Though careful planning and common sense are two of the best ways to stay safe when traveling, security situations can rapidly change in foreign countries.

That's why the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs has created the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to help keep you up-to-date on relevant security updates from the nearest U.S. consulate, wherever in the world you happen to be.

Here's how to sign up for STEP.

Who should register for STEP?

The primary purpose of STEP is to keep American citizens safe. Here are a few reasons to consider signing up:

• You're traveling to an area that's politically unstable or prone to violence.
• You're taking an extended trip (several weeks or months) where you have limited Wi-Fi access.
• You're traveling for a major event, summit or conference (like the World Cup) that might become the target of protests or attacks.
• You're a minority traveling to an area where you might be targeted as an outsider.
• You'd like an additional safety resource during your trip, no matter the destination.

Some group trips or programs may require participants to enroll. For instance, I had to enroll when I studied abroad in college.

In the event of a rapidly deteriorating situation, such as a coup or natural disaster, STEP can connect you with evacuation efforts or provide important safety information and help you take care of yourself.

How to register

To register, create an account and fill in your personal information and emergency contact details.

Once your account is set up, log in and register each specific trip or residence abroad. You'll repeat this process for each new trip to receive STEP alerts.

You'll then be prompted to enroll any upcoming trips to receive STEP notifications. Select the nearest U.S. consulate to where you'll be staying. Note that "destination" refers to the country (not a specific city, state or territory), and the available options will auto-fill as you type.

Next, fill in the dates of your trip, the reason you're traveling and how you can be reached while abroad. If there are any timely alerts specific to your destination, you'll also be alerted of that information at this point.

Bottom line

It may be helpful to think of STEP like travel insurance: If all goes well, you won't need to use it, and you might even forget you have it.

However, if things go wrong while you're traveling abroad, your local U.S. embassy is the quickest way to get help; the embassy's goal is to ensure all Americans in its jurisdiction are safe and accounted for. This is when STEP notifications can become incredibly important.

The entire sign-up process takes less than five minutes, and the trip registration process takes about 60 seconds.

Made various of contacts with travel…

Made various of contacts with travel agents and direct air lines and the prices for summer holidays to abroad was expensive way above what i expected. Made a call and WhatsApp talk with agent name (Sarah) she made it smoothly and i had 2 card payment separately as it was for 5 people, she made it easier for me and took step by step and advice me as my children passports were way below 6 months and was Honest as she could of easily just taken payments for the tickets as passport not her job. The Russian capital of Moscow was the highest rated smart city in a United Nations review of digital services across 40 global municipalities.

Although Moscow may sound an unlikely contender for the title, its digitisation of government services and integration of new technologies helped it to take top place in July 2018.

Artem Ermolaev, the former Minister of IT for Moscow and current president at the non-profit organisation Smart Cities, says: “We made a big jump from last position in the Russian Federation to first place in the United Nations ratings for smart cities .”

During London Tech Week , Mr Ermolaev explained some of the smart city innovations being used in Moscow.

Bringing Wi-Fi to the metro

Connectivity is crucial to powering any smart city, and one of the places where connectivity is normally restricted is on underground transport.

Ermolaev says: “When you create a smart city, you can’t create it without the infrastructure, so that was our first goal.

“The biggest challenge was the Wi-Fi because we needed to create the opportunity for all citizens to be connected online for free.

“We implemented the most comprehensive underground Wi-Fi network in the metro , which reaches approximately five million people per day.”

Some 330km of the Moscow metro is now covered by Wi-Fi and perhaps more impressively, it was provided at no cost to the local government.

Ermolaev adds: “It was done with zero investment from the city, because we offered telecommunications companies free advertising in return for helping to set up the Wi-Fi network.

“Users have to watch 30 seconds of advertisement before going online but receive free internet connection in return.

“That that gave us the opportunity to bring every citizen online.”

The local authority also gets the additional benefit of being able to collect data on its citizens.

Ermolaev explains the big data  is used to understand what tourists and citizens are interested in and popular places to travel to.

Giving Muscovites a say with Active Citizen app

There are over 300 public services available to Moscow citizens via mobile applications and is the method which 75% of the city’s inhabitants chose to access them.

But, Muscovites are not just passive participants – the app lets them have their say on public affairs too.

Ermolaev says: “Being a smart city is about the citizen’s driving the city – from the very beginning we gave an opportunity for the citizens to vote for any civil act that the government does.”

It’s city-wide e-voting application, called Active Citizen, has over 2.2 million users and to date, over 4,000 votes have been held.

Votes can be held on issues affecting the public and examples include, votes on stricter rules for the sale of alcoholic energy drinks, adjusting the speed limit in the city centre, or where to locate a kindergarten.

Ermolaev adds: “It’s the main instrument we use for e-democracy.

“One of the biggest challenges for this will come at the end of September when electronic voting will be used for the Moscow parliamentary elections.

“All votes will be recorded in the blockchain, which will give an opportunity to test the technology on large amount of users.”

Other uses of the app include using crowd-sourced knowledge to highlight issues for the local council to deal with.

“If you see that a broken bench or potholes in the road, you can take a photo and send it to the government via the app,” says Ermolaev.

“From there the government will have eight days to fix the issue and, if they don’t, the problem will be escalated up the ranks until it is resolved.

“It’s helped to build trust between citizens and the government.”

How education works in the Moscow smart city

School-life for truants and troublemakers has been made “a nightmare” for pupils in Moscow, according to Ermolaev.

The latest edtech innovation gives parents unprecedented insight into their child’s time at school.

“Every school child has to enter the school gate through the use of a plastic card,” he says.

“Once they enter, the parent or carer receives an instant push notification or SMS to their mobile to confirm that their child has entered the school.

“When the pupil is given a grade at school, whether it’s A, B or C, the parents are also notified of the results via a message.

“After that, the child goes to lunch and decides to buy two Snickers chocolate bars, even though their mother told them not too.

“Once again, the parents get a message to tell them how many calories their child ate.

“It means the parents can come back home knowing whether they should be in a good or bad mood when they greet their child.”

As part of the government’s efforts to digitise the current education system, all teachers and pupils in Moscow have personal laptops and tablets – where they can be sent tutorial sessions and access textbooks.

Although Ermolaev admits, “on the one hand it’s not good for the kid”, it does allow schools to understand the different elements of school life that have an impact on results.

He explains: “We can correlate the results of the kids with what they are reading, the homework they completed or how far they live from school.

“Investing in digitalisation allows us to make forecasts and use big data and analysis to create digital twins , not just to improve education, but also for healthcare and transport.”

Travel has long been an effective reward in loyalty program portfolios; that’s why most programs (95%) offer them in some form or another.

What is the purpose of a loyalty program ? The simple answer depends on the brand or company implementing it. For some, the primary goal will be customer retention; for others, it will be recognizing and rewarding high-value customers. Still, other companies might perceive their loyalty program as a mechanism for driving incremental revenue.

In the aggregate, however, the goals all brands hold for their loyalty initiatives can evolve over time. That’s one of the key trends we identified in our 2024 Travel Loyalty Outlook repor t — that the goalposts for loyalty have moved, and they’ve moved toward increasing customer lifetime value (CLV).

How can brands best leverage their loyalty programs to deliver on that goal? What are the challenges that might prevent their loyalty strategies from maximizing CLV? And what technologies can help them overcome those challenges?

Evolving loyalty goals

First, let’s examine the drivers behind brands’ shifting loyalty priorities. Our survey of more than 100 loyalty professionals in the US found that 29% of brands now consider increasing CLV to be the most important goal of their loyalty strategies, up from 16% in 2021. That 2021 survey , conducted during a pandemic year, showed that loyalty providers' primary objective was attracting new members. Given the immediate uncertainty surrounding travel-related business, brands naturally focused on expanding and preserving their customer base to remain viable.

As that uncertainty has waned, brands’ priorities have turned toward longer-term (and profitability-related) goals, like increasing CLV and boosting loyalty program member spending (9% in 2021 to 11% in the 2023 survey). Brands’ tactical goals for their loyalty programs for the upcoming year also reflect their strategic aim of driving customer lifetime value through increased engagement.

Encouraging existing members to move up a tier, increasing total spending through the loyalty program, and introducing new rewards or earning redemption options – the top three forward-looking loyalty program goals, according to our survey – all signal a results-focused loyalty orientation.

The challenges brands face in reaching their loyalty targets

Achieving those results isn’t guaranteed, of course, and brands’ self-reported challenges describe significant hurdles in the race to maximize CLV. For instance, the top loyalty program-related challenge cited by survey respondents was maintaining appropriate customer service levels (26%), followed closely by demonstrating the value of rewards to program members (20%).

If brands can’t rely on their loyalty programs to communicate value to members or adequately support them when they need help, it will be challenging to retain customers long enough to boost their lifetime value to the brand.

Brands also struggle to align their loyalty program capabilities to customer expectations. According to our survey, 21% of consumers of loyalty programs with travel rewards are frustrated by difficult or complex processes to earn and redeem points or miles, while just 14% of brands think this is what consumers find most frustrating. Fortunately, loyalty program technology focusing on travel rewards and booking capabilities can help close this expectation gap.

Where does travel fit in?

Travel has long been an effective reward in loyalty program portfolios ; that’s why most programs (95%) offer them in some form or another. Our survey data also shows that American consumers are looking for a variety of ways to reduce travel costs, including redeeming points to lower the overall expense of their trip (46%), booking discounted travel through their program’s booking portal (31%), and using their membership to secure discounts with travel providers (29%).

This makes travel rewards an integral tool for delivering value to members and increasing their CLV to the brand through more frequent and consistent loyalty program engagement.

Loyalty technology designed to drive CLV

But not all travel rewards are designed and deployed the same way. For a travel loyalty program to successfully drive engagement and maximize CLV, it must leverage a flexible loyalty currency, employ effective marketing initiatives, and maintain quality customer service. 

A flexible loyalty currency allows programs to modify points’ value, integrate new savings, and fund bonus points or miles through the margin earned on other travel products. Loyalty programs can then use this flexibility to reward or incentivize members for desired actions, like reaching a higher membership tier. Full-service marketing capabilities help loyalty programs communicate their value to members more effectively and eliminate divergences in expectations. And quality customer service can be the key to keeping members engaged for years to come.

Notice that “years to come” is the operative phrase when it comes to customer lifetime value. Brands can only maximize this vital metric by focusing on customers’ long-term satisfaction and affinity. A loyalty program with an attractive portfolio of travel rewards has the flexibility to engage and reward members in various ways and offers excellent customer support, which can be a critical tool for maximizing CLV. To truly optimize their loyalty strategies, brands only need to identify the right travel loyalty partner to help them achieve their most important goals.
