Tesco Bank Travel Insurance Review

Mr. Travel

Everything you need to know before you buy travel insurance from Tesco Bank!

The experts say:

Tesco Bank's Premier travel insurance is one of the top-rated policies out there, earning an impressive 80% score from Which? and a 3rd place ranking amongst all 71 providers. It also boasts a superior Covid Cover rating, so you can feel confident that you'll be covered wherever your journey may take you. Medical expenses are generously covered up to £20 million, and baggage cover stands at £3000. Cancellation cover reaches up to £10,000 and there's no excess payable on medical claims either. Fairer Finance gives it 4 stars, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and dependable policy.

What Tesco Bank customers are saying right now:

  • 🙂 Positive customer service experience from the person handling their enquiry.
  • 😃 Quickest and easiest way to get policy details is by email.
  • 🤩 Thousands of people out of work, Tesco can employ more tele-handlers.
  • 😊 Option to speak to a member of the customer service team after running the automated message through twice without pressing any buttons.
  • 🙂 Waived existing charges due to exceptional circumstances.
  • 😡 Poor customer service, long wait times and lack of communication.
  • 😤 Unclear policies and a lack of transparency with pricing.
  • 🤮 Racketeering tactics used to increase policy costs.

Tesco Bank customer reviews summary

Tesco Bank travel insurance has been met with mixed reviews from customers. While some appreciate the competitive rates and convenient features, others have had difficulty navigating the application process or been frustrated by long wait times on the phone. On the plus side, Tesco Bank offers an easy way to cancel auto-renewal and provides additional discounts when using a Clubcard. However, their communication after purchase may leave something to be desired. Overall, Tesco Bank travel insurance is worth considering for its competitive rates and convenience, but it may not be the best option if you're looking for great customer service. Score: 6/10

What types of cover does Tesco Bank offer?

Tesco Bank offers a wide range of travel insurance policies, which is excellent news as it means you are more likely to find an option that works for you.

Annual multi-trip cover

Tesco offers annual multi-trip policies, meaning you only have to buy insurance once to cover all the trips you take over a year. You’ll need to ensure you meet the requirements for each of those trips you make so that it’s suitable for you. For example, each trip has to be under 31 days long, and you have to start each trip from your home in the UK and return to it at the end.

Multi-trip cover can mean you get better value buying cover in this way, as opposed to taking out cover every time you go away. Plus, it’s more convenient too.

Single trip

Sometimes, purchasing a single trip policy makes economic sense after running a price comparison and if you plan to go abroad only once in the next 12 months. You can buy cover for the length of your trip, and you protect yourself against any eligible losses, such as a missed departure, from when you purchase it.

Tesco’s backpacker travel insurance cover option is for if you’re going away on a long trip of up to 18 months. During that period, you can travel to various countries without needing to purchase individual policies for each destination. It’s a good idea if you’re planning a long trip in retirement and off on an exciting adventure. However, it’s unsuitable if you are moving abroad.

The company also offers three levels under these brackets: Economy, Standard and Premier. Each insurance level has different coverage and amounts, with Premier offering the highest protection.

In addition to these cover types, you can buy several optional extras, including:

  • Winter sports coverage includes protection for your ski gear, piste closures, and avalanches.
  • Golf cover includes extras such as golf equipment and green fees if you are unable to play.
  • Cruise cover includes potential reimbursement for a number of problems, such as missed port departures or cabin confinement
  • Gadget cover is another optional extra which means you can cover mobiles, e-readers, tablets or smartwatches if they’re lost, stolen or damaged in some way.

Always make sure to read the policy wording of any potential products you purchase to ensure that you will receive reimbursement for any claims you submit.

What medical conditions does Tesco Bank travel insurance cover?

Different insurers cover different pre-existing medical conditions . It’s imperative that you double-check what Tesco covers you for if you have one so that you insure yourself for any medical expenses that arise from unexpected medical treatment whilst on your trip.

Plus, it’s essential that you declare what pre-existing conditions you have. If you don’t, your cover may not be valid. You may also have to declare any test results that you are waiting for.

What are the benefits of Tesco Bank travel insurance?

Despite starting life in the grocery sector, there are many benefits, including:

Defaqto rating

The Standard and Premier cover for single and annual multi-trip policies have a 5-star Defaqto rating.

Kids under 18 go free

Going on holiday with kids (or grandkids) is not cheap. Travel insurance offers can sometimes take the sting out of some of the cost, with this one from Tesco being particularly appealing if you have a family. Up to four kids under 18 can go free on each single or annual multi-trip policy.

Levels of cover

Being able to pick the level of cover you need for the length of trip you require offers great peace of mind and means you are not overpaying or underinsuring yourself at any point. Plus, within those policies, you can choose between other levels of coverage to ensure you are not paying for clauses you don’t need in your policy.

Online doctor

On Tesco’s single trip and annual multi trip policies, if you choose Premier Cover, you can access an English-speaking GP on the phone or via your app. If you buy backpacker or later-life products or policies, you get access to the GP as standard.

Covid Cover

Covid might not be part of our daily lives anymore, but it could still impact your travel. Tesco's Covid coverage includes protection for trip cancellations or curtailments if you get Covid. It also means you can access medical treatment if you catch Covid whilst on holiday or have to fly home earlier than planned if your destination region goes into lockdown while you’re away.

However, Tesco does not offer coverage in cases where trip cancellation is advised by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) or your local authority due to all travel or non-essential travel restrictions.

Purchasing Tesco travel insurance policies

Tesco bank’s policies offer an array of choices, plus all-important optional extras such as gadgets and mobile phone cover, which mean you can get comprehensive cover for various risks or issues.

It’s essential to look at your requirements and see whether the final price means you get good value from Tesco’s travel insurance products. Given the breadth of Tesco’s policies, you’ll likely find a viable option for you.

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

Have had no communication from the claim people from the start even when putting all my information through at the time of the accident in 2022. Sent a huge claim form through with documents again after the hospital sent me a threatening letter regarding payment and again had to chase rock insurance on this sending multiple emails with no response. Whether the claim has been settled is still a guess work and I just wait for further correspondence from the Spanish hospital.

Tesco Bank launches Travel Insurance

23 March 2021

  • Travel added to Tesco Bank’s award-winning insurance range that includes Pet, Home and Car
  • Protection against Covid-19 related disruption as standard
  • Three levels of Defaqto-rated cover are available, as well as optional extras and add-ons
  • Tesco Clubcard points and a discount are available to Tesco Clubcard members

Tesco Bank has expanded its offering to customers with the launch of travel insurance.

Tesco Bank Travel Insurance will include Covid-19 cover as standard, to help protect customers who test positive and experience Covid-19 related disruption, either before or during their trip.

Three tiers of cover are available to suit a range of customer needs, offering different levels of protection for travel and belongings.  All policies come with core features that include cover for medical expenses, trip cancellation or delays, and lost or stolen baggage or money.

Customers can also tailor their policy with a range of helpful optional extras and add-ons, such as gadget protection and Winter Sports Cover.

Two specialist products are available aimed at backpacker travellers and customers aged over 80.

Policyholders will enjoy helpful rewards, including the ability for children under 16 to be covered for free on single and annual multi trip policies and the chance to save money on their travel insurance when they buy Tesco Travel Money first. Tesco Clubcard members who buy direct can save 5% and collect Clubcard points when they provide their Clubcard number.

Mark Airey, Tesco Bank’s Insurance Commercial Director, said:

“We’re proud to expand our award-winning insurance offering to Tesco shoppers with the addition of Tesco Bank Travel Insurance.

“We appreciate that the immediate outlook for travel remains uncertain, however the need for travel insurance is greater than ever – whether holidaying in the UK or abroad.  Offering Covid-19 protection as standard helps to give customers peace of mind they are protected should they test positive, and they have to cancel or cut short their trip.

“With a range of cover levels available to Tesco shoppers, we’re confident customers will find a policy that suits them and their holiday once travel at home and abroad is permitted.”

Tesco Bank has partnered with ROCK Insurance Group to manage the scheme, while ROCK has selected Axa Partners to provide underwriting, claims handling and medical assistance services.

Antony Martin, Managing Director at Rock Insurance Group said : “We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Tesco Bank to launch travel insurance to its customers. ROCK is providing Tesco Bank’s customers with a wide range of travel insurance products and services that are available online or via a dedicated call centre, meaning that more people will be protected and have the confidence to travel as soon as restrictions have eased.”

Paul Moloney, Sales Director at AXA Partners said : “We’re delighted to announce our new partnership with Tesco Bank to provide underwriting and other services for its new travel insurance proposition.

“It is our duty as insurers to safeguard customers’ trust; implementing solutions that provide assurance and protect what matters. We very much look forward to providing Tesco Bank customers with quality travel insurance cover both now, and when we are free of this pandemic.”

Tesco Holiday Insurance Price Comparison

Tesco holiday insurance types - economy, standard premier, tesco travel insurance vs admiral travel insurance, tesco travel insurance vs saga travel insurance, tesco travel insurance vs direct line travel insurance, tesco travel insurance phone number, tesco holiday insurance.

Tesco offers three levels of Annual and Single Trip travel insurance—Economy, Standard and Premier, which are underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance (par of the AXA group).

Trip cancellation is included on all policies, in addition to emergency medical expenses and travel delay.

The higher tiers include higher coverage limits and the top tier include access to a virtual doctor and end supplier failure, which can be a valuable feature.

Here are some key points:

  • 3 levels of cover (Economy, Standard and Premier)
  • Multi-trip cover for any number of trips up to 31 days each
  • Single-trip cover for trips up to 365 days
  • 10% Tesco Clubcard discount when you buy direct (enter your Clubcard number when you get your quote)
  • Top-tier Premier policy includes end supplier failure and access to a virtual doctor
  • Optional extras: winter sports, golf, gadgets, cruise and car hire excess insurance cover
  • Covid cover includes : if you have to cancel or cut short your trip as a result of contracting COVID-19; medical treatment if you contract COVID-19 abroad; if you’ve got to return home early because the region you’re in goes into lockdown.

Does Tesco Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under Tesco Annual Multi-Trip policies, so long as you pre-booked at least 2 consecutive nights of pre-booked accommodation or pre-booked transport at least 50 miles from home.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Tesco may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, for an added cost in most cases. If Tesco is not able to offer cover for your pre-existing conditions, then claims arising as a result of those existing conditions would not be covered. As part of the quote process you will be asked a number of questions about the health of you and your travelling companions.

Over 65s: The policy booklet states that the age limit for single and annual multi trip policies is 79 years old, with a max of 65 years for the winter sports add on. However, those 80 or older can call 0345 030 6127 to discuss a quote over the phone.

Tesco prices seem competitive relative to others in the market, considering the features. While their claims figures for 2021 left us with some questions, figures for 2022 look more promising. , has lower claims acceptance rates. The latest data from the Financial Conduct Authority shows that their underwriter, Inter Partner Assistance SA, accepted 70-75% of claims made on annual European policies in January to December 2022, just a touch below the industry average of 76.15%. In terms of worldwide policies, it accepted 80-85% of claims (much better than the 60-65% the previous year), just on target with the industry average of 81.56%.

Does Tesco Travel Insurance Cover Cruises?**

Cruise cover is available with Economy, Standard and Premier Tesco travel insurance policies as an optional add-on for an additional cost. Over 80s who buy Later Life travel insurance get cruise cover included as standard for no additional cost.

We gathered Tesco travel insurance quotes for a solo 30-year-old traveller, for single trip cover (2 week trip) and annual, multi-trip cover, across a range of geographical locations, and found prices starting from under £40 for a 2-week trip.

Oddly, we found that annual, multi-trip cover was in some cases cheaper than single trip cover, so if you think you can save money buying single trip cover be sure to check annual prices as well!

For example , single trip cover for a 2-week trip to France was quoted at £39.94, but an annual policy cover Europe was only £27.65, clearly the better deal there.

According to our research, prices of Tesco's provide good value according to the average cost of travel insurance .

Chart showing estimated costs for Tesco Bank travel insurance

Unsurprisingly, Tesco's Premier travel insurance is noticeably more expensive—Premier policies not only include higher levels of cover for baggage, trip cancellation, etc. but also include end supplier failure and virtual doctor access.

Not reflected in these prices is a 10% discount for Tesco Clubcard holders. You need your Tesco Clubcard membership number on hand when applying online to get the discount.

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to each individual's details, so please just use this data for general educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

You can learn more about average costs for these locations in our other research on UK travel insurance costs for Europe and America .

Cover for a family of 4 is basically 2X the cost of cover for a solo traveller, because kids go free!

Tesco offers three tiers of travel insurance—Economy, Standard and Premier.

Optional extras that you can add on to all three tiers include winter sports, golf, cruise, gadget and car hire excess insurance cover.

Tesco Single Trip travel insurance covers trips up to 365 days abroad. Tesco Annual Multi-Trip policies cover any number of trips a policy year, up to 31 days each. Those under age 65 can extend the maximum trip duration to 45 or 60 days for an extra charge. There is a 15-day maximum trip length for Winter Sports trips, if that option is purchased.

Tesco Economy

Economy is Tesco's entry-level travel insurance plan. Emergency Medical expenses and Travel Delay are included, plus you get £1,000 per person for Trip Cancellation.

However, there's no cover for end supplier failure, no cover for missed inbound departures, no access to a virtual doctor and lower limits for most coverage categories across the board.

The excess is £99 per person.

Tesco Standard

As Tesco's solid mid-tier offering, Standard policies have similar features to the Economy plan, but offer cover for missed inbound departures and higher limits across most coverage categories.

The excess is £75 per person.

Tesco Premier

Tesco Premier is the top-tier travel insurance plan with the highest levels of cover across nearly all categories. Additional cover includes end supplier failure and access to a virtual doctor.

Another perk is that there is no excess with Premier plans if you have a successful claim.

Tesco Travel Insurance Reviews

To better understand the value of Tesco travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance

Admiral travel insurance offers three tiers of travel insurance cover, all for very competitive prices and including Personal Belongings protection.

Those looking for cover for catastrophes (e.g., volcanic ash cloud and storms) should consider one of Admiral's top two tiers—Gold or Platinum.

If your plans include a cruise in the next year, then Admiral offers comprehensive Cruise cover for an added cost (included on Platinum), which includes Missed Port Departure, Cabin Confinement, Unused Excursions and Cruise Interruption. Insolvency is not covered on Admiral plans, however.

Bottom Line: If your travel plans include a cruise, then Admiral might provide more comprehensive travel insurance for you—but you can buy cruise cover as an add on with Tesco.

Saga Travel Insurance Review

Saga travel insurance if offered as one, simple travel insurance plan to those over 50 years of age—with no upper age limit.

We like that Saga includes cover for Catastrophe and a higher level of Personal Belongings/Baggage cover on all policies, plus Golf.

Another perk is that travellers whose international flight is delayed more than 2 hours can benefit from access to a LoungeKey airport lounge, as part of Trip Delay cover.

While travellers can be covered of any age, prices do rise steadily for older customers.

Bottom Line: If you are an older traveller, especially in your 70s or 80s, Saga may be a more viable travel insurance option for you, as they specialize in "mature" travellers.

Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line travel insurance plans include cover for End Supplier Failure and Natural Disasters, plus cover for the replacement cost of used points or miles in case of Cancellation/Curtailment for a trip bought with air miles or another rewards structure.

While prices are a bit higher than average, according to our analysis, you are getting these extra cover features.

One surprising extra is Baggage—you'll need to pay extra to cover your personal belongings as they're not included as standard—BUT once purchased, your mobile phone will be covered as part of Personal Belongings/Baggage.

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for your mobile phone when you travel, you can get cover through Direct Line's optional Baggage cover.

“home insurance renewal ”.

written by JulianNolan on 09/03/2024

Tesco home Insurance! part of Tesco Bank. Avoid them. My renewal quote this year had gone from £350 last year to £600 this year, no claims, no explanation. But they had also increased the excess needed to pay. No way to email them as they don't have an email. Do a comparison online and Tesco home insurance is £304 so they lost a customer, don't trust your renewal quote especially if it has doubled. Tesco are ripping you off. Used NFU far better speaking to a person over a coffee rather than a computer.

“NOT COVERED FOR PRE_BOOKED PLANS”

written by MSmithhh on 21/02/2024

YOU'RE NOT COVERED FOR ANYTHING BOOKED BEFORE YOU TRAVEL!!! I purchased the Premium Tesco Bank Backpacker Travel Insurance provided by AXA. You're not insured for anything you pre-book, only expenses incurred. So if anything goes wrong you won't get your money back on your travel or accommodation costs. Don't make the same mistake as I did. Go with someone else. I booked all my flights and accommodation before I went. Vietnam was flooded so I didn't fly there and had to make new plans. Because I booked this BEFORE, according to the policy I was not covered. They don't make this clear when purchasing, I guess because if people knew this they wouldn't purchase it.

“Superb customer service”

written by 125Watson on 27/09/2023

Spoke to an amazing member of staff at about 5 30 pm on Wednesday 27 September about my travel insurance I was trying to do online .there was a glitch in the process online. He did everything from the beginning for me and got my insurance sorted out. He was so polite and efficient, his help was very much appreciated. He is a 5 * communicator who resolved my questions in a very professional yet friendly manner. Excellent 5* customer service. Many thanks.

“No documentation despite requests”

written by Campbella177 on 13/09/2023

Having been a customer of Tesco Travel Insurance since 2021, my annual policy automatically renewed in July 2023. However no documentation was received confirming the policy was in existence. Given an overseas holiday in a few days, I contacted the administrators of the policy (Rock Insurance) to request copies of the insurance certificate required for travel. Despite several phone calls and emails over two days as well as several hours writing and waiting for telephone connection, no documentation arrived. Customer agents informed me 5 times they had sent the documentation via email but still nothing. During my latest call, despite telling the agent I was due to travel in a couple of days, I was brushed off with the remark that it can take 48 hours for a copy to arrive. 48hours for am email to arrive when I was told 5 times the email had been sent?! Given the lack of confidence and proximity of travel I have cancelled the policy and obtained a new one from a different company which took 10 minutes from start of application to receiving insurance certificate.

“DO NOT BOOK IF YOU WANT TO HIKE”

written by Celine050890 on 31/08/2023

We booked with Tesco the WORLDWIDE insurance policy thinking it would include most countries in South America where we were going, ie Bolivia, Peru, Chile etc. They have a very fine clause stating that they do not cover any walking above 2500m sea level. However most of the sites around Bolivia and Peru are above sea level therefore Tesco is not able to cover none of the Bolivia and Peruvian sites, so technically calling this insurance worldwide is not true and really misleading. Once we let them know we were outside of the cooling period and they did not want to refund us 100% but only 65%.

“Cancelled but never got money back”

written by Plasma99 on 14/08/2023

I took out a policy to cover my daughter's holiday in Greece. I realized that I had made a mistake and immediately called Tesco to cancel the policy. They confirmed that the policy had been cancelled and that I would receive a refund. The email said:- "I can confirm the policy has been cancelled, please allow 3-5 working days for the refund to be credited to your account." I have never received my money back despite frequent requests. I have always been impressed with Tesco and doubt that their team would normally behave like this. More likely to be the "rockinsurance" company that provided the cover. Tesco need to ensure this company is looking after its customers properly.

“Of no use in an emergency AVOID ”

written by Jack253 on 11/08/2023

The emergency number provided is a UK charged for number, so roaming charges are incurred. Keep a record. The initial contact was helpful but trying to follow up to confirm safe homeward travel arrangements was like getting blood out of a stone. One email provided flight details out of the UK rather than back to the UK. It is nigh on impossible to get hold of anyone beyond the call centre even in an emergency situation.

“Excellent Service”

written by sophieella444 on 28/07/2023

I had my phone pickpocketed in Barcelona and this was the first time I have ever had to make an insurance claim. I supplied them with all the documents and uploaded them PM on Tuesday - early Wednesday morning I recieved an email from them saying the claim was approved and would be settled in full. They then sent me a replacement phone which arrived on the friday! Was amazed at how easy and fast my claim was - would definitely reccommend Tesco insurance to anyone.

“Paid for policy. Got no documents. Rang contact...”

written by Dan2023 on 22/07/2023

Paid for policy. Got no documents. Rang contact number. Closed at weekend. Recorded message inaudible but said something about AXA. Tried contacting AXA they said contact Tesco. Tesco website says contact AXA Now having to take out another policy with a different provider. Avoid at all costs.

“Taken payment twice”

written by Jacqu on 08/06/2023

Don’t bother with Tesco insurance, go somewhere reputable . I shop at Tesco, get my fuel at Tesco, am a member of the Clubcard scheme so thought Tesco was a trustworthy and safe company to deal with. How wrong could I be! They took the payment for my annual travel policy out of my bank account twice (two days apart). They said to me over the phone that they were having issues with the site and I would get a refund. Now countless phone calls and emails later, repeatedly giving them our names and policy number etc and I still have not had a refund. I’m having to prove that the payment has come out twice via a screen shot of my bank account. Making out it’s my fault they took payment twice and that they still can’t identify even though I have provided the evidence. It seems like they’re just making excuses to avoid reimbursing me. This is the first time I’ve used tesco for anything other than food and fuel , I won’t be trusting them with anything else in the future. Their customer service is appalling. TESCO, KNOW YOUR LIMITS!

“Admin chaos - lot of hassle”

written by on 30/05/2023

I had an annual policy with Tesco last year and did not need to claim, so I cannot comment on that side of things. I recently received a message saying that my policy would be automatically renewed but I needed to update my credit card details by ringing a phone number, as the old card had expired. However, when I did so, the person I spoke to said they could not just update my card details and the only way to do this was to renew the policy. I went online to try to renew the policy but could see no way to do this and had to start all over again, applying for a new policy. I declared precisely the same medical conditions as last year but this time I was refused cover! Why??? Also, incidentally, the amounts I was quoted kept changing - ostensibly in my favour - although I hadn't provided any new information. I shan't be bothering Tesco Travel Insurance again. And incidentally, I couldn't changed the answer to the "Value for money" question below. "Fantastic" is not my choice. I think it was reasonable, however.

“Claimed and all was good”

written by Bahin on 11/02/2023

First time I've ever had to claim on my travel insurance. My sister broke her ankle 1st day skiing. Claimed as soon as I came back for medical, prescription, Ski pass, Ski lessons and Ski hire. I made sure that I sent in every piece of evidence that I had into them. They said they were busy and it may take 30 days to process. But it only took 22 days, got every penny I claimed for minus excess. Very happy with the process and would definitely use again.

“Policy cancellation refund”

written by HeidiDickinson on 02/02/2023

Had to cancel policy before it even started due to changes in holiday. Phoned Tesco insurance & explained the circumstances, they told that’s fine but I’d lose 35% of the money paid, fair enough as I’d used their time, was told I’d get a confirmation email & my refund. Waited a few days & id heard nothing at all, phoned them again & was told more or less the same thing, still no response from them after a few more days, finally sent a email, got a response saying I should receive my refund in 3 to 5 days, no refund at 5 days. Sent another email telling them how bad the service is, got 1 back saying my email will be sent to the complaints dept. Still no refund Please save yourself the hassle of dealing with these, imagine if you had to make a claim, you’ve no chance if they can’t sort a simple refund

“Very quick settlement”

written by on 04/09/2018

We had to cancel our holiday due to husband’s sudden unexpected illness. Sent off claim with medical report, cancellation invoice etc by email late Friday pm and received email early morning on following Tuesday to say claim settled in full. Excellent service, would recommend to anyone. Competitive pricing, have used Tesco several times before but never had to make a claim until now.

“Don't even consider it, avoid by all means”

written by dearmrlewis on 21/03/2017

I wish I would have taken another insurance policy. I took out a yearly travel insurance policy in January, and I had an accident in Moscow. I contacted the Tesco's medical assistance line and they were OK, just OK. After coming back home I was sent a claim form and I sent all the relevant documentation to support my claim (medical reports from overseas, invoices, etc). Their claims department seem to be of limited intelligence, they can't even write proper letters and they have been dealing with my claim for over two months now, and they even asked me for documents to prove that I am a UK resident. The must ludicrous thing was that they asked for my consent to access my medical records in the UK to "validate" my claim. They also said that they had sent their "agent" in Russia to validate my claim and I contacted the hospital to ask about it and they said that they no one had contacted them to ask them about the treatment I had. They are doing their utmost to deny cover and they just to add insult to injury they don't even have a dedicated complaints department. I was really disappointed, I am out of pocket now and now I thought that I could count on my so-called insurance. No wonder you never see adverts on TV for Tesco travel insurance. I will report them to the Financial Ombudsman, do not even consider taking out a policy with them, they are unprofessional, unreliable and thick.

“So glad I had Tesco Travel Insurance”

written by tyCormier111 on 09/05/2016

Had our backpack stolen in Barcelona with 5 passports, money, car key, laptop, camera, phone, electronics and other belongings. Emergency passports cost about 105 pounds each, car key 235 pounds, etc, so it was a lot of money. Was worried that some policies say they only cover passports and money if carried on your person or in locked accommodation or safe. Tesco paid for everything after applying policy excesses and limits, so it's the best we could wish for, and I'm glad we had used them. The claim handler was helpful and courteous and processed our claim within 1.5 week of receiving it.

“Excellent service”

written by on 18/04/2016

My son was taken ill and admitted to hospital on a family holiday to the USA. One brief phone call (3 minutes or so) was all that was required and the people on the emergency line sorted out everything with the hospital for us. Customer service was outstanding and it was all much easier than I expected. I was very impressed and will definitely buy travel insurance from Tesco bank again.

“Dont be fooled”

written by posie2006 on 16/01/2016

Wanted a quote for my son who is going away with college. It says you get 20% off with your club card so i thought id do 2 separate quotes, one with my club card and one without. I got a quote of £13.99 with my card and then a quote of £14.49 without it....now im not a genius here but im sure that's not a 20% difference that Tesco states that you get. To me they are selling the insurance with false information trying to reel people in with the 20% off.... DON'T BE FOOLED PEOPLE!!

Cancelled my dads insurance with me as a named driver because when my dad brought the car the lady whom we brought it from wanted a bank transfer. My dad don’t do online banking or stuff like that he can barley work a phone. So I paid for the car with my online banking. We then went with Tesco for our insurance, after they took our £286 deposit a week later they asked for proof of purchase for the car, so I sent them the bank statement, they then called to say they are cancelling the policy because the payment made to buy the car came from your daughters account. Oh and then to say you’ll only get a partial refund of £119. Absolute joke of a company cancelling an insurance policy because the policy holders daughter paid the money for the car! Tesco insurance, you make me laugh.

Great service issue resolved.

Easy to answer

Your operater was great, cutting off my ability to use the card without a warning wasn't.

Your telephone staff was very understanding and recognised that I have never before missed a payment and also recognised that I had paid the outstanding amount in full. She was very helpful. Then I found that when I tried to use my card it was denied. Wasn't warned that this would happen. Am now without the card I rely on until Thursday for accidentally forgetting to pay the amount outstanding. But, I repeat, your staff member was very understanding.
