Road Trip Guide: Traveling Cross-country on U.S. Route 6

What to know before you hit the road.

If you dream of taking a cross-country road trip from the Pacific to the Atlantic, then you should definitely consider heading west on U.S. Route 6. As the longest, continuous transcontinental highway in America, this 3,200-mile-long stretch of road takes you through 14 states, starting in California and terminating in Massachusetts.

Also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, U.S. Route 6 is unique in that the towns and cities it intersects are pretty arbitrary — many of the places you drive through feel almost forgotten. And while traveling along one of the oldest and longest roads in the country, you may feel a bit like a pioneer, rediscovering overlooked corners of America.

Where to find U.S. Route 6

US Route 6 is a diagonal route that’s been largely modified over the years. Currently, the route begins in Bishop, California, and officially ends in Provincetown , Massachusetts.

Where To Stop

Pass through farmlands and ranches in California’s valleys as you head northeast. For your first pit stop, pull over at the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Sparks, Nevada. With more than 6 million acres of mountains juxtaposed with deep desert canyons, it’s the largest national forest in the lower 48 and, undoubtedly, one of the most breathtaking.

It’s not simply beautiful, though. This National Park packs some serious history. It’s estimated to contain upwards of 100,000 prehistoric archeological sites, and has volcanic peaks that date back to an even older time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Certain areas of this park allow overnight camping if a permit is granted, so be sure to plan ahead for a night under the stars.

While passing from Utah to Colorado, you’ll be driving alongside Interstate 70 until you reach Denver. This is a great place to get out of the car and stretch your legs. Catch a game at Coors Field — the home of the Colorado Rockies — or, for the musically inclined, get tickets for a show at the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, which boasts unbeatable views of the Rocky Mountains. Another point of interest in Denver is Union Station, a still-working public transportation hub built in 1917. Union Station is also praised for its dining and shopping scene, meaning there are ample opportunities to refuel.

The next few states will be marked primarily by rural landscapes, though we encourage you to pull over in any of the small towns you encounter. There, you’ll meet friendly locals and villages brimming with American history. Take in the prairie lands of Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois, as well as the blocks of pioneer homes that date back to a simpler, easier times.

Travelers on Route 6 can confidently stop at any eclectic roadside shop or museum and find something unusual or entertaining.

After leaving Indiana, you’ll enter Ohio, where you can visit Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though it’s largely a tourist destination (some 9 million visitors have entered since its opening in 1995), it should not be overlooked for those who idolized and embraced the musical phenomenon and the artists that led its evolution. After all, it's home to the largest collection of rock and roll artifacts in the world.

After Cleveland, you'll approach the final group of states that make up this behemoth road trip — and find yourself officially on the East Coast. While driving 400 miles across Pennsylvania, the most tourist-oriented of the Route 6 states, you'll encounter Pine Creek Gorge (also known as Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon) and the Kinzua Skywalk: a walkable railroad bridge that was once the world’s longest and highest of its kind.

Don't miss the Dark Sky Preserve in Cherry Springs State Park, where you can enjoy incredible views of the Milky Way, thanks to the area's light pollution-free night skies.

After passing through New York’s Orange County, the suburbs of Connecticut, and the city of Providence , Rhode Island, you’ll reach your final destination: Provincetown, Massachusetts. It’s here you’ll find the Pilgrim Monument, a 252-foot tower that was completed in 1910 to commemorate the Mayflower passengers. Climb the tower and take in the beautiful, hard-earned views of the Cape.

Good to know

U.S. Route 6 is an easy drive, so you can accomplish the route fairly quickly (about three weks). But if you rush from one oceanside town to another, you'll miss some of the more interesting roadside attractions. Budget at least six weeks to do this trip properly. And with any interstate road trip, be sure to keep a close eye on road signs, as speed limits and traffic rules can vary wildly across the United States.

Drive Pennsylvania Scenic Route 6

Those in the know are aware that the second longest road in the USA is Route 6. It stretches from Massachusetts to California and is also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, in honor of Union Civil War veterans.

The Pennsylvania segment of Route 6 passes through eleven northern PA counties. It covers 403 miles, and offers a scenic and historic experience that drivers will love. Most of the route is two lane, and invites slowing down and exploring. From east to west, here are some highlights not to be missed!

Grey Towers National Historic Site

Steamtown National Historic Site

Before there was electricity or gasoline, America was powered by steam. Steamtown National Historic Site. You can tour the railroad museum and ride on an historic railroad in downtown Scranton. Visit the Round-house, turntable, and repair shop. The development of the museum is ongoing so you will probably see some of the construction, and also rolling stock awaiting restoration.   There are many old locomotives. The museum is located where the old Scranton yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad used to be. Hungry? Go casual at Little Pizza Heaven or POSH at Scranton Club.

Susquehanna River

Pass north of Scranton and then enjoy a truly scenic drive as Route 6 flirts with the Susquehanna river from Clarks Summit to Tunkhannock. You’ll cross the river at Jeld-Wen, then continue west. Situated in the Tioga River Valley, the small town of Mansfield may make a good pit stop. Reviewers recommend Yorkholo for a hearty meal or refreshments. Or, head onward to nearby Wellsboro to have a meal there at the Penn Wells Hotel, or the Wellsboro Diner.

Scenic Vistas

By I, Ruhrfisch, CC BY-SA 3.0,

The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, also known as Pine Creek Gorge, is a forty-seven mile long forested canyon in the middle Tioga State Forest. To enjoy the views from the Route 6 vicinity, we recommend the Colton Point Overlook and the Leonard Harrison State Park Overlook. Take the Pine Creek Gorge trail for a hike or bike adventure, it stretches 30 miles to Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania.

Cherry Springs State Park

If you plan your trip right, you can wait till after sunset go stargazing at Cherry Springs State Park, near Coudersport. This is one of the darkest places in the Northeast after dark, so you get the whole sweep of the starry night. You can get close to the stars, at Astronomy Field, high up on a 2,300-foot mountain. The surrounding Susquahannok State Forest shields any ambient light. The latitude of the park gives a fabulous look at the nucleus of the Milky Way Galaxy and a 360 degree view of the night sky.

Pennsylvania Lumber Museum

The Pennsylvania Lumber Museum near Galeton, in Potter County, tells the story of the lumber industry of a century and more ago. The site includes a fascinating, working historic saw mill. There is also a recreated lumber camp. The many exhibits and collections will keep the whole family occupied, as they show you a slice of logging life. For a meal it’s the Brick House Deli or the Ox Yoke Inn.

Zippo Attractions

Drive west through Croudersport and Port Allegheny, then take 219 to go north to Bradford for a zippy side trip. There is a whole culture of Zippo lighter collectors; but even if you are not one of them, you will be fascinated by the Zippo Lighter Museum in Bradford. There is a “Zippo” car and a giant lighter to welcome you to the museum, as well as a USA flag made out of, yes, you guessed it, Zippo lighters. We like the display of the Zippo lighters that still work after they were run over by heavy equipment or other mishaps. The displays of case knives are an added plus. You can even watch employees repairing Zippo lighters. The whole museum is high quality. Eat at Beefeaters, or the Kabob’s at the Option House.

Conneaut Lake Park

Conneaut Lake Park has been an amusement destination for more than a century, since 1892 to be precise. Most folks will tell you it is a great place for families for small children, who want to have a fun but low key vintage amusement park experience. Historic thought it may be, it is very much a lively summer resort and amusement park, today. Vintage roller coaster aficionados come from around the world to ride the Blue Streak, the old wooden roller coaster. For a meal with a great view of the lake from any table, dine at Silver Shores.

Drive Cross Country on US Route 6

What’s the longest Federal Highway in the USA?  US Route 20. What’s the SECOND longest (and longest CONTIGUOUS) highway?   US 6!

Map of USA with Route 6 in Red from Massachusetts to California

Table of Contents

US Route 6 History

The historic highway, also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, is now 3,205 miles long.

Before 1964, when California renumbered its roads, and Route 6 ran coast to coast from Provincetown, Massachusetts, to Long Beach, California, Route 6 was the longest highway in the land – at 3,652 miles.

Now, driving US Route 6 will bring you through 14 states and some of the best small towns and cities in America that, before establishing the Interstate Highway system, had their moments in the sun.

Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach CA

U.S. Route 6 Terminus

Historic Route 6 begins and ends in flamboyant, artsy, touristy, entertainment-rich Oceanside towns.  Provincetown, MA , in Cape Cod, on the Atlantic Ocean, draws playwrights, gay activists, and many tourists every summer.

Long Beach, CA, on the Pacific Ocean, an outer borough of Los Angeles, is rich in the glitz of a similar sort.

What To Expect On US 6

What’s in between is a virtual timeline of American history. Revolutionary War sites in New England give way to pioneer homes in the plains and prairies of Iowa and Nebraska. And then eventually to the stark silver and gold mining camps in Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California.

On its way across the United States, Route 6 travels through two towns called Brooklyn, and neither is in New York.

It touches two oceans, runs along the shore of one Great Lake (Erie), crosses most of the country’s major rivers, traverses five state capitals, and climbs, exhilaratingly, up and over the Continental Divide.

It meanders through land both barren and lush.

US 6 takes you from the Technicolor gardens and forests of the East Coast to the sepia tones of the Western desert through some of the friendliest cities and towns in our country’s midsection.

Most are not tourist destinations. You’d likely never know about them except that they are on what was once the main cross-country route.

Sign at Loveland Pass on the Continental Divide with Rocky Mountains in the background.

But for road-trippers, that’s part of the joy of discovery. In many of these locales, inhabitants welcome strangers with open arms, introducing travelers to the best places where they eat and shop.

Plan Six Weeks On US Route 6

To do the whole route justice, plan to spend at least six weeks on the road.  Of course, you might be tempted to idle in resort areas and larger cities, which will extend your trip.

If you’re in a rush (besides the point of a two-lane highway trip), you can drive in half the time by picking and choosing what is most important to you.

You can also break up the journey into the following segments (designed to begin and end in cities with accessible airports).

It is a dream of mine at age of 65 to travel cross country to see all the free sights I am able to.

We love to fuss over cross country travelers on Route 6. If you are truly crossing the USA on 6 let me buy you a cup of coffee at the Red Rose Diner, 526 Main Street, Towanda, Pa 18848

Do you know where in Long Beach there is still a sign for this highway? I’d love pictures in both 😉

I live in Long Beach, and as far as I know, there is only one plaque marking the western terminus of U.S. Route 6. It is located on the South side of Ocean Blvd at the intersection with Long Beach Blvd. It is sadly forgotten through most of California.

I found it, covered with foliage, when I was there in 2011. It was put up in 1953 and sadly forgotten. Thanks for commenting. Malerie

Story: 45 Pics That'll Make You SOO Proud Of The Midwest" / Location: Somewhere in the Midwest... / Image: Chas Wiederhold

Over the past year, a fair amount of travel concepts, destinations, photos, and stories have come across our desks. And don't get us wrong, they're all special. (Travel, whether it's in a location on the oppostie side of the globe, or to a neighborhood just up the road, is a vital and inspiring part of the human experience.) But let's be honest, some articles just hit you differently. And some places leave you pining, thinking, and dreaming far longer than others. Here, then, is our gift to you: a collection of the "Travel" pieces that made the past twelve months the most daydream-filled year on record. - - - TOP TRAVEL PIECES of the past year Retreat To This Ohio Castle (& Leave Your Phone At Home) "Think Games of Thrones meets Grimm's Fairy tales. Ravenwood Castle is the perfect (non-scary) marriage of the two." Everything about this middle-of-nowhere bed and breakfast is designed to be a true getaway. No cable TV. No wi-fi. No reliable cell service. Go ahead and dive in, friends. You don't know how bad you needed it till you give it a try. 45 Pics That'll Make You Soo Proud Of The Midwest "I've lived my whole life wondering why everyone who is smart, talented, and creative moves away from a place I love. [...] I want an audience to grasp my fixation on this subject of pride for place. I don't want to be a townie alien anymore. I want to be someone who says, 'I love where I'm from.'" - Chas Weiderhold, who biked 2600 miles across the Midwest. 24 Hours In Amish Country When you live in the city, you might forget how different things can look and feel just a short distance away. Holmes County, home to Ohio's Amish Country, is the definition of that phenomeon. This is a place where time slows down and cars share the road with horse-drawn buggies. It's a world away. And it is wonderful. Discover The Wonder Of Rock Climbing At Red River Gorge Because taking a place that you already know is super-special and discovering something that makes you see it in an altogether new light (and with an even-deeper level of respect) is a pretty magical experience. Plus, I mean those pics! This Gorgeous Beach Is Only Six Hours Away. ... And It's In Canada You can put all those "Eh" / "aboot" / maple syrup & hockey quips away ( for now, at least.) Rondeau Provincial Park, located on a sand spit jutting out from Ontario into Lake Erie, is straight-up beautiful. No jokes about it. A Day in Rabbit Hash When a dog is the mayor of the town, you know this is a place that does things right. Put-In-Bay: The Tiny Ohio Island You Should Know About "Welcome to Put-in-Bay, where golf carts are the preferred transport. Located on South Bass Island in northern Ohio, this destination has a split personality that ensures everyone has an unforgettable time. (Think Gatlinburg-meets-Key West. On steroids.)" Um, what?! Consider us intrigued. Welcome To Clifton, Ohio. It's Gorgeous. This is one of the year's most popular & beloved Travel stories. And it's easy to see why. An old mill resting idyllically atop pristine waterfalls. Clean sunlight sifting calmly through the trees. You can pretty much feel the tranquility radiating from the pics. Take a breath (preferably a deep one) and enjoy. Yellow Springs: A Day Trip Worthy of Your Ohio Bucket List The comedian Dave Chappelle lives there. But beyond a possible celeb-sighting, this hippy dippy town has lots of other aspects that'll keep you entertained. Take the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, for example. It's gorgeous. The Abandoned Kentucky Ski Resort That Still Has Plenty To Offer So apparently, back in the '80s, Kentucky had a ski resort But without snow, that didn't last too long. Still, a trip to General Butler State Resort, which is perched on the hilltops above the picturesque Ohio River valley community of Carrolton, is more than worth your while. Walkabout: The Homes of Hyde Park Hyde Park oozes charm. We know this. But the reason this particular "Walkabout" gets the nod is fairly simple. That Mushroom House on Erie Ave. It's wackadoodle -- and awesome. Madison: Indiana's Own Piece of the South Referred to as "America's Hometown," the river village of Madison, Ind. prides itself on its steamboat heritage and historic preservation. A Walk Back in Time: Ripley, OH Just 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati (and located on the river), Ripley will remind you of a simpler time. And sometimes that's all we need to repair our faith in humanity. On the Road: Asheville, NC The 5+ hour drive is spectacular in its own right, but then you arrive. And it somehow gets even better. Be sure to visit The Biltmore Estate and, of course, take a leisurely stroll through Asheville's quirky downtown. Bonus : 10 Must-Visit Ohio Destinations Because a single destination isn't good enough for "good measure," we've decided to give you 10. - - - Now it's on you. Grab the calendar, plan some epic trips, and get explorin'!

18 Driveable Vacation Spots and Places To Visit in The US Within 12 Hours For Most Americans

lehigh valley

In the past two years, the American Road Trip came roaring back. If you’ve caught the road trip bug and can stay places longer and work remotely, there are a lot of fantastic vacation spots across America to explore.

We’ve gathered places to visit in the U.S. within one day’s drive for more than a majority of people. I’ve confirmed through correspondence with these cities that 50% or more of the U.S. population can drive to these destinations in 12 hours or less.

Driveable Vacation Spots and Places To Visit in the US

West Coasters may be a little bummed to read this list. Still, as most of the American population is gathered on the East Coast and Midwestern cities, destinations in those regions dominate this list of vacation spots and places to visit in the US.

So whether you’re looking for new vacation spots in your area or to go on a longer road trip, I hope this list of places to visit in the U.S. gives you a new idea!

1. Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania

Set in the Pennsylvania countryside, Lehigh Valley , is an affordable and family-friendly destination is within a day’s drive of 73% of the US population.

The Lehigh Valley area consists of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and other charming small towns with tons to see and explore.

Opening in mid-May, Dorney Park and its waterpark and Planet Snoopy offer over 100 rides for young ones. In addition, the Crayola Experience in Easton has dozens of hands-on, creative activities, including making and naming your own Crayola crayon to take home.

You can hike, bike, or run on their extensive trail network, including the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and the bucket-list Appalachian Trail.

Or enjoy mother nature’s gifts at one of their 30 wineries. Lehigh Valley is considered an American Viticultural Area, a federally designated wine-grape-growing region like Napa Valley, just a lot closer to home.

If you love Williamsburg’s historical experience and centuries-old buildings, this region even more!  These landmarks are original 18th-century buildings from Moravian settlers who moved to Pennsylvania from the Eastern Czech Republic. Book lovers will want to step foot into the Moravian Book shop, the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world, dating back to 1745.

“The Steelstacks, located in Bethlehem, is one of the best places to spend an evening in the Lehigh Valley and one of the best  things to do in Pennsylvania “, said Melanie from Partners in Fire.

“An old steel mill turned events center, the facility hosts festivals, concerts, outdoor movies, and more all summer. The Steelstacks complex also includes the Artquest Performing Arts Center, food vendors, and a full bar, making it an ideal place to eat, drink, and be merry on those long summer nights.”

With sticker shock gas prices, it’s a bonus that Lehigh Valley is a one-tank trip for those in the Northeast. Further cementing itself as a budget-friendly option, the average daily accommodations rate is $104 a night, which is highly affordable compared to other Northeastern cities.

2. Richmond, Virginia

18 Driveable Vacation Spots and Places To Visit in The US Within 12 Hours For Most Americans

While you might have thought about ( or already visited Washington, DC,) have you considered going to Richmond, Virginia? RVA, as locals call it, is Virginia’s State Capitol, 100 miles south of Washington DC and filled with just as much historical significance as one of America’s oldest cities. Within a 500-mile radius from half of the U.S. population, there’s a little bit of everything in this centrally located destination.

If you are in town for a short time and want to combine many experiences into one, you can travel around town to see the Mending Walls public mural art project on a self-guided journey or bicycle tour. Road Trip #1 – Milwaukee

tourist drive 6

To Do:  Milwaukee is at the top of our list of trips under six hours from St. Louis! Full of incredible history, with beautiful old buildings and fun attractions.  Tour the Harley-Davidson Museum , watch a baseball game at Miller Park or check out the spy-themed bar called The Safe House.  Each June, the city is home to SummerFest – the world’s largest musical festival.  But, don’t worry, there are festivals year round!  They love to celebrate!

To Eat:   CHEESE!   Be sure to try fresh cheese curds!  (And the fried ones!)

Along The Way:  Stop in Springfield, IL to see the only home Abraham Lincoln ever owned as well as his Presidential Library & Museum down the street.  Or if you’re going through Chicago – consider checking out a museum you may not have heard about. The Museum of Broadcast Communications tells the story of television, with great exhibits like their current presentation on the history of Saturday Night Live!

Bill’s Pick:  The Milwaukee Art Museum has giant wings that open and close at the start, and end of the day.   It takes about five minutes for the 90 ton,  217-foot long structure to move into place.   It’s really cool!

Road Trip #2 – Nashville

tourist drive 6

To Do:  Nashville has become one of the most popular destinations in the south.  Broadway is a constant hustle and bustle with honky tonks and shops.   The Country Music Hall of Fame underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and is certainly worthy of a visit.  The Ryman Auditorium, also downtown, is the former home of the Grand Ole Opry and a beautiful venue for a backstage tour or a show.  The Grand Ole Opry House, home of the world’s longest running radio show, is a short drive from downtown.

But, there’s more to Nashville than drinking and country music.  Check out a real life replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park , or tour the Lane Motor Museum – full of European classic cars.

To Eat:  Nashville is famous for “hot chicken” – which can certainly be found all over town.  The original spot however, is  Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack .    Don’t forget to pop into the Goo Goo Cluster Shop across from the Johnny Cash Museum downtown!  Try the peanut butter ones!!

Along The Way:  Metropolis, Illinois is just west of the Kentucky border and is home to Superman!  Take a slight detour to see the world’s tallest Superman statue.   If you want to stay on track – the town of Paducah has the National Quilt Museum , which contains award winning quilts that look like paintings.   Even with this detour, Nashville still qualifies for our list of trips under six hours from St. Louis.

Bill’s Pick:   President Andrew Jackson’s estate is called The Hermitage.   Tour the historic plantation which includes the mansion the Johnson family lived in until 1845.  The property is beautiful and you’ll learn quite a bit about the time period.  Be sure to do the short nature walk behind the mansion.

Road Trip #3 – Indianapolis

tourist drive 6

To Do:   Indy is one of my favorite mid-west cities.  Take a tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – home to the largest single day sporting event in the world, or spend a day at the incredible Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.   Explore White River State Park and take a walk along the Indiana Canal.  For a unique experience – hop on over to the Fountain Square neighborhood and try your hand at Duckpin Bowling.  Be sure to visit Monument Circle and of course, try to find the “Indy” sign downtown and pose as the “I”.

To Eat:   St. Elmo’s Steakhouse is known for having the spiciest shrimp cocktail in the world.

Along The Way:  Stop in Casey, Illinois – the small town full of big things!  Casey is home to the world’s largest rocking chair, wind chime, golf tee, pitch fork and mailbox!  Located right along interstate 70 just about halfway between Indy and St. Louis. Even with a stop in Casey – Indianapolis is still one of the trips under six hours from St. Louis!

Bill’s Pick:   Take a ride in a street legal Indy Car!  The Dallara Indycar Factory offers the experience to visitors as well as racing simulators.

Road Trip #4 – Little Rock

tourist drive 6

To Do:  Little Rock is full of southern hospitality and one of the most underrated southern cities.   Take a stroll along the sculpture walk by the Arkansas River, and stay close to watch the sunset and then see the pedestrian bridges light up at night.   The Clinton Presidential Library is at one end of downtown, with great stops like the Museum of Discovery and the Little Rock River Market down the street.

To Eat:   Ranked as one of the best new “foodie cities” in America by numerous magazines and websites – Little Rock has plenty to offer for all tastes.  Check out a fun diner called “@ (At) The Corner” for breakfast or lunch.

Along The Way:  Coming down highway 55, check out the boyhood home of Johnny Cash in Dyess, Arkansas.  It’s about seven miles off the highway, in the middle of nowhere.  Recently restored to the days when the Cash family lived there after the Great Depression.  You’ll recognize the scenery that was replicated in the film Walk The Line.

Bill’s Pick:   Go just across the river from downtown and take a tour of the U.S.S. Razorback – the WWII submarine that now sits in the river.  It’s a really interesting experience – and you’ll have huge respect for the men and women that work in them!

Road Trip #5 – Cincinnati

tourist drive 6

To Do:  See the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center , Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, or t ake a bridge walk over to the Kentucky side of the Ohio river.  Fans of comics will recognize the Cincinnati Museum as the inspiration for the Justice League Hall of Justice .  Don’t miss visiting the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

To Eat:   The local claim to fame is Skyline Chili – which I personally think is awful.  (But, hey what do I know?)  I much prefer Graeter’s Ice Cream , which is based in Cincy and so delicious!  For a multitude of food options, visit in May during Taste Of Cincinnati.

Along The Way:  Louisville, KY.  Check out the Louisville Slugger Museum , or the Mohammad Ali Center downtown.  For a quirky stop – Col Sanders grave site is a short drive from downtown.

Bill’s Pick:   Visit one of my favorite museums in the U.S. – the American Sign Museum .  This place is amazing!  Over 300 signs, many large and neon from America’s highways and byways.   The visuals are almost overwhelming as you walk through, on a tour of the early days of American cross country travel.

Road Trip #6 – Wichita

tourist drive 6

Oops! Turns out I either drive really fast or just assumed Wichita was closer.  Turns out Wichita is actually about 7 hours from Saint Louis – but definitely still worth the road trip!  Such a great town!

To Do:   After a visit to Wichita, you’ll no longer say “there’s nothing to do in Kansas!”  This hip, mid-west town is full of kind people and lots of interesting things to check out.  You can visit the new Pizza Hut Museum, which is housed in the original Pizza Hut store.   Be sure to visit Old Cowtown for a realistic “old west” experience.   At night, don’t miss the Keeper Of The Plains statue which is surrounded by a ring of fire.

To Eat:  Hands down, my favorite food stop in Wichita is the Old Mill Tasty Shop !  It’s a step back in time, with homemade favorites and incredible milkshakes!  Public At The Brickyard is a close second. Good food and ambiance.

Along The Way:   You’ll probably come up I-70 from St. Louis and pass a handful of interesting stops.  Set up a tour of Warm Springs Ranch, the breeding facility of the Budweiser Clydesdales in Boonville.  Fulton has the National Churchill Museum and a lot of great restaurants a short drive off the interstate.  And, of course, you’ll pass through Kansas City – which is loaded with fun options.  Check out my favorite KC museum – the National Museum of Toys & Miniatures !

Bill’s Pick:   Stop in to Hatman Jack’s and meet the man that has made hats for all kinds of famous people!  He even picked out and fitted a hat for yours truly the last time I was in town!

How to Do a Scenic Drive in the Blackall Ranges

Updated 2023

' src=

Even though the Sunshine Coast Hinterland isn’t as spectacular as the lush and dramatic Gold Coast Hinterland, there’s still plenty to do, including some very pretty scenic drives .

If you’re after some views of the Sunshine Coast, short bushwalks or are keen to poke around local shops, the Blackall Range Tourist Drive (#23) is the perfect choice.

From pretty much anywhere on the coast, you’ll be up in the hinterland within 30-40 minutes. Depending on how much time you have, you could just do the scenic drive and stop at the lookouts. Or you could explore some of the towns and walks along the way.

Views towards the coast from the Blackall Range Tourist Drive

BLACKALL RANGE TOURIST DRIVE (#23)

Just like the Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive (#24) , the Blackall Range Tourist Drive is an official tourist drive on the Sunshine Coast.

You’ll see the brown #23 road signs dotted everywhere along the route. Signage is really excellent so you won’t have any trouble finding your way.

Road sign for Blackall Range Tourist Drive

This scenic drive is really quite fabulous.

Not only do you get picturesque views of the hinterland and the coast , there are also quaint little towns along the way, rainforest walks , waterfalls , lookouts , and plenty of cafés and restaurants to indulge at.

You can easily do this Sunshine Coast scenic drive as a day trip from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast. Alternatively, you could make a weekend of it. There’s plenty of accommodation to choose from in the Sunhine Coast Hinterland.

HOW TO DO THE BLACKALL RANGE SCENIC DRIVE

The Blackall Ranges are about 100km north of Brisbane , and easily accessible from the Bruce Highway.

If you’re already on the Sunshine Coast, you can turn the Blackall Range Tourist Drive into a great scenic drive loop. Or if you want a scenic drive from Noosa to Brisbane, this would be a great alternative to the Bruce Highway.

The Blackall Ranges Scenic Drive is about 55km , which you can comfortably drive in an hour or so. I’ve never managed that though as there are so many spots to stop at.

Anyway, plan at least half day , or better yet a full day, which would make this scenic drive a much more relaxing experience and give you time to explore the region.

STARTING/END POINT

Start either in Nambour in the north or approach the drive from Landsborough in the south. You can then loop back to the coast or back to your starting point by taking the Bruce Highway (not the most inspiring road, I agree) and Steve Irwin Way.

Or if you’ve got plenty of time on your hands, combine it with my suggestion for a Glass House Mountains Scenic Drive , and explore that part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland drives as well.

  • From Nambour: Take Netherton Street up the hill past Nambour General Hospital and simply follow the road. This will turn into Nambour Mapleton Road outside Nambour but you can’t really get lost.
  • From Landsborough: Take Maleny Street , which turns into Landsborough Maleny Road just outside town.

As you can see, we’re really creative when it comes to street names! 🙂

BLACKALL RANGES SCENIC DRIVE: WHAT TO DO AND SEE

No matter where you start from, there’s plenty to see and do along this scenic drive.

But just a note of caution, since I’m not much of a restaurant goer or shopper, you won’t find too many ideas for eating out or shopping here. I’m really more into lookouts and walks than meandering around towns and poking my nose into too many shops (unless they’re bookshops, of course).

1. VISIT THE SUNSHINE COAST HINTERLAND TOWNS: MAPLETON, MONTVILLE & MALENY

Visiting the three “M-towns” – Mapleton, Montville and Maleny – along this route is kind of obligatory.

And admittedly, they are rather neat little towns with Maleny being my favourite by far.

Coming from Nambour, Mapleton is the first town you reach. It’s nice and sleepy with a bakery, pub and a couple of other eateries that can get busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings. There’s also a lovely waterlily pond but what I like is that it’s close to Mapleton Falls National Park with a fabulous (very short) rainforest walk at hand.

From Mapleton, it’s only 6 km until you reach Montville. Along the way, you can catch glimpses of the coast or even veer off at Kondalilla Falls Road for a picnic at Kondalilla Falls National Park .

Montville , in contrast to Mapleton, is that perfect, almost kitschy, little town where you can stuff yourself full of slightly overpriced food, buy pretty things you don’t really need, and eat more chocolate than would ever be good for you.

However, all this comes with gorgeous views for a backdrop.

tourist drive 6

Montville is just a bit too touristy for my liking, which is why I really enjoy Maleny .

It’s got a bit more of a locals’ feel. From Montville, it’s about 16km to Maleny and the drive could be done in 15 minutes. I always seem to dawdle too much though and never get there in under 40 minutes.

Maleny has this incredible gluten-free gelato-selling Maleny Food Co. store , which obviously helps strengthen my conviction that Maleny is the best of the three towns! 🙂

But it’s also got a fabulous main street with some cute cafes and indie shops that sell anything from new & used books, clothing, antiques to gorgeous timber knickknacks, and overall just feels like a real town.

From there, you could head back to Landsborough, a fairly laid-back town, and call it a day.

2. TAKE A SHORT WALK

If you’re keen to stretch your legs a bit, there’s more than enough hiking in the Blackall Ranges to keep you busy for a day.

For an easy stroll through rainforest and dry forest, try the Wompoo Circuit (1.3 km) in Mapleton Falls National Park not far from Mapleton. Most people just walk the 50 m to Mapleton Falls Lookout but you can’t really see the falls so don’t expect too much. The views into the valley are quite nice though.

Strangler fig, Wompoo Circuit, Mapleton Falls National Park

For a longer walk, try the Kondalilla Falls Loop (4.7 km) in Kondalilla National Park (between Mapleton and Montville).

This hike offers picturesque valley views, rainforest, a swimming hole and a gushing waterfall, especially if we’ve had some rain. Expect mozzies and lots of people, it can get very busy, especially on weekends.

Kondalilla National Park

If you’re in Maleny, you could try the Maleny Trail , which takes you on a meander through the town and beyond.

tourist drive 6

Or head to Gardner’s Falls , at the end of Obi Lane South (off Landsborough Maleny Road). There’s a very short walk to a mini cascade and a rock pool that’s quite popular (but not among my favourite spots).

For one of the best rainforest walks on the Sunshine Coast, stop at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve on your way to Landsborough (along Mountain View Road). We always take visitors here, it’s just such a nice spot.

There’s a huge picnic area, a café that serves lovely gluten-free (and non-gf) food, an education centre and a rainforest walk that’s less than 2 km.

Rainforest Walk at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

3. ENJOY THE VIEWS ACROSS THE BLACKALL RANGES

If it’s hot or you’re just not that keen on hiking in the rainforest, you could just stop at the various lookouts. There are plenty.

One of the best ones, especially on a clear winter day, is Dulong Lookout , which gives you fine views over the sprawling coast coming from Nambour.

tourist drive 6

Another one that’s great to stop at is Gerrad’s Lookout , some 7 km south of Montville on the way to Maleny.

tourist drive 6

I really like Balmoral Lookout because there are some beautiful trees that come to life in winter and blossom bright red.

This lookout also offers picnic tables and would make for a great lunch spot (if you don’t mind the road noise).

tourist drive 6

McCarthy’s Lookout offers stunning views over the Glass House Mountains along Mountain View Road near Maleny.

Alternatively, you could stop at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve because the views from the upper deck of the education centre are pretty neat. Winter (and morning) is best as there is much less humidity in the air and you might even see Brisbane in the distance.

tourist drive 6

4. EXPLORE SOME SUNSHINE COAST ATTRACTIONS

This is something we haven’t much done yet, I mean, we’ve only lived on the Sunshine Coast for almost 10 years so what’s the hurry… 😉 But there are a few (paid) attractions that are probably worth visiting on an outing to the Blackall Ranges.

You could visit the Maleny Botanic Gardens , which are a little on the pricey side admisson-wise and weren’t quite looking their best in spring 2022 (still recovering from our terrible weather in 2021 and 2022). But I do love wandering around gardens and photographing flowers, and they have lots of benches and shelters, which make for great picnics with gorgeous views.

And you can BYO your own picnic delicacies, which certainly works for me!

Picnic at Maleny Botanic Gardens

Just FYI, if you just want to see the gardens and not the aviary, it’s much cheaper. We certainly skipped it.

If you’ve ever wondered how a dairy farm works, Maleny Dairy offers guided tours (temporarily closed) . I really want to do this! 🙂

If cheese is more your thing, you could stop at the Maleny Cheese store and café (open Wednesdays-Sundays) for some yummy treats.

MORE IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

Another scenic drive on the Sunshine Coast is the Glass House Mountains tourist drive with some pretty cool views of the volcanic outcrops that are the Glass House Mountains. The official drive isn’t that much to shout about but I’ve written up a little loop tour you could do.

If you’re after some close-up coastal views, check out my guide to 11 Sunshine Coast Lookouts that offer beach views or why not go on a short walk .

Alternatively, go on a day hike , there are some beautiful spots on the Sunshine Coast.

While you have to pay for the Maleny Botanic Gardens, the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens are free, and include a great kids’ corner walk full of Aussie animal sculptures. Totally entertained me!

Home to small historic towns like Deadwood, Custer, Hill City, Hot Springs, Keystone and more, The Black Hills attracts millions of visitors every year. But it is perhaps most known for its monumental attraction known across the globe — Mount Rushmore.

Many head to Valentine for hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, camping and more. One of the most popular places to do several of the above is Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge , a former frontier fort and the current home to a herd of bison, elk and prairie dogs.
