What do you get when you cross rodeo with skiing? The wild and wacky skijoring

What do you get when you cross rodeo with skiing? The wild and wacky Skijoring of course. Every winter, thousands of people descend on the old mining town of Leadville, Colorado, high in the Rocky Mountains, for one of the most popular skijoring races in the United States. It started as a practical mode of transportation in Scandinavia and became popular in the Alps around 1900. Today's sport features horses at full gallop towing skiers by rope over jumps and around obstacles as they try to lance suspended hoops with a baton, typically a ski pole that's cut in half. LEADVILLE, Colo. (AP) — Nick Burri clicks into his ski bindings, squats to stretch his knees and scans the snowy race course. Moments later, he’s zipping past a series of gates at high speed and hurtling off jumps. But it’s not gravity pulling him toward the finish line: It’s the brute force of a quarter horse named Sirius.

Welcome to skijoring: an extreme — and quirky — winter sport that celebrates the unlikely melding of rodeo and ski culture in the U.S. Mountain West.

It’s a heart-pumping, white-knuckle competition in which horses — and sometimes dogs, snowmobiles and even cars — tow skiers by rope at speeds that can top 40 mph (64 kph) over jumps as high as 8 feet (2.4 meters) and around obstacles as they try to lance suspended hoops with a baton, typically a ski pole that’s cut in half.

Every winter, thousands of people converge on the old mining town of Leadville, Colorado, high in the Rocky Mountains — elevation 10,158 feet (3,096 meters) — lining downtown’s main street and packing the saloons to witness one of the most popular skijoring races in the country. The spectacle, billed as “The Granddaddy of ’em All,” has been a tradition here since 1949.

“It’s just the pure adrenaline that gets me to do it. ... And then getting these two different groups of people together with the riders and the skiers. Usually they don’t hang out, and getting them together, we mesh pretty well,” said Burri, who wears fringed leather pants with his ski gear in a nod to the sport’s Western vibe.

Rob Romeijn protests property taxes outside Rockdale County offices in Conyers, Ga., on April 23, 2024. Romeijn says the increase in the taxable value of his house is unfair, but future increases in taxable values could be curbed if Georgia voters approve a referendum in November. (AP Photo/Jeff Amy)

Skijoring draws its name from the Norwegian word skikjoring, meaning “ski driving.” It started as a practical mode of transportation in Scandinavia and became popular in the Alps around 1900.

Today’s sport is inherently dangerous, and injuries are not uncommon among riders and skiers alike. Indeed, one of the first riders in the Leadville race earlier this month toppled off his horse and had to be helped off the track as he shook his head in confusion. Burri did well in the competition despite skiing with a separated shoulder from a hard spill during a race two weeks earlier.

“Wrong turn, taking a jump wrong, go down wrong. You could end your season. Then hospital bills rack up, but it’s just for the thrill of it,” said Burri, a 26-year-old from Meeker, Colorado.

Another skier, Jason Decker, pulled out of the race at the last minute because he broke his collarbone in a crash during a recent contest. He sometimes wears a protective cup, a valuable lesson learned after being hit in the groin by a flying chunk of snow flung by a horse’s hoof.

“It’s not uncommon that my hands are shaking a little bit even after all this time, because that horse’s nostrils are flaring and I’m about ready to grab a rope that’s attached to that saddle. And if I’m not ready to go, then things can go bad real quickly,” said Decker, a 43-year-old engineer from Pagosa Springs, Colorado, who has been skiing since he was 2 and skijoring for 14 years.

Savannah McCarthy, a competitive skijorer since she was 12, describes a similar nervous energy before she mounts her horse for a race. But once she is speeding down the course, her world goes silent.

“I don’t hear a thing when I’m running,” she said. “When it’s happening, you really don’t have time to think about anything. But when you get done, you’re like, ‘Holy cow, that was insane,’” said McCarthy, a 24-year-old financial broker from Durango, Colorado, who has won the Leadville race nine times.

One of her more memorable moments was when her horse slipped, pulled back and head-butted her, breaking her nose. Then there was the time she lost control of her horse following a race and smashed into a minivan.

Both riders and skiers say those moments — the crashes, the speed, the raucous crowd and the camaraderie — make skijoring what it is. And the sport is growing.

Loren Zhimanskova, chair of Skijor USA, which promotes the sport and helps organize races across the country, said skijoring is becoming more mainstream with the rise of social media, and she hopes it will one day be featured in the Winter Olympics. Skijoring is particularly popular in Poland and Switzerland, as well as in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana in the U.S.

Five years ago, about 350 riders and the same amount of skiers were competing in the U.S., she said. Now, there are more than 1,000 competitors in each of those categories, and the number of races has increased from about 15 a year to more than 30. One event in Shakopee, Minnesota, consistently draws a crowd of 10,000 spectators.

Despite its growing popularity, getting the sport into the Olympics has proved challenging.

There is no official governing body, no uniform set of rules and regulations and no point system that would allow riders to advance to the Winter Games. Plus, every track is different, and every race has its own unique traditions and sometimes stubborn organizers.

Still, Zhimanskova is pushing to include skijoring as a non-competitive demonstration sport or to be included in the torch relay at the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

“I think it’s one of the most romantic and visually pleasing sports that you could see. It’s just magnificent,” she said. “Everyone loves snow ... and then you add horses to that. And then you add cowboys and cowgirls to that. And then you add skiing to that and bonfires and fun music. I mean, all the elements that go into a skijoring event, in my opinion, are really feel-good elements.”

HOTEL BARILOCHE SUITES

Bariloche city hotel, hotel park bariloche, hotel slalom ski, bariloche ski hotel, hotel sol bariloche, hotel american suites, mizu bariloche, soft hotéis, resolución 23/2014.

An Ode to Rock Skis

travel rock rodeo ski

My favorite skis right now, the first pair I’ll reach for this season and those that I’ll keep going back to for much of the winter, didn’t win a 2021 Editors’ Choice Award . You won’t find them in this year’s Gear Guide or at your local shop or likely anywhere online. And even if you did find them, I doubt you’d consider spending the money. Because they’re 10 years old; an original pair of rocket-red Voilé Chargers. They’re my rock skis.

Voilé launched the Charger in 2010, and I’m pretty sure we called it a game changer in that year’s Gear Guide. They measured a broad 112 mm underfoot, a middle-of-the-road width at the time in its 181 cm length. And while a skier of my compact stature would predictably struggle to thread a ski of that size between Vermont’s snug hardwoods, I’ve found its heavily rockered tip and tail make it delightfully surfable.

They’re my favorite for how they ski, for how the tips float through fresh snow or heavy snow or unfilled water bars or whatever brambles poke through October’s thin snowpack. They make crummy conditions fun. With edges dulled by time and bases long void of wax, there’s nothing sharp to catch or hang up; the ride is easygoing and smooth. Patient. Forgiving.

For how well they ski, they’re an unsightly mess. Both tails are delaminating from being shoved into muddy trailhead snowbanks dozens of times too many. The bases are gouged and carved like an old farmhouse’s wooden floors. And they’ve held at least four pairs of bindings, with the filled holes with mismatched plugs to show for it.

They’re also my favorite for what they ski. Long dispossessed of flawless bases, they’re eager to be raked across thinly covered rocks and through grass and leaves that will only add to their patina. It’s a freeing feeling, to not be worried about coreshots or blown edges. And there’s freedom in skiing before the season should really begin or well after its ended; before the snowpack is thick and after it’s begun to melt, patchy and mixed with mud. Rock skis offer freedom to ski whatever, whenever, wherever.

Mostly, they’re my favorite for what they have skied. Each time I click in, I’m reminded of the places I’ve been on these Chargers. Of following Glen Plake around the Eastern Sierra, dropping into a hallway of limestone on freeheel bindings. Of being so puckered in Chamonix with Andreas Fransson that my sweaty palms soaked through my gloves. Of November storms that plastered the not-yet-opened resorts with enough snow to make it seem like midwinter. When I skin on these skis later this month or early next month or whenever the first coating of snow falls across our mountains, memories of these skis’ heyday and their long, beautiful retirement will rush back. Someday, when the tails delaminate too close to the bindings or I catastrophically blow an edge, I’ll write an obituary for these Voilé Chargers. They won’t have been taken from this world too soon, but they will be remembered for a long, healthy life. They’ll be survived by many, many others in the quiver, maybe one of which will achieve the same loved-past-its-prime status. They’ll be gone but never, ever forgotten.

Love it! I too have a valued pair of rock skis (well several actually depending on what kind of skiing, ’cause ya know, nordic…) I’m always saddened on the day of catastrophic failure of a trusted pair of rock skis, and I retire them with honor to the overhead racks in my garage (much to my wife’s chagrin…) But I am consoled by the fact that the next rock ski candidate in my quiver is already lined up for action.

Music to my ears! Skiing in the Midwest, especially da YooPee, one needs rock skis. My go-to setup is a pair of the gold Volkl Gotamas (the kind before Volkl went all goofy with the full-rocker thing) and yes, Buddha is long gone. Old 22 designs tele bindings with stiffy springs allow these monsters to handle anything from pow to, well, rocks. They’ve had more ptex added than was there originally…but they go anywhere, don’t demand much attention and always take care of the old guy riding them! I’ve got newer fancier stuff, but when the going gets tough (or rocky, or icy), the Gotamas shine!!

Hey Tyler, strong work on describing your beloved and true Voile Chargers. I too, have a pair of the rocket red babies, mounted with freeheel Tele bindings. I like to ski them early in the season in Idaho when the snow is at low tide or picking lines in little gullies holding snow or shaded aspects in the Aspen. It’s not about speed or depth or angle early in the season, it’s about playing and being out there. And yes, memories do trickle back to the places we’ve been and the friends we shared the days with.

Thanks for rekindling the stoke!

I never thought of those “rock skis” (belonging to someone you know) this way. Of course they bring back great memories. Guess I’ll let them continue to occupy space in the storage closet. Thanks for the new perspective on what I previously referred to as clutter!

Rock skis ROCK! Back in the 1980s my 10-year-old-brother and I hopped on a triple lift with a bearded, wool-wearing telemarker. He lifted his 3-pin mounted skis for a sec to reposition himself and the bases revealed a spider-web of p-tex stretching from tip to tail. My little brother stammered “What’s that all over your skis??”. The telemarker looked amused, gently tugged on his beard and gazed upon the lift-side rock-strewn couloirs. Then slowly, thoughtfully, replied “It’s a map of where I’ve been, and where you don’t want to go”.

ERIC BLEHM: MEET YOUR HEROES Eric Blehm’s roots in snowboarding run deep. He started riding during the sport’s infancy, and after college became an editor at Transworld SNOWboarding Magazine. Years later, he was in a lift line when a fellow rider saw the “Craig Kelly is my Co-Pilot” sticker on his board, and asked Blehm: “Who is Craig Kelly?” He was floored by the notion that there were snowboarders out there who didn’t know who Craig was. And this inspired him to write The Darkest White. Listen Now »

Top End Rock N Rodeo Muster: Music, Rides & Riders!

Posted by Nichapa Ratchanathammachai | Feb 16, 2024 | Events Calendar | 0 |

Top End Rock N Rodeo Muster: Music, Rides & Riders!

Hold on to your hats… Rodeo Promotions NT is proud to announce its inaugural  Top End Rock n Rodeo Muster  to be held on May 11; a unique combined rodeo and festival set to pull in punters from near and far for a full-on day of rodeo events, music, food and kids carnival rides.

Tickets go on sale this Friday 16 February through Ticketebo.

Knowing Darwin’s great love for country music, the Rock n Rodeo Muster has announced headline acts  The Wolfe Brothers  and  Casey Barnes.  Also on the bill is 2024 Golden Guitar Awards New Talent of the Year,  Max Jackson,  alongside local talents  Stereobate  and  The Fame Junkies.

Spurred by the success of their wildly popular Northern Golden Buckle Series in 2023, Rodeo Promotions NT decided to create an even bigger and better rodeo experience.

From Promoter Russell Simpson: “Knowing we had to turn vast numbers of locals and tourists away from our previous events, we decided to move to the Darwin Showgrounds. This gives everyone the opportunity to attend and enjoy the great facilities they have on offer.

“We have a full event rodeo, five bands, a great range of local food, carnival rides for the kids, and—another first for Darwin— Mulletfest . Where else would you want to be?”

The Top End Rock n Rodeo Muster forms part of the 2024 Northern Golden Buckle series. Rodeo Promotions NT hopes the growth of the Top End Rock n Rodeo Muster will not only help local rodeo competitors to succeed in their sport, but that it will showcase local artists and give them opportunities they thought were out of reach.

The musical pairing of The Wolfe Brothers  first charmed the public in 2012’s Australia’s Got Talent; the Tasmanian duo have been captivating audiences and collecting accolades ever since. Having completed a self-described apprenticeship under Australian country music legend Lee Kernaghan, the brothers have travelled countless miles across Australia, the US and Canada to ignite audiences with their high energy live shows.

Their 13-year reign has delivered four #1 ARIA Country albums, 19 #1 singles on the ARIA  Country Music Chart, and nine Golden Guitars – three from the 2024 Country Music Awards for latest album, ‘Livin’ The Dream’.

From Tom Wolfe: “We can’t wait to bring our show to the Top End Rock n Rodeo Muster, it’s been far too long since we have been to the Top End and we can’t wait to play for everyone!”

Another Tassie talent,  Casey Barnes  is one of the most popular touring acts in Australia. Following a massive 2023 where Casey picked up two Golden Guitars (Album of the Year and Top Selling Album of the Year) and an APRA for album ‘Light It Up’, Casey’s whirlwind 2024 touring schedule now includes headlining Darwin’s own Top End Rock n Rodeo.

‘Light It Up’ debuted at #1 on the ARIA Australian Country Album chart, #3 on the All-Genre Australian Album chart, and boasts over twenty months in the Country Top 20. Casey’s catalogue has amassed over 60 million streams.

Max Jackson , freshly crowned 2024’s New Talent of the Year at the Golden Guitar Awards, has made a big impact in the country music scene since her debut in 2020. From winning Toyota Star Maker (previous winners include Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan), to having a #1 single in the Countrytown National Airplay Charts and being invited to play at CMA Fest in Nashville and SXSW in Sydney, Max has proved her chops when it comes to country.

travel rock rodeo ski

Proudly supporting talent local to the Top End, Rock n Rodeo also welcomes Darwin’s own country-rock band,  Stereobate , and cover band  The Fame Junkies , known for performing chart-toppers ranging from the ‘60s to today.

Another newcomer to Darwin is  Mulletfest . An ode to the iconic cut, Mulletfest has heats across Australia in the quest to find the most epic mullets across multiple categories, including ‘Junior’ age brackets and a range from ‘Everyday’ to ‘Extreme’. While the musicians and rodeo performers take care of the party at the front… Mulletfest has attendees covered for the party in the back.

Laura and the Mulletfest crew are excited to bring Mulletfest on tour to Darwin for the first time in the top end:

“We know there are brilliant mullets in Darwin like last year’s heat winner at Red CentreNATS in Alice Springs, Kieran. How good is your mullet looking? Log onto the Mulletfest website to register and strut your stuff with Darwin’s best!”

The Top End Rock N Rodeo Muster takes everything that makes a good rodeo — bulls, broncs and barrels — and expands it into a family-friendly festival, the likes of which Darwin has never seen before. Fans of country music, competing cowboys and girls, and carnivals will all find something to delight them at the Darwin Showgrounds on May 11.

Tickets through Ticketebo from Feb 16.

28th Hueco Rock Rodeo

February 16-18, 2024.

The Hueco Rock Rodeo is back!   After several years of hiatus, the premiere outdoor bouldering competition in the United States is on for February 16-18, 2024—and these classic problems are calling your name. We are re-imagining this festival to celebrate not only the spirit of competition that beats at the heart of elite climbing, but also the meaningful impact climbers can have on our climbing landscapes and the communities we share them with.

The Rodeo will have you rubbing shoulders with bouldering heroes like competitors Nina Williams and Paul Robinson as you compete on some of the greatest blocs in the country, and engaging with community conversations about some of the most important topics in modern climbing. Gather at the AAC’s Hueco Rock Ranch for a weekend of climbing, awards, food, music, and community. You won’t want to miss your chance to flex your bouldering skills alongside the best in the world!

Competition Rules

The history of this region spans millennia and is rich with the cultures of several Native American tribes, including the Isleta Pueblo, Comanche Nation, Kiowa Tribe, and the Mescalero Apache Tribe. These communities have all contributed significantly to the vibrant tapestry of history and culture on this land.

The Tigua people of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, in particular, have been stewards of this region for generations before we know it as it exists today. Texas State Parks along with the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a federally recognized Native American tribe and sovereign nation, protect the irreplaceable resources within this sacred place.

As climbers, we acknowledge the immense privilege it is to engage with this land. We ask that you approach your time here with humility and gratitude, recognizing the deep heritage and spiritual significance it holds for the Native American tribes who have called it home for countless generations. Please travel lightly and respectfully, honoring the privilege of being guests on this sacred land. - Nicole Roque, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

In this short film, discover the atmosphere of past Rodeos:

At this year’s Rodeo, we’re doubling down on the aspects that make this event so special: hardcore competition, and convening the many stakeholders of this beautiful landscape. There will be plenty of time to celebrate—but we’re convinced that what makes this event special is the unique blend of try-hard and thoughtful conversations that we can engage in as a community.
