The default is usually a money belt or fanny pack that you wear around your waist, and may tuck away under your clothes. But there are much better options out there for keeping your stuff safe, like neck wallets. This review looks at money belts, neck wallets, leg and wrist wallets, belt wallets, bras and clothes with hidden pockets.

Just Use a Small Daypack

Another alternative is to use a small daypack to hold your valuables. Even better is a small bag that you can sling in front of your body, making it harder for pickpockets to access. Keep your wallet, passport, and essentials in the daybag, but have a small stash of cash in a pocket for incidentals so you won’t have to pull out your wallet for every transaction. We bought an Eagle Creek daypack in 2003 (it came as a zip on addition to a large backpack).

It’s been slammed around in airplanes, ferries and Thai longboats, shoved on the top of shared vans, and dropped into the luggage compartment of trains. It’s traveled through over 20 countries.

I also used it almost every day for a few years just as a bag to carry my odds and ends to work and back. I’ve never had to do anything other than wipe it off occasionally. Not a stitch or repair.

It finally tore in the bottom and on the shoulder on our trip to Ecuador and Mexico in 2017, after 14 years of hard use.

These days, we’re trying out a top-loading Pacsafe anti-theft adventure backpack . This new backpack is a thing of beauty. It’s surprisingly lightweight, has a padded tablet sleeve, a wealth of pockets and locking zippers I’m still deciphering, and anti-theft Slashguard stainless steel wire mesh embedded into it. At 18 inches high and 9 inches wide, it’s small enough to use as a personal item with most airlines, and it hold a LOT.

We haven’t used it for much more than day use on a few hikes, but it’s been very comfortable for a couple of hours on the trails. It seems to be well made, and like it will last a long time.

Do It Old School

The most old fashioned, and probably the most secure, way to protect your stuff is to sew an extra pocket into the inside of your shirt or pants, and store some emergency money and a credit card there. If you’re not a seamstress, you can use a safety pin to attach a few dollars to the inside of your clothes.

Sliding a $100 into your shoe also works, though it’s easy to lose, and can end up smelling like dirty cheese. Women can even slip a little cash inside the lining of a bra.

Keeping Your Stuff Safe

Probably the best defense against getting robbed or pick pocketed is how you act.

• Don’t flash cash, jewelry, electronics or anything expensive and keep out of dangerous areas, especially at night.
• Don’t put everything in one place. Keep a second stash stash of money in your pocket or somewhere else easily accessible. That way, you don’t have to fumble with your hidden stash when you pay for something. It also acts as a lure for pickpockets – they’ll go for the easy $$ and leave the neck wallet alone.
• If you do get held up, just hand over your wallet and money. It’s not worth getting killed over material things that can be replaced.

The Bottom Line

Overall, we found that a neck wallet is a good combination of security, accessibility and comfort.

What you choose also depends on how much stuff you have. For us, the days of traveling with a single passport, a credit card, and a little cash are gone for now. We now have more essentials to carry wherever we go, including four passports, wet wipes, Kid’s Tylenol, lollipops for air pressure changes in airplanes, travel insurance information, boarding passes and so on.

We shove all of the non-essential stuff in a small backpack, and the passports, credit cards and cash in a neck wallet worn under our clothes. The backpack acts as a pretty good lure for pickpockets and thieves. If the backpack’s lost or stolen, it’s a hassle, but nothing’s too hard to replace.

Useful and I love the comparison chart. It makes things really easy. I use a daypack its easy and I hate poking things while traveling. Will look into neck wallets. Money belt and belt wallets don’t really work for me. Its too hot here in India so no additional belts please. Usually I don’t wear a belt (salwar kameez and loose trousers don’t require them) so no belt wallet.

Great advice but one tip though. I’d always recommend going with a money belt over a neck wallet because thieves can see the string around your neck. In Ho Chi Min City, one of my friends was wearing a neck wallet and a motorbike came by with a knife and slashed it off her. From then on, I only use money belts. I have this TravelMore Wallet and it has lasted me for years and highly recommend it.

Don’t count on slash proof to deter a robber. Just this past Thursday 3/15/18 a robber (who claimed he had a knife) used tremendous force to rip a fanny back off me that was securely strapped to my body. No more visible stuff for me. This was in a medium size town where I live, at a big box store in a good neighborhood ! Dug out my waist and neck pouches and adapting them to make invisible. I wear socks all the time, so will probably use something there too. Latest news showed police found a weapons stash and burglar tools in his hotel room.

Great article and very useful as I researched options for our upcoming trip to Europe. I decided on the Pacsafe Vibe 20L due to the airlines new 10″ wide restrictions. 20 liters should be fine. It will be paired with a belt/inside pants wallet. Question I have is this: how often have you been pickpocketed/robbed and where? We’ve found that Italy is absolutely the worst for common pickpockets but I’m curious how other spots fare.

Hi John, knock on wood but we’ve never been pickpocketed or robbed in any of the countries we’ve been to. We’ve heard some horror stories though from fellow travelers so the truth is, it does happen. That said, we’re always crazy vigilant when we travel, stay away from large crowds with tons of people if we can, we watch each others backs, always down play our perceived wealth and we tend to only keep a few dollars in easy to access places that a pickpocket is likely to strike first. Can’t say where the worst places are these days since the bad ones keep changing. Good choice on the Pacsafe, it’s a great bag. Have a fun time in Europe!

You say that a fanny pack is generally considered to be one of the dorkiest things you can wear, why is that? I feel that people keep saying this because they heard someone else say it and no one wants to be the first to admit that they are useful, comfortable, and handy because they don’t want to seem uncool to others.

It really helped when you said that we should not put everything in one place, so we need to keep some in a different pocket or place that is easily accessible for us. I will keep that in mind so that my belongings are safe, so I might buy a couple of women’s genuine leather card holder. It will give me peace of mind that my cards would be separate from each other, especially the one with the most amount in it.

Sure, passport holders like the Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet may not be the sexiest travel accessories, but they're incredibly useful when it comes to ensuring your international getaway goes smoothly. Losing your passport is an excellent way to ruin your trip and cause yourself an excessive amount of headaches. Replacing a passport requires a trip to an embassy or consulate and hours (or days!) of waiting. That's why so many travelers choose to use passport holders and cases. They're small, secure, and ensure that your documents are always safely stored and protected. Read on for all the details on how this one from Venture 4th performed on our travels. 

Design: Standard, but useful 

Depending on what your needs are, you may find the design of the Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet quite appealing. Measuring approximately 8 inches long and 6 inches wide, it's a standard wearable passport holder with a thin strap that hangs around your neck. It can be worn under or over your clothing during travel, though we'd encourage everyone to think twice about wearing it over your clothing. 

Having a very obvious passport holder on your body can indicate that you're a tourist who isn't paying attention. That reads as an invitation to thieves in parts of the world where pickpocketing and petty crime is common, so instead, you may want to wear the holder under your clothing. Alternatively, you could decide against wearing it at all and use it as a neat and organized way to carry your travel documents, which is what we did. 

While not as minimalist as a basic passport cover, it’s still quite slim and lightweight.

This neck wallet is very similar to other wearable passport holders we tested in terms of capacity. It can hold two passports as well as a hotel room key, credit cards, and rolled up bills and loose change. It doesn't have a large back pocket like some others do, but it has more space than holders that are designed to be more like billfolds. It also has a clear ID window. If you're looking for a passport holder to use as a protective cover for your passport , then this may not be the best choice for you—it's much more like a very small purse than a case.

We should note that the Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet is ideal for safely carrying your passport, but it isn't very visually appealing. It comes in your choice of several basic colors: black, brown, beige, gray, green, and silver. If you're looking for a fashionable travel accessory , though, you may want to opt instead for a more modern and trendy billfold-style passport cover rather than a wearable one.

Portability: Easy to carry or hide

Points for portability! The Venture 4th RFID Neck Pouch is small and compact. While not as minimalist as a basic passport cover, it’s still quite slim and lightweight. It’s easy to pack and comfortable to wear under clothing. Because the pockets aren’t quite large enough to hold a cell phone, it sits a little slimmer than larger options we tested that can hold bulkier items. We were able to fit two passports in the zippered pocket and wear it under a button-down shirt without anyone being able to notice it was there. It does make a bit of a crinkling noise when you first begin to use it, though that got quieter in out testing after it had been folded and used for a few hours. 

This neck pouch is a useful travel accessory even if you choose not to wear it, especially for travelers who like to carry printouts of confirmations and travel plans. It’s small enough to toss in a carry-on backpack during travel and stash in a hotel room safe after arriving at your destination. It’s also water-resistant, so it could be a smart buy if you’re headed to a muggy or rainy destination. 

It’s easy to pack and comfortable to wear under clothing.

While it has fewer pockets than some of the competition, we preferred the slightly smaller size as it felt less noticeable under clothing. Our larger-sized cell phone didn’t fit well, but a smaller one or older model might. 

It’s worth pointing out that this neck wallet could make a great gift for adventurous travelers. It’s small enough to carry in any bag, making it ideal for backpackers . Travelers who are jumping from place to place and using budget transportation options need to be especially careful with important travel documents, and this holder will certainly help with that.

Safety: RFID-blocking technology

If you're planning to carry your credit cards in the Venture 4th passport holder, you'll appreciate that it uses RFID-blocking technology. RFID technology allows your credit card information to be read electronically, which is helpful for making purchases. But unfortunately, thieves can use those radio waves to steal your information electronically. By incorporating materials that block RFIDs, the Venture 4th keeps your personal info safe, even if someone does attempt to steal it.

Price: Not going to break the bank

The Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet has a suggested price of around $30, but it’s available from nearly every online retailer, including the Venture 4th website, for under $20. That puts it in line with other wearable passport holders we tested. It’s very affordable and probably worth picking up if you’re a frequent international traveler. 

The Venture 4th RFID Neck Wallet is a useful travel accessory even if you choose not to wear it.

Competition: Similar to other options

Winks Travel Neck Wallet : The Venture 4th RFID Neck Pouch and the Travel Neck Wallet from Winks Travel ( view on Amazon ) are very similar. Differences are minimal: The Venture 4th is shorter by about an inch and lacks the large back pocket we used for a cell phone on the Winks Travel Neck Wallet. We tested both and found that the Venture 4th option sits a bit slimmer under clothing, but holds a bit less, so the choice should just come down to what size holder you prefer. You can find them for a very similar price online.

Anthropologie Whitney Winkler Posie Passport Holder : If you want more of a passport cover than a wearable holder, consider the Whitney Winkler Posie Passport Holder from Anthropologie, which we also tested. It has a modern, feminine design that looks like it was tailor-made for trendy millennials. Unlike the Venture 4th holder, it’s more of a protective case than a bag and won’t hold much beyond a passport and a few credit cards. It retails for $24, making it a little more than the Venture 4th option.

Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.

The Venture 4th RFID Neck Pouch isn’t the most creative or novel piece of travel gear we’ve ever tested, but it’s small, affordable, and does what it claims. While it may not be the first choice for stylish travelers, the low price makes it a good buy for international travelers who need a secure way to stash travel documents.
