Serengeti Safari - (PRIVATE TRIP)

When I first contemplated what I would experience on a safari, my thoughts went to roughing it … uncomfortable accommodations, mediocre food and long stretches of no animal sightings. Boy, was I mistaken. And I credit OneSeed for turning my expectations upside down. First of all, our guide, Saleh, was incredible. He's incredibly knowledgeable, courteous, and can spot a leopard's paw dangling from a tree from 500 yards away. I wanted just one fantastic photograph to put on my wall back home, and Saleh made sure that I got about 10. I can't say enough good things about him. Next, our accommodations were incredibly comfortable. Soft beds, luxurious blankets, and spacious quarters were waiting for us in Tarangire and Serengeti national parks and Ngornongorno Crater Conservation Area. One can never underestimate how good it feels to take a warm shower after a dusty day, and each lodge delivered. The cherry on top was falling asleep to the sounds of nearby lions and waking to the sights of giraffes and zebras parading in front of our tent camp. The food was wonderful. And we ate each morning and evening with Saleh, so we had wonderful conversations, recapped the incredible sights of the day, and planned the next day's activities. All in all, OneSeed ensured that my safari was an adventure with vivid memories that will forever fuel my imagination.

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.

When you are in Australia and you want to plan a photo safari in Africa, you want a local person to talk to. You want this person to be knowledgeable, attentive to your wishes and needs, and reactive. Frank is all that. And when you are over there, you want the people taking care of you to be professional, ready to satisfy your specific demands (I'm an amateur photographer) and friendly. My driver/guide Donath was all that. So I'm completely satisfy with this agency and I strongly recommend it.

I can only highly recommend Steppe Dogs Adventures. From the very beginning they were very professional and efficient. We were in touch via mail and any question I would ask was answered immediately. They also took care of all my suggestions and in the end we had a safari exactly like he hoped to have. My mom and I went on Safari for seven days. We had a very good car which we only shared with our lovely driver/guide/friend Godbless Marick. He was a perfect driver so we felt safe all of the time even though die to the weather it was sometimes quite hard to drive. He also knew everything about animals (especially birds) and nature as well as historical facts about the places. The lodges/ "tents" Steppe Dogs Adventures chose for us where almost more than we had expected. We felt very comfortable and could enjoy these great experiences even better. The food and drinks were also excellent there. In total it was worth every dollar and we can only highly recommend to go with them. Enjoy :)

5 Days Big Five Tanzania Camping Safari ( Tarangire, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area ) (all accommodation and transport are included)

My wife and I recently spent 9 days in Tanzania. Our trip was organized through African Travels with Spider tours and safaris. We saw so much during our time there. We visited Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Lake Manyara National parks. Our guide was Harlequin during our time and he was fantastic. Great job of positioning for viewing, pointing out birds in additional to the animals, and just being an enjoyable person throughout the trip.

What a wonderful experience for my family of five in Tanzania. Francis our guide/driver was patient, flexible and knowledgeable about Tanzania, the animals, birds and culture. The itinerary was well planned moving from one park to the next in a sort of cyclic arrangement. We sent a day in Tarangire, another in Ngorongoro Crater and four days in Serengeti. The choice of accommodation was very good. We even got an upgrade at Serengeti Safari Lodge which was great. Zara is the best

Tanzania Safari Tour Reviews

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
After a Kili climb we went on Safari. The arrangements at the lodges and the experience of our guide, Peter, made the trip memorable and unforgettable. We recommend using Oneseed for Safari and letting them take care of all of the plans from a hot air balloon ride to birthday celebration. It was a wonderful experience all the way around. We so treasure the trip and seeing the animals in their natural environment.

For starters, what makes Tanzania worthy of being on your travel bucket list ?

If you’re an animal lover hoping for lots of wildlife encounters, Tanzania is your best bet. With over 4 million animals inside its borders, Tanzania has the highest concentration of animals (per square mile) of any country on earth.

Looking for epic landscapes? Tanzania has that too. It’s home to both the world’s largest free-standing mountain–Kilimanjaro–and the world’s largest volcanic crater, Ngorongoro.

If you want unspoiled natural beauty, a Tanzania safari delivers. A full 30% of the country is made up of national parks, including 13 nature reserves and another 38 protected areas.

And when you’re finished with your safari, there’s no better place to unwind than the stunning island of Zanzibar. Located right off the coast, north of Dar es Salaam, it’s an island paradise of white sand beaches and crystal clear tropical waters.

Do we have your attention now? Good. Now that you’ve got an overview of all that Tanzania has to offer, let’s outline where to go on the best Tanzania safari tours.

The Serengeti

The Serengeti is what most people think of when they envision an African safari.

Its name comes from the Maasai language and means “endless plains,” which is the perfect description of this incredible land. The Serengeti spans over 12,000 square miles (30,000 square kilometers) in northern Tanzania and southern Kenya.

It’s home to the largest animal migration in the world, which begins in December each year. During this time, over 1 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other plains animals migrate through the area in search of greener grasslands.

While the great migration is a sight to behold, it’s far from the only wildlife viewing opportunity. The Serengeti is also home to zebras, lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas, to name just a few.

The Serengeti is also a great place to get a taste of true African culture. The park is home to both the Maasai and Swahili tribes–the only people, in fact, who are allowed to live within its borders!

Amazingly, the first European to visit the Serengeti , Oscar Baumann, didn’t do so until 1892. Because it was unknown to the outside world for so many years, it still retains its wild, “untouched” feel.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is not as famous as the Serengeti–and that’s one of the things that makes it so great. Here you’ll find incredible wildlife viewing opportunities and none of the crowds!

Why is this park included on the best Tanzania safari tours? For starters, its river is the only water source for migrating wildlife during the dry season. This alone ensures ample opportunity to get up close and personal with many different species.

The park is home to more breeding species of birds than anywhere else on earth. It’s also believed to have the largest elephant population in the world.

If those facts aren’t impressive enough, Tarangire is also your chance to see the famous tree-climbing lions. It’s a very rare phenomenon that can only be seen in a few parts of Tanzania.

Tarangire is home to more than just fauna. It also boasts an impressive variety of flora, including one of the world’s largest concentrations of baobab trees.

Arusha National Park

Preferred in most Tanzania safari itinerary with limited time, and as a get started for the other biggest park trips.

If you’re interested in seeing giraffes, look no further than Arusha National Park .

This park is smaller than the others on our list, but don’t let that fool you. It packs a powerful punch in terms of wildlife sightings and incredible topography. It’s also the easiest national park in Tanzania to get to, convenient to both Arusha and Moshi.

Arusha is home to the largest population of giraffes anywhere in the world. The park also abounds with zebra, hippos, buffalo, and elephants. Because of its compact size, it’s the ideal park to enjoy a walking or canoeing safari.

The still-active Mount Meru is Africa’s fifth-highest mountain at 14,990 feet (4,566 meters). It’s an ideal mountain for trekking, offering superb views of the plains and nearby Mount Kilimanjaro.

If you’re hoping to combine a traditional safari experience with hiking or camping, Arusha National Park is the spot for you.

Lake Manyara

Ernest Hemingway once described Lake Manyara as, “The loveliest I’ve seen in all of Africa.”

The lake itself is impressive, sometimes swelling to 77 square miles (200 square kilometers) during the wet season. Because of the intense evaporation during the region’s dry season, Lake Manyara is slightly salty.

It’s still safe for animals to drink, though, and beckons the park’s large wildlife population as a watering hole.

To be sure, this national park has plenty to offer for any safari in Tanzania. It’s another chance to see the tree-climbing lions (if you missed them in Tarangire) as well as over 400 species of birds.

The park hosts the highest concentration of elephants in the world, which almost guarantees sightings of the gentle giants. You’ll also get the chance to see baboons, mongooses, aardvarks, flamingos, and some other less-common animals.

Adrenaline junkies can get their fix here, too. Biking, rappelling, and horseback riding are common activities for visitors on safari to enjoy.

Ngorongoro Crater

Was a crater the first thing that came to your mind when you envisioned a Tanzania safari itinerary?

Probably not, but here’s why it should be.

For starters, Ngorongoro Crater is the biggest inactive, unbroken, and unfilled volcanic caldera on earth. It was formed about 2.5 million years ago when a large volcano erupted and then collapsed on itself.

The crater itself is about 2000 feet (610 meters) deep and 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) in size. Some of the world’s oldest fossils and prehistoric sites have been discovered in this area.

Because of its unique topography, it’s also home to some unique wildlife. Here you’ll find leopards, cheetahs, and warthogs, as well as the endangered black rhino and black-maned lions.

Interestingly, you won’t see any giraffes living in the crater. Experts believe the sides of the crater are too steep for them to descend!

Giraffes or no giraffes, this crater is often referred to as “the Garden of Eden” for its incredible natural beauty.

Fun Add-Ons

Of course, seeking out wildlife is one of the main draws of any Tanzania safari itinerary.

But what if you have a few days at the end of your holiday? What else does Tanzania have to offer?

Plenty! Here are just a few ideas for places and activities to add to your safari in Tanzania.

After days or weeks of exploring national parks, what better way to unwind than on an idyllic tropical island ?

Surrounded by coral reefs and stunningly blue waters, you have to see Zanzibar believe it. Spend a few days lounging on a white sand beach, snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, and eating your fill of delicious coconut crab.

Mount Kilimanjaro

If you’re more of an adrenaline junkie than a beach bum, head north to the famed peak of Mount Kilimanjaro .

The world’s tallest free-standing mountain beckons thousands of trekkers every year to ascend its mighty peak. At 19,341 feet (5,895 meters), this 5-9 day trek is not for the faint of heart.

If you’re up for the challenge, though, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll treasure forever.

Lake Victoria

If you want to get away from it all and enjoy some peaceful fishing or birdwatching, add Lake Victoria to your Tanzania safari itinerary.

The largest lake in all of Africa, it’s the perfect spot to cast a line for giant tilapia or Nile perch. In the center of the lake, Robundo Island offers great wildlife viewing opportunities and a chance to escape the crowds.

Safari tours

A safari tour package in Tanzania is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip.

Spread across the country including Zanzibar tour packages, Tanzania’s parks and reserves can take several hours/flight to one another.

It is important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Tanzania tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include ( Tanzania hot air balloon , hiking)

Guided tour

A guided safari package brings the benefit of:

  • Transfer via plane/4×4 to the safari camps and lodges
  • Luxury lodge packages
  • Meals/drinks all catered for
  • Safari guides and transport
  • Facilities prepared including showers, wifi, cocktails and all requests
  • Combined trips to neighbouring Kenya and beach trips to Zanzibar
  • Tailored trips including chimp trekking tours

Self drive safari

For self-drive African safaris, visitors can hire their own 4×4, whilst accommodation can be secured in park campsites or in the vehicle itself if a campervan option is selected.

Part of the fun of a self drive safari is spotting the abundant wildlife on your own and taking the time to spend viewing your favourite animals.

A normal 2 wheel drive car may be sufficient, and cheaper. Other parks however will have deeper sand and a 4×4 will be required.

Best time to go on a safari in Tanzania

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know when to travel to Tanzania, visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

Overall, June to October is the best time to visit during the dry season.

Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flights, transfers, meal options and additional activities and things to do in Tanzania including walking safaris which visitors may request.

Newlyweds may also indulge on a Tanzania honeymoon safari with extra pampering and luxury safaris to ensure they’re feeling the love, which can add to the overall price.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and activities as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Visitors can review further details on overall Tanzania safari prices here .

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your safari in Tanzania including:

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget. This option requires time and know-how to plan for all flights, transport, meals, accommodation and safari tours.

Without the knowledge of specific safari destinations and logistics in navigating an African country, this may be a challenging option for many travelers.

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Tailor-made tours including 6 day tours
  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Entry  .

A tourist visa is required to enter Tanzania including U.S, U.K, Canada and EU citizens. International flights arrive via Dar es Salaam (DAR) airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for visitors wondering how to get to Tanzania .

DAR airport is located 18km south of Dar Es Salaam and a Tanzania visa will most likely be required to enter the country. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

It is also possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of their return journey.

A visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months with at least one free blank page.

Health

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Tanzania: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Yellow fever is required if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country.

Tanzania is in a high risk malaria area throughout the country except in high altitude mountains over 2000m including the Ngorongoro Crater rim, Mount Kilimanjaro and parts of the Eastern Arc Mountains.

Most safari parks are high-risk zones. The highest risk of transition is in the rainy season from November to May.

Check with a travel medicine specialist to see if antimalarials should be considered to help prevent malaria contraction. Visitors can find further information on Tanzania vaccine requirements here .

In September 2022, the government introduced new regulations that applies to all passengers. Travelers who have received all of their vaccinations are not required to undergo any tests. Upon arrival, travelers are required to provide a current vaccination certificate that includes a QR code.

Before departure, all foreign travelers entering Tanzania must complete an online Health Surveillance Form . International travelers entering Tanzania from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are required to submit an online Health Surveillance Form .

Driving in Tanzania

Driving is conducted on the left hand side of the road in Tanzania and driving is generally considered to be safe.

Visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Insurance

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

Visitors can expect to pay between $800 to $1,100 per person per day.

Five of the Best Safari Itineraries in Tanzania

tanzania for safari

 Michal Venera/ Getty Images

One of the  best safari destinations  on the African continent, Tanzania is home to a slew of world-famous game reserves — including the iconic Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area . In particular, it is known for the Great Migration, an annual event that sees vast herds of wildebeest and zebra travel between their ancestral grazing and mating grounds in Tanzania and Kenya.

A Tanzanian safari ranks highly on many people's bucket list. However, there are countless different operators to choose from and itineraries are notoriously pricey. Before forking out thousands of dollars for your trip of a lifetime, it’s essential to make sure that you’ve chosen the best possible trip for you. We've rounded up our pick of the most rewarding itineraries for five different types of traveler.

For Luxury Travelers: Deluxe Safari and Beach, Imagine Travel

This 11-night itinerary from luxury travel company Imagine Travel is the ideal option for those with unlimited cash to spend. It offers the best of both worlds — the rugged beauty of Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations and the tropical luxury of the beach. Accommodation is provided by a series of exclusive camps and lodges, all owned by socially and environmentally-conscious brand Asilia Africa .

After flying into Kilimanjaro , you’ll be greeted by your private guide and taken directly to Tarangire National Park . Part of the country’s famed Northern Circuit, Tarangire is less crowded than its better-known neighbors, offering excellent game-viewing and a fabulous sense of exclusivity. You’ll spend your time here at Oliver’s Camp , where 10 luxury safari tents offer every conceivable modern comfort, from antique decor to en-suite bathrooms with hot water and flushing toilets.

The itinerary also takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. At Ngorongoro you will stay in the contemporary glass-and-canvas domes of The Highlands . This intimate camp is set on the slopes of the Olmoti volcano and combines breathtaking views of the Ngorongoro Crater with sublime in-house dining. In the Serengeti, you can add to the luxury experience with an optional hot-air balloon safari.

The second half of the trip is spent in the Zanzibar Archipelago , at 5-star Matemwe Lodge. Expect laid-back indulgence in one of 12 beach chalets, each of which overlook a coral-filled lagoon. All chalets include a deep-soaking tub and a private verandah with soothing sea views. Spend your days in the spa, cruising on a traditional dhow or scuba diving off nearby Mnemba Atoll.

For Families: Family Wildlife and Wilderness Safari, Africa Adventure Company

Family safaris offer a unique opportunity to introduce your children to the wonders of the African bush — but they do require special planning. Many lodges have age restrictions, and some ban children from game drives altogether. This itinerary by The Africa Adventure Company , however, is especially geared towards parents traveling with teenagers and young children. The tour is private, allowing you to customize your itinerary according to special requirements and individual interests, while the included activities are designed to delight younger travelers.

The trip lasts for 14 days, and focuses on the parks of the Northern Circuit. In Tarangire National Park, scenic game drives can be enjoyed alongside nature walks with local Maasai guides or trips to rural schools. Experiences like these offer your children an invaluable insight into other cultures as well as the chance to interact with Tanzanians of their own age, perhaps by joining in a lesson or by playing a game of soccer. At Lake Eyasi, spend time with indigenous bushmen, learning how to gather plants and craft traditional weapons and jewelry.

Other highlights include the unparalleled game viewing of Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti; and Olduvai Gorge , an anthropological site famous for the discovery of early humanoid fossils. In each location, lodges and camps are selected especially for their family-friendly outlook. Value and Classic accommodation options allow you to tailor your trip to suit your budget. Regardless of which price bracket you choose, there are significant discounts for children — making the thought of budgeting for a family vacation to Tanzania slightly less intimidating.

For Couples: Romantic East Africa Safari, &Beyond

This romance-filled itinerary by luxury travel company &Beyond is tailor-made for honeymooning couples. It could also set the scene for your dream proposal , or make a special anniversary unforgettable. The private tour, which lasts 11 days, starts with a scheduled flight from Kilimanjaro to remote Manyara Airstrip. From there, an open 4x4 safari vehicle takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, where awe-inspiring habitats range from secret woodlands to soda lakes dotted with flamingoes.

Spend your time at the park looking for its famous tree-climbing lions. Later, fall asleep amidst the mahogany trees in an atmospheric stilted treehouse at &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge . Unique experiences are the trademark of this itinerary. In the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, share a gourmet picnic with your loved one on the crater floor, surrounded by wildlife and waited upon by immaculate butlers. In the Serengeti, stay under canvas and experience the incredible romance of a dawn hot-air balloon safari.

Of course, nothing says "I love you" like a few days of decadence on an idyllic shore — which is where &Beyond Mnemba Island lodge comes in. Transfer via plane and boat to this picture-perfect spot in the Zanzibar Archipelago to try your hand at scuba diving, snorkeling or fly-fishing. Alternatively, you can relax in your beachfront banda or sign-up for a massage overlooking the ocean. Many of your meals are served al fresco, in the form of beach picnics or candlelit dinners at the water’s edge.

For Explorers: Get Out of Town, Nomad Tanzania

Feeling the need to sign out of real life for a week?  This itinerary from veteran travel company Nomad Tanzania is your key to escaping the rat race. Designed as an antidote to the pressures of modern life, it focuses on two remote areas in southern Tanzania, both of them far removed from WiFi and cell phone reception. Say goodbye to your work colleagues, abandon your social media accounts and rediscover your inner peace with a visit to the country’s least-visited wildernesses.

Your seven-night trip begins at Ruaha National Park. It is the largest national park in Tanzania, and also one of the least accessible. Its remoteness means that it is less crowded than the more famous parks of the north; but the wildlife sightings are just as rewarding. In particular, the park is known for its big cats, boasting the second-largest lion population in Africa . You’ll stay at Nomad Tanzania’s Kigelia Ruaha Camp , which comprises just six luxury tents nestled amidst a grove of sausage trees.

The second half of the itinerary takes you to the world-renowned Selous Game Reserve. The rustic cottages of Sand Rivers Selous camp provide inspiring views of the Rufiji River, which is the ideal location for relaxing river safaris. The best way to explore this largely untouched area, however, is on foot. Walking safaris are a key attraction at Sand Rivers Selous, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in nature's splendor.

For a true taste of life in the wilderness, spend a night fly-camping in a temporary camp. Surrounded by virgin bush and lit by the flicker of the nearby campfire, these netted tents afford bedtime views of the stars, spangled in vivid constellations across the African sky. This itinerary is offered from June to mid-March.

For Photographers: Tanzania Migration Photo Safari, Natural Habitat Adventures

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional behind the lens, this itinerary is a must for keen wildlife photographers. It centers around the Great Migration , a magnificent spectacle of life and death involving hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra (and the predators that follow in their wake). The time and location of the migration changes every year, and is therefore hard to predict. For this reason, the tour focuses on two different areas of the Serengeti to maximize your chance of being in the right place at the right time.

You’ll be based first in the Namiri Plains, a remote private concession in the east-central Serengeti that has only recently become accessible to visitors. Very few tourists travel to the Plains - which means that you won’t have to worry about hordes of safari vehicles ruining the authenticity of your photographs. The area is also known for its high predator density, giving you the best possible chance of capturing the drama of a kill on camera. You can explore on foot, or in a traditional safari vehicle. The second half of the trip takes you to the company's Migration Base Camp in the southern Serengeti.

Natural Habitat Adventures limits group sizes for this itinerary to just nine people, with a maximum of four guests per vehicle. This means that there’s plenty of space in the jeep for your camera equipment, while a window seat with an unimpeded view is guaranteed. Best of all, the nine-day trip is guided by a professional naturalist and accomplished photographer, with the knowledge needed to advise you on how to get the best shots .

Tanzania Safari Tips For Travellers. 11 Things To Know And Prepare For!

by Gary Bembridge · July 6, 2017

My Tips for a Safari In Tanzania: Things To Know And Prepare For

Heading to Tanzania on safari is one of my favourite all-time travel experiences. I had been on safaris in South Africa and Zimbabwe but this was even more magical, enthralling and I saw more animals than I had imagined I would. It exceeded all expectations on so many levels when I travelled there I travelled with Titan Travel on a 9-night “Wild Plains of Tanzania ” trip. In this article I share 11 tips and advice on how to prepare for and get the most of a safari to Tanzania based on my experience.

tanzania for safari

#1: Best Time To Go

While much of the year is suitable there are some key times you should plan to go to get the best experience, and see animals easier. Experts recommend visiting in the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this time the animals are easier to find and see as they have to concentrate around waterholes and rivers, and there is less vegetation for them to hide in. There are fewer mosquitoes at this time of the year, because there is almost no rain. Skies are clear and most days are sunny.

It gets very busy in June and July, when the huge mass migration activity peaks in the Serengeti. However, with millions of animals on the move many travellers still want to still go there to experience it. But availability will be tighter and prices higher.

I travelled in late May into early June, and we had overall good weather and incredible sightings of animals – including the “Big Five”.

#2: Choose right Safari Tour Company

There are many operators and options available to do a safari in Tanzania with. To get the most I recommend you first draw up a list of your key requirements. So mine included (1) hitting the famous parks, (2) ensuring the greatest chance of seeing the “Big Five”, (3) staying in fairly luxurious lodges, (4) travelling with an expert local guide, (5) in as small a group as possible, (6) with fellow travellers of my age range and finally of course (6) within a reasonable budget.

I travelled with Titan Travel on their 9-night “ Wild Plains of Tanzania ” safari. We flew on KLM to Kilimanjaro Airport via Amsterdam Schiphol in a small tour group of just 9 people. We were split across two 4×4 trucks, with five people in one and four in another. The maximum each could have held was six. The tour was hosted by a local tour leader and two drivers and took in the must-see parks of Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Crater, Serengeti National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. This ensured we saw the “Big Five” (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino) along with tens of thousands of other animals including zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, cheetah and ostrich. We stayed in luxurious lodges and everyone was in my age group or older.

When planning your trip you should know there are three international airports:

  • Dar es Salaam is used by most international airlines, and is more convenient for business travellers or those exploring the southern safari circuit.
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), which is close to Arusha and is the handiest for safaris to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara parks.
  • Some international flights land at Zanzibar .

tanzania for safari

You probably will need one. These can be obtained in advance in your home country or at the airport on arrival. The line of people buying their visa on arrival can be long and so I recommend getting one before you travel.

To check if you will need a visa visit your local Tanzanian Embassy site or check using the Travvisa.com site at

https://www.travisa.com/Visa_Search There are some key requirements when applying for a Tanzanian visa:

  • Passport must have at least three consecutive blank visa pages.
  • Be valid for six months beyond entry date.
  • Two (2) passport size photos taken on a white background within the last six months.

If travelling from the UK, like I was, I had the option of getting a visa from the embassy in London ( http://tanzaniahighcomm.co.uk ) in person or by post, or by using a service like CIBT Visas http://www.cibtvisas.co.uk/ . I went into the embassy and got mine the same day within just a few hours.

#4: Malaria tablets and any inoculations.

Tanzania is a malaria area and you need to take anti-malaria medication. You must arrange this before you travel, as you need to start taking them before you arrive.

The medication requires a prescription in most countries. This can often be obtained from a Travel Clinic run by some large Travel Agents or Pharmacy Chains, so you may not need to visit your doctor. However, if you are on other medication you should check with them on any potential interactions as the type of pills prescribed need to take this into account.

Travelling out of the UK I was able to use an online review and prescription service offered by Boots Travel, who then delivered the pills to my home.

You may also need some other inoculations based on where you are travelling from or have been recently. For example, Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are travelling from yellow fever endemic countries/regions.

Some sites to check on the recommended inoculations and requirements that I found helpful in planning were:

  • NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre): http://nathnac.net
  • NHS FitForTravel website: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk

  #5: Travel Insurance

It is essential to take out comprehensive travel insurance, especially for medical issues. Many of the tour operators will insist on this when taking your booking. Your policy should include coverage for air evacuation to a hospital and back home if required. If you are injured, or have a serious medical incident, you will need to be evacuated from the park or lodge to a main centre, or even out to a neighbouring country like Kenya, mostly likely by plane.

A relatively inexpensive option, if your policy does not cover evacuation, is to take out an evacuation policy with Flying Doctors. They provide air evacuation by bush plane out of the wilds of Tanzania to Nairobi, Kenya. More details at http://flydoc.org

#6: Luggage requirements

Take the smallest possible case you can. Think small and then go even smaller! It is also essential it is a soft case, so ideally a duffel / holdall / carryall.

If you are flying between lodges there will be strict limits on the size and shape of your luggage to ensure it fits in the small planes. The airline may also specify that the bags cannot have wheels on them either. So double check your travel documents carefully. If you are returning to the same airport at the start and end of your safari many of the providers will let you store excess bags or clothes in a lock up, but it is best to stick to the limitations.

If you are on land trip only there is also very limited space for bags in the back of the 4×4 trucks that you will be travelling in. You should have a small and soft bag for this as well, or they will struggle to fit them all in. It is easier to carry to and from the different rooms in the varied lodges you are likely to be staying in as you travel between different parks too. I travelled with a bag double the size of the more experienced safari travellers and regretted it. Luckily they could fit it in as everyone else was travelling light. It is a mistake I will not make again!

tanzania for safari

#7: Packing Essentials

Following on from the need to have a small bag, you need to be ruthless when packing -and you must pack light!

In addition to taking a camera (of course!), here are my recommendations on what to take:

  • Take as few clothes as possible. You will not have to dress up in the evenings. Everyone will be casual. The clothes should be as breathable as possible, so cotton is good, and ideally quick drying if you do need to rinse them out.
  • It will be dusty on safari and you want to blend in. So have neutral colours (green, tan and brown) and I recommend bringing one change of shirt for every day and have one or two long-sleeved shirts that you use for the evening (these protect you better from mosquitos which tend to come out at this time).
  • Shorts and a T-shirt are fine for safari. You should though have at least one pair of long trousers for the evening to protect against mosquitos.
  • Bring layers, like a sweatshirt or jacket, as it can get chilly early morning or evenings on game drives.
  • Bring a waterproof jacket. I brought one that could be crumpled up and took up very little room. It also provided an extra layer when it was chilly.
  • Although many lodges have same day laundry service as you are likely moving about assume you will not use it, so bring a change of underwear for every day.
  • Bring a pair of good walking shoes / boots and one pair of more casual shoes, such as flip-flops or sandals for evenings in the lodge.
  • Bring swimwear as most lodges will have a pool and a refreshing swim after a day out on safari can be very welcome in the hot season.
  • Do not bring camouflage pattern clothes.
  • Anti-mosquito
  • Personal First Aid Kit with a supply of your favourite medications like headache pills, anti-diarrheal, plasters and a tooth repair kit (for quick fixes as a dentist will be hard to find!)
  • Binoculars are a nice plus!
  • Torch as the area is prone to power cuts. Though if you have a SmartPhone this will be able to double as a torch.
  • Alarm clock or phone (to wake up for morning drives!).
  • The sockets take UK style three-pin plugs, so bring an adaptor if you not from UK. It is best to use a travel adapter with a ‘surge protector’ to protect your equipment, although I found most of the lodges had extension cords with multiple plug sockets that were surge protected.

Things to leave behind:

  • Your laptop! It is extra weight, could get damaged in small bags and with the bumping around on dirt roads. The Wi-Fi in the lodges and parks is erratic and in some there is none. You will also have limited time to use it. Your SmartPhone or Tablet is probably enough if you have one.

tanzania for safari

#8: Currency and money

The best currency to take is US Dollars. They are accepted virtually everywhere and save having unwanted local currency at the end of the trip. You should bring small bills and they need to be in good condition and as new as possible. Locals and stores will not take torn or notes in poor condition.

Tipping is quite common and expected. So plan to tip the lodge staff if they help you with your bags. The guide should be tipped up to US $ 20 to US $ 30 per group per day. I gave the driver and guide $50 each for the 9 days I was with them.

tanzania for safari

#9: Photography: If want to take pictures come prepared

Before getting into the technical side, there are three key things you need to know and be aware of:

  • Always ask locals before taking their pictures, especially the Maasai. Many will expect some tip if you take their photo, and could even be quite aggressive if you take it without approval or paying.
  • Many parks in parts of Africa are starting to ban the use of SmartPhones and Tablets for picture taking. This is because the pictures have GPS location data imbedded and if posted live, or close to live, on social media can provide poachers with valuable information. Check before you go if Tanzania has introduced any limits. At the time of writing this guide they did not have any restrictions.
  • Do not bring a drone unless you have a permit before coming. They were not allowed in the parks when I travelled as the authorities are considering, and studying, the impact on animals and there is a real concern that poachers may use them, hence the blanket ban.

To take great pictures of animals on safari you really need a camera with a good zoom lens. This needs to be at least 300mm. This is what I used to take my photographs. You can view them at https://tipsfortravellers.smugmug.com/Tanzania/

Some tips I have for your photography are:

  • Get close through using a zoom lens or crop pictures afterwards using editing software. The former is better to ensure good quality.
  • If you have a DSLR, consider hiring a zoom lens rather than buying one, as they can be pricey to purchase. There are sites in the UK like http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ and in USA like https://www.lensrentals.com  and https://www.borrowlenses.com
  • Focus on the eyes when taking pictures. Take multiple shots and try and get one with the animal looking directly into the lens.
  • Take lots of charged batteries. You may not be always be able to charge properly in lodges or camps so whenever you can charge them up.
  • Take lots of SD cards.
  • Bring a beanbag to rest your lens on. The zoom lens can be heavy and shooting animals at distance can lead to camera shake and out of focus pictures. The beanbag can be quickly thrown on the side of the truck and is very versatile. Do not bring tripods, as there will be no room to store them.
  • Switch off the flash.
  • Don’t spend all time behind a lens! Make sure you enjoy seeing the animals live and not just through a lens.

tanzania for safari

  #10: Staying connected

You should let your friends and family know that you will be out of contact for much of the time you are way. The mobile signal will be patchy or non-existent and roaming charges are very high (around $3 or £2 a minute to receive and make calls to and from Tanzania). I did take one of those roaming devices with me but this proved largely useless as they rely on the mobile phone signal. So I do not recommend these.

I did have some success occasionally using FaceTime audio across the Wi-Fi in some lodges, but it was inconsistent and erratic.

You should let your family and friends have your itinerary and the landline numbers of the lodges you will be staying at as well as the safari operator numbers. They can then use these if there is any emergency and need to contact you.

tanzania for safari

#11: Know what to expect and be prepared

Although it is very rewarding and you will see a lot in Tanzania, going on a safari there can be tiring. To make the most of the potential to view animals the days are long with lots of time in the truck out sightseeing or moving between parks and lodges. There will also be a number of early starts. On average we spent about six hours a day in the van. It can be tiring and so naps in between and early to bed is recommend.

Unlike safari vans in places like South Africa, the vans will not be open. The roof will be raised up so you can stand up to view and take pictures of the animals.

Here are some things to expect and be ready for:

  • Expect crowds and a number of vans when you spot animals, especially the harder to find beasts like lions, leopards and cheetah. The parks request no more than five vans when animals are spotted but not all stick to this.
  • English is widely spoken but a few words of Swahili will always be appreciated.
  • Only drink bottled water, including for brushing teeth. This will be provided in your room.
  • In many lodges after sunset you will be escorted to and from your room for dinner in the main lodge building, to avoid any unpleasant or unexpected encounters with animals.
  • Most meals will be buffet style.
  • When heading out on a game drive in addition to wearing neutral coloured clothing, avoid strongly scented deodorant and perfumes.
  • Take along tissues and a plastic bag in case you are “caught short” and your guide cannot take you to toilet facilities in the park and you have to go behind the van to “check the tyres” (the polite expression for having to do your business!)

Final Thought

I loved my safari in Tanzania. The people were welcoming and friendly, the wildlife abundant and impressive and the lodges of great quality. It is definitely one of my favourite trips of all time. I hope these tips help, and I wish I had been given them before I went. If you have any to add please leave a comment to help other travellers.

Lions prowl across dusty savannah. Elephants gather at raucous waterholes. Wildebeest hoofs create a drum roll as herds cross the Serengeti. This is a Tanzania safari , a true immersion in wildlife and wilderness.

There are more wild land mammals in this country than anywhere else on the planet. There are almost a dozen different safari destinations and the complete suite of wildlife, with so much more than the big five.

Most preconceptions about an African safari can be realised in Tanzania. This is the country where you get closer, see more, and experience the wild at its untamed best .

But Tanzania is an enormous country and wild animals don’t live everywhere. In this detailed guide we’ll show you the places to go , things to see , experiences to try , places to stay and when to go ; along with tips for planning your first time in the country.

Tanzania Safaris – Essential Information

tanzania for safari

Where is Tanzania and how do I get there?

Tanzania is a large country in East Africa, immediately south of Kenya . Dar es Salaam is the largest international airport but for most safaris it’s more convenient to use Kilimanjaro International Airport to the north.

Why are Tanzania safaris so famous?

The great wildebeest migration is in Tanzania for nine months of the year, in the most famous African destination of all – the Serengeti .

One glance at the Serengeti and you’ll immediately see this was the landscape that inspired Disney’s Lion King .

Tanzania is also home to Ngorongoro Crater and almost a dozen other national parks, all with their own wildlife specialisms.

What animals will I see on a Tanzanian safari?

tanzania for safari

Lions , leopards , rhinos , elephants , giraffe , buffalo , wildebeest , zebra , Thomson’s gazelle …the list goes on and on, with Tanzania home to a stunning diversity of life.

Most impressive is the abundance . On a multi-day safari you don’t encounter a single lion but many different prides. Sometimes you’re confronted by herds of zebra numbering over 5000 individuals.

And none of the animals are seen in isolation. The beauty of an African safari is watching how everything interacts , especially at a waterhole or the battle between predator and prey.

How long do I need for a Tanzania safari?

This is not a one-day experience. Realistically you need at least four days . A week on safari is recommended as it allows you to visit different parks and really explore the wilderness.

What does a Tanzania safari cost?

A safari here is a once in a lifetime experience and it doesn’t come cheap . But can you put a price on watching lions prowl around tens of thousands of wildebeest?

You’ll need a permit for each park that’s visited , which ranges from USD 30 – 100 per day . Accommodation in basic camps starts at USD 50 per night per person, going upwards of USD 1000 per night.

While it is possible to rent a car and do your own safari, this really isn’t recommended and also attracts substantial fees. Almost everyone books a tour , so you must calculate the price of a sturdy four-wheel drive Toyota Landcruiser, a driver-guide or driver plus guide, then your meals and drinks.

The most basic multi-day safaris start at USD 180 per day per person. USD 300 – 400 per day is more realistic for using an experienced tour operator and clean, comfortable camps. At the top end a safari could cost you more than USD 2000 per day.

Why Tanzania and not Kenya or South Africa?

tanzania for safari

In Tanzania you explore with all the senses . Hippos grunting as they emerge from a lake. The smell of fear as you watch a leopard stalk a gazelle herd. Lions roaring, elephants hooting, buffalo charging and zebra grazing besides your tent.

Tanzania isn’t the only country in Africa where you can go on safari. However, it is the one that most reflects preconceptions about an authentic safari .

The scale – Tanzania’s parks are huge; as an example, the Serengeti ecosystem is roughly the size of Belgium and one of the country’s largest reserves. Such a scale stops anywhere from feeling too crowded.

The animal abundance – no other African country has as many wild animals.

Getting closer – with so many animals it’s very easy to get close; it’s common for lions to rest in the shade created by your safari vehicle.

Pure wildlife theatre – nothing is seen in isolation and on a multi-day safari you become centre stage in it all.

Diversity – on a multi-day safari you’ll explore a myriad of habitats and ecosystems, each with its own atmosphere and wildlife cast.

Unique safari experiences only found in Tanzania

  • Follow the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti plains; or witness the calving season from January to March.
  • Find Africa’s ultimate Eden with a morning game drive in Ngorongoro Crater , where all the big five can be spotted at once.
  • Spot hundreds of elephants and baobab trees in Tarangire .
  • Search for rare tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara National Park .
  • Go on thrilling walking safaris in Selous Game Reserve .

Safari experiences that are commonplace in Tanzania

  • Utilise light aircraft to land on dusty wilderness airstrips, deep within national parks .
  • Camp in the wild and wake up to zebra and buffalo grazing around your tent.
  • Track large lion prides on a hunt , or even a leopard or cheetah stalking its prey.
  • Be surrounded by elephants or giraffe.
  • Cross vast open landscapes that seem to have no end.
  • Watch hyenas and African vultures fighting over a fresh kill , or hear the crack of carnivorous teeth ripping through bone.
  • The safari never stops – you don’t just do a game drive or walk, you live the wildlife experience for 24 hours a day.

When to Visit Tanzania for Safari

tanzania for safari

Tanzania is marked by wet and dry seasons and there is no best time to go on safari . Different times of year are better for different destinations, while the spread of tourism numbers across the year means that nowhere gets uncomfortably crowded.

January to February – Wildebeest calving

  • This is the hottest and driest time of the year in Tanzania.
  • The Great Migration is at the most accessible south-eastern part of the Serengeti, and the wildebeest are calving on the plains. This is a great time to visit the Serengeti and see predators on a hunt.
  • The warm dry weather makes wildlife spotting easy in all of Tanzania’s parks.

March to May – The long rains

  • The main rainy season lasts for three months and tropical downpours occur on most days.
  • Many safari lodges close and these months are low season in Tanzania.

June – August – Cool, dry, popular, and great for wildlife viewing

  • The long dry season is the most popular time to visit Tanzania . That’s partly because it has the most agreeable weather.
  • Wildlife viewing is good although the Great Migration will probably be in Kenya at this time of year.
  • The popularity of these months mean that Northern Tanzania’s destination can get crowded . However, the southern parks are never crowded , whatever month of the year.

September – late October – End of the dry season

  • As the dry season continues wildlife must come to the waterholes to drink , making animal spotting very easy.
  • Even though wildlife viewing is superb this is an unpopular time, so lodges and safaris are cheaper .

Late October – December – The short rains

  • Short afternoon showers are common at this time of year although they’re not as heavy as in March to May.
  • Wildlife viewing is still generally good, although the abundance of water means that game is widely scattered and harder to find .

Where to Safari in Tanzania

tanzania for safari

This article provides a more detailed guide to the best safari destinations in Tanzania . These are your options:

Northern Tanzania

Open plains and epic savannah make Northern Tanzania a refuge for millions of wild mammals. This is the most popular region to explore . Just fly in and out of Kilimanjaro International Airport then set off on a five to eight-day overland safari.

You can use local flights to access the Serengeti directly, bypassing the other parks. This is a good option for a Tanzania and Kenya safari, or if you only have three to four days in the country.

The Serengeti – These endless grass plains are home to the great wildebeest migration. It’s the most unmissable destination in Tanzania and you really need three days to explore different areas of the park.

To the west of the national park, Grumeti Game Reserve offers exclusive and expensive experiences, particularly with the wildebeest migration.

Ngorongoro Crater – The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera is home to some 30,000 wild mammals including the full big five . For the best experience visit on a sunrise game drive, just as the gate opens. One morning is ample time.

Tarangire – The wild home of elephants and baobabs, along with a superb diversity of other mammals. A good introduction to the safari experience with some intense pachyderm encounters. 24 to 48 hours is recommended.

Lake Manyara – Tanzania’s most beautiful park, with tree-climbing lions, lots of hippos, all manner of antelope species and the world’s largest baboon population. Unlike other destinations, Manyara is as good during the day as at early morning or late afternoon. One day is all you need.

These four destinations are contiguous and easily combined on the Northern Circuit safari route. This can be done over five days but it’s worth making that a week – Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, then two to three days in the Serengeti.

This is Africa’s most famous multi-day safari circuit. It’s also the best option for a budget Tanzania safari as you won’t need expensive internal flights.

Also in the north of the country is Arusha National Park . This could be a one-day safari option if you don’t have time for elsewhere, for example if you’re visiting Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro. However, it’s not worth adding Arusha National Park onto a longer itinerary – the other parks are so much better.

Southern Tanzania

tanzania for safari

Southern Tanzania is untouched and under-visited, a vast space of raw and redolent wildlife scenes . If you want to see nature truly untamed then this is where to come. Expect a real off-road adventure.

An overland safari through Southern Tanzania will require eight to ten days if you depart from Dar es Salaam . Local flights land at all these destinations and are recommended if your budget allows. These flights also provide a connection between Ruaha and Selous with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Mikumi National Park – Green floodplains and large populations of wildebeest and zebra make Mikumi feel like the Serengeti in miniature form. It’s a good standalone destination if you’re short on time but avoid the weekends, when the park gets busy with day-trippers from nearby Dar es Salaam.

Ruaha National Park – One of Africa’s best hidden gems, this enormous park is packed full of scenes of predators meeting prey, along with Tanzania’s largest wild dog and elephant populations.

There’s over 20,000 square kilometres of untouched savannah and only a few visitors. Most game viewing takes place around the Ruaha River and you can mix game drives with walks. Allow at least three days.

Selous Game Reserve – Offering a superb variety of safari activities, this vast reserve (over 50,000 square kilometres!) is home to almost all of Africa’s great mammals.

Take a boat along the Rufiji River , walk in lion country, game drive to wild scenes, and see everything from giraffe to leopard around the camps. 48 hours is ideal.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park – Halfway between Mikumi and Ruaha, this woodland park provides an excellent contrast to Southern Tanzania’s savannah.

Go walking on narrow trails in search of 400 different birds and six species of monkey, including the endemic Iringa red colobus monkey and sanje crested mangabey .

Western Tanzania

tanzania for safari

Dominated by forest and wild plains, Western Tanzania provides off the beaten track experiences in three very different parks . These destinations are difficult to get to without internal flights, but very rewarding, especially for anyone who has been on a safari before.

Gombe National Park – Best known for its chimpanzee safaris, this remote western park contrasts the safari experience you get on the savannah. Come to see lots of primates in lush, tangled forest.

Katavi National Park – Thousand-strong buffalo herds and plentiful hippos make this grassland savannah a stunning little destination. Katavi is vastly underrated and you may be the only visitors amid a great abundance of wildlife.

Mahale Mountains National Park – Trekking to habituated chimpanzee troops is the major experience here, at a park that’s hard to reach and wild beyond words.

Where to Stay on a Tanzanian Safari

tanzania for safari

Where you stay is part of the experience. Through the night you hear the sound of elephants . Around camps and lodges you spot animals grazing. The safari never stops as you look out across plains or waterholes.

Location, location, location

Almost everywhere you can stay is deep within nature. So forget some of your modern luxuries. The experience is about wildlife and wilderness, and you’ll connect with your wild side by having canvas as walls, rather than dedicated Wi-Fi or plush bathrooms.

Your tour operator will suggest accommodation and these choices have a big impact on the total safari cost. Look first and foremost at location .

Camps within national parks are the best but are more expensive. Those around a park’s boundaries are in buffer wildlife zones and will be much cheaper, while still connecting you with wildlife.

Be wary of safari itineraries that use camps or lodges in towns , or anywhere more than a few miles from a national park gate.

For example, budget operators will try to use cheap camps in the dusty, rundown town of Karatu , where there’s traffic rather than wildlife, even though Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara are both only 30 kilometres away.

Types of safari accommodation

All the national parks have dedicated camping sites within their boundaries. These can be used if you’re on an overland safari. Tents and camping gear will be packed into your safari vehicle and you’ll set up camp at different locations each night. This is simple accommodation and the best budget option that’s available.

Tented camps provide beds and bathrooms within larger safari-style tents. They are more comfortable than camping sites and a good balance between price, comfort and location. Most visitors don’t need to go for anything more than a tented camp.

Mobile camps are temporary structures that move with the wildlife dependent on the seasons. They are similar to tented camps although more expensive and usually more luxurious, kind of glamping with animals.

Permanent lodges are bigger structures and vary in quality. Again, look for location as much as the facilities on offer.

Five Top Tips for Maximizing the Tanzanian Safari Experience

tanzania for safari

Everyone has their pre-safari dreams. Perhaps it’s spotting a black rhino, maybe a leopard out on a hunt, or ticking off the full big five ? These dreams excite and inspire. But sometimes the preconceptions start detracting from the experience .

Take a Tanzania safari and it’s almost certain you’ll enjoy intimate encounters that reflect all your dreams. But it won’t happen in the first 30 minutes. So don’t worry if the first day doesn’t deliver five lion prides, a 100 strong elephant herd, and quarreling buffalo.

There is beauty to be discovered at every turn ; don’t miss it because you’re worried that a certain animal hasn’t been seen. Relax, soak up every moment of the experience, and the famed big game will come to you.

2. Forget Animal Tick Lists

A Tanzania safari is not like being in a zoo. It’s an authentic immersion in the wild . Every game drive is different and every moment is unpredictable.

Many people have long tick lists of essential sights. But the beauty of a safari is not glimpsing an animal and putting a tick next to its name; it’s admiring the interaction and realism of a world untouched by man .

Don’t worry about tick lists because they don’t reflect the quality of the experience. Watching a giraffe give birth or lions stare down elephants at a waterhole can’t be reflected with a tick.

3. Always Have Your Camera Ready

tanzania for safari

The Tanzania safari isn’t restricted to game drives or the time you spend with a guide. It’s a 24 hours a day experience .

Drift off to sleep and you can hear the trumpeted calls of elephants in trees nearby. Drink morning coffee and a zebra herd is grazing beside your tent . Wake up to evocative paw prints in the dirt nearby . All these are part of the safari yet not part of any game drive or activity.

So when a hippo pod rampages across the riverbank, just below your tent, you’ll want to make sure that you have the camera ready. You don’t want to rummage in your bag to find it and miss out on the experience. So always keep your camera to hand , because the wild Tanzanian landscape brings treats at the most unpredictable of times.

4. Dress Comfortably

Tanzania is usually hot and often dusty. Remember, you’re heading out into a wild animal world, so there won’t be the comforts of air-conditioning.

There’s lots of advice out there about the exact clothes to wear on a Tanzania safari. It’s not complicated. Just dress in clothes that you are comfortable in . There’s no need to arrive in full khaki gear and thick walking boots, especially if you’re only going to be doing game drives.

Just one piece of essential advice: avoid wearing blue . This colour attracts tsetse flies, which can be a painful nuisance.

5. Respect the Animals and the Animals Will Reward You

It’s always important to remember where you are. No, not in a theme park or zoo with captive animals. On a safari! You’re catapulted into their world, so it’s essential to respect the rules and not interrupt the natural cycle of life.

Most importantly, don’t make unnecessary noise or leave an impact on the environment . Respect the animals and they’ll reward you with increasing intimacy.

For example, scream wildly because you’ve just seen a rhino, and the rhino is likely to turn around and march the other way. But stay silent , be patient , and the rhino might walk within just a few meters of you.

Upset an elephant with the camera flash and it’s likely to get frustrated and lose all its endearing elegance. But take photos discreetly and you can be treated to the elephant gently caressing her calf and guiding it to water.

My wife and I have done a trip to Tanzania. I wish all who venture forth this advice. Choose your tour guide service wisely after considerable scrutiny. Thanks to my wife’s efforts we were very successful in our choice. Next and most importantly: Treat your personal guide as you would a family member or a long lost friend. Our rewards were unbelievable. Do not try in any way to interact with any of the wildlife. You are an observer and only an observer, more than that and you may be mistaken for a challenger or lunch. Enjoy yourself but leave any intoxicants out of your excursions.

This is fantastic, especially for someone planning their future trip!

I love how you’ve broken it into great sections and also loveee how you’ve said about respecting the animals. That’s soo important!

Thanks for this!

  • What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania – A Packing List

I f you are headed to Tanzania, but are not quite sure what to wear on safari, I am here to help you out. Here is exactly what to pack – and what not to pack – for a Tanzania safari.

When I went on my very first Tanzania camping safari , the experience was truly awe-inspiring. The chance to see so many animals in the wild that I’d previously only seen on television was, in a word, breathtaking.

While in Tanzania, I saw The Big Five (and then some!), and to date have been on wildlife safaris in four countries now. It never gets less amazing!

However, before taking this trip, I didn’t know what to wear on safari in Tanzania. Did I need khakis and a safari hat? Or stiff rugged boots? I honestly wasn’t sure and had to do a ton of research before I left.

Luckily, after my time in Tanzania, I know exactly what your safari packing list must include. Three main topics this guide will highlight are the importance of comfort, safety, and blending into the environment.

Note: This packing list is written from a woman’s point of view, but all of the items below can be swapped out for the men’s version, too.

Weather in Tanzania

First and foremost, to properly pack, you must be prepared for the diverse climates within the Serengeti and beyond. Remember that Tanzania is in the southern hemisphere, which means that the seasons are reversed from the USA.

Throughout the year, temperatures in the Serengeti and surrounding regions remain relatively stable, hovering around 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. They then drop significantly at night, often cutting the daytime temperature in half.

Tanzania experiences its rainy season in the months of March, April, and May. Despite this, you will likely have clear days and the probability of spotting plenty of animals in the Serengeti . The rainy season tends to be slightly warmer and more humid, contrasting with the drier heat of the dry season.

The prime wildlife viewing months in Tanzania span the dry season, from late June to October. This period offers optimal opportunities to spot elusive species like leopards, driven to water holes by the scarcity of rain.

Additionally, June and July mark the peak of the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, which is exactly why I chose to visit during this time.

General Packing Tips for Tanzania Safari

First and foremost, comfort Is King. You will have very long days in the car, and there are few designated areas that you will actually exit the vehicle. So be sure to dress for comfort over style.

Be sure to pack enough outfits for every day of the safari, plus an extra outfit or two. You will have no chance to do laundry, particularly on a camping safari like I did, because you are moving campsites almost daily.

Consider the color of the clothing you pack. It is ideal that all members of the safari wear greens and browns and blend in with the landscape, lest you scare the wildlife away. For me this was easy to follow, as I have a lot of earth-toned clothing anyway.

Tsetse flies are attracted to dark colors and bright colors, but in particular to the color blue. So don’t pack whites, blues, reds, yellows, and pinks. I went primarily earth-tones with a pale bit of color here or there, and was totally fine.

Important: camouflage clothing is illegal in Tanzania unless you are military personnel. Though it blends in with the surroundings, do not pack it.

Your Tanzania Safari Packing List

Here are the specific items I packed in my luggage for Tanzania. I consider each of them to be safari essentials, and have packed them for all subsequent safaris, too.

This mixture of clothing will allow for layering to combat any and all temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

1. The correct bottoms.

Remember, our two greatest concerns are comfort and color. For me, that meant two types of pants were a must.

First, a pair of thicker bottoms that resemble jeans but have some stretch worked out great for me. Check out these thick stretchy pants for a perfect option. These are your more rugged bottoms for hiking or walking. Be sure to purchase earth tones like olive green or tan if possible.

Second, I had several pairs of basic leggings. You probably already own these but the linked pair comes in shades of green and tan as well as black. Trust me, these were necessary for long days in the Jeep.

And third, I recommend one pair of comfy sweatpants for both longer car days as well as at night. As discussed, the nighttime temperatures can drop. These came in handy at the Ngorongoro Crater campsite, which is very cold because of the high elevation.

2. An array of tops.

Be sure to pack both sleeveless and short sleeve shirts as you will likely drive through many different climates. My safari was 6 days long so I packed enough for the trip plus one extra for my “laundry day.” It worked out well for me and I did the same on safari in Chitwan, Nepal and in Namibia.

Some great and affordable shirt options I recommend are this set of green and black tank tops and several short sleeve tees ( this one has a nice knot-detail, making it way more fun than a basic tee.)

Then on top of those, you should have a long sleeve sweater or a hooded sweatshirt on hand. I actually brought one of each and was glad I did. Remember, layering is key because of all the temperature changes you’ll experience.

3. Footwear.

Though you’ll primarily be in the car on safari days, I found it useful to have a comfortable pair of tennis shoes or trekking sandals. My favorite pair has been on almost every continent with me and is still going strong!

Additionally, I recommend a pair of basic flip flops, both for the car rides and the campsite showers, if you book a camping safari .

Basically, sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or trekking sandals are key. Additionally, bring both thin and thick socks so you have options as you drive deeper into the Serengeti.

4. Sun protection.

The sun can be strong in Tanzania, so protective items will be key – especially if you are headed to Zanzibar post-safari. Beyond sunscreen, here is what else you should pack for your safari in Tanzania.

First, a wide-brimmed hat is a must. The hat was multipurpose or me – besides just keeping the sun at bay, it also kept my long hair somewhat in place while we drove in the open-top vehicle.

The first day I didn’t wear my hat, and my hair turned into a dusty and tangled mess.(Did I mention, you should bring a really good detangling conditioner, especially if you have long hair? Yeah… do that!)

Also pack a pair of sunglasses as well as a lightweight scarf for sun protection. The scarf, by the way, can help block wind and dust, too.

5. Outerwear options.

As I’ve mentioned, layering is going to be important on safari days.

Pack a puffy winter coat that folds down small, so that it won’t take up too much room in your luggage. Ngorongoro Crater was freezing cold overnight, so I was very thankful I had one with me!

I’m a huge fan of this winter jacket, which packs down super small. I have it in both a bright and a muted color palette.

I also recommend a fleece jacket and a waterproof shell for cooler evenings or rainy days.

Gear To Pack for Your Safari

Besides clothing, the next most important items to pack for Tanzania is gear. We’re talking camera gear, binoculars, and more. Here is what I couldn’t live without!

1. Binoculars.

Maybe like you, I did not own a pair of binoculars before my first safari. And, it wasn’t an item that I wanted to invest hundreds of dollars on, because it’s not something that I will use super often.

But I also didn’t want to cheap-out on them, because I wanted them to work well for both this Tanzania safari, but also into the future.

So, I did a lot of research ( seriously, let me save you days of your life .) I ended up buying a pair of binoculars that had the same prism as the most expensive brands, but from a lesser known company, so I wasn’t just paying for the name.

In the end, these binoculars worked very well for me, and have now been used in three countries and counting. I’m sure a professional would give you plenty of other factors to think about, but these were beyond great for me.

2. A good camera.

An African safari is truly a bucket-list item, and in some cases a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Therefore, you should definitely bring a high quality camera.

The Sony Alpha series is absolutely amazing and I have as close to zero complaints as humanly possible. My beloved Sony is hands-down the best camera I’ve ever owned. Pair it with a sharp lens and you are golden.

3. An action camera.

A teeny-tiny camera is perfect for filming and takes up next to no room in your bag. The GoPro Hero 9 and beyond are great for producing SHARP video even on bumpy terrain. Basically I used to GoPro primarily for filming and then my bigger camera for shooting.

4. Toiletries and wellness

Finally, you should remember to pack wellness items and toiletries, as you will not likely find them while on safari. Here are several items not to forget.

  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Small flashlight or headlamp ( my headlamp was invaluable at campsites!)
  • Insect repellent
  • Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer
  • Tissue paper
  • Body wipes such as these biodegradable wipes for dirt and grime
  • A small travel towel
  • Personal toiletries
  • Small first aid kit including things like ibuprofen, antimalaria pills if needed, allergy medicine, band-aids, stomach ache remedy, antibiotic cream, diarrhea medicine, and any prescription medications you need on hand.
  • Clothing: Specify quantities and types of clothing based on trip duration.
  • Personal items: Sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal medications.
  • Safari gear: Binoculars, camera, and reusable water bottle.
  • Provide advice on packing efficiently to maximize space in luggage or safari bags.

Final Thoughts For Your Tanzania Safari

And that covers exactly what to pack for a safari in Tanzania! Each of these items served me well, and served as the basis for my subsequent safari packing lists.

Hopefully this saves you a ton of time and research! If you follow my packing list above, choosing what to pack for your Tanzania safari will be a breeze.

8 Most Charming Places in Tanzania

Found along the coast of East Africa is the great nation of Tanzania . Not the most well-known country in Africa, Tanzania has quietly become one of the upstart places in Africa, boasting a burgeoning and booming tourism industry. Known for its breathtaking landscape, white sand beaches, and vibrant culture, Tanzania is surely to make a good first impression.

Ruaha National Park

A lone giraffe standing in the grasslands at Ruaha National Park.

Ruaha National Park is the largest nature reserve in Tanzania. In 2008, it merged with the neighboring Usangu Game Reserve, now covering more than 20,000km². There are campsites located all over the park, which make for perfect vantage points from which to see the wildlife up close.

Going on a safari here is like no other. There are endless ways to explore the park, all with a warm and helpful guide to help along the way. Most of these safaris are done from the safety of a car, whereas others are conducted on boats. The animals that you will see and the people that you will meet are going to create memories that last a lifetime.

Mahale Mountains National Park

A chimpanzee in the Mahale Mountains.

Another one of Tanzania's stellar national parks, the Mahale Mountains, is located along the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Tanzania. Initially created to protect a large segment of Tanzania's chimpanzee population, the park has become a world-class tourist destination.

The Greystone Mahale Camp is particularly stunning. This one-of-a-kind lodge is the perfect place to go on a romantic getaway with your significant other. There are, of course, plenty of guided tours inland to observe and occasionally interact with the various groups of chimpanzees that call the park home.

Nyerere National Park

Aerial view of Nyerere national Park in Tanzania

Located on in Eastern Tanzania, the Nyerere National Park transports its guests into the thick of the African savannah . Guests can enjoy this park any way they want. There are traditional safaris, boat safaris, and even the option to survey the park from a hot air balloon.

Tours into the bush are also available. This allows guests to observe the wildlife up close and personal. It also gives visitors the chance to visit some of the remote villages that are located within the park. The locals here are famous for their warm demeanor and hospitality .

Mafia Island

Beach resort on Mafia island in Tanzania.

Despite its name having a somewhat foreboding name, Mafia Island couldn't be further removed from any semblance of violence or organized crime. Located along the east coast of Tanzania, Mafia Island's pristine beaches and crystal blue water are nothing short of magical.

Mafia Island's beaches are a hotspot for nesting turtles, and its shallow waters teem with marine life. For those daring enough, the best months to spot whale sharks are from October to February. Even if aquatic life is not to your taste, the laid-back and peaceful nature of the island is enough to make this a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Two elephants grazing beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sitting along its northern border with Kenya is Mount Kilimanjaro , the largest mountain in Africa. Sitting at roughly 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) tall, Kilimanjaro looms over the vast plains of the African savannah.

Climbing to the summit of the mountain is no easy feat, but reaching the top is certainly worth it. For those who have no interest in hiking up Kilimanjaro, there is a fantastic national park available. The park offers tons of tours led by accommodating and friendly guides.

Lake Manyara National Park

Two zebras wading into Lake Manyara.

Found in the north of Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is another great destination for those wanting to get a closer look at the spectacular African wildlife. There are numerous tours available that grant visitors the chance to observe herds of elephants , curious giraffes, and even lion pride.

Aside from the traditional methods of looking at wildlife, there is also a tree-top canopy walk in some places. This gives the park's guests a new and unique way of viewing different kinds of primates and exotic birds. It is a great place to take friends and family.

Ngorongoro Crater

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater National Park. Tanzania.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera . The surrounding area is teeming with wildlife and is the perfect place to go if you want to experience a more traditional safari. The land is home to all the stable animals one would expect, along with the semi-nomadic Maasai nomads who still live and hunt in the area.

There are dozens of high-end resorts guests have to choose from. If staying at a resort is not to your liking, then there are various campsites set up throughout the park that all come with a surprising amount of comfort despite being in the middle of the wilderness. The staff who work at these accommodations are more than happy to help and assist wherever they are needed.

A small fishing town within the Zanzibar Archipelago.

The Zanzibar Archipelago is located off the east coast of Tanzania. There is a lot to do in Zanzibar, and it has quietly become one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Tanzania. Whether you are looking for a relaxing time at the beach or want to explore the city itself, there is something here for everyone.

The Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve is a great place to visit, especially for wadding in the warm turquoise blue water and shallow sandbank that the island is famous for. The old quarter of Zanzibar is another great attraction. Filled with a rich history and Arabian-infused architecture and culture, the city of Zanzibar is one of the more unique places in Africa. Its charm and energy are apparent the moment you arrive.

We asked a few tour operators and have some quotes with different itineraries, but we haven't never been there so it's hard to choose.

From what we understand, the must do parks are Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

The other parks they suggested are Samburu, Lake Nakuru , Ol Pajeta, Amboseli, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. (obviously we can't visit all of them, so we need to pick which ones.)

Do you have any suggestions on which ones to pick, or an example of full itinerary (we start in Nairobi and finish in nairobi)? We want to focus on seeing the most variety of animals and nature, doing some hikes, and visit a village or two.

Do you prefer to fly between camps or drive between camps? If you have a strong preference between fly-in or overland this will shape the trip.

A few random things-

Lake Manyara was damaged by floods a few years ago and many folks have reported mediocre experiences since then. Some overland itineraries still do a stop-over though.

If you are going to go to both Serengeti National park and the Maasai Mara I suggest you consider staying in one of the conservancies on the northern boundary of the Mara National Reserve. The conservancies typically have much fewer trucks/people than the national parks. This allows them to limit vehicles at sightings, offer night drives and off-roading to see predator sightings. This is not allowed in most of the national parks. For these reasons many people prefer the conservancies to the national parks.

If you stay in a conservancy in the Mara then for your time in Serengeti NP you might consider trying to catch up with the massive migration herds. In July they typically are in the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara. On the other hand, if you decide to see the migration in the Mara then consider focusing on the central Serengeti.

Not that you need anymore destinations but I would say that if you wanted to add anywhere else consider Ol Pejeta or Laikipia.

I think that 2-3 nights per camp is optimum.

Thank you for the suggestions!

We would prefer driving, as the cost of the trip is already high because of all the safaris.

Between Amboseli and Tarangire you would suggest Tarangire in July?

About the Masai Mara conservancies, could you tell me the difference between that and the national park? I'm not sure I understand.

Differences in visitor experience between the main national reserve and the conservancies:

The conservancies on the other hand, only allow the vehicles from that conservancy to game drive so there is typically much less vehicle/human traffic in the conservancies. The conservancies also have limits to the number of vehicles at sightings; typically 3-5. Because there is less vehicle traffic in the conservancies, they can allow off-roading to view sightings and night drives.

Regarding your question as whether the experience is similar in the Mara and the Serengeti it depends… It can be similar or by carefully picking camps you could have very different experiences. That is why I suggested the conservancies.

I would pick Tarangire over Amboseli

I would probably skip Lake Nakuru

Kenya and Tanzania were bracing Thursday for a cyclone on the heels of torrential rains that have devastated East Africa, killing more than 350 people and forcing tens of thousands from their homes.

In addition to claiming 188 lives in Kenya since March, the floods have displaced 165,000 people, with 90 reported missing, the interior ministry said, as the government warned citizens to remain on alert.

"Crucially, the coastal region is likely to experience Cyclone Hidaya, which will result in heavy rainfall, large waves and strong winds that could affect marine activities in the Indian Ocean," the office of Kenyan President William Ruto said.

Neighbouring Tanzania, where at least 155 people have been killed in flooding and landslides, is also expected to feel the force of Hidaya.

"The presence of Hidaya Cyclone... is expected to dominate and affect the weather patterns in the country including heavy rain and strong winds in some Regions near Indian Ocean," Tanzania Red Cross Society said on X, formerly Twitter.

Kenya's capital Nairobi is among the areas expected to suffer heavy rains over the next three days, the Kenya Meteorological Department said on X, warning of strong winds and large ocean waves along the country's coastline.

The forecaster urged residents to be vigilant for flash floods and lightning strikes, adding that strong winds could "blow off roofs, uproot trees" and cause other damage.

The heavier than usual rains have also claimed at least 29 lives in Burundi, with 175 people injured, and tens of thousands displaced since September last year, the United Nations said.

- Stranded tourists -

Earlier this week Ruto announced he was deploying Kenya's military to evacuate everyone living in flood-prone areas.

In a bulletin released Thursday evening, the interior ministry ordered anyone living close to major rivers or near 178 "filled up or near filled up dams or water reservoirs" to vacate the area within 24 hours, warning that they would otherwise face "mandatory evacuation for their safety."

The devastation has also affected Kenya's tourism sector -- a key economic driver -- with some 100 tourists marooned in the famed Maasai Mara wildlife reserve on Wednesday after a river overflowed, flooding lodges and safari camps.

Rescuers later managed to evacuate 90 people by ground and air, the interior ministry said.

The area is currently inaccessible with bridges washed away, Narok West sub-county administrator Stephen Nakola told AFP, adding that about 50 camps in the reserve have been affected, putting more than 500 locals temporarily out of work.

There are no fatalities but communities living around the area have been forced to move away.

"Accessing the Mara is now a nightmare and the people stuck there are really worried, they don't have an exit route," Nakola said, adding that waterborne diseases were likely to emerge.

"I am worried that the situation could get worse because the rains are still on."

In the deadliest single incident in Kenya, dozens of villagers were killed when a dam burst on Monday near Mai Mahiu in the Rift Valley, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) north of Nairobi.

The interior ministry said 52 bodies had been recovered and 51 people were still missing after the dam disaster.

- Travel warnings -

Opposition politicians and lobby groups have accused Ruto's government of being unprepared and slow to respond to the crisis despite weather warnings.

"Kenya's government has a human rights obligation to prevent foreseeable harm from climate change and extreme weather events and to protect people when a disaster strikes," Human Rights Watch said Thursday.

The United States and Britain have issued travel warnings for Kenya, urging their nationals to be cautious amid the extreme weather.

The devastation has sparked an outpouring of condolences and pledges of solidarity from all over the world, including from Pope Francis and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The rains have been amplified by the El Nino weather pattern -- a naturally occurring climate phenomenon typically associated with increased heat worldwide, leading to drought in some parts of the world and heavy downpours elsewhere.
