Best Tourist Sim Cards in Sri Lanka in 2024

dialog sri lanka tourist sim

If you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka, having a sim card is essential. Having internet access while traveling makes navigating new cities a breeze. From finding the best restaurants to getting directions to your accommodation, booking a taxi, and sharing photos with your family, having a sim card allows you to stay connected on the go.

While roaming is an option, the fees can quickly add up when traveling internationally. Therefore, we highly recommend either getting an eSIM or a local sim card to access local phone rates.

The good news is that obtaining either an eSIM or a local sim card in Sri Lanka is incredibly convenient. In this comprehensive guide, we will provide all the information you need to know about purchasing a sim card in Sri Lanka, including updated pricing and the best sim card options available.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in sri lanka for tourists.

The best sim card in Sri Lanka is the SLT Mobile (Sri Lanka Telecom) prepaid sim cards. Their prepaid internet plans offer the best value where you can get 20GB of data valid for 30 days for 535 LKR – this is super cheap! You can also opt for a tourist plan if you prefer, however, these are significantly more expensive but still affordable compared to other countries at around 2,000 LKR.

Dialog is also great with roughly equivalent network coverage and reliability to SLT but they usually slightly more expensive plans, with their tourist sim package priced at 2,450 LKR. You really can’t go wrong with either.

Sri Lanka Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Sri Lanka costs 545 LKR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Sri Lanka will cost between $7 USD and $15 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Sri Lanka which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $15 USD.

Sri Lanka Sim Card Providers

In Sri Lanka, the main sim card providers include Mobitel, SLT (Sri Lanka Telecom), and Dialog. Mobitel, owned by SLT, is one of the leading mobile service providers in the country. It offers a range of pre-paid and post-paid packages, along with 4G and 5G services, catering to the diverse needs of its customers. SLT, on the other hand, is the national telecommunications service provider and also offers sim card services through its subsidiary, Mobitel. Dialog, a subsidiary of Axiata group, is another prominent mobile service provider in Sri Lanka. It offers a variety of plans, packages, and value-added services, ensuring seamless connectivity for its users. All three providers are known for their extensive coverage, network reliability, and competitive pricing.

How to Get a Sim Card in Sri Lanka

Identify mobile providers: Mobitel (also SLT), SLT Mobitel and Dialog are your best options in Sri Lanka.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Sri Lanka

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Sri Lanka at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Sri Lanka then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Sri Lanka have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Mobitel (also SLT), SLT Mobitel and Dialog. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Sri Lanka are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Sri Lanka with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Sri Lanka eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Sri Lanka. The Airalo Sri Lanka eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $15 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Sri Lanka without having to venture outside.

Airalo Sri Lanka

Our preferred eSim provider in Sri Lanka is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Sri Lanka and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Sri Lanka eSim uses the Dialog and Mobitel networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Dialog and Mobitel networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Sri Lanka.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Sri Lanka eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $7 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 3GB data plan for $15 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Sri Lanka

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Sri Lanka eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Sri Lanka eSim uses the Mobitel / Dialog Axiata Plc / Hutchison Telecommunications Lankanetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Sri Lanka

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Sri Lanka eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital version of a SIM card that is built directly into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. This eliminates the need for a physical card to be inserted or removed.

Instead, the eSIM is part of the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need to physically change SIM cards.

The use of eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and simplicity, especially for travelers or individuals who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel abroad. It eliminates the requirement to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, making it simpler to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code given by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device connects to the chosen mobile network, providing access to voice calls, data usage, and messaging services, just like a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several benefits to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. This is especially helpful for travelers who switch networks or use local SIM cards in different countries.

– Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on the same device, useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

– Space-saving: Embedded eSIMs eliminate the need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space within the device for smaller designs or additional components.

– Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done over the air, without a physical SIM card or store visit. Offers flexibility and convenience for managing connectivity.

– Future-proofing: As eSIM technology gains support, users can take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Dialog Sri Lanka, Best PrePaid/Tourist SIM @ Colombo Airport

Sorting out your data plan (for Netflix, YouTube, Facebook and all social media) and a SIM card to handle all your calls and messages is easy at Sri Lanka’s International Airport in Colombo. I did a ton of research in advance of a 2 week trip I took on assignment with Esquire magazine. I was travelling around from Colombo to Kandy to Yala to Weligama / Dikwella / Matara, Galle, and back up the coast to Colombo. Dialog Sri Lanka had the best coverage around the country and awesome AWESOME prices!

I went with a super custom data plan that only YouTubers would care about
but for the average “social happy” traveller who watches movies at night, makes a Skype call or two, and uses social media & video to make family and friends back home jealous
Dialog Sri Lanka has a very cool 1,299 Rupee / USD $8 4G Tourist Pack plan!

I shared an Instagram Story from a sea plane, uploaded a 10-minute (1.4GB) vlog to YouTube from a moving car during a long 4-hour transfer, and Netflix’d every night to relax. Dialog had amazing service and it was only in logical spots like on safari and in remote villages in the mountain or on stretches of rural roads where I was stuck in 3G. I 100% RECOMMEND DIALOG!!!!

Sri Lanka SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Mar 1, 2024 | Asia , SIM Cards , Sri Lanka , Travel Tips

Visiting Sri Lanka soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Sri Lanka SIM card .

Fortunately, Asia is one of the best places where you can buy a SIM card easily. You should be able to find a cheap SIM card pretty much anywhere in Asia.

In fact, most data packages are affordable, which makes the whole thing easier!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Sri Lanka in person and online.

We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Sri Lanka.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Sinhala or Tamil – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Sri Lanka .

Train in Sri Lanka

Best SIM Cards In Sri Lanka

If you’re traveling in Sri Lanka, we recommend using a SIM card from Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel, or Airalo .

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Sri Lanka

You can either buy a Sri Lanka prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival.

So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Dialog, Mobitel, and Airtel.

Sri Lanka

Dialog SIM Cards

Dialog offers one type of tourist plan, which includes:

  • LKR 1,299 ($3.54)

Mobitel SIM Cards

Mobitel also offers a prepaid tourist plan:

  • Unlimited data
  • Free international calls to your home country
  • LKR 999 ($2.72)

As you can see, it is a cheaper option than Dialog and also offers unlimited data.

Airtel SIM Cards

Airtel offers two main SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 30 GB, 30 days, LKR 749 ($2.04) – Unlimited Social Media
  • 30 GB, 30 days, LKR 515 ($1.40)

Overall, we think Mobitel is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Sri Lanka Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Sri Lanka is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid Asian SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer two data plans in Sri Lanka:

  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24.90
  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Sri Lanka or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Sri Lanka

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Sri Lanka.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs for travelers on eSIM Roamers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs for Sri Lanka.

Airalo Sri Lanka

If you want to buy an eSIM for Sri Lanka, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and regional plans for Asia and Sri Lanka.

I’ve been using Airalo for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • Mitura: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $7
  • Mitura: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $15

Sri Lanka Airalo eSIM plans

Alternatively, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 130 countries, including Sri Lanka.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 60 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 180 days for $89

Discover global esim Airalo

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Sri Lanka

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly .

You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

Here’s an overview of their plans for Sri Lanka:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $20
  • 2GB, valid for 30 days for $48
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $54

Nomad also has APAC , an eSIM plan for Asia. This plan offers coverage in Sri Lanka.

Here’s an overview:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $6
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $15
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $17
  • 10GB, valid for 30 days for $50
  • 20GB, valid for 30 days for $69

Go to Nomad

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Sri Lanka

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Sri Lanka or even an eSIM for your travels in Sri Lanka is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia eSIM .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Sri Lanka if you wish to have data upon your arrival.

This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

  • Dialog Stores : Dialog has retail stores located across major cities and towns in Sri Lanka. You can walk into any Dialog store to buy a SIM card. Some larger stores also offer SIM activation services.
  • Authorized Dealers : Look out for shops and stalls displaying the “Authorized Dialog Dealer” board. These smaller retail outlets are authorized to sell Dialog SIM cards and load credit.
  • Online : Visit dialog.lk to purchase an eSIM online if you have a compatible device. The eSIM will be delivered via email.
  • Supermarkets & Convenience Stores : Most supermarkets like Keells and Cargills and sundry shops sell Dialog prepaid SIM cards. Just check for the Dialog brand visibility.

Some key features include diversified wildlife , spectacular beaches , amazing culture , tremendous climate , and so on. However, any tourist who has a keen interest to visit Sri Lanka must definitely know about purchasing SIM cards in Sri Lanka. If not, you would be in big trouble. And above all, you must keep your kith and kin pretty close, no matter how far you physically are. Hence, we thought of providing you with a clear picture of how you must buy sim cards in Sri Lanka.

Is it Hard to Get a SIM in Sri Lanka?

Getting a SIM card in Sri Lanka is a piece of cake. There can be certain countries where getting a SIM card for you would be a pretty hard procedure. But fortunately, Sri Lanka does not belong to that category. You can easily build up connections with your home and friends from Sri Lanka very conveniently. Go ahead reading this article. No doubt, you would surely be delighted to know how simple it is.

How to Get a SIM Card in Sri Lanka?

It is fair enough for you to be very excited to know how you can get a SIM card in Sri Lanka. Let us tell you now. In fact, you would not even have to exit the Bandaranaike International Airport, the main airport in Sri Lanka in order to get a SIM card. Just after the baggage reclaims area of the airport and the money changers, there are Sri Lankan telecommunication company outlets that sell SIM cards.

All that you have to do is to hand over your passport to confirm your preference (perhaps a tourist package) It will only take about a couple of minutes for the whole procedure. The sales team of the shops will activate the SIM for you and that is it.

What if you miss the outlets at the airport? Well, you would not have to worry about that either. There are authorized dealers who sell SIM cards in almost all places in Sri Lanka. If you need to buy a SIM card from outside the airport, just keep in mind the logos of the telecommunication providers in Sri Lanka. You would be able to buy a SIM card from a place where those logos are displayed. Locals are familiar with English. So, you would not have to worry about buying a SIM card from elsewhere.

What is the Best SIM Card in Sri Lanka?

It would be great if you can have a good idea of the SIM cards that you can buy in Sri Lanka. If you have that awareness, you would not be lost. You can directly go for the best option. However, it is hard to say which is the best. There are pros and cons to each package. Hence, the best would be the package that suits you the most. This part of the article is to give you that idea. We will tell you about the packages that you can get from Mobitel, Dialog, Hutch, and Airtel, Sri Lanka’s leading telecommunication service providers.

Mobitel Tourist Plans

First, let us take a look at the Mobitel Tourist Pack . In terms of the price of Mobitel packages, Mobitel offers two packages. One is for SLR 999 and the other is for SLR 499 . According to Mobitel, you get lots of favourable offers during the first month from the time of activation of your package. You get free international calls to fixed lines and mobiles in your home country. And you get minutes if fixed and mobile line calls for any operator locally. Further, you get free data and free Wi-Fi hours to surf the internet. When you run out of the entitled free offers, you would have to top up your package and normal rates would be charged based on the destination.

When it comes to where you can buy a Mobitel SIM card, it is just like we told you even before. You can buy either from the Bandaranaike International Airport, islandwide Mobitel outlets and authorized dealers.

There are a few ways for you to top up your prepaid tourist SIM package. You can do it from any retail outlet manually or electronically. Also, you can top up online through www.mobitel.lk/myaccount . If not, you have the ability to top up via International top-up partners using your international Credit/ Debit card via PayPal on www.ezetop.com or m.ezetop.com.

And when you need to check the available balance of your SIM package, all you have to do is to dial *100# on your phone. Consequently, you will be able to see the balance as a UUD message.

Dialog Tourist Plans

Next, our focus is on the tourist packages Dialog offer . You can collect your prepaid Dialog SIM card free at the Bandaranaike International Airport, and when you top up SLR 1299 , it will be activated automatically. If you miss the shop at the Airport, you can buy a tourist plan for SLR 150 from any retail outlet and top up the same amount to activate it.

To be specific, this package includes a data quota of 10GB. 6GB of that is anytime data whereas the rest is morning boost data. (12 midnight to 8. 00 A. M.) It also includes an SLR 600 quota for international calls and SMS. The quota for local calls and SMS is SLR 350 .

If you run out of the quota, then you would have to top up your package. Do not worry. You can either purchase a recharge card or reload at a retail outlet. If not, you also have the option of reloading using VISA or AMEX if you download the Dialog Self Care App.

And when you need to check the balance of your package, you can simply dial #456# . You will be able to get to know your balance.

Hutch Tourist Plans

Hutch offers you a few tourist plans . And you have the ability to choose the one that suits you the most. Some packages give priority to data whereas others give priority to voice and messages. According to your preference, you can opt for the best option. However, you have the ability to get the SIM cards from the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Airtel Tourist Plans

Airtel also offers you packages that you can use in Sri Lanka. No difference, you can purchase the SIM cards at the Bandaranaike International Airport arrival lounge or from a retail outlet. All you have to do is hand over a properly filled application form with a passport copy to the sales team. And then, you can enjoy your stay while staying connected with your family.

Which Sizes of SIM Cards are Available in Sri Lanka?

You might have a bit of doubt whether the SIM card that you would have to purchase would be compatible with your devices. Of course, you do not have to worry about this at all. At all outlets in Sri Lanka, standard, micro, and nano-SIM cards are available. Hence, you need not have any hesitation about that.

Data Speeds

This is going to be an important concern wherever you go. In fact, you must definitely know whether the data speeds are good or not. As of Sri Lanka, there is at least 3G coverage in most parts of the country especially when it comes to Mobitel and Dialog. And there is 4G coverage usually in the suburbs.

The Bottom Line

We told you all that you need to know in order to get a SIM card in Sri Lanka as a tourist. Unarguably, you can have plenty of fun in Sri Lanka. And with the ease to get the proper connections, you can indeed maximize your joy. Enjoy your stay in Sri Lanka. Happy and Safe Travelling!

You may be excited for a tranquil beach vacation along a gorgeous stretch of golden sand. If not, you might be thrilled to experience the exhilaration and thrill of the incredible wildlife among the breathtaking scenery. Going further, you can even be anticipating learning about the splendor of the historical tales entwined with the island's customs. Similarly, your dream could be anywhere in these boundaries or outside of them. Nevertheless, we cherish your dream and pledge to turn it into a reality. Indeed, the Customized Tour Packages we provide serve as evidence that we honor our commitments.

How to buy a local SIM card in Sri Lanka as a Foreigner

How To Buy A Local SIM Card In Sri Lanka? (As A Foreigner)

Sharing is caring!

Staying connected while traveling is important, especially in the digital age. Before you plan any trip, you usually check whether the destination has good connectivity. If it’s an international trip, staying connected with your friends and family can be quite a hassle without constant wifi. So, what is the best solution for this? A local SIM card.

In this blog, we’ll be discussing Sri Lanka. Getting a local SIM card in this country is relatively easy. However, if you’re wondering how to go about it, allow us to help you. We’ll take you through the different network providers, SIM card options, the documents you need, and, most importantly, how to buy a local SIM card in Sri Lanka as a foreigner. Let’s get started.

Buying A Local SIM Card In Sri Lanka

Benefits of purchasing a sri lankan sim card.

  • The rates are relatively cheap compared to the hefty roaming charges in Sri Lanka.
  • The local network providers give good coverage nationwide, even in several remote areas.
  • Unlike the locals, you can also choose anytime data usage plans as they have separate plans for day and night. The tourist plans also include free calls or talk time with some value and SMS all over the nation.

Reliable Service Providers In Sri Lanka

Among the three major network providers, Dialog, Airtel, and SLTMobitel, we purchased a SIM card from Dialog for a month while exploring various parts of the country and faced no issues while exploring some offbeat places like Ritigala .

Dialog has the largest customer base, followed by the SLTMobitel. They provide seamless 4G and 5G internet connectivity at an excellent speed, wide network coverage, and value for money. We also discussed with locals and found that Dialog is the best service provider in the country.

Prepaid And Postpaid Plans In Sri Lanka For Tourists

Prepaid services are “pay before you use,” and Postpaid services are “use first pay later.” The postpaid services require utility bill proof valid for 6 months or a Sri Lankan bank account statement for 3 months to verify the address. Since you would have neither, as a foreigner, you can only use prepaid services. But don’t worry, even the residents prefer prepaid plans over post-paid ones. The former is cheaper and helps you avoid the shock at the end of every month.

You can choose your plan with the prepaid option, but you must pay upfront to enjoy the benefits. You can also recharge to get add-ons or even upgrade your plan. Once the plan expires, you must top-up to continue the services.

Documents Required

A passport is all you need. Suppose the passport doesn’t have your address. In that case, you need to provide proof of residence in your country, like an identity card or driver’s license, and a letter asking to accept your home country’s identity card as their address proof with your signature. At the time of purchase, you will be asked to do a digital sign confirming your purchase.

How Is The Internet Speed In Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has good network connectivity when compared to most countries. The speed is quite good in the cities, but it does vary widely in remote areas.

How Much Does It Cost?

If you purchase the SIM Card at the airport,

Disclaimer: The prices are subject to change often based on the USD. The prices given here are only for your reference.

If you buy the SIM from the airport, there are no separate charges. The cost includes the SIM card charge and the plan’s cost. If you’re purchasing from retail stores, an additional service charge of LKR 150 is levied for the SIM card.

Digital SIM Or eSIM

If there is no card slot on your mobile, you can purchase an eSIM from the SLTMobitel service provider.

Where To Get A SIM Card In Sri Lanka?

Best SIM card provider in Sri Lanka

At The Airport

The process is very easy and seamless. Just give your passport and mobile, and choose the plan that best suits your needs. The card will be activated within 5 minutes. When you give your mobile, they will open the SIM card slot, insert the card, check if the SIM is activated, and return the phone.

All three network providers have their shops at Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo. You can enquire at the airport’s information desk if you cannot locate the store.

Twin’s tip: We highly recommend you purchase a SIM card at the airport, as the prices for the same SIM and plan are twice as high in other retail stores. We walked into a retail store and were taken aback by the amount they charged.

At Exclusive Retail Outlets

There are multiple retail outlets spread across the country. They are usually found in main towns and cities. Use Google Maps to find the one closest to you.

How To Activate The SIM Card?

Once your details are verified, your SIM Card will be activated within 5 to 10 minutes of purchase. You don’t have to take any extra steps to activate your SIM. However, ensure that you leave the airport only after it is activated. Just to avoid another trip to the place.

Validity Of The SIM Card

Most tourist SIM Cards bought at the airport are typically valid for only 30 days. However, upon request, you can have the SIM validity extended to a period equal to the validity of the VISA.

Top-up/ Recharge

You can visit any retail outlet if your quota is over and you want to recharge. You can also do it online by downloading the app.

Is 5G Available In Sri Lanka?

High-speed 5G services are available, predominantly in the cities. However, in smaller towns and remote areas, the speed will depend on the strength of the network.

Roaming In Sri Lanka

There are no roaming charges within the country for a local SIM card. If you want to enjoy services from your home country’s SIM card, you have to pay the roaming fees applicable from where the SIM card was originally purchased. However, we advise you not to use your country’s SIM as the roaming charges are enormous and a sheer waste of money.

Helpful Tips

  • You can download your network provider’s app to track your current plan and data balance and recharge if your quota is over.
  • Generally, the telephone number bought in Sri Lanka starts with +94/ 0094 followed by 9 digits.
  • If you want to charge your device, know that most sockets are Type D and Type G plug types. Therefore, purchasing a universal adapter that can be used in 150+ countries, including Sri Lanka, is advisable.

First thing we have to say about internet and data connection in Sri Lanka is really good especially if we compare  with the Philippines  where we were coming from.
