Complete Guide to Visiting the Kutch Region of Gujarat, India

The Kutch region of Gujarat is sometimes described as India's "wild west." This immense stretch of largely barren and harsh desert landscape apparently spans more than 40,000 square kilometers, and is one of the country's largest districts. Its name, Kutch (or Kachchh), refers to the fact that it alternates between wet (submerged during the monsoon season) and dry.

Much of Kutch consists of seasonal wetlands known as the Great Rann of Kutch (famous for its salt desert) and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ). The Great Rann, located in the far north, borders Pakistan and occupies a part of the Thar desert which also extends into Rajasthan. Hence, Kutch is comprised of many migrant communities from not only Pakistan (Sindh) and the Marwar region of Rajasthan but also further afield, including Persia (Iran). Kutch was ruled by the Jadeja dynasty of Rajputs, one of the oldest Hindu dynasties, for hundreds of years until India became a republic.

Overview of Gujarat's Kutch Region

Such mixed migration led to the establishment of many different religions in the Kutch region. Today, Jainism is the most prominent one. However, what's interesting to note is that Kutch remains surprisingly harmonious, with its inhabitants coexisting peacefully, respecting each other's beliefs, and often even participating in each other's events.

The Impact of Earthquake

When migrants came to Kutch centuries years ago, the Indus River flowed through the region, making the land fertile for farming and livestock. A tremendous earthquake in 1819 altered its course though (and the region was again hit by a devastating earthquake in 2001). Now, much of the land is flat and inhospitable, filled with captivating nothingness!

Many villagers earn an income from arts that have been passed down from generation to generation, making this one of the main attractions for tourists. Yet, it's the simplicity and quietness of life there that's really striking and meaningful. Kutch is an amazing place to visit remote villages, learn from them, and get another perspective on life. It's inspiring and humbling.

All of this makes Kutch one of the top rural tourism destinations in India . You could easily spend a week or more exploring it, but you should at least allow four days.

Bhuj: Capital of the Kutch Region

Bhuj, the capital city of Kutch, is an excellent launching point for exploring the region. It's readily accessible by train (most conveniently from Mumbai , 15 hours), bus, and flights.

The City's Royal Heritage

The city was ruled for hundreds of years by Jadeja dynasty kings, who established themselves there in the 16th century. It spreads out around a hill called Bhujia Dungar (which Bhuj is named after). Atop the hill sits Bhujia Fort, constructed by king Rao Godaji to protect the city from intruders. Six major battles took place after it was built, most of them during 1700 –1800 AD and involving Muslim raiders from Sindh and the Mughal rulers of Gujarat.

Attractions in Bhuj

Sadly, much of Bhuj was destroyed by the earthquake in 2001. However, many of the architectural treasures of the city's Jadeja rulers remain standing in the walled Old City. These include Rani Mahal (the former royal residence), the Italian Gothic and European styled Prag Mahal (with its durbar hall and clock tower), and Aina Mahal (an ornate 350-year-old palace containing royal paintings, furniture, textiles, and weapons).

Other attractions in Bhuj include its many temples (the new Swaminarayan temple is a magnificent gleaming white marble masterpiece), museums, markets and bazaars, and Hamirsar Lake (which is home to huge catfish). If you're into handicrafts, Kutch Adventures India can take you to meet some expert artisans in Bhuj. One of them, Aminaben Khatri, is an award-winning bhandani (tie-dye) artist who conducts classes and has a workshop in her home.

In addition, the Living and Learning Design Center near Bhuj is a remarkably curated museum that offers incredible insight into the lives and artisanship of the women from communities in the Kutch region. It's a must-visit for anyone who's interested in textiles and culture.

Staying in Bhuj

Want to experience the local way of life? Kutch Adventures India provides comfortable homestay accommodations in Bhuj . Owner Kuldip is a renowned responsible travel guide, and you'll be welcomed into his family home. It's even possible to get cooking lessons from his mother.

The Bhuj House is an award-winning heritage homestay with four guest rooms. It was built in 1894 and has been beautifully restored and decorated with antiques and local handicrafts. Rates start from 5,100 rupees per night for a double.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer more facilities, the Regenta Resort Bhuj is popular. It's located on a hilltop overlooking the city.

Otherwise, there's a range of inexpensive hotels on Station Road in the city center. The Royal Guesthouse behind the bus station is ideal for budget travelers and has dorm rooms.

The new Kutch Wilderness Kamp is and eco-resort that's scenically situated overlooking Rudramata Lake, about 20 minutes from Bhuj.

What's Next After Bhuj

After spending a day or so exploring Bhuj, visitors usually head off to surrounding handicraft villages and to the Great Rann of Kutch salt desert.

The port of Mandvi, famous for shipbuilding, is also only an hour's drive away from Bhuj. On the way there, you can stop at historic Kera to visit the ruins of a 10th century Shiva temple. It was badly damaged by the 1819 earthquake in Kutch. These days, it's occupied by bats but you can still go inside. Apparently, it's particularly evocative on full moon nights, when it's flooded with moonlight from a gap in the roof.

Mandvi: Seaside Ship Building

The port town of Mandvi, on the west coast of Kutch around an hour from Bhuj, is worth visiting to see its fascinating 400 year old shipbuilding yard. The building takes place along the banks of the Rukmavati River in town, near where the river merges into the Arabian Sea. There you'll be able to see ships in various stages of construction.

The Ship Building Process

Each ship takes two to three years to complete, and the construction requires different specialist knowledge at each stage. Many of the workers are ex-sailors. The wood that's used comes from Burma or Malaysia. When the ships are finished, they're towed by small boat to the Gulf where diesel engines are installed in them.

What's particularly interesting is how seepage is prevented from entering the boats from the small gaps around the nails in the wood. Cotton wool is stuffed into the gaps and it expands when wet to fill the holes!

Other Attractions in Mandvi

Mandvi wasn't hit by the 2001 earthquake as badly as Bhuj, so many of its atmospheric old buildings are still intact. They can be seen on a walk through the narrow lanes around the market area, and with a bit of imagination you'll be transported back to the bygone era when Mandvi was the summer retreat of the King of Kutch. The faded Vijay Vilas Palace, by the beach on the outskirts of Mandvi, was the royal summer abode and can be explored too.

If you're feeling hungry and want to try one of the unlimited Gujarati thalis (eat as much as you can platters) that the state is famous for, the best place to do so is Osho restaurant (formally called Zorba the Buddha). You'll be able to stuff yourself full for only about 150 rupees ($2)!

Don't Miss the Jain Temple

Not far before Mandvi, in Koday, there's an awe-inspiring white marble Jain temple that oozes calm and serenity. It has an astonishing 72 shrines housing Jain gods. And, most remarkable of all, the temple is a relatively new one and it's possible to meet the man responsible for carving it and hear his stories. (Contact Kutch Adventures India to make arrangements).

The drive to Mandvi from Bhuj is interesting, as the parched land transforms into greenery and palm trees. It almost looks like south India!

Kutch Villages and Handicrafts

Gujarat's Kutch region is renowned for its handicrafts, produced by the very talented artisans in its villages. Many of the famous arts, such as bandhani tie die and ajrakh block printing, originate from Pakistan. Migrants brought these arts with them when they came to Kutch more than 350 years ago. The Muslim Khatri community specializes in both these arts. In addition, arts such as embroidery, weaving, pottery, lacquer work, leather work, mud and mirror work, and rogan art (a type of painting on fabric) are prevalent in the region.

Take a Handicraft Tour

Kutch is one of the top places for handicraft tours in India . It's possible to drop into the villages and visit the artisans independently. However, most of them don't speak English and the villages are scattered all over the area, often making them difficult to find.

Kutch Adventures India runs bespoke tours to see some of the lesser known but equally talented artists in the region, to uplift them and help them get recognition. Prior to starting his tour business, owner Kuldip worked at a local NGO and is intimately acquainted with many villages in the region. Most importantly, he's warmly welcomed into them.

Popular Handicraft Villages in Kutch

Bhujodi (a village of weavers, about 10 kilometers east Bhuj) and Ajrakhpur (a village of block printers, 15 kilometers east of Bhuj) are the most frequented villages. Nirona, around 50 kilometers northeast of Bhuj, can be visited as a short detour on the way to the Great Rann of Kutch and is home to bell makers, rogan art, and lacquer work artists. Also on the way to the Great Rann, block printing and pottery is done in Khavda village. And, not far away, Gandhinugam village (populated by the Meghwal community) features colorfully painted traditional mud huts. It's situated at Ludiya.

Craft Parks and Resource Centers

Hiralaxmi Memorial Craft Park in Bhujodi is a government-sponsored cultural center and artisans market. It's made up of a series of huts where artisans are allowed to exhibit and sell their handicrafts for a month at a time on a rotational basis. It's an irresistible place for shopping!

Khamir is a space that houses local artisans, and provides them with a platform to sell their handicrafts and interact with visitors. It also has a guesthouse for visitors who are participating in workshops and events. Handicraft-lovers are encouraged to gather there to exchange ideas and learn. It's located in Kukma, 15 kilometers east of Bhuj, not far passed Bhujodi.

The Rare Skill of Mashru Weaving

At Bhujodi, you'll find an expert mashru weaver by the name of Babu Bhai and his sweet family. Babu is one of the last three remaining mashru weavers in the Kutch region. Mashru weaving is a complex type of weaving, using both silk and cotton. The inside of the woven cloth is cotton, while the outside is silk. Apparently it originates from Persia, where Muslim communities believed that silk should not touch a person's skin.

Babu Bhai spends a great deal of time training his wife and children his craft. For him, weaving is like a form of meditation, as it requires a lot of focus and is accompanied by the repetitive clacking noise of the weaving machine. In testament to the rarity of his work, Babu Bhai is the only artist to have a permanent hut at the Hiralaxmi Memorial Craft Park.

Great Rann of Kutch and Salt Desert

Apart from handicrafts, most people who visit Kutch do so to see the Great Rann of Kutch—an arid expanse that lies to the north of the Tropic of Cancer. Much of it is made of up of salt desert, covering around 10,000 square kilometers and stretching close to the Pakistan border. It's particularly eerie and magical at sunset, and especially under the stars on a full moon night. Making it even more astonishing, the salt is submerged underwater during the main monsoon season in India.

The Great Rann is inhabited by various village communities, many who have migrated from Pakistan (including many Muslim Sindhis) and the Marwar region of western Rajasthan. It remained largely cut off and unexplored until after the 2001 earthquake, when the government raised awareness about it and its resources. Traditions have been sustained due to the local production of handicrafts, including embroidery and block printing.

Visiting the Great Rann of Kutch

A breathtaking panoramic view of the Great Rann of Kutch can be had from atop Kala Dungar—the black mountain. The Rann's wetlands, known as Chari Fulay, also attract numerous migratory birds.

Plan your trip with this Great Rann of Kutch Travel Guide . Most visitors stay in special accommodations near the salt desert. However, if you're feeling adventurous, Kutch Adventures India will take you to sleep out in one of the surrounding villages.

Little Rann of Kutch

The barren desolate landscape of the Little Rann of Kutch lies to the southeast of the Great Rann. The entrance is best approached from Ahmedabad, 130 kilometers away, rather than Bhuj.

The Little Rann is most famous for its the largest wildlife sanctuary in India. It is home to the Indian wild ass—an endangered creature that looks like a cross between a donkey and a horse. There are plenty of birds in the area as well.

Ultimate Kutch Travel Guide: Gujarat tourism hotspot

As a Gujarati, I’ll never fully express my admiration for deserts. Kutch tourism has been on the list of every traveler lately due to the white desert and Gujarat Tourism campaigns. Here goes the Kutch Travel Guide .

To those people who think that Kutch has been simply blown out of proportion by Amitabh Bachan and his “Kuchh din toh Guzaro Gujarat mein”(spend some days in Gujarat) advertisements – this blog’s written specifically for you.

Kutch travel guide – it’s best in winters, from September to February. November to February there’s the “ Rann Utsav(Desert Festival) ” and it attracts tourists from all over the world.

Table of Contents

1. Kutch Travel Guide – Bhuj

Aaina Mahal

This is the capital city of the Kutchh district. It’s accessible by air at the Bhuj Domestic airport. Bhuj’s a very interesting place. There’s a “City Palace” with “Aaina Mahal(mirror palace)” in the Darbargarh area of the city. Just hire a rickshaw and within 4 hours you would have been across the city.

My favorite part of Bhuj is the handicraft market. I love silver jewelry and the traditional Kutchhi cotton kurtas with ajrakh print. Trust me when I say this, they don’t sell such Kurtas anywhere.

Also, to someone into terracotta art and Handicrafts then expect a wonderful variety like never seen before. Bhujodi’s a small village made on the outskirts of Bhuj for visitors, begin your shopping spree from here.

Say you happen to have some more time on your hand then consider visiting Khavda for Ajrakh clothing and Nirona for pottery and kitchenware. These villages are within a 30km radius of Bhuj – take a bus or just hire a taxi.

Swaminarayan temple and Kutchi Dabeli

We also visit the Swaminarayan temple in Bhuj every single time. It’s a huge beautiful white temple. Also, do try out Kathiyawadi restaurants and Dabeli. One simply can’t go around Kutch without the super spicy “Kutchi Daabeli”. My roommate, who’s a Kutchi, gets me a Dabeli every single time she comes from vacation.

In fact, we have a special Dabeli masala in the room all the time. Eat it with chapati and rice and everything is not tasty.

2. Dhordo/ White Desert/ Safed Rann

The most exciting and talked about part of the Kutch travel guide : I have a friend who’s performing in the Rann Utsav this year. Folk dance and the ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are the chief guests.

White rann,kutch travel guide

Rann Utsav started as a three days saga in 2005. Initially, it was meant to revive the culture of Kutch instead of the Bhuj earthquake that destroyed the economy and lives of the people of the district. I remember my Mumma often recalls how the earthquake was terrible and the tremors were felt all the way to Delhi, 1000kms away.

We incurred some heavy losses as well and times were tough, but people grow out of everything. That’s the beauty associated with Rann Utsav.

Flamingoes

Spend an entire day in the desert and with luck, there’s a good chance to see some Siberian cranes and flamingoes on migration. I personally suggest having your lunch in Bhuj and then leaving for the desert. You’ll be there in an hour and a half. The sunset’s a delight to watch. Then begins the night stage festivities. Dances, Folk songs, and people in full festive delight.

Navratri(Gujarati dance festival) and Makar Sankranti(kite flying festival) are also celebrated here.

Accommodation in Dhordo

To spend a night in the desert – book yourself a cottage online, but the bookings often go up to 3 years of waiting, and I am not kidding.

Click ‘See all deals’ to see the number of places to book a cottage below

This is the part where it gets really expensive. But the experience again is worth it. Camel riding, desert biking, hot air ballooning are some other highlights.

Do you know that the desert’s white because of the salt content in the sand? In fact, half of the desert’s submerged under seawater during monsoons. The water washes away in winters and the salt planes remain. It’s like a snowy experience without the snow :)

3. Mandvi Beach

This is a spot for exclusive bird watching. Your typical beach experience with coconut water, camel ride, ferries, jet skies, dabeli, Kulfi, and sunset. The perfect evening spot!

Other places with beaches to check out:

  • Visiting Nuvasa Bay Beach in Batam!
  • Perfect Bali Travel Blog

4. Kaalo Dungar(Black Hill)

It’s a black hill. Literally. It’s right in the middle of the white desert and a strategic point for India. Pakistan border’s visible from here and one needs a military permit to visit the hill. The perfect trekking experience with a view so precious that it’s the hotspot for college students and high school kids.

5. Mata Nu Madh

kutch tour guide reviews

It’s a temple with a history of fulfilled wishes.  It’s a two-hour drive from Bhuj. The deity is sacred to the Jadeja rulers of Kutchh and is revered by all people.

So, that’s the highlight in a 100kms radius of Bhuj. Stay at a hotel in Central Bhuj and with 3 days is more than enough to go around.  I recommend getting a stay in central Bhuj and hiring a motorcycle or a car and traveling around at your own pace. Also, booking a taxi is an option.

Check out accommodations in Bhuj on Booking.com:

Say you happen to have more time on your hand and wish to expand the radius then I recommend visiting the “Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary” and  “Pirotan Islands in the Arabian Sea” for the wild experience. However, you’ll have to shift your base to Jamnagar in that case.

That would end the Kutch travel guide . Kutch is a very unlikely “touristy” place in the sense that the visitor inflow hasn’t been a historical occurrence. Recently, people have added Kutchh to their bucket list. The best part is, this doesn’t seem to die out any time soon with the ever-growing number of people flocking the Rann every year during November-March. And, I’m just so proud to boast about it!

I’ve been to Kutch thrice. Once with my parents, then with my grandparents and finally with my school friends. And I’ve had a different experience every single time! So, wishing you the best time traveling around my state!

"The White Desert of India"

Kutch tourism.

Virtually an island that resembles the shape of a tortoise, Kutch is an erstwhile princely state of India holding onto its grandeur nature from the past. Kutch is probably one of the most beautiful, yet surreal places in India with the vast expanses of the white salt desert.  The place comes to life during the winters when the Rann Festival is held during December-February everywhere in which there are huge camp settlements with cultural programs, functions and adventure activities like hot-air ballooning.

Kutch is also among the largest district of India with a terribly low population density. Also, Kutch lies on the India-Pakistan border and you can see parts of Pakistan from Kutch. Kutch is also famous for crafts and embroidery works, Flamingo Sanctuary and Wild Ass Sanctuary. Bhuj is an ideal starting point to visit the Rann of Kutch. Beautiful beaches of Mandvi near Bhuj are also totally worth visiting during your trip to Kutch. Don't miss to see the ancient town of Dholavira .

Great Rann of Kutch: Essential Travel Guide

  • January 6, 2021
  • Updated on November 29, 2023

India is a vast country covering a total area of around 3.28 million square km. The diversity in history, culture, landscapes, architecture, and cuisines is mind-boggling.  There is so much to see and experience that it may take years to explore the hidden gems. When you have places like the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan , Kashmir , Kerala , Delhi, Goa , and Uttarakhand to visit, it is not surprising that a small region near the western border of India is mostly overlooked by travelers. But thanks to a successful campaign to promote tourism by the Gujarat government with the charismatic Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador, places like Gir National Park and Great Rann of Kutch are slowly finding a place on the tourist map of India.

What is the Rann of Kutch?

Rann means barren land. The Rann of Kutch is a geographical marvel located in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Kutch was a part of the Arabian Sea, but a massive earthquake in 1809 separated it from the sea. The exposed sea bed was transformed into a vast barren land that remains dry with white salt and sand during summer/winter and looks like a massive sea during the rainy season. The extensive mudflat and salt clay of the marsh, which now lies about 15 meters above sea level, gets submerged by the high tides rising from the Arabian Sea in May-June.

During monsoons, the Rann of Kutch also gets flooded with water from neighboring rivers like Luni, Sindh, Bhuki, Rupen, etc. As the monsoon ends, the seawater slowly evaporates and recedes from the shallow wetland, leaving behind an enormous stretch of crunchy snowy white salt.

Great Rann of Kutch

Why should you visit the Great Rann of Kutch?

The largest known salt desert in the world, the Great Rann of Kutch provides a surreal and unique spectacle that you might not see anywhere else in the world. Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia offers a similar experience. But, Salar de Uyuni is not a salt marsh, it is a salt flat that was formed due to the transformation of lakes in prehistoric times.

Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh, that remains underwater during the monsoon season but is visible for the rest of the year. As you stand on the salt-tinted land, the vast expense of white marshland will leave you mesmerized. The emptiness for miles can be scary and the only thing one can see is the white snowy land melting into the distant horizon. Sunrises and sunsets are flamboyant as the changing hues of the sun are gloriously reflected on the white snowy marsh.

If this natural grandiosity is not enough, there are lots to keep you occupied. You can shop for gorgeous authentic handicrafts that can be found everywhere in the area – the Tent City, small villages, fairs, etc. Bedcovers, cushions, quilts, stoles, jackets, and skirts all adorned with exquisite embroidery and applique work are a must-buy. Then there are Bandini sarees, Ghagra-cholis, Juttis, lacquer curios, trinkets, silver ornaments, puppets, and other traditional stuff that you can pick as souvenirs .  During the Rann Utsav, there are cultural and musical performances every day by local artisans. You can enjoy plays, puppet shows, magic shows, folk music, and local dances.

Location of Great Rann of Kutch?

Rann of Kutch is located mostly in the state of Gujarat (India), but some parts spill into the province of Sindh (Pakistan). It lies in the Thar Desert in Kutch, a district situated in the North-West of Gujarat. The best way to reach the salt marsh is from Bhuj, which is around 85 km from Dhordo – a small town that the government has developed as the Gateway to the Great Rann of Kutch.

How to reach the Great Rann Of Kutch?

The Great Rann of Kutch is situated on the Western border of India, and is not easily accessible from most parts of the country – this is one of the main reasons why the Rann of Kutch is not so popular amongst travelers. Reaching the Great Rann should not be a problem if you are in Gujarat. Outside of Gujarat, Mumbai is the best place to start your journey to the Great Rann of Kutch. As mentioned before, you must reach Bhuj first and then plan your onward journey. Resorts in the area normally arrange transport from Bhuj.

By Road – Bhuj is 335 km from Ahmedabad and it would take you 7 hours to reach Bhuj. Standard and Luxury buses are available for Bhuj from major towns and cities in Gujarat and the roads are in good condition.

By Train – Kutch’s rail hubs are Bhuj and Gandhidham, which are well-connected to major cities. A train from Mumbai-Bhuj takes around 15 hours. It takes 21 hours to reach Bhuj from Delhi by train.

By Air – Bhuj has a domestic airport. There are non-stop regular flights from Mumbai to Bhuj that take two hours.

Best Time to visit Rann of Kutch?

The best time to visit Rann of Kutch is from November to February when The Rann Utsav organized by the Gujarat government takes place. During these winter months, days are pleasant but it can get freezing cold at night, especially in December and January . March also sees a few tourists, but by the end of March all accommodations, eateries, and basic facilities close down. Summer(April-May) is scorching hot, and the temperatures can touch 50°, making it impossible to explore the region. The Rann of Kutch is parched for most of the year, but there is rainfall between June to September. The Rann begins to dry up in October, transforming the Great Rann into a wide ocean of salt.

The full moon is the most coveted time to visit the Rann of Kutch as miles and miles of salty marshes sparkle like precious gems under the moonlit sky. The White Rann glows steely blue reflecting the bright moonlight. The Great Rann comes alive with local artists performing folk dance and songs in the white saline desert.

Great Rann of Kutch

Where to stay in Rann of Kutch?

Staying in Dhordo is the most convenient option to see the Great Rann of Kutch. If you are visiting the region during the Rann Utsav, you can camp at The Tent City – the complex built closest to the entrance of the Rann. T he Te nt City provides you with luxurious and spacious tents with all the amenities required for a comfortable stay. Another option is White Rann Resort where you can lodge in tents as well as the mud Bhungas (huts). These two packages offered by Gujarat Tourism are all-inclusive and you don’t have to worry about anything. They also organized a permit to visit the Great Rann. They are expensive but well worth the cost.

If you are looking for cheaper alternatives, you can stay in one of the many resorts and homestays that have sprouted in Dhordo in recent years due to the increasing popularity of the Rann Festival. Some of the available options include Gateway to Rann Resort, Bhuj House, Rann Village Resort, Praveg Resort, Rann Resort, Dholavira Rann Resort, and Kutir Craft Village Resort.

How to Get a Permit?

Due to its proximity to the Pakistan border, you require a permit from the Border Security Force (BSF) to visit the Great Rann of Kutch. The permit can be acquired at the Bhirandiyara check post, located around 20 km before Dhordo. Indian tourists can also apply online for the permit. You just need ID proof for validation. The check post opens at 11 am and closes at 5:30 pm

What is Rann Utsav?

Gujarat Tourism holds a Rann Utsav(festival) every year from November to February. The Rann Utsav is a vivid and colorful festival showcasing the best of Kutch culture, handicrafts, cuisine, and heritage. Around 350 luxurious tents are set up in Dhordo in a large complex spread across an area of 5,00,000 sq. meters. Around 35,000 visitors stay at Tent City every year. The sprawling complex is abuzz with folk performances, vibrant shopping options, festive fervor, and multiple adventure activities. You can opt for a 1-2-3-night all-inclusive package. The package price includes pick-up/drop from Bhuj, food, stay, sightseeing trips, and adventure activities.

If you are looking for other places to visit during your visit, there are a few interesting places nearby. Mandvi Beach, Dholavira, Narayan Sarovar, and Kalo Dungar (which offer panoramic views of the entire region), are a few of the places that can be visited if you have the time. Camel rides, camel-cart rides, ziplining, paramotoring, ATV rides, archery, rock climbing, meditation, yoga, and spa are some of the activities offered during the Rann Utsav. Beautiful place and you described it very well. Awesome blog..

Hi , this was a very informative post. I was looking at doing Bhuj and surrounding areas in 2 days in mid March (around full moon) Is it feasible to do this (we don’t mind long days) : Day 0- 1.Ahmedabad – Bhuj (over night bus), arriving early morning at Bhuj. Day 1 -2.Take an auto (?) from Bhuj for the whole day and cover the following: 1.Take permit 2.Visit village Hodka /Ludiya / Gandhi nu Gaam for crafts 3.Proceed to Kalo Dongra for sunset 4.Proceed to Dhordo for some photography for moonlight on White dessert 5.Return back to Bhuj & stay the night

Day2 : 1.Lakhpat fort 2.Narayan Sarovar / Chari Dhand 3.Come back to Bhuj (4pm possible?) 4.Overnight Take bus from Bhuj to Somnath or should we look at staying somewhere close to Dhordo and do the sunrise and then head to Lakhpat to see the fort on Day 2

Day 3: 1.Take local bus from Somnath to Gir by lunch 2.Do 4-7 pm safari at Gir

Would you be able to advise whether day 1 & 2 are doable?

Thanks for checking the post. For traveling, you have to take a taxi or hire a car. Not possible to do in an auto. The first day is definitely possible. However, I would recommend that you visit Dhordo during sunset also. The visuals and aesthetics there are much better than the one at Kala Dongra, so if you have to choose one, opt for sunset at Dhordo. The second day, I wouldn’t recommend it. Traveling alone would take 6-7 hours and then sighseeung. You won’t be able to come back by 4 pm. Though I haven’t covered that route so not the best judge.

About Kutch Tourism

Tourism in Kutch brings the visitors close to its surreal beauty and shows them all the best reasons to get enticed with the vast stretches of white salt spread over the shores of Rann of Kutch . The Kutch travel guide advises tourists to visit between December–February, during which Kutch celebrates the most popular Rann Festival in which the complete grandeur of the beach is decorated meticulously with numerous cultural festivals and adventure activities. Tourism in Kutch district supplements the visitors with the glimpses of our neighboring country Pakistan and the Indo-Pakistan border.

History of Kutch

The region of Kutch still encompasses many numerous sites that belong to the popular Indus Valley civilization. Controlled by Menaders and Indo-Scythians, later it got ruled by the Maurya Empire. Being influenced by the Western Satraps in the first century, the region came under the control of many empires. Eventually, as it also came under the British Raj in 1819, it became a state after the independence of India under the Union of India in 1950.

Culture of Kutch

Famed for its traditional and cultural heritage, here locals can be found to be engaged in some or other creative art form. The folk music, dance and art attract thousands of visitors to this place. Prolific in embroidery work, the locals of Kutch create beautiful garments densed with motifs. The staple food of the region is bajra, kadhi, khichdi and milk.

Best of Kutch

Sprawling over an area of more than 45000 sq km, the Great Rann of Kutch is one of the largest districts in India. Replete with splendid mud architecture, exquisite handicrafts, and spellbinding apparels, this region is defined by its creative artwork.

Let’s explore all the major tourist places in Kutch through our detailed Kutch travel guide:

Rann of Kutch Festival

Being one of the most amazing festivals of Kutch, Rann Utsav is a portrayal of the ethnic beauty of its rural area. Located at a distance of about 85 kms from Bhuj, this place attracts thousands of tourists every year. Besides guest accommodation, this place also encompasses a club house, a conference hall, a cafe, and a rejuvenation centre that make it even more attractive. Come here to witness some entertaining shows and performances, and to buy creative handicrafts that are worth of taking back home along.

Kutch Museum

If one wants to dig into the history and culture of this region, then Kutch Museum comes as the best recommendation for them. Nestled in the heart of the city, it was established in the year of 1877. Here, one can witness the largest collection of Kutch’s local currency and Kshatrapa inscriptions along with Kutchi script. Apart from that one can also get acquainted with the tribal culture, and enjoy the exhibition of paintings, sculptures, metal work and much more that used to prevail in the region of Kutch.

Tourism in Kutch begins from Bhuj which marks the beginning of the Rann of Kutch and draws specific attention to the Mandvi beach located here. One of the best places to visit in Kutch, the Narayan Sarovar located in Bhuj has earned huge popularity owing to its intermixing of 5 pious lakes namely Man Sarovar, Pampa Sarovar, Bindu Sarovar, Pushkar Sarovar and Narayan Sarovar. The breathtakingly beautiful sight of Hamirsar Lake included in the Kutch tour guide can be enjoyed with a walk around its border.

Kutch tourism never misses out on the beauty of Kandla Port and Mundra Port, the joint conjecture of which is mainly visited for the rare sightings of various species of birds. For historical references book a day for the Anjar town and Gandhidham which is the capital of Kutch.

Tourism in Gujarat offers the list of authentic dishes too. Owing to the overwhelming influence of Jainism and Buddhism, the food here has the tastiest shade of vegetarian delicacies. Kutch has its own traditional delicacy of Bajra-na-Rotla which is accompanied by Lassi, Buttermilk or Chhas. The place breathes within the essence of Gujarati thali, chakri, dhokla, papar, Kachumber, fafda, sev, Khandvi, and Khaman.

Kutch (Kachchh) Tourism And Travel Guide

Kutch is one of the prominent tourist attractions in Gujarat . It becomes a central point of visit for many visitors especially during the Rann Mahotsav where millions of people visit Kutch to experience the elegance, colors, tradition, and cultural essence of typical Gujarat. Kutch is the largest district in Gujarat with an area spreading over 45000 square km  and a population of over 2 million. The city has its own cultural importance which leaves its visitors speechless during their visit. To know more about tourism in Kutch, read the travel guide below.

How to Reach

How to Reach: Kutch (Kachchh) Tourism And Travel Guide

In spite of being one of the most visited places in Gujarat , Kutch doesn’t have a dedicated airport or a railway station of its own. Let us quickly walk you through the options available to reach the city of the white sand.

As said above, Kutch doesn’t have a dedicated railway station in the city because the majority of the land is covered with white sand and salt desert. However, Bhuj is the closest railway station that can help you reach this city. You can then book a private cab from Bhuj to Kutch. Several trains can drop you directly to Bhuj from Mumbai , Delhi , and other major cities of Gujarat.

Again, the city doesn’t have an airport. The closest airport is in Bhuj which is just about a distance of 59 km from Kutch. There are direct flights available from Mumbai and other cities at regular intervals. Once you get down at the Bhuj airport, a private cab can be booked to reach the city of Kutch.

Kutch is well connected with the road network. The roads are good and can help you reach quickly from nearby cities. Visitors generally prefer driving to Kutch as it gives them enough flexibility with timings and convenience. Private and government managed buses are also available which can be booked online.

Getting Around:

You can either take city buses to get around the region locally or an auto-rickshaw can be hired easily to get to some key tourist spots. The best way to get around the city is through a private cab. With a minimum charge of INR 800 for a day, you can easily spend the entire day at amazing places in Kutch without worrying about transportation.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Weather and Best Time to Visit: Kutch (Kachchh) Tourism And Travel Guide

The state of Gujarat is predominantly a hot region and experiences some of the extreme climatic conditions. Kutch is a district in Gujarat and is no different from other regions of Gujarat. It experiences all three major seasons and the weather conditions differ from season to season.

Summer (May to June):

Summer is the toughest time for visitors and local people as the temperature in its extreme conditions sores up to 48°C. Therefore, this is not recommended time for visiting Kutch.

Monsoon (July - October):

The south-west monsoon brings relief to the region, and as it progresses, brings the temperature down to an average max of 32°C from 48°C. By the end of September and the start of October, it becomes quite pleasant and a lot of visitors start to show up during this time.

Winter (November - February):

Winter is the best time to visit Kutch as the climate becomes the most pleasant. The Rann Mohatsav takes the central point of attraction during this time and the number of visitors increases exponentially between November and January. The temperature can sometimes drop down to 2°C, however the days are very pleasant and give you enough opportunity to visit some exciting places very comfortably.

Things To Do

Things To Do: Kutch (Kachchh) Tourism And Travel Guide

Witness the Phenomenal Rann Mahotsav:

Being part of the magical Rann Mahotsav is the best thing that you do here. Kutch is most famous for this festival, which is celebrated between November and January. It is the most popular tourist attraction of all. The desert sparkles during the full moon night when the light bounces off the surface offer a spectacular view. Don’t miss the camel safari and camping in tents during your trip.

Be At the Highest Peak — Kala Dungar:

Kalo Dungar, also known as the Black Hill, is the highest point of Kutch. It offers a jaw-dropping view of the entire region, especially the Rann and the border of India and Pakistan. Hiking here is recommended only for professionals and experts as it can get dangerous with a novice. Another key attraction here is the Dattatreya temple, a three-headed incarnation of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva considered to be as old as 400 years.

Explore the Indian Ass Sanctuary:

Exploring the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary can be an exciting experience for many visitors. Placed in the Little Rann of Kutch, this sanctuary is one of its kind as it is different from most of the wildlife sanctuaries in India. This reserve is basically a desert with withered grassland, just about perfect for feeding about 2100 animals residing here. It is the only home for the Indian Wild Ass, most commonly knows as Ghudkar or Khur. This sanctuary is also a dwelling place for 32 species of mammal and a significant breeding site for birds.

Admire the Royal Vijay Villas Palace:

The Royal Palace of Vijay Villas was a summer palace of Jadejas in earlier times. It has become a key tourist spot and very popular amongst visitors. You can take a ramble down the private beach near royal residence or simply admire the magnificence of this palace.

Spend a Day’s Picnic at the Topansar Lake:

Situated at the core of Mandvi city, Topansar Lake is one of the top tourist spots in Kutch. The lake area is prevalent among the locals and visitors as a picnic spot and is also a paradise for bird watchers because of several migratory birds are spotted during the winter season. Don’t forget to click some cool pictures of black-headed & few brown-headed gulls.

Explore Dholavira:

Dholavira, more famously known as Kotada Timba, is one of the historical sites in Kutch. The remains of Harappan civilization have been discovered by the Archeological Department of India. Remainders of all the conditions of the Harappan period (2900 BC to 1500 BC) have been unearthed here. And so Dholavira has become popular amongst history students and travellers who love traversing unique destinations in India.

Kutch Travelogue – Things to do apart from the Rann of Kutch

Welcome back! If you’ve landed on this blog post, I think it’s safe to assume that you’re as enamored by the mesmerizing Rann of Kutch as I am… or should I say.. ‘was.’ Very few have heard of it – the Great White Desert in Gujarat … a vast stretch of salt flats that go as far as the eye can see and appear to touch the sky at the horizon. On a full moon night, the white salt grains sparkle like silver; and during sunrise or sunset, the plains take on hues of purples and oranges – outworldly sights, both times!

It’s no wonder then that the Rann Utsav (or the Desert Celebration) is on most travellers’ agendas between November to February. It was on mine too, for years, until I ticked it off the bucket list last month. But was it worth the hype? Not really – I’ll tell you all about it. Read on.

RANN OF KUTCH TRAVELOGUE

From mumbai to bhuj.

Plans to visit the Rann of Kutch over the last 2-3 years never materialized, and, like most of my travels, this one was quite spontaneous, too. We decided to visit merely 24 hours before embarking on a road trip from Mumbai to Bhuj , a city in the district of Kutch – the details of which are mentioned in an earlier blog post. We entered our hotel in Bhuj (the first one we walked into) at 11:30 PM, after 18 hours of driving, and luckily, found some food in a small restaurant that was about to close nearby. Most restaurants were already shut by then.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Jade (@thatgoangirl) on Feb 19, 2020 at 4:58am PST

The next morning, Day 1, we started off exploring Bhuj pretty late in the day, after catching up on work from the hotel – digital nomad things, and all that. We took it easy, merely exploring the local markets and the handicraft stores such as Khamir Craft Resource Centre. On Day 2, we checked out some more handicraft villages, namely Bhujodi (which was amazing) and Nirona, which we heard was great, but was pretty deserted, with no people or handicrafts to be seen.

After lunch and an hour of rest at the hotel, we checked out the Ramkund Stepwell and Swaminarayan Mandir, a gorgeous white marble temple that we reached a little before sunset.

I’ve already written about everything you need to know about this city in my Travel Guide to Bhuj , so you can learn more about what to eat, where to stay et al.

FROM BHUJ TO MANDVI

On Day 3 of our trip, we checked out of our hotel and headed off to see the city’s jewels – the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal, which took up the entire morning, but it definitely was the best thing to do in Bhuj! By afternoon we found ourselves setting off to Mandvi (after having road-side Dabeli for lunch). Mark my words, every day was spontaneous – I knew the areas around Bhuj more or less because like I said, I planned to visit several times, but we were just winging it from day to day, with no itinerary of sorts.

After about an hour of painless driving, we found ourselves looking for a hotel in Mandvi – not a very pleasant experience. My Travel Guide to Mandvi tells you more about that, as well as the things to do, where to stay, and what to see. We didn’t need much time to explore this little seaside town in Gujarat, a day was more than sufficient, even for the slowest of travelers. The only attraction worth checking out was the Vijay Vilas Palace, a breathtaking architectural beauty.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Jade (@thatgoangirl) on Feb 28, 2020 at 4:43am PST

On the evening of our arrival in Mandvi, we spent the majority of our time looking for accommodation, an hour at the beach, and then worked at our hotel until late evening, with a break for dinner.

The next morning, which was Day 4 of our trip, we hopped down to the beach at dawn in the hopes of spotting flamingos but didn’t see any, since we later learned that they migrated to Manvdvi in July. On the way back to the hotel, we lucked out and stumbled upon a gorgeous mosque – the Mazar–e-Noorani, of the Bohri Muslim community. We then headed to our hotel, packed up our stuff, and checked out after a quick breakfast of fafda jalebi at a stall outside the hotel. Mandvi may have seemed rushed, but there was literally nothing else to do there.

FROM MANDVI TO RANN OF KUTCH

By noon, we had driven back to Bhuj and were at the city centre – by now, an area we knew well. We had initially decided to stay in Bhuj for another day, but since we had half the day to spare and nothing more to do in the city, we carried on driving towards the Rann of Kutch – a distance of about 80 kms. No sooner than we left Bhuj behind us we found ourselves driving past desert scenes of sparse vegetation and of men herding camels, for close to an hour.

On entering the Rann of Kutch, you’ll begin seeing small hotels cropping up. If you’re planning to stay at the Rann of Kutch for a night or two, consider choosing one of these simple hut-like properties to plop your bags in.

For those driving to the Rann of Kutch, keep in mind that there are no petrol pumps here – the nearest being over 55 kms away. Secondly, there are no ATMs here either. Inquire at the dhabas near the tent city and they’ll point you to someone who sells petrol. Be ready to shell out Rs. 20 extra per litre, and carry cash.

rann of kutch tent city

The tent city in Dordo, set up by the govt of Gujarat, is the closest accommodation you will find to the White Desert, but staying here is insanely expensive – ranging from anywhere between Rs. 5500 to Rs. 10,000 per person for a double or triple sharing tent. Meals are included in the price and entertainment in the form of cultural performances happen on a daily basis, giving you a glimpse into the culture of Gujarat.

This, along with the convenience of proximity to the White Dessert make it a deal that many consider worth spending on. While I don’t think twice about spending on experiences, I didn’t fancy this one in the slightest.

After a quick lunch of delicious dal tadka and jeera rice at a roadside Dhaba near the tent city, we headed off to the Rann of Kutch area. Due to its proximity to Pakistan, this is a highly sensitive area with tight security. Individuals need to get a permit at the gate and if you’re driving down, you will need to get a permit for your car too – which is at Rs. 200 per day (which also grants you access to Kala Dungar, so keep your permit handy because it *will* be checked several times). After wrapping up these formalities, we were allowed to drive a few meters in and had to park (why the permit!?)

rann of kutch guide

Here, hordes of decked-up camels and carts stand with their owners, ready to take you into the desert. Depending on the size of the cart, you would need to pay anywhere between Rs. 200 – and Rs. 1000 per person, then hop on with a bunch of other people and make your way to the White Desert. From here – the camel point, the white salt flats were nowhere to be seen – not even in the slightest.

You would need to disembark at the end of the camel ride and walk in any direction you please to find the salt flats – the closer you are, the browner the earth is, and the more you walk, the better your chances of finding pristine salt surfaces. If you visit towards the end of the festival, the slimmer your chances of seeing untouched white flats as they are marred with footprints, camel tracks, and more. Quite disappointing!

camel cart rann of kutch

It didn’t take us long to find our way back to the car and head off – lucky we didn’t book a stay anywhere – the experience doesn’t warrant an overnight stay, or even a half-day stay, in my opinion. I had an inkling that this was a hyped-up experience, and kept expectations low, avoiding disappointment.

FROM THE GREAT WHITE RANN TO KALA DUNGAR

It was only 3 PM, and we hadn’t really planned on what to do next – are you seeing a pattern here (lol!). We’d vaguely heard of Kala Dungar, literally translating to the Black Hills, which was pretty close to the White Desert. We leisurely made the 90 km drive out of Rann of Kutch to Kala Dungar in close to 2 hours, again through pretty much barren land and a few small villages in between.

kala dungar kutch

We parked our car and walked a short distance up the hill to Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch. The road was lined with vendors selling everything from Gujarati handicrafts, Rajasthani Juttis and apparel with mirror-work that looked very attractive, toys, roasted corn, sugarcane juice and more. Kala Dungar was absolutely gorgeous and since it was a ‘sunset point,’ it was pretty empty at 5 PM in the evening, with only 8-10 people around. Vendors consistently hounded us to don a turban and click photos, but they left us alone after in due time.

thatgoangirl kutch guide

In front of us, on one end, was the azure blue Kutch Lake, laced with white salt around the edges, sharing its borders with Pakistan on one side and Dolavira on the other. Between us at Kala Dungar and the lake were rolling black hills. We grabbed a tiny cup of tea, sat down in silence and enjoyed the magnificent view and strong wind for almost an hour in absolute peace.

We didn’t wait until sunset, but as we descended down the hill at 6 PM, 2 bus-loads of tourists were making their way up to enjoy the sunset, and we were glad to have avoided them. Once again, our random plan worked out in our favour. Oh, before I forget, I should also mention that the washrooms here are terrible – avoid if possible.

On the way out, we passed the mysterious ‘Magnetic Hill’ in Kutch. We switched off the car and let it come to a halt. Within a couple of minutes, the car began to move forward – on what seemed like a flat surface, for around 100 meters – just as we had read online.

FROM KALA DUNGAR TO BHUJ AND DOLAVIRA

From Mandvi to Rann of Kutch and then to Kala Dungar… it had been a long, tiring day and as we made our way towards Bhuj again, we decided to stop at the first good hotel we saw. It was around 9 PM when we found Hotel Bhagwati on the highway, just after crossing Bhuj and we were delighted by the spotless rooms, comfy bed, good washroom and nice service. We ordered dinner from Bhagwati Restaurant on the ground floor but didn’t quite like the food.

The next day, Day 5, we headed out by 9 AM after working from the hotel room. The destination was Dolavira – on the little island of Khadir, an offbeat place to travel to in Gujarat that we heard about through a biker friend. It is a very prominent archaeological site, for it belonged to the Indus Valley Civilization.

Dolavira holds the ruins of the largest Harappan sites known to exist, and since it was inhabited for 1200 years (between 3000 BC to 1800 BC), excavations reveal much about life in those times through the city’s stepwell, sustainable use of water, and ingenuity of the town, which still amazes historians.

We drove on for 200 kms until we reached a long road with white salt marshes on both sides. While driving on for what seemed like an hour, we lucked out and spotted a sole flamingo in a patch of water in the desert, much to my delight. I stopped by the side of the road for a good 20 minutes, watching it wade through the water – and not a single car passed us the entire time.

road trip to dolavira

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Jade (@thatgoangirl) on Mar 4, 2020 at 9:05pm PST

Once in Dolavira, we drove around the tiny island, probably a little larger than Divar island in Goa – and found a small temple by the Kutch lake… the shores, as white as the photoshopped pictures of the Rann of Kutch. This was the same lake that we had seen yesterday from another vantage point, at Kala Dungar. Everywhere we looked, we saw white salt marshes with no hype, no pomp, no camels, no tourists. There are a few hotels here, which are again, quite expensive.

For lunch, we stopped at a government-run hotel. We had actually stopped there to inquire about stays (Rs. 6000 per night including all meals and a guide to the Harappan civilization) but decided against staying and merely had a delicious lunch in their restaurant instead.

At around 2 PM, when we had dined to our heart’s content, we headed to an unexplored area of the island.  It was another road, with salt marshes on both sides for miles and miles (still in pristine condition in Feb, when the Rann of Kutch is in bad shape at the end of the tourist season).

To get on the road, you will need to get BSF permission from the Border Security Force office on the island. It may be a pain to do, but it’s completely 100% worth it. Keep in mind that once on that stretch of road, you won’t be able to step on the marsh as it is still wet from the lake drying up.

thatgoangirl dolavira white dessert rann

Isn’t it enthralling!? It was the fact that we couldn’t stay here till sunset or visit at night (due to the border security restrictions) that we decided not to stay at Dolavira.

FROM DOLAVIRA TO LITTLE RANN

We left Dolavira at around 5 PM and drove until night when we stopped at a place called Sankeshwar, which happened to be a religious place for the Jain community. After spending the night at a wonderful hotel called Hotel Grand Parshwanath (this trip was really lucky in terms of random, last-minute, super-cheap accommodation!), we set off the next morning to The Little Rann!

trip to kutch travel guide

Very few people choose to visit the Little Rann because firstly, while it is still in the Kutch district of Gujarat, it is very far from the popular Rann of Kutch. And secondly, it comprises of hundreds of kilometres of bare, parched land and nothing more.

kutch tour guide reviews

The landscape, however, is one of the most fascinating in the world. When the coastal wetlands dry up after the monsoons, the land cracks into large parched pieces, encrusted with salt. Though it looks bleak, it is rich in biodiversity, being home to local and migratory birds, the Indian wolf, desert fox and endangered species like the Wild Ass and Indian Bustard.

After a 6-hour drive spanning 250 kms, we turned into the Little Rann. No permissions or payments/tickets were needed… we just kept driving on dusty paths that got drier and more barren as we drove. Slowly, cracked land appeared – and the dry chunks of earth got bigger and bigger. There was absolutely nothing to see, but open land, the tyre tracks in front of us… and our own tyre tracks behind. After driving on this car-made pathway for close to 50 kms, we strayed off for a couple of hundred meters and couldn’t find our way back to the path. In some areas, the land was still soft underneath and looks deceivingly dry on the top – which can be quite scary because you’re miles away from any help!

little rann of kutch

After driving through the Little Rann for 3 hours – and spotting animals in the distance, we turned around and headed back, following our own tracks. This, the Wild Ass Sanctuary at Little Rann is an experience I’ll never forget – and I’d highly recommend spending a morning or an afternoon here. Ensure you’re safely out by twilight or there’s little that anyone can do to get you out – with no network, no direction boards and no human life. You’ll be lucky if you spot another car on the entire journey.

best indian travel blogger offbeat

That wrapped up 7 days in the Kutch – and as soon as we got out of Little Rann, we began our drive back to Mumbai . At around 8 PM, we entered Vadodara and stopped for the night at Hotel Comfort Inn, a luxury property on the highway which is usually priced at Rs. 5000 +, that we snagged at Rs. 1800 on MakeMyTrip – right there in the reception of the hotel! Last-minute trips really do work better than planned ones, guys – let this travelogue be proof of that! After we had nice long showers and lounged around for a bit, we headed out for Pizza in Vadodara – vegetarian, of course… sigh… Gujarat!

The next morning, Day 8, we continued our drive back to Mumbai and were safely home by 5 PM. I’ll wind up this rather lengthy travelogue without further ado – but if you have any questions, feel free to comment or to reach out to me on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram . Onto the next adventure!

Rann Utsav In Kutch: How To Plan The Best Trip?

Last Updated on January 3, 2024 by Soumya

Planning to attend Rann Utsav in Kutch this year? Keen to find more about Rann Utsav packages and deals but not sure where to begin? Don’t worry, I was on a similar boat too.

That is, until I attended the famous Rann Mahotsav in 2021 and was able to demystify the entire Rann booking process.

So, here goes my complete guide on how to plan the best ever trip to Kutch’s Rann Utsav .

You will find all you need to know about Rann Utsav packages, tents, and bhungas, and how to book them. I also talk about what is included in these packages and if you can attend the festival without opting for one.

Plus, you will also learn how to make the most of your time at Rann Utsav, which day trips to take, and how to plan for them. After all, there are so many wonderful places to visit in Kutch and so many wonderful Kutchi arts to discover! Why just restrict ourselves to our Rann resorts!!

Table of Contents

Rann Utsav – A mélange of nature and culture

Author near a bhunga at Rann Utsav Tent City

Rann means desert and utsav means festival. The term “Rann Utsav” literally translates to “festival of the desert”.

In Gujarat, Rann Utsav is a celebration of nature, culture, and the people of Kutch.

The festival celebrates the unique landscape of Kutch – a salt desert that shines every winter and the marshy wetlands that are filled with exotic wildlife. It celebrates a wide array of art and craft that have evolved in Kutch over centuries, thanks to the diversity of its tribes and cultural transfusion across borders. It celebrates the poise and resilience of its people who have seen rainless years and devastating earthquakes, yet have always risen like the phoenix.

At the Rann festival, you will be greeted by vibrant colors of Kutch embroidery, stay in Lippan-covered bhungas, listen to Kutchi folk songs, and stare at miles of uninterrupted , shimmering white salt.

Evolution of Rann Utsav

Gujarat Tourism started this festival as a 3-day initiative in 2005. Now, it has bloomed into a 4-month affair, beginning in November every year and ending in February.

It is held in Dhordo, a small village that lies on the fringes of White Rann.

Earlier, the celebrations used to be more like a fest with locals setting up food and souvenir stalls in the market. Tourists used to come in and see the White Desert, eat local food, and buy local art.

Of late, two government-certified partners, The Tent City and White Rann Resort , have taken the celebrations a notch higher by creating huge gated resorts. These offer traditional accommodation with a bit of luxury, regular cultural programs, adventure activities, in-house craft bazaars, and curated Kutch itineraries. This adds to the overall festive mood in Dhordo.

Dates for Rann Utsav

The Rann Festival is usually held between the months of November – February. The dates for Kutch Rann Utsav 2021 are 1st November 2021 – 20 February 2022.

As per the official website of Gujarat Tourism , the dates remain the same for 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Rann Utsav packages

First, let’s tackle the question of Rann Utsav packages. What are they and why do they exist?

In my opinion, Rann Utsav packages exist to give the guests a festive feel and to deal with transport issues in the desert.

Only Tent City and White Rann Resort offer Rann Utsav packages.

Access to more cultural activities

If you opt for a package, you get to stay inside a gated resort (Tent City or White Rann Resort) and experience a plethora of cultural and adventurous activities that happen inside. There is dance, music, games, food, shopping – everything at your disposal. In short, you get to stay right in the middle of a festival.

If you do not opt for a package, you cannot attend these celebrations.

Easy travel

Packages make traveling in the desert super easy.

It is not easy to get around Rann of Kutch by public transport. Buses are few and far in between. Plus, it is not easy to get to the White Rann, Kalo Dungar, Gandhi nu Gam from Dhordo.

Rann Utsav packages usually include pick-up from Bhuj airport or railway station as well as day trips to these nearby destinations. Some of the most popular destinations included in Rann Utsav packages are the following.

  • Sunset/sunrise tour of White Rann.
  • Tour of Kala Dungar and Gandhi nu Gam.
  • Sightseeing tour of Bhuj that includes Bhujodi, Kutch Museum, and Shri Swaminarayan Temple.
  • Sightseeing tour of Mandvi that includes Vijay Vilas Palace, Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial, and the beach.

Plus, there are several other destinations in Kutch that you can visit by paying extra. Have a look at our Kutch bucket list to get an idea of all the wonderful things that you can see here.

No Rann permit hassles

Third, you avoid the hassles of procuring your Rann permit (I talk more about it below) if you have a package. Your resort takes care of it.

Booking the best Rann Utsav package

Trying to book the best Rann Utsav package can be an overwhelming process especially because of the amount of information that is out there.

When I was doing my own research for the Rann Festival, I was pretty confused by the number of websites that turned up on the first page of Google. All of them looked and sounded similar for a first-timer like me. I am glad I was able to go on this media trip with Gujarat Tourism and Incredible India so that I could simplify the entire Rann Utsav booking process for you.

Do I need to book a Rann Utsav package?

No, you do not need to book a Rann Utsav package to be able to attend the festival.

You can stay at one of the many resorts/homestays in Dhordo or Bherandiala (this place is famous for its mawa dessert) and still experience the local festival by visiting the handicraft and food stalls set up in Dhordo village. Gateway to Rann Resort in Dhordo is also an amazing place to stay.

However, you will not be able to attend the cultural celebrations inside the gated resorts.

Plus, you will need to arrange your own transport if you wish to travel to these stalls from where you are staying or if you want to do some day trips in Rann of Kutch. For example, you will need a personal vehicle to go to White Rann, Kalo Dungar, Dholavira, or Bhuj. For some areas like the White Rann or Kalo Dungar, you will need a special Rann permit (get it online here) too. If you can hire a private taxi with a local driver, then you are good to go.

If not, then I would highly recommend booking a Rann Utsav package.

Benefits of booking a package deal for Rann Utsav

Booking a package takes out a lot of stress from the trip planning process . One you book a package, you just need to show up in Bhuj and the rest will be taken care of. Transport, permits, food, and stay are all included in the packages offered.

Also, with a package, you will be able to attend far more cultural activities, fests, and bazaars either at Tent City or White Rann Resort.

Getting a Rann package is definitely an easier and more convenient way to enjoy your Rann experience. However, it does take away some flexibility from your experience. You will need to travel on buses with other tourists at fixed times.

Available packages for Rann Utsav

Rann Utsav – Tent City (often referred to as Dhordo Tent City or just Tent City) and White Rann Resort are the only two resorts that provide guests with the option of booking Rann Utsav packages. Both resorts are certified partners of the Gujarat government and have similar, if not identical, packages.

Find all packages of Tent City listed on their official website here . Find all packages of White Rann Resort listed on their official website here .

All other websites that you see on the first page of Google offer packages from either of the two resorts mentioned above.

Here are some broad differences that I found between the packages offered by White Rann Resort and Tent City.

Tent City vs White Rann Resort

  • Tent City offers 3 kinds of packages (1N/2D, 2N/3D, and 3N/4D) whereas White Rann Resort offers 2 kinds of packages(1N/2D and 2N/3D).
  • White Rann Resort offers you both tent and bhunga accommodation whereas Tent City offers you only tent accommodation.

Most other stuff that is included in their packages (food, adventure rides, cultural activities, craft village) is kind of similar. By the way, Tent City has a spa and a gym. I am not sure if White Rann Resort has one.

Prices of Rann Utsav packages

Prices vary by the category of tents/bhunga and by date. If you have a look at the packages listed above, you will notice that it is cheaper in November and February and during weekdays. Weekends, Christmas, and Full Moon nights, and December – January are more expensive.

Rann Utsav online booking

You can book a Rann Utsav package online on the official websites of either Tent City or White Rann Resort . If you are more comfortable with an aggregator website such as Booking, try the following links.

  • Rann Utsav – Tent City
  • White Rann Resort

Where to stay at Kutch Rann Utsav?

If you are opting for a packaged deal, then Rann Utsav Tent City and White Rann Resort are great places to stay. Tariff at both places is on the higher side but that includes a lot of complimentary activities such as cultural events, adventure activities, and day trips to nearby destinations.

If you do not want to take up a Rann Utsav package but are still looking to stay in a luxurious bhunga, try Gateway to Rann Resort . This place is more affordable but obviously, you need to plan your own day trips and Rann tours.

If you need a budget accommodation, try the smaller hotels and homestays of Dhordo and Bherandiala .

Personal experience of staying at Rann Utsav – Tent City

My tent at Tent City

I stayed at The Tent City for 2 nights and can speak of my experience there. I stayed in a premium AC tent that was equipped with a king-sized bed, living area with a sofa set, dressing area, and a bathroom. There was hot water round the clock and an AC to combat day time heat. My tent also had a seating area outside where I could just plop myself and watch the world go by.

The tents in Tent City are divided into several clusters. Each cluster has 35-40 tents, an entrance gate, and a recreational area in the middle. There are no locks on the tent but they are safe. Security guards are present at the entrance 24*7.

I was in Cluster C which was closest to the dining area as well as the shopping arcade within the complex. I could walk to every other place. However, if you are in one of the faraway clusters, then you can use golf carts to ferry yourself.

Food served at Tent City is vegetarian. Both the usual vegetarian and Jain options are available. Meals typically contained one soup, a couple of starters, green salad, main course which had rice, chapati, and 4-5 vegetarian curries, buttermilk, and a couple of desserts.

The resort had arranged for us to travel to White Rann for sunset, Kalo Dungar, and Gandhi nu Gam with a certified tour guide. Those trips were absolutely amazing.

How to get to Rann Utsav in Kutch?

Kutch puppet female

The easiest way to get to Rann Utsav is to first get to Bhuj, the headquarters of Kutch district. You can either fly to Bhuj (albeit only from Mumbai) or take a train/bus from Ahmedabad. Check out the details in my Kutch travel guide .

Once you arrive in Bhuj, your resort will pick you up from the airport or the station if you have booked a packaged deal.

If not, you will need to hire a private cab to take you around. Connect with Amazing Kutch Tourism for the same.

Other amazing things to do in Kutch

When visiting Kutch for the Rann Utsav, you need not just confine to the festival grounds. There are so many other wonderful things to do in Kutch that you will be spoiled for choices.

Most of these destinations like the hills of Kalo Dungar, the craft village of Nirona, and the historical monuments of Bhuj are just a day trip away.

Luxury resorts like the Tent City and White Rann Resort usually include some of these Kutch destinations in their Rann Utsav packages. For others, you will need to pay extra and/or hire a cab on your own.

Practical information for planning your Rann Utsav trip

  • Mobile networks are usually patchy. Even though I had heard that Jio and Airtel worked well, I was surprised to find that both of them were down in Rann of Kutch. Surprisingly, Vodafone worked fine for all the days that I was there. Our resort was supposed to have Wi-Fi but it was down for the two days that I was there.
  • If you are planning for a photoshoot in White Rann, carry a set of traditional Kutchi clothes for the authentic look. If you wish, you can also buy local clothes and jewelry in Dhordo/Kalo Dungar/Gandhi nu Gam. Entire ensembles are available for rent in Bhuj as well.
  • It is hard to find non-vegetarian food at the Rann Utsav. I would recommend sticking to local vegetarian fare.
  • If you are craving for some Indian Chinese, pani puri, or potato twisties, try Urban Kutch – a local restaurant with a modern twist.
