Happy Thursday! 😀 Are you craving an adventure? As promised, here’s part two of our Jambojet experience with ideas of Fun things to do in Eldoret on a budget!

Today, I invite you on a different kind of journey as we explore the less traveled paths to Eldoret…

Think of landing in Eldoret as ‘point zero’, with access to endless possibilities of things to do in Eldoret & the greater North Rift region…

So in this post, we’ll travel across 4 Counties: Uasin-Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet & Trans-Nzoia. After all, why explore 1 county when you can visit 4, right? 😀

Visit a Tea Estate in Nandi!

Where Eldoret is dubbed the ‘ City of Champions ‘, Nandi County is  the ‘ Source of Champions !’

It boasts of top athletes like Eliud Kipchoge , Janet Jepkosgei & Kipchoge Keino. Nandi is also home to some of the most beautiful tea estates you’ll come across in Kenya!

The 1 hour drive from Eldoret floats by as the stunning Nandi Hills & rolling tea gardens come into view… You can almost feel the sweat & hard work that’s poured into these plantations.

>>You might enjoy coming here for the crisp, clean and refreshing air, or to learn tea-picking from the friendly locals… and most certainly for the views! 🙂

Play a round of Golf at Nandi Bears Club

Legend has it that once upon a time, a bear-like animal used to terrorize the residents in the area… Though it was never found, the name stuck thus earning Nandi Bears Club its identity.

The club was established in the 1920’s, initially for tennis and rugby games… They later constructed a 9-hole golf course with the longest hole at 530 yards.

The club makes for a good escape not only for a game of golf, but also the peaceful & pristine green environment.

Picnic at Kapsimotwa Gardens

Kapsimotwa Gardens, in Nandi, is a charming picnic site hidden in what feels like a concave of lush greenery, trees and surrounding tea farms… It is the perfect place to picnic with your family and friends.

You have the option of bringing your own food, cooking on site or try their buffet (on request at about Kes.800 per person.)

• The entrance fees are Kes. 100 for Kenyans and Kes. 500/- for foreigners.
• Sport fishing is available at Kes. 500/- while camping on their grounds costs Kes.1,000 per tent.

Visit Chepkiit Waterfall

Our visit to Chepkiit Waterfall remains one of my favourite experiences! If you enjoy the sound of water, then you’ll want to make a date with Chepkiit. 🙂

Since the road to Chepkiit is quite rocky, you’ll need a 4-wheel drive vehicle… You’ll find various viewpoints to watch River Sosiani majestically drain its waters over colossal rocks, down the escarpment…

P.S. >>I must emphasize the need for caution as there’s been fatal incidents here, in the past.

Wind down with Dinner At Naiberi River Resort

After an adventure-filled day, dinner at Naiberi River Campsite & Resort is exactly what the doctor ordered! 😀

Naiberi Resort is located about 16km away from Eldoret town. From its stone-age-like structures, to the wild undergrowth by the river it feels like you’ve stepped into the calming palm of Mother Nature. 🙂

We had dinner at their Stone Cave restaurant… The ambient lighting coupled with great food and fantastic company made for a memorable evening!

You can also visit the Sirikwa caves (holes)… It’s believed that these caves were originally home to the Sirikwa people, in prehistoric times.

Race With Champions in Elgeyo Marakwet!

Heads-up! 😀 You’ll require a tonne of patience and a dash of good humor for the long road-trip… Elgeyo Marakwet County, aka the ‘ Home of Champions ‘, is about 3 hours’ drive away from Eldoret.

Luckily for us, with bright & humorous personalities like Samantha & Adagala, there was hardly ever a dull moment in our van! 😀

Eric Maiyo, the Coach, welcomed us graciously to Kapsait Training Camp, along with veteran athletes: Simon Biwott, John Kemboi & Vincent Kipkemoi.

These former champions established Kapsait Training camp to support young, upcoming athletes from the region…

The weather was quite shifty that day, so we retreated into one of the rooms to meet the upcoming athletes…

With the freezing cold, everyone was clad in heavy jackets. Yet, there was something electric in the air… Perhaps it was our amazement at the athlete’s humble demeanor or how touching their stories felt!?

In a room filled with such greatness, lined with humility & determination, you can’t help but feel inspired! 🙂

Fun Fact: Brigid Kosgei, the 2020 London Marathon Women’s Champion and World record holder trains at Kapsait.

Travel Tips:

• It’s a whole day-trip, so carry packed lunch & water.
• Dress warmly as it gets really cold. Waterproof hiking boots or gumboots will come in handy.
• Other attractions in the area: Mt. Koisungur Conservancy & hiking at Chergoit.

Chororget Church Rock View Point

This definitely tops my list of things to do in Eldoret! If you’ve ever doubted Kenya’s beauty, Chororget Church Rock will do the trick! 😀

Located in Kerio Valley, about 40min. from Eldoret, this viewpoint offers the most spectacular views of the Rift Valley! They named it ‘Church Rock’ as it’s situated right next to a church.

Chororget is the ideal place to go for a quiet retreat while also reveling in the joys of nature. 🙂

P.S. Exercise caution since there are no barriers, at the rock edges

Scenic Lunch at Samich Resort

If you want both the views and a spot to relax while having lunch, then Samich Resort is your perfect stop… Strategically built at the edge of the Kerio Valley, you get magnificent undisturbed views!

We got to have a picnic lunch on the grass, with the Rift Valley sprawling out generously before us, as far as the eye can see… It honestly doesn’t get better! 🙂

• Entrance fees: Kes. 200/- for adults, redeemable at the restaurant.
• Samich Resort is currently closed as they get their Covid-19 protocols in place, and will reopen soon.

Visit the Mt. Elgon National Park

Did you know?? The Mt. Elgon National Park covers about 1,279km², sitting squarely at the Kenya-Uganda border. It is rich in indigenous trees, vegetation, natural caves, waterfalls, wildlife & birds… The mountain’s highest Peak lies in Uganda, at 4,321m above sea level.

The Mt. Elgon National Park, located in Trans-Nzoia County, is about a 2 hours’ drive from Eldoret. And for the most part, the road is tarmacked with a manageable rough road section…

As you enter the park gates, you’ll catch wildlife grazing leisurely without a care in the world.

After a quick debrief with KWS and County officials, we ventured into the Park for a short hike to Kitum Caves…

Fun Fact: Kitum cave contains volcanic rocks that wild animals like Elephants, bushbuck, and buffalo lick or ‘mine’ for its minerals.

Though it was rainy, the cool forest air felt refreshing! We found beautiful mini-waterfalls at the mouths of the cave…

Kitum cave is about 160m deep and it’s said to be 15 million years old. Apparently, the indigenous Sabaot tribe used to take refuge in Kitum cave from raiders.

When you visit Mt. Elgon, allocate a few days to get the full park experience: mountain climbing, biking, waterfall chasing and hiking up the trails…

You can also visit the other caves like: Making’eny, Chepnyalil and Ngwarisha.

• Affordable self-catering bandas and campsites are available for guests.
• They intend to build tented camps in the near future.
• Entrance fees: Kes. 250/- and Kes. 200/- for adults & kids respectively.

Other Things To Do In Eldoret and its Environs:-

• Visit Kipkaren River resort for zip lining and archery.
• Visit one of the 300 dams in Uasin-Gishu County like Kesses Dam for boat rides, swimming & sport fishing.
• A boat ride at Kesses dam costs Kes. 100/-

BoB’s amazing guide to Eldoret – Where to stay, what to eat and what to do?

In 2011, I traveled to Eldoret (Kenya) with two good friends for an internship in their university hospital. Before our trip, we searched the internet for information about Eldoret, but unfortunately we couldn’t find much. Therefore, Bunch of Backpackers would like to present this ultimate Eldoret travel guide! 

Eldoret travel guide

Introduction to eldoret.

Eldoret is a busy, prosperous university city in western Kenya. It also referred to as the ‘home to running’ since many olympic medal winners were born in this area. Eldoret is dominated by Moi University, which also incorporates a large teaching hospital. In 2008 Eldoret was one of the many Kenyan cities who were affected by the post-election violence. During these violent tribal riots hundreds of people died, got injured or lost their home.

How to get from Nairobi to Eldoret?

From Nairobi: – Fly with Jetlink or Fly540 for about 70 euro’s. 30 minutes flight. – Bus (Easycoach or Kampala Bus or Akamba Bus) for about 8 euro. Recommended. – Matatu (> 14 passengers in a minibus) for about 5 euro. Quite uncomfortable, esspeccialy with luggage. – Shuttle bus (7 passengers) for about 3 euro. Better than a matatu. – Taxi: about 120 euro.

Transportation in and around Eldoret

There is a matatu and Peugot stop near Ugnada road / the market. These leave when there are enough people.

A matatu – to Kisimu is Ksh 250 (2,5 hours) – to Nakuru is Ksh 200 (2-3 hours) – to Nairobi is Ksh 400 (6 hours) – to Kitale is Ksh 200

A Peugot – to Kisimu is Ksh 300 (2,5 hours) – to Nakuru is Ksh 400 (2-3 hours) – to Nairobi is Ksh 700 (6 hours)

A Lakamba bus  – to Nairobi is Ksh 500 and leaves at 10.30 and 21.00 via Nakuru (Ksh 250) – to Kampala is Ksh 1000 and leaves at 12.00 or midnight (6 hours)

Where to stay in Eldoret? (these are cheap and recommended hotels)

Bubbles Inn Our number one. Bubbles Inn has a central location between the city center and the hospital. The rooms are simple and small, but very clean with hot water. There is 24 hour security. Staff is friendly and reliable. Bubbles Inn has it own busy restaurant and breakfast is included (fruit, tea, egg, bread and yoghurt). Prices per room: 1500 Ksh/night and for a long stay 1100/Ksh/night. Cental Plaza, Oginga Odinga St, Eldoret. Tel: +254-532060992. Mobile: 0729633442.

Aya Inn Friendly cheap guesthouse with spacious rooms and a restaurant/bar. Prices per room: 650 Ksh/night. Tel: 053 2062259

Lincoln Hotel Comfortable option. Relaxed atmosphere at Oloo Rd. Prices per room: 800 Ksh/night. Tel: 05322093

Klique Hotel Although we only ate at the Klique a few times it seemed a reliable and fancy option in the middle of the city center of Eldoret. It is actually right across the street of Bubbles. Many western tourists seemed to stay there.

Sirikwa hotel Probably the most famous hotel in Eldoret. The Sirikwa hotel is a big fancy hotel just outside the city center of Eldoret. It has a beautiful garden and swimming pool. We ate there a few times, and saw one of the rooms, but did not think it was worth the extra money to stay there.

Where to eat in Eldoret?

This a list of our favorite restaurants and cafe’s!

– Arcade: Foodcourt with a Swiss Restaurant (pizza), Paul’s bakery (sandwiches) and Spree club (disco) – Sunjeel Palace: Best Indian food in town – Baker’s Yard: In Juma Hajee’s Arcade with pastries and cakes – Will’s pub: At Uganda Rd. Good for a pint and pubmeal. – Cafe Delicious: Simple, but as the name implies delicious Kenyan meals – Freddies: Freddies has the best burgers in town in an American-like bar. – Mamma Mia: Best pizza in town with an outside dining option in their garden! – Siam’s Palace: Best (but only) Chinese restaurant. – Klique hotel : Good, but more expensive food. Visited primarily by expats and Kenyan business men. – Eldoret Club: Fancy club with swimming pool and golfclub mainly meant for Western expats or business men. Some parts are members-only. – Cleopatra’s : At Odinga Oginga road, in the building at the gasstation on the first floor. Good icecreams and coffees.

Where to go clubbing in Eldoret?

The best clubs listed:

– Spree:   Place to be (especially on thursday night aka studentnight). Always busy and the best dancers in town can be found in this club. – Places: Uganda Rd, Fancy club with good DJ’s, Sometimes Western music. – Sam’s discotheek : In het White Castle Motel, mixed crowd. Often busy, but only opened on friday and saturday night. – Will’s Pub: Good place to have a beer and a snack. TV’s for sports. – Black Balls:  Sketchy name, but a nice bar to have a drink.

Where to go (grocery) shopping in Eldoret?

– Nakumatt Supermarket – Oginga Odinga Rd. – Kip Keino Sports and Bookshop – Oginga Odinga Rd – Uchumi Supermarket – behind Total Station – Eldo Supermarket – in Juma Hajee’s Arcade

Tip: Buy your souvenirs in Eldoret (near Uchumi supermarket are some souvenir stalls). Prices are low compared to other places in Kenya.

Best drivers in town to arrange your rides and tours

– Taxi Max : Experienced and reliable. Excellent and punctual guide. We arranged our masai mara trip through him. +254-‑721-­904-­578 – Taxi Jeff: Experienced (although less than Max) and reliable. Friendly and cheap. Comes often too late. We went to Lake Baringo/Lake Bogoria/Kakamega and Kapenguria wih him. +254-­726-056‑546 – Eldoret Travel Agency – Kenyatta St T 053-­‐‑2063588 (BoB does not have experience with this tour agency, if you have please let us know) – Elgeyo Travel and Tours – Uganda Rd T 052-­‐‑2062006  (BoB does not have experience with this tour agency, if you have please let us know)

TIP: ASK AROUND FOR RELIABLE TAXI DRIVERS. Once you found one you can trust note his telephone number. Never use taxis you don’t know. Rather call one you know and wait a bit longer. Both taxi Jeff and taxi Max are highly recommended (see above)

What to do around Eldoret?

– Lake Victoria – Lake Baringo – Lake Bogoria – Kampala (Uganda) – Jinja (Uganda) – Lake Nakuru – Lake Naivasha – Kericho country side – Kakamega forest – Kisumu – Saiwa Swamp National Park – Masai Mara

If possible I would save Masai Mara for last (save best for last). Also, if you’re student make sure you apply in advance for student discount through the Kenya Wildlife Service (send an email to [email protected]. Student discounts can be pretty steep. For Lake Nakuru, Hell’s gate, Tsavo East and West Masai Mara you have to apply seperately via ‘maratriangle.org’. You will need a written prove from your university and your student ID card.

Eldoret is a bustling city in western Kenya, ranked as the fifth largest in the country. It's famous for its strong economy and is the capital of Uasin Gishu County. Known as the "City of Champions," Eldoret hosts high-altitude training camps for athletes. It's also a great base for exploring attractions like Masai Mara National Park, the Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria.

The city has its own attractions like Kesses Dam and the Eldoret Museum, highlighting the region's natural beauty and cultural heritage. It's also known for its universities, like the University of Eldoret, which draws students from all over the world. The city hosts cultural and sporting events throughout the year, including music festivals, marathons, and agricultural shows like the Eldoret City Marathon and the Koroga Festival.

Things to do in Eldoret

1. iten viewpoint, 2. kesses dam, 3. eldoret war cemetery, 4. eldoret museum, 5. kitale nature conservancy, 6. the river mtrh mall, 7. sosiani forest, 8. sirikwa holes, must know before you travel to eldoret.

• Going Around:  You can go around the city on matatus (minibuses) for a budget-friendly ride but they have set routes within the city and nearby towns. If you’re looking for more flexibility, you can opt for the convenience of boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) and taxis at a higher cost.
• Pollution:  Water pollution is considered to be high. So, it is better to drink only bottled water.
• Eldoret Town Center: This area has a variety of hotels and lodges that offer easy access to the town's main attractions.
• Diverse Travellers: Adventure seekers can enjoy hiking and rock climbing near the Rift Valley. Moi University draws students, and athletes are drawn to the city's sports history. Families can explore parks and gardens, while cultural enthusiasts can visit markets and museums.
• Vaccinations:  It is important to receive mandatory vaccinations and consult with your doctor at least 6-8 months in advance regarding diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, and Cholera. Additionally, review your travel insurance plans to ensure adequate coverage while abroad.

• Taxi:  Taxi Max, Taxi Jess, Eldoret Travel Agency, and Elgeyo Travel and Tours are recommended drivers to arrange a taxi to go around the city. Do not book a taxi from unknown agencies.
• Weather:  It's a good idea to keep a heavy jacket with you at all times in Eldoret since the weather tends to be cold throughout most of the year.
• Bus Stand:  You can find a Matatu stand near Ugnada Road or the market. However, they only leave when full. So, be prepared to wait.
• Safety:  It is not recommended to walk in the city at night.

Affordable fun things to do in Eldoret

When people are talking about travel destinations, Eldoret rarely comes up. We are always talking about the Coastal regions, Naivasha, Kisumu and Nairobi. The North Rift region remains barely explored despite Eldoret being the fifth largest city in Kenya with countless tourist attraction sites.

I got a chance to explore Eldoret and part of the NOREB (North Rift Economic Bloc) regions courtesy of Jambojet as part of their #nowtravelready campaign and I was in awe! The beauty that is found in these places needs to be explored and documented. The NOREB region consists of 8 counties which are Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Samburu, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu and Turkana County.

In the few days I spent there, I got a chance to tour parts of Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia county. From these four counties, there were tons of activities and places to visit to fuel your wanderlust.

Visit Chepkiit Falls

Just 25 kilometres from Eldoret town, to the North East, is where Chepkiit falls is located. Chepkiit translates to ‘’view from above” and is also known as “Mlango falls”. The falls are believed to be a mercy-killing spot where the Nandi community used to push off the elderly people and the sick to “end their pain”. Over the years, the falls have become a major attraction site in the Nandi County. They are best viewed during the dry season as opposed to the rainy season which is more spectacular but risky. The Chepkiit name serves as a warning to view the waterfalls from a far. The place is also ideal for picnics,camping, weddings, and educational tours. Entry fee is Kshs. 200 per adult and Kshs. 100 per child.

Get tea plucking lessons

Eldoret and Kericho are well known for tea. You can’t go a kilometre without spotting a tea farm. On our way to Chepkiit falls, we passed through some nice tea estates and we were even taught how to pluck tea. Brace your back for some bending.

Visit Kapsimotwa Gardens

This place oozes wedding vibes. The green, well-manicured lawns, the dam, the trees, the tranquility in this place is unmatched. From the main road, you will pass through a rough road in the tea plantations before you get to the garden. You will rarely notice the rough road as you will be admiring the green tea gardens with a variety of flowers in between. If you are lucky enough as I was, you will spot the black and white colobus monkeys on the trees at Kapsimotwa gardens. Entry fee is just Kshs. 500 per car.

Go fishing and boat riding at Kesses Dam

Located in Uasin Gishu County, Kesses dam is a “must see” tourist attraction site. The man-made dam serves as a water supply point for Moi University. It is ideal for boat rides, swimming and fishing. A boat ride is just Kshs 100 per person per hour and you can pay Kshs 2,500 for the whole day to go fishing or just explore the dam.

Climb Mt. Elgon and Cherangany Hills

Mt. Elgon is the eight highest mountain in Africa. It borders Kenya and Uganda. Cross border tourism is allowed with prior planning and communication with the management of the park. The highest peak (Koitobos) from the Kenyan side is 4,222 miles high and 4, 321 miles on the Ugandan side known as Wagagai. The mountain has the largest caldera in the whole entire world. Hiking up the mountain can take you about 3-6 days depending on your fitness. For Cherangany Hills, it is quite doable and less steep compared to Mt. Elgon.

Explore Mt. Elgon National Park

Mt. Elgon National park is 169 kilometers wide and has over 5 caves with Kitum cave being the largest covering over 160 meters. This is where elephants come to mine salt which they don’t find in their forest due to the large amounts of rainfall in the area that causes leaching in the crops. Using their tasks, they dig in the caves in search of salt to supplement their lack of minerals. You start spotting animals as soon as you enter the gate. We saw zebras, buffaloes, bushbuck and the white and black colobus monkeys. Entry fee is Kshs. 250 per adult and Kshs.100 per child.

The caves served as homestead for the earlier communities that used to live in the area and while exploring, you are able to see where they used to sleep and the fire places. Bats and other birds also use the cave as their resting place.

Kerio Valley and Rift valley

The views you get when you stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint on your way to Naivasha are nothing compared to the ones you find here. From Chororget Church Rock Viewpoint and Samich Resort,at the border of Uasin Gishu overlooking Elgeyo Marakwet county, you get the panoramic picturesque views of Kerio Valley and the Rift Valley. A while back, paragliding used to take place here but it has been put hold due to risk factors. You can enjoy watching safari rallies uninterruptedly from here too.

Stay at Naiberi River Campsite and Resort

This is one of the best camping sites and resort in Eldoret. Even Bill Gates has stayed here before. So, it really is one of the best. With a wide array of accommodation options ranging from camping, dorms, log cabins and executive rooms, with a swimming pool, Naiberi offers tranquility and serenity you can’t find anywhere else. The underground stone cave bar and restaurant is the highlight of the night with a bonfire in the center. The rooms are all made of stone including the bathrooms and the amenities.  It gives you the Flintstones vibes.  The place is also ideal for team building, fishing, exploring Sirikwa holes and conferencing.

Run with champion marathoners at Kapsait Nike Training Camp

There is nothing that humbled me as being at this camp. My travel squad and I got the chance to sit down and have a talk with the marathoners. Everybody in the room has won something and you couldn’t even tell from the way they were humbly introducing themselves. The Kenyan marathon runner Brigid Jepchirchir Kosgei, who won the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Marathon and the 2019 and 2020 London Marathon also train here.

If you get there early enough, you can catch them as they do their morning training and join in.The breathtaking views and landscapes that are found on your way from Eldoret town to this place will have you rethink on your life purpose.

Shopping at Rupa’s Mall

This is one of the largest malls in Kenya located in the heart of Eldoret town. The artificial waterfall at the entrance will make you stare like a child who has seen a sweet. The mall has a supermarket, club, barber shops, gym, wines and spirit shops, banks and even a cinema. There is ample parking spaces available.

What is the point of exploring all these places and not finish up with a leg shaking session? Eldoret has quite a number of clubs but Club Timba holds the title as the club that gives other clubs sleepless nights. You can also try Black bamboo, Eclipse, Rumours, 64 and the Well Irish Pub.

In conclusion, there is a lot of unexplored areas in the North Rift that need to be brought into the limelight and promoted as tourist destination sites. Let’s explore and promote local tourism.

Eldoret is 323 km from Nairobi , 114 km from Kisumu , and 126 km from Nakuru . From Eldoret to the Uganda border at Malaba is 127 km.

Easy Coach has buses to Nairobi . There are also bus lines which go from Eldoret to Kampala , Uganda. There are matutus, privately owned vehicles frequently mini-buses, to Nakuru , Nyahururu , Kitale , and Kisumu . An 11-seat van from Eldoret to Nairobi costs Ksh 1000 and takes 6 hours. An 11-seat van from Eldoret to Malaba on the Kenya/Uganda border costs Ksh 500 and takes 3 hours.

The railway network in Western Kenya is under rehabilitation and passenger trains from Nairobi are expected to return in late 2024 or early 2025. Travel times are expected to be quite long as the 100 year old network meanders through the landscape.

Rimoi National Reserve is the home to the largest herds of elephants in East Africa. The reserve was re opened on 8 th of March 2016. The game reserve is located in the middle of the Kerio Valley in Elgeiyo Marakwet County. It is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service and the reserve is 40 km from Iten town, the world’s athletics capital.

The park neighbors the homes of the Kalenjin people, best known as the “running tribe”, they however practice agriculture too. Adjacent to Rimoi and part of the same ecosystem but on the other side of the Kerio River, is Lake Kamnarok. Lake Kamnarok is a seasonal lake in Kenya, at the base of the Kerio Valley.

Besides the numerous wildlife found in this game reserve, the park is also a bird haven.

Overview – Background information about Rimoi National Reserve

Rimoi National Reserve is situated within the Rift Valley Province of Kenya It is quite small only 66 km² but set inside a conservation area 5 times greater and is located 30 km from Iten town along the Kabarnet – Eldoret road on the floor of the Kerio Valley. It flanks the Kerio River on its eastern side.

The entrance is 3 km from the Biretwo – Arror road and 26 km from Biretwo. Rimoi Game Reserve is slowly turning into a tourist haven, especially with the rehabilitation taking place. The park is known to be a home of s maller mammals like dikdik, impala, bush pig, warthog, monkeys, civet, genet, and pangolin.

Elephants are the only large animals found in the park. The elephants at the reserve move together in a group of about 100, compared to other elephant herds that move in pairs, or in a group of three or five. However, they can best be seen at night when they are feeding.

Rimoi Reserve is also home to other unique wildlife that includes the world’s rare white crocodile at the campsite along Kerio River and other reptiles like Agama and other lizards, tortoise, and different types of snakes

Birdlife is abundant and various, with weavers, sunbirds, pigeons, honeyguides, hornbills, and turacos particularly prevalent. In the rainy season, a seasonal lake called Tabar forms in a depression and this attracts water birds including, sometimes, rare migrants.

Though renowned for its large herds of elephants, other small mammals and animals can also be seen at the reserve some of which are; buffalo, zebras, impalas, giraffe, monkeys, bush pigs, warthogs, dikdik, pangolins, civet, and genet.  snakes, tortoise agama, and porcupines among others.

 Reptiles include; crocodiles, Agama and other lizards, tortoises, and many snakes.

There are numerous campsites within and out of the park where tourists can pitch their tents and wake up to the chattering of birds in the wilderness, tents and other camping facilities are also available for hire.

Nature guided walks

There are some walking trails within the park where tourists can adventure wildlife, birds ad tree species or to the dry Kilmarnock lake. Tourists should not engage in this activity alone without an armed ranger as the elephants tend to be very wild. Walks can be taken to the old campsites.

Birding can be done at Rimoi reserves endowed with many bird species from turacos, honeyguides, pigeons, sunbirds, Weaver’s, and hornbills some of these are migratory birds while others residential the best place to engage in this activity is in the Lake Tabar.

Visit Cheptarit hill

For tourists who enjoy the beauty of nature, they can hike up to the Cheptarit hill where you can have mouth-dropping views of the valley alongside beautiful hot springs, the place is also very rich in culture and history.

Visit the Chebloch Gorge

Chebloch gorge is a major tourist attraction in the area. The Kerio river from the nearby Elgeyo escarpments cuts into the gorge, especially during the rainy season to depths more than 20 meters. This forms a magnificent view of the gorge with a backdrop of the Elgeyo escarpment. Being a tourist attraction, the young men entertain guests by diving in the crocodile-infested river for a fee.

How to get to Rimoi National Reserve

By road : use your own vehicle, public transport, or tour van. Rimoi National Reserve Elgeyo Marakwet County is about 300 km from Nairobi about a five-six hour drive. Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction. Brief Description        

Reporting to Commercial Manager, the ideal candidate will be tasked with promoting and selling KQ products and value add services (ancillary) at both B2C & B2B level, provide personalized travel related services to internal and external customers and demonstrate ownership and execution of Sales process.

Detailed Description         Ticketing

• Locate available flights; Check on best connections if more than one flight is involved, determine fare costs to maximize on revenue while helping passengers to save.
• Help customers find the right itinerary that fit their needs; apply upgrades on additional costs to generate more revenue.
• Provide with details and accurate fare quotes to all KQ clients to provide the best applicable fare and generate revenue.
• Handling unaccompanied minors, cancel or change reservations when requested by clients, reissue, revalidate tickets and collect applicable fees thus generate income.
• Action queues appropriately and inform passengers on flight changes, confirmations, ticketing time limits, handle special requests like seats preference, meals, baggage requirements waitlists and confirmations, to ensure customers’ requests are met and reduce GDS costs.
• Highlight to customers the legal requirements covering their journey such as passports, visa, and health requirements, check in place, departure time and baggage allowance to avoid inconveniencing the passengers and ensure seamless service.
• Actin VMPDS, selling excess baggage, handling cool fliers (student fares) to increase sales and passenger loyalty.
• Correct CRS usage and queue management to reduce cost and increase revenue generation.

Customer Service

• Actively build relationships with clients by offering good customer service to retain and recruit new customers.
• Support travel agents by efficiently assisting them with their general enquiries to improve relationship with the travel market and increase agent’s loyalty.
• Providing online assistance for reservation, check in, payment to maximize sales and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Actively involved in suggesting new ideas and providing recommendations on the improvement of services provided, this increases revenue and ensures KQ success as market leading airline.
• Handle customers complaints (denied boarding, baggage etc to ensure customer satisfaction and retention
• Facilitate and coordinate tracing of lost, delayed, or misdirected baggage for customers and ensure safe delivery of the said baggage to win passengers confidence.
• Handling GSA services –Ticket issue to increasing KQ network through joint ventures.
• Handle flight schedule disruptions to ensure passengers have a seamless service throughout their journey and Carry out service recovery.
• Handle general inquiries for both internal and external customers and develop and maintain customer database to enhance customer loyalty and market intelligence.

 Documentation

• Reconcilingof sales returns to account for personal daily sales.
• Processing refund and ensuring passengers are advised accordingly on the amount refundable for reimbursement on unutilized tickets.
• Writing of miscellaneous charge orders (MCO) and invoicing to ensure timely and accurate payment of issued ticket to both direct and indirect corporate.

 Sales

• Generate auxiliary revenue through sale of Travel insurance, KQ holiday packages and any other ancillary products that are available.
• Sell KQ products through telephone, e-mails to maximize on sales and enhance accessibility.

Job Requirements        

• Must have Basic Airline fare and ticketing training.
• 1-2 years’ experience in a sales role will be an added advantage.
• Sound knowledge of domestic & international travel requirements/trend/availability.
• Exemplary sales skill and customer-oriented approach.
• Good knowledge of computer reservation systems (CRS).
• Ability to interact, communicate & negotiate effectively.
