Lookin' to buy a new Akubra. Maybe a Tablelands, maybe a Cattleman

Practically Family

Hi guys, well it has been many moons since a new hat has arrived at my door step and I'm getting the fever again. So here it goes. A couple of crown height and style questions. Anyone own a Tablelands? If so how is the crown height? I own a couple of Banjo Patersons so if anyone can compare the crowns on those two models that would be great. From images I have seen they look very similar. Also I'm considering a Cattleman. I own a Stockman so if anyone can compare the crowns on those two models it would be great as well. Again their images look very similar for the crowns but the Cattleman's looks like it is styled a little higher in the front. Noggintops and David Morgan and EA list slightly different info. Thanks folks!

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

I'll lock up.

I've got a Stockman and a Cattleman. The crowns on both are a tad higher in the front than the back. The Cattleman's crown is indeed a bit taller. If the front of the Stockman crown is 4-1/8 or 4-1/4, the Cattleman is 4-3/4 or 4-7/8. I love both hats. The Stockman is my cool weather hiking hat, being lined and shorter-brimmed (and less likely to blow off!) The Cattleman is for the summer, being unlined with six ventilation grommets (and also, it's the lighter Sand/Silverbelly color that doesn't absorb heat like the Glen Grey Stockman). It's also definitely a better shade hat with its extra half-inch of turned-down-all-around brim.

Call Me a Cab

Thanks for the fast replies fellas! I'm curious, Dr Strange's Cattleman was unlined and monbla256 removed his liner. monbla256 is a recent purchase from David Morgan. What "vintage" is yours Dr Strange and where did you acquire it? Was it a mail order from Down Under? Did it come with or without a liner? I am guessing the liner would be the only difference as the Cattleman in fawn and sand are stock hats for Akubra and probably in their top 3 for sales if it isn't their number 1 seller. They wouldn't tinker with their "bread and butter" too much.

I got my Cattleman via the Internet from Aussie Bush Hats and Oilskins (an Australian dealer) about four years ago. It wasn't a special order for the Sand color (whereas my Stockman in Glen Grey - same dealer, a few months earlier - had the Dread Three-Month Wait!) I asked in an email before buying if it was unlined, because even then I had the impression that some Cattleman models were lined. It was unlined. And it does NOT have the chin-strap-hook grommets a la David Morgan.

Could I ask you fellas to actually take the tape measure to your Cattlemans? I'm really liking the idea of the fuller crown height. Unfortunately I modified the crown on my Stockman so I could have a higher crown and I no longer have that point of reference. If the Cattleman is over 4 1/2 or more in front that would be great.

Duper, my Cattleman (size 57) crown measures 4" in front and 3-3/8" at the back. (My Stockman is about 1/4" shorter at both ends.) Not as tall as I thought! Sorry to mislead you...

Thanks for measuring guys. I altered my Stockman to have a higher crown, so maybe I need to think about this a bit. I really appreciate your input. I'm surprised there are so few Tablelands owners. From the images on EA I really like the brown olive shade they offer. Also I have never had a hat with the eyelets so it intrigues me a bit. I think they are a top seller in OZ as they are a "stocked" hat like the Cattleman.

Neophyte

My Mail is Forwarded Here

According to Akubra's Top Ten Seller list (published 12/16/2010), the Tablelands is their 8th most popular hat. I like the looks of it, but it's too tapered for me.

Familiar Face

I recently looked at the Akubra Cattleman sold by a retailer in the U.S.. It is lined and has a small hole just above the hatband, lower than the 3 vent holes above. All other Akubra Cattleman hats that I've looked at from Australian vendors are unlined and just the 3 vent holes in a straight row. Is the U.S. version an older style, discontinued model or strictly for U.S. sales. Anyone have any thoughts or seen a Cattleman Akubra with a lining and possibly a chin strap hole? Thanks.

The Perfect Akubra

The akubra hat is an australian icon and these tips will help you choose the right one to make your look iconic too..

WHERE WILL YOU BE WEARING YOUR AKUBRA?

There’s an Akubra for every occasion, whether you’re mustering sheep under the hot Australian sun, or stepping out for a picnic under the shade of a coolabah tree. “Akubra do fur-felt and straw,” says Tess Bartsch – manager of Adelaide Hatters. “Quite often someone who wants an Akubra but may not need it for heavy duty wear will go with the straw, while the fur felt is very durable because it is long-lasting and can take all weather conditions.” Remember, too, that the taller your hat is the more ventilation it offers – so hard work is better done in an Akubra with a higher crown.

HOW MUCH PROTECTION DO YOU NEED?

Akubras come in all shapes and many brim sizes. If you’re going to the races and will spend the day under a marquee, maybe a short-brim bowler hat is for you. But, for full sun protection the broad brim is definitely the smarter choice. Of course, if you’re likely to be in crowds, a mid-range brim could be a better choice, which is why the staff on The Ghan wear the mid-brim Cattle-man hat.

akubra traveller vs tablelands

WHAT WILL FIT MY HEAD BEST?

There are two main types of crown design in range. The round indent on the top of the crown suits a rounder head, while the elongated top indent is better suited to people whose head is longer than it is wide. “Choosing the right shape allows the hat to sit in the perfect spot on the head,” says Tess. “It should be just above the ears and in the middle of the forehead.”

WHAT WILL SUIT MY FACE SHAPE?

All these design elements of an Akubra should also be considered in relation to your face shape. “Usually you want to balance what’s happening in the face with what’s happening in the hat,” says Tess. “A little face and a big hat won’t work.”

WHAT DO I LIKE?

But, even with all of the above, the best advice is that it’s all about what you’re confident and comfortable in. While some might like the practicality of the Traveller, others might be drawn to the more showy hats, like the Crocodile Dundee-inspired The Croc, or the Western stylings of the Golden Spur.  “The hat will pick you as much you pick the hat,” says Tess. “You just put one on, and for whatever reason it is just right.”

Working out your size - getting it right the first time.

  • Do not use size charts or advice from other sites.
  • Do not simply convert US or UK size standards on our charts to a metric size. We provide the charts as guide, not as a rule.
  • Measure your head, different manufacturers have differing interpretations of size as happens across other clothing lines.
  • Measuring your head takes a few minutes and takes the guesswork out of the equation. Please use a dress makers tape measure and not a piece of string...
  • Size charts and advice are designed for Felt Hats (Akubra and Fedora) and Leather Hats (Barmah)
  • Always presume that a hat will shrink in size, they do not stretch over time.
  • Adjustment foam strips and detailed care instructions are sent with each hat. Enough strips are sent to reduce a hat by one size.
  • We happily exchange to anywhere in the world, but getting it right the first time is easier for all of us.
  • Ask us for advice, the advice we provide is based on many years experience in mail order and selling hats. We are happy to answer as many questions as you need to ask.

Fedora, Akubra and Felt Hats

The size chart below is a guide to equivalent sizes in other measures. If you are unsure of your head size, please remeasure your head in inches or cms.

  • We recommend re-measuring your head size in inches or cms and converting from the new measurement.
  • Place a tape measure above the ears, and take it around the widest part of your head. The tape should be firm but not too tight. If in between sizes, round up to the closest size, ie 56.2 should be 57, 57.7 should be a 58 etc.
  • We supply FREE foam adjustment tape or pads to adjust the hat to a perfect fit.
  • We supply enough tape to convert a hat a full size down, ie a size 58 becomes a size 57.

Barmah Canvas & Leather Hats

In the event of a hat not fitting we accept returns. If you still need assistance or want to double check the result please contact us at  [email protected] and we will be happy to advise further.

Measuring Your Head Size

To determine your hat size, follow these 3 simple steps:

  • Measure the circumference around your head - approximately 12mm (1/2") above the ears
  • Keep the dressmaker tape level and firm, across the temple and above the eyebrow ridges.
  • Check the size chart given below to determine your size.

**Scroll across to see larger sizes

AKUBRA Heads come in all sizes, and in a surprising variety of shapes. Although Akubra hats are adaptable and will usually conform to differences in shape with a little wearing, it is essential that the size be correct for your head.

For an enduring fit with your new Akubra the following points should be considered:

  • The Sheepskin inner band of the hat may shrink slightly with use. Do not expect a tight-fitting hat to 'loosen up'
  • In time, the hat will conform to your head shape. Initially, a slightly loose-fitting hat can be adjusted using folded tissue placed behind the inner band, then removed as the hat conforms to your head shape.

NOTE: For in-between measurements use the next size up.

We make all reasonable efforts to achieve and where possible exceed the following delivery expectations:

Akubra Tablelands - Brown Olive

Akubra Tablelands - Brown Olive

The Tablelands is an easy-to-wear hat that can suit so many faces - it has a very similar shape to the Cattleman, including its bound, dipped brim and eyelets, and is just as versatile. The difference is seen in the slightly more tapered crown, as opposed to the squared, teardrop crown in the Cattleman.

  • 83mm bound brim
  • Bonded leather braided band
  • Ventilation eyelets
  • Genuine leather sweatband
  • Made in Kempsey, Australia

Fabric:  100% Rabbit fur felt, unlined

Please note:  Colours may vary slightly from photographs.

Most if not all fur felt hats are shower-proof, and can confidently be worn in light to moderate rain without fear of the material or shape being damaged.

Constant wear in HEAVY rain will cause any hat to distort and potentially shrink over time. Let your hat dry naturally, away from any heat source, while resting on its crown.

Brush counter-clockwise with a soft-bristle brush to remove dust and light marks.

Most hats can also be treated with water-proofing spray for extra protection, but always remember to spray a test area first, to make sure the product won’t mark the felt.

Never leave your felt hat in extreme heat conditions, such as the dashboard of a car, or near a heater/radiator. This will mainly cause leather sweatbands to shrink or warp.

Some wool felt hats are produced to be ‘water resistant’ or ‘crush-proof’, and will indeed be so for a certain amount of time. At Brisbane Hatters we prefer to err on the side of caution and recommend that wool felts not be worn in the rain, or used as packable hats unless absolutely required.

Over time wool can shrink, fade, and lose it’s shape if treated roughly, and can be much trickier to repair than fur felt if this happens.

General care tips for wool hats are the same as for fur felts, but for cleaning it would also be good to keep a sticky lint-roller handy. Wool can generate more static than other materials, and that lint roller will be better for removing stubborn specs and animal hair.

PANAMA STRAW

Handwoven Panama hats can be just as much art as they are fashion, and some extra care should be taken when handling and wearing them.

Take you Panama hat on and off by it’s brim, and not by its pinch (the posted part of the crown). Regular handling of the pinch can cause the straw to crease and eventually split, even if the fabric is reinforced. The more that you can avoid this, the better your Panama will look and behave (and protect you!).

We recommend never wearing your Panama in the rain. The straw can absorb a small about of moisture, and this won’t damage the material itself, but prolonged dampness can make it fall out of shape. Your hat can most likely be re-blocked if this happens, but prevention is always better than a cure. Brisbane Hatters does not recommend trying to waterproof your Panama hat.

Keep Panamas and natural straw hats out of extreme heat conditions. This can dry out the straw and cause it to become brittle. If you live in a particularly hot or dry area, it’s best to spritz your Panama hat every so often with a mister (spray bottle) to stop the straw from drying out too much.

A note on rollable Panama hats: There certainly are still Panama weavers in Ecuador that make incredibly high grade, rollable hats. These exquisite pieces must be woven and shaped in a very particular way in order to make them *reliably* packable, and can sell for many thousands of dollars.   Less expensive versions of rollable Panamas do certainly exist, but should always be folded as infrequently as possible to retain the integrity of the straw. Just because you ‘can’, doesn’t always mean you ’should’ when it comes to foldable hats, especially if the price seemed too good to be true.

PAPER/HEMP/RAFFIA

Do not get paper hats wet. They are made of paper. They will lose their shape. Paper weave or paper braid hats can be excellent to wear in the sun, as their lightweight and inexpensive, which is especially handy if you’re on holiday, but they are not all-weather hats.

Hemp and raffia hats have a similar set of instructions. These will certainly be tougher than paper straw, but can soften considerable with exposure to moisture/rain. Stiffened hemp hats, such as those from Akubra, can be worn in showers and re-stiffened over time if need be, but for any softer styles, this should be avoided.

Cloth caps and hats generally need little care, and can be warn in almost any conditions. Exceptions to this rule would be caps containing cashmere, which should be kept out of heavy rain. If you do get caught out, let the cap dry slowly, then brush it down along the nap of the cashmere to smooth out the fibres.

A gentle spot-clean or hand wash will get out most stubborn stains using an appropriate fabric cleaner. We advise not to machine wash, soak, or dry clean your cloth hats, just to be safe.

Wipe over with a damp cloth if soiled, or dust can simply be brushed off with a soft bristle brush. To keep your hat soft and flexible for as long as possible, avoid leaving it in extreme heat (ie, on a car dashboard). If your leather hat or cap is going to see constant rain or snow, we recommend regularly treating it with a fabric water-proofer.

All leather, especially the Crackle finish roo leather hats, will show natural scarring and variations. These are not seen as flaws, but rather add to the life and story behind the hat.

Always store your hat either upside down on its crown, or on a suitable hook or hat stand. This will help maintain brim-shape, and reduce the amount of dust or muck that settles on in.

If your hats are going into storage for the off-season, we recommend using a sturdy box packed with acid-free tissue to support its brim and crown. Also throw in some silica packs (the little de-humidifiers that come in shoe boxes and new bags) and some moth-balls or lavender soap. This will reduce the chance of any nasty surprises the next time you wear it.

If something goes wrong with any of the above, please feel free to contact us at Brisbane Hatters and we can provide any repairs or maintenance that your new favourite (or old favourite!) hat requires.

We make all reasonable efforts to achieve and where possible exceed the following delivery expectations:

Each hat passes through 60 pairs of hands

Check our size guide  here  to help you determine your hat size.

If you are between sizes, choose the larger size as Akubra hats do not stretch and may even tighten over time (depending on the way they are treated). It is easier to add padding to a hat that is too large to make it smaller than it is to try and stretch a small hat to make it larger.

We offer a 60 day return period. You can either exchange or select store credit.

  1. Lookin' to buy a new Akubra. Maybe a Tablelands, maybe a Cattleman

The Cattleman is Akubra's #1 seller in Australia, is in their "Country" line of hats and as many of the Aussie market hats ( as sold by Aussie retailers) is UN lined. All of the Akubra's DM sells have a lining in them. As for the chinstrap eylets, the Cattleman has 3 BIG venting Eylets above 'em and once the hat is on my head, I can't see 'em ...

  2. Akubra Cattleman Vs Tablelands Hat

Akubra make a great range of hats. See these two popular models and compare for yourself via links below.Tablelands Sand: https://www.hatsbythe100.com.au/aku...

  3. Anyone got an Akubra style hat recommendation? : r/AustralianMFA

The cattleman is squarer, and the tablelands is rounder. Aesthetically i prefer the cattleman, because i think it looks more authorative and more western. The tablelands looks more modern/city. With that said, the tablelands fits my head much much better and doesn't fall, whereas the cattleman rattles a bit because of the way I'm shaped.

  4. Choosing The Right Hat For Your Face Shape

A tall crowned Western hat such as the Rough Rider, Bronco or Golden Spur can add length to a Heart shaped face. A medium brim urban Fedora such as a Traveller, Banjo Patterson, Leisure Time, Balmoral or Stylemaster is a stylish choice for everyday wear. Coober Pedy, Tablelands and Cattleman are fantastic medium brim choices.

  9. The Perfect Akubra

There are two main types of crown design in range.
