Singapore is both a major port of call and also a home (Embarkation-Disembarkation) port for cruises in the South East Asia itineraries. The city-state has two cruise ports and terminals.

As a rule of thumb, small and mid-sized cruise ships dock at the International Passenger Terminal , whilst larger ships dock at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre aka as MBCCS.

The International Passenger Terminal in Singapore Cruise Port

The International Passenger Terminal (IPT) is located on the western south shore of the city-state less than 3 miles (4.5 km) from the city’s downtown (with a population of 5.8 million). This terminal (IPT) is located next to the VivoCity shopping mall and right across the Sentosa Island, a major attraction of Singapore. Singapore Cruise Website: www.singaporecruise.com.sg

The Pier and Berths in the International Passenger Terminal

The International Passenger Terminal has one L shaped pier perpendicular to the coastline with 2 berths where two cruise ships can dock. Do not be confused with the Regional Ferry Terminal (RFT) next to it.

Cruise travelers will find a very well kept terminal building many times referred to as HarbourFront Passenger Terminal, where you will find all basic services and amenities.

Once you walk down the gangway into the pier, there is one exit gate to the terminal. The exit gates are at no more than 500 feet (150 meters) from the gangway.

What's at the International Passenger Terminal in Singapore Cruise Port

Amenities and services.

Cruise travelers will find at the Terminal all amenities and services such as restrooms, 3 money exchange counters and ATM's, public phones, Internet with Wi-Fi, coffee shops, a 7-Eleven convenience store, vending machines, a few apparel stores and a branch of the Singapore Postal Services. The Terminal also has a very convenient (and affordable) Left Luggage service. Singapore Postal Services Website: www.singpost.com

Tourist Info in Singapore

You will find a tourist information counter in the terminal. There are also Tourist Information aka Visitor Centers booths around the city’s downtown.

Duty-Free Shopping at the IPT Terminal

Cruise travelers looking for duty-free shopping will be disappointed to know that there are only a few shops at the cruise terminal. However, just next to terminal you will find all major brands and chain stores at the VivoCity Shopping Mall, which is the largest retail venue in Singapore. VivoCity Website: www.vivocity.com.sg

Transportation at the International Passenger Terminal

Cruise travelers planning to explore Singapore on your own will find that the city has a efficient, modern and affordable transportation network.

Limousines and Taxis

The Limousine Counter is on Level 1 (Main Concourse just outside the Arrival Hall) with fares to top attractions around SGD$50 (US$36). Taxis are available right outside the Terminal building. All taxis are metered and take around 10 to 15 minutes to the city center and around 30 to 40 minutes to the airport.

Underground and Public Bus

The MRT is am excellent underground/subway network with stops close to all main attractions in Singapore and also with a connection to the airport. There is a stop right at the HarbourFront on the North East Line (NEL), which has stops close to Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Little India. Right outside the main exit of the HarbourFront Terminal there are bus stops to most directions, with buses taking around 20 minutes to the city center. To See and Do Close by the International Passenger Terminal

Just outside the HarbourFront Terminal building, on your right (east) cruise travelers will find the VivoCity shopping mall. On the left side of the Terminal, there is a Cable Car to the Sentosa Island. If this top attraction of Singapore is on your plans, you may also consider using the Sentosa Express monorail, which has a stop located at VivoCity (Lobby L, Level 3).

Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore Cruise Port

The Marina Bay Cruise Centre (aka MBCCS) where larger ships dock is located on the south shore of the city-state around 2 miles (3 km) from the downtown. MBCCS Website: mbccs.com.sg

Pier and Berths in Marina Bay Cruise Centre

There is one long pier on Marina Bay which is perpendicular to the coastline with two berths for two cruise ships. This is where large ships of up to 220,000 GMT and up to 360 meters (1,181 feet) in length dock. However, small ships of cruise lines like Azamara, Seabourn or Silversea also dock at the Marina Bay Cruise Center.

Cruise travelers will find in the port one modern cruise terminal on two levels where you will find all basic services and amenities.

Once you walk out of the ship you will be on a covered corridor at no more than 500 feet/150 meters to the entrance to the Terminal building. Before entering the terminal, all passengers will be checked by Singapore Customs. Insiders Tip: make sure to have your passport ready.

Amenities and Services in Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Cruise travelers will find at the terminal (on level 2) amenities and services such as a restrooms, the CIMB Bank currency exchange kiosk, 3 ATM's, a Mobilephone shop, a cafeteria and Watsons convenience store. Wi-Fi is provided by the Marina Bay Cruise Centre FREE inside the terminal. On Level 1 (ground-floor) cruise travelers will find restrooms, a left luggage service and the CruiseFly counter that offers affordable transfers to the airport.

Tourist Info in the Marina Bay Cruise Centre

You will find a tourist information desk (look for Visitor Center) at the Terminal on (Level 2). Cruise travelers will also find “Visitor Centers” on the main touristic areas or close to top attractions.

Duty-free Shops in the Terminal of the Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Cruise travelers looking for duty-free shopping will not fin any shops at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre cruise terminal.

Transportation at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Cruise travelers planning to explore Singapore on your own will find just outside the terminal taxis and public buses. The underground-subway-metro is within walking distance.

Taxis are metered and reasonably priced. Uber operates in Singapore and can also be a good option to get around the city.

Public buses are efficient and very affordable. Just outside the terminal you will find the #402 bus stop located at the coach bay with a direct service to the city center. Buses operate between 6:00am and 11:00pm and a single fare costs S$2.00 (under US$1.00). Insiders Tip : make sure you have exact fare as no change will be given back.

The MRT (Mass Rail Transit) is Singapore’s underground/subway/metro. It covers the entire city and is efficient, safe and modern. The Marina South Pier MRT Station is an extension of the North-South Line and the closest to the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. After exiting the terminal, look for a covered walkway on your right. The station is around 1/3 mile/600 meters away.

Outside the terminal you will see a City Sightseeing stop. However, be aware that this popular Hop-On Hop-Off bus only stops at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre to pick cruise travelers with booked tours either with the cruise line or with online services. Within walking distance of the Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Although the Marina Bay Cruise Centre is located relatively close to Singapore’s many attractions, there is nothing of interest to visit or explore within walking distance. However, with public transportation cruise travelers will be in the city center in less than 20 minutes.

Some luxury cruise lines docking at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre may offer a shuttle bus to the city center.

Embarking and/or Disembarking in Singapore

Singapore is a major Home Port with most cruise ships Embarking and Disembarking passengers in the city-state for the start and/or end of cruises in South East Asia.

Cruise travelers that have never been in Singapore before should consider flying to Singapore at least 2 days before the cruise to explore the many attractions of the city. For those traveling from far away continents like Europe and America, flying at least one day ahead of the cruise is mandatory. Firstly, to assure that you will not miss the ship (and the beginning of cruise). Secondly, to recover from a long flight (any thing between 18 and 30 hours). Last but not least, to overcome jet lag and adapt to a new time zone - around 12 hours. Even for those traveling from Australia, it should be noted that a flight from Sidney to Singapore is around 8 hours long and that there is a 3 hour time difference.

Public Transportation between Cruise Port and Airport

Naturally your may prefer to explore the highlights of Singapore after a cruise and fly home a couple of days latter. Whatever you choose to do, cruisers will eventually need to travel between the cruise port to the Changi Airport (Singapore's main international airport). Transportation to and from the Airport to or from the Cruise Terminals in Singapore is affordable, fast and efficient. Uber has been the Editor's choice but there taxis, public buses and the MRT have excellent connections. Check the Changi Airport Transportation Website Page for more details .

Smokers advise

Singapore has very harsh laws regarding smoking in public and many cruise travelers are aware of this. However, not all are aware that if you bring cigarettes into Singapore you MUST declare and pay tax to customs at the airport.Check the Singapore Customs Website. to know what to expect.

Cruise ships dock at the Singapore Cruise center at the Sentosa Harbourfront, which is connected to the harbor front center. Recently remodeled, the cruise terminal features numerous shops, restaurants, cafes which offer free WiFi for customers and a post office. Finding your way through the labyrinthine complex may be somewhat confusing. Taxis are generally available. HarborFront has an Metro Station, Bus Interchange and cable car links to Sentosa Island and Mount Faber. All these connections are within easy walking distance of the Cruise center. In 2012 Marina Bay Cruise Center Singapore has opened. Located at the southern tip of central Singapore, you will appreciate the convenience of being close to the airport and the city center. The nearest MRT station is Marina Bay, a 10 minute walk. Bus Service 402 will stop by the cruise center from Marina Bay which covers the first four bus stops. The bus stop is located at the coach bay at Level 1. A single fare costs below S$2.00. Please prepare the exact fare as no change will be given.A free shuttle bus is often offered to Marine Sands, a huge shopping and hotel complex. Often the ship's shuttles, sometimes free, will drop right at the Marina Bay MRT station. Distance Approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from downtown Singapore (Marina Bay area). By 2027 the two docks and terminals will be merged together and allow a continuous promenade to be established as part of the Greater Southern Waterfront.

Singapore Changi International Airport is a mere 20 minute drive and the city center is just minutes away via the city's subway system (Mass Rapid Transit)

Sightseeing:

Singapore is a small country on a small island, but with over four million people it's a fairly crowded city. The center of the city - consisting roughly of Orchard, the Riverside and a chunk of Chinatown - is known in acronym-loving Singapore as the CBD (Central Business District).

• Riverside - (also known as Civil District); Museums, statues and theaters, not to mention restaurants, bars and clubs.
• Orchard Road - Miles and miles of shopping malls.
• Bugis and Kampong Glam - Bugis and Kampong Glam are Singapore's old Malay district, now largely taken over by mall-shopping, although Arab Street in the Kampong Glam area is well worth a visit for its eclectic mix of unique shops and restaurants.
• Chinatown - The area originally designated for Chinese settlement by Stamford Raffles. Now a Cantonese enclave in predominantly Hokkien Singapore.
• Little India - A piece of India to the north of the city core.
• Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh - Budget accommodations and Burmese temples within striking distance of the center.
• North and West - The northern and western parts of the island, also known as Woodlands and Jurong respectively, form Singapore's residential and industrial hinterlands.
• East Coast - The largely residential eastern part of the island contains Changi Airport and many famous eateries. Katong is located in the East Coast and is famous for its Peranakan food, such as laksa. Joo Chiat has some well-restored Peranakan houses with characteristic intricate architecture. Also consists of Geylang Serai, the true home of Singapore's Malays.
• Sentosa - A separate island developed into a resort, Sentosa is the closest that Singapore gets to Disneyland.
• A relatively short journey takes one to the Marina Bay area and in particular, the Marina Bay laser-light show. This occurs twice-nightly and is an attraction that draws thousands of people, both on the river-boats or sitting and standing on the beautiful esplanade which faces the bay. Here is the famous Singapore ‘ Merlion ’ and the surrounding area of the Bay is a mass of colour.

Singapore City Hop-on Hop-off Tour What better way to zip about town to visit the places of interest than on the SIA Hop-on bus? Visitors can get unlimited air-conditioned rides that will take them to over 20 of the most popular attractions in the City. The bus will stop at major shopping malls and hotels such as Raffled City, Singapore Botanic Garden and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay as well as ethnic enclaves like Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street. Passengers can get on and off whenever they want. Take a cab to the nearest stop.

Over 15,000 air-conditioned cabs ply local roads and provide comfortable, hassle-free travel at a very reasonable cost. All taxis are metered and honest. When it rains, do not expect to flag down a taxi.

Trishaws, three-wheeled bicycle taxis, haunt the area around the Singapore River and Chinatown. Geared purely for tourists, they aren't really recommended for serious travel and locals do not use them. There is little room for bargaining: short rides will cost $10-20 and an hour's sightseeing charter about $50 per person.

Classic walks in Singapore include walking down the river from the Merlion through the Quays, or just strolling around Chinatown, Little India or Bugis.

For spectacular views take a ride on the Singapore Flyer , an enormous Ferris Wheel, that is as high as a 70 story building.

Shopping and food.

Located next to the Singapore Cruise center is Vivo City, the largest multi-experiential retail and lifestyle destination in Singapore, featuring about 450 outlets.

Singapore enjoys a reputation as a shoppers paradise, with no import duty or sales tax on most items. The famous shopping area is along Orchard Road, but the more colorful, ethnic shops are found in the sectors of Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown. Handicrafts, cloisonne ware, antique porcelain, jewelry and framed silk tapestries may be some of the items you may want to consider buying. Bargaining is an accepted practice in smaller shops and markets, while prices in more upscale shops and department stores are fixed.

Chewing gum absolutely not allowed! Drinking and eating on public transport strictly prohibited! Not even water!

The local currency is the Singapore dollar. ATMs are ubiquitous in Singapore and credit cards are widely accepted (although shops often levy a 3% surcharge, and taxis a whopping 15%).

If you arrive by cruise ship from another country you will have to declare the amount of cigarettes you have with you and will be taxed accordingly. For a carton: Euro 46 or U.S. $68, if you do not: expect a 20 times higher fine! They will not tell you this in the ship's tax free stores.

Singapore doesn’t host ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft currently. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.

Cruise Port Guide Singapore – Singapore: dock

Most cruise ships still dock at the Harbour Front Centre although your ship could also dock at the new Marine Bay Cruise Centre.  Public transportation is available at both terminals. Hopefully you will dock at the Harbour Front Cruise Centre because it might be just a little further from town, but you do have all the convience you would want.

Transportation

From the Harbour Front Cruise Centre you have so many options when it comes to transportation. You will find this is where you pick up the MRT (Underground system), taxis, buses, monorail or cable car.

The MRT network of Singapore is absolutely perfect. Both cruise terminals link up with the MRT station. It is such an easy, fast and cheap light rail system to use that we could recommend it to everybody. Simply buy a ticket at the machine and off you go. What will be nice to know is that the following MRT stations link up with the following attractions:

It is so easy. The system operates daily from 05:30 am to midnight. Fares range from 0.77 to 2.50 Singapore dollar. Standard tickets for single trip fares cost more than a day pass. Single tickets can be bought at the machine inside the MRT stations. The daycard or ez-link / tourist card can be bought from TransitLink Ticket Offices, It costs 10 SGD per day + a one time 10 SGD deposit. Roughly you could say that if you are planning on going by MRT for more than 5 rides in 1 day the ez link / tourist card will be worth it. The MRT is wheelchair accessible. Officials taxis in Singapore

Taxis are available at the terminal. The taxis don’t have a fixed color, but they always have a taxi sign on the roof. They do have a meter. Taxis can be paid with Singapore dollar or credit card. Check on the window of the taxi what kid of credit card he will take. A ride from the cruise terminal to the airport is about 25 SGD. Any ride from the cruise terminal into town should never around 10 SGD.

Hop on hop off bus Singapore

There is a hop on hop off bus available in Singapore. The cruise centres are not part of their normal loop. You can buy the ticket for the hop on hop off bus at the tourist information desk in the terminal and if enough people buy tickets the tourist information desk will arrange with the hop on hop off bus service to come pick you up at the terminal. If this is not the case you can pick it up at Suntec.

Merlion is your mandatory photo stop in Singapore. This symbol of town represents Singapore (the Lions city) and Singapore as a fishing village. The statue now stand on the Marine Bay reservoir. Make sure to pop by!

This is the waterfront location just north of the mouth of the Singapore river. Along this boulevard you will find all kind of venues like the Theaters on the Bay and the Queen Elizabeth Walk. It is also the perfect spot to view the Laser and Water show that takes places here in the early evening.

If you dock at the Harbour Front you will notice there is a cable car going over the ship. This cable car goes to Sentosa Island. It is a fun way to reach the island. Follow the signs in the cruise terminal that say Cable Car. You can also take the mono rail from Vivocity to Sentosa.

Also known as the fountain of wealth. Until 1998 it was the largest fountain in the world. This large fountain build according to the rules of feng shui has a fountain that performs laser shows in the evening and during the day people can access the smaller fountain in the middle.

Marina Bay Sands oberservation deck The oberservation deck on the Marina Bay Sands hotel is simply something you have to do while in Singapore. But if you are planning to go up there, why not go for a drink at the bar of Ku De Ta. Follow the signs in the lobby of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. The deck is open everyday from 09.30 am to 10 pm. How to get into the Marina Bay Sand Hotel pool? This is one of the most famous pool in the world. The only way to get into the pool is by booking a hotel room in the Marine Bay Sands hotel. Only hotel guests are able to use the facilities here.

These ports often offer something special for the visitor, whether it’s their top-notch facilities, stunning and iconic scenery or proximity to the area's hustle and bustle. Here is a look at some of the best cruise ports and ports of call worldwide.

Port of Singapore

The port of Singapore is one of the biggest in the world. There are two berthing facilities at the Singapore Cruise Centre and Marina Bay Cruise Centre, located next to the Marina South Pier. The port is close to attractions such as Sentosa Island, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown and Marina Bay Sands. Singapore’s strategic location means the destination is often described as the gateway to southeast Asia. Some of the major cruise lines operating from there are Princess, Celebrity, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Holland American Line (HAL) and Silversea.

Piraeus port, Athens, Greece

This ancient city port has three harbours, making it the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Piraeus has religious and historic landmarks of its own, but Athens is only eight miles (13km) to the northeast and is easily accessible via a 30-minute metro ride or a 20- to 30-minute taxi ride. The port connects the peninsula with most Greek islands, and it’s the main stop for cruise ships touring the Aegean Sea. The port is reached by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL, Celebrity, Princess, Azamara, Silversea and Virgin Voyages.

Ports of Dubai, UAE

The glamorous emirate of Dubai remains a major port of embarkation and a call for cruise travellers on itineraries to destinations in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf. The city has two cruise ports, with two terminals in Port Rashid and two at the new Dubai Harbour, which opened in 2020. The latter have entertainment venues, leisure spaces and premium retail shopping areas. Dubai Harbour is directly linked with the city's transport network and monorail system and is visited by Carnival Corporation cruise line brands, while Port Rashid welcomes other major cruise lines.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal, New York City, New York, USA

Seeing the port of Manhattan from the water is arguably one of the most iconic sights to be had from a cruise ship. Passengers can take in the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and Governors Island. Manhattan Cruise Terminal is situated on the Hudson River on the city's west side in the Hell's Kitchen area. New York City has been serving cruise passengers longer than any other US city. From the port, it’s a taxi or subway ride into the city. Cruise lines berthing there include NCL, Cunard, Princess, P&O, Carnival, Oceania, Disney Cruise Line, Fred. Olsen and Viking.

Port of San Miguel de Cozumel, Mexico

San Miguel de Cozumel port is at the heart of this Mexican island and is surrounded by beautiful clear water, a coral reef and miles of beaches offering snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities soon after you disembark. The buzzing city of San Miguel is also a short walk away and has many seafront shops and restaurants. Visitors can walk along the sea wall, El Malecon, and head to the main square. If there is time, ancient Mayan ruins can be explored too. Many ships docking at this port head on to the Caribbean and some of the cruise lines stopping here include Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Marella, MSC and Princess.

Port of Cape Town, South Africa

The cruise terminal at the port of Cape Town is operated by the V&A Waterfront, a 304-acre neighbourhood with shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment options. On the approach to the port, passengers can view the scenic bay and harbour and the mountains beyond. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain to get a beautiful vista of the city that's within walking distance of the port. The major cruise lines heading to and from the port include Oceania, Seabourn, NCL, MSC and Regent Seven Seas.

Geirangerfjord Port, Norway

Cruise guests will enjoy magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord area as they head to the small cruise port. Lined by mountains and waterfalls, the fjord has a magical looking landscape and a very small village. Cruise lines offer excursions from the port, such as kayaking along the waterways, helicopter rides and hiking tours to amazing viewpoints like Eagle Bend and Dalsnibba mountain. Lines including Viking, Hurtigruten, Windstar, Silversea, HAL, Ponant, Celebrity and Cunard all have itineraries to the destination.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

Half Moon Cay is a 2,400-acre island retreat in the Bahamas, located 10 miles (16km) southeast of Nassau. The island is owned by Carnival Corporation and is therefore only a port of call for Carnival and Holland America Line, which use the island as part of their Caribbean and Panama Canal itineraries. The paradise island has facilities for families, couples and groups. There are beach cabanas, bars with thatched roofs and hammocks for relaxing days spent swimming and sunbathing. For more active pursuits scuba diving, snorkelling, jet-skiing, parasailing, glass-bottom boating, cycling and hiking are all part of the offering.

Port of Valletta, Malta

Cruise ships enter the Port of Valletta via the impressive and historic Grand Harbour, which extends for about two miles (3.6km) inland on the island of Malta. Passengers disembarking the ships at Valletta Cruise Port can head to the neighbouring historic Valletta harbour. The waterfront venue offers food, shopping and entertainment and some of the island's most impressive views and iconic ancient buildings. Malta is strategically positioned in the centre of the Mediterranean offering eastern and western itineraries and is visited by cruise lines such as Celebrity, Marella, P&O, Oceania, Fred. Olsen, Princess and HAL.

Port of Skala, Santorini, Greece

The journey to the Greek island of Santorini offers some of the most beautiful views from the Mediterranean Sea. On the approach to the old port, passengers are met with scenes of whitewashed villages with cobalt-blue cupolas set high on the cliffs. Santorini's capital, Fira, can be reached from the port by tender dock and then by cable car, or by walking up 580 or so steps. Santorini is often the most popular cruising destination of all the Greek isles and is visited by lines including Marella, Celestyal, HAL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Celebrity, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Port of Jeju, South Korea

Cruise passengers arriving at the port on the UNESCO-listed Jeju Island in South Korea have the opportunity to explore secluded beaches, underground lava tunnels, caves and waterfalls. Jeju city is one mile (2km) from the port. The island was once a honeymoon destination for South Korean couples and is also home to an adults-only theme park called Love Land, which features more than a hundred erotic sculptures. Quirky cruise itinerary excursions also take in the Teddy Bear Museum. Among the cruise lines stopping at the island are Celebrity, Princess, HAL, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania and Seabourn.

Port of Haifa, Israel

The Port of Haifa is directly linked with downtown Haifa and it only takes a few minutes to walk to the railway station, or around 15 minutes to walk to the city centre. Haifa is the third largest city in Israel and its main attraction is the Bahá’í World Centre and surrounding Bahá’í gardens. The National Museum, Mount Carmel national park, Israel National Museum of Science, Technology, and Space and the Haifa Museum of Art are also worth a visit. The port welcomes HAL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Azamara, Princess Cruises and NCL, among other cruise lines.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port, Croatia

Dubrovnik's main cruise port is located around two miles (3km) away from the Old Town. Most of the cruise ships dock here although some moor in front of the old port, where visitors can then take a tender boat to shore. The old port has UNESCO World Heritage status and is one of the busiest and most beautiful cruise ports in Europe. Dubrovnik’s medieval walled town can be discovered on foot and offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. The port of call is reached by cruise lines including NCL, HAL, Costa, P&O, Marella, Cunard, Celebrity, Emerald, Marella and Viking.

Port of Lisbon, Portugal

The Port of Lisbon is the third-largest port in Portugal. While cruising into it along the Tagus River, the impressive structures of the Belem Tower, Discoveries Monument and Cristo Rei statue of Christ – as well as the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge – are all within sight. Lisbon centre and all its attractions can be reached on a short walk from the cruise port. From Lisbon, it's easy to take day trips to resort towns such as Estoril, Sintra and Fatima. Princess, Virgin Voyages, Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Carnival, Windstar and Oceania all include ports of call at the destination.

PortMiami, Florida, USA

The port of Miami is often referred to as the cruise capital of the world, welcoming more cruise passengers to its terminals than any other port. Miami's geographic position makes it easily accessible to the Caribbean and Latin America on cruise itineraries. MSC Cruises recently began work on its new £265 million ($350m) terminal at the port, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2023. It will have three berths for mega cruise ships, making it North America’s largest cruise terminal. Virgin Voyages opened a dedicated cruise terminal there earlier this year. The three-storey Terminal V hosts the line’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, and will be joined by Valiant Lady later this year. 

Port St. Maarten, Caribbean

Passengers are immediately welcomed to Harbour Point Village when they arrive ashore on the small island of St. Maarten, affectionately known as "the Friendly Island". The island’s colourful capital, Philipsburg, can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. This town has plenty of Dutch charm, great shopping in the form of duty-free outlets, souvenir shops and market stalls, as well as bars and restaurants. There are plenty of watersports available too. This beautiful island is visited by Carnival, Costa, Disney Cruise Line, Princess,  P&O, NCL and HAL, to name a few.

Port of Barcelona, Spain

The Port of Barcelona is a launching-off point for many Mediterranean cruises and has one of the highest concentrations of cruise passengers in Europe. Within it is the old harbour, Port Vell, and at the foot of the port is the city’s famous boulevard, La Rambla, which stretches through the heart of the city centre. The thoroughfare can be reached on foot or by a cruise shuttle bus from the cruise terminals. The port is a draw for major cruise lines including Viking, Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Marella and Virgin Voyages.

Havana Port, Cuba

Havana Harbour and the cruise terminal at Havana port are located on the eastern edge of this Cuban city, while Old Havana is almost on the doorstep of the cruise terminal. From there, passengers can walk to Plaza San Francisco, one of Old Havana's four main squares, while further south is seaside boulevard the Malecón. The city's central park is also accessible on foot, although a journey in a vintage taxi is a must. If your cruise is coming from Tampa, Key West, Miami or Cozumel, Havana is likely to be on your route, with cruise lines including Viking, Marella, Variety and Royal Caribbean all paying a visit. 

Port of Livorno, Italy

The Port of Livorno is considered a major Italian port and is located on the western coast of the beautiful region of Tuscany. The destination is a popular cruise centre, thanks to its close proximity to Pisa and Florence. Both cities are easy to reach by train after a shuttle bus transfer from the cruise terminal. It's then a 15-minute train journey from Livorno to Pisa, or just over an hour to Florence. The port destination is used by cruise lines including P&O, Marella, Royal Caribbean, HAL, Fred. Olsen, Carnival, MSC, Cunard and Regent Seven Seas.

Port of Stockholm, Sweden

The port of Stockholm is one of the busiest in Europe and shortly after arriving ashore, passengers can visit the stunning city from one of two major cruise terminals: Stadsgarden and Frihamnen. The Millesgården is an art museum and sculpture garden located on the island of Lidingö in front of Frihamnen port. More of the city’s famous museums – such as ABBA The Museum, the Viking Museum and the maritime-focused Vasa Museum – are conveniently located on the city's island oasis of Djurgården. NCL, Royal Caribbean, Viking, Regent and Ponant all include itineraries to Stockholm.

Port of Key West, Florida, USA

At the port of Key West in Florida, the main attractions are all in close proximity as the island city is only four miles long by two miles wide. The old town has historic buildings, art galleries, tropical gardens, shops, vintage saloons, restaurants and bars. Also situated there are The Hemingway Home and Museum and the famous Sloppy Joe's bar, which has been in Key West since 1933. Thanks to its year-round tropical climate, cruise passengers can snorkel or dive in the coral reefs and wrecks surrounding the port. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Princess, Celebrity, P&O and Virgin Voyages regularly call here.

Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico

With its central Caribbean location, San Juan cruise port in Puerto Rico is a modern world cruise capital. San Juan offers old world charm and natural wonders. Old San Juan is a historic landmark, with 16th- and 17th-century Spanish-style buildings and the fortresses of San Cristobal and El Morro. There are also many shops, lively cafés and restaurants to visit. Natural beauty lies in San Juan's beaches and verdant El Yunque National Forest. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, P&O, Celebrity, Silversea and Disney Cruise Line all head here.

Port of Sydney, Australia

With iconic sights such as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, Sydney is one of the world’s great port cities. Cruise ships glide past these iconic structures and through the dramatic sandstone passage cliffs of The Heads that lead to and from the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the only Australian city to have two dedicated cruise terminals and thanks to its size, visitors will be able to see plenty there in a day or two. Cruise lines docking here include NCL, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, HAL, Royal Caribbean, Silversea, Oceania and Virgin Voyages.

Port of Venice, Italy

Venice is one of the most stunning cities to cruise into, passing sites such as St Mark’s Square as the ship leaves the Adriatic Sea to enter a narrow entrance called the Porto di Lido, on the way to the piers at the Venetian Lagoon and the Venice Cruise Terminal. However, since 2021 ,  medium and large cruise ships have been banned from Venice's historic centre until further notice, due to environmental concerns. Instead, they currently moor at Marghera, a district of Venice on the Italian mainland. P&O, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Marella, Princess, Azamara, MSC, HAL, Oceania and many others call at the destination.

Port of Kotor, Montenegro

Cruise passengers are in for something special as they enter the port at the Bay of Kotor. The ship wends its way through a 17-mile (27km) waterway offering fjord-like views of mountains and leading to the old walled city of Kotor. The old city dates back to the Middle Ages and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with attractive buildings, churches, squares and stone streets. It is a short walk from the cruise port and has small shops and restaurants to stop off at. The destination is reached by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).

Singapore port container logjam worsens as ships avoid Red Sea

Singapore’s port, already one of the busiest in the world, is facing a sustained period of congestion as vessel diversions to avoid the Red Sea push more container ships to the Asian maritime hub.

The Houthi attacks have reverberated through global supply chains, but the effects are particularly acute in Singapore, which is located on one of the world’s busiest shipping routes linking Europe and the Middle East to China. The growing logjam at the port, a major center for refueling and the redistribution of containers, will result in delays to goods being delivered and will also put more upward pressure on shipping rates.

Singapore’s yard utilization rates, a measure of how busy a container port is, rose to nearly 90% last month, compared with optimum levels of around 70%, according to Jayendu Krishna, a director at Drewry Maritime Services.

There’s a lot of rerouting going on, leading to changes in vessel schedules and a pile-up of transshipment container boxes at certain ports, he said. This is causing a "bunching of ships” at some hubs as wait times become longer and congestion grows, Krishna said.

Container volumes in Singapore totaled 16.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in the first five months of the year, almost 8% higher than the same period in 2023, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. Container lines including CMA CGM had moved more tonnage through the city-state’s port, the authority said.

There are some early signs that container congestion in Singapore is starting to ease this month, according to shipbrokers, which may prevent container pile-ups from worsening further.

There was also increased activity at Malaysian ports last month. Tanjung Pelepas, located just west of the city-state on the Johor Strait, and Klang, near Kuala Lumpur, had record monthly throughput in May.

Conversely, traffic at major Middle Eastern ports has tumbled. Volumes at the major transshipment hub of Salalah in Oman fell by 17% in the first quarter, Drewry data shows.

The snarl-up of containers ships isn’t likely to dissipate anytime soon, and spot rates for vessels are likely to climb even further, HSBC Holdings analysts including Parash Jain said in a note.

"While these inefficiencies are largely centered in the exporting regions in Asia and some transshipment hubs, it will only be a matter of time before these issues relay on to the importing destinations in EU and the U.S.,” they said. "The bull has further to run” for container freight rates, they said.

The waters off Singapore are typically crowded with all manner of ships, and that looks set to intensify in the coming months, as the impact of the rerouting takes time to work its way through the global transport system.

Some 44 containers ships had to wait for four days off the city-state last month, compared with just 14 in January, according to the Drewry data.

The logjams are only emerging now, months after the Red Sea attacks intensified in January, Krishna said. That’s because "there’s always some spare capacity in ports and container yards, so it took time for the Singapore port to reach its maximum utilization level.”
