0305 is that it’s a cylinder specific trouble code, which makes diagnosing the problems simpler than P0300 , which means that the cylinders are randomly misfiring.

It will often be accompanied by codes P0301, P0302 , P0303 , P0304 etc…. These particular codes indicate that there is a misfire in cylinder’s one, two, and three respectively.

P0305 Dodge Journey

Fixing P0305 should be considered a high priority. Unlike a lot of the OBDII codes, this code has to do directly with engine combustion. It also can cost money to ignore it, since driving with a misfire can damage the vehicle’s catalytic converter. The engine is also not firing all of the fuel, so raw fuel is also passing through Cylinder 5 into the exhaust. Mileage may suffer as well when your Journey has P0305 as well.

Dodge Journey P0305 Definition

P0305 is a cylinder specific misfire code, which means that Cylinder 5 is misfiring and causing it. An important thing to understand when finding the location of Cylinder 5 is that it’s going to be the fifth cylinder in the firing order. It won’t be the fifth cylinder that you might see when looking at the engine.

Journey P0305 OBDII Code Symptoms

  • The P0305 trouble code will trigger the Journey’s service engine soon light.
  • The vehicle itself may begin to run rough. It depends on how serious the misfire is.
  • The vehicle may produce excess vibration, especially at lower RPM.
  • Fuel mileage may suffer.
  • You may smell raw gas coming from the tailpipe.
  • The vehicle may backfire.

Dodge Journey P0305 OBDII Code Diagnsois

P0305 Trouble Code Diagnosis- Dodge Journey

There are quite a few things that can cause the P0305 trouble code to trigger the Dodge Journey. Here are the most common problems that may cause it. They are presented somewhat in order from most to least likely to be causing the code:

  • Bad Spark Plugs – Spark plugs are one of the most common causes of P0305. Take a look at the electrodes and see if they are in good shape. Most vehicles now come with iridium plugs that need changed very infrequently. That being said, the plugs are a great place to start. Here’s a great video on how to see if a spark plug is bad.
  • Spark Plug Wires – On most modern engines, the plug wires are not nearly as long as they once were, but they can still go bad. Here’s how to tell if your plug wires are bad (video).
  • Coil Packs – Coil packs rarely go bad, but when they do, they can certainly cause P0305 in your Dodge Journey. Replacing a set can be very expensive. Here’s how to test them .
  • Bad Fuel Injector – If you have a fuel injector that has gone bad, it won’t be able to properly atomize the fuel and you’ll get the P0305. Here’s a good video on how to diagnose an injector , it can be a little tricky. This is definitely not the place to start.
  • Vacuum leak – If your Journey has a vacuum leak, it can be very difficult for it to get the right air/fuel mixture. This will cause the cylinders to misfire and it’ll throw the P0305 if the leak is around that specific cylinder on the intake manifold. It’s easy (and kind of fun) to chase one down. Popular Mechanics : How to find a vacuum leak .
  • Cam or Crank Sensors – This one is very unlikely, but it does happen. If the ECU is not getting the right signal from these sensors, the vehicles timing is not going to sync up and it’ll misfire.
  • Low Compression – If you have a leaking head gasket, bent valve, cracked head, etc.. that would cause compression to not be as high as it should, you’re going to get P0305. You should also feel the vehicle is down on power as well.

Most Common P0305 Fixes

If you follow the items listed above you should be able to fix the P0305. Here’s how to go about it:

Inspect and test the parts of the ignition system around the cylinder to determine whether or not you need to replace the coil packs, plugs, or wires. Most of the time one of those three things will end up being the problem.

You need to reset the trouble codes and swap the coil pack, wire, and plug from Cylinder 5 to another cylinder. If you get a different P030X code, you’ll know that one of those three components is bad, since by moving those components you have changed which cylinder the trouble code has registered in. After that, Go ahead and replace them or have them tested. It’s an easy, and cheap method of determining if your ignition components have gone bad.

After that you would want to test the fuel injection system. There are links above that’ll show you how to do that. If that doesn’t work, it may be time to do a compression test and see if you have a leak in that cylinder.

Is P0305 a Serious Concern?

P0305 is cause for concern and left unfixed can leave you stranded or make the vehicle virtually un-drivable. Fixing the problem causing the code to fire can save you time and money and keep your Dodge Journey from breaking down. Quick action may also save your catalytic converter from going bad. Good luck diagnosing the issue. If there is anything that you would like to add please leave a comment below.
