There is a $50 destination fee on all non-e-bikes and a $85 destination fee on all e-bikes. I am in the market for another bike and I am having difficulty choosing between the Giant Roam and Trek DS bikes. I compared the key features of each brand and outlined my findings below. 

In total, the cheapest bike is the Giant Roam 4 Disc, which only costs $650.00. Additionally, this Giant Roam 4 Disc model is more affordable than any Trek Dual Sport model. Giant Roam 4 is the perfect combination of a low price and high quality.

On average, if you are into racing, going for a Trek DS bike would be the best choice for you. This is because the frames of Trek DS bikes are built stiffer, making them ideal for racing or for someone who is of a heavier weight.

To help you make the decision, we researched and created the table below outlining the differences and similarities between Giant Roam and Trek DS bikes.

Giant Roam vs. Trek Ds

Cost of purchase: giant roam vs. trek ds.

In total, the purchase cost of Giant Roam bikes is $650-$2,750, while the Trek DS Dual Sport models cost $689.99-$1,269.99. Between the Giant Roam and Trek DS models, the cheapest model is the Giant Roam 4 Disc, and the most expensive models are the Giant Roam E+ GTS and STA, which are electric bikes.

Giant Roam and Trek DS bikes each have several different bike models, and each model is sold at a different price.

Frame Material: Giant Roam vs. Trek DS

As a whole, the frames of Giant Roam bikes are made of Aluxx-Grade Aluminum. In contrast, the frames of Trek Dual Sport bike models are made of Alpha Gold Aluminum. The frame of Trek Ds models is stiffer than the Giant Roam, making it the better option for racing.

Range: Giant Roam vs. Trek DS 

As a whole, all the traditional bike models of Giant Roam and Trek DS can go as far as you can pedal. Electric bike models of Giant Roam (Roam E+ STA and GTS) can travel an average of 65 miles per charge with pedal assist.

Any bike can go as far as you can pedal. However, since standard bikes do not have pedal assist, it would be difficult for you to travel long distances in a single trip because you need to expend effort on pedaling your bike. Pedaling can be exhausting, especially if you are not used to exercising on a regular basis.

Welcome to my Trek Dual Sport 2 Review.

I’ve used a lot of bikes over the years and Trek Dual Sport 2 is my favorite commuter/hybrid bike on the market.

Feel free to try other bikes if you are searching for an all-purpose bike, but if I were you, I’d go with one that’s proven to be high quality, easy to drive, and heavy-duty bike.

This affordable entry-level model features some great adaptations that make it an effective and desirable option for a commuter bike. The frame of the Trek Dual Sport 2 bike is lightweight and well-balanced, especially when paired with all-terrain tires like the ones that are installed when you buy the bike. 

This model is relatively accessory light, with most of the manufacturing budget having gone to get better components on a good frame. 

While this might be a good commuter bike for the road, we were also pleased to see some mountain bike adaptations, like a suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes, adding to the effectiveness of this design. 

Things to Consider Before Buying a Commuter or Hybrid Bike 

Commuter bikes are often the more all-purpose style of bike. They aren’t really meant for racing, which means that they’re generally a little heavier. They also use wider tires with a grippier tread that gives you more stability but potentially slow the bike down a little. 

These bikes also often have mounting holes drilled, but don’t always come with the accessories you may want to make them a more commuter-friendly model. 

That said, it’s often cheaper to buy the accessories you want and add them than it is to buy a hybrid bike that comes with accessories pre-assembled. 

Overall, commuter bikes are good as an option for people who want to commute, and for leisure riders who aren’t looking to take on big races or challenging trails. 

Features & Benefits

The frame is made from high-quality Alpha Gold Aluminum. It’s designed to give you a streamlined and well-balanced system. The frame doesn’t come with the added accessories, but it is rack and fender ready, so you can add them whenever you like. 

For more accessories, you may need to take this frame to a shop to get the necessary modifications. Fortunately, for most commuter bikes, you shouldn’t need much more than just a rack. 

However, where a lot of commuter bikes allow for a slightly heavier frame design than good mountain bikes and racing bikes, this model is a little lighter than average. It’s less than a pound of difference,

Suspension System

Unlike a lot of commuter bikes, this model does come with a pretty good front suspension. The suspension is all in the fork, and the Trek Dual Sport 2 features an SR Suntour NEX, coil spring, preload hydraulic assisted suspension. 

There’s only about 63mm of travel in that fork, but that’s still a lot more than you can expect from most road bikes. It’s more than enough to absorb the occasional bump in the road or a small pothole or two. 

It also features a hydraulic lockout system that makes it easy to avoid wear and tear on your suspension by locking it in place. That can also be a good option anytime you’re riding somewhere you really want to feel the terrain through your bike. 

Fortunately, locking and unlocking the suspension is relatively simple, so you don’t need to worry about going through a complicated process every time. You should be able to reach the lockout mechanism easily, seated on the bike, or standing next to it.

The wheels on are designed to fit 700x40c tires, a common and adaptable size for commuter and road bikes. 

The rims have a double-walled system for added durability. They’re made from aluminum alloy, which, while not quite as lightweight as carbon fiber wheel rims, does tend to cut down on the noise from those wheels. 

That’s less of an issue since Trek Dual Sport 2 is designed with disc brakes, but it’s still worth considering in case you upgrade to a combination system down the line. 

The drivetrain on this hybrid bike is all Shimano parts, from the Altus line. They’re affordable, but also highly effective, with minimal pressure needed to switch gears. 

The Trek Dual Sport 2 also comes with a particularly wide range of gears, perfect for navigating urban hills and dealing with heavy stop and go traffic. 

You’ll get one 8 gear system, and the other shifter is a 3 gear. That gives you a total of 24 distinct settings to move through. As you get more accustomed to the system, you’ll discover that the wide range of gears on this bike makes it much simpler to make the most out of your pedaling power.

Next to the frame, the brake system is probably the second most important part of your bike. It’s one of the most important safety features on your bike. 

Fortunately, since Trek Dual Sport 2 comes with a hydraulic disc brake from Tektro, you’re in good hands when it comes to stopping power. 

Disc brakes don’t put pressure on the rim like more standard V-brakes. Instead, they apply pressure directly to the wheel rotor, in a more efficient use of friction that stops your bike faster than rim braking. 

Disc brakes are also usually better protected than rim brakes, which means that they’ll need slightly less maintenance in the long run. You’ll still need to plan on regular maintenance when you can, but otherwise, these brakes should need little adjustment or care. 

Is the Trek Roscoe 8 a Better Option Than the Trek Dual Sport 2?

When comparing the Trek Roscoe 8 and the Trek Dual Sport 2, a trek roscoe 8 mountain bike review reveals that it offers more advanced features and capabilities. Customer Reviews

Users of Trek Dual Sport 2 bike consistently comment that the weight is low enough that you can’t really notice it while you’re riding. They’re reasonably speedy, very responsive, and the Trek DS 2 works well on a variety of terrain from pavement to loose gravel. 

Overall, riders tend to love this hybrid bike and appreciate its lower price point. However, several riders do note that this bike is good but louder than some of it’s more expensive competitors. 

If you’re looking for a perfectly quiet ride, this bike might not be for you. But, in all other performance categories, the Trek DS 2 performs as well or better than its competition in the same price range. 

Alternatives

Last, we want to take a look at how this bike holds up against some of the similar Trek models. After all, each bike is designed with a specific purpose in mind, and knowing what the strengths of similar models are can help you narrow down which option is the right one for you. 

Trek Dual Sport 2 vs 3

The Trek Dual Sport 2 and the Dual Sport 3 are, at first glance, very similar models. Both are hybrid bikes that are beefy enough they would have been considered mountain bikes only a few years ago. Both use a lightweight aluminum frame, and both have front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. 

However, for the additional $200 to upgrade to the Dual Sport 3, you also get tubeless-ready rims, an upgrade Shimano Acera drivetrain, and a matching Shimano hydraulic brake set. 

Those changes lead to a better-optimized bike, but aren’t necessarily worth the additional cost, depending on how you want to ride the bike.

If you’re looking for a true commuter bike, the Dual Sport 2 is plenty for what you’ll need, and can even handle some light trail riding. 

If you’re looking for a commuter bike, you can also take to the mountains regularly, it might be worth getting the component improvements included in the Dual Sport 3. 

Trek Dual Sport 2 vs FX 2

The FX is a lighter, slimmer design than the Trek Dual Sport 2, but since both bikes are in the same price range, it’s difficult not to compare them. The FX 2 is a more recent model than the Dual Sport 2, but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily using nicer components. 

The Trek Dual Sport 2 also uses a Tektro hydraulic disc brake system, and also uses Altus line Shimano gears in the drivetrain. 

However, at approximately 26 lbs, the FX 2 is three pounds lighter than the Trek Dual Sport 2 . It also uses slimmer tires with less of a significant tread. 

Where the Dual Sport 2 is almost a mountain or rugged trail bike, the FX 2 is much closer to a road bike. Both are great bikes for their price range and for entry-level users, but where the Dual Sport 2 is more rugged and stable, the FX 2 is going to be significantly speedier and is more designed for the road.

Trek Dual Sport 2 vs Giant Roam 2

The Trek Dual Sport 2 and the Giant Roam 2 are about as similar as two different bike models possibly could be. They have a similar frame, similar weight, and the same weight capacity. 

Both models use a hydraulic disc brake system. The Dual Sport 2 uses a Tektro model, while the Roam 2 uses a Shimano, but they are in roughly the same price point and have similar performance ratings. 

Both of these bikes also have a mild front suspension system in the fork. In fact, both bikes use the same fork. 

With bikes this similar (both even use a Shimano drivetrain), the next question needs to be if there is a significant difference in price. Here too, these two models are very similar. They are usually within $50 of each other, and so a good sale on either model might make it more affordable. 

However, which prices this similar, it’s less about which is cheaper at the time, and more about which brake system and configuration you prefer. If you’re truly not sure which bike is a better fit for you, see if there are any local bike stores around that will let you give both models a quick test. 

The Trek Dual Sport 2 might once have been considered suitable for mountains, and with its front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and durable design, it can still be used as one on at least some mountain trails. 

Now considered more of a hybrid, this bike is a good option for commuters who are looking for a slightly sportier model, or who want the added flexibility of an all-terrain bike.

Giant also boasts an impressive selection of anything bike; however, they lack behind Trek in their product range. An interesting fact about Giant is that in some cases, they can manufacture bikes designed by competitor brands, as their team has excellent bike manufacturing facilities across the world.

Trek road bike designs are flashy and cutting edge, geared towards research and development, focused on making their bikes look and feel better when on the saddle. More people tend to go for a Trek Road bike when money isn’t a problem. 

Giant road bike designs are less flashy and more geared to adding quality parts to the design than turning heads on the road. Giant tend to merge the practicality of their bikes’ with added performance by going with their general design, whereas Trek’s models seem to be more streamlined every year.

Trek has proved its worth regarding the production of award-winning reliable racing bikes, where Giant is all about the comfort of the ride and producing affordable quality bikes for everyone.

Trek bikes are generally more expensive than Giant. The main reason for this is that Trek bikes are manufactured in the United States, where the components cost more than in Taiwan, where the components cost less.

Giant bikes are less expensive than Trek bikes, mainly because they are manufactured in Taiwan. The island contains a closely interweaved supply chain incorporated with mature manufacturing technology.

Giant Bike Frames are made from an Advanced Grade Composite (Raw carbon), which features an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio, that is both light and highly durable.

• Full Floater – This allows for an extraordinarily responsive and nimble suspension that gives you the feeling of bottomless travel.
• IsoSpeed – This road bike suspension system decouples the seat tube from the top tube, decreasing driver fatigue.
• RE:aktiv – This suspension system adapts to the terrain with affective dampening and low shaft velocity. 

Giant’s suspension systems are also top-notch and are of high-technological quality:

• Maestro Full Suspension – This suspension system is used on their mountain bikes; it utilizes four tactically placed pivot points connected to two linkages, creating a single floating point that minimizes suspension compression. 
• Flexpoint Suspension – A suspension system that offers the same benefits as a multi-link system without the added cost/need for regular maintenance.

In some of their higher-priced models, both Trek and Giant use SRAM RED eTap AXS Groupset, expect Shimano kits on the mid-range models. Trek uses higher gear ratios in their bikes, whereas Giant prefers to go with lower gear ratios in similar models.

Trek revolutionized the biking industry by releasing their patented  Active Braking Pivot or ABP system. Manufacturers struggled for years with breaks and the suspension system, as braking would lock up the suspension.

That was until Trek unleashed the ABP, which allowed the suspension system to function at its best while braking, resulting in:

• Driver Confidence (On or off the brakes)

Trek and Giant Road bikes use hydraulic disc brakes on their road bikes , although you might find rim brakes on some older or specific models. Hydraulic disc brakes are a way more effective braking system and hardly get damaged when put to the test.

Both have a wide range of brakes that they use on different types of bikes, but it’s usually hydraulic for road bikes, which is considered the most efficient braking system available. 

If you are into competitive racing, you probably have a hero that you follow religiously. When looking at some pro-cycling wins for each of the respective brands, it looks like Trek nails it with regards to producing high-performance bikes in the pro-cycling circuit!

When comparing two brands, it’s best to compare their top-of-the-range models with each other. Have you heard the saying that goes that you are only as good as your last bike?

When you compare Trek’s Émonda SLR 9 eTap vs. Giant’s Propel Advanced Pro Disc 1, the slight differences are usually found in the different technologies used by the specific manufacturer, a different part here or there, both bikes are of high-quality and worth the price.

Trek’s Émonda SLR 9 eTap won the Best Road Bike of The Year award, which comes as no surprise to Trek lovers.

Trek bikes are ideal for the serious, heavy-duty racer and heavier than the average rider. Trek is known for its superior rear suspension, making mincemeat any terrain without feeling bumps or ruts. 

When used in urban areas, giant road bikes are typically more geared for the average rider. Giant likes to give the user a very comfortable ride compared to a Trek bike where performance is everything, and people sometimes refer to Giant bikes as “souped-up” tourist bikes.

That being said, Giant is no slouch when it comes to producing high-end road bikes. They have been doing it for many years, maybe just not as regularly as Trek does.

Some manufacturers design e-bikes that use a twist throttle to engage the electronic drive system, where you are not required to pedal for the motor to engage, but not Trek or Giant. They only produce pedal-assist e-bikes that deliver power according to driver input.

You will notice that Trek has a wider variety of e-bikes models under each respective category, compared to Giant, servicing a larger consumer base:

There is little that separates both brands regarding their respective e-bike line of models . Your decision may rest on the price and functionality of the bike also what technology is used in the design.

Giant recently released a model – Reign E+ 0 (2022) that features a 750Wh battery – whereas, until last year, the most powerful battery used was 650Wh by both Trek and Giant.

They both produce bikes in the following categories:

The guys at Bicycling.com and Outsideline.com   concluded that Trek’s E-Caliber 9.9 XTR won the e-mountain bike of the year award in 2021. Another feather in Trek’s hat, a full hat, I might add.

Gravel bikes are designed to perform on gravel paths and tarmac, a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure bike. 

Trek again has a broader range of models for gravel bikes, and their new model Checkpoint SLR 9 eTap has taken the gravel bike scene by storm. 

Giant’s Revolt Advanced Pro (2022) is a cheaper option, with less technology involved, but still a fantastic ride. 

When you can’t afford the top-of-the-range models, you will always find a model from either company that gives you value for money . Finding the right bike for you is all about personal riding preference, your budget, and what you expect to get out of the bike.

Giant VS Trek Mountain Bikes

Both are major mountain bike brands and leaders in the industry, for the right price you get an awesome bike. Some Trek MTB frames are in fact from Giant! Both make great bikes and crappy bikes depending on the price range, anything over $800 is often far superior to a $600-$700 bike.

If you’re a very fast rider or rather heavy don’t get a Giant. Giant’s MTB  suspension have long and flexible lower link which is less comfortable at high speeds and heavy riders might consider it a bit too flexible. Your weight might compress the suspension too much wasting energy and performance.

Only just a couple of years ago Trek had better geometry and suspension design but nowadays there’s hardly any noticeable difference. The most important part is the frame, both offer great frames but with a few small differences . Most of the components come from Shimano or SRAM.

Giant offers the best bang for your buck, they recently even cut prices where Trek did the opposite. From a value proposition, Trek is less attractive , with the recent difference in prices, this is where Giant stands out. Unless you’re able to get a discount on a Trek,  budget-wise Giant is the better choice.

Giant is the largest manufacturer in the world and makes bikes for every brand, their frames are top quality and even Trek sometimes has Giant frames (check the photos from the Giant bike factory in Taiwan). 

Other people report that they find Giant’s frames not stiff enough, but it depends on what you like best and it’s less relevant when it comes to mountain biking. If you’re not the racing type or break bikes occasionally, get a Giant.

Others find Giant’s frame angles less progressive compared to Trek .  When it comes to hydraforming (a process using fluid and high pressure to shape the tube), Trek is doing trickier stuff to gain strength and stiffness.

Most of the time Trek does a better job optimizing frames when it comes to the strength-to-weight . In doubt and if you feel they are equal, check which of them offers the best warranty.

Both perform excellent depending on the bike and your personal preference or body type. Heavyweights and racers will often be better off with a Trek because of the differences in suspension.

Trek is often considered like a plow bike and Giant is more playful , this also depends on how you set up your bike. The more you pay the better the performance and this goes for every reputable brand.

A $500 mountain bike performs a lot worse compared to a higher-end $1500 bike. You get what you pay for and sometimes saving a little bit more is really worth it if you’re looking at a lower range bike. I’d stay away from the cheaper models if you can unless you only plan to use it on roads and pavements.

Here’s a big difference, you often get better quality components when you buy a Giant MTB considering you’re comparing bikes at the same price range. Like mentioned before, Giant can get their parts cheaper because they own many of the factories and buy in bulk.

The components often don’t have anything to do with the brands, they buy them from other manufacturers but the price makes a difference.

Both make great designs and this is really a personal preference. It’s all in the eye of the beholder but often people like Trek designs better . This also might have to do with the brand’s status. Giant is less shiny/flashy, like the Toyota of mountain bikes. They’re reliable, more affordable but not the sexiest.

Giant’s focus is on the quality of the parts and Trek is more into research and development trying to innovate and make better bikes. Suspension layout, for example, is a bit different on Trek bikes.

Trek vs. Giant: Warranty And Customer Service

A warranty is a manufacturer’s guarantee that the product you buy from them is of good quality and doesn’t contain manufacturing defects from their side. 

It gives the consumer (you) the legal right to ask for help from the manufacturer, should any problems arise with their product, according to their terms and conditions.

Both Trek and Giant offer lifetime warranties on their frames and forks, with Trek offering a two-year warranty on:

• Parts 
• Accessories
• Rear Suspension Linkage Components – Rocker link, bearings, accompanying hardware, and components
• Bontrager wheels (with alloy rims)

Trek allows ownership to change from the original owner to a buyer, offering the new owner a warranty on frames and forks. Trek’s Carbon Care Warranty allows customers to get a discount on frame repairs for non-warranty damages.  

Giant’s warranty is for one year on the following and only applies to the original owner of the bike:

• All original components and the paint finish, all Giant repair parts, accessories, and replacement parts are warranted to be free from defects in workmanship and material for one year from the original date of purchase.
• Normal wear and tear
• Improper maintenance
• Improper assembly
• Installation of any components, accessories, and parts not originally intended for or compatible with the bicycle when sold
• Damage or failure due to misuse, accident, abuse, or neglect
• Labor charges for the replacement of parts or changeover
• Non-proprietary products – any other original component or part – covered by the original manufacturer’s warranty

Any modification of the bike’s frame, fork, or any of the components will void the warranty in its entirety. The warranty will be valid from the purchase date and is expressly limited to the replacement or repair of defective items at the manufacturer’s discretion. 

All bikes must be registered when bought by the manufacturers to place the bike under warranty. Spending lots of cash on a bike and not registering it for a warranty is negligent. Please remember to register your new bike immediately.

Having the most retail outlets and service centers, Trek might edge Giant in this department regarding faster service delivery.

If you are stuck with a set budget, then Giant may be the bike for you. If your finances allow for it, and you like flashy things, then Trek is the easier choice. High-performance road bikes are Trek’s domain at the moment. A Giant will do just fine for the average rider looking for a comfortable, more playful ride. 

When it comes to Trek vs. Giant, one will always bring out a better model than the other, placing the ball in the other’s court. The thing is that the rival always responds with innovation and upgrades, which is why the bicycling industry is in such a healthy state. 

It all comes down to personal preference, and the whole world can tell you what’s best, but until you get on the saddle of the bike, it’s all just noise. Try both brands at least once, and make your choice from personal experience.

Sonos Roam 2 Review

More of the same from Sonos' most portable speaker

A minor refresh of its smallest portable speaker, the Sonos Roam 2 still boasts a good sound, portable design, and solid battery life, but it’s no longer the best speaker at its price point

Introduction

The original Roam speaker took the Sonos’ sound and made it truly portable. It was a speaker that I thoroughly enjoyed, awarding it full marks, so it’s with expectation that the Sonos Roam 2 arrives.

The Roam 2 isn’t a major update. Instead, it’s a milder one that seeks to resolve a couple of issues the original had. With that in mind, is it worth the upgrade?

Availability

The Sonos Roam 2 matches the price of the original at £179 / $169 / €179 / CA$229 / AU$279. Sonos hasn’t announced an SL version of the speaker that comes without the built-in microphones, but you can bet that when (or if) it does, it’ll be slightly cheaper.

The Roam Wireless Charger works with both the original and sequel and is priced at £49 / $49 / €49.

Nothing has really changed in terms of the aesthetic with the Roam 2. It’s the same size, the same shape, weight, look – everything.

All that’s changed is the addition of a dedicated Bluetooth button to avoid the confusion many had with the first model in terms of powering the speaker off or switching between Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modes. The new button makes that easier to do.

The Roam 2 works either upright or laid on its side, and there are no touch controls with physical buttons located on top (or its side) for playback, volume, and switching the microphone on or off. There are LEDs both at the bottom and the bottom, the latter indicates the battery charge (it’ll flash red/orange if the battery is low).

There is nothing particularly flashy about its aesthetics, though Sonos has launched the speaker in a wider range of colours than it initially did with the original. If you don’t fancy black or white, then there’s red, blue, and green for some added variety.

It still carries the same IP67 rating that allows it to be submerged in a depth of water 1m deep for thirty minutes. The USB-C port allows for charging or you could opt for the wireless charger but, in what’s become an annoying trend from Sonos, the price has gone up by £5 / $5.

Like with the original, it would have been nice if this speaker came with a notch to connect a strap. Some case options add this, but I haven’t tested any of them to judge whether they work with this updated version, although there’s no reason why they shouldn’t.

If there’s a theme emerging about the Roam 2, it’s that nothing much has changed and the same goes for the feature set, which is almost exactly the same as what was provided before.

There’s no jump in battery life, with the Roam 2 claiming up to 10 hours on a single charge. There’s a battery saver option in the Sonos app that turns the speaker off quicker when it is not in use to save some battery, plus there’s a WiFi Power Save feature that extends the battery when the speaker is on a Wi-Fi network.

Having played music on the Roam 2 (on Wi-Fi) for an hour at around 50% volume, the battery fell by 12%, so 10 hours doesn’t seem as if it’s far off the mark as long as you’re not pushing the speaker to its max volume.

Still, it’s a shame that Sonos hasn’t eked out more battery life from the Roam 2. There are speakers half the price of the Roam 2 in the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 , Marshall Willen , and Soundcore Motion 300 that can go for longer than the Roam 2 can.

Like the rest of Sonos’ portable speakers, there’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming, and connected to the Wi-Fi opens up Alexa and Sonos Voice Control, plus AirPlay 2 streaming with iOS devices.

There’s no Google Assistant voice control, which is not Sonos’ fault and is more about Google changing things on its side.

Setting up the speaker is less involved than it was before, the speaker emits a chime that the microphone on your smartphone recognises before it sets it up on the Wi-Fi.

Auto Trueplay optimises the sound for whatever space the Roam 2 is in, which removes the need to manually calibrate the speaker. This version of Trueplay differs from that on the Era speakers’ Quick Tune . You’ve got EQ options in the app to alter bass, treble, and loudness.

While the feature set hasn’t changed – if anything features have been left out – one benefit is that stereo pairing is possible across the Roam generations. It’s very easy to couple and uncouple a stereo pair in the app, though remember that the Roams can be used as rear speakers in a Sonos home cinema set-up.

Let’s talk (briefly) about the Sonos app , which has gone through a disastrous launch since it was updated. It’s meant to be streamlined, easier to use and customisable; I’ll speak for myself but I haven’t had many issues in terms of stability, but I do get regular prompts about updating the system (which I ignore since all the Sonos products have been updated).

Some features don’t seem to work for me such as grouping the speakers or the Sound Swap feature whereby pressing and holding the play button for two seconds sends a stream from one speaker to the Roam 2. If you want to group speakers, I find I have to do it manually in the app.

The Bluetooth specs feature v5.2 (SBC and AAC streaming), and the performance is fine with the connection only beginning to stutter the further you are from the speaker. You can switch to Wi-Fi from Bluetooth by tapping the button – though the sample I received tended to switch back to Bluetooth. A longer press will send it into its pairing mode

Sound Quality

• Virtually the same sound as the original version

A lot has changed since the Roam launched in 2021. One is that portable speakers have improved in terms of sound, the other is that portable speakers launched in the last couple of years have come down in price, so the Roam 2 finds itself in a more competitive category than the original did.

The performance is by and large the same as the first model. In fact, the biggest clue is that the 1st and 2nd gen Roam can be paired together to create a stereo pair. If the drivers or audio performance were different, that wouldn’t be possible.

And having listened to both pairs side-by-side, I struggle to tell the difference and anything I do hear that sounds slightly different, I put it down to an over-active imagination.

As far as I can tell from staring and listening to these two speakers, they sound very much alike. And part of me is re-evaluating the performance of the original. As I said, the landscape has changed but the Roam hasn’t evolved much with it.

So you still get a very good focus on vocals, with good midrange clarity and detail to pick up. The Roam wasn’t ever the sharpest sounding portable speaker, but for its size, you can pick up on most details in a song.

However, compared to the bigger JBL Charge 5 Wi-Fi , which is available for around the same price the Sonos doesn’t always come out on top. With a play of Porno Graffitti’s Melissa, the Roam has to handle lots of high-tempo instrumentation and it can struggle to sift through all the detail. Background detail gets lost in the shuffle, something that the bigger JBL speaker doesn’t have as much of a problem with as its bigger and taller soundstage allows for more space, and therefore more details to be picked up on.

The Roam 2 offers a nice twinkle with treble notes, though it’s not the brightest and sharpest high frequency performance you’ll ever hear from speakers at this price point, it’s perfectly decent in bringing out detail at the top end of the frequency range.

Its sense of dynamism is smaller than I remember and the difference between highs and lows doesn’t seem as pronounced. It’s not the most energetic performance but there’s a fine sense of rhythm that the Roam 2 is able to put out for its size. A little more energy would add to its excitement though.

It’s the bass regions that remain the weakest part. It sounds on the warm and rich side of the scale but lacks power and depth, which isn’t much of a surprise for a speaker of its size. If you’re after more wallop, the Charge  Wi-Fi can provide more.

Final Thoughts

The problem with the Sonos Roam 2 is that it’s more of the same. The same design (a loop would have been nice), basically the same features, and the same sound – all for the same price.

The JBL Charge 5 Wi-Fi doesn’t have the same breadth of features or smarts, but it sounds better, offering increased levels of clarity, detail and energy for a performance that sounds more natural than the Roam 2 can manage, You’ll have to put up with a larger size but you can get longer battery life into the bargain.

So the Roam 2 falls from the five-star status of the original speaker, the changes here feel modest to the point where if you have the 1st gen Roam, there’s not much point in upgrading to this one. If however you’ve yet to buy the Roam, then it remains the cheapest entry point into the world of Sonos, and still one of the best outdoor speakers .
