Ten weeks since we last checked in at the site of Tour Saint-Gobain in Paris ' La Défense, and progress has been swift, the 38-storey office tower today only awaiting its cap ahead of structural completion. Designed by  Valode & Pistre Architects  for  Generali Group  and  Hines , Tour Saint-Gobain's lattice-work exterior and signature, multi-storey glass cube that will soon adorn the peak of the tower, will eventually combine to make this a standout project for the architecturally-rich area.

Set to be poised above the main tower, the cube will be home to an airy, vegetation-filled observation deck, the base of which can be seen emerging from the current "top" of the structure (below). The cube will give visitors the illusion of floating in a climate controlled greenhouse, the 165-metre tower to provide observers with panoramic views of the city.

Just below the cube, the tower itself will not be devoid of interesting visual cues, the exterior's lattice-work appliqué giving the project a thoroughly modern look. Down below, the tower will meet the street with a large public realm element in the form of a concrete staircase and forecourt with direct pedestrian connections to the local street network.

Tour Saint-Gobain is scheduled for completion by mid-2019, the tower to become the daytime home for 2,200 employees and support staff. Once complete, the project will add to the area's urban vibrancy, this being one of the city's main goals for softening La Défense often harsh, modernist aesthetic and functionality.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated  Database  file and  Forum  thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.

valode & pistre design sky-high sculptural tower within la défense district in paris

valode & pistre has unveiled the ‘tour saint-gobain’ tower, located within the la défense major business district in paris , france . designed as the future showcase for company saint-gobain’s expertise and international image, the tower is an efficient, functional and flexible link that connects the worlds of the la défense esplanade and ring road, with the courbevoie residential areas.

valode & pistre ‘s primary concern was to create a tower that involves and affects people. the architects aimed to evoke emotions through their scultpural design, employing a new dynamic geometry: rhombohedra. the rhombohedron is a cube with faces shaped as diamonds or parallelograms instead of squares or rectangles. with the same height and volume as a normal straight prism, the silhouette soars upwards and the tower stands out, with its variations compelling the interest in this huge tripartite composition. the observer is also touched by the ambiguous graphic play between the horizontal, the framework of floors on the façade, and the oblique, parallel to the upper and lower faces of the rhombohedra.

the tower’s distinct, expressive morphology makes it seem like it is floating above the ground. it is arranged in three sections: the main body which houses the office spaces, the lower section that includes the services, and other premises open to the public, and the upper section which is the ‘plein ciel’ (open sky) space. given the tower’s location on the edge of the slab, alongside the ring road, it allows both main and pedestrian access from the esplanade and another access at ring road level that provides an address on the boulevard along with taxi and bicycle access.

the office area section is an elongated rectangle with a slightly off-centre core, providing varying depths from 7 to 12 m. the geometry and framework of the space is highly flexible, allowing a variation in space planning using more or fewer partitions. the floors located on the top prism include the meeting, communication and reception areas, while a restaurant and a large indoor garden complete the facilities. the office areas offer a panoramic view of the city, and the high window lintels, low apron walls and the limited depth of the spaces provide sufficient natural lighting and encourage a relationship with the surroundings. the office floors have accessible, outdoor gardens that are nevertheless protected from the wind. the main hall, combined with the showroom, opens to the esplanade as a sign of welcome.

the tower has been designed with a focus on environmental concerns, with an array of spatial, architectural and technical solution combination making the tower bioclimatic. reversible radiant ceilings and a low-speed air displacement ventilation system were installed, in teaming up with the very high thermal performance of the façade, in order to reach positive environmentally-friendly results. in addition, rainwater is collected for watering the gardens, and the vegetation naturally helps to cool the glasshouses.

Moscow plane crash: Hero pilot climbed back into the wreckage to call his wife

The hero pilot who safely crash-landed a Russian airliner climbed back into the burning wreckage to call his wife.

Damir Yusupov, 41, was hailed a hero by both the media and the Kremlin after a safely landing an A321 so smoothly on Thursday that just one of the 233 people on board was hospitalized.

Shortly afterwards he told the Russian media: "After the evacuation of passengers I got out, went around the plane, examined the external damage, made sure that everything was at a safe distance.

"I returned to the cockpit and from there called my wife,” he said, according to The Sun .

Yusupov said when one of the plane's engines shut down due to a bird strike he initially hoped to circle Moscow’s Zhukovsky airport and land normally.

He decided to perform the emergency landing moments later when the second engine cut off, leaving him no choice.

Hero pilot carrying 226 tourists lands in cornfield after plane collided with flock of birds

Investigators say 13 people dead in moscow plane fire, torrential rain floods area around moscow's sheremetyevo airport.

Yusupov's feat on Thursday drew comparisons to the 2009 "miracle on the Hudson," when Capt. Chesley Sullenberger safely ditched his plane in New York's Hudson River after a bird strike disabled its engines.

Yusupov told reporters on Friday he "saw a corn field ahead and hoped to make a reasonably soft landing."

State television said the incident was being dubbed the "miracle over Ramensk", the name of the district near Moscow where the plane came down around one kilometre (0.62 miles) from Zhukovsky International Airport.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid praised pilot Damir Yusupov as a "hero," saying he had saved 233 lives, "having masterfully landed a plane without its landing gear with a failing engine right in a corn field."

"We congratulate the hero pilots who saved people's lives," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin would see that the men were quickly given state honours.

"There's no doubt about this. They will be given awards."
