Largo Family Diner

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Located at one end of a small strip mall. Not very noticeable from the street. Not a destination place. 7:30 am with few patrons. Greeted promptly and served fresh coffee. Ordered eggs benedict and a pancake. Both were fresh and hot. More locals arriving and... the waitress knew their preferences. Based on the food and service, I will give it another try. More

The wife and I grabbed lunch here on a very slow day. There is ample off-street parking and it appears to be fairly well-maintained however, this place is easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. The server seemed preoccupied with wanting to close... early and go home as she kept interrupting us as we asked questions and ordered our food. The food was nothing special and my french fries weren't even fully cooked. (I specifically asked for well done fries and I couldn't even get her attention to come over to our table to discuss the problem.) I never could get a refill on my iced tea and she didn't come back to our table or even acknowledge us until we were way past done eating. When she saw I left nearly my entire order of french fries on the plate, she just said, "Everything good?" When I informed her the french fries weren't fully cooked, she just looked at me and walked away without saying a word. We then waiting another very long time to get a check, which we never did. So, we got up and started to walk out and she then finally met us at the register to get our payment, which she wasn't ready for as she didn't have the check with her. Again she asked how everything was and I just walked out the door while my wife paid the check. The service at this place is non-existent and since the food is average at best, I just can't recommend. The Golden Bear is just up the street and it has much better service and food. More

The Largo Family Restaurant is a great place to take your whole family and out of town guests to. The menu has many items to select from.

I recently moved to the area. Was looking for a friendly, local place with good food to eat breakfast everyday. This restaurant was hard to see from the street but I saw a group of women eating outside at a table. So I thought I'd... try it last Thursday. I went in and sat at a both. Food & service was fair. Place is clean and prices were Ok. But what really upset me was the OWNER was really nasty to a woman sitting in a both across from me. It appeared there was a problem with her coffee. The owner argued with her and was belligerent. As I said I was looking for a comfortable place to start my day. It upset me and then before I left the owner was talking to another woman in a very demeaning way and was disrespectful to her as she was trying to pay her bill. I saw the woman walk to the bathroom in tears. The OWNERS are very unfriendly to the guests. The next morning I went to the Golden Bear Restaurant and found the kind of restaurant I was looking for. More

And it happened again. Just wrote a review about the rude waitress Last week, when in there Tuesday and there she was. Very loud, rude, Slams dishes. I didn’t even get what I ordered and didn’t even tell her about it because nothing would have... been done like it was not a week ago. You just lost three customers More

Terrible food!!! Tried this place twice thinking the first time was just an off day. Nope it's bad. Server was great, but if you notice a full plate of food left then you should ask if everything is ok.

Sorry no pix of grits we forgot we were so hungry!!! Everything hot and delicious hidden gem. First time here we will be back!!! Oh and very clean!!

Tried this place for breakfast.never again.food was room temp.potatoes were greasy and had a strange taste.we ordered toast that came to table after we ate our food.it seemed they cook everything on one griddle all together.didnt like getting burnt pieces of other food mixed in... with mine. More

Went once will not be back. Meat is spoiled just disgusting. Told owner she said they smelt it and it was good. Changed me anyway.

My networking group meets there weekly.Outstanding customer service, excellent food, awesome prices, place is always clean , staff and owners are extremly friendly and will go above and beyoond to bring a high level of customer's satisfaction. 5 stars, hands down!

Good food and excellent service. Prices are reasonable. Their muffins are very good. Your food is always cooked to order. Your eggs are done just the way you want. Your toast is done to your specifications. Coffee is always ready, fresh and hot. A hidden... gem in a small strip mall. More

Outstanding Breakfast burrito's. All our breakfasts were awesome. Great service, great food, affordable. Works for us.

This establishment used to be the restaurant called AMBROSIA and I had eaten there more than a few times. It is now the LARGO FAMILY DINER, very similar in name to the Largo Family Restaurant. But not the same.... It changed hands about the beginning... of the year. Its table service is familiar everyday American menu, with a lot of sides and several Greek Specialties and was good. Almost habit forming... And the place is inexpensive... the alternate close locations are higher prices. and that brings locals. Obviously, very friendly locals, lots of good mornings, nice experience, lot busier than before. Smoking outside, not inside. FL LAW I rarely comment on a place just on one trip or incident and this place changed hands about the first of the year Dec-Jan and went through the usual shakedown restaurant cruise with a different menu and personnel. It's cranking now. So last week I ate there twice ( both breakfasts with my client) after noting the change and the food and service was good and met the mark for quality, service and the place surprisingly was very busy. Four different breakfasts all great. I love Biscuits and Gravy and any kind of omelets. Loaded with locals. So something was different. Our locals are a "tough audience" in the food industry. Trust me on that one... And most of the tourists were gone. Also tough customers... The two gals had the tables under control, the food was hot and for a smaller homey type place did very well, had they not, I would be saying something. We had a long very extended arduous tourist season due to the weather up North and in the Carolinas, tourists and snowbirds ( Canadian winter visitors), we had to change plans at certain restaurants which were too busy and long lines to even get into unless we went off hours. It's calmed down now and this is a convenient stop and you won't go broke... It has a large menu, especially breakfast with super omelettes, Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Burritos, Full Skillets and Biscuits and Gravy. Burgers and Melts, Angus Beef, Wraps and Lots of Greek Dishes and specialties. Thats a big order for a small place and they have specials all the time and yesterday they had three homemade soups. Trip’s Diner in Seminole has closed and is now the Apple Butter Cafe

  • Maggie Duffy Times staff

SEMINOLE — On a bright Wednesday morning, customers streamed in and out of the Apple Butter Cafe for its grand opening. Many had been there before as regulars of the space’s former restaurant: Trip’s Diner.

Former Trip’s employee Shannon Lee purchased the place Jan. 23 and has changed the restaurant’s name. The new spot’s vibe is similar to Trip’s, with breakfast and lunch served daily. Menu items include specials like a chili cheese omelette, a French dip and a fork-and-knife chili cheese dog.

Lee, who is 43, worked at the Seminole Trip’s since the day it opened and has been a server for 27 years.

It’s been her lifelong dream to own a restaurant, she said, something the former owner, Gordon Stevenson, knew. When he approached her about buying the restaurant, he told her he wanted to make her dream a reality.

“He made it very possible for me to do (it), and here I am,” Lee said.

I DID A THING TODAY... I'm officially a Restaurant owner. I just closed on the deal. I've wanted my own Restaurant... Posted by Shannon Lee on  Monday, January 23, 2023

Lee has lived in Seminole her whole life, and many of the new spot’s customers so far are her longtime regulars. She retained all of the former Trip’s staff, which Lee said made the transition easy.

She wanted to keep the neighborhood restaurant feel with Apple Butter Cafe: people at the counter drinking coffee, watching the news and striking up conversation with each other.

“I want it to be that place where friends meet new and old friends,” she said.

This sale won’t affect the other two Trip’s locations in Tampa (6416 N Florida Ave.) and St. Petersburg (2339 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N), which are open for business as usual.

Those locations were acquired in January by Phillip Ingram, who said Trip’s isn’t going anywhere. He said one of the missions of his company, Sunshine City Foods, is to preserve the local iconic restaurant brands for decades to come. The company also bought Lonni’s Sandwiches in downtown St. Petersburg two years ago.

Apple Butter Cafe is open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. 10555 Park Blvd., Seminole. 727-258-7033.

5 incredible day trips from Miami

Priscilla Blossom

Apr 26, 2024 • 6 min read

trips diner largo

Take a stroll along Juno Beach Pier before exploring the Loggerhead Marine Life Center © Holly Hildreth / Getty Images

Miami may boast some of the best things to see and do in Florida , but it's also a great base for exploring some of the Sunshine State's other highlights.

Maybe a charming town and some unique experiences will take your fancy. Or you feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami's busy streets (especially around spring break) to some wide open spaces.

While you may spot the occasional gator wandering out of a canal or have a muscovy duck come pester you at the local park, there much more impressive wildlife encounters beyond the city limits of Miami . No matter what you want out of a day trip from Magic City, we've got you covered.

1. Meet sea turtles in Juno Beach and Jupiter

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

For one of the best family day trips near Miami, venture north to Juno Beach and visit Loggerhead Marine Life Center , dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of local sea turtles. It's a great space for seeing these magnificent creatures up close.

For more adorable animal encounters, Jupiter's Loxahatchee River Center features interactive exhibits, touch tanks, and live aquatic tanks where visitors can view and learn about local marine ecosystems. You can also head to Blowing Rocks Preserve , where you can see the largest Anastasia limestone shoreline on the Atlantic, blasting saltwater upward of 50 feet into the air.

For family-friendly eats, stop in at Juno Beach Cafe or Jetty's Waterfront Restaurant (the latter of which has a fantastic view of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ), and Jupiter Donut Factory for a tasty treat.

How to get to Juno Beach and Jupiter from Miami:  It's possible to take the TriRail from Miami up to West Palm Beach and make the rest of the journey in a Lyft or cab. But the most convenient option is driving (yours or a rental).

Female snorkeler explores a coral reef in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

2. Explore coral reefs in three ways in Key Largo

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes (driving), 3 hours (public transport)

Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , a mostly underwater park home to brightly colored coral reefs that can be enjoyed in several ways. Get a glimpse via the underwater cam that live-streams into the nature center (and online) or book tickets for their renowned glass-bottom boat tours. Be aware these sell out quickly, but there are other glass-bottom boat tour providers near the park.

Those who prefer a closer look at the reefs are welcome to snorkel or even scuba dive in the park. You can easily spend a full day in Largo, and if you do, grab a seafood meal at a waterfront spot like Sundowners and Snooks, or something tucked away from the crowds like the quirky Mrs. Mac's.

How to get to Key Largo from Miami:  If you're anywhere near the Metrorail, it's possible to take it as far south as Dadeland, board the Route 38 bus further south and then transfer to the 301 (which can take you to Key Largo). If you're short on patience, shuttle buses like Greyhound and Flixbus can take you south slightly faster. Driving yourself is the quickest option for those short on time.

The canal next to Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

3. Have an all-day date in Fort Lauderdale

Travel time: 45 minutes

Less than an hour's journey north from Miami lies Fort Lauderdale – the perfect option for a quick romantic getaway.

Start with a stroll through the lush grounds of the Bonnet House , a quiet sanctuary complete with a butterfly garden. From there, whisper sweet nothings to your beau aboard the Las Olas Gondola  before sneaking in a romantic meal at Burlock Coast or The Katherine .

And finally, choose your own adventure: heart-pumping fun at Xtreme Action Park (complete with go-karts, laser tag and escape rooms), live entertainment at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (musicals, plays, ballets and then some), or a bit of gambling, comedy and music at Seminole Hard Rock Casino .

How to get to Fort Lauderdale from Miami:  As is the case for most destinations in Florida, having your own vehicle gives you the best flexibility. However, you can visit Fort Lauderdale by booking a ticket on the Tri-Rail or Brightline train and then using a car-share service to get around town.

Side view of an alligator swimming in river against cloudy sky in the Everglades National Park, near Miami

4. Get away from it all, Everglades style

Travel time: 60 to 90 minutes

This massive national park extends far beyond Miami-Dade County limits, and if you want to get the full experience, you'll need at least a day. Start your day at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to learn about the park and then walk along some of their nearby paved trails (make sure to try a milkshake from Robert Is Here or some bites at Everglades Gator Grill along the way).

Shark Valley Visitor Center is another beginner-friendly spot – you can rest your legs on a tram tour, hire some bikes and explore the area on two wheels, or even opt for an airboat ride (try Miccosukee Airboats ).

You'll get plenty of opportunities to see alligators, anhingas, turtles and more at either center, but if you want a more immersive experience, drive south to Flamingo, where hiking trails, kayaking, boating, camping and even on-site dining and accommodations ( Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant , should you feel so inclined) can all be found.

How to get to Everglades National Park from Miami:  Unfortunately, there are no public transit options to get from Miami to any of the Everglades visitor centers. Depending on traffic, it's just over an hour's drive west of Miami.

5. Explore a Bahamian island via golf cart in Bimini

Travel time: 2 hours and 40 minutes

Whether you've lived in South Florida a while or are just visiting, you may have wondered, "Can I day trip to the Bahamas from Miami?" The answer is yes! The journey is a bit longer than the rest of these day trips, involving a quick journey north to Fort Lauderdale and hopping on a ferry to Bimini.

Once there, you can rent a golf cart to explore all you can during your full day on the island. Snorkel around the wreckage of the Sapona (a concrete ship built during WWI), dine on conch at Joe's Conch Shack or grab a slice at Edith's Pizza, snap photos of the art at the Dolphin House Museum, and bask in the sun at Radio Beach.

You can also rent a day pass at Resorts World Bimini to enjoy their casino and other on-site amenities (but be warned, this might make you want to extend your trip for another day or two).

How to get to Bimini from Miami:  If you own a boat (or know someone who does), it's possible to sail to Bimini. If not, take the Brightline train to reach Fort Lauderdale in 40 minutes and then board the  Balearia ferry service for quick and easy passage to the island (don't forget to pack your passport).

The 6 best key largo snorkeling tours.

Explore Florida's underwater wonders during one of these trips.

The Best Key Largo Snorkeling Tours

Key Largo, the northernmost and longest of the Florida Keys, is a top destination for divers and snorkelers alike. Bordered by Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the self-titled Dive Capital of the World offers plenty of attractions and things to do , including John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . This subaquatic treasure (known as the first undersea park in the U.S.) features 70 nautical square miles of sparkling turquoise waters and the shallow-water living coral reefs of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary – the only living coral barrier reef in North America and the third-largest living coral reef in the world. These protected and vibrant reefs are home to an abundance of marine life: more than 6,000 species.

One of the most notable attractions when diving or snorkeling in Key Largo is the nearly 9-foot tall, 4,500-pound bronze sculpture known as Christ of the Abyss. It sits deep in the waters of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The statue is the third in a series. The other two lie in the waters of the Italian Riviera and on land at a port in Grenada to honor those who lost their lives at sea. Florida's statue has been submerged since 1965.

After consulting both expert opinion and traveler sentiment, U.S. News identified the following snorkeling tours as the best available. In addition to vibrant reefs, shipwrecks and statues, snorkelers could see angelfish, parrotfish, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and dolphins, among other marine life.

Note: Wearing sunscreen is encouraged, but you must wear reef-safe sunscreen that is not made with harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Sundiver Snorkeling Tours – Shallow Reef Snorkel Tour

Price: Adults from $65; kids from $55 Duration: 2.5 hours

The 9 a.m. trip features a visit to the Christ of the Abyss statue, while the noon and 3 p.m. tours provide views of an abundance of marine life, including tropical fish and possibly sea turtles, lobsters, starfish and rays. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable, friendly crew and the well-equipped boat. Travelers also describe the reef as beautiful and report seeing lots of fish.

Prices include a mask, fins and a snorkeling vest. An adult must accompany snorkelers younger than 18. A sunset and snorkel reef adventure is also available seasonally and sets sail at 5:30 p.m. The company also offers private snorkel charters.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – Snorkeling Tours

Price: From $50 Duration: 2.5 hours

If you have your own snorkel equipment or want to explore John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park without instruction from a guide, consider signing up for one of the official tours operated by the park. After a short boat ride, you'll be given a brief snorkel lesson at the reef before having time to explore the water on your own. Patrons describe the experience as incredible and praise the friendly crew members.

Excursions depart several times a day in the morning and afternoon. Note that crew members do not act as guides and the boat stays moored for the duration of your time at the reef. Equipment rentals and personal in-water guides are available for additional fees. Scuba diving and glass-bottom boat tours are also available.

Snorkel Key Largo

Price: Adults from $60; kids from $55 Duration: 2.5 hours

Snorkel Key Largo's three daily trips take snorkelers to several patch reefs in the shallow waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Islamorada. Tour-takers praise the captain and crew for their expertise and approachability. They also say it's an excellent experience for families, highlighting the abundance of marine life and the relaxing ambiance.

Tours operate daily and include snorkel instruction, gear and a safety vest. The company offers departures at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The company also offers a sunset catamaran sailing cruise.

Islander Girl Snorkel & Tours

Price: Adults from $59; kids from $48 Duration: 2 hours

The snorkel sites on this tour can change daily, based on the captain's evaluation of which reefs promise the best visibility and conditions. Sites may include the Hens and Chickens reef, Cheeca Rocks and Pleasure Reef, among others. Reviewers applaud the crew for their friendly, attentive attitudes. They also note the crew is especially skilled at working with kids.

Tours are generally offered daily at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets cover the use of snorkel equipment, water, towels, rum punch, snacks, soft drinks and a guide. The company also offers sunset cruises and sandbar swims at the Islamorada Sandbar.

Pirates Cove Watersports

Price: From $65 Duration: 4 hours

If you're looking for a half-day snorkel adventure, consider this tour operated by Pirate Cove Watersports. You'll make stops at two locations with ample time to explore underwater. Travelers praise the fun, energetic crew and appreciate the short boat ride to the snorkeling site. Reviewers also describe this tour as great for first-time snorkelers.

Trips are generally offered daily at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you're not interested in a snorkeling or scuba tour, consider the company's boat tours or sunset cruises.

Silent World Dive Center – M/V Calypso - Two Reef Snorkel Tour

Price: From $75 Duration: 3 hours

In 2022, Silent World Diver Center debuted its new 51-foot Corinthian catamaran exclusively for snorkeling trips to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. During tours aboard the Calypso, you'll visit two reef sites, including the famous Christ of the Abyss (conditions permitting). Reviewers appreciate the small group size of the tour and report seeing lots of fish and coral. They also applaud the fun, professional crew.

Tickets include the use of snorkeling equipment. Tours depart daily at 8:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. The company also offers scuba diving trips.
