Nairobi National Park safari | Travel guide

Nairobi National Park is a national park in Kenya that was established in 1946 about 7 km south of Nairobi. It is fenced on three sides, whereas the open southern boundary allows migrating wildlife to move between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains.

The park is sometimes called Kifaru Ark, which means “Rhinoceros Sanctuary”. It is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries, and it is one of only a few parks where visitors can be certain of seeing a black rhinoceros in its natural habitat.

Herbivores are also known to gather in the park during the dry season and the park itself brings a unique charm that sets it apart from other parks in Kenya with the proximity alone outside the capital city making it an easy addition to most visitors travel plans.

Why visit Nairobi National Park?

Nairobi national park safari.

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and as Kenya’s first national park, Nairobi National Park has been a wild haven for the capital city since 1946. At 45 square miles, the park is small compared to most national parks.

Size aside however, Nairobi National Park’s landscape hosts thousands of wild animals at home in various ecosystems. Primarily the park consists of open grasslands dotted with scrub and upland forests, making it an ideal habitat for many of Kenya’s native species.

But given the relatively restrictive size of the park, its carrying capacity for predators is limited. Most are shocked to learn that Nairobi National Park is home to a nearly complete set of Kenyan species.

Only leaving the most formidable creature, elephants, out of the landscape. Simply put the park is too small for their massive appetites, plus elephants would destroy the three-sided fence perimeter.

Nairobi NP is known for healthy populations of cape buffalo, Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impala, ostrich, and hippo. And where there is prey, there are often predators! Within Nairobi National Park’s boundaries live prides of lion, spotted hyena, jackal, and even elusive leopard and cheetah.

Visitors will also find numerous lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, over 400 bird species, and many large herbivores. But the main highlight of Nairobi National Park is its resident rhinos.

In fact, the park hosts one of the highest densities of black rhino in Kenya. Many view the park as the best location to observe this critically endangered species in the entire country, if not the world.

Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 111 black rhinos and 24 white rhinos. These population numbers are a true success considering the park was void of rhinos until their introduction back in 1996.

With over 500 bird species recorded, Nairobi NP probably gives Kenya’s capital the longest bird list of all cities in the world. The park’s substantial area of undisturbed grassland is of great importance for species such as the restricted-range Jackson’s widowbird, which breeds here regularly after good rains.

Other grassland birds include ostriches, secretary birds and bustards. Nairobi NP is a popular birding destination and it’s easy to book a full or half day guided birding trip at short notice.

The park’s predominant environment is open grass plain with scattered Acacia bushes. The western uplands of the park have highland dry forest with stands of Olea africana, Croton dichogamus, Brachylaena hutchinsii, and Calodendrum.

The lower slopes of these areas are grassland. Themeda, cypress, Digitaria, and Cynodon species are found in these grassland areas.

Other activities at Nairobi National Park

Here are some other activities which visitors can consider during their African safari experience in Nairobi National Park:

  • Nairobi Safari Walk: Explore wildlife on foot, an authentic and economical means of exploring wildlife in Nairobi National Park and the bomas of Kenya. Nairobi safari walk charges range from KSH 125 (USD $1.1) for a child to KSH 215 (USD $1.86) for an adult.
  • Photography safari tours: Visitors on a photo safari CAN share a luxury photography tour with like-minded individuals and capture their favourite moments.
  • Sightseeing tours: This is best to see the hippo pools, giraffe center, day tours or early morning game drives in private vehicles. Guests can tour Nairobi National Park and visit the animal orphanage as well. The park also contains a historic ivory burning site.

Visitors often enjoy combining their safari adventure with some quiet downtime on Kenya’s best beaches , a perfect end to their African adventure.

This urban wilderness is also designated as a prime rhino sanctuary. Best time to visit Nairobi National Park Kenya

Choosing the Best Season for a Visit to Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park, a one-of-a-kind nature retreat just outside Kenya's busy city, provides a spectacular animal experience that is easily accessible to both residents and visitors. The optimum time to visit Nairobi National Park is determined by your animal watching choices, weather conditions, and overall experience. Let's have a look at the different seasons and their highlights to help you decide when to schedule your trip.

(July to October)

The dry season in Nairobi National Park, extending from July to October, is considered the prime time for wildlife viewing. During this period, vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot animals as they gather around water sources. The pleasant weather and clear skies create optimal conditions for game drives and photography. July and August are particularly popular months, as the animals are more active, and the risk of rain is minimal.

Short Rains

(November to December)

The short rainy season occurs from November to December. While this period sees occasional rain showers, it is still a viable time to visit. The landscapes are lush and vibrant, and the park is less crowded than during the peak dry season. Wildlife is still plentiful, and the brief rain showers add a unique dimension to the experience.

(March to May)

The long rainy season, spanning from March to May, brings heavier and more consistent rainfall. During this time, the park can become muddy and some roads may be impassable. While wildlife viewing might be more challenging due to the denser vegetation, the park transforms into a green paradise and birdlife flourishes. This season is ideal for those who appreciate the beauty of a lush landscape and a quieter park atmosphere.

Transition Seasons

(January to February, June)

The transition periods between the rainy and dry seasons can also offer rewarding visits. January and February typically mark the end of the short rainy season, while June signifies the start of the dry season. These months offer a blend of pleasant weather, reduced crowds, and a variety of wildlife to observe.

Wildlife Considerations

Keep in mind that wildlife viewing is possible year-round in Nairobi National Park, as the animals are present regardless of the season. During the dry season, animals tend to congregate around water sources, enhancing the chances of sightings. However, birdwatching enthusiasts might find the wetter seasons more appealing due to increased avian activity.

Safari in the City – Exploring the Nairobi National Park

' src=

The Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife park located within a metropolitan city. If you really think about it, that’s pretty wild – no pun intended! Right in the heart of the city of Nairobi is a 117 sq. km wildlife park, the home to some 100 mammal and 400 migratory and endemic bird species.

Due to its proximity, it is no wonder that this park is widely visited by local and foreign safari lovers alike. Being a safari lover myself, I’ve been wanting to go for a while and I finally got the opportunity to do so over the past weekend.

Nairobi National Park Rhinos

Mark and I decided to combine two things we loved on this visit – safaris and picnics. Luckily, the Nairobi National Park offers both. We packed a good picnic brunch and set out early in the morning to explore the park and increase our chances for a good game drive.

What's Covered in this Post

Nairobi National Park Safari

We arrived at the Nairobi National Park’s Main Gate after a 20-minute drive from our home and purchased our 24-hour entry ticket at the gate.

Animals in Nairobi National Park

As with most parks in Kenya, we sighted some of the smaller animals as soon as we drove through the gates. There were several gazelles and zebras in the park. I was ecstatic to be able to see giraffes up close and zebras against the backdrop of the city.

Nairobi National Park Zebra

Animals in Nairobi National Park

Having visited several other parks in Kenya, including the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Park , I tried to keep my expectations low during this safari. However, deep down, I was hoping that we found all the big game during our drive.

The Nairobi National Park is home to animals including lions, rhinos, buffalos, leopards and cheetahs, among others. The only member of the big five that cannot be found here is the elephant.

Nairobi National Park

After driving a few hours without any major sightings of members of the Big 5, we happened upon a group of safari vehicles racing towards what we assumed was a great sighting and followed them.

Our pursuit paid off with the sighting of a family of rhinoceroses. By the way, in writing this article, I got to learn that a group of rhinos is called ‘ A Crash’! Did you know that? Male rhinos are called ‘bulls’, females are called ‘cows’ and their babies are calves.

Rhino Family

Shortly after the rhino sighting, the safari cars were off again and we followed them to a viewing of three lions ‘hiding’ in the bushes. So far, we had now seen 3 members of the big four animals in Nairobi National Park – i.e. the lion, water buffalo and rhino. I was content with our outing and we decided to call it a day.

Nairobi National Park Lion

Nairobi National Park Picnic

We planned to have a picnic in one of the picnic sites in the park but ended up not doing so. We drove to one of the picnic sites (I don’t remember the name) but it looked quite run down. I was also quite sceptical to step out of the car, without a guide, ranger or other safari cars nearby.

We wound up having our packed brunch inside the car but perhaps the next time we return, we’ll find a more suitable place within the park to have a picnic.

Nairobi National Park Picnic

Overall, I really enjoyed our city game drive. The highlight of the day was the sightings of the crash of rhinos. The little one was incredibly cute! Finding lions in the park was also exciting for me. We planned on checking out the Safari Walk and the Animal Orphanage after our game drive but we were both quite tired by the end of it, we decided to leave those for another visit.

Nairobi National Park Safari

Generally, I would recommend a visit to this park for locals and residents as the entrance fees are quite affordable. For visitors, if you have no plans of heading to the other National Parks in the country, this might be an option to consider.

If we didn’t see the lions and rhinos during our safari, I would have been inclined to recommend a visit to Naivasha instead. However, parks and sanctuaries in Naivasha do not have predators and you have a better chance of seeing them in Nairobi National Park.

Road side Giraffes Naivasha

If you do plan to visit, here are some details to help you plan your travels…

Nairobi National Park Entry Fees

Kenyan Adult Citizens and Residents pay  Sh400  to gain entry, while children pay  Sh215 . For Non-Residents, the fee is  $40  for adults and  $20  for children

Nairobi National Park Opening Hours

The Nairobi National Park operates between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm daily and it is open every day of the week. If you plan to combine a safari with a visit to the Nairobi Orphanage and Nairobi Safari Walk, those open between 9.00 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. daily.

Nairobi National Park Giraffe

Is Nairobi National Park Open on Sundays

Yes, the Nairobi National Park is open from 6 am to 6 pm every day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays. We visited on a Sunday morning and found it a great time to go.

Best Time to Visit the Nairobi National Park

The best time to visit the Nairobi National Park is during the dry season, from  June  to  September . It is easier to spot the resident wildlife during these months as the vegetation is less dense and more animals congregate for drinks at the watering holes.

Nairobi National Park Signs

We visited in August and the vegetation was already quite dense. Our lion sightings were very lucky as we could barely see them lying in the grass.

If you do visit during the rainy season, a 4WD is recommended to navigate the terrain. Also, note that the months of April and May usually have heavy rains, so plan accordingly.

Do you need a 4 wheel Drive in Nairobi National Park?

If you’re considering hiring a driver and a guide for your trip, the ‘ Get Your Guide ‘ website is a good resource to find tours that suit your budget and timing…

PS: if you book a tour using the link, I will receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

Things to do on a nairobi national park safari.

It’s set to be a good time with these 4 fun things to do on a Nairobi National Park safari.

Visit the Giraffe Center

“I shut my eyes tight and try not to scream as she comes closer to my face. Her breath is hot, hot, and somewhat stinky (sorry, Betty). But I soon forget about all that when she sweeps the pellet from my lips with one swift,  not-too-rough swipe of her tongue. I smile boldly- that was the first of many giraffe kisses” – James.

There are many impressive facts about the Giraffe Centre , but top on that list is that the centre, with its conservation efforts, has tripled the number of Rothchild’s Giraffes in Kenya.

The centre was founded in 1979 to protect the then critically endangered species. Forty-three years later, the centre still stands, bigger and better than the year before.

From raised 6-meter-high platforms, you can kiss, pet, feed, and take selfies with the giraffes. You can also watch as warthogs scuttle around the place, sniffing for fallen pellets.

Take those tastebuds on a journey of themselves by sampling the tea house’s delicious chai and mandazis.

Stopover at the Daisy Zoovenir (see what they did there) for some keepsakes.

Or head out on a self-guided walk to the Gogo River Sanctuary, a spectacular 1.5km trail with breathtaking views of Nairobi.

Where to Stay

For utterly elegant rooms hallmarked by large windows, private terraces, and impeccable décor, try the Giraffe Manor . Yes, the ambience is to-die-for, and the views nothing short of magical.

Even better, you get to pet giraffes from your room’s terrace or when having breakfast at the hotel’s sizeable windowed restaurant.
