luxury nile cruise 3 nights

Many thanks for great information!

luxury nile cruise 3 nights

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

COMMON ITINERARIES ABOARD 3 NIGHT NILE CRUISES

4 day 3 night cruise

Luxor temple, constructed over hundreds of years by Amenhotep III, Ramses II, Tutankhamun, and other pharaohs

The Nile is a unique river for many reasons. One of the largest in the world, stretching more than four thousand miles, it also runs from south to north. It enters Egypt at its southern border, via Lake Nasser and the High Aswan Dam. It then continues winding its way through the central area of the country, exiting at its delta and into the Mediterranean, east of modern Alexandria. Used for centuries by Egyptians in order to farm and travel, its banks are dotted with sites that create unbreakable links to the land’s ancient inhabitants.

Floating with the current, many 3 night Nile cruises depart from the southern city of Aswan, they head towards their final destination at Luxor. The sites visited will vary from ship to ship, but the must-see destinations include:

  • Aswan – Travelers might arrive in the city after completing a Lake Nasser cruise or a land excursion elsewhere. Boarding the ship, they begin their adventures, often with time spent in Aswan exploring such sites as the Aswan High Dam, the amazing Unfinished Obelisk (dating to Queen Hatshepsut and left in the quarry since it cracked during removal), and the stunning Temple of Philae (spared from the waters of the Nile, and easily one of the most impressive structures of its kind).
  • Kom Ombo – Almost all 3 night Nile cruises ensure their travelers time at this impressive and entirely unique site. A double temple, it features two of everything, including courts, temples and halls. One side was dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god and the other to Horus the Elder. An ancient site that was famous for its native crocodiles, it is also where some unique reliefs depicting medical tools and techniques can be viewed.
  • Edfu – Ranking as one of the most well-preserved temples of the ancient world, it sat hidden in the sands for more than two thousand years. It is large and impressive, with a massive pylon covered with beautiful reliefs dedicated to the god Horus. It has an intact roof, too, which is considered remarkable for such an ancient structure.
  • Luxor – Arriving at this ancient city does not signify the end of 3 night Nile cruises. Instead, travelers enjoy a night floating along the banks of the city as well as tours of both the East and West Banks. The eastern bank is the home of the unforgettable temple complexes of Luxor and Karnak. The city was once a great capital for the rulers of the 11th through 20th dynasties. Known also as Waset and Thebes, it sits at the top of most travelers’ lists of must-see locations.

Those on 3 night Nile cruises will enjoy a tour of the two large temples, and then a day in the West Bank. It is here that you find such world-famous sites as the rock-cut temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Valley of the Kings. The latter is home to more than 60 tombs, many of which are the final resting places for pharaohs of different periods. The most famous of them all being that of King Tutankhamun, and it is an essential sight on most 3 night Nile cruises.

After departure at Luxor, travelers on 3 night Nile cruises can enjoy any number of possible adventures. Perhaps you wish to head west and see the desert and its amazing oases? Maybe a land tour northward to sites like Abydos or Tel El Amarna is on your agenda? Perhaps you hope to find ways to cruise farther northward to Cairo? You can and should think of the different 3 night Nile cruises as an ideal way to experience some of the most relevant and fascinating remnants of the Ancient Egyptian. As part of a longer or broader exploration into the history and sites relating to pharaonic Egypt, 3 night Nile cruises are a great resource.

Don’t forget to consider some time on the waters  before  your Nile cruise. After all, beginning at Aswan means you might do a Lake Nasser cruise before setting sail down the Nile. This would let you see the famed Abu Simbel and many of the stunning, preserved sites from Nubian Egypt, too. The options are endless and all of Egypt awaits your visit and your amazing journey through the past.

DAY 1: EMBARK IN ASWAN | MAJESTIC PHILAE

Arrive Aswan Airport , Where you are met by your Journey to Egypt Tour Guide ( At EXIT DOOR , holding a sign with your name) and begin your day of exploring by visiting the majestic Temple of Philae . Ride a motorized boat to the island of Agilika . This sacred complex was dedicated to the goddess Isis and reflects a fusion of three great civilizations — Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The temple was dismantled and then painstakingly reassembled when the Aswan High Dam was constructed. Proceed to the granite quarries and site of the Unfinished Obelisk . Illustrating the skills of Egypt’s stonemasons, this monolith is one-third taller than any other ancient Egyptian obelisk. Then, Board your Nile cruise boat.   Enjoy lunch. Later, Ride Like a Local around the Aswan Islands in a felucca , while enjoying a refreshing Scenic Sundowner.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2: OPTIONAL ABU SIMBEL | CRUISING THE NILE

Discover Abu Simbel , the commanding twin temples of Ramses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari. The former’s façade is dominated by four 70-foot-tall statues of the pharaoh. Perhaps even more impressive, this entire site was disassembled and moved here to save it from the floodwaters caused by the Aswan High Dam.

Cruise to Kom Ombo . Disembark at Kom Ombo (hill of gold) to visit the Greco- Roman temple dedicated to Haroeris (the sun god) and Sobek (the crocodile god), whom some ancient Egyptians considered the creator of the world. View the mummified remains of several crocodiles that once basked along the ancient Nile shore, just as their descendants do today. Back on board,  Cruise to Edfu .

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: TEMPLE OF HORUS | CRUISING THE NILE

Today, view the Temple of Horus , falcon-headed god of the sky. Built in 230 BC by Ptolemy III, this amazingly well-preserved and colorful structure reveals what temple worship in ancient Egypt was like. Back on board,  Cruise to Luxor .

Arrive in Luxor , journey to the east bank of the Nile , the Temple of Karnak , where generations of pharaohs wished to record their names. Walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall, strolling among its expertly aligned columns, which soar to 80 feet high. Continue to the striking Temple of Luxor . View the three large statues of Ramses II along the front of the temple pylons; the Courtyard of Ramses II; and the Colonnade of Amenhotep III, with its 50-foot-high columns. Walk in their shadows as visitors have done since antiquity and ponder the astonishing feats of engineering it took to create them.

DAY 4: DISEMBARK IN LUXOR | VALLEY OF THE KINGS

This morning, explore the west bank of the Nile River and the Necropolis of Thebes, and view the Colossi of Memnon . Next, arrive at the architecturally stunning Temple of Hatshepsut , ancient Egypt’s first female pharaoh and regarded today as one of its most successful. Continue to the Valley of the Kings , burial ground of the pharaohs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a period of 500 years beginning in the 16th century BC, tombs were built along this valley for pharaohs and nobles, including that of “the boy king,” Tutankhamun. Enter the tomb of Tutankhamun ( Extra ticket On Spot ) - found in 1922 by British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter- to discover the secrets of this storied chamber.

Transfer to the Luxor airport.

3 Night Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor

On the first day of your 3 Night Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor trip, Upon arrival at Aswan Airport, you will be transferred to your luxury cruise ship for a 3-day Nile river cruise . After checking in, you will start a day tour, starting with a boat trip to Philae Temple , which was built in honor of the goddess Isis . Goddess of motherhood and healing. Across the gigantic walls of the Temple of Philae is the epic story of the wife of the underworld ruler, Osiris, and her son, Horus.

Unfinished Obelisk : The unfinished golden obelisk of Hatshepsut, which would have been 42 meters high, is the coolest thing that has ever happened. Aswan Luxor cruise 3 nights

On the second day of the 3 Night Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor , You will enjoy a guided tour of Abu Simbel Temple early in the morning. Discover Abu Simbel, the commanding twin temples of Ramses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari. Four 70-foot-tall statues of the pharaoh dominate the former’s façade. Perhaps even more impressive, this entire site was disassembled and moved here to save it from the floodwaters caused by the Aswan High Dam.

After returning from Abu Simbel, the ship will sail to Kom Ombo and Edfu . In Kom Ombo, you will visit the Temple of Kom Ombo, which is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek. The Greco- Roman temple was dedicated to Haroeris (the sun god) and Sobek (the crocodile god), whom some ancient Egyptians considered the world’s creator. After this visit, you will sail toward Edfu. You will be taken to see the Temple of Horus, dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. This relatively young pharaonic temple is well-preserved and, therefore, imposing. In the evening Egyptian Folkloric Show party will be operated by staff on board.

When to take a Nile cruise trip?

The peak season is from November to February when temperatures are often lower than in the prior shoulder season (June to August), typically higher. It’s best to go in the morning when it’s cooler and spend the rest of the day doing things ashore, like shopping and seeing the felucca. There will be more time for fun activities.

10 valuable tips for Nile Cruise:

  • Firstly, after checking in for a cruise, it is advised to leave valuables in the safety deposit box of your rooms, as all cabins have a private safe!
  • If you want to buy any items from the shops on board, the opportunity to shop in general is limited due to the small size of these shops. But on the other hand, you will have plenty of time to check what you are buying and bargain the price!
  • Most cruise boats provide telephone facilities on board, but the sound quality is not as good as on land.
  • We recommend visiting a bank to change your money before sailing, as most boats do not offer to exchange money, and you won’t have access to land banks while sailing.
  • To make the right decisions about your Nile cruise, you should figure out your exact budget, how much money you want to spend, and how many days you want to take off.
  • Pick the right Nile River Cruise that will better suit you, like a deluxe Nile cruise or standard Nile cruise , a luxury Nile cruise , and an Ultra Luxury Nile cruise .
  • The tour guide is one of the essential parts of a Nile River Cruise. Between Luxor and Aswan , the tour guide will tell you about ancient Egypt’s amazing things.
  • Make sure the Nile River Cruise you choose has all the amenities you want and need.
  • The best time to go on a Nile cruise is in winter, fall, or spring when the temperature is around 21 C, and the weather is delightful.
  • The best time for a Nile River cruise is between 3 and 7 days so that each traveler can see most of Luxor and Aswan’s Attractions .

What People Say About Us

Thank you Egypt Fun Tours for a most memorable trip. I admit I didn’t do any of the planning (it was all done by my boyfriend) but as you can read in the reviews below Hani (the owner of Egypt Fun Tours) is superbly organized and accommodating with scheduling.

My boyfriend and I, and our dearest mutual friend, booked the 7Days-6Nights tour. In short time, we visited Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor sailing down the down the Nile, pit stopping to see key sites at these location – and so much more!!! We got to know the ancient and modern egypt in depth thanks to Hani’s impressive knowledge. He also enlightened us on the people and their beliefs and went as far as showing us what a typical life looks like. I cannot express the level of personalized service Hani offered us. He was flexible to adapt to our requirements and added sites to our schedule that was not part of the tour simply to ensure we were 100% satisfied with our experience in Egypt.

I went to Egypt practically blind-folded, not knowing what to expect, especially considering the time we had decided to go (December 2020 – we were the first group that Hani met with after months of having to put his tour agency on hold considering the pandemic) yet he managed to surpass all of our expectations. I felt so incredibly lucky for us to have stumbled on Hani. I would recommend Egypt Fun Tours to anyone and everyone. It was truly, HANDS DOWN, the best cultural experience I’ve ever had. You’ll be in the best of hands.

Nille cruise,Luxor and Aswan where amazing sites to see, specially when you have with you the best tour guide in Egypt .Hamada was absolutely fantastic, lots of information and some of them not spoken by others. This guy was not only a simple tour guide for us, he became a good friend also. Was a one in lifetime experience. Highly recommend Fun Tours. Really a great experience.

Hamada was incredible! So knowledgeable and kind. He had information about every item, street corner, and relic we looked at. Any questions we had, he had answers! He even made sure to give us tips while walking through the crowds so that’s we would feel more comfortable when being approached by vendors. Oh and the food?! He took us to the best places! Delicious food!! We tried Egyptian fried chicken, falafel for the first time, the best shawarma in the city (we love food). We even got to meet his beautiful wife and children and try some “French” Egyptian coffee in their home! Truly made friends for life!! We’ve promised to host him and the family when they travel to America for the first time! Such an incredible experience, and Hamada (and family) made it that much more memorable and amazing!

Everything You Need To Know Before Embarking On A Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise is on nearly every international traveler’s wish list. The wonders of ancient Egypt go way beyond the pyramids and the sphinx, with countless treasures lying further south, a stretch away from Cairo, lying either within reach of Luxor or Aswan, which is why most people opt for a cruise between the two cities, stopping off at the most important sites along the way.

Having visited Cairo before, a Nile cruise had been on my wish list for years until I finally found the right ship, which I knew I would enjoy, together with the right duration of cruise and itinerary to suit me. It took a lot of research and some luck to chance upon the cruise that was right for me: very small, few people, historic connections, a touch of the glamor of 1920s- and 1930s-style travel, and plenty of class. I found my ideal cruise on the SS Sudan , the last true paddle steamer on the Nile, the one Agatha Christie sailed on and where she wrote Death on the Nile — and where the subsequent movies were filmed. Small enough to allow for privacy, large enough for comfort, with a five-night, six-day itinerary between Luxor and Aswan.

But what is perfect for me isn’t necessarily perfect for everybody else. Some might want a pool, a shop, more people to socialize with, or maybe more modern cabins, and probably going from Aswan to Luxor, or even cruising the whole way from Cairo to Aswan. Timing is crucial as well, as is deciding what to do at either end. There are many things to consider before embarking on a Nile cruise, so, here I have listed a few points to mull over and research before you book yourself that trip of a lifetime.

Up Or Down River?

Let’s start with some nomenclature you will need to go along the right route: Cruising up the Nile means you are going south, toward the source of the Nile, which, by the way, I recently discovered in Uganda. Cruising down the Nile is sailing toward the estuary in the Mediterranean. But, just to confuse things, Upper Egypt is in fact southern Egypt, while Lower Egypt is in the north, by the coast.

Most Nile Cruises, except for the ones setting off from Cairo and cruising all the way up the Nile, actually sail only in Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan.

I am unsure about what the statistics are when it comes to preferences, but all the cruise ships in Upper Egypt either cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor. Both Luxor and Aswan have airports you can fly into from Cairo, the main international airport in Egypt, so the choice really is yours. That said, personally, I felt that going from Luxor to Aswan was my preferred option simply because — in my mind — Aswan is so much prettier than Luxor. And from Aswan, you can travel to the temples in Abu Simbel, leaving you with the best bit at the end of your journey. But many people would argue the opposite and there really is no right or wrong.

Hotels At Either End

While many travelers, mostly those who are time poor, head straight from the airport to the cruise ship and, once docked after the cruise, fly straight back out again, I would like to plead for a night or two at either end. Not only does it give you the option of overcoming any jet lag or travel fatigue, but also there are some lovely historic hotels that are worth spending a night in. In Luxor, the famous Winter Palace is a historic hotel, a little frayed around the edges, but with a fabulous garden and a pedigree of former guests that is hard to beat. The only place that can beat the guest list of the Winter Palace is the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Agatha Christie stayed at the end of her cruise, and you can take a tour through numerous suites named after illustrious guests who stayed there over the last century. And the hotel offers rooms with some of my favorite views in the world .

What Kind Of Boat

There are essentially four types of boats on the Nile that can take you from A to B. There are modern cruise ships, relatively small when compared to ocean-going cruise ships with around 50 cabins, but many with swimming pools, cabins with balconies, and shops and restaurants on board. There is the SS Sudan , alone in its class, without amenities such as pools or shops, but with only five suites and 18 cabins, plus a superb sundeck, a bar, and a restaurant. Then there are the dahabiyas, beautiful boats with a sail at either end — and even more private with many only catering to around 12 passengers. The dahabiyas come without engines, but often have a tugboat for added speed, and offer the most tranquil and secluded cruises. Lastly, there are the feluccas, small sailboats, where in some cases you can spend one night on board, but generally, these lovely and traditional sailboats are only used for day trips.

Where Are The Stops?

Between the most popular cruise harbors of Luxor and Aswan lie the most amazing sights, most of which are taken in by all the various cruises, because, after all, that is why everybody is there. The main stops are Qena, a little downriver from Luxor, with the Dendera and Abydos temples; Luxor , with the various valleys of tombs; Edfu with the fabulous Kom Ombo temple; and lastly Aswan, with a visit to Philae. On a five-night cruise upriver (so going south), you will stay overnight in Qena, Luxor, Edfu, and two nights in Aswan.

Length Of Cruise

Most cruises between Luxor and Aswan take between three and seven days, the shorter ones skipping Qena and only staying one night in Aswan, the longer ones adding extra nights, usually in Luxor.

If you are lucky enough to have the time to sail from Cairo to Aswan , the itinerary takes a minimum of 11 nights, but more often than not 14 nights, with sightseeing in Cairo included, usually reaching Luxor on Day 11. Despite the current of the Nile, which is evident but quite slow, the cruises up or down the river take the same amount of time.

When Best To Travel

The best time to visit Upper (southern) Egypt is between October and April. That said, I went at the end of October, and the temperatures were still in the 90s Fahrenheit, making sightseeing a bit of an exhausting undertaking. In the summer, these temperatures are much, much worse, so travel then is best avoided. In December and January, the coldest months, the temperatures hover around the mid-70s Fahrenheit. As for rain, the rainy season is between October and April, with a negligible spike at less than an inch of rain in October.

What You Must Pack

Even if yours is a fancy cruise, pack light, pack layers, and pack sensible shoes. It will be hot and sandy whenever you go exploring. In the Valley of the Kings, for example, there is much sand, no shade, and plenty of stairs and steps to conquer, so light clothing but good shoes that keep you firmly on the ground are useful. Bring a light cover for the evening and something nice for the boat. A clothes brush to get the sand and dust off you at the end of the outing and a handheld fan to bring you some air when it gets warm are essential. And, if you like a tipple or two, know that in Egypt imported wine and champagne are extortionately expensive, so, get your full allowance in the duty-free shop and enjoy along the way.

What To Do Before (Or After)

Chances are that you will fly into Cairo, and unless you are embarking in Cairo, some sightseeing is a must. Allow at least two extra days to see the main sights before heading south. And once you are in the south, note that all cruise ships stop at Aswan because of the dams. If you want to see Abu Simbel, you can either fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel or take a tour either by bus or private car , but you will need to book the car in advance. This is because the tourist road caravan sets off first thing in the morning and is escorted by police all the way between Aswan and Abu Simbel because of potential bandits, and all travelers need to be registered and accounted for by the day before at the latest.

What To Read And Watch About The Nile

To get you in the mood and keep you going while you’re there, here are some books and films set in exactly the places you will be visiting, so you can go, “Oh, I know that place!” as you read or watch.

  • Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
  • The films Death on the Nile from 1978 with Peter Ustinov , 2004 with David Suchet , and 2022 with Kenneth Branagh
  • Some very light but fun mysteries by Elizabeth Peters , with lots of places to be recognized
  • The superb old travel book by Amelia B. Edwards A Thousand Miles up the Nile , first published in 1877

One fantastic historical TV series presented by Bettany Hughes is entitled The Nile and is full of information, making for perfect viewing before and after your trip.

Pro Tip: In many places, you will either have to pay for a photography permit, or, at times, won’t be able to take photographs. But don’t let that stop you from carrying your camera everywhere with you!
