A local’s guide to Menton, France: five great things to do

British aristocracy flocked here in Victorian times, but artist Fabien Gauthier is inspired more by its medieval buildings and the remnants of the swinging 1970s

A specialist in trompe l’oeil art and frescoes ancient and modern, Fabien Gauthier has lived in Menton since 1972

Le Petit Port , on a leafy square next to the harbour, is a great family-run restaurant whose owner, Gaby Santucci, I have known for 40 years. It specialises in local dishes such as courgette flowers stuffed with cod, giant scampi and octopus salad with porcini mushrooms. Being on the border, Menton’s cuisine has a huge Italian influence but we have our own version of Nice’s socca (chickpea pancake) and pan bagnat (a big bread roll filled with tuna, eggs, anchovies and tomato and soaked in olive oil). The streets around art-nouveau food hall Les Halles – a great place to buy Menton’s fragrant lemons – are home to street-food joints such as Sini , which sells pichade (tomato and anchovy tart) and barbajuan (chard and ricotta fritters). 4 rue du Jonquier

Inspiration

View of Menton, France, on a sunny day.

Menton was a simple fishing village before the British arrived in the 19th century and turned it into a health resort. European aristocracy built huge belle-époque palaces overlooking the sea but my inspiration comes from the friezes and artistic decoration on Menton’s older buildings. In the Basilica Saint Michel-Archange , there are some breathtaking trompe l’oeil paintings on the inside of the dome. The one above the Chapelle du Saint-Sacrement is for me the Rolls-Royce of fresco painting.

Neighbourhood

Menton is a calm, serene place, where you always feel as if you are on holiday. As an artist, it provides a very visual experience, full of reds, yellows, peach and ochre tones. I feel very attached to the old town. My first art studio was on rue Longue (the original Roman road), which is all ancient staircases, shutters and medieval doorways. At its southern end is Place du Cap, which is surrounded by little bistros with water fountains, and in Place aux Herbes nearby, site of the original market, you can still see the gently sloping stone slabs where traders laid out their vegetables, herbs and fish.

Green space

France, Menton, Serre de la Madone garden, nymph in the pond and Cyperus papyrus.

I’ve always preferred English-style botanical gardens, which leave some of the landscape natural and wild. Lord Hanbury built his Giardini Botanici just over the Italian border in Ventimiglia in the 19th century, and a British general created Menton’s Val Rahmeh gardens in the 1920s, but my favourite among Menton’s many gardens is Serre de la Madone , on the road leading up towards Gorbio. Major Lawrence Johnston filled his seven-hectare estate with tropical plants, parrots and wading ibises, all brought back from his travels. Visitors can wander among the magnolias (pictured below), yuccas, giant eucalyptus and a prehistoric-looking Nolina longifolia from Mexico, then climb the stone steps to a citrus grove, lotus pond and dense woodland beyond. 74 route de Gorbio

Menton’s seafront was strung with nightclubs in the 1970s. Mini Pub (it sounds a lot cooler in French) is one of the few survivors – I know because I used to work there as a barman. With its suede banquettes, soda siphons, framed photographs of Johnny Hallyday and Claude François and poster for Crazy Horse, Mini Pub is a padded-walled fortress of a bygone swinging France. The swing seats on its terrace look out across the marina, quayside and towards the Italian border. The porticoed Esplanade des Sablettes below was built on reclaimed land and is now popular for late-night gatherings, with a transparent lift to sea level, ice-cream parlours and a walkway under the palm trees. 51 quai Bonaparte

Just behind the promenade and within walking distance of the old town, the 17-room Pavillon Impérial hotel is in the former grounds of one of the huge belle-époque palaces on the seafront. It has a shady garden, a library and a bar. Doubles from € 57 room-only in October

15 Best Things to Do in Menton (France)

In the Belle Époque, Europe’s aristocracy fell head over heels for Menton, the last French Riviera resort before Italy.

Queen Victoria stayed in 1882 and the Imperial Russian expat community was so big they built their own church.

There are still lots of hints about this past, from the cemetery with the tombs of gentry on a roost high above the town, to a bewitching botanical garden adorning the mountains slopes that plunge to the sea.

These slopes are made for citrus, and Menot has more oranges and lemons than it knows what to do with.

So every February there’s the Lemon Festival, a public event even bigger than the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lets explore the best things to do in Menton :

1. Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

You may be sceptical about a botanic garden being top of the things to do at a French Riviera resort.

But Val Rahmeh is a little piece of paradise that has blessed the slopes above Menton for more than 100 years.

The garden is a living remnant of the days when only the nobility and ultra-wealthy had the means to retreat to the French Riviera.

Val Rahmeh was the handiwork of Lord Radcliffe, once the Governor of Malta, and he harnessed Menton’s  balmy microclimate to grow tropical and subtropical plants from Asia and South America.

He also had a thing for tropical fruit, so kiwis, avocados and bananas abound in Val Rahmeh.

Of all the species the rarest is the toromiro tree, endemic to Easter Island but now extinct in the wild.

2. Jean Cocteau Museum

Jean Cocteau Museum

We’ll soon see that the multi-talented Jean Cocteau spent a lot of time in Menton towards the end of his life, and the city now has the first and largest public resource on his work in the world.

The museum was established in 2011 after the Cocteau expert Séverin Wunderman had donated his multimillion-dollar collection of the artist’s works to the city in 2003. This titanic assemblage of 1,800 pieces makes up most of the museum’s exhibits, which, as you’d imagine for Cocteau are in all kinds of formats: They’re composed of graphic art, film and photographs, mostly taken while he was shooting the Testament of Orpheus.

3. Salle des Mariages

Salle des Mariages

In the late-50s Jean Cocteau was given free rein for two years to decorate Menton’s Wedding Hall in the Hôtel de Ville.

Everything was left to his discretion, from the faux-leopard rugs to the carved wooden doors, chairs and bronze candelabra.

But it’s the brightly-coloured murals that will grab you, and these are suffused with rich symbolism inspired by ancient mythology.

Some are accompanied with information plaques, but the way to get a full explanation is to show up for the guided tour on Thursdays or to get yourself an audio guide from the Town Hall’s reception.

4. Saint-Michel Basilica

Saint-Michel Basilica

Just looking at buildings like this sumptuous baroque church you’ll be left in no doubt that Menton was more Italian than French for most of its history.

Saint-Michel was commissioned by Honoré II of Monaco and wouldn’t be completed until the 19th century, although later architects remained faithful to the original baroque plans.

A trip to the basilica is best made first thing in the morning before things start to warm up, as you have to hike up a series of zigzagging stairways from Promenade de la Mer.

For a more adventurous route you can negotiate the corridor-like passageways and alleys that entice you up the hill from Rue Longue.

5. Old Château Cemetery

Old Château Cemetery

Even higher than the basilica is the site where Menton’s medieval castle once stood.

This is long gone, but was replaced by a cemetery with astonishing vistas of the city, port and the mountains that press Menton against the coast.

You’re at the resting place of many rich and aristocratic British and Russian holidaymakers during the Belle Époque.

One famous burial is William Webb Ellis, credited with inventing the game of Rugby in the early-19th century when he picked up the ball and ran with it during a football match.

6. Plage des Sablettes

Plage des Sablettes

Menton’s best beach is a small bay beneath the city’s basilica.

Les Sablettes is screened from the sea by Menton’s port and is bookended by long breakwaters.

Relaxing on this blend of shingle and sand you can gaze east at the villas perched in the mountains and identify Mortola Point, where France becomes Italy.

At Les Sablettes you can call on Palmes Beach, a diving and watersports centre providing trips to 30-odd dive sights in both French and Italian waters, including wrecks and epic drop-offs, or shallow coves for newcomers.

7. Musée de Préhistoire Régionale

Despite the name, Menton’s Museum of Prehistory deals with many different eras of the French Riviera’s past.

For instance, there’s a new and absorbing exhibition, “Trésors d’épaves”, about the history of shipwrecks on this coast, with pottery, glassware and weapons plucked from their watery graves.

But the main man at the museum is “l’Homme de Menton”, the fosslised body of an upper Palaeolithic (between 10k and 50k years old) cave- dweller, discovered in the Cave of Cavillon in 1872. The original is in Paris, but this museum has a complete cast of his body.

And finally, there are models, artefacts and reconstructions of local historic trades like olive pressing, lemon cultivating and fishing.

8. Plage du Fossan

Plage du Fossan

For convenience you can’t beat the beach next to Menton’s old town on Quai Général Leclerc de Hautecloque.

Plage du Fossan unfurls gently for almost half a kilometre on the Baie de Soleil, has both sand and pebbles and a strict no smoking policy.

The sea shares Nice’s pale tone, and Fossan Plage is completely free for the public.

If there’s one drawback it’s that if you prefer shade you’ll need to bring your own parasol.

But then again, when the sun gets too much you can always escape to the shelter of the swaying palm fronds in the park that traces the beach to the east.

9. Jardin Serre de la Madone

Jardin Serre de la Madone

Tumbling over nine hectares this park on steep terrain, just in from the coast, blends terraced sub-tropical gardens around reflecting pools and Mediterranean forest with umbrella pines.

Serre de la Madone was plotted by the rich American Lawrence Johnston, who had already made his name with a French garden at Hicote in Gloucestershire, England.

Here in the Gorbio Valley, out of the breeze and with lots of sunshine, Johnston picked a perfect patch for exotic plants to thrive.

Hedges and walls form boundaries between each garden containing bamboo, palms, succulents and a wealth of other exotic plants from across the globe.

10. Musée des Beaux-Arts

The lavish 18th-century Palais de Carnolès is a former summer residence of the Princes of Monaco, and has a considerable hoard of art for such a small city.

One person to thank for this is Charles Wakefield Mori, the curator for the National Art Museum in Monaco, who donated his personal collection of modern art to Menton in 1959. Pieces by Salvador Dalí, Chagall, Picasso and Francis Picabia are waiting for you, and there’s also a breathtaking sculpture garden that opened in the palace grounds in 1994. Modern and classical sculpture are sprinkled around a research garden, with 137 different citrus tree species.

11. Lemon Festival

Lemon Festival

Menton has been one of Europe’s big citrus producers since the 1400s but to experience the city’s devotion to lemons first hand, come to the Menton Lemon  Festival in February.

In terms of visitors it’s just behind the Nice Carnival, but ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, and runs for almost  three weeks.

Every Sunday chaos erupts in Menton, with dancing, musicians, lemon and orange mosaics and processions of lovingly-designed floats ten metres high, decorated with tons of lemons and created according to an annual theme.

In years gone by these have been “Tintin”, “Alice in Wonderland” or “Around the World in 80 Days”, and in 2017 it will be “Broadway”.

12. Herbin Confiturerie

Herbin Confiturerie

On an alley off Rue-Saint-Michel you’ll learn how the rich harvest of lemons and oranges is put to use.

Herbin is a family-run artisanal jam and preserve maker that opens up for tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30. The jam and marmalade craft was brought to Menton by the English aristocracy, and naturally the location couldn’t be better given the bounty of fruit every year.

Herbin uses around 400kg of fruit a day to make 1,500 individual pots, with some eye-opening flavour combinations like strawberry and basil.

You’ll be talked through everything by the owner Jean-Claude Bineau, who has earned the title of master jam-maker.

13. Église Russe de Menton

Église Russe de Menton

Just like France’s other resorts that lured the Russian nobility, Menton was endowed with a splendid Russian orthodox church in the 1890s.

The church has the typical onion dome, here painted a cobalt blue.

In the interior the showstopper is the iconostasis made from Tuscan carrara marble, with icons painted by Russian master Karl Bryullov in the Byzantine style.

The church is attached to La Maison Russe, a four-storey mansion set in lemon, orange and palm gardens.

This was actually here before the church and was a charitable foundation for sick and needy Russians on the French Riviera.

14. Marché des Halles

Marché des Halles

Head straight to the covered market hall on Quai de Monleon for your food shop or even just to soak up the noisy ambience.

Menton is fabled for the warmth and friendliness of its inhabitants, so don’t be surprised if you get a friendly welcome and are treated to big tasters by the stallholders.

From Tuesday to Sunday there’s a cornucopia of cheese, meat (cured and raw), fruit, vegetables and pastries.

And dig a bit deeper in Mentonnaise food culture and pick up the city’s famous preserves and other citrus fruit products.

15. Food and Drink

Socca flatbread

The cuisine in Menton is simple, accentuating the quality of the local vegetables without a great deal of elaboration.

Take the exalted starter, salade niçoise, with tomatoes, peppers, onions, black olives and either anchovy or tuna.

Socca flatbread couldn’t be simpler either; it’s just chickpea and flour mixed together with olive oil, then baked and seasoned with pepper.

Both are superb with rosé wine from Provence.

Last of all, Pichade Mentonnaise is something you may not have seen before.

This is a cheese-less relative of Italian pizza, with a tomato and onion sauce spread thinly over dough, topped with olives and anchovies and baked in a very hot oven.

Last stop on the Côte d’Azur before Italy, the seaside town of Menton offers a glimpse of what the high life on the Riviera must have been like before the developers moved in. With its sunny climate, shady streets and pastel mansions – not to mention a lovely old port – it’s one of the most attractive towns on the entire coast. Menton’s old town is a cascade of pastel-coloured buildings. Add a fantastic museum dedicated to the great artist and film director Jean Cocteau, as well as several excellent restaurants, and Menton really is a must.

The Complete Guide to Menton, France

tourist information menton france

Christian Heeb/Getty Images

Menton lies serenely on the eastern French Riviera, a stone's throw from the Italian Riviera. Menton is called "the pearl of France".

Menton's unique microclimate makes it a great place to grow its famous lemons. It's a place where folks crowd into outdoor seats in cafes in winter. There is sunshine for a vast majority of the year; the tourist bureau claims 316 days of sunshine.

While Menton might be considered an upscale resort town, it also could be considered the least pretentious. The restaurants are modest and mostly Italian. French Haute Cuisine is hardly anywhere to be found. Moroccan food? Certainly.

Menton, thus, is comfortable. It is less about expensive designer shops than it is about gardens, of which there are many. Exotic botanicals? Try the Jardin botanique exotique du Val Rahmeh just off Avenue St Jacques. Menton is a strolling city. Monet, Maupassant, Flaubert, Liszt, Katherine Mansfield, and Robert Louis Stevenson have strolled in Menton they tell me.

Jean Cocteau also strolled here, and now his work is the subject of two museums on the waterfront. A new one called the Musée Jean Cocteau Collection Severin Wunderman sits between the Public Market and the seafront and contains 1,525 of Cocteau's works; Cocteau also created his very own museum in Menton's 17th-century Bastion, which he restored.

If you crave the big city, frequent trains will get you to Nice in 35 minutes.

What to See and Do in Menton

Musée municipal.

North of the Hôtel de Ville you'll find Menton's Municipal Museum, which contains everything from modern art to a collection of prehistoric exhibits from the local area.

Hôtel de Ville

The attraction of town hall is the Salle des Mariages , decorated by Jean Cocteau and one of the "things you must see in Menton." The mayor requested the frescoes and Cocteau took two years painting them starting in 1957. He also had a hand in the furnishings you see in the room.

Salle des Mariages 17 rue de la République F 06500 Menton Phone: 04 92 10 50 20

Jardin Biovès and Jardin Botanique

Menton, with its fine weather, is known for its extensive gardens --and these are the top two. Adjacent to the Jardin Biovès at 8 Avenue Boyer you'll find the Belle Epoque Palais d'Europe , once a casino which now houses the Cultural Center and the Tourist Office.

Market Hall

The Market Hall is open every day from 6 am till noon: on Fridays, there is an antique market and on Saturdays a flea market in the parking lot next to the Market Hall.

There are a number of stands selling wine, cheese and bread inside the market, so you can pick up a fine picnic or even a full meal if you are self-catering.

Finding Jean Cocteau in Menton

Jean Cocteau worked extensively along the Cote d'Azur. In Menton, you can see the Salle des Mariages in the town hall as mentioned earlier, but there are two other venues in which the traveler can see works by Cocteau in Menton, the Bastion and the nearby Jean Cocteau-Severin Wunderman museum.

Le Bastion, Jean Cocteau Museum

The Bastion of Menton was built in 1619 by the Prince of Monaco in order to defend the Bay of Menton. Cocteau thought it would make a good museum space, and undertook renovations. Drawings, tapestries, watercolours, pastels, ceramics, faiences, mosaics made of pebbles and even the staircase was created by Cocteau.

Open all year round from 10 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Closed on Tuesday and holidays.

Jean Cocteau-Severin Wunderman Museum

Severin Wunderman was the sole manufacturer of watches for Gucci and had amassed a huge collection of works by Cocteau and others which were displayed in his California warehouse. The collection had outgrown the warehouse:

"Severin Wunderman's bequest includes 1,800 works, 990 of which are by Jean Cocteau, including drawings, painting, pebble mosaics, ceramics, tapestries, jewelry, photography, audio and cinema. 450 works are by Cocteau's friends including Picasso, De Chirico, Miró, and Modigliani" ~ Jean Cocteau: Road Trip .

The museum was opened on the 6th of November in 2011 in a low building near the old port at 2, quai de Monléon designed by Rudy Ricciotti.

The museum is open every day except Tuesday and holidays from 10 am to 6 pm.

Jean Cocteau on the Cote d'Azur

You can see other works by Jean Cocteau at Villefranche-Sur-Mer near Nice ( Chapelle Saint-Pierre , overlooking the old port) and at Cap d'Ail ( Centre Méditerranéen d'Etudes Française s - The Mediterranean Center for French Studies).

Places to Stay in Menton

Menton is full of hotels, and the competition makes them reasonable in price, especially in the offseason when the weather is still warm in Menton and freezing everywhere else. There are many hotels and vacation rentals available. Hotel Napoleon is one of the top-rated spots in Menton.

For those who wish a more rural experience along the Code d'Azur, try a vacation rental instead. Perhaps a modern condo with a great view is to your liking!

Menton: The Bottom Line

Menton is a great place to stay, especially in the offseason. If you're there in early spring, don't forget the famous lemons and the Lemon Festival .

Hearty travelers talk about walking to Ventimiglia or even Monaco along the coastal route. It's easier by train. If you have a car, Menton is not a bad place to use as a base for visiting some of the region's perched villages.

And we haven't even talked about Menton's famed beaches ! And there's even a casino. It's right on the beach.

All in all, there's a lot to love about Menton. It's a laid-back place to stay, a place to recharge your engines for further exploring of Provence , especially the region Menton occupies: Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur .

Guide to menton

The Complete Guide to Menton

Menton is a stunning seaside town in the south of France and our guide will help you plan your visit. Known as the pearl of France , the town is a literal stones through from the Italian border and is around the corner from the majestic principality of Monaco. We think it’s one of the most underrated towns on the Riviera and you need to visit! From what to see and do, how to get there and where to eat, our guide has you covered.

One of the Rivera’s Most Beautiful Towns

The history of the town goes all the way back to the Stone Age. Iin more recent times has been under rule from the Republic of Genoa and the Principality of Monaco. After some turbulent years, Menton was eventually annexed by France in 1860. In the 1900s the town became popular with British aristocrats on the grand tour .

tourist information menton france

The town has a distinctly Italian architectural feel to it and isn’t too dissimilar from the nearby town of San Remo . The old town has plenty of charming windy streets that lead up to the beautiful, Baroque basilica. Below the old town, you’ll find a beautiful bay lined with restaurants and bars with views up to the genuinely stunning rocky hills above the town.

Apart from its architectural beauty, Menton has a special subtropical microclimate which allows for it’s world famous botanical gardens that are dotted on the hillsides above the town. The warm temperatures extend all year around meaning the area can produce some stunning fruit and vegetables including the famous Menton lemons .

What To Do & See in Menton

Walk up to the saint-michel-archange basilique.

A fantastic way to explore the old town is to walk up to the ancient basilica. The baroque style basilique is one of the highest building’s in the city, perched right at the top of the old town. Easy to spot, the church is accessible via stairs from the main road that goes around the bay. Alternatively, you can walk up through the charming streets behind the church to explore the old town.

Saint-Michel-Archange Basilique menton

The basilica dates back to the early 1600s and was designed by Italian architect Lorenzo Lavagna . Entry to the church is free and is well worth a visit. Outside the church is a small square which is where the annual Menton Music Festival takes place during the summer.

Discover the Les Halles Food Market

At the bottom of the old town, you’ll find the Les Halles food market. This small market is filled with incredible food stands, bars and small restaurants. This is where the 3 Michelin Star Chef, Mauro Colagreco, gets produce for his restaurant Mirazur.

You’ll find some incredible local fish (that will have been caught that morning!) and lots of local fruits and vegetables. This is the perfect place to buy some of Menton’s famous citrus!

Walk Around the Plage des Sablettes

The Plage des Sablettes is the main public beach that you’ll find in the town centre. It runs from the old to the new port and it’s here where you’ll feel the very French-Italian atmosphere where friends and families meet for drinks and dinner. The man made beach has some great public facilities including showers, toilets and changing rooms. It’s also a perfect spot to enjoy a drink with epic views across the eastern edge of the town and the stunning hills above.

plage des tablettes

Discover the Botanical Gardens

Menton is home to a lot of incredible and world famous botanical gardens. Many are private and require advanced booking but some, like the Jardin botanique Val Rahmeh are open to the general public throughout the year. Entry to the multi-layered garden costs around €7 for an adult and can be bought on arrival. The garden has many exotic plants and flowers and features a beautiful central pond. You can find more out here .

Take a Full Day Tour with a Boat Trip

If you want to explore the city without worrying about organising tickets, visits and where to eat then a full day guided tour is a great idea.

You’ll be greeted at the train station upon arrival and go onto explore the Jardin botanique Val Rahmeh , a citrus orchard and a guided visit around the city.

We’ve partnered with Get Your Guide who offer this tour – find out more here .

What Else You Can Do

There’s plenty of private beaches on the eastern side of the Plage des Sablettes . You can rent sun beds for half or a full day and the majority have a full restaurant service at lunch time. If you’re staying in Menton you can also take a day trip over to Monaco by taking a 35 minute train. Here you can see the incredible marina (with all the superyachts!), check out the casino and have a coffee at the Café de Paris .

Where to Eat

There are plenty of fantastic restaurants in Menton to discover. Perhaps the most famous is the 3* Michelin Star restaurant, Mirazur. I would definitely recommend going for a special meal. It’s not cheap but you’ll eat at one of the top restaurants in the world whilst eating incredible local produce.

Mirazur gamberini prawns

On the cheaper side i’d recommend Le Petit Port which is a minute’s walk away from the old port. They serve incredibly fresh, locally caught fish and some great steaks.

My favourite hotel to stay at in Menton is the Best Western Prince de Galles hotel. South of the old town on the Promenade du Soleil , their sea view rooms (which I’d 100% recommend) have an incredible terrace overlooking the sea. It’a really comfy 4* hotel with modern rooms and amenities. Get the breakfast to your terrace and enjoy the view!

FAQ: Visiting Menton

How to get there.

You can get to Menton from Nice by a regional TER train which takes around 35 minutes and costs €6.40 one way.

Where to Park in Menton

If you’re driving then I’d recommend parking at the Interparking Vieille Ville – Sablettes . It’s right next to the old town, is extremely clean and is open 24/7. There are a lot of places so you should be able to find a parking space even during the summer.

  • Alpes-Maritimes Tourism

On the shores of the Mediterranean and on the Italian border, in the Alpes-Maritimes department, Menton , the capital of lemon, is classified as a “station d’intérêt touristique” (resort of tourist interest). The city enhances its heritage and offers a place of choice for culture through museums and art galleries . The contemporary art gallery of Menton is located in Palais de l’Europe, which used to be a municipal casino. Today, the first floor of the building, designed by the architect Tersling, houses the contemporary creations of the art gallery. During your holiday, discover, alone or with a guide, the picturesque old town which consists of narrow streets and squares cascading down to the sea. Tourists also flock to enjoy the beaches and their typical Mediterranean charm.

Events such as the French Riviera Garden Festival and the famous Lemon Festival are organized throughout the year.

The lemon is the symbol of the city. Legend has it that when Eve left the Garden of Eden, she took with her a golden fruit: the lemon. Fearing divine wrath, Adam asked her to throw the fruit she planted on the Garavan Bay, where Menton was born. Although citrus growing is rarer in the city today, the citrus garden of the Palais de Carnolès houses a fine collection of various varieties of citrus fruit.

The botanical heritage of the city holds an important place. The Mediterranean climate allows the development of many plant species such as palm trees, olive trees, etc. Discover the gardens of the city: Serre de la Madone, Val Rahmeh, Maria Serena and Fontana Rosa.

Menton is also particularly famous thanks to the works of Jean Cocteau . During his stay in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, he fell in love with Menton and decided to stay there regularly. At the request of the mayor, he undertook the decoration of the Wedding Hall. He then transformed the Bastion into a museum.

Bastion Museum

The Bastion Museum is the first museum dedicated to Jean Cocteau . The artist noticed the abandoned small fort in 1957. At the time, the mayor suggested making it a museum. Cocteau agreed to exhibit his works there on the condition that the collections would be changed regularly. Before his death, he supervised the entire creation of the museum and chose his works. His adopted son would complete the work according to the artist’s instructions. The monument was inaugurated in 1966. Through donations and acquisitions, the collections have been enriched.

Jardin du Palais de Carnolès

In the 17th century, Honoré II had a residence built in the center of a citrus grove on the plain of Carnolès. Its purpose was to have a garden to relax during his escapades in Menton. He also had orange trees planted in the shape of a star. The palace and gardens are listed as historical monuments and were bought by the city. Over time, the place has become a center for acclimatization and research. There are nearly 137 varieties of citrus fruits on the site today. The garden was awarded the Remarkable Garden label in 2005.

Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange

The Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange , located in the heart of the old town, is a jewel of Baroque art with its colorful façade, bell tower, pebbled square with the coat of arms of the House of Grimaldi and majestic ramps. Every year, the monument is visited by many tourists. The famous Menton Music Festival is held on the square in front of the basilica. The building is included in the “road of Baroque Nisso-Liguria.”

Wedding Hall

The wedding hall of Menton was painted by Jean Cocteau. The paintings represent the lovers of Menton as well as mythological figures such as Orpheus or Eurydice. It also fills all the empty surfaces with colored arabesques . The artist also chose the details of the decoration of the room such as chairs, carpets, lights, etc.

Monastery of the Annunciation

Last remain of the town of Podium Pini, the monastery of the Annunciation is a symbol for Menton. Located on top of a hill, 225 meters above the sea, it offers an exceptional panorama . The monastery was historically a chapel where the inhabitants went to pray to the Virgin, especially after Princess Isabella of Monaco came to town cured of leprosy. The premises were then occupied successively by the Capuchin Friars and the Apostolic Sisters of Héverlé.

Serre de la Madone

Just a few kilometers from the coast and beaches, Lawrence Johnston, a botanist created a remarkable garden in the first half of the 20th century. He selected many exotic plants, which he acclimatized to the mild temperatures and sunshine of the town of Menton. This garden is now a true haven of peace in the heart of the city, and a tourist destination which is both confidential and exceptional.

An Insider’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Menton

The ‘Pearl of the French Riviera’ is just as glitzy, chic, and stunning as you might expect from a town with such a name. Menton is the last large town before the French border with Italy and, though it has become more popular in recent years thanks to the rise of social media, still often remains overlooked in favour of more popular Côte d’Azur destinations. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best things to do in Menton .

things to do in menton

Introducing Menton

Why is menton the pearl of france, basilique saint-michel-archange, promenade du soleil, la plage des sablettes, vieux port de menton, walk up to the cemetery, follow in the footsteps of jean cocteau, serre de la madone garden, val-rahmeh menton botanical garden, marché des halles, meander through the pedestrian old town, pick up a souvenir, menton lemon festival, take a day trip to monaco, getting around menton, how to visit menton, where to stay in menton.

If you loved Nice but are looking for a smaller town with more of a village vibe and relaxed way of life, then Menton is calling your name. Boasting over 300 days of sun a year and said to be the warmest town along the French Riviera, this dreamy destination is best explored over several days so that you can truly relax and get to known Menton on a more local level.

Stroll through Menton and you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re wandering the streets of Italy. Well, there’s a good reason for that, and it’s that the French Riviera town actually only became part of France in 1860.

menton town centre

Prior to this, Menton had been part of Monaco and even Sardinia. In times gone by, Menton’s industry was centred around lemons and a tax imposed by Monaco on the lemon trade in the middle of the 19th-century was one of the primary reasons they seceded from Monaco in the first place!

Today, lemons and oranges are still a big part of life in the town and there is an annual lemon festival held every February. Citrus trees are scattered around the entirety of the town and its surrounding region, making for some pretty special spring blossoms during the earlier months of the year.

Palm and olive trees can also be found in abundance- this is one Mediterranean destination you won’t regret bringing your camera to. Indeed, this location is so romantic that it makes for the perfect honeymoon destination .

menton pretty streets

Located on the fringes of the French Riviera and famed for citrus (yes, like the fruit) , Menton is a charming pastel-hued former fishing port characterised by its stepped old town, as being the birthplace of Jean Cocteau, and because it’s the last major town in France before the border with Italy.

Menton is the pearl of France because of its sheer beauty. It’s the kind of destination that you’ll be thinking of for years to come after departure and is often touted by visitors as one of the towns that they would most like to return to along the French Riviera .

Best things to do in Menton

Like most towns in France, the most historic building in town is a Basilica which is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The ecclesiastical building is Baroque in style (the largest Baroque building in the region) and dates back to the early 17th-century.

Entrance into the church is free and is easy to locate as the bell tower is by far the highest building in town and can be seen from also every viewpoint within Menton. The building itself is based on the Annunziata of Genoa and a particular highlight are the 18th-century Damask drapes which were gifted to the Parish by Prince Honoré III on the occasion of his wedding.

Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange

One of the greatest introductions to Menton can be garnered by walking along the Promenade du Soleil (boardwalk of the sun in English) which hugs the coastline and offers beautiful views of the aquamarine water. The walk spans several kilometres, offering visitors the chance to see the coastline of Italy, the sea, and stunning vistas of Menton.

Promenade du Soleil

The main beach of the town is pebbled and is known in French as La Plages des Sablettes. Situated close to the Vieux Port of Menton, this beach is sheltered by rock jetties and boasts crystal clear waters that are popular for swimming in during the summer months.

Thanks to its ease of access from the town centre, this beach can get pretty busy during the day! You also don’t have to look very far to see another country as the border with Italy can be spied right from the beach!

La Plage des Sablettes

As well as meandering the sun-soaked streets, another great way to explore Menton is by heading to the Vieux Port (Old Port). This area of the town is right by the sea and you can spy dozens of boats bobbing up and down in the water.

Vieux Port de Menton

It may seem a little strange to list a cemetery as one of the best things to do in Menton, but once at the top you’ll soon see why it’s listed within this guide. After all, while the stairs can be a little tough to climb up, especially in the heat of the summer sun, once at the top you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the town and the sea beyond.

The cemetery of the old Château sits perched high above the rest of the town and is now the final resting place of several notable people, including William Webb Ellis, who was the founder of the game of rugby.

menton cemetery

One of the most famous residents of Menton in the decades gone by was Jean Cocteau, who is best-known for his poetry, though he was also a playwright, novelist, designer, and filmmaker. Today, you can learn about his life and works at a couple of museums in town; Jean Cocteau Museum – Severin Wunderman Collection and Museum Jean Cocteau The Bastion.

Jean Cocteau Museum - Severin Wunderman Collection

One of the more hidden gems to discover during a visit to Menton is the Serre de la Madone Garden, which is a quiet green space that was established between 1924–1939 and displays a number of exotic plants surrounding a serene pool. Please note that you’ll have to pay to enter.

Yet another delightful green space that’s worth checking out is the 19th-century botanical garden of Val-Rahmeh. This garden is located a short distance away from the fringes of the old town and boasts highlights such as unique cacti and exotic trees. You have to pay to visit the garden and it takes around an hour to fully explore.

Like most French towns, Menton has its own covered market (the majority of these were constructed during the 19th-century) which is open from Tuesday through to Sunday and is closed on Mondays.

The market operates between 7 AM and 1 PM, making it the perfect spot to pick up some picnic supplies in the form of freshly baked breads, locally sourced fruits, and delicious French cheeses. As it’s France, you can even pick up some French wine!

Truth be told, one of the greatest charms of Menton is to stroll around the town and allow the settlement to reveal itself to you. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes and pack a bottle of water as there are plenty of steps.

While exploring the town, you’ll soon notice that, although the houses are painted varying shades of warm hues, they all have fallow green shutters, which leads to a kind of harmony in the town’s vistas.

old town menton

Those who wish to bring something back from their trips either as a gift for friends and family or even a French souvenir for themselves will be spoilt for choice in Menton.

Lots of the main products you can buy are themed around lemons and so you can buy lemon liquors, soaps, creams, candles etc. There’s even lemon beer for sale!

Pretty much anything you can imagine to be created from lemons has been made and can be purchased in one of the many boutiques around town! One of the more popular stores in Menton is ‘Au Pays du Citron’.

As you might have guessed, almost every product is lemon-based, even down to a lemon-infused mustard! Visit during opening hours and you can even sample some of their lemon products, including lemon sorbet.

lemon history of menton

If you happen to be visiting Menton during the last two weeks of February then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Menton Lemon Festival , which is known as Fête du Citron and is a unique event around the world.

During this annual event, 145,000 kgs of oranges and lemons are used to create sculptures of cars, birds, floats which are used during a weekly procession and more! The sculptures are free to visit close to the train station and are beautifully illuminated at night.

How to Visit the Menton Lemon Festival (Fête du Citron)

Set alongside the glittering French  ‘Côte d’Azur,’  Monaco is a tiny principality defined by its rocky nature and miniature size. Best-known for being the home of the wealthy (around 30% of the population are millionaires) , it’s easy to see the best of Monaco in one day thanks to its tiny size and ease of access to walk around.

monaco port view

Thanks to its compact size, the easiest way to get around Menton is on your own two feet, so be prepared to walk a lot. Similarly, the old town itself can actually only be explored on foot due to the fact that the entirety of the maze of streets is set on a hill and you have to walk up and down steps and through passageways barely wide enough for a person to get around.

If you would prefer to see more of the seaside during your visit to Menton, then there is a cash only tourist train which departs from the outcrop next to Fossan Beach and takes you on a loop of the seafront.

menton on a cloudy day

Menton can easily be visited as a day trip from Nice , but I would personally suggest that it is better to stay overnight so as to enjoy the port and the old town without the crowds of the day trippers.

Although the pastel-hued settlement remains somewhat of an off the beaten path destination, it’s certainly getting more popular thanks to the rise of social media and so can be a little busy during the weekend and at peak season (i.e. during July and August).

menton building

Imagine waking up every day to the sound of lapping waves and the screeches of seagulls up above. This is the reality of life in Menton, even if you only opt to stay for a few days. During my stay on the French Riviera, I actually stayed in Nice, but not opting to stay in Menton overnight would be your first mistake. Here are some of the best places to stay in Menton :

Mid-range: Steps away from the Musée Jean Cocteau and not far away from the maze of streets that make up Menton’s old town, the Royal Westminster Hotel is set alongside the backdrop of the Promenade du Soleil. As beautiful on the outside as the rooms offered within, this hotel boasts a Belle Epoque facçade with some rooms offering sea views. Check rates and availability here

Luxury : Truth be told, one of the most luxurious hotels in Menton is that of Napoleon, a four-star establishment which is well-reviewed across booking and review sites. Close to the sea and featuring luxury amenities such as an outdoor pool, 24-hour reception desk, and some rooms offering beachside views, other highlights include free Wi-Fi and a bar on site. Check rates and availability here

15 Unforgettable Things to Do in Menton, France

' src=

Looking for the best things to do in Menton? I’ve got some great recommendations – read on for details!

tourist information menton france

Menton holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first village I visited on the French Riviera , way back in 2014, and Matthew and I totally fell in love with the colorful hues and charming little streets.

When I came back with my mom in 2023, after having visited many cities, towns, and beaches in southern France during the intervening years, I was delighted to discover that Menton was as magical as I remembered.

Menton is absolutely adorable, with warm-hued, pastel-colored buildings, an old town that’s built up the side of a hill with an imposing cathedral that dominates the top of the hill. There are gorgeous beaches, gardens aplenty, and pretty pedestrian streets.

You’ll also find a lot of lemon and other citrus trees and products in Menton. The village is known for its citrus production, and even celebrates with a Lemon Festival in February.

Menton is located on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, and is the easternmost city of the French Riviera before you reach Italy. In fact, you can see Italy from parts of Old Town Menton!

With its gorgeous landscapes and the variety of things to see and do in Menton, it’s truly an unforgettable city to visit on the Cote d’Azur.

tourist information menton france

In this post, I’m sharing the top things to see and do in Menton, as well as some helpful tips and practicalities for visiting!

1. “New Town” Menton

tourist information menton france

While Old Town and the sea get most of the attention in Menton (and rightfully so!), the “New Town” area that’s near Old Town is also really beautiful and has some fun things to see and do.

Plus, whether you take the train in or drive yourself, you’ll be walking through this area to get to the Old Town, so it’s definitely worth stopping by some of the most beautiful spots!

tourist information menton france

Make sure you walk down Rue Saint Michel, a pedestrian street with a lot of shops and boutiques. This is a great place to shop for lemon products – a Menton specialty!

tourist information menton france

The Place aux Herbes is a charming square with restaurants and a little carousel. The gardens by the Mairie de Menton are lovely (more on the gardens below), and I particularly enjoy walking past the clay tennis courts at Place des Victoires. Clay tennis courts just scream “Provencal living” to me!

2. Wander Through Old Town

tourist information menton france

One of the top attractions in Menton has to be Old Town (or Vieille Ville ). Menton’s Old Town is absolutely picture perfect, in various shades of pinks, reds, yellows, peach, and tan, intermixed with cobblestoned streets and walls.

Potted plants dot the streets and you’ll discover little archways and adorable corners tucked away all around the Old Town.

tourist information menton france

Rue Longue is the “main street” that goes through Old Town, and is the closest street to the sea. This street is a little bit wider and is so, so charming. This street will also intersect the zig-zag stairs up to the basilica (more on that below).

tourist information menton france

From Rue Longue or the square in front of the Basilica, there are multiple streets leading up and criss-crossing through the rest of the Old Town. You’ll find narrower streets and alleys as you go deeper and higher into Old Town.

tourist information menton france

The cemetery, basilica, chapel, and zig-zag street that we’re discussing in the following sections are all in the Old Town of Menton.

3. Cimitière du Vieux Chateau

tourist information menton france

The Cimitière du Vieux Chateau, or the Old Castle Cemetery, is located at the very top of the hill of Old Town Menton, as the name suggests, was built on the ruins of an old castle.

Today is a beautiful resting place for the inhabitants of Menton, as well as some foreigners of minor renown (for example, William Webb Ellis, the inventor of rugby, is buried here).

tourist information menton france

This is a lovely place to visit, as the views are spectacular. You can easily see down the coastline to Italy, and the tombs are often large and ornate, and decorated with statues, busts, and medallions.

Hours : 7am-7pm April to October, 8am-5pm November to March

4. Basilique Saint-Michel Archange

tourist information menton france

The Basilica of Saint Michael Archangel is the imposing church that dominates the skyline of Menton and stands proudly over the city. This basilica, constructed in the late 1600’s, has a similar golden hue to the rest of the city, a tall steeple, and an ornate interior.

tourist information menton france

Stopping in the square to admire the church (and visiting the inside if it’s open) is definitely a must-do in Menton.

5. Chapel of the White Penitents

tourist information menton france

Just next to the Saint Michael Basilica is the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the seat of the Brotherhood of the White Penitents. This brotherhood was established in the Middle Ages by laymen concerned with doing good deeds and caring for the poor and needy.

Though a slightly smaller structure than the basilica, this chapel is no less grand and ornate, with an intricate and beautiful façade. And the interior is even more beautiful – the walls are painted red, the floor a black and white tile, and the ceilings are covered in gold leafing.

6. Zig Zags down to Street

tourist information menton france

One of the most unique aspects of Menton and its old town are the zigzagging stairs leading from the street level up all the way up to the square in front of the basilica.

These stairs fit in seamlessly with the Mediterranean vibes of the city and call even more attention to the grand basilica at the top of the hill.

tourist information menton france

7. Marché des Halles

tourist information menton france

The Les Halles market is a daily produce and Provencal goods market that’s located in a historic building near the coast. The fruits and vegetables are so fresh and juicy at this market, and you can find all sorts of fun and yummy treats to bring home with you.

Keep your eyes out for lavender products, dried herbs, anything made of citrus, olives and olive oil, and locally made jams and honey. This is a great place to pick up an authentic souvenir from southern France!

  • Hours: 7am-1pm, closed Monday

8. Plage des Sablettes

tourist information menton france

The Plage des Sablettes beach is one of the absolute best beaches on the entire French Riviera (and I’ve seen my fair share!). Old Town is the backdrop for this idyllic beach, where you can enjoy crystal clear, clean water.

A human-made jetty protects a large section of the beach and swimming area, creating calm, protected water that stays fairly shallow all the way out to the rocks.

The beach itself isn’t exactly sandy, rather, it’s made up of really fine pebbles. Honestly, it’s not bad – there are a lot of truly rocky beaches on the Cote d’Azur, and I felt like I could walk across this beach in bare feet just fine.

Finally, there are restaurants and shops along the promenade just behind the beach for when you need a snack or full meal.

The whole set is just lovely . I truly cannot gush more about how perfect Plage des Sablettes is!

Note : There are other beaches in Menton. Notably, Plage du Fossan is just around the corner from the Old Town and is within easy walking distance of all the sights in this post, but it’s just not nearly as pretty as Plage des Sablettes. I really would prioritize coming to this beach.

tourist information menton france

9. Old Port + Harbor Rocks

tourist information menton france

For what is probably the most picturesque spot in Menton, you can actually walk out on the Quai Impératrice Eugenie and then onto the rocky jetty, discussed in the previous section, that shields this cove by Plage des Sablettes. Truly the views here, looking back at the town, are unmatched.

There are a lot of spots along the rocks where you can sit and dip your feet in the water. We sat here for a long time, just enjoying the sun, the breeze, and taking in the view.

10. Walk the Promenade

tourist information menton france

Between the Old Town and the Plage des Sablettes beach is the Quai Bonaparte road, which continues east to become the Porte de France. A lovely, wide, pedestrian promenade lines this street, which offers access to the beach and incredible vistas along the way.

You’ll walk this way to get to the Botanical Garden (next on the list), but it’s worth walking down just for the vibe.

Visit the Gardens of Menton

Besides the lemons, the colorful houses, and the fantastic interaction between the town and the sea, Menton is also known for her beautiful gardens.

The mild climate and sunny weather of Menton (which is hotter and more humid than other parts of the coast) is very conducive for planting and growing, which attracted many botanists to the city starting in the 1700’s.

Today, gardens dot the city and area around Menton, some of them open to the public. You can’t visit Menton without stopping in at one of her famed gardens!

11. Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh

tourist information menton france

The Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh is an easy 15-minute walk from Old Town and is a favorite in the city. This lovely garden was developed and cultivated starting in 1905 and holds over 1700 varieties of Mediterranean and tropical plants.

tourist information menton france

You’ll walk around the exterior of the villa and then on a designated route through the gardens and grounds, where you’ll see all sorts of unique flowers, yucca plants, fig, olive, palm, and even avocado trees. Stroll past the ponds and coastal overlooks as you discover the garden.

  • Hours : April to October: 9:30am-6pm, November to March: 9:30am-5pm, closed Tuesdays
  • Entrance Fee: €7 for adults, reduced fees for children and seniors

12. Jardin d’Agrumes du Palais Carnolès

tourist information menton france

The Jardin d’Agrumes is a small, free, public garden that surrounds the former palace of the Prince of Monaco. The entire garden is filled with 137 varieties of citrus trees – including orange, bitter orange, kumquat, grapefruit, and lemon.

13. Farther Out Gardens

There are other gardens in Menton, but they are farther out from the city center and require either a car or a fairly long bus ride. If you have a car, I would definitely consider visiting the following beautiful gardens:

  • Serre de la Madone: A charming garden filled with unique plants and beautiful blossoms. Closed Monday
  • Les Colombières : This garden is filled with mythological buildings and lovely landscape architecture. This garden is only open with a guided tour.

14. Smaller but Still Pretty Gardens

There are also a few small gardens right by the city center! These are truly tiny spots but are still very pretty and are a nice spot to stop by as you explore Menton.

  • The Square in Front of the Mairie de Menton : The Town Hall is where the mairie (mayor) of Menton works, and the gardens in front of the grand building are worth a stop. There’s a fountain, lots of trees and greenery, and a few pergolas with benches to relax in.
  • Jardin Du Campanin: This small garden is along the coast and adjacent to Old Town and features some benches and a nice tiled fountain.
  • Parc Plage de Fossan : A little park along the coast of Menton near the “New Town” and Plage de Fossan. The best feature is a really fun pirate-ship-like playground for children.

Practical Information

When to visit.

Menton is a beautiful location all year-round, but there are pros and cons to visiting in different seasons. In winter, there are very few visitors, but the weather isn’t conducive for swimming. In February, the Lemon Festival takes over the city for 3 weeks, which is a really fun event but brings heavy crowds.

Summer is delightful, with hot weather and warmer sea temperatures, but with that of course comes high crowds. September and into the beginning of October is really nice, as the weather stays warm but crowds start to dwindle.

Many of the gardens, the museum, and the market are closed Monday or Tuesday, so if these are important to you, consider visiting on a different day of the week.

Finally, if your schedule allows some flexibility, I think it’s worth trying to visit Menton on a sunny day, when the colors of the town and the sea are bright and vibrant. (Other villages, like Eze or Saint-Paul-de-Vence, are much more conducive for cloudy or rainy days).

How to Get to Menton

The easiest way to get to Menton is by taking the SNCF train that runs along the coast. If you’re staying in Nice , Cannes, Antibes, or Monaco, you can easily pick up the train and take it over to Menton for just a few euros.

Note that you want to get off at the Menton train station, not the Menton Garavan station.

Alternatively, you can also easily drive yourself to Menton – there are a few parking lots near Old Town, such as this one .

How Long Do You Need?

You want at least a half day to explore Menton, and you could definitely spend a full day here. If you want time to relax on the beach, you could even spend a couple of days (or more) in Menton.

Where to Stay in Menton

While many people choose to visit Menton as a day trip, staying in the city is also a great option! You can soak up the atmosphere and quieter streets in the mornings and evenings when the day trippers have left and have plenty of time to relax on the beach.

Plus, while Menton is on the very far edge of the Riviera, since it’s on the main train line, you can easily get around to other villages and cities you may want to visit. Which brings me to my next point…

Where Else to Visit on the French Riviera

After you’re done visiting Menton, there are a whole host of other great cities and villages to visit on the French Riviera . The tiny country of Monaco is very close and a favorite, and I also like the tiny French village of La Turbie , which has a massive Roman monument and incredible views down over Monaco.

Eze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence are the most quaint, adorable villages filled with cobblestoned streets and art galleries.

Nice is my favorite city on the French Riviera and cannot be missed, but the nearby village of Villefranche-sur-Mer is just delightful, and the coastal walkway on Cap Ferrat is a true hidden gem.

Farther down the coast, Antibes is a vibrant, historical city, Cannes oozes glitzy luxury, and Grasse is the home of French perfume, where you can visit perfumeries and even make your own scent!

I’ve visited each of these cities and villages and loved them all.

What to Do in Menton, France

Menton - French Riviera

Menton is easy to explore on foot. Most sights and Menton things to do are concentrated in the Old Town, between the sea and the rail tracks.

1. Explore the Old Town

tourist information menton france

Menton is the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and relax, and the Old Town is the ideal place to do that. Menton’s historical center is home to a maze of narrow, steep medieval streets and roads that echo the pirates that founded the town in the 13th century.

Menton’s Old Town offers a concentration of seven centuries of history, marked by famous architects like Charles Garnier, Adrien Rey, and Alfred Marsang. The baroque buildings, in particular, are remarkable, especially around the Parvis Saint-Michel.

2. Enjoy Menton’s Gardens

If you’re wondering what to do in Menton, then you may not think about the local gardens. But with its balmy microclimate, Menton has some stunning gardens worth exploring. This includes the botanical garden Val Rahmeh (Avenue Saint-Jacques, Menton), a must-see in Menton for over 100 years and created by the former Governor of Malta.

You should also try to see the rare plants of Jardin Serre de la Madone (74 Rte du Val de Gorbio, pictured above), the antique-inspired house and garden at Jardin des Colombières (312 Rte de Super Garavan, Menton), and the romance of Jardin Fontana Rosa (6 Avenue Blasco Ibanez, Menton) with its Spanish accents.

3. All Citrus at Menton’s Lemon Festival

Lemon Festival Menton

If you are looking for places to visit in France in winter , don’t miss Menton and its Lemon Festival, which usually occurs during the second half of February.

For centuries in Europe, Menton has been famous for its lemons: very bright, yellow, and elongated fruits prized by chefs for their rich essential oil.

The  Fête du Citron (Menton’s Lemon Festival) takes place every February, and it involves giant sculptures of lemons and other citrus fruits. One of the most popular festivals in France , the lemon displays are also accompanied by parades, shows, music, and dances, and it’s one of the Menton highlights.

4. Visit the Basilica of Saint-Michel Archange

tourist information menton france

A visit to the Basilica of Saint Michel Archange (Place de l’Église, Menton) is one of the best things to do in Menton, and it reflects the city’s Italian history. A jewel of Baroque architecture, the Basilica was commissioned by Prince Honoré II of Monaco in 1619, with consecration in 1675. The façade, however, was not completed until the 19th century.

The Basilica is accessible from the seaside by majestic stairs, and it looks best in the morning when the weather is cooler and tourists haven’t arrived yet. The building has a unique bell tower, a façade that’s simply stunning, and a beautiful ceiling mural on the inside.

5. Admire the Belle Époque Villas

tourist information menton france

Menton is filled with elegant Belle Époque villas. Belle Époque is the name given to a period of French and European history between 1871–80 and the beginning of World War I in 1914. The villas left behind by the wealthy aristocrats from this era are some of the best things to see in Menton.

Beautiful and ornate, the villas are spread throughout the town of Menton, and many of them are within walking distance of the city center and offer lovely views.

6. Visit the Museums Jean Cocteau and Le Bastion

tourist information menton france

Jean Cocteau is an emblematic character of the Côte d’Azur. He came to Menton for the first time at 22, and he returned very often. In Menton, he decorated the Sale des Mariages in the town’s City Hall.

The Musée Jean Cocteau – Collection Severin Wunderman (Quai Monléon) is one of the top Menton attractions. It celebrates the work of multi-talented French poet, novelist, filmmaker, and visual artist Jean Cocteau and is the largest public resource of his work. The museum opened in 2011 thanks to the will of Séverin Wundermann, a great collector of Cocteau’s work. Works by Cocteau’s friends complete this artistic universe: Picasso, Modigliani, De Chirico, Miro, Foujita…

The Musée Jean Cocteau – Collection Séverin Wundermann is also worth seeing for its architecture (by Rudy Ricciotti), which looks like a thick concrete shell pierced by faults with irregular contours. The Museum is currently closed due to renovation work.

While working on the decorations of the Salle des Mariages, Cocteau was charmed by an abandoned 17th-century fort located nearby. The mayor at the time suggested making it a museum of his works. The artist accepted, and he restored and redecorated the small fortress. The Musée Jean Cocteau – Le Bastion (Quai Napoleon iii, open from Wednesday to Monday) now hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to the artist. It has become an essential stop on the discovery tour of Cocteau’s work in Menton.

7. Spend a Relaxing Beach Day

Menton - French Riviera

There are many things to see in Menton, but the city is also home to lovely beaches if you need a break from Menton sightseeing.

Relaxing on one of the many beaches is one of the best things to do in Menton, France. Menton has both sandy and pebbly beaches, and they’re supervised in the summer. The most popular beach in Menton is Plage des Sablettes , located in a small bay beneath the city’s basilica and with views of the villas in the east and Mortola Point. Plage des Sablettes is considered one of the best beaches on the French Riviera .

But if you’d prefer quieter beaches, then try Plage de Fossan , a pebbly beach that’s great for families, or Plage Rondelli , which is sandier and has some great beach bars.

8. Visit the Cimitière du Vieux Château

tourist information menton france

If you walk uphill from Menton’s center, then you’ll arrive at the Cimitière du Vieux Château (Mont du Souvenir, Menton), the town’s cemetery. The site of Menton’s cemetery was once home to a medieval castle, hence the name. The castle is long gone, but the site still has fantastic views. When you stand up there, you can stare across the city’s terracotta rooftops to the mountains and along the Riviera coastline.

Numerous wealthy Russian and British aristocrats are buried in the Cemetery du Vieux Château, and it’s filled with beautiful carved stone tombs and sculptures. The cemetery is divided into terraces that are dedicated to different nationalities and regions. Some highlights are the Russian terrace, with the graves of princes, and the British area where you’ll find the tomb of the supposed inventor of rugby, William Webb Ellis.

9. Explore the Colorful Marché des Halles

tourist information menton france

If you wonder what to do in Menton, France, related to food, the Marché des Halles (Rue Pelisson) is a good place to start. Located between the fishermen’s port and the Baroque Quarter, this local market is vibrant and busy and is the acknowledged gastronomical hub of the city.

The Marché des Halles is full of the sights, smells, and tastes of the South of France, which is why it’s one of the top Menton tourist attractions. The Marché des Halles is open year-round until the early afternoon (closed on Mondays) and offers a range of fresh produce and local products.

10. And Taste Menton’s Local Specialties

Socca Nice

Among the best things to do in Menton is to try its cuisine, a perfect mix of classic Provençal flavors and original dishes with Mediterranean zest. Food in Menton is very similar to food in Nice (socca, bourride, soupe au pistou, etc.), plus some local specialties.

Menton is the city of lemons, so to immerse yourself in its culture, you can taste lemon in all its forms . Lemon is used in a Menton apéritif, a lemon liqueur similar to Italian Limoncello. Lemon is also used in recipes for vinegar, tapenade, jams, chocolates, and oil. For dessert, we recommend Les Sablés au Citron de Menton (Menton’s lemon shortbreads); they are delicious!

Pichade is a kind of anchovy pizza typical of Menton that can be enjoyed as a starter, hot or cold! It is a variation of the Pissaladière Niçoise, which is distinguished by the addition of tomatoes.

Barbajuan is similar to Indian samosas – small brick sheets stuffed with meat. In Menton, it is a ravioli stuffed with a vegetable typical of the region, chard.

Last but not least, don’t miss the homemade jams by Maison Herbin (2 Rue Palmaro) made from local citrus (lemon-lavender, sweet orange, fig-orange blossom…). You can taste the jams on-site before purchasing personalized jars. They are a real pleasure for the eyes and senses and also make a great souvenir!

What To Do in Menton – The Ultimate Day Trip Guide

Menton, France , is arguably one of the most picturesque towns along the Cote d’Azur. With the colourful facades along the beachfront and the quiet and narrow alleyways of the old town the town has a lot of character. Taking a day trip to Menton is the perfect way to get a feel for the city, and easy if you are staying in one of the other coastal towns! In this one-day itinerary for Menton I will take you through all the best things to do and how to spend your one day to see the best of this beautiful seaside town.

We took a day trip to Menton while spending 7 days in Nice . This town was what made us book the trip in the first place – I had it on my bucket list for years after seeing pictures of the beachfront and knew I would love it! When it came down to it, the one day we spent in Menton was one of my favourite day trips. This was mostly because it was so relaxed. I loved strolling around the quiet old town, spending a few hours sat on the beach, and exploring the village with no real time pressure to see everything. Menton is quite small – especially the older more touristy part – so it is the perfect place for a slow beach day!

Get to Know Menton: The Capital of Lemon

Things to do in menton on a day trip, tours and activities, how to get to menton, things to do in menton: a day trip guide.

The more time you spend in the South of France, the more interesting you will discover the history of the area to be. Menton, now one of the towns on the border between France and Italy, has only been French since 1960, previously being ruled by neighbouring Monaco.

Known for its microclimate, with around 316 days of sunshine a year, Monaco today is often referred to as “the Pearl of France”, or “The Capital of Lemon”. The latter referring to the warm temperatures perfect for growing citrus fruits – namely lemon. Lemon is today the towns symbol, and you will see this as you wander around the town. Souvenirs covered in lemons, lemon cakes, and the annual lemon festival which takes place in February and March each year.

Explore the Historic Quarter

The historical quarter or Menton, or the old town, is where the magic of the city really lies. Nestled into the narrow alleyways, hanging bridges and climbing plants, this part of the city is special. Menton is known for the beautiful waterfront view, colourful old buildings lined up against the water, but as soon as you step a few streets back you have it all to yourself. While there’s nothing specific to do in the Historic Quarter but explore, there are a few beautiful spots worth seeking out.

Les Rampes Saint-Michel

Les Rampes Saint-Michel, also known as Escaliers, is the lemon-coloured stairway that leads up towards Menton’s Basilica and the historic quarter. A popular photo spot, the geometric shape and bright colour of the stairs is one of the most visited spots in the city. Walking from Plage des Sablettes to the old town via Escaliers is a must at some time during anyone’s Menton day trip.

Basilique Saint-Michel Archange de Menton

Built in the 17 th century and renovated in 2006, the Basilica of Menton is a fabulous piece of baroque style architecture that links the old Menton with the beach town it is today. The terrace looks out over the beach, with swimmers and restaurants sprawled out over the sand, while the interior is classic, with beautiful ornate architecture and frescos lining the ceiling.

Spend some time on Menton’s Beaches

As I mentioned before, Menton is the perfect beach destination. Being a coastal city, the town is surrounded by different beaches, all with their own specialities. The most popular of the beaches is Plage des Sablettes, the calm sandy beach just below the historic quarter. It’s here that you can swim with the picturesque waterfront view behind you (one of my top moments during our 7 day French riviera trip ).

Along the coast you also have Plage du Casino, Plage de Fossan, and the smaller Plage de Garavan. I would say that if you are just making a day trip to Menton then I would focus on spending time on Plage des Sablettes and maybe visiting one other beach, but if you are spending a few days there then of course it is a great opportunity to check them all out!

Tip: The sunset is a beautiful time to swim at Plage des Sablettes. At this time of day, the beach is a lot calmer, and the water turns a magical colour in the reflection from the sun.

Explore the Cemetery of the Old Château

Menton’s cemetary holds a wealth of history, with the old gravestones taking you back to all the residents that have lived in the area throughout time. Walking up here from the old town only takes a few minutes, and not only is there a great view of Menton from here but a chance to explore the past.

Staying longer? Here are all your best hotel options in Menton.

Take in Menton from the Viewpoints

Menton is a city with many viewpoints – whether you are looking for the perfect place to see the seafront, or something higher up looking out over the Mediterranean. A few I recommend are below. If you click on the link, it will take you to the map locations!

Point de vue du Port : If you cross the road from the cemetery, you will find Point de vue du Port, a great viewpoint with views over the whole old town. The walk up is not difficult if you cut through the old town. What I love about this viewpoint is the view over the uneven tiled rooftops in contrast with the blue waters.

Vue Panoramique de Menton: If you have seen any photos of Menton you will probably be wondering where the best spot to see the iconic waterfront is, and this is that viewpoint. To get here, you will want to walk down to the beach and down Quai Impératrice Eugénie. This is a good spot, or you can scramble over the breakwater for a more direct view.

Tip: If you want to take photos of Menton from here then I recommend trying to get there in the morning. The sun sets behind the town so the light can be a lot harsher in the afternoons. Alternatively, sunset and early evening is a great way to capture the lights.

Eat some local delicacies

Menton: The Capital of Lemon. In this sleepy town you will find lemon flavoured everything – from ice cream and desserts to ravioli and limoncello. As well as lemon flavours, there are a few other traditional foods to try while in Menton and the French riviera.

  • Sugelli: A unique type of homemade pasta.
  • Barbajuans: Finger food fritters stuffed with Swiss chard, rice and ricotta.
  • Pistou: A traditional variant of basil and lemon pesto.
  • Pichade de Menton:   Bread topped with tomato, onion, anchovies, garlic and olives.

Tip: The best ice cream in Menton comes from Tutti Frutti and the lavender flavour definitely makes top 10 list of all-time favourites.

Wander around the Botanical Gardens

Like other cities on the Cote d’Azur (Monaco and Eze), Menton is home to many beautiful botanical gardens. The gardens along the coast date back to the 18 th century when botanists started to visit the region to enjoy the comfortable winter climate. At this time, many tropical and subtropical species were introduced, and the number of botanical and exotic gardens started to grow. There are six “exceptional gardens” (Jardins Remarquables) in Menton which are open to the public at various times during the week.

The Botanical Gardens of Menton

  • Maria Serena
  • Serre de la Madone
  • Fontana Rosa
  • Clos du Peyronet

A French Riviera Day Trip

If you’re staying in Menton as a base rather than visiting for a day trip, one of the best things you can do during your time there is take a day trip to another town along the French Riviera. There are so many to choose from, all with unique things to see and do. Close by you have the city of Monaco , an urban metropolis and city state. There’s a beautiful old town, the famous Monte Carlo Casino and beautiful gardens to explore. Alternatively, there’s a trip to the larger city of Nice where you will find the beautiful old town, plenty of art museums, roman ruins and a lively culture. Or head up into the mountains in Eze or Saint Paul de Vence and explore the medieval history of the region.

Tip: Here you will find more tours and activities in Menton and along the French Riviera

If you are taking a day trip to Menton I can assume you are staying in one of the other towns or cities along the Cote d’Azur – namely Eze , Villefranche-sur-Mer, Nice, Monaco, or Antibes. If you are not already in the French Riviera or haven’t visited before, something to note is that public transport between the cities along the Cote d’Azur is incredibly easy. There are direct train lines and buses that link all the villages together that are all a reasonably good price.

Day Trip to Menton from Nice

So, if you are taking a day trip from Nice to Menton you will want to take the TER train. This leaves from several different stations in Nice – Nice Saint-Augustin, Nice Ville, and Nice Riquier. Nice Ville is the central station and closest to the city centre, but of course which station you catch the train from will depend where in Nice you are staying. To get to the station you can either walk, catch a tram or a bus. The train to Menton passes through all stations in Nice. From Nice to Menton takes around 35 minutes by train. You can find all the times and even buy tickets on this page .

Train Stations in Menton

There are two train stations in Menton – Menton and Menton Garavan. Menton Station is closer to the city, with about a 10-minute walk to get to the old town. Menton Garavan is on the other side of the old town, about a 10-minute walk past the harbour. Both stations are fine to alight at – it doesn’t make too much of a difference. We took the train to Menton and the train back to Nice from Menton Garavan but I would perhaps recommend taking the train to and from Menton Station.

Day Trip to Menton from other towns on the Cote d’Azur

The same applies if you are visiting Menton from Antibes, Monaco, or any other towns along the coast! Most cities have a train station with the direct line through Menton. You can find all the schedules, book tickets, and plan you trip here .

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, visiting Menton makes for a perfect day trip. While you can stay longer, one day in Menton is enough to see and experience what the town has to offer without feeling you have missed out on anything. Taking a day trip to Menton is very simple and quick from most other areas along the Cote d’Azur.

Should I stay in Menton or Nice?

If you are spending a longer period of time on the French Riviera and want to see a few different places then I recommend staying in Nice. It is more central and a very good base for exploring the region. However, if you are looking for a quieter base then Menton is a still good option. Day trips to areas such as Antibes and Saint Paul de Vence take longer but overall the area is very beautiful and relaxing.

Unlike some of its more crowded neighbors, Menton offers a serene and authentic experience. The town is adorned with beautiful gardens, historical architecture, and stunning sea views.

Unique Things to Do in Menton

Discover Menton’s unique charm through its lemon festival, serene gardens, Baroque architecture, and vibrant markets, offering a distinctive slice of the Riviera’s beauty and culture.

Exploring Menton Old Town

Things to do in Menton: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Menton’s Old Town, or ‘ Vieille Ville ‘, is a delightful maze of narrow lanes and steep staircases, all leading to the breathtaking Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange.

As I wandered these streets, I was struck by the Italianate architecture, a nod to the town’s history as part of the Republic of Genoa.

Every corner turned revealed a new surprise: quaint shops, vibrant murals, and locals enjoying their daily espresso.

The view from the cemetery, overlooking the Old Town and the sea, is particularly mesmerizing and offers the perfect spot for a reflective moment.

Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange

Things to do in Menton: The photo captures the striking architecture of a baroque-style church with ornate yellow and white towers reaching into the clear blue sky, juxtaposed against the warm tones of surrounding Mediterranean buildings and staircases.

Dominating the Menton skyline is the majestic Basilique Saint Michel Archange, a testament to baroque architecture’s grandeur.

My visit there was like stepping back in time. The church’s opulent facade and richly decorated interior, with its intricate frescoes and altarpieces, left me in awe.

The basilica, perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views of the sea and the old town.

Its historical significance, dating back to the 17th century, provides a profound glimpse into Menton’s past and its religious heritage, making it a must-see for any visitor interested in history and architecture.

Walking Along Promenade du Soleil

Things to do in Menton: The photo showcases a picturesque esplanade with a solitary bench, leading the eye towards a cluster of colorful buildings and a prominent church tower, all under the radiant Mediterranean sun, exemplifying the charm of a coastal European town.

Strolling along the Promenade du Soleil is a quintessential Menton experience.

This picturesque seafront walkway, lined with palm trees, offers stunning Mediterranean views, perfect for leisurely strolls or peaceful morning jogs.

Along the way, visitors can admire various artworks, including sculptures, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of cafés and restaurants.

Jean Cocteau Museum

This image depicts a sunny, urban promenade where people relax on benches, with a unique modern building featuring wavy, abstract-shaped openings in the background, complemented by tall palm trees against a clear blue sky.

A short walk from the basilica led me to the Jean Cocteau Museum.

Dedicated to the multi-talented artist, this museum showcases an extensive collection of Cocteau’s work, from ceramics and tapestries to sketches and films.

The modern, sea-facing building contrasts with the old town’s traditional architecture, symbolizing Cocteau’s innovative spirit.

I found the museum not just a tribute to Cocteau but also a reflection of Menton’s cultural depth.

The museum is a significant stop for art enthusiasts and those tracing the footprints of great artists on the French Riviera.

Hiking Near the Italian Border

A panoramic view from a mountain path reveals a verdant landscape that descends to a coastal town, with the azure blue sea meeting the horizon under a bright sky, showcasing the natural beauty of the Mediterranean region.

For those who love combining nature with adventure, the trails around Menton offer an exciting opportunity.

A particularly remarkable trail is the “ Balcony of the Mediterranean ” hike.

This trail, starting from the heart of Menton, leads hikers through a series of picturesque paths that offer stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding hills.

As you ascend, the trail takes you closer to the Italian border, allowing you to experience the unique blend of French and Italian landscapes.

The path, well-marked and suitable for hikers of moderate experience, meanders through olive groves and traditional Mediterranean vegetation.

Reaching the peak, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views that span across the coastline, capturing the essence of the Riviera’s beauty.

Vieux Château Cemetery

Things to do in Menton: This image shows a serene hilltop cemetery overlooking a coastal town with lush green mountains in the background. A prominent stone cross in the foreground symbolizes peace and eternity, with the Mediterranean Sea gently stretching into the horizon.

One of Menton’s most unexpected yet profound attractions is the Cemetery of the Old Château.

Situated on a hill overlooking the city, it offers a serene environment and stunning panoramic views.

The cemetery is known for being the final resting place of notable figures, including William Webb Ellis, the inventor of rugby.

Walking among the ancient tombstones, I felt a sense of peace and reflection, making it a unique and contemplative experience distinct from the usual tourist trail.

These historical and cultural landmarks enrich the Menton travel guide, showcasing the town’s layered history and artistic legacy.

Each site offers a different perspective on Menton, from its artistic contributions to its architectural marvels, forming an integral part of what makes Menton, nestled on the Côte d’Azur, so special.

Culinary Delights of Menton

Menton’s culinary scene is a delightful fusion of French and Italian influences, offering an array of tastes that are as vibrant as the town itself.

Marché des Halles

A bustling outdoor market under white canopies in front of the vibrant yellow Marché des Halles building in Menton, France, offering an array of plants and flowers, with locals and tourists strolling around, enjoying one of the popular things to do in Menton.

At the heart of Menton’s gastronomy is the Marché des Halles.

This bustling market, with its array of fresh produce, captures the essence of Mediterranean cuisine.

I remember being greeted by the lively chatter of locals and the enticing aromas of fresh herbs and ripe fruits.

Strolling through the market, you can find everything from artisanal cheeses to hand-picked olives.

It’s not just a place to shop; it’s an experience that immerses you in the local culture.

My personal favorite find was a stall selling homemade lemon marmalade, a nod to Menton’s citrus heritage.

Where to Eat in Menton

When it comes to dining in Menton, the options are as diverse and inviting as the town itself. Here are three restaurants I personally recommend:

  • Le Mirazur : For an exquisite culinary experience, Le Mirazur is a must-visit. Led by the renowned Chef Mauro Colagreco, this Michelin-starred restaurant offers a menu inspired by the sea, the mountains, and the restaurant’s own gardens.
  • La Maison Martin et Fils : This charming eatery in the heart of the old town offers a more traditional experience. Their menu features classic French and Italian dishes, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients.
  • Le Petit Port : For those seeking a casual dining experience with a view, Le Petit Port is a fantastic choice. Located near the old port, this bistro serves a range of Mediterranean dishes, especially known for its fresh seafood and pasta. Dining here as the sun sets over the Mediterranean is an experience in itself.

Menton’s Beaches and Festivals

Things to do in Menton: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Plage des Sablettes is more than just a beach; it’s a picturesque retreat that perfectly captures the essence of Menton.

As a beach lover, I found myself drawn to its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, which provided a refreshing escape from the bustling city life.

But what truly sets Plage des Sablettes apart are the incredible photo opportunities it offers.

Framed by the stunning backdrop of Menton’s old town, this beach is one of the prime Menton photo spots and best Menton instagram spots, offering countless opportunities to capture the enchanting Mediterranean light and the vibrant hues of the town.

The beach itself is well-equipped, making it ideal for a day of relaxation or a family outing.

Whether you’re lounging on the sand, swimming in the serene waters, or strolling along the promenade, the views are spectacular at every turn.

As an added bonus, the proximity to the old town means you’re just a short walk away from exploring more picturesque scenes and hidden gems of Menton.

Menton Lemon Festival

Things to do in Menton: A vibrant parade float featuring a large, orange dragon and musicians, all adorned with citrus fruits, entertains a crowd along the seaside promenade under a clear blue sky, capturing the festive spirit of a traditional fruit festival.

The Menton lemon festival (Fête du Citron) is a unique event that truly encapsulates the spirit of Menton.

Celebrated annually, this vibrant festival is dedicated to the lemon, a fruit that has become synonymous with the town.

I was amazed by the elaborate citrus sculptures and the lively parades.

The festival is not just a visual spectacle; it’s a community celebration, with concerts, shows, and a crafts market.

Attending the Fête du Citron is a must for anyone visiting Menton, offering a glimpse into the town’s culture and the creativity of its people.

Discovering Menton’s Gardens

Lemon gardens: a citrusy paradise.

Things to do in Menton: A pergola with budding vines lines a tranquil garden path, flanked by vibrant yellow flowers and lush greenery, leading towards a serene sitting area under the warm daylight.

Menton is renowned for its lemons, and a visit to one of the many Menton gardens, like the Jardin du Palais de Carnolès , is a sensory delight.

Strolling through rows of lemon trees, laden with fruit, was like walking in a citrus-scented dream.

The gardens also host sculptures and art, making it one of the best free things to do in Menton.

Jardins Biovès

Nestled in the heart of Menton, Jardins Biovès isn’t just a garden; it’s a symphony of colors and fragrances.

The first time I wandered through these intricate pathways, I was struck by the sheer variety of flora.

From exotic species to meticulously trimmed hedges, every corner of this garden is a feast for the senses.

The best time to visit is during the Fête du Citron, when the garden transforms into a vibrant exhibition of citrus-themed sculptures.

It’s a unique experience that perfectly captures the essence of Menton, blending art with nature.

Val Rahmeh-Menton Botanical Garden

A short stroll from the hustle and bustle of the city leads you to the Val Rahmeh-Menton Botanical Garden.

This garden is a haven of tranquility, where the sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds replaces the noise of the city.

It houses an astonishing collection of tropical and subtropical plants. I remember being mesmerized by the palm trees and exotic flowers, which transported me to a tropical paradise.

The garden’s history, dating back to the 1900s, adds to its allure, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in botany or just looking for a peaceful retreat.

Menton, France: The Pearl of the French Riviera

Menton, France: The Pearl of the French Riviera

Menton: the pearl of France and one of the most beautiful corners of the country. Jean Cocteau Museum

Are you an art and architecture enthusiast looking for the best things to do in Menton? Look no further than the Jean Cocteau Museum! Immerse yourself in the world of this multi-talented French artist who called Menton his home.

I visited the Jean Cocteau Museum in Menton last summer, and it was an incredible experience. The museum’s architecture alone is worth seeing, with its unique trapezoidal structure blending seamlessly with the surrounding historical buildings.

The Jean Cocteau Museum is housed in a modern two-story trapezoidal structure designed by renowned architect Rudy Ricciotti . This building beautifully contrasts with the surrounding belle epoque and baroque architecture.

Inside, you’ll find a permanent collection of Cocteau’s drawings, sketches, engravings, and photographs, showcasing his artistic journey. The museum also hosts exciting temporary exhibitions featuring Cocteau’s famous friends like Picasso and Coco Chanel .

Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

Located in Menton, the Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden is an absolute gem for nature lovers. I visited last summer and was captivated by the stunning variety of plants and the serene atmosphere.

It offers a breathtaking glimpse into the world of flora. This one-hectare garden was once owned by Lord Radcliffe , who established it in the 1900s. Today, it’s managed by the French National Museum of Natural History and serves as a prominent tourist attraction.

But that’s not all! The Val Rahmeh Menton Garden is home to some truly incredible rare species, like Easter Island’s Sophora Toromiro and magnificent four-century-old olive trees.

Menton’s Belle Epoque architecture is stunning! It symbolizes the town’s rich history, showcasing ornate facades, grand entrances, and intricate ironwork.

The Hotel Royal Westminster , built in 1870, is a prime example. Its detailed stonework and fancy iron balconies capture the era’s grandeur.

Villa Genesis, constructed in 1896, also embodies the style with intricate ironwork and ornate columns. These buildings represent the increasing desire for beauty and luxury in French society during that time.

L’orangeraie, completed in 1902, exemplifies the pursuit of aesthetic splendor.

Shallow Waters & Rapid De Menton

Shallow Waters & Rapid De Menton

Menton’s coastal area is amazing for swimming, even for kids! The waters are shallow and there’s no need to worry about strong currents.

And if you’re up for an adventure, the nearby rapid de Menton is a thrill-seeker’s paradise! You can go rafting or kayaking there.

Now, let’s talk about the beaches. The western ones are super smooth and easy to walk on, unlike the rocky terrain on the eastern side. Plage du Fossan is great for families, with calm and shallow waters.

But if you’re looking for a livelier atmosphere, head to Plage Rondelli. The waters there can be a bit more turbulent, but it’s always buzzing with younger crowds.

Oh, and we can’t forget about the beach bars ! They’re a big part of Menton’s beach culture, offering refreshments and a relaxed vibe.

Grab a cold drink, kick back, and enjoy the stunning scenery. It’s the perfect spot to hang out with friends and make unforgettable memories.

While you’re there, don’t hesitate to explore the enchanting rue du Vieux-Château , the inviting Capadona and Lampedusa lanes, and the elegant rue Longue, which is lined with magnificent private mansions.

And most importantly, don’t be afraid to get a little lost as that’s how you stumble upon the hidden treasures of the city.

Discover the local flavors at the marché des Halles

City of Menton, Côte d’Azur, France

Down in the south, the market is like a sacred spot! And in Menton, the market hall is a true institution.

It’s this awesome covered market right on the seafront, right at the entrance to the Old Town. It’s where you go to really feel the vibe of the city, grab some local goodies, or just leisurely wander from one stall to another.

You’ll find a delightful array of specialties in Menton – think artisanal orange jams, lemon wine, barbajuan (a samosa-like treat), limoncello, olive oil, and pichade (the cousin of niçoise pissaladière).

If you’re looking for something unique to do in Menton, head on over to this historic cemetery that sits atop a hill. It’s the oldest cemetery in the city and offers breathtaking views.

This place is actually built on the ruins of a castle, hence the name. And its prime location gives you an incredible view.

Menton, France - a detailed guide to the Pearl of France

Our Menton France travel guide covers everything you need to know to plan the ultimate trip to the ‘pearl of France’. Menton is just 30km from Nice and very easily accessed by train. This makes it a delightful day trip in the French Riviera . Menton is the last stop on the train before Italy. It is much less visited than neighbouring towns known for their glitz and glamour like Monaco and Cannes.

The town of Menton France has the classic Riviera charm, but is quite laid back and a little sleepy. This  makes it a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera. It’s well known for its famed lemon products and pastel painted old town. It’s more affordable than Nice and other surrounding towns. It has charming views from both the summit of the old town as well as on the water’s edge. For a sleepy town, there’s also a bustling boulevard lined with both French and Italian restaurants, many of which with menus incorporating local lemon products.

In this guide, we provide information on how to get to Menton France, what to see and do while you’re there, where to stay and the best time to visit.

Looking for more guides to the South of France?

If your visiting Menton as par of a larger trip to South of France, check out our 10 day French Riviera guide , or our guide on the best day trips from Nice . We highly recommend that you make Nice your home base when travelling through the South of France. We have incredibly detailed city guides to   Nice , Monaco , Marseille , Cassis , and Villefranche-sur-Mer , and and a guide to the best day trips from Nice .

Tip: avoid the biggest mistake we made. If you ask for water at a restaurant they will give you bottled still or sparkling water. They will never bring you tap water. To save yourself the money, ask for a carafe of water by saying the following  ‘carafe d’eau s’il vous plaît’.

Couple embracing at dusk in front of colourful town

Travel For Working People

Thanks for visiting! We're Bec & Michael and we are two hard working lovers of travel! We hope our words inspire you to travel the world without having to toss out your career!

What to see and do in Menton France

Wander around the old town in  menton france.

You can wander through the streets of this beautiful pastel town for hours and you will mostly have it to yourself. There are small pockets that are busy, but the majority of the area is very quiet and calm. There’s not too much happening in the old town during the day, though it does come to life in the evening. We had hoped to get some lunch once we arrived but struggled to really find much open. It’s a sleepy town, but we thought that made it extra special!

The narrow paved streets are surrounded by tall buildings painted in the most delightful hues of pink, yellow and orange. The buildings contrast beautifully against the backdrop of the turquoise bay. Every single corner seems more beautiful than the last. Wandering through the old quarter with a camera in hand is the perfect way to spend a morning in the French Riviera.

Basilica of Saint Michael Archangel

If you google Menton, you’ll probably see a photo of this stunning church ! The geometric staircase leading up to the basilica is very photogenic. Head to Ramp Saint-Michel for the best angle to capture it. The lemon-yellow basilica is a 17th century cathedral, located at the summit of the old quarter. Both the church and spire are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The annual music festival is held here between July and August. Beware the stage set up for the festival impacts on the symmetry of the staircase if you are hoping to photograph this location. You will only be able to enter a couple of hours each day (typically 10am to 12pm and 3pm to 5pm). And you won’t be able to access it at all on Sundays. You can enter the church for free, however entry to the bell tower is by paid ticket in return for panoramic views over the city.

Menton France’s  gardens

One thing Menton is known for is its exquisite gardens including Serre de la Madone Garden and Val-Rahmeh Menton Botanical Garden. Serre de la Madone Garden may not be very convenient if you’re only here for a day as it’ s a 45 minute walk from town or a half an hour bus ride. Regardless, if it is something you’re interested in seeing, Serre de la Madone Garden is a six-hectare terraced sub-tropical garden designed in the 1920s and 30s.

Val-Rahmeh Menton Botanical Garden is easier to reach and is only a 15 minute walk out of town. Val-Rahmeh Menton Botanical Garden is nicknamed ‘valley of tranquility’. It is a one-hectare garden surrounding an Italian-Provençal villa with themed unstructured gardens dedicated to Mediterranean diversity.

Quai Impératrice Eugénie for the best photo spot in  Menton France

Walk down to the port and along the port walls at Quai Impératrice Eugénie for a fantastic viewpoint back towards the pastel skyline. If you can plan your trip to coincide with sunset we highly recommend this. Menton is famed to have one of the most beautiful harbours in all of Cote d’Azur.

Go for a swim at Plage des Sablettes

If you’re looking for a beach day on the French Riviera, definitely consider Menton. Plage des Sablettes is very large, sandy, and there are even bathrooms here! It’s located at the bottom of the old quarter with a new promenade featuring many restaurants and bars overlooking the water. There are of course a few beach clubs if you prefer but either way you’ll have stunning views of the colourful buildings in Menton set against the backdrop of the vast Italian mountains. The beach itself is very calm and shallow, perfect for families and those wanting to participate in some water sports.

Pick up some lemon products in  Menton France

Bordered by Italy, Menton is famous for  its citrus due to its exceptionally mild climate which makes it the perfect region to cultivate lemons. Sweeter and less bitter than the lemons you are used to, the Menton lemon is available year round and has become an essential part of Menton’s heritage. You’ll find citrus products such as jams, preserves, lemonade and limoncello in boutique stores all around the old town. There’s even a lemon festival ( La Fête du Citron ) in February-March every year where the city hosts giant sculptures and exhibits made from citrus. All in all, 140 tonnes of fruit (about 8km of fruit garlands) and 20,000 hours of work go into making the festival happen and it is truly a sight to see.

What to pack for Menton France

For the beach.

Unless you plan on only visiting organised beach clubs, you will need to bring your own towel. You will be able to find quite a few stalls, bazaars and shops in the old town and near the promenade that sell beach towels if you have forgotten to bring one with you.

The beach in Menton is sandy, however in general most beaches in the French Riviera are pebble beaches. While you can lay on a towel for a little while, you will be uncomfortable if you’re staying for long. This is where a beach mat will come in handy. Some hotels will have beach mats that you can borrow but these will also be available from the same shops you’ll find towels in. The pebble beaches can be uncomfortable to walk on (and hot!) so water shoes or sandals will also be really helpful during your visit for walking around and getting in and out of the water.

Finally, there is more or less no shade at the majority of beaches (literally no shade at the public beaches in Nice). Again, a lot of hotels will have beach umbrellas that you can borrow. But if they don’t and you plan on spending a fair bit of time at the beach, you should pick one up (ask your hotel to keep it when you leave and lend it out to future guests so that it’s not trashed).

Universal adaptor

Don’t forget to bring your adaptor! If you don’t already have one, make sure you buy one that has USB and USB C ports so that you can plug in your phone chargers as well.

European sim

All European data and minute plans are interconnected, so if you’re arriving from another European country your sim card will work in France. You will only need to worry about picking up a sim card if you’re arriving from outside of the EU.

Try and pick up a European sim card (like Lycamobile, Giffgaff or Lebara) on your arrival at Nice airport. You can find sim cards at ‘Relay’, a large newsagent which has stores in both terminals at the airport. Relay will close at 9.30pm however, so if you’re arriving late at night you might need to wait until you get into town. In Nice (and also Menton) you’ll be able to pick up cheap sim cards at the tobacco stores and corner shops. If you need help installing the sims however, you will be best off going directly to a provider’s store such as Orange.

Where to stay

While some people choose to stay overnight in Menton, we definitely recommend making Nice your home base and taking day trips to towns such as Menton. This is especially true if you’re planning on traveling around by public transport. Nice has an incredible amount of connections to nearby towns and villages by train and bus at very affordable rates. In fact, most places on the Cote d’Azur can be reached from Nice.

Nice is a fantastic home base to explore the French Riviera due to its:

  • Proximity to international airport
  • Train and bus connections to nearby villages and beaches
  • Accommodation and restaurant options
  • Sightseeing options for your downtime

Best areas to stay in Nice

We suggest that you try to stay in the area between the train station and the old town / beach. These are the areas of Le Carré d’Or (green in map above), Thiers (red in map aboce) or Carabacel (purple in map above). We split our visit between staying very close to the train station for a few days, and then a few days very close to the promenade.

Hôtel Byakko Nice

At Hotel Byakko Nice we paid €490.50 for 3 nights in August 2022 (the MOST EXPENSIVE time of year to visit Nice). The hotel’s location was perfect for day trips, being only a 6 minute walk to the train station. It was also only a 15 minute walk into the old town and a 20 minute walk to the promenade. We really liked this hotel. The staff were really friendly, the aircon was cold, and the room was perfect for a few nights with enough space to spread out our luggage. An added bonus was the rooftop here, perfect for a rose at the end of the day.

Hôtel de la Fontaine

We also stayed at Hotel de le Fontaine and paid €585 for 4 nights in August 2022. It was only a 2 minute walk to the promenade, which was perfect for our beach days, and sunsets on the beach with a pizza and a bottle of wine. It was a 15 minute walk into the old town, and a 15 minute walk to the train station (or take the tram for €1.50 and you will cut down walking time to just 7 minutes). The distance to the promenade was our favourite thing about this hotel, but again the staff were incredibly friendly and the rooms were super spacious for a few nights.

Where to stay in Menton France

If you would like to stay overnight in Menton you will find that it is slightly more affordable than Nice (yay!). If you’re arriving by public transport, be aware that it is a 15 minute walk to town from the train station. So if you have luggage with you, you may need to organise transport to and from the train station. We would recommend that you stay in or near the Old Town especially if you’re only staying one night.

How to get to Menton France

You will most likely be traveling to Menton from Nice. If so, you will need to take the train to Menton. From your closest train station (Nice Ville or Nice Riquier) take the line towards Ventimiglia (Ventimille) and hop off at Mention station after 35 minutes. You’ll need to walk 15 minutes into town from here. The trip will cost €3-5 per person one way.

Tours to  Menton France

Tours to Menton don’t seem to be that common, but you should be able to find an option or two leaving from Nice. This 8 hour day trip for example takes you to Menton and the Italian Riviera for € 120 per person (quite a bit more expensive than your typical French Riviera day tour). This 8 hour tour is € 110 and will take you to Italy for the morning and stop at Menton on the way back.

How to get to Nice

You will pick up flights direct to Nice from most destinations in Europe as well as further afield in the US, North Africa and the Middle East. The closest airport is Nice Cote d’Azur Airport , an international airport situated just 8km away from the city centre. It is the third busiest airport in France after the two that service Paris so that gives you an idea of how popular this destination is!

Getting from Nice airport into the city is soooo pleasant and easy! Inside the airport you’ll see signs directing you to the tram. Take tram line 2 in the direction of Port Lympia for €1.50 each way. There are multiple stops in town depending on where your hotel is. The main stop in the city centre is Jean Médecin. The whole journey won’t take longer than 30 minutes. The tram leaves the airport every 8 minutes and runs from around 4am to after midnight depending on the day. You can find more information including timetables here.

Getting around the French Riviera

As you will most likely be visiting other villages and towns on the French Riviera at the same time as Menton, I wanted to cover off the basics on how to get around the south of France. Southern France is one of the easiest regions to travel around by public transport that I have ever experienced! It’s so well interconnected and affordable. Below I cover all the major options for traveling around southern France including public and private transport.

Public transport

To get to destinations outside of Nice you will want to take public transport. It’s quick, affordable and you won’t have to worry about traffic and parking.

There are two train stations in Nice, Nice Ville and Nice Riquier. If you’re booking your tickets in advance be sure to check which station is closer to your accommodation. Nice Ville is to the north west of the old town. If you’re planning on staying close to the promenade this will probably be the closer option for you. Nice Riquier is further east, just above Quartier du Port. We found using the Trainline app to book our tickets ahead of time to be very easy and convenient. The prices are the same, and the schedule is accurate and up to date.

You will find that the train will get you to most surrounding villages much quicker than the bus, but there are exceptions. A notable example is Èze. The train station goes to the town on the coast, whereas most people want to visit the village at the top of the hill which can only be reached by bus. Bus tickets can be bought from the bus driver, just bring cash with you (typically a ticket will cost you €1.5 each way).

Realistically a lot of destinations on the French Riviera are much more convenient to visit by public transport due to the lack of availability and high cost of parking in many villages. If you do need to hire a car, there are plenty of options in Nice both at the airport and in town. This is a hugely popular destination, so booking your hire car in advance will help you to secure a good price and the kind of vehicle you are after. If you’re driving make sure you plan your days so that you are arriving at your destination early in the morning so that you can find parking, and also make sure you’re factoring in parking fees in your budget as this will add up.

When to visit Menton France

We visited Menton in August and honestly I wouldn’t suggest it. It’s very hot and France isn’t made for the heat. Between the hot trains, the beaches without shade and all of the outdoor eateries, Menton would be much nicer in June or September. There are obviously crowds in summer, but we didn’t find them so bad. In fact, the crowds create a great atmosphere and add to the European summer vibe. Some of the trains got a bit uncomfortably packed but we didn’t struggle with anything else.

If you are visiting in the summer be sure to book restaurants ahead of time, like you would for anywhere in Europe. Between November and May a lot of tour operators, beach clubs and some restaurants will be closed. The weather will still be pleasant though, you will just have a quieter time and will have to plan ahead more to make sure what you want to do is possible. Menton actually has a unique micro-climate which provides it with a temperate environment all year round with an average 316 days of sunshine annually.

Travel Budget?

The below costs are what we actually spent in August 2022. If you’re looking to save a bit of cash, definitely consider visiting in June or September. You’ll still have the vibe of the European summer crowds, but with discounted prices on everything.

Honestly, we thought the French Riviera was going to be more expensive than it ended up being for us. We were very selective about where we ate out (only ate out at a really nice restaurant once) and only went to a beach club once, plus mostly bought bottles of wine to drink at the beach rather than at bars.
