Who are the Tour de France commentators?

Find out who's behind the mic and reporting on the ground for the respective Tour de France broadcasters

The Tour de France is cycling's biggest event and transcends the everyday fans of the sport to reach millions of people around the world.

Because of the level of interest, TV channels up their coverage and provide wall-to-wall live broadcast of the race as well as in-depth highlights programmes and analysis.

That enhancement of coverage includes recruiting the sport's top commentators and pundits to scrutinise the goings on in the race, but who are the people behind the voices we hear every day on television?

ITV Tour de France commentators

ITV has been a long-time broadcaster of the Tour de France on free-to-air television in the UK, and their line-up of commentators has been set for some time.

Commentary veteran Phil Liggett and the late Paul Sherwen provided commentary from a US feed up until 2016, when ITV brought in their own commentators. Journalist (and Rouleur columnist) Ned Boulting took over the mic along with former British pro and four-time Tour de France stage winner David Millar, and the pair have been working on the Tour for ITV ever since.

David Millar

Two-time British champion Peter Kennaugh works as a pundit on ITV, analysing the racing alongside another former pro and three-time Tour stage winner Chris Boardman and host Gary Imlach.

ITV also send reporters to work on the ground at the Tour. Author and journalist Daniel Friebe provides colour segments for the highlights programme as well interviewing riders pre- and post-stage. Another author and journalist Matt Rendall provides interviews and on the ground from the Tour as well.

Eurosport/GCN Tour de France commentators

In the UK, Global Cycling Network have upped the ante after launching their online race streaming platform in 2020. Since being acquired by Discovery, subsequently part of  Warner Bros. Discovery, the GCN and Eurosport coverage has converged and now holds pre-race and post-race shows every day, as well as start-to-finish coverage without adverts (on streaming).

In the commentary box is a mix of Eurosport veterans and newer recruits. Commentator and author Carlton Kirby has been on Eurosport's cycling coverage for a very long time, and shares the lead commentary duty with another long-time Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch, interchanging throughout the day. There's also the voice of Jonathan Harris-Bass from Eurosport HQ to talk about food and other stuff when the action lulls.

They're joined by former pro and four-time Tour de France green jersey and five-time stage winner (amongst many other victories) Sean Kelly on analysis commentary. Another Tour great, Australian Robbie McEwen, who sprinted to 12 stage victories and three green jerseys, joined the channel this year also drops in on commentary as well as appearing in the studio programmes either side of the race.

Likewise, GCN presenter and former British pro Daniel Lloyd combines stints on commentary with appearing in the studio.

The analysis show either side of the race is hosted by journalist and presenter (and Rouleur columnist) Orla Chennaoui. She is joined every day by McEwen, Lloyd and former British champion Adam Blythe in the studio to discuss the daily happenings.

On the ground, retired Austrian pro Bernhard Eisel, former British champion Matt Stephens, and former British pro Hannah Walker interview riders.

Over in the US, British commentator and journalist Phil Liggett is covering his 50th edition of the Tour de France and his 45th as a commentator, having first travelled to the Tour in 1973.

He's joined by former US pro Bob Roll on co-comms, with NBC journalist Steve Porino and former South African pro (and Tour de France stage winner) Robbie Hunter reporting from the ground.

As well as hosting wall-to-wall coverage, NBC also has analysis programmes for each stage, with retired US pro and Vuelta a España winner Chris Horner joined by another retired American pro, Christian Vande Velde, to provide expert insight. Presenter Paul Burmeister hosts the pre- and post-race shows.

The Transcendent Thrill of Watching the Tour de France

By Bill McKibben

A small group of riders riding through sunflowers.

I live in the mountains of the Northeast, and normally the last thing I want in the spacious days of summer is something to watch on TV. But this year we’ve had one flooding rain after another, and when the skies have cleared they really haven’t––the plume of smoke from Canada’s wildfires has hovered day after day, and many mornings, like this one, the roadside sign that usually offers up warnings about construction ahead has instead flashed this grim warning: “Air Quality Alert/Limit Outdoor Activity.” So I’ve been grateful for the daily distraction from climate dread provided by the Tour de France, arguably the world’s biggest annual sporting spectacle.

And in this case I come to praise not mainly the noble rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar (more on them later) but the broadcast crew assembled by Peacock, the NBC streaming service, to cover the contest’s twenty-one days of racing. Since each broadcast lasts five or six hours (the daily stages are hundreds of kilometres long, and even at the astonishing pace of these cyclists it takes a while), that’s more than a hundred hours of coverage in a month—maybe equivalent to an N.F.L. season’s worth of broadcasting time. And yet it is a steady pleasure.

The coverage begins each morning in a Connecticut studio where a trio—Paul Burmeister, Sam Bewley, and Brent Bookwalter—stand quite formally behind a lectern, wearing suits, ties, and pocket squares. (I have no idea why—perhaps a contract with some haberdasher.) Burmeister is a TV guy—his smooth patter has graced everything from Notre Dame football to ski jumping. But his two partners are bike guys—Bewley, a former Olympic bronze medallist for New Zealand, and Bookwalter, a Michigan native and a veteran of the Grand Tour, in Europe. They begin by forecasting the day ahead, which is a more complicated task than you might think.

The Tour de France is famous for the yellow jersey that its over-all leader wears—when the race finally ends up on the Champs-Élysées, on Sunday, the Danish cyclist Vingegaard will almost certainly wear the maillot jaune for having made the 3,405-kilometre trip in the shortest elapsed time. But his duel with the Slovene Pogačar has been only part of the story. The race also features the polka-dot jersey, awarded to the man who wins the most summit climbs in the mountains of the Alps and Pyrenees, and the green jersey, which goes to the fastest of the sprinters. On “flat stages,” which avoid the mountains, those sprinters usually wind up in a chaotic dash to the line; on mountainous stages, the sprinters gather far behind the main peloton, willing their bodies slowly up the hills to meet the daily time cutoff and stay in the race. Meanwhile, each day’s stage is a race of its own, with glory to whoever manages to win; each rider, in turn, is a member of an eight-man team, and they can and do work together, breaking the headwinds for their stars. All in all, there’s plenty to talk about.

And the talk, after half an hour of studio preliminaries, moves to France, and the persons of Phil Liggett and Bob Roll, as natural a TV pair as I’ve ever seen. Liggett, an Englishman who will turn eighty shortly after this Tour concludes, has covered the Tour for more than fifty years, which is very nearly half of its hundred and ten renditions. Roll is merely in his sixties, and declares his youth by pre-riding many of the hill climbs on the morning of the stage, the better to describe the pain the racers are about to endure. He is, I think, the actual heart of the coverage. Liggett talks more, chattering happily away with many useful references to the long history of the race. But sometimes he gets a name or a team or a time wrong. (He occasionally conflates young riders with their fathers or even grandfathers, who raced before them.) Roll, like the patient wife of an endearingly addled older husband, offers a gentle correction, but mostly he provides strategic insight that comes from his own long career in the saddle; he has an almost preternatural instinct for the glorious moment each day when one of the leaders will launch a superhuman uphill “attack” to open a gap on his rivals.

When that happens, the other key member of the team—another former pro cyclist, Christian Vande Velde—is often on hand to commentate. He spends each race day on the back of a motorcycle, watching the action up close and chatting through car windows with the directors of the various teams who will share bits of strategy. This sounds like an easy enough job, until you remember that, much of the time, he’s whipping downhill at sixty miles per hour or more, following the racers through the harrowing descents. (In the Tour de Suisse, a warmup race for this year’s Tour, one rider died after a high-speed crash.) Oh, and then there’s also Steve Porino, a dead ringer in look and affect for the late Fred Willard in his role as the broadcaster in “Best in Show”; Porino ranges ahead of the riders, looking for people along the road to interview, often managing to find the stars’ parents, whom he coaxes from their camper vans to offer anecdotes about the athletic precociousness of their sons as small boys.

Even with all these voices, there’s a lot of air to fill, and so Roll often serves as tour guide: the broadcast feed, provided to TV channels around the world by the Tour organizers, features many long helicopter shots, and when nothing much is happening in the race the camera tends to linger on châteaux and churches, and so there’s an ongoing impromptu lesson in medieval history. All in all, a low-key way to pass the day, a gentle frame for the eventual injections of high drama.

And, oh, that drama! This year’s two stars are so evenly matched that two weeks into the race only ten seconds separated them. (Vingegaard finally surged ahead on Tuesday’s time trial.) Many of the stages end with massive ascents into the lunar landscape of high and treeless mountains, and sooner or later one of the two tries to shake the other with a massive acceleration; the tension hinges on whether his foe will be able to match the pace or will watch his rival disappear up the mountain. The commentators are fully up to the task of capturing the nobility of these painful assaults, coming after hours of fast pedalling. (Oh, how one hopes these two are not doping.) That catharsis—it often lasts just seconds—is the centerpiece of these long broadcasts, and a daily reminder of why sports are, in some way, a serious part of our lives: there are few other venues for such public displays of courage and resolve, and the resulting joy or despair.

That’s a point, perhaps, that’s less obvious now than it once was. The Times announced earlier this month that it was disbanding its sports department. It will now send its readers to a subscription service that it recently acquired, the Athletic. I read it, and it occasionally offers long and engaging features in the lineage of Sports Illustrated . But mainly it provides acres of words about the main team sports in the U.S., often to do with contracts and statistics. It is sports as business—the comments sections are filled with disgruntled fans moaning about the general managers of their local teams. (One suspects that its most devoted readers are the ever-growing ranks of sports gamblers.) Transcendence is rare, unless you find it in a spreadsheet.

Endurance sports such as the Tour de France, which traditionally receive little coverage in the U.S., are perhaps a more reliable vehicle for that transcendence, and Peacock deserves credit for covering them—Liggett and Roll have also worked the Grand Tours of Spain and Italy, and the network also offers up coverage of swimming and track and field. Doubtless this has something to do with NBC owning the rights to the Olympics; we are always on the Road to Someplace (at the moment Paris, next summer). And my plaudits have limits: the network recently stopped covering Nordic skiing, which means that the winter TV sports scene features very little long-distance agony.

Still, the Tour de France redeems much else. There’s no escaping reality entirely—the weather has been heating up in Europe as the Tour proceeds, and this is easy to see as the racers warm up in ice-filled vests. But, when the race finishes, the commentators help viewers wind down their heart rates with another half hour of commentary—Roll is even able to translate from most of the European languages that the racers use to offer their post-race clichés. England was wise enough to award Liggett an M.B.E. (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), some years ago; we have no such way to honor our broadcasters save devoting a few hours each day to listening and appreciating. ♦

Tour de France Commentary: A Change Of The Guard

' src=

Several years on from major generational change, Matthew Keenan, Bridie O’Donnell and Robbie McEwen are again providing the call for not just Aussie audiences – but the English language world feed of the Tour de France.

In 2017 Keenan & McEwen replaced the highly-respected commentary team of Phil Liggett, known around the world as ‘the voice of cycling’, and his long-time friend and co-commentator, Paul Sherwen. Sadly Paul Sherwen passed away in December 2018 – you can read our tribute to Paul here.

sam tour de france commentator

“Matthew Keenan and Robbie McEwen are at the helm of SBS’s commentary and Australian voices will call every stage from start to finish,” SBS said at the time.

Keenan & McEwen Go Global

“Three-time green jersey winner Robbie McEwen and renowned cycling commentator Matthew Keenan also take up the new role as commentators for the Tour de France’s official world feed, broadcast in over 50 territories.”

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen continue to offer analysis and insight into stages, regions and individuals. The pair will also continue to provide Tour de France commentary for the American NBC network.

Following last year’s announcement Matt Keenan told AAP he was ‘pinching himself’. “Phil is an iconic figure in sports broadcasting,” Keenan said. “You don’t try to replace him — you can’t.”

Your Thoughts?

Over on the Bicycling Australia Facebook page many continue to have their say on the change of guard. Responses have been mixed, with many saying Liggett and Sherwen are, and will always be,  the voices of the tour.

“Going to miss Phil and Paul. What they do well is capture the romance of the Tour,” wrote Ben Kingsbury.

“For me The Tour is not all about the cycling. It’s about the food and the chateaus and the landmarks and the spectacle. Matt and Robbie are excellent with dealing with the technicalities of racing but struggle with the rest. It is wonderful to watch as the cyclists pass a 16th century monastery, the camera pans back and Paul gives the perfect French pronunciation and proceeds to explain from personal experience details of what we are looking at. I understand Phil in particular is a little past it and mixes up the cyclists names, and uses his usual phrases such as “going into the red zone” but for me he will be sadly missed. The Tour won’t be the same without the duo.”

Karyn McDonald wrote “As much as I love Robbie McEwen and Matthew Keenan, Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are THE voices of Le Tour de France as they have been for many years. Won’t be quite the same without them…their dulcet tones of commentary will be sorely missed.”

Many have expressed bitter disapointed, a stream of followers clearly upset with the SBS decision.

Michael Begley: “Nooooooo!! Big mistake SBS. Phil and Paul capture the beauty of the whole tour. Not just the cycling.”

Peter Signorini: “Keenan and McEwan are competent enough, but just boring in comparison to Ligget and Sherwin.”

Shaun Walford: “Phil Liggett is the best commentator in the world for cycling, what’s the point in getting rid of him?”

We are keen to hear your thoughts, have your say in comments below.

Take a leaf from Sean Kelly’s commentary……. I’ve actually had to mute the tv so I can enjoy the racing without hearing the continuous dribble.

Commentary: sam bennett proves that there is crying at the tour de france, we all shed a tear for sam bennett after his emotional tour de france stage win on tuesday. bennett has been waiting his entire career for a chance to win at the sport's biggest race..

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Wait — why are we crying? We’re all crying because Sam Bennett was crying.

Bennett, the Irish sprinter on Deceuninck–Quick-Step, fought back tears midway through his post-race television interview after he won Tuesday’s 10th stage of the Tour de France in a hectic sprint into Île de Ré. Seb Piquet, the longtime host of Radio Tour, asked Bennett if the grandeur of his first Tour de France victory had set in, and Bennett was simply overcome by the moment.

Bennett sat, unable to speak, as the emotion washed over him.

“You dream of it and you never think it will happen. It did, and I don’t know, it took me a while before it hit me,” Bennett said. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be a crybaby.”

No apologies needed, Sam Bennett. Your emotion is a welcomed sight at this nervous and uncertain pressure cooker of a Tour de France.

Over the past 10 days we’ve watched the race unfold under the storm clouds of COVID-19 , and we have nervously twisted our hands while seeing overhead images of fans alongside the roads and crowds on the mountains . We’ve no doubt asked ourselves whether it’s been worth it to hold this Tour at all — a legitimate question that should be asked.

Amid all of this tension and nerves, Bennett’s tears of joy on an otherwise drab Tuesday morning is a reminder of the happiness and joy that this race can bring to the lives of the riders and fans watching at home.

And there’s a compelling backstory to Bennett’s tears. His emotion undoubtedly sprung from the years of disappointment and setback that Bennett weathered as he waited for his moment to shine at the Tour . Bennett is back at the Tour de France after a four-year hiatus, now at the not-so-tender age of 29, which is well past middle-aged in pro cycling’s topsy-turvy sprint ranks. For years Bennett has banged bars with the fastest sprinters, however he’s struggled to get opportunities at grand tours.

There are no guarantees in pro cycling, of course, and for several years there it seemed as though Sam Bennett might never race the Tour again. That’s a huge setback for an Irishman who grew up in the hometown of Tour legend Sean Kelly.

Why was Bennett a Tour no-show? Bennett came of age on the German pro team that in 2017 became the Bora-Hansgrohe squad of the sport’s biggest superstar, Peter Sagan. And when you’re the sprinter on Peter Sagan’s team, it’s a bit like being the backup quarterback to Tom Brady. Sure, you can hope and dream of one day playing in the Super Bowl, but in all likelihood, you will be a benchwarmer as long as you’re on the team.

Thus, Bennett watched from the sidelines as Sagan gobbled up Tour de France stage wins, year after year. Would his opportunity to win ever come at the Tour de France? He didn’t know.

Perhaps that’s why Bennett told us he “felt disposable” in today’s market for sprinters.

A steady contract is hard to secure in pro cycling, and at the end of 2019 Bennett seemed destined to stay at Bora-Hansgrohe for the coming years, even though he was continually passed over. The German team had discovered a GC threat in Emanuel Buchmann and another sprint star in Pascal Ackermann, and the two German stars jumped ahead of Bennett in the pecking order. The Tour, it seemed, might never happen.

“The thing is, you are not considered a top sprinter unless you win at the Tour,” Bennett said in late 2019. “And especially when you are negotiating a contract—without that, it is like you are not up there. That’s even though I can beat all the guys that have won stages there.”

But at the end of 2019 a lifeline opened up, as they often do, amid pro cycling’s transfer window. Elia Viviani, the star sprinter at Deceuninck–Quick-Step, left the Belgian team for a heftier paycheck at Cofidis. The move left a gaping hole in the Belgian team’s plug-and-play sprint train. Over the past few years, the team’s so-called “Wolf Pack” has acted as a kingmaker for sprinters: Mark Cavendish, Marcel Kittel, Fernando Gaviria, and Viviani.

All Bennett had to do was force his way out of Bora-Hansgrohe. He had reportedly signed a letter of intent to stay with Bora-Hansgrohe, even though he sought a new job with Deceuninck–Quick-Step. Lawyers got involved, and the case went to the UCI’s arbitration panel. In the end, Bennett was given the OK to leave, but only after months of uncertainty.

Tuesday’s stage win was confirmation that the stress, the lawyers, and the uncertainty were all worth it for Sam Bennett.

But then there was the added pressure of racing and actually winning on Deceuninck–Quick-Step. What fate would greet Bennett if he became the only sprinter to plug-in and  not win on the Belgian squad? Tuesday’s win erased such a grim reality.

“It’s a relief when there are so many great sprinters that pass through this team and delivered here. I needed this — to come to the Tour de France and deliver for this team after Deceuninck–Quick-Step and Patrick [Lefevere] gave me this amazing opportunity,” Bennett said after the stage. “I really wanted to deliver for them and also for my teammates who worked superbly for me all day. The mechanics, the soigneurs, even the press officer, the whole team, the whole wolf pack.”

Yep, it was a whirlwind of pressure, self-doubt, legal struggles, and waiting, and it produced a whirlwind of emotion inside Sam Bennett.
