Mandatory English lessons for Tourist Police officers in Puerto Vallarta
During last Friday’s Building Finance Commission work session, led by Puerto Vallarta Mayor Professor Luis Alberto Michel Rodríguez, who is also the president of the delegation, a proposal to provide free and mandatory English language classes to tourist police officers, and other public servants who are in direct contact with foreign citizens and tourists, was approved by a simple majority.
Another ruling that authorizes providing financial support to community educators who participate in the Alternatives program and the National Council for Educational Promotion (CONAFE) was also approved.
This session was held in collaboration with the Building Commissions for Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology; Public Safety and Transit, and the Tourism and Economic Development departments, whose members gave the green light to the training of public servants. The Tourism and Economic Development Directorate of the Municipality said that they have already made some progress and that the first group of officials can start their courses in March.
Professor Michel said that having police officers and other personnel that directly interact with foreign citizens speak another language (such as English) is an asset and that the investment that could be made in this matter is minimal compared to the utility that it will have when public servants can guide people and disseminate information in our city.
The person in charge of the Directorate of Tourism, Christian Preciado Cázares, and the head of Business Development, Martha Ibarra, explained that there is an agreement with IDEFT Jalisco, for which this preparation in touristic conversational English will have curricular accreditation and recognition before the Ministry of Education.
For this, there is a training classroom that, thanks to the collaboration of some companies, has furniture, a computer, and a projector ready to begin the classes, which will be starting with 15 elements already selected by the Citizen Security Directorate, and funded by resources from the Directorate of Tourism. The course will consist of 50 hours and will be taught in 2 weekly sessions. The municipal dependency also seeks to certify the police officers in attendance to tourism.
At the request of the councilors, the establishment of an agreement with CECATI 63 is being analyzed to provide said training to municipal workers.
Another of the topics approved in the session is the opinion through which it is authorized to provide economic support for community educators who provide their services at the preschool, primary, and secondary levels, in communities in the rural area of Puerto Vallarta.
These are 7 educators who will receive financial support of 3,000 pesos per month per person. Both opinions must be presented in a session of the City Council for final approval by the plenary.

An American woman was found dead in Spain over the weekend — and authorities believe her death was the result of an extreme sexual encounter gone terribly wrong.
The body of the 44-year-old woman, who has not been named publicly, was found in an apartment in the Plaza Enrique Garcia Herrera in Malaga, La Opinión De Malaga reported .
The victim’s 50-year-old husband, who is also American, was arrested in connection with her death, which police believe occurred accidentally in an “intimate context,” sources told the outlet.
The case was initially investigated as gender-based violence, but was upgraded to homicide due to evidence indicating extreme, risky sexual behavior, they added.
The woman’s husband appeared on Monday in the local investigative court, where the judge ordered him held without bail.
The investigation is ongoing.

WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — The sequel turned out to be just as good for Wrexham.
The Welsh team co-owned by actor Ryan Reynolds clinched promotion to the third tier of English soccer thanks to a 6-0 home win over Forest Green on Saturday.
That’s back-to-back promotions for the team since it was thrust into the spotlight following the investment by its Hollywood owners. It is two tiers away from the Premier League.
“This is the ride of our lives,” Reynolds wrote on X , formely Twitter, after the game.
Wrexham needed to both beat Forest Green and see MK Dons and Barrow drop points in order to secure automatic promotion to League One with two rounds to go.
Wrexham’s win was never in doubt as the team was 4-0 up at halftime. MK Dons wasted an early lead in losing at home against Mansfield 4-1, while Barrow lost to Gillingham 3-0. That sparked mass celebrations at Wrexham as fans ran onto the field after the final whistle, despite pre-game warnings from the club urging them to stay in the stands.
Wrexham is second in League Two, four points behind leader Stockport, which also clinched promotion on Saturday. The top three teams are automatically promoted to League One, and fourth-placed MK Dons can no longer catch Wrexham.
Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney bought the little-known club for $2.5 million in 2021.
Last season, they clinched the National League title to get back into the English Football League — the three divisions below the Premier League — for the first time in 15 years. This is the first time in the club’s 159-year history that it has earned promotion in two consecutive seasons.
“A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney,” Reynolds wrote in his social media post. “Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town!”
The team’s journey has been chronicled in the show “Welcome to Wrexham.”

At least six killed and several in critical condition after Westfield shopping centre attack in Sydney
Authorities said they do not know who the suspect is, nor the motive of the attack, but confirmed there is no longer a threat.

Six people have been killed and several are in a critical condition, including a baby, after stabbings at a shopping centre near Bondi Beach in Sydney.
Police said the attacker, believed to be a 40-year-old man, acted alone and was shot dead by an officer who confronted him on her own.
Authorities said the suspect is known to them and his attack is not thought to be terror-related.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre, while an ambulance spokesperson said people were still inside the building.
Police confirmed there is no longer a threat following the attacker's death.
One man at the shopping centre told local news how he helped a nine-month-old girl injured during the attack.
He said: "The baby got stabbed. The mum got stabbed and came over with a baby and threw it at me - I was holding the baby, it looked pretty bad."
The man's brother, also at the scene, said the mother had "a lot of blood [coming] out of her mouth".
Sydney Police confirmed the mother died in hospital following the incident, along with four other women and a man who died in the mall.
Eight people are currently being treated in hospitals around Sydney including the child who is in surgery.
Anthony Cooke, assistant commissioner of New South Wales Police Force, said that a man walked into the centre, left, then returned at 3.20pm (local time) and proceeded through the centre where he "engaged with about nine people".
Mr Cooke added: "A single unit officer, inspector of police, was nearby, attended, [and] went into the centre directed by a range of people.
"She confronted the offender who had moved, by this stage, to level five.
"As she continued to walk quickly behind to catch up with him he turned to face her, raised a knife, she discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased."
The officer conducted CPR on the attacker until the paramedics arrived but he could not be revived.
Mr Cooke said the wounded were taken to hospital, and one of them is a "small child".
On the attacker, New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said: "If in fact it is the person that we believe it is, then we don't have fears for that person holding an ideation - in other words, that it's not a terrorism incident.
"He is known to law enforcement but we are waiting to identify him formally."
A shopper said she thought she was "going to die".
She told ABC News: "I was hiding in the backroom. I was hearing gunshots. It's just the worst thing ever, who does that to people?
"I saw a woman lying on the floor in Chanel.
"I didn't see him properly, I was running. It's just insanity - I wasn't expecting it.
"I thought I was going to die. Every moment was playing through my head, I was so scared."
Waverley Council said on X: "A critical incident has commenced following the shooting of a male at Bondi Junction. Just before 4pm today, emergency services were called to Westfield Bondi Junction following reports of multiple people stabbed. People are urged to avoid the area."
Describing the attacker, one witness said he was "walking really calmly like he was having an ice cream in a park.
"And then he went up the escalators... and probably within about a minute we heard three gunshots," they told ABC TV in Australia.
Witness Roi Huberman, an ABC sound engineer, told the network that he sheltered in a store during the incident.
"And suddenly we heard a shot or maybe two shots and we didn't know what to do," he said. "Then the very capable person in the store took us to the back where it can be locked. She then locked the store and then she then let us through the back and now we are out."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "Tragically, multiple casualties have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones.
"It was also witness to the humanity and heroism of our fellow Australians. Our brave police, our first responders and everyday people they could never have imagined they would face such a moment."
The King released a statement after the incident saying he and the Queen were "utterly shocked and horrified" by the "senseless attack".
He added that their "hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed".
The Prince and Princess of Wales also sent their condolences writing on X: "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others."
Mr Cooke said he had not seen anything like this incident in Sydney before and that "this is a very difficult circumstance".
Westfield shopping centre is to remain closed and will remain a crime scene, police said.

Within the theory and practice of English for Specific Purposes, this study attempted to compare and contrast the teaching of English to police cadets in police colleges and academies in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. The participant police colleges were King Fahd Security College in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait Police College, Qatar Police College, and Dubai Police College. Data was collected through analyzing the policy of these colleges in teaching English to their police cadets as displayed on their websites and in their official documents. The analysis of the results indicated that these police institutions vary in the way they introduce English to their would-be-police officers. Overall, English courses and teachings are not in line with the theory and practice of English for Specific Purposes. These colleges did not base their English teaching on their police cadets' needs and the situations in which they will possibly use English. The results also showe...

When taking into account Palestinian tourism sites, mastering language English for instance is a prerequisite for serving and offering tourism services in tourist places such as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho and Hebron after graduation. In Palestine, English for Specific Purposes especially in hospitality and tourism purposes has not been given much investigation in research. Globally, English language is used as a medium of communication in contexts such as hospitality, travel, and tourism. This study examined how English language is used to prepare tourism and hospitability learners who anticipate serving in Palestinian tourism sites. The data indicated that the learners’ perceptions of the courses offered in English are not consistent with their aspirations and perceived academic English language needs, and their response to how they perceive the importance of English language needs was moderate. Based on these findings, the study suggests restructuring these courses and reconsid...
