Toyota Corolla Cross: If a warning message is displayed

The multi-information display shows warnings for system malfunctions and incorrectly performed operations, and messages that indicate a need for maintenance.

When a message is displayed, perform the appropriate corrective action for the message.

If a warning message is displayed again after the appropriate actions have been performed, contact your Toyota dealer.

Additionally, if a warning light comes on or flashes at the same time that a warning message is displayed, take the appropriate corrective action for the warning light.

■Warning messages

The warning messages explained below may differ from the actual messages according to operation conditions and vehicle specifications.

■Warning buzzer

A buzzer may sound when a message is displayed.

The buzzer may not be audible if the vehicle is in a noisy location or if the audio system volume is high.

■If "Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace" is displayed

The engine oil level is low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add if necessary.

This message may appear if the vehicle is stopped on a slope. Move the vehicle to a level surface and check to see if the message disappears.

■If "Engine Stopped Steering Power Low" is displayed

This message is displayed if the engine is stopped while driving.

When steering wheel operations are heavier than usual, grip the steering wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usual.

■If "Auto power off to conserve battery" is displayed

Power was cut off due to the automatic power off function. Next time when starting the engine, increase the engine speed slightly and maintain that level for approximately 5 minutes to recharge the battery.

■If "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

The following systems may be malfunctioning.

Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.

  • The LED headlight system
  • AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) (if equipped)
  • The automatic headlight leveling system (if equipped)
  • Automatic High Beam

■If "AWD System Malfunction 2WD Mode Engaged Visit Your Dealer" or "AWD System Overheated Switching to 2WD Mode" is displayed

This message may be displayed when driving under extremely high load conditions.

Drive the vehicle at low speeds and stop the vehicle in a safe place with the engine operating until the message is cleared.

If the message is not cleared, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

■If "System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

Indicates one of the following systems is disabled.

  • PCS (Pre-Collision System)
  • LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
  • LDA (Lane Departure Alert)
  • AHB (Automatic High Beam)
  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Intuitive parking assist (if equipped)

■If a message that indicates the need for visiting your Toyota dealer is displayed

The system or part shown on the multi-information display is malfunctioning.

■If "System Stopped See Owner's Manual" is displayed

Follow the following correction methods.

  • Check the voltage of the battery
  • Check the sensors that the Toyota Safety System 3.0 uses for foreign matter covering them. Remove them if any.
  • Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the rear side radar sensors
  • Close the back door

Indicates the sensors may not be operating properly. When problems are solved and the sensors are operational, this indication may disappear by itself.

■If "System Stopped Front Camera Low Visibility See Owner's Manual" is displayed

  • PCS (Pre-Collision system)
  • Using the windshield wipers, remove the dirt or foreign matter from the windshield.
  • Using the air conditioning system, defog the windshield.
  • Close the hood, remove any stickers, etc. to clear the obstruction infront of the front camera.

■If "System Stopped Front Camera Out of Temperature Range Wait until Normal Temperature" is displayed

  • If the front camera is hot, such as after the vehicle is parked in the sun, use the air conditioning system to decrease the temperature around the front camera
  • If a sunshade was used when the vehicle was parked, depending on its type, the sunlight reflected from the surface of the sunshade may cause the temperature of the front camera to become excessively high
  • If the front camera is cold, such after the vehicle is parked in an extremely cold environment, use the air conditioning system to increase the temperature around the front camera

■If "System Stopped Front Radar Sensor Blocked Clean Radar Sensor" is displayed

  • Check if there is any foreign matter attached to the radar sensor or radar sensor cover and clean them if necessary
  • This message may be displayed when driving in an open area with few nearby vehicles or structures, such as a desert, grasslands, suburbs, etc.

The message may be cleared by driving the vehicle in an area with structures, vehicles, etc., nearby.

■If "System Stopped Front Radar Sensor Out of Temperature Range Wait until Normal Temperature" is displayed

The temperature of the radar sensoris outside of the operating range.

Wait for the temperature to become appropriate.

■If "System Stopped Front Radar In Self Calibration See Owner's Manual" is displayed

  • Check if there is any foreign matter matter attached to the radar sensor or radar sensor cover and clean them if necessary.
  • The radar sensor may be misaligned and will be adjusted automatically while driving. Continue driving for a while.

■If "Cruise Control Unavailable See Owner's Manual" is displayed

  • Cruise control

A message is displayed when the driving assist switch is pushed repeatedly.

Press the driving assist switch quickly and firmly.

■If "Maintenance Required Soon" is displayed

Indicates that all maintenance according to the driven distance on the maintenance schedule* should be performed soon.

Comes on approximately 4500 miles (7200 km) after the message has been reset. If necessary, perform maintenance. Please reset the message after the maintenance is performed.

*: Refer to the separate "Scheduled Maintenance" or "Owner's Manual Supplement" for the maintenance interval applicable to your vehicle.

■If "" is displayed

Indicates that all maintenance is required to correspond to the driven distance on the maintenance schedule*.

Comes on approximately 5000 miles (8000 km) after the message has been reset. (The indicator will not work properly unless the message has been reset.) Perform the necessary maintenance. Please reset the message after the maintenance is performed.

■If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner's Manual is displayed

  • If "Engine Coolant Temp High" is displayed, follow the instructions accordingly.
  • "Smart Key System malfunction"
  • "Braking Power Low"
  • "Oil Pressure Low"

  If you have a flat tire

  taking out the jack,   replacing a flat tire,   diagnosis system,   check for intermittent problems.

Radar Cruise Control Unavailable

From what I understand, the radar cruise control uses the radar sensor under the front Toyota emblem and the camera high up on the windshield. Both of these need to be clear of debris for the system to able to "see". There is a lot in this video but it does cover how this system works and what can cause it to display that message. Also, this is not a hybrid only system so other forum RAV4 Gen 5 threads describe this issue and message.

I have had my Rav4 hybrid almost 2 years. Today I got that message for the first time. After I stopped and restarted the car when I had reached my first destination it was working again. The car was clean so nothing was blocked.  

I got that message once when it was sleeting. Covered the front radar sensor with slush. I just stopped, wiped off the slush and the problem went away.

I had the same thing happen as FKHeath. You can stop and clean it off, but if you are on the interstate going 70mph and 10 at night, probably not the best idea to stop. You can still use normal cruise control by pressing and hold the "cruise on" button for a few seconds. You will see the cruise icon turn on, but the vehicle silhouette wont be there.  

The pressing and holding of the cruise control button is documented in the op manual. This method allows for you to turn on a conventional non-radar controlled cruise control. Do not expect it to slow you down as you approach another car; it's only maintaining the speed you set (old school style).  

Concensus then is that this is likely not a hardware failure, just something that can happen if the sensor is blocked/confused by something.

Had the exact same thing happen in some wintry mix sort of snow/slush - none of it was sticking to the highway, but it sure accumulated on the front of the car. Radar Unavailable! After I stopped and cleared it off, everything worked normally. Nothing to worry about  

Happened to wife's XLE H once last winter. Had freezing rain previous night and suspect sensor was glazed over. Similar thing happened to a Honda Ridgeline I was driving. A vehicle splashed me while traveling in opposite direction and kicked off cruise control. Would not reset until stopped and restarted vehicle. A bit unnerving first time it happens as dash lights up and car looses power.

Cruise Control is Unavailable

Yesterday while traveling on the freeway and using cruise control my 2016 Prius beeped loudly, displayed the message "Cruise Control is Unavailable" and dropped me out of cruise. I turned cruise off and back on, and got the same message. There's also an orange indicator light blinking that looks like a car hitting another car, and the "Cruise Control is Unavailable" message now displays on the info panel every ten seconds*. Collision prevention is also unavailable. Was this something I did wrong? Is there a way to get cruise control and collision prevention back? I do have an appointment on Monday to have the car looked at, but wanted to check in with y'all too, since this has been a helpful source in the past. I do not own a Gen 4, but in Gen 2 and on a v, if you have the car in B mode, you can't use CC.

Do you have the radar cruise control? Because if so, I have to believe it could be something like dirty sensors or a failure of the system. Something causing the feedback to be invalid. In any case, since this is a new vehicle and still under warranty, and since cruise control can be a "safety" issue, I really wouldn't want to guess. If it's something simple? Let the dealership figure it out. If it's something more complicated. Let the dealership figure it out. Hopefully they come back and tell you it's was something very simple. Or they come back and tell you the whole system needs to be replaced. Or something in the middle. I doubt highly it's something you did wrong. My advice however is just to get it checked out ASAP. Once you find out what it is? Let us know.

Page 283 of manual "Always keep the sensor and grille cover clean to ensure that the vehicle-tovehicle distance control operates properly. (Some obstructions, such as snow, ice and plastic objects, cannot be detected by the obstruction sensor.) Dynamic radar cruise control (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode) will be canceled if dirt is detected."

In my gen 3, the dcc would kick out if I put the windshield wipers at max. Have not tested that "feature" in a gen 4 yet, especially with automatic washers. jp edit : Try it out, manually turn the wipers to max while on dcc on the gen 4. It will kick you out of dcc pronto ! Just tested ! Just like gen 3.

Gen4 is radar based and it is behind the plastic Toyota emblem on the front bumper. Keep it clean and don't wax it or anything else than what you got at delivery. If it still refuses to work, dealer.....

Do you have a clear bra? My very first thought was someone doing you a favor put a clear bra over the hood emblem not realizing it could screw with the radar.  
Okay, gang, here's what came from the trip to the dealer. I know you're all on the edge of your seats, so I won't make you wait any longer: NOTHING. They hooked it up to diagnostics, did some sort of reboot, and nothing showed up as wrong. Turned the car on and cruise and pre-collision were working just fine. The dealer did say that sometimes the car make decide that cruise is not warranted (for whatever reason) and de-activate it, and sometimes when that happens it stays deactivated until you reboot the system. That's not much of an answer but it's all I got, sorry. So, can anyone recommend a system to interface with the car's computer? I'll ask in another thread too, but figured someone in this one would know. I have a Mac laptop, but it can run Windows too. I'd like to be able to read the codes and, upon occasion, do some programming without having to find a dealer.  
Huh sounds like BS to me but it's what we got. I was actually thinking about this on my way in the door at work (after using radar cruise most of the way in). As I skimmed the manual I saw a way to override the radar system and return to a constant speed cruise. I don't have the book with me now but it was something like hold the on/off toggle down for like for a second or two. maybe if it occurs again give it a try, see if the constant speed cruise will work which may confirm it's the radar being funny.

So, 20 minutes into what turned out to be a 6.5 hour drive (normally 3.5) I'm in adaptive cruise and the car steams ahead towards the car clearly in front and no more than 10m away. I slammed on. Message comes up on the HUD saying warning check the dash. On the dash is the message about radar cruise being temporarily unavailable.  So I cleared the message pressing the back arrow button. 3 sec later the message is back. It takes up all of the drivers display. Ad infinitum.  Basically, not only am I now driving 6.5 hours without cruise but the drivers display (MID) is unusable.

Light snow fall but nothing that should upset the radar. 

Ended up pulling into a services after a few hours for a break. All working again. Switch off and on.

Anyone seen anything like this?

Unrelated, but are the wing mirrors heated? Mine seemed like they were full of condensation fog and barely usable. All blurred. Tried various air con settings to no effect.

Nick, I was just going to post the same experience that you’ve had. This was on the M1 travelling north on Saturday into the storm. I first got a warning the the collision avoidance system was not operating, message taking up the MID space used the return/back key to eliminate the message. Then got a ACC message saying it was unavailable and like you cleared using the return button. Message pops up again, repeat and repeat, I finally got it cleared to see the MID by turning on the the ACC then immediately turned it off, no message well at least for some time. It was a pain and whilst I understand the need to warn the driver I don’t think it should blank out the whole display.

There was snow build up on the radar head so understand the reason it blanked out and I think it will always struggle in those cold intensely wet/snowy conditions. The previous Subaru had the twin HD camera systems which could switch off but never like this I was a bit disappointed at the lost of a major safety system and wonder why there does not appear to be some form of heater to keep the radar head clear.   

The wing mirrors clear when the rear heated windows switch is operated, this has been the case for a few of my previous cars.

Does it not also need to front camera (as well as the radar) in order to detect lane markings and know which lane the car in front is in? I can imagine visibility becoming an issue in snow sooner than the radar ... 

I guess that you might have been able to switch to classic cruise control  had you wanted to ... ?

The lane guidance is definitely the camera but I think the collision avoidance and ACC is down to the radar system but that switches off and on all the time if the markings are missing or the sun is blanking the camera etc., it gives you a warning the waits until the situation has cleared and then automatically switches back on. This is the same as your car I guess? I didn’t try standard CC I was happier being in control and monitoring the situation myself, it’s just good to have the safety systems in place and operational as sometimes they can help respond if the unforeseen happens.

As an aside the Subaru system is able to differentiate between trucks, cars, bikes and humans so has algorithms that take the likely behave to count built into the systems. I think the current systems is even better than the one I had in my previous XV.  Each system has its benefits and drawbacks but in the end it’s the ‘nut behind the wheel’ that matters.

Did I read somewhere that the radar head is behind the Toyota Badge on the front?

If so, perhaps a future feature ought to have some trace heating to keep it snow and ice free. It is quite a large snow catcher. Maybe keeping it well polished or something like rainX might help to stop snow and ice adhering to it?

Yes, that’s the location but based on my experience I can not see that it’s heated as mine had collected a good mat of snow as had the gap around the front of the bonnet area and below the number plate.

My previous Kodiaq had the same problem with ice/snow building up and stopping the front radar working - but at least the (non-digital) instrument display was still usable. This seems a very silly, and dangerous design by Toyota. Surprised I didn't read about this in the many US reviews of the "prime" - many of whom seemed to drive in cold/snowy conditions regularly - I wonder if they have a heater in those markets?

Interesting to find out if they have heater I’d certainly try to have one fitted if it was practical but I’d think the radar head would be one design across the range. Maybe in the states they have not taken to using the ACC controls I have friends who would not know how to turn it on if their lives depended on it.

Looks like BMW, Audi, MB and Tesla Model Y have heaters (and obviously a well known limitation of the technology). It suggests it's possible so would be interesting if Toyota came up with a retrofit or anyone comes up with a DIY option.

So far I haven't experienced the issue but if it only happens occasionally in very poor conditions, I'd probably want to have full control anyway. If it happens every time there's a heavy frost then something I'd consider.

There are some tips you will want to keep in mind when utilizing DRCC. There are five conditions in which this system will not operate. The first is when visibility in the front of the vehicle is poor due to bad weather. Next, if there is something on the sensor—such as mud, ice, or bugs—the system will not work. If you are driving on a curved road where the turn length is narrow, the system will turn off. If the leading vehicle is pulling an empty trailer, has a narrow rear surface area, or is a motorcycle, the system will not work. It is important to keep these things in mind as you drive and utilize DRCC.

Both my Nissan Pulsar and Toyota C-HR had the same issue when the radar sensor became obstructed by snow / mud. 

I must admit that I'm not a fan of the automatic cruise control, I usually just use the constant speed function,but then again only very rarely drive on motorways. 

Aww you should try it, it's great! Although you do have to pay almost as much attention as you do with normal cruise control as the system drives like a learner and doesn't handle big changes by the car in front (e.g. If they brake firmly mine slams on the anchors  even harder with several car lengths clearance, instead of braking firmly and progressively and using up that buffer of space, and if the car ahead shoots off it'll pause for a sec then do the same! I've learned to just turn it off in such situations and go back to my normal constant speed with a buffer gap style so I don't keep accelerating and braking like the person in front)

I can see this car is not going to be a good winter car for me tho' - Doesn't warm up unless I'm going fast, and now I have the joy of it warning me that there might be ice - The warning wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't plastered over the HUD and MFD, blocking actually useful information!

I wish it was like notifications, where you could tell it to not show some of them, or at least just show it once and not keep doing it randomly!

Thanks Ernie. Two annoying issues then. The lack of resilience in the cruise control. It's a radar. Light snow in my case. No build up discernible when I parked up at the services. My Merc several years ago had ACC which seemed bullet proof. Heavy rain, snow, you name it. Still worked without ever an issue.

But the fact that the stupid message effectively eliminates use of the MID for the rest of the drive is something that I hope Toyota can fix even if they can't sort the temperamental radar. Can't exactly stop the car and restart it on the motorway. ACC all just worked fine just now. Drive back from SW London. 5hrs. Chucking it down. All worked. Strange how light snow made it go crazy.

Adaptive cruise should be moded off the radar only.

It was too light a snow and the air temperature was 4C so I doubt anything had built up. No sign of anything on the car when I stopped it. Bizarre. 

But all fine just now in the drive back.

When it went wrong it was headed hard over to run into the back of the car in front. Error message only came up just after I hit the brakes hard. Road was clear, no snow. It was snowing lightly but nothing of significance.

How do I operate the cruise control in my vehicle?

To use Cruise Control, turn it on first by pressing the button on the end of the control stalk behind the lower right side of the steering wheel. The green cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display to show the system is ready.

Then accelerate to the speed you want, and press the stalk down to set it. The SET indicator will appear underneath the CRUISE CONTROL icon to let you know you can take your foot off the accelerator.

If you need to increase your speed, lift and hold the stalk up until you reach the speed you want, and then release it.

To reduce the set speed, push the stalk down and hold it to slow down to your target speed, and then release it.

To temporarily suspend cruise control, pull the stalk towards you, or tap the brakes.

To resume the set speed, push the lever up briefly.

Cruise Control Issues

Yesterday we took a drive.  About three hours into the drive we stopped and got something to eat.  After we got back into the car we tried to enable cruise control we got the "!" indicator AND the text message "Cruise Control Not Available".  In looking at the online manual it indicates "The dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range system cannot be used temporarily.  Use the system when it becomes available again."  I have owned the car for about three years so I know how to enable cruise control and characteristics.  

We have tried shutting off the car and then powering and taking it for a ride, but the same issue.  We have also tried letting it sit in the garage overnight to get a full charge and then trying it again.  Same issue.  We have hooked up our OBDC Blue Driver and tried to see about getting error codes but no errors were displayed.  All items were checked, except "Dynamic Radar" and "Air Bags".  All other systems reported no errors.  All other features appeared to be operating just fine.  Only thing that would make sense to me would be something wrong with the "Dynamic Radar".  I don't think it can be dirt or bugs on the sensor (doesn't make sense), but taking it in for full car wash in morning just in case.   Any suggestions?

I would say that your last comment is the most likely cause

Alternatively if anything has caused damage (inside or outside) to the windshield area where the ADAS sensors are located then this also could be the cause along with damage to the grille area if there is a radar or camera located behind the badge area

This morning I verified No windshield damage and no apparent damage on the grill area below the Toyota emblem.  Took car to car wash (manual wand type and also a auto car wash) no help.  Just in case, checked all fuses to ensure none where blown.  Local Toyota Dealer indicated they can troubleshoot issue ($200) and depending on results this could be covered by warranty.  Unless someone can give different possible testing, taking it to dealer next week.

Issue has been determined kind of.  Took vehicle to dealer and after they spent several hours troubleshooting.  Dealer indicated that there were no errors when using the OBD tools.  They took the vehicle for a spin and verified the issue.  When the primary tech could not determine issue a senior tech took it for a test drive and duplicated the issue.  Finally, after I was waiting for five hours the dealership indicated they found the problem.  They indicated they disconnect and charged the battery.  After that everything worked great.  They recommended replacing the battery, but it was too close to closing.  I took the vehicle home and its been several weeks now and everything still works fine without doing anything.  SO, I am thinking it was the dealership fixed the issue by cleaning the primary battery contacts.  So, this experince cost me about $200, but the dealer ended up doing a great job.  Shout out to Carson City Toyota in that they did a great job.

    Radar cruise control Read post 11. It mentions something about braking system. So the dealer will need to really look into the system fault since it involves both the radar cruise control and the forward facing camera.
