Pro tip: There are several nature conservatories on the island, the most popular being the 190-acre Clay Head Preserve on the northeast coast, which features a series of unmarked, interconnected walking paths known as “the maze.” It's worth visiting any time of year, but it happens to be one of the island’s best leaf-peeping spots in the fall.

Getting there: The Block Island Ferry provides year-round service from Point Judith and is the only ferry that can take vehicles from the mainland to the island. You can also take the Block Island Hi-Speed Ferry for a 30-minute trip, but that boat only runs from mid-May through the end of November. (The scenery along the ride is so gorgeous, you’ll probably want to take the slow route anyway.)

Think of the Big Island as the ultimate adventure playground. While it’s not exactly Hawaii’s best beach destination, the island stands out for its stunning national parks and volcanoes. The active Kilauea volcano and surrounding 505-square-mile Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the place to experience lava flows, craters, and steam vents. Waipi‘o Valley (known as the Valley of the Kings) is another staggering display of nature, with verdant walking trails dotted with waterfalls.

Pro tip: After a busy day spent outdoors, refuel on the Aka roll with shrimp tempura and spicy ahi at Aka Sushi Bar in Waimea. You’ll thank us later.

Getting there: Most major air carriers offer daily flights to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) in Kona. If you can’t find a direct flight, fly into Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on Oahu and take a 40-minute flight to the Big Island.

9. Kauai, Hawaii

The lushest and greenest of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai more than earns its nickname, “The Garden Isle.” Most spots worth visiting require a bit of effort, as you can only reach one-fifth of the island on foot or in a car, but it’s more than worth it. You’ll need a four-wheel drive to get to Polihale Beach, for example, which is accessed via a rough and rocky five-mile road. But it’s arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Hawaii, with sweeping sand dunes, incredible sunsets, and unforgettable stargazing thanks to the lack of light pollution. Another tough-to-access-but-worth-it spot is Honopu Beach, which you can only reach by swimming from an offshore boat or from neighboring Kalalau Beach (a quarter-mile swim).

Pro tip: It would be a sin to visit Kauai and not spend a day on the Napali Coast . Get the best vantage points on an open-door flight over the cliffs and valleys, or join a kayak tour to paddle to its isolated beach.

Getting there: Most airlines offer non-stop flights to Lihue Airport (LIH). There is also the option of flying into Honolulu International Airport (HNL) and hopping on a half-hour flight to Kauai.

8. Mackinac Island, Michigan

A long-beloved vacation spot for Midwesterners, Mackinac Island was a welcome addition to last year’s list—and it looks like the appeal hasn’t wavered a bit this year. Most of the island (80 percent, to be exact) lies within the protected Mackinac Island State Park, meaning it’s both well-preserved and filled with natural beauty. Nantucket joins Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts’ roster of highly-flocked to summer colonies. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Just 45 minutes from Savannah and Beaufort, this low-country island is all about southern hospitality. Maui, Hawaii

Ask nearly anyone and they’ll tell you that Maui doesn’t just land the list of America’s most beautiful islands, but the world’s, too. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Stepping onto the resort Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time. The 3.8 miles of land floating in Michigan’s Lake Huron is home to less than 500 year-round residents, but that's just the start of its small town feel. San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juan Islands off the northwest corner of Washington state comprise some 172 land masses and reef bodies, but it’s Orcas, Lopez, Shaw and San Juan (singular) that hold all the goods. Hopping a quick ferry or flight from Seattle, Bellingham, or Vancouver, you’ll be mesmerized by the archipelago’s rugged Pacific Northwest landscape – subalpine forests, rocky beaches and reef-studded bays. Since the tiny slice of land is home to only 900 year-round residents, it maintains a level of rustic simplicity with steep ocean bluffs, winding roads and stoic 18th-century lighthouses (which were once architectural marvels). Scarf down the freshest lobster rolls at Southeast Light Delights on the Mohegan Bluffs near Southeast Lighthouse , or if you’re anti-seafood, try out a ricotta grilled cheese on sourdough, stuffed with local blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, and then drizzled with honey. Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina, or just Catalina, as it’s known to those who frequent it, has everything the jetsetting elite are keen on (Marilyn Monroe herself once called the island home) – namely swaying palms, white sandy beaches, exquisite dive sites, and a soothing island vibe. Getting there is a cinch, with ferries regularly leaving from Long Beach, Dana Point, Newport Beach and San Pedro, and once you’re on the island, in main town Avalon, which is only a mile, you’ll see everyone gets around on foot (no joke, there’s a 14-year wait list for residents to get a car on the island). Take lunch at the Inn on Mt. This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

From coast to coast , the best islands in the Continental U.S. attract all types of travelers, but readers seem to have a soft spot for the eastern seaboard — especially when it comes to Florida, which lays claim to five of the top islands. Still, there's a Midwestern haven that continues to draw fans from every corner of the country.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

Mackinac Island (No. 9), located on Lake Huron, has been the site of so many important happenings — a major battle in the War of 1812, for starters — that it's been designated a National Historical Landmark. And while 80 percent remains protected as a state park, it also has a plethora of galleries, restaurants, and sites to explore on foot, bike, or in a horse-drawn carriage (no automobiles are allowed). "What a different place to visit," said one voter. "It's like its own little world."

Also coveted for its sense of isolation is Maine's 108-square-mile Mount Desert Island. Landing in the No. 8 spot, it is home to the majority of Acadia National Park, where nature lovers can hike the tallest mountain on the East Coast and explore the rocky beaches. One reader called it the "best biking spot ever!" There are also several lively towns, including Bar Harbor, which hosts annual music and fine-arts festivals. It has a walkable downtown packed with shops, restaurants, and bars.

But this year's No. 1 island, Hilton Head , has been a familiar favorite for years. Read on to learn why readers continue to vote for it as the best island in the continental United States.

With 12 miles of pristine beaches, 33 golf courses, 60 miles of walking trails, as well as outstanding restaurants, museums and galleries, this South Carolina island has been popular with voters for years. For longer stays, many visitors choose to rent houses, but comfortable hotels abound. The US is a large country, so it’s no surprise that there are quite a few islands in the United States as well. You can explore tropical islands, Midwestern islands, and even islands in the Northeast or Southeast.

All of these amazing islands are considered US soil, so you won’t ever need a passport to visit them. Some of them are really close to mainland USA, and others do require a bit longer flight. But that also depends on where you’re traveling from. We’ve tried to find the best American islands throughout the whole country. So no matter where you are located, you’ll find an island in the USA to visit near you.

Some of our favorites are the many tropical islands in the USA. But if that’s not your thing, don’t worry. There are plenty of different types of islands in America. That means that no matter what kind of island vacation you’re interested in, there’s a perfect island getaway for you. So, let’s take a look at 16 of the best islands in the USA!

Dry Tortugas, Florida

Dry Tortugas is actually a National Park in Florida. It is about 70 miles west of Key West, one of the most popular of the Florida Keys. Because it’s a National Park, the only option for staying on Dry Tortugas is camping. If that’s something you’re up for, it’s a really fun experience. Otherwise, you’ll want to stay in Key West and travel to Dry Tortugas.

Included in Dry Tortugas National Park is a series of smaller keys. They all make up the larger collection of islands simply known as Dry Tortugas. The islands all have different attractions. You can explore a historic fort, see local wildlife, go snorkeling, ride a seaplane, and there is also a ferry around the islands. Dry Tortugas is one of the coolest islands in the USA to explore.

Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

If you want to go to the Caribbean, but you don’t have a passport, then you need to check out the US Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands is a series of islands that are considered US territory. So even though they are in the Caribbean, US citizens can visit them without needing any type of passport. One of our favorite tropical islands in the USA is Saint Croix. From Florida, it is about a 3-hour nonstop flight and there are so many things to do in Saint Croix!

Saint Croix was once a Dutch settled island. While it was owned by the Dutch, it was part of the transatlantic slave trade. So there are many parts of the island where you’ll learn about the Dutch slave trade that operated out of Saint Croix. The island has a rich history, from before and after Dutch occupation, and it’s absolutely beautiful. There are sugar plantations, tropical mountains, and beautiful beaches to explore during your visit.

Oahu, Hawaii

When most people think of tropical vacations in the USA, they think of Hawaii. Oahu is the main island in Hawaii, but it’s not the largest. However, it is where you’ll find most of the typical tourist activities. Oahu is also where the state’s capital city of Honolulu is located. It’s also one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the USA. To get to Oahu, it’s about a 6-hour flight from California. And let us tell you, there are a lot of luxury hotels in Hawaii if you are into that sort of thing!

Oahu is an island in the USA that has tons to offer. You can relax on the famous Waikiki Beach, head around the island to see incredible surfers at the North Shore, and more.

Most people choose to stay right in Honolulu, as that is where you’ll find activities like traditional luaus and snorkeling. But everywhere on the island is absolutely beautiful, and each side has something different to offer. It is home to some of the best luxury hotels in the USA!

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, you can find Vieques. From Florida, you’ll need to take two flights to reach Vieques. It’s typically at least a 6-hour trip. Vieques is an island in the Caribbean that is known for the best Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico . You can take boat tours of the bay and see the amazing colorful algae in the water.

You’ll also find some beautiful beaches. Because a lot of the island is a National Wildlife Refuge, you’ll get to see some amazing wildlife as well. In the countryside, there are wild horses. Around the beaches, you can snorkel and see some amazing marine life. It’s easily one of the best tropical islands in the USA.

South Padre Island, Texas

One of the prettiest islands in the USA is Texas’ South Padre Island! South Padre Island is in the Gulf of Mexico just off of the southern coast of Texas. If you fly into the Brownsville airport, you’ll have a short 20-minute drive to get to South Padre Island. So it’s one of the easiest islands in America to get to.

South Padre Island is a resort island, so you’ll find plenty of things to do there. You can try horseback riding on the beach, spend your days by the pool at one of the amazing resorts, or visit the Sea Turtle Conservation Center. There are also fun amusement parks, beautiful trails to explore, and of course, gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches. It’s one of the best USA islands to visit if you don’t want to travel far but still want a tropical atmosphere.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

The US is full of pretty beach towns . One of those pretty beach towns is actually Mackinac Island, an island in Michigan. Mackinac Island isn’t a tropical island and it’s in Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes. The charming island doesn’t allow any vehicles. So you’ll need to take a ferry from nearby Mackinaw City, but it’s only a 15-minute ride! Most people on the island get around either on foot or you can rent and bring your own bicycles. You can also take carriage rides on a horse-drawn carriage!

The island is incredibly charming and is full of Victorian flair. There are 10 historic museums on the island, beautiful historic buildings, and a lighthouse. It also has unique shops, restaurants, and more to explore. If you’re interested, you can even learn how to make the island’s famous fudge. While you’re there, you’ll definitely want to explore Mackinac Island State Park as well. It’s full of beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and scenic views.

Sanibel Island, Florida

For some of the best sunsets in Florida, you’ll want to visit Sanibel Island. Sanibel Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the USA. To get to Sanibel, you’ll want to fly into nearby Fort Meyers. From there, it’s about a 45-minute drive to reach Sanibel Island. You can also get to the island by boat if that’s more your speed.

On the island, you’ll want to take some time to try shelling. That just means walking the beach and collecting seashells. Sanibel Island is known for having one of the best varieties of shells. They are all beautiful, and you can actually find some more rare shells there as well. When you’re not shelling, you’ll want to relax on the white sand beach and swim in the gorgeous blue waters.

Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Saint Thomas is probably one of the most popular islands in the US Virgin Islands. It’s often called the getaway island. The island is also only a little under 3-hours by plane from Florida. So it’s one of the tropical islands in the USA that is fairly quick and easy to get to. It is absolutely worth the short flight, and you will love the beautiful island.

While you’re in Saint Thomas, you’ll absolutely want to spend time on the picturesque beaches. We also suggest seeing the port city, and territorial capital, Charlotte Amalie. It’s a bustling port city that has tons of activities, historic buildings, and a watchtower called Blackbeard’s Castle. The name is a reference to the area’s pirate history. But it’s important to remember that since it was originally a Dutch colony, it also has a history in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Another beautiful island in the USA is Maui, Hawaii. Maui is one of the smaller Hawaiian islands. You can get to it via Oahu, which is just a 45-minute flight away. In total, Maui is about a 7-hour flight from California. So it is a bit of a trek. However, the flight is absolutely worth it because it is one of the absolute prettiest tropical islands in the USA.

Galveston Island, Texas

Galveston Island is often just referred to as Galveston, the island’s city namesake. It’s one of the best islands in America and it’s full of things to do . You can get to Galveston pretty easily from Houston. It’s just a little under an hour from the city. Galveston is one of the most popular islands near Texas to visit and it sits in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.

While you’re in Galveston, there is an endless amount of activities. Because it’s a popular Texas resort island, there are unique attractions. Saint John, US Virgin Islands

Saint John is another stunning island in the USA that is part of the US Virgin Islands chain. It is actually the smallest of the three Virgin Islands that are US territories. To get there, you’ll need to take a 3-hour flight from Florida. It’s a beautiful island that is mostly still very natural and wild.

Over half of the island is actually the Virgin Islands National Park. The National Park shelters migratory birds, especially warblers and hummingbirds. In the park, you’ll also find mangroves, coral reefs, and a tropical forest. One of the main attractions of visiting Saint John is getting to see the dolphins and the green and hawksbill sea turtles that call the island home.

Located in the North Pacific Ocean, Guam is the furthest island in the United States from mainland USA. To get to Guam, you’ll need to take a series of flights that typically last over 17 hours. However, the long flights are absolutely worth it once you get there. Guam is one of the best tropical places in the USA to visit.

It has beautiful tropical beaches, authentic Chamorro villages, and historic stone pillars and structures. Guam became a territory shortly before WWII and was an incredibly important US territory during that war. To mark that importance, the island has the War in the Pacific National Historical Park. You’ll be able to tour a battlefield and also see remnants of the Spanish colonies that once occupied the island.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island is off the coast of Georgia. It is part of Georgia’s Golden Isles. The Golden Isles is a string of islands that stretches out from Savannah all the way down to Jacksonville Florida. Jekyll Island is also considered one of the Sea Islands. The island is pretty easy to get to and it’s only a little under 2 hours away from the city of Savannah, Georgia.

On Jekyll Island, you’ll find one of the prettiest beaches in Georgia . Driftwood Beach is known for its sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets, and abundance of seashells. However, the thing that Driftwood Beach is most known for is the large ancient driftwood trees that are on the beach. It feels like stepping into another world and it’s absolutely one of the most beautiful islands in the USA.

They are some of the best places to visit in America for a summer vacation. Whether you long for tropical heat or cool summer breezes, you will be able to find the perfect island destination. For many of these island destinations, June, July, August and September are the best time to visit, although some are fantastic all year round. Best Islands In United States To Visit In Summer

Here are the 21 of the most beautiful islands to visit in the USA in summer. They are located all over the United States, including the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands which are territories belonging to the United States.

The bottom line is that if you are an American, you do not need a US passport to travel to any of these destinations.

In this article, I separate these islands into regions of the USA – northeast, southeast southwest, and northwest – to help you identify which islands may be closer to your departure point or proposed itinerary. In addition, to keep things simple, I define summer to include all of June, July, August, and September.

As for the expected weather, that is outlined so that you can decide whether it will be too hot or too cool for your liking. In July and August, many of these islands have extreme heat and humidity, mimicking a tropical island even though it is firmly found in the USA.

The best things to do are highlighted as well as important annual events or festivals, if any. If there is a good hotel or camping ground nearby, those are also described.

There is a lot from which to choose. So, sit back, relax, read and dream about your next island retreat!

Best Islands To Visit In Northeastern USA In Summer

There are many beautiful islands to visit in the northeast of the United States for a magnificent summer holiday. Some are located in the Atlantic Ocean right off the coast while others are tucked inland in forests and lakes several hundred miles away.

Generally, these northern islands offer mild summer temperatures without much humidity throughout the entire summer. Of course, there are exceptions and those are noted below.

Each island offers unique experiences, outdoor activities, and fantastic summer vacation opportunities that compliment the breathtaking landscapes and beautiful beaches that they all offer. Here are 7 of the best islands in northeastern America for a summer getaway.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

One of the best islands to visit in the USA in the summer months is Nantucket in Massachusetts. Nantucket is a stunning island with a varied landscape of forest, cranberry bogs, and windswept beaches.

The best way to get around the island is by bike as there are wonderful bike paths connecting the different parts of the island. However, you can also drive your own car across the island or rent a car once you arrive on Nantucket.

Among the many wonderful things to do on the island, you can explore the best beaches which are Siasconset beach, Madaket beach, and Jetties beach among others. You can expect to find benches and restaurants on the beaches as well as parking and bike racks.

A nice walk if you are at the Siasconset part of the island is the Sconset Bluff Walk. It takes you from the village, past luxury villas on one side and the mesmerizing beach on the other, all the way to Sankaty Head Lighthouse, which is beautiful at sunset.

In downtown Nantucket, make sure you visit the Whaling Museum where you can learn about the whaling history of the island. While the whaling industry in Nantucket has ended, the island is the perfect destination to go whale watching during the summer months.

There are always fun summer festivals going on in Nantucket, so make sure you check for your travel dates.

No matter if you go on a  day trip to Nantucket  or spend a week, you can expect mild daytime temperatures in the high 70s F during most of the summer. You can expect around 7 days of rain each month and about half the days in July and August will have high humidity. Thus, you should bring both your swimsuit and your raincoat during the summer months in Nantucket.

Best Way To Reach Nantucket

Situated right off Cape Cod, Nantucket is easily accessed by ferry from Harwich Port, Hyannis, New Bedford, and even New York . But Nantucket also has a national airport that is connected to most US major airports. The closest international airport would be Boston .

Mackinac Island, Michigan

When daydreaming of an island getaway, Michigan likely isn’t the first destination to come to mind.  However, treating yourself to a vacation on Mackinac Island will transport you back in time. You’ll feel like you’ve left the US altogether.

Mackinac Island is famous for maintaining its 1898 ordinance that no modern vehicles are allowed on the island. Instead, visitors easily explore by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage.  

Once here, you’ll be inundated with the smell of fudge! There are over a dozen fudge shops on Main Street, many of which offer tours or fudge making demonstrations. You won’t find chain restaurants or stores, making every shop you step into a one-of-a-kind experience.  

Most hotels offer a horse-drawn “taxi” to transport you to your accommodation upon arrival on the ferry. If they not, don’t leave the island without exploring a portion of it by horse-drawn carriage, whether it is a brief jaunt or a guided historic tour. 

Another popular way to take in the island’s coastline is to rent a bicycle and ride the 8-mile loop around the island, stopping at scenic viewpoints and historic sites along the way. Consider concluding your bike trip with a lunch reservation at the Grand Hotel. 

While you won’t find traditional sandy beaches anywhere on Mackinac Island, you can enjoy the smooth rock beach at the south end of the downtown area. 

The island is open from May to October. A visit during their 10-day Lilac Festival in June is a real treat for the senses.  

No matter how you choose to experience the island’s charm, it will be one of the best places you visit in the USA in summer. 

The best time to visit Mackinac island is in summer. It offers moderate temperatures (typically average highs in the 70s) throughout the summer months, making it a very comfortable place to visit in the United States. 

Best Way To Reach MacKinac Island

To reach the island, you’ll take a 16 minute ferry ride from Mackinaw City with one of two companies: Shepler’s or Star Line. You’ll leave your car on the mainland.  

The nearest airport is about 20 miles from Mackinaw City, the Pellston (PLN) Airport. Other nearby airports include Sault Ste Marie (YAM) and Traverse City (TVC).

Grand Isle is the largest of the idyllic  islands in Lake Champlain  in Vermont. It is known for its pastoral scenery and spectacular sunrises and sunsets over Lake Champlain. The charming bucolic beauty of the island will take you back in time. It is one of the best US islands to go to for an amazing summer vacation.

Biking the quiet roadways of the island is a popular pastime. There are miniature stone castles built along the roadsides to discover. Built by a Swiss artist who missed his homeland, these tiny castles are a delightful “I Spy” adventure on the island. While biking, stop at a local apple orchard for the classic Vermont treat, a maple creemee.

A visit to Snow Farm Vineyard is a must. Besides tastings of their wine and locally produced snacks, the winery hosts weekly summer concerts on its expansive grounds.

The state parks of Grand Isle offer beautiful scenery, lakeshore fishing, and beach time. Grand Isle State Park has camping and boat rentals for exploring the lake. You can also rent bikes and enjoy the large sandy beach.

Average temperatures in the summer range from 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit, with temperatures reaching the 80s in June, July and August. Days are mostly sunny and clear with an occasional afternoon thunderstorm.

Best Way To Reach Grand Isle

Grand Isle can be accessed from either Burlington, Vermont or Plattsburg, New York. They both have international airports. It’s a 30 minute drive from Burlington by bridge or a 15 minute car ferry from Plattsburg. Grand Isle is also a wonderful day trip from Montreal. Public transport is limited so a car is recommended.

Assateague Island, Maryland

Assateague offers 37 miles of shoreline and some of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast of the United States. All of the beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean have pristine sandy expansive shores with a barrier of protective dunes. They are perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

Over on the bay side of the island, kite surfing and kayaking are popular. So if water sports and beach activities are what you’re after, summer is the best time to come. However, there is so much more! 

Grab your binoculars and hike the Marsh Nature Trail and the Forest Nature Trail in the National Seashore for the best wildlife viewings. With more than 200 species of birds, you’re apt to see egrets and herons and possibly even bald eagles. The scenery is quite picturesque especially in the marsh where the seagrass is high and wooden bridges are your trail.

The famous wild ponies (which are really wild horses) also love this area, But then again, you never know where they will turn up. They roam the beaches, streets, parking lots, and trails freely. Look a little closer to see deer, fox, and other critters.

When making your plans, keep in mind that the Park Service limits the number of visitors, so if you’re going on a busy weekend or during peak summer holidays, go early.

Mount Desert Island lies just off the rocky coast of Maine in the far northeast corner of the United States. The island is hilly and covered in woods and the shorelines are lined with gorgeous pink granite rocks. The island is home to Bar Harbor and a large part of Acadia National Park, one of the best national parks in the USA, as well as several other small fishing towns.

The area is one of the main lobster fisheries in the country, and in summer you can eat fresh lobster at any of the many lobster pounds on the Island. A top pick is Thurstson’s, a casual restaurant right on the water’s edge, where you can watch the fishing boats arrive with its fresh catch as you enjoy your meal.

Another fun thing to do is to go hiking in Acadia National Park. This National Park is famous for the iron rung trails – where iron rungs and ladders are embedded into the sides of cliffs. Climbing up them and walking along narrow ledges is not for the faint-of-heart, but the views from the top of the mountains, overlooking Mount Desert Island and the surrounding seas and islands, are incredible.

The area around Mount Desert Island is also a great place to see whales and puffins in summer. One of the best thing to do is to take a cruise to get closer to these animals.

If you’d like to head to the beach, the appropriately-named Sand Beach is the only sandy ocean beach – it’s beautiful but the water is cold. For a warmer swim, Echo Lake Beach is the place to go.

And don’t miss the Bar Harbor Music Festival, which is held for the entire month of July.

To get to Mount Desert Island, which is connected to the mainland via a short bridge, you can drive from Bangor, which is where you’ll find  the nearest airport to Acadia National Park . The nearest international airport is Boston Logan International Airport, which is a 4.5-hour drive away. From either airport, you can drive or take a bus to Bar Harbor and take the free Island Explorer shuttle around the island.

High speed passenger-only ferries take just 30 minutes to get to the island, but you can also choose to take your car on the traditional ferry, which takes about 1 hour.

One of the  best things to do on Martha’s Vineyard  is to explore the three main small towns: Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown. All three have their own cool vibe and history.

There is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the water on Martha’s Vineyard. There are several public beaches on the island and places to rent kayaks and SUPs. You can even rent small sailboats. The surf tends to be calm on Martha’s Vineyard, but you can catch some waves at South Beach.

If you’d rather spend your time on land, there are over 40 miles of paved bike trails and several miles of hiking trails. Take the time to visit Gayhead Light, the first lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard. You might recognize it from the movie  Jaws .

There are no bridges to Martha’s Vineyard, so you must take an airplane or ferry to the island. The main ferry leaves from Woods Hole in Cape Cod. However, smaller ferries leave from New Bedford, MA, Quonset, RI, and Hyannis, MA.

Once on the island, you’ll either want to rent a car or a bicycle to get around easily. However, the island’s public transportation is also a good option.

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Located deep in Lake Superior, the 45 mile Isle Royale National Park is one of the least visited National Parks in the lower 48 states. Established in 1940, the Park consists of over 90 % wilderness within its boundaries.

The island is home to wolves, moose, deer, and other wildlife. Many believe the animals crossed over “ice bridges” that form during some winters. 

Most visitors to the Island visit either as a day trip or on an adventure to cross the island. It takes roughly 4-5 days to cross the island, with various primitive campsites across the National Park.

Hiking is available at each of the different landing points. Day visits often include exploring wreck sites and lighthouses in the area. One of the most interesting lighthouses, Rock of Ages is a popular stop for visitors from Minnesota. Built on a small rock outcropping, it is an engineering marvel. Visits to the lighthouse are possible, often through the Rock of Ages Preservation Society.

The Island and Park are open from mid-April to the end of October annually and closed (even to private boats) otherwise. Summer is the best time to visit this American island due to weather and boat service options.

Average highs in June, July and August are in the low to high 70s Fahrenheit. The average high goes down to 64 degree Fahrenheit in September.

Best Way To Reach Isle Royale National Park

Access to the National Park is only via ferry and while the Park is located wholly within Michigan’s boundaries, access is either from Michigan or Minnesota. It’s actually closer to reach from Minnesota for those looking to do a day trip.

Day visitors from Minnesota generally land at Windigo on the western shore and from Michigan at Rock Harbor. However, there are ferry services to both sides generally from each location for thru-hikers. The Minnesota ferry terminal is located in the Grand Portage Reservation with few hotels and services.

Due to popularity and the short season, it is recommended to book ferries ahead of time.

Most visitors fly into Minneapolis or Duluth and drive. Michigan boats depart from Hougton or Copper Harbor on the Upper Peninsula. These boats are much further from international airports and also require a longer boat ride.

There are spectacularly beautiful islands in the southeast of the United States. One of the best times to visit them is in winter when you are looking for an escape from the cold. However, they are also some of the best places in the USA to visit in summer.

If you are considering a summer holiday to any of these islands, you must be aware of two issues. First, most days in July and August will have high humidity. If you love tropical heat, then you will love these islands in summer.

Some of the best islands to visit in southern USA for a summer vacation are the Outer Banks (or as the locals call them, the “OBX”). This is a beautiful stretch of barrier-type islands right off the eastern coast of North Carolina. 

You can break down these islands into three different sections. You have the northern section full of beaches, Hatteras Island in the middle, and the southern sections of Manteo and Roanoke Island. 

There is so much to do in the Outer Banks in summer. The famous fishing show Wicked Tuna is filmed here right off of the Oregon Inlet. You could charter a boat and try your hand at catching yourself a monster fish just like they do. 

Another fascinating and historic thing to do in the OBX is to go and see where the Wright Brothers first took flight. Located in the heart of Kitty Hawk, you will find the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

There are plenty of beaches to enjoy. All you have to do is find a parking lot along the side of the road and pull in! All of the beaches are free and open to the public. In the summer months, it can be hard to find a good parking spot so try to arrive early to avoid a long walk.

To reach the Outer Banks, fly into Norfolk International Airport in Norfolk, Virginia and drive 82 miles north. There are only two ways to get to the beautiful OBX islands. One of the best islands to visit in the United States in summer is the Channel Islands off the coast of Ventura, California. There are five islands that make up Channel Islands National Park and the surrounding marine nature reserve.

Thousands of people flock to the islands every year in search of the incredible amount of aquatic wildlife in the area. Multiple currents collide around the islands and bring in a huge amount of fish, and in turn, a large population of whales. 

Channel Islands National Park is home to a large variety of whale species including gray whales, humpback whales, blue whales, and minke whales. There are also hundreds of dolphins swimming in the channels. If you are lucky, you may even spot some sea lions and fur seals as well. 

There are so many things to do in the Channel Islands including camping, multi-day hikes, and even sea cave kayaking. If you are feeling extra adventurous, sea cave kayaking in the Channel Islands is an adventure to remember. Instead of simply taking your kayaks out on the ocean, your guide will navigate you in and out of sea caves while avoiding the rising tide and sharp turns in the caves.

In order to get to the Channel islands, take the ferry run by Island Packers. It is offered a few times a day. If you are coming from out of town, you can fly into LAX in Los Angeles and rent a car to get to the Ventura marina where the ferry launches. This ferry is your main way on and off the island.

Kauai is the second westernmost island of the main Hawaiian islands chain. Nicknamed the “Garden Isle,” Kauai is known for its lush rainforests and stunning coastline. It is one of the most beautiful islands to visit in America for a summer holiday.

There are so many amazing things to do on Kauai, but there are a few stand-out activities you can’t miss. First, spend some time on the Na Pali Coast. This gorgeous coastline has a state park with wonderful hiking trails, where you can marvel at the island’s sheer cliffs, white sand beaches, and tropical foliage. It’s also a fantastic place to snorkel or take a boat tour to see the coastline from a different perspective.

Next, drive through the famous Waimea Canyon. This multi-colored canyon will give you beautiful scenic views with lookout points and hikes.

Lastly, a helicopter tour of the island is highly recommended. From the air, you can really appreciate the magnificence of Kauai’s cliffs, canyons, jungles, waterfalls, and beaches. It’s an unforgettable experience and one of the most highly rated activities on the island.

Best Way To Reach Kauai

To get to Kauai, you’ll fly into the Lihue Airport, which connects to Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, destinations on the US mainland, and some Canadian cities. While it’s possible to get between the larger towns on Kauai by public bus, it’s best to rent a car to easily access the popular destinations the island has to offer.

Santa Catalina, California

Located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, Santa Catalina Island – with its Mediterranean charm, fun activities and relaxed island atmosphere – will truly transport you to another world.

The town of Avalon is the heart of Catalina Island. It offers tree-lined pedestrian walkways that trace the waterfront and homes that climb the steep hills surrounding town. It is where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, hotels, beaches and activities, including the world-famous Casino Building and botanical gardens. The boat terminals are also located here.

Avalon is almost free of cars, with most people opting to walk or drive golf carts. The fact that it is only one square mile makes it easy to get around. The picturesque harbor around which Avalon is nestled provides a good excuse to slow down and enjoy the view.

There are many things to enjoy on Catalina Island during the summer. Stroll through Avalon’s quaint shops and galleries, or go for a bike ride or rent a golf cart. Enjoy a meal at a harbor-view restaurant. Alternatively, pack a picnic and go for a hike, or kayak, snorkel, go fishing, or simply relax on the beach.

As wonderful as the town of Avalon is, it is only a very small part of Catalina Island.  If you want to experience the “wild” side of the island, a journey into the island’s vast interior is a must.

Catalina Island’s interior, about 88% of the island, is owned and managed by the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy. The interior is covered with broad valleys, isolated coves, pristine beaches, two thousand-foot peaks and near-vertical shoreline palisades. It is also home to thousands of species of unique native plants and animals.

Go camping, hiking or mountain biking in the island’s protected wilderness. Or, explore the island’s interior on a Jeep Eco-tour or sightseeing tour. You can even go zip lining! 

Summer is the best time to visit this island. The weather is mild with average highs in the 70s F and it almost never rains, making it the perfect island escape! 

Best Way To Reach Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina Island is easy to reach. It is about 60 minutes boat ride from Newport Beach,  Long Beach  or San Pedro.

San Juan Island, Washington

San Juan Island is the second largest – and namesake- of the San Juan Islands, an archipelago in northern USA, off the coast of Washington state in the Salish Sea. Here, you’ll find rolling hills, covered with pine tree forests, rugged cliffs, and charming small towns, all of which offer you one of the best islands to visit in the USA in summer.

San Juan Island is home to Friday Harbor, the largest town in the islands, with a whopping 3,000 residents. This town is stuffed with wine bars, farm to table restaurants, and eclectic boutiques to peruse, all with the stunning Pacific Northwest backdrop.

Friday Harbor, famously the location of the witchy movie, Practical Magic, has a funky, free-spirited vibe to it. For example, it plays host to the San Juan Summer Arts Festival, usually in August of each year, with local art, live music, and lots of tasty food and drinks on the menu.

While most visitors stay in Friday Harbor when visiting San Juan Island, they mainly come for one thing – whales. The San Juan Islands are largely regarded as the best place for whale watching in Washington and is one of the best spots on the planet to see orcas in the wild. You can opt to go on a whale watching tour or alternatively, simply keep an eye out from land.

One of the best places to do so is Lime Kiln Point State Park. Even if you’re not lucky enough to spot whales, there’s a historic lighthouse and a coastal hiking trail to enjoy. 

Alternatively, if a beach sounds more up your alley, the island has many of them, from the rugged South Beach, which is best for its wildlife spotting opportunities and dramatic landscape, to Granny’s Cove, with shallow waters that can warm up enough to wade around in during the summer.

Don’t expect beach weather here – summertime temperatures rarely exceed 80 ° F. Average highs are more likely in the low 70s in July and August, and in the high 60s in June and September. There are only a few days of rain each month and no humidity.

Best Way To Reach San Juan Island

To reach the island, you’ll take a ferry from Anacortes. You can either fly into Bellingham International airport and drive 50 minutes, or fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and drive just under 2 hours.

If you’re headed here in the peak of summer, be sure to book your ferry tickets early, as they frequently sell out. There’s no need to bring a car – there’s a trolly and public transit system that stops at the most popular sites on the island.

Chicahagof Island, Alaska

Chichagof Island might not be on most people’s radar, but it’s the fifth-largest island in the United States. This wilderness land is located in the Alaska panhandle and features some incredible natural beauty. Less than 1,500 aboriginal Huna Tlingit people call Chichagof Island their home.

When arriving by cruise ship, the lack of urban development captivates you. Instead, the Tongass Rainforest fronts the coastline filled with bald eagles. The Huna Totem Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line have developed the docking area to retain its natural beauty.

As you step off your vessel, you wont find any roads or town, just an old cannery repurposed into a cannery museum with some retail shopping. But, if you’re looking for  things to do in Icy Strait Point , this Alaskan destination offers many unique adventures.

Since Chichagof Island has more bears per square mile than anywhere else globally, you should take a bear-watching tour. 

Alternatively, the marine-rich waters around the island provide one of the best places to take a whale-watching excursion. As humpback whales migrate to Alaska to feed in the summer, their arrival matches Alaska cruise season.

But Icy Strait Point might be best known for its gondola, the ZipRider. At 5,330 feet long, it’s rated the longest worldwide. You’ll enjoy magnificent views on the gondola ride to the top of Hoonah Mountain. The 60 MPH ride to sea level will have your heart racing. 

You don’t visit Alaska for the beaches or the weather. In summer, the average temperature hovers around 57F and June offers the driest month, with 3-1/2 inches of rain. However, this is a fantastic summer destination for nature lovers and summer would be the best time to enjoy it.

Best Way To Reach Chichagof Island

Visitors can access the island by ferry, take a plane from Juneau, or stop at Icy Strait Point during an Alaska cruise.

Lopez Island, Washington

Tucked between mainland Washington state and the majestic Olympic peninsula lies Puget sound’s San Juan archipelago. The San Juan islands include vacation hotspots for ordinary Americans and Seattle’s elite. But take a ferry to the southernmost island, Lopez island, to discover a rugged island less curated for tourists.

Outdoor activities are among the most popular things to do on Lopez Island . You can explore tide pools at Shark Reef Sanctuary, hike to the wind-swept cliffs of Iceberg Point to watch bald eagles, or cool off with a dip in the calm waters off Spencer Spit State Park.

There are several ways to get to Lopez Island. Many travelers fly to Seattle’s Sea-Tac airport, rent a car, and drive to the ferry terminal that connects Lopez to the mainland.

For budget travelers or those who wish to explore the island by bicycle, private shuttles and public buses can bring visitors from Sea-Tac to the ferry terminal. With prior arrangement with one of the island’s bicycle rental companies, you can arrange to have a bike waiting for you at the ferry terminal.

If you’re looking for the best islands in the South USA, then you’ve come to the right place! In the southern United States, you’ll find tons of beautiful places for your next island vacation. One of our favorite things about exploring southern USA islands is that there are so many of them.

Each of them also has something unique to offer visitors. Most of them are also very easy to get to from some of the major cities in the south. They make a great day trip option from cities like Savannah and Charleston .

While you travel through the south, you’ll find plenty of east coast islands for you to explore. Whether you’re looking for quaint picturesque beach towns, tropical paradises, or a combination of both, there is an island in the south that’s perfect for you. Many of the best islands in the south are prepared for visitors year-round, so you’ll always find something fun to do there. Even if it’s not warm when you visit any of these islands in the southern United States, they have plenty of activities to interest you.

There are so many awesome southern USA islands. We’ve come up with our favorites and we think you’ll want to visit each one of them. So, let’s take a look at the 15 best islands in the south that you can visit without a passport!

Tybee Island, Georgia

Tybee Island is one of the barrier islands just off of Georgia’s coast. It’s actually a great day trip from Savannah Georgia . That’s because it is just 20 minutes away from downtown Savannah. The island has a small city, also named Tybee Island. In Tybee Island, the city, you’ll find tons of boutiques, amazing restaurants, and plenty of coastal charm. There are truly so many things to do in Tybee Island and you should make it a stop for sure!

One of the things that makes Tybee Island one of the best islands in the south is its beautiful beaches. It’s the go-to beach for those living in visiting Savannah for a reason. There are beautiful, clean sands with calm waters.

The highway that leads you to Tybee Island runs right along the beach line. But the beach is still peaceful and safe. If you’re visiting Savannah, we highly suggest at least taking a day trip to Tybee Island. This is truly one of the best beach towns in Georgia!

Dry Tortugas, Florida

The Dry Tortugas National Park is easily one of the best tropical places in the south. It is made up of a series of islands, called keys, just 70 miles west of Key West Florida. Since it’s a National Park, the only option for staying very nearby is to go camping. However, if you are willing to drive to the Dry Tortugas, you can stay in beautiful Key West.

While you’re visiting Dry Tortugas, you’ll find plenty of things to do. Like most National Parks, it has hiking trails. But you can also explore a historic fort, go snorkeling, or see the islands from a seaplane. You can also take a ferry to visit the other smaller islands that make up the National Park. It’s easily one of the prettiest islands off the east coast USA.

Galveston Island, Texas

In Texas, on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, you’ll find Galveston Island. Often just referred to as Galveston, the island is a resort-style island. It’s one of the best US islands in the south, partially because there are tons of activities. Galveston is one of the cutest beach towns in Texas and is a short drive away from Houston. It’s just a little under an hour away, so it’s a great day trip option.

The island is a popular Texas vacation spot. That, combined with the resort-style atmosphere, means it’s one of the best southern islands to visit with the family. It is home to some of the best beaches in Texas!

You’ll find fun attractions like the Galveston Island Pleasure Pier, the Moody Mansion and Gardens, and Schlitterbahn’s Waterpark. If that’s not your thing, Galveston is also full of beautiful historic buildings and homes. Most of them have been converted into museums that you can tour.

Hatteras Island, North Carolina

One of North Carolina’s barrier islands is Hatteras Island. It forms a bend at Cape Hatteras, which has the famous North Carolina Lighthouse. It’s one of the southern USA islands that makes up North Carolina’s Outer Banks as well. Hatteras Island has a rich history, especially when it comes to the first European settlers. The first English child born in the New World and the first flight taken by humankind took place on Hatteras Island.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Off the coast of Georgia is the stunning Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island is part of the Golden Isles, which is a string of Great Barrier Islands. The Golden Isles stretches from just outside of Savannah Georgia, all the way down to Jacksonville Florida. Along with being a Golden Isle, Jekyll Island is also considered one of Georgia’s Sea Islands. It’s very easy to get to and is just under two hours away from Savannah Georgia. That makes it one of the best day trips from Savannah .

Jekyll Island is known for a few different reasons. The island has beautiful beaches that are great for collecting seashells. While you’re on the beach, you can also see some of the most stunning sunsets. The sandy beaches are also great for spending the day and relaxing. But what Jekyll Island is most known for is the collection of massive ancient driftwood trees that dot the shore. It’s called Driftwood Beach, and visitors come from miles to see the unique beach landscape. It’s one of the coolest east coast islands.

Sanibel Island, Florida

Another great place for tropical vacations in the south is Sanibel Island in Florida. Sanibel Island is home to some of the best sunsets in all of Florida. You can easily reach this gorgeous east coast island by flying into Fort Myers and taking a 45-minute drive. There is also an option to get to Sanibel Island by boat.

Sanibel Island is another one of the best southern islands to look for seashells. The beach is full of a variety of shells. Many of them are also very unique, and sometimes hard to find at other beaches. So if you’re visiting, we definitely suggest combing the beach for shells. If you don’t want to search for seashells, spend some time on the white sandy beach or take a swim in the crystal blue waters.

Saint Simons Island, Georgia

If you’re looking for a more unique island off the east coast USA, try visiting Saint Simons Island. Saint Simons Island is off the coast of Georgia. What makes Saint Simons unique is that it is actually known for its salt marshes. While it does have some beautiful sandy beaches as well, visitors like to explore the salt marshes. While the southern USA islands often have marshy areas, Saint Simons Island in particular is known for its beautiful salt marshes.

While you’re there, you can visit the history museum that is on the island. It tells the story of the island’s Civil War history, the historic lighthouse, and its whaling history. From the lighthouse, you can also see views of Jekyll Island. The beaches are beautiful to relax on as well. At the northern end of the island, you can take a boat to Little Saint Simons Island . The smaller island is home to birds like the Spoonbill and Gannets.

Emerald Isle, North Carolina

Emerald Isle is actually a town on Bogue Banks Island in North Carolina. However, most people just associate the name Emerald Isle with the entire island. It’s not a very big island, but it is still a very popular island in the southern United States. Emerald Isle is also part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. You can get to Emerald Isle simply by driving a little under an hour from Jacksonville, North Carolina.

One of the most popular things to do in Emerald Isle is to go fishing on the Bogue Inlet Pier. The island also has beautiful beaches where you can relax and enjoy swimming. At the Emerald Isle Woods Park, you can play disc golf, go hiking, and there’s a dock. The park also has part of the North Carolina Birding Trail. On the Birding Trail, you’ll often see some rare or unique birds species that you can only find on east coast islands.

Crab Island, Florida

In Destin Florida, you’ll find Crab Island. Crab Island is the smallest island on this list, and it’s actually not really an island. It was at one time, but over the years, erosion has made it very small. The island was also created in the 1960s when the Army Corps of Engineers dredged the area. Crab Island was formed from that dredging and quickly became a popular place for Destin locals to hang out.

Crab Island is located in the Gulf of Mexico. So you’ll be able to enjoy the warm crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches that are popular in the area. All around the island, the water is shallow. So that makes it a particularly popular spot to hang out. Often boats come out to near the island, dock, and then people will spend the day hanging out on Crab Island. Because the waters are shallow, they are also even warmer than the surrounding ocean.

Sullivans Island, South Carolina

A beautiful beach that’s just a quick trip from Charleston South Carolina is Sullivans Island. Sullivans Island is actually part of Charleston County. To get to Sullivans Island from Charleston, it’s just a quick 20-minute drive. You won’t find any hotels on the beach though.

While you visit the island, you’ll get to enjoy wide open beaches. It’s also one of the quieter beaches and is often less crowded than some of the other islands near Charleston. On Sullivans Island, there is also a lighthouse. It’s one of the 11 lighthouses that you can find in South Carolina. The lighthouse is actually still in use by the Coast Guard, so you can’t tour it. But it’s still really cool to see.

Amelia Island, Florida

Even though its in Florida, Amelia Island is also very close to Atlanta Georgia . You can reach Amelia Island in just under 6 hours if you’re traveling from Atlanta. Its a popular tropical vacation in the south. You can often find visitors from both Florida and Georgia lounging on the beautiful sandy beaches on Amelia Island. Amelia Island has over 13 miles of beautiful beaches for you to explore and enjoy. Its easily one of the best islands in the south.

Amelia Island is probably best known for it’s golf-courses and high-end hotels. The hotels and golf courses make it one of the most popular islands off the east coast USA. Along with the high-end amenities, the beaches have their own set of amenities. The beaches often have bathrooms, with changing rooms and showers. They also typically have picnic tables and some even have piers you can walk on.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

One of the best hidden gems in the south is Dauphin Island in Alabama. Daphin Island is a popular east coast island for families looking for a great beach vacation. Dauphin Island is a little under 45 minutes away from Mobile Alabama. Its a popular tropical place in the south for those who are looking to escape the city for a bit.

Dauphin Island has the beautiful beaches that you’d expect to find in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s also a great place for catching a fishing charter if you’ve always wanted to fish in the Gulf. The island also has historic sites too. If you like birdwatching, we suggest a trip to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is one of the cutest beach towns in Texas . It’s in the Gulf of Mexico, just off of the southern coast of Texas. You can easily reach South Padre Island too. To get there, fly into the Brownsville Airport. From there, its just a 20-minute drive to South Padre Island. It’s one of the most popular islands in the southern United States because of it’s many resort like amenities.

Because South Padre Island is a resort-style island, you’ll find plenty of things to do there. The island is dotted with amazing resorts with gorgeous pools and beach access. You can also go horseback riding on the beach or visit the Sea Turtle Conservation Center. The island also has amusement parks, the stunning Gulf Coast beaches, hiking trails to explore, and so much more.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

One of the best islands in the south is Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. It has some of the most pristine beaches in the south and is known for being one of the most popular tropical vacations in the south.

Hilton Head is just a 2-hour drive from Charleston. If you’re staying in Savannah, it’s even closer, and takes just under an hour to get to. The island has beautiful beaches, of course, but it has a lot more to offer too. On top of the beaches, Hilton Head is known for it’s world-class golf courses.

In the city center of Hilton Head Island, you’ll find some amazing restaurants and unique boutiques to explore. The beaches themselves are great for biking on during low tide and there’s plenty of space to spread out. Hilton Head Island also has parks with great hiking trails to explore and there is even a lighthouse.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Ocracoke Island is one of the best islands in the south. But it’s not very easy to reach. The nearest city is Moorhead City, but even still, it’s a little over 3 hours away from Ocracoke Island. However, once you get to this beautiful island off the east coast USA, you’ll see the travel was worth it. Ocracoke Island is over 16 miles of undeveloped coastline that is uncrowded and pristine.

On Ocracoke Island, you’ll find the village of Ocracoke. In the village, you’ll find the historic Ocracoke Lighthouse that has been a landmark since it was built in 1823. The lighthouse overlooks the village and the Pamlico Sound. You can also explore the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum which is in a historic home from the early 1900s. It traces the islands history. While on the island, we also suggest taking some time to visit the tiny British Cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many WWII sailors. There’s a lot to do and see in Ocracoke Island, and that’s what makes it one of the best islands in the south.

Hilton Head Island

With 12 miles of beaches and 32 golf courses (about two dozen of the championship variety), Hilton Head, South Carolina , is well known. But don't let that dissuade you from visiting. While it's certainly no secret, Hilton Head remains picture-perfect and offers plenty of activities and great places to stay.

About 30 miles from Savannah, Georgia, and accessible from the mainland via a causeway, this Lowcountry barrier island brags of the warmest water on the Eastern Seaboard.

Pull yourself from the beach for a while and escape into nature. Embark on a gentle kayak paddle through scenic marshland or stroll along paved pathways and keep a look out for resident wildlife at the Audubon Newhall Preserve and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Santa Catalina Island

Known locally as Catalina Island, this rocky patch of land jutting into the Pacific some 29 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California, offers an easy escape from the city. Catch a one-hour Catalina Express high-speed ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point, or the Catalina Flyer catamaran from Newport Beach, both operating year-round. It's not uncommon to see dolphins following your boat.

On the island you'll find quaint towns, sandy beaches and a wealth of water activities such as parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours to reefs and shipwrecks and diving and snorkeling opportunities in the clear waters.

Visitors are not allowed to drive cars on the island, but you can rent a golf cart or a bike to explore the main town of Avalon and take Jeep and bus tours to see the interior. About 90% of the island is a protected nature preserve. For a workout, trek up 2,103-foot Mount Orizaba.

Mackinac Island

When you get off the ferry on this remote Michigan island in the Great Lakes, you might have the feeling you've been transported back in time. Victorian architecture abounds, and one of the popular modes of transportation on the carless island is horse-drawn taxis.

The hillside, Victorian-era Grand Hotel goes by the moniker of America's Summer Palace. It's certainly a jaw-dropping sight with its 660-foot front porch, and it remains a bastion of tradition where guests still dress for dinner.

About 80% of the island is protected as Mackinac Island State Park, adding to the utopian allure. Explore by bike or golf cart. Historic sites include Fort Mackinac, a Revolutionary War fortress that also played a big role in the War of 1812.

The island is in the Straits of Mackinac where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet. Ferry service from the mainland is from Mackinaw City (Lower Peninsula) and St. Ignace (Upper Peninsula). Both Mackinac and Mackinaw are pronounced "ma-kuh-naa."

Amelia Island

With its uncrowded beaches and sand dunes, Amelia Island is a tropical paradise off Florida's northeast coast. It's connected to the mainland by two bridges and you can get there in 45 minutes from Jacksonville, Florida.

Founded in 1562, the island is the only place in the country that has been under the sovereignty of eight different flags. You can learn all about its history on a horse-drawn carriage tour of the 50-block historic district in Fernandina Beach, where you'll also find antique shops and Victorian homes and inns — many on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 18-mile-long barrier island has 13 miles of beaches (with more than 40 public beach access points), golf with views of the Atlantic and resorts such as the splurge-worthy beachfront Ritz-Carlton, with its 18-hole championship golf course and sea-inspired spa. Nature areas include Amelia Island State Park, where you can ride a horse on the beach.

Martha's Vineyard

A 45-minute ferry ride from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the low-key, 96-square-mile island of Martha's Vineyard is full of New England charm and history.

Visitors find sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs overlooking the sea, charming inns, five lighthouses and such tranquil scenes as sailboats in harbors. Since Victorian times, affluent travelers have been drawn to the island.

What surprises many visitors is that outside the main towns such as Victorian-era Oak Bluffs, with its famous 1876 Flying Horses Carousel, and postcard-perfect Edgartown, much of the island is still rural and populated with working farms. Head to the West Tisbury Farmer's Market on a Saturday to sample local goods and to spot celebrities who frequent the island.

Another quintessential Vineyard experience is grabbing a lobster roll at Larsen's Fish Market to munch on Menemsha Beach — one of those good-to-be-alive moments.

Orcas Island

Located off Washington state and one of the San Juan Islands, Orcas Island is a ruggedly beautiful paradise with the bonus of thriving arts and culinary scenes.

Come to the island to bike, hike, go horseback riding, explore lush old-growth forests and swim in lakes — when you aren't dining on farm-to-table cuisine or checking out the galleries and boutiques in the historic village of Eastsound.

On a clear day from the lookout tower on top of 2,409-foot Mount Constitution, accessible by car or bike, you may catch 360-degree views of the Salish Sea, San Juan Islands and the mainland, including snowcapped Mount Baker and Mount Rainier.

You can get to the island on the Washington State Ferries system year-round from Anacortes, about 80 miles north of Seattle. The ferry ride is about 70 minutes (make reservations to bring your car).

Mount Desert Island

Accessible via a causeway, and the largest island off Maine at more than 108 square miles, Mount Desert Island, or what locals call MDI, is best known as the home of Acadia National Park and the small town of Bar Harbor, a longtime hangout spot for rich and famous New Yorkers. Quaint towns on the island also include Northeast Harbor, which Martha Stewart has been known to frequent.

Visitors come to admire the rocky coastline, eat lobster, go on whale-watching tours (to see humpback, finback and minke whales), shop at galleries and boutiques, see the leaves change color in the fall and take the perfect photo of a fishing boat loaded with lobster traps.

The national park covers a large swath of the island, with a 27-mile loop road. A key attraction is 1,532-foot Cadillac Mountain, the first place in the continental U.S. to see the sun rise. Visitors get up in the wee hours to catch the sunrise, a quintessential island experience (from late May to late October, a vehicle reservation is required to drive Cadillac Summit Road).

Sanibel Island and Captiva Island

These adjacent laid-back barrier islands off Fort Myers Beach, Florida, are such special places that the causeway out to Sanibel is sometimes referred to as the Path to Paradise.

Visitors come for the gorgeous, lightly populated beaches that are perfect places for strolling and shell collecting. Sanibel is the self-proclaimed seashell capital of the world, and you can find everything from tiny shells to conchs.

These islands, devoid of high-rises, offer plentiful paved bike paths and walking trails, as well as protected parks such as the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. On Captiva, connected to Sanibel by the 1918 Blind Pass bridge, golf carts are a primary mode of transport.

If you're lucky, your views may include dolphins popping out of the water, manatees and many species of birds. Mother Nature puts on an impressive light show at sunset — sometimes complete with the "green flash" phenomenon.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

While some beaches trade off their sunshine quota, Cannon Beach in the Pacific Northwest is unique by virtue of being a marvel to visit whatever the weather. This long sandy stretch of coastline is home to the dramatic Haystock Rock, a giant towering rock formation that’s accessible on-foot at low tide. Adjacent stone “needles”, tidalpools and flocks of seabirds combine to make this an atmospheric spot. While a summer stroll is always pleasant, visiting in winter, with crashing waves and brooding skies is an unforgettable experience. Outer Banks, North Carolina

Kauaʻi, Hawaii

Hawaii ’s beaches are renowned the world over for their soft, white sands and tropical waters, but KauaÊ»i is best known for its dramatic cliffs, canyons and lush rainforests. Known as the “Garden Isle” for its verdant interior, it’s an ideal destination for trekking and kayaking, as well as being home to some of Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches.

PoÊ»ipÅ« Beach Park is one of KauaÊ»i’s most popular beaches, with a wading pool for younger swimmers and the occasional Hawaiian monk seal appearance, but travellers who really want to escape the crowds should head to the remote Polihale Beach. Located at the end of a dirty road, it’s a whopping 17 miles long, making it the longest stretch of beach in the entire state of Hawaii. Expect giant sand dunes, desert cacti and jaw-dropping sunsets. Polihale is notorious for being a very dangerous beach for swimming, however, so swap the dip for a steady stroll along the sands.

Cape Charles, Virginia

On the National Register of Historic Places, Cape Charles has one of the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century buildings on the east coast. This quaint Victorian-era town is home to award-winning golf courses, two nature preserves ripe for exploration, and watersports galore, including kayaking, paddleboarding and jet-skiing. Plus, Cape Charles’ soft, sand beach is free to access, with calm and shallow waters making it suitable for waterbabies.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

A 15-minute drive from downtown Corpus Christi is Padre Island, the world’s longest undeveloped barrier island. This conservation area, stretching around 66 miles, is a major migratory bird route and home to 350 different species, with nearly half of all north American migratory bird species passing through here at different times of the year. Explore this charming stretch of coastline by kayak or canoe, watch sea turtles being released, or simply walk along this untouched stretch of coastline. Seal Beach, California

It’s also the start (or end) point of the San Gabriel River Trail, a 36-mile long cycle route that’s one of the best traffic-free spots in the valley for biking.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Skip the crowds at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and take the 40-minute ferry ride to the more secluded Dauphin Island. Known as the “sunset capital of Alabama”, this island is home to seven miles of white-sand beaches, great weather and crystal clear waters. Hike through the ancient maritime forest of Goat Tree Reserve, where you can spot birds including vireos, flycatchers and owls and sign up for a chartered fishing expedition, before feasting on crab and lobster at the acclaimed Skinner’s Seafood.

Wellfleet, Massachusetts

Wildcat Beach, California

Fancy a challenge? Rewards don’t come easy at Wildcat, with visitors required to hike five miles to reach this remote California beach, but it’s more than worth the trek. Short on time? Mountain bike on the Stewart Trail, before cooling off in the Pacific. This peaceful spot is home to seals, striking cliff views and some incredible sunsets. The Caribbean is a mosaic of diverse destinations, each with its own history, culture, and breathtaking scenery.

A treasure chest of over 700 islands, islets, reefs, and cays scattered liberally across the Greater and Lesser Antilles, this wealth of options can sometimes overwhelm travelers, spoilt for choice in this natural paradise.

Whether you’re a history buff, a sun worshipper, an eco-adventurer or simply looking to disconnect from the world, our pick of the best Caribbean destinations each promises a distinct and unforgettable journey.

1. Soufrière, St. Lucia

Best for natural attractions

This colorful waterfront town along the southwestern coast was originally the island’s capital before that designation went to Castries. However, it still gets top billing on any St. Lucian travel itinerary.

The primary attraction in the area is the Pitons, two soaring volcanic peaks that emerge dramatically from the seabed. The larger of the two, Gros Piton, is also the more manageable hike (Petit Piton is generally off-limits).

A delightful detour to Au Poyé Park at the base of the Piton, and just five minutes from the trailhead, rewards you with luscious ice cream crafted from local fruits.

If climbing is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other scenic spots, such as the more accessible Tet Paul Nature Trail – bask in unfettered views of these iconic volcanic plugs set against the cerulean blue seas. When you're finished exploring, rest your aching muscles in the rejuvenating Sulphur Springs , the remnants of a collapsed volcanic crater.

These mineral-rich waters, infused with magnesium and calcium, are believed to have healing properties and offer a unique and invigorating spa-like experience.

Afterward, cool off at one of several waterfalls that dot the landscape, including the Toraille Waterfall , Piton Falls , and Diamond Falls .

Planning tip: Climbing Gros Piton can take anywhere from three to six hours. Set off early when temperatures are cooler, and dress comfortably (no flip-flops!). Pack sufficient water and sunscreen.

2. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for history

The charm of Old San Juan lies in its blend of centuries-old architecture with the lively spirit of its people. The city center is a maze of buildings washed in bold hues, from maize yellow to cornflower blue, each adorned with intricate wrought iron balconies and heavy wooden doors.

Check yourself into the newly renovated Hotel Rumbao – it's strategically positioned within walking distance of practically every landmark and offers a respite from the city bustle.

A short walk will take you to the sprawling 27-acre Castillo San Cristóbal , the largest Spanish fort in the Americas, or to the Calle Fortaleza , a slate cobblestone road adorned with decorative canopies and one of the oldest and most photogenic streets in the area. A leisurely stroll along Paseo de la Princesa just before sunset reaps romantic views of the bay and the majestic Castillo San Felipe del Morro .

When it's time to dine, the in-house Island Kueros Bar & Kitchen beckons with a tantalizing spread, including the Signature Coquito French Toast, Torched Tuna Poke Pegaitos, and Coffee Rub Ribeye Steak.

Pop into Raíces along Calle Recinto Sur for their flavor-filled mofongo with churrasco and refreshing local fruit juices. Go early to beat the long lines and get your name on the list.

3. Les Anses d'Arlet, Martinique

Best for beaches

Les Anses d'Arlet, hidden away on the southern coast of Martinique , is a picture-perfect fishing community where time seems to flow as slowly as the gentle waves that lap its shores. Several beaches, each with their own distinct character, grace the coastal village.

Powdery blond sand frames the tranquil and gin-clear turquoise waters of Plage du Bourg. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the glorious Église Saint-Henri backdrop; hundreds of tropical fish swarm around a rock formation called “la kay” on the nine-foot-deep sea bed, making this an excellent spot for snorkeling.

A bit further north, Grande Anse ’s white sand and placid waters make it a popular tourist spot. It's the largest beach in Les Anses d'Arlet, with unimpeded views of Rocher du Diamant (Diamond Rock). Sip on a Ti Punch (the national cocktail) at one of the nearby small restaurants.

Neighboring coves Anse Noire and Anse Dufour present a peculiar contrast. The former's signature black sand is the result of the region’s volcanic past, while Anse Dufour's pale sand is a byproduct of eroded shells and corals just a few hundred meters away.

4. The Indian River, Dominica

Best for unwinding

The Indian River, flowing into the Caribbean Sea, stands out as the most celebrated of Dominica’s 365 rivers. The journey begins at the visitor’s center just outside Portsmouth, near the bridge, where you can arrange a guided boat tour.

The dense overhead thicket offering mere slivers of daylight and the tangled roots of Bwa Mang trees snaking along the riverbank evoke a cinematic feel.

The dramatic atmosphere may have influenced the area's selection as a “Pirates of the Caribbean” filming site. Typical stops on the tour include a visit to Cobra’s Bush Bar, home to the famously potent “The Dynamite” cocktail.

Stop at Madiba Beach Café , an outdoor haunt right on the sand. It serves fresh seafood, and the rustling waves provide a soothing soundtrack. Be forewarned: their homemade rum and raisin ice cream is positively addictive.

This lively fishing village transforms into a vibrant culinary hotspot every Friday and Saturday night, hosting the famous Oistins Fish Fry , where locals and tourists converge to feast on freshly grilled marlin, tuna, swordfish, lobster, mahi-mahi, and the legendary flying fish – a Bajan specialty.

Typical sides include rice, breadfruit, macaroni pie, and, of course, the local delicacy cou-cou (a thick paste of cornmeal and okra).

You can savor your meal on the water's edge and throw back a frosty Banks beer, accompanied by the rhythms of calypso and reggae, or see if you can triumph in a sure-to-be raucous game of dominoes.

On CNN's Best Towns to Visit 2024, Providence is near the top. Here's why.

Providence's quirky, artistic charm continues to make headlines.

Following a shoutout from Vogue Magazine, the capital of the Ocean State placed second out on CNN's 2024 list of America's Best Towns to Visit .

Providence resident Christine Chitnis – who wrote both CNN's and Vogue's articles – appears to be on a mission to spread the word about the city's ascension to cultural and creative capital, highlighting the thriving arts scene through museums and performance centers, architecture and the diverse culinary drawn from cultures around the world.

CNN's America's Best Towns to Visit is a list meant to provide readers with smaller cities that still have a big personality.

Why Providence ranked so high

The article dubs Providence "the city that moved rivers" - in reference to the infrastructure and architecture of the downtown waterfront created by the massive The Providence River Relocation.

The project took 30 years and redirected the Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck rivers to create new commercial real estate without impacting historic buildings, resulting in the downtown riverfront as it is today.

Regarding the city's well-known affinity for art of all kinds - be it installation or culinary, CNN summarized : "Downtown’s rivers have been dancing in the firelight of beloved art installation WaterFire for decades, and public art is everywhere. The city is also home to the renowned Rhode Island School of Design and its museum. Architecture buffs will find plenty to admire, and Providence’s culinary history (with top-notch seafood and Italian cuisine) and diverse restaurants mean you’ll be treated to a global feast."

For those looking for a bit of natural beauty, Providence maintains a wealth of green spaces, including Roger Williams Park, which covers over 435 acres, wrote Chitnis. Even here is saturated with art, as among the "manicured grounds, recreational ponds, public gardens," she said, are historical buildings such as the Museum of Natural History, Botanical Center, Temple to Music and of course, the Roger Williams Park Zoo.

How did CNN compile the list?

CNN Travel utilized their extensive network of contributors to gather nominations for the list. Editors went through the submissions, narrowing it down to 10 based on multiple factors.

Along with evaluating each location's attractions, food and drink, nightlife and cultural scene, they looked for a strong sense of sense of identity and a "wow factor," according to the America's Best Towns to Visit homepage. Proximity to other interesting travel locations was also considered, as well as travel logistics such as lodging options and the ease of getting there and around. The cities and towns ranged in population from 50,000 residents to about 225,000.
