Visiting Robben Island on a tour from Cape Town

Why i wanted to visit robben island.

Whilst my knowledge of apartheid is reasonable thanks to my university degree (in International Politics), nothing can compare to learning and experiencing history first-hand in South Africa.

Fortunately, visiting Robben Island is a straight-forward experience.

Visiting Robben Island on a Tour from Cape Town

Robben Island has had various purposes through its history, which I will more on below. However, more recently, it was made into a museum in 1997 and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.

Robben Island has become a beacon for hope within South Africa, as it is where so many of its most influential political leaders were imprisoned at some point. Robben Island plays a very important role in South Africa’s journey for racial equality and tolerance.

Speaking to South African friends, it is shocking how few have ever been. But most recognised the need to go and to further understand their own country’s history and story. Some of my friends admitted they were due a return trip as they hadn’t visited since school.

We planned our time in Cape Town so that we incorporated visiting Robben Island during a day spent in the city. Visiting Robben Island on a tour from Cape Town was a highlight of our time in South Africa for many reasons.

I’ve written a full guide to visiting Robben Island, so do take a look below and feel free to get in touch with any questions

Allow for around 3.5-4 hours for the entire duration of your visit.

How far in advance do I need to book ahead?

The Experience on Robben Island

What is the tour itinerary on robben island.

Once the ferry has arrived on Robben Island, visitors are directed to waiting buses. Once these are full, these depart one by one. On board is a local guide who will talk you through each of the various heritage sites as you drive by them. Although Robben Island is quite small, it is pleasant to visit the sites by bus as it provides shade from the heat and allows all mobility levels to experience it in the same way.

Entry sign at Robben Island

The first site was a graveyard for those who had died from leprosy. During the mid to late 1800s, lepers were sent here and Robben Island was a leper colony. Only once most the lepers had died was a cure found, where it had previously been thought of as incurable.

The next site is the Lime Quarry, the site where prisoners included Mandela spent most of their days. Our guide told us that forcing the prisoners to spend their days under the baking sun breaking down the rocks was not for any real constructive purpose, but instead to break down their minds and resolve. There were 3,000 or so prisoners on Robben Island during from 1960 to 1991, most of whom were political prisoners, known as South Africa’s freedom fighters. The baddies wanted the prisoners to sit in silence through most of their days so that they couldn’t share the ideas or thoughts.

The Quarry at Robben Island

Since the end of apartheid and Robben Island being used as a prison, Mandela and other prisoners have come back to each lay a rock and you can see this mound at the opening to the quarry.

We also saw the church, where the prisoners visited every Sunday, as well as other buildings and spaces used for various purposes.

Robert Sobukwe’s House

Robert Sobukwe’s house was another place we stopped at. Sobukwe was another of the most well-known political prisoners on Robben Island. He strongly opposed apartheid and founded the Pan Africanist Congress, he was widely feared by the government who sent him to be imprisoned on Robben Island. He led several nationwide protests, however, unfortunately at one of the protests near Johannesburg, police opened fire on the crowd and almost 70 people were killed. Following this he was arrested and blamed for this massacre. Our guide told us that the guards were so worried Sobukwe and his ability to influence and impact the other prisoners with his ideology, they built him a separate guarded house to keep him in solitary confinement. This was located more than one hundred meters away from the Maximum Security Prison cells. His story is a sad one, as the guide told us that when he was finally released, his lived with his family but under house arrest. He finally died of lung cancer, long before it became apparent his positive impact on the end of apartheid and South Africa’s future.

Following this, our tour proceeded to visit the prison where we saw the living quarters, dorm rooms and cells, including Nelson Mandela’s cell. This section of the tour was given by an ex-prisoner and it was incredible to hear their story and experience first-hand.

There was also a brief toilet stop. The toilets are unexpectedly near a small penguin colony, and a famous Cape Town photo frame, with Table Mountain behind.

Do people live on Robben Island today?

Around 100 or so people live here today.

Has Robben Island had any other purposes?

Indeed. During World War 2, Robben Island was chosen as a strategic site to protect the city of Cape Town. This means there was significant construction of artillery batteries, various fortifications and an airstrip. You can see a full timeline of Robben Island’s on their website here: http://www.robben-island.org.za/timeline

The primary use for Robben Island throughout time has been as place for banishment and imprisonment of criminal and political prisoners throughout South Africa’s colonial and apartheid eras. For example, from 1400-1823, the island was home to the indigenous Khoi-Khoi people, who were the first South Africans recorded to be on the island. Robben Island is a vital part of their heritage, as the Khoi-Khoi people were banished and imprisoned here for resisting European colonisation.

In fact, during the 500 year history of Robben Island, the only time it was not used a prison was when it was used for military purposes and as a base, between 1931 and 1960.

What was the tour guide like?

Our guide was around 30 years old, mixed race and a Capetonian. Most crucially, he was completely knowledgeable about every aspect about Robben Island’s 500 year history, as well as balanced in his commentary. He had his audience completely captivated throughout the tour and made the heavy history interesting and relevant for everyone. you meet any ex-prisoners?

Robben Island

Would I meet any ex-prisoners?

Yes, as mentioned – the final segment of the trip is led by an ex-prisoner. We walked around the cells with an ex-political prisoner called Jama Mbatyoti. He had been incarcerated from 1977-1981.  As we moved from room to room, he shared his memories and experiences. He brought the whole experience to life for us and it was a very moving experience.

Robben Island talk with ex-prisoner

We were able to walk around the prison quite freely, including the bathrooms. Finally, we were led to a corridor where he pointed out Nelson Mandela’s cell. One by one, each guest on the tour had the moment to stop and take in where he spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. It was a humbling experience and one I felt we had enough time to slowly take in. It didn’t feel like a rushed experience at all.

Bathroom facilities in one of the prisons on Robben Island

We also saw the courtyard and the small garden that Nelson Mandela tended to, and it was here where he secretly started to draft his autobiography.

Nelson Mandela's gardening plot

Sadly, the number of ex-prisoners is declining as of course, they are growing old and sadly passing away. One day, there will be no ex-prisoners to hear first-hand stories and experiences from, so visit as soon as you can to learn about some of the most important lessons in South African, and global history.

Visiting Robben Island

As you can see, visiting Robben Island on a tour from Cape Town city centre is pretty straight-forward. Spending time wandering through the prison buildings and hearing first-hand from an ex-prisoner gives an authentic understand and experience like no other of apartheid in South Africa.

Robben Island, South Africa: The Complete Guide

how long does robben island tour take

Robben Island

Located in Cape Town 's Table Bay, Robben Island is one of South Africa 's top historical attractions. For centuries it was used as a penal colony, primarily for political prisoners. Although its maximum security prisons have now closed, the island remains famous as the place where former South African president Nelson Mandela was an inmate for 18 years. Many leading members of political parties like the PAC and ANC were imprisoned alongside him.

In 1997 Robben Island was turned into a museum, and in 1999 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It has become an extremely important symbol for the new South Africa, reflecting the triumph of democracy over apartheid and the ongoing journey towards racial tolerance. Now tourists can visit the prison on a Robben Island tour , led by ex-inmates with firsthand experiences of what life in the prison was like.

Getting There

Robben Island is located several kilometers offshore and all tours start with a ferry ride from Cape Town's V&A Waterfront . The journey takes around 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to admire spectacular views of Cape Town and Table Mountain and to look for the whales, dolphins, penguins and fur seals that inhabit Table Bay. The crossing can be quite rough, so those that suffer from seasickness are advised to take tablets. If the weather gets very bad, the ferries won't sail and tours are canceled.

Touring the Island

The trip begins with an hour-long bus tour of the island. During this time, your guide will tell you all about its history and ecology, including its use as a military base and leper colony. You'll get off the bus at the limestone quarry where Nelson Mandela and other prominent ANC members spent many years doing hard labor. At the quarry, the guide will point out the cave that doubled as the prisoners' bathroom.

It was in this cave that some of the more educated prisoners taught others how to read and write by scratching in the dirt. History, politics and biology were amongst the subjects taught at this "prison university" and it is said that a good part of South Africa's current constitution was written there. It was the only place that prisoners were able to escape the watchful eyes of the guards.

The Maximum Security Prison

After the bus tour, the guide will lead you to the maximum security prison where more than 3,000 political prisoners were held from 1960 to 1991. If your guide on the bus wasn't an ex-political prisoner, your guide for this part of the tour certainly will be. It is incredibly humbling to hear stories of prison life from someone who experienced it firsthand.

The tour starts at the entrance of the prison where the men were processed, given a set of prison clothes and assigned a cell. The offices of the prison include a prison court and a censorship office where every letter sent to and from the prison was read. The tour also includes a visit to the courtyard where Mandela later tended a small garden. It was here that he secretly started writing his famous autobiography Long Walk to Freedom .

Experiencing the Cells

On the tour, you will be shown into at least one of the communal prison cells. Here, you can see the prisoners' bunk beds and feel the pitifully thin mats and blankets. In one block, there is an original sign displaying the prisoners' daily menu. In a prime example of apartheid racism, food portions were assigned to prisoners based on their skin color.

You will also be taken to the single cell in which Mandela lived for a time, although prisoners were routinely moved for security reasons. Although communication between the communal cell blocks was forbidden, you will also hear from your guide how prisoners came up with ingenious ways in which to continue their fight for freedom from within the prison walls.

Practical Information

The entire tour lasts approximately 3.5 hours including the ferry trip to and from Robben Island. Tickets can be booked online or purchased directly from ticket counters at the Nelson Mandela Gateway on the V&A Waterfront. The tour costs R360 per adult (approximately $25) and R200 per child (approximately $15). Tickets often sell out, so it's advisable to book in advance or make arrangements with a  local tour operator .

The Robben Island ferry sails four times a day from the Nelson Mandela Gateway and departure times change according to the season. Make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of your scheduled departure because there's an interesting exhibit in the waiting hall that gives a good overview of the island's history. Remember that although the guides on Robben Island will never ask for  tips , it is customary in Africa to reward good service.

About Tour of Robben Island

Declared a World Heritage Site a tour of Robben Island takes 3 and a half hours and lasts a lifetime in your mind. The ferry ride approaching Robben Island and returning to V&A Waterfront across Table Bay displays a spectacular view over the city, Table Mountain and its coastline.

The island environment is a natural haven to a wide variety of wildlife and a manmade reminder of South Africa's history. "There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered." Nelson Mandela

Robben Island Tour: South Africa's Most Significant Historic Site

One of the most notable historic site in South Africa, hands-down is Robben Island. Situated in Table Bay, Cape Town, the island was used as a apartheid-era period

Visiting South Africa is an overall enriching travel experience, made more so by the country's fascinating history. Along with intriguing wildlife safaris , sun-kissed beaches, and breath-taking views, South Africa has a rich story to tell - of oppression, racism, and the apartheid, and how the country overcame it all to embrace diversity of its people and their culture.

One of the most notable historic site in South Africa, hands-down is Robben Island. Situated in Table Bay, Cape Town , the island is not a scene of palm trees and sandy beaches. Used as a apartheid-era prison, its attraction lies in the horrific history it holds. Late Nelson Mandela, the former South African president spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment here with many other political prisoners. Now a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Robben Island tour is one of the must-do activities when on a trip to South Africa.

Quick Facts

A brief history.

The Khoikhoi people were the first known inhabitants of Robben Island. Having resisted colonisation, from as early as 1510, many Khoikhoi were later banished or imprisoned on the island. Although Robben Island served many functions over the centuries, including that of an infirmary, sanatorium and military base, it has primarily been used to isolate and house political prisoners.

Prisoners on Robben Island were treated atrociously having been subjected to hard labour, meagre food rations and heavy beatings for minor infractions. In this way, Robben Island was used as a means of punishment and oppression, most notably during the darkest years of the battle against apartheid.

Today, having defeated the apartheid regime, Robben Island is a symbol of humanity's ability to triumph over evil. There are still many countries in the world where apartheid, racism and other discriminatory laws prevail. When visiting Robben Island, and bearing witness to the violence of apartheid, knowing that South Africa is now a free and democratic country gives hope to those who still battle discrimination in their every-day lives.

Planning the visit

In order to visit Robben Island, you will have to head to Cape Town , situated on the country's west coast. Cape Town is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations offering excellent hospitality and brilliant sightseeing opportunities. Robben Island is a 30-min ferry ride away from Cape Town, departing from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. Visitors must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

Ideally tickets for Robben Island tours should be booked at least two weeks in advance as they tend to sell out quickly. Tickets can be booked at the ticket counter at the V&A Waterfront or can also be purchased online through a ticket booking website. You can also make arrangements through a local tour operator.

Buying packaged tour to Robben Island from a tour operator doesn't only take out the hassle of ticket booking from your itinerary, but also comes with added value, such as hotel transfers. Packages often include Cape Town city tours and other related destinations, e.g. township tour.

Robben Island in Cape Town

A Robben Island tour ticket consists of a ferry ride to and from the island, a bus tour of the island, and a tour of the maximum-security prison. When leaving Cape Town for Robben Island make a point of catching the panoramic views of the "mother city" from the ferry.

Disembarking at Murray's Bay harbour, you will enjoy a bus tour of the island. A designated tour guide will point out important buildings and sites explaining some of the islands history en route.

The tour takes in many important historic sites including the graveyard for leprosy sufferers, the lime and bluestone quarries where prisoners worked and a cave which served as one of the few places where prisoners could speak in private. Legend has it that South Africa's current constitution came into being in this cave.

Finally, the maximum-security area where the legendary freedom fighters were incarcerated will be explored. The prison tour will be conducted by a former political prisoner who has first-hand experience of the conditions under which South Africa's political prisoners were incarcerated. The most significant feature of a Robben Island tour is visiting the cell in which Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The tour takes approximately 4 hours including the ferry to and from Robben Island.

How to get there

If you have booked a local Robben Island tour package, it may include hotel transfers and accommodation. If not, and assuming that you are staying in Cape Town you could take a bus, Uber or taxi to the V&A Waterfront, the ferry departure point for all Robben Island tours.

Good to know

  • The ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island can get choppy. If you suffer from seasickness, you should take nausea medication about an hour before departure.
  • The tour involves some walking. Comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended.
  • There are instances in which tours are cancelled due to bad weather. If you have booked a tour in advance, it is advisable to call ahead to confirm that the tour is on. In these cases, tours will be rescheduled or refunded.

A trip to Robben Island is well worth the time and effort. It promises to be a once in a lifetime experience. Not only will you have an opportunity to examine South Africa's past and explore the insidious nature of discrimination in the historic periods of both colonisation and apartheid, you will also leave with renewed hope in humanity's potential for reconciliation, forgiveness and change.

Robben Island tour review from Cape Town

October 12, 2021 | Posted in: South Africa

It was a sunny day when we headed to the Cape Town Waterfront to catch the boat to Robben Island for our half-day Robben Island tour . We'd visit the place which once held prisoners of the Apartheid regime in South Africa – Nelson Mandela being the most famous among them.

half-day robben island tour

The history of Robben Island – a very brief summary

In the 17th century, the Dutch settlers were the first to hold political prisoners on Robben Island. The Brits followed their lead a century later. Around that time, the island also got its own whaling station, a leper colony and an animal quarantine station. Murray's Bay Harbour, the location of the former whaling station, is the spot where visitors now disembark from the Robben Island ferries.

In the middle of the 19th century, Robben Island was home to those who weren't wanted in everyday society: the “mentally ill”, the homeless, alcoholics, and prostitutes with sexually transmittable diseases. They were kept and treated there in rudimentary conditions until 1931.

At that point, Robben Island became a military base and it was used as such until after the Second World War. Visitors who tour Robben Island today can still spot some of the fortifications and artillery batteries.

In 1961, Robben Island regained its function as a prison when the South African Apartheid regime started using the island to “stow away” political dissidents, with the most famous ones being Nelson Mandela and current South African president Jacob Zuma .

Robben Island became a National Monument in 1996 and is protected as a National Heritage Site up to one mile into the ocean surrounding it. In 1999, it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nelson Mandela and Robben Island

Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected president of South Africa and the first black nationwide head of state. But before he became president, he was an anti-Apartheid revolutionary and his rebellion against the white minority government lead him to be incarcerated for a total of 27 years.

history of mandela in robben island

Contrary to what many think, Mandela “only” spent the first 18 of those 27 years in the Robben Island jail. There, he stayed in a single cell in the Maximum Security Prison so that he wouldn't be able to influence other prisoners too much. That cell is now one of the Robben Island attractions for visitors.

Nelson Mandela was released from Robben Island in 1982, only to be brought over to Pollsmoor Prison, another Maximum Security Facility. In 1988, the then 70-year-old Mandela was moved to the much more comfortable Victor Verster Prison where he stayed in a house and had his own cook.

One year later, F.W. de Klerk replaced “Pik” Botha as state president. While Botha had always defended racial segregation, De Klerk recognized the regime was unsustainable. He sat together with Mandela and in February 1990, Mandela was released and all formerly banned political parties were legalized.

robben island facts

After his release, he became president of the African National Congres (ANC) and continued conversations with the government and is now also in talks with the international community.

Tensions remained and talks didn't exactly go smoothly, but in 1994, South Africa finally got its first democratic elections. The ANC won with 63% of the votes and Mandela was elected president, which he would remain until 1999. He remained active both nationally and internationally but announced his retreat from the public scene in 2004, suffering from declining health.

In 2011 he was hospitalized and after two years of struggling with a respiratory infection, he died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95.

Half-day Robben Island tour review

The ferry to robben island.

One of the exhibition halls was also the security hall. Before we could get on the boat, we had to have our bags checked and needed to go through a detector.

Then followed the obligatory photo which we could, of course, buy when we got back. This had me worrying that the whole experience would be too commercial, too touristy, but luckily that wasn't the case.

The Robben Island boat trip lasts about an hour and can get a bit shaky. On our way there we got lucky as our ferry was a big modern boat where you could both sit on the deck and inside. There even was a bar and a toilet for us to use.

On the way back, though, we got a much less fancy boat where we couldn't sit inside and as it was a lot smaller as well, we could feel the waves much harder.

So tip: if you easily get seasick, take a tablet before boarding.

Another tip I can give is to stay outside and choose to sit either twice at the front or twice at the back of the boat if you can. That way, you can get some cool pictures of Robben Island when approaching (or going away again) and some nice shots of Cape Town in the distance as you leave the Waterfront (or get back).

Lastly, it can get pretty cold on the boat if you decide to stay outside, especially because of the winds. Make sure to bring a jacket or at least a warm sweater even if it's nice and warm that day.

The Robben Island museum tour

robben island photos

Luckily, we both felt alright, but I can imagine that if you get seasick and then immediately have to jump on the bus, that's not much fun.

Anyway, onto the buses we went.

Each bus had a tour guide who told us about the different places on the island while we drove around. You can't actually walk around the island yourself. We made stops at the leper graveyard, the lime quarry where the prisoners had to perform hard labor, prison buildings, former army bunkers and a few other places.

images of robben island

This bus tour took about 45 minutes with a small break to go to the toilet and buy some snacks at a tiny shop.

After that, we met with a former Robben Island prisoner who would be our tour guide for the next part of our visit.

He showed us around some of the buildings and – of course – pointed out in which cell Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned.

The buildings we went into still looked the same way they did when they were still part of the functioning Robben Island Prison, but some rooms had gotten big information panels to tell us a bit more about what happened there.

robben island interesting facts

One room also displayed a list of Robben Island political prisoners who died at the Maximum Security Prison and whose families have not yet been officially informed. With the list up, the museum hopes to find someone who has ties with one of the deceased.

This part of the visit I too felt was a bit rushed. There was no time to read all of the information panels, to properly have a look inside all of the rooms and definitely not to just be there and let it all sink in.

As soon as the Robben Island prison tour was over, we had to walk back to the boat.

Should you visit Robben Island?

robben island images

Despite the fact that I felt the whole experience was a bit rushed, I think the importance of Robben Island in the history of South Africa is too big to not take the tour. I didn't feel like we had the best visit we could have had, but I'm still glad we went.

The Robben Island tour guides are very knowledgeable and were happy to answer all of our questions. They gave us a good summary of the history of the prison and the most important political prisoners who stayed there.

Practical information on how to go to Robben Island

bookings for robben island tours

Where to buy Robben Island tickets You can buy your Robben Island tour tickets online or from the Robben Island ticket office at the Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront from where the ferries leave. There's just one ticket which includes the ferry ride and the Robben Island tour price.

Robben Island tour prices are the same whether you book online or buy from the ticket office. Tickets for Robben Island were R340 for adults and R190 for youngsters under 18 when we visited. At the time, that was about €21/$25 and €12/$14. The prices might have gone up since.

It's also possible to schedule a private tour. This requires calling/emailing ahead to make arrangements.

Another option is to combine your tour of Robben Island with a township tour to create a full day program.

Note: the boats were already pretty full when we visited end of August, which was still low season. If you plan on visiting in high season, I highly recommend you buy your tickets in advance as the tours do sell out.

robben island bookings online

Robben Island ferry times In low season, ferries leave from The Nelson Mandela Gateway at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. In high season, starting September 1, there's a last ferry at 3 p.m.

Ferries and tours run seven days a week weather conditions permitting. If it's stormy, a ferry may get canceled. If that happens, you're entitled to a refund upon showing your ticket and proof of identification.

The access gate to the boat closes 10 minutes before departure and it's asked that passengers are on-site at least 30 minutes before the ferry leaves. If you miss the boat because you're late, you won't get a refund.

While the official website says that the trip from Cape Town to Robben Island lasts between 30 minutes and an hour, it took us twice about an hour, each time in a different boat. The total distance from Robben Island to Cape Town is around 7 miles or 11 km and the boats mostly go in a straight line.

Robben Island tour duration You'll spend a little less than two hours on the ferries and about an hour and a half on the island.

Taking photos of Robben Island It's permitted to bring a personal camera to Robben Island, but you're not allowed to bring a tripod or take photos for commercial purposes.

Don't forget travel insurance

Plan for the best, prepare for the worst. Travel insurance has you covered in case (part of) your trip gets canceled, you get sick or hurt abroad, and sometimes even when your electronics break or get stolen. I always make sure I'm covered every trip I go on.

Don't have travel insurance yet? Check out SafetyWing. They offer super flexible plans that you can even sign up for while you're already on your trip. On top of that, they were the first travel insurance to cover COVID, and when I got COVID, they reimbursed all of my expenses without making a fuss. Good article Sofie! Informative and thorough. Unfortunately, I got very distracted by all the ads throughout the article. I don’t mind the ones to the side of the article but so many in the middle was very distracting.

Hey Jennifer,

Thanks for your comment and for the feedback. I really appreciate that! Can you let me know if you read the article on your phone or on a laptop? I’ve hesitated to put ads on the blog for a long time. The truth is that the income they generate allows me to create more content independently and invest more in the blog to make improvements which is why I’ve been trying them out over the last couple of months.

I think so but I’d check the official website to make sure :)

Its sad that I had the same experience, the tour was rushed and the information provided seemed structured not no offend anyone. When I left there I was so angry/annoyed by the fact that so much information has been omitted or they did not tell us. As i left the Island, I felt like the whole history was not as bad as they say based on the tour. the only person who had passion about the history was our bus tour guide. the ex-political prisoner’s story did not make sense. he claimed that his eye sight was affected by lime mining which stopped even before he was arrested.

Your articles are very informative and helpful, thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the comment!

Candice Christian says

Are we allowed to take our own drinks and snacks with, is there a restaurant or place to purchase things on the island?

There was a small shop on the island for snacks and drinks but you can also take your own.

How long does the tour take? On the internet it says 3,5 to 5 hours. That's quite a big difference... We need to know precisely as can only book the tour on the day we leave and obviously we need to be at the airport on time.

how long does robben island tour take

Hello! The duration of the captivating Robben Island tour can vary. Online, it's mentioned as 3.5 to 5 hours, influenced by factors like tour type and exploration depth. how long does robben island tour take

I would say 4 hours max a lot depends on people asking questions and waiting for ferries if you manage to go enjoy

how long does robben island tour take

Hi there, as mentioned above the tour is indeed around 3.5 hours long.including ferry trip- I would highly recommend to book in advance online via the official Robben Island museum webpage. There are 3 tours per day - 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00. You should aim to get to the departure point a good 30 mins before departure. The tour is weather dependant and may be cancelled due to rough seas. Once on the Island, the tour starts with a guided bus tour of the main sites of the Island and then finishes with a viewing of Nelson Madela's cell plus a talk from a former political prisoner, who was incarcerated at the Island. This is certainly a worthwhile tour to do !

how long does robben island tour take

It took around 3,5 hrs - we had nicely weather and no delays at all. It is very well organized. Arriving with the boat, the bus tour, tour and explanations and than back on boat. But as some other said, depends on weather conditions and off course the traffic you had than to the airport. Once 12 km to our hotel from V&A took as more than an hour.

how long does robben island tour take

I would definitely allow the three and a half hours minimum . I left on the 9 am ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway in the V&A at 9am. The previous two days ferry’s had been cancelled because of high seas . My tour was actually cut short as the bad weather siren sounded whist we were in the island and we were rushed back to the ferry’s so there was no time to browse in the gift shop before leaving .

how long does robben island tour take

It is about 3.5 hours long.

You’ll catch the ferry over - weather permitting, bus around the island, back on the ferry to the mainland.a

Those you travel over with on the ferry will be on the same bus and ferry back.

We did the afternoon tour and felt it was quite rushed.

how long does robben island tour take

We left at 9am on the dot and arrived back at the terminal just before 12:30. The afternoon tour leaves at 1pm. The tours do not operate when the seas are rough. We met a number of people who had their tours cancelled.

how long does robben island tour take

Robben Island is reached by ferry from Cape Town. Depending on the weather and the specific boat, the ride out to the island can take half an hour on the short end and up to an hour on the long end. Same for the ride back to Cape Town. In between is your stay on the island, which begins with a bus tour around the island, followed by a walking tour of the Maximum Security Prison facility (including Nelson Mandela’s cell), led by guides who are former political prisoners of the facility. Between the ferry rides and the tour, you should count on spending at least three and a half hours “door-to-door,” i.e., from the V&A waterfront to the island and back to the V&A. On our visit last month, we took the 11 am ferry out and the 2 pm ferry back to Cape Town, and we were seated for lunch at a nearby restaurant on the waterfront shortly after 2:30 pm. Ferries leave the waterfront at 9 am, 11 am, and 1 pm daily depending on weather. (Rough seas will force cancellations, especially of later-in-the-day tours.) Hope that helps.

how long does robben island tour take

it took us a little over 4 hours.

First you have to get to the departure point early (kind of like getting on a plane). Then there is the boat ride, a bus tour, and then the guided tour of the prision before you get back on the boat. So there are a lot of moving parts.

But the overall tour is very interesting with the actual tour of the prision by former inmates is very good.

There is really no way for you to control how fast you can do the tour.

Hi there, the ferry left Cape Town dock at 9 am and returned at 1 pm, for the afternoon tour. Hope this helps.

how long does robben island tour take

The tour to Robben Island will take 4 hours. This all includes ferry journey 40 mins, bus tour round the small island when get there, then a tour of the ex prison. Ferry back.

Hope this helps.

how long does robben island tour take

You will need to spare close to 5 hours from V & A Harborfront. The actual tour of the island is divided into 2 parts, which are approximately 1 hour each - guided bus tour followed by a guided tour of the cells with a former political prisoner. You may need at least 30 minutes on the island on your own. The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes each way. You also need to consider additional time of 30 minutes each in waiting at both the terminals, to get into the boat. I would not recommend you visiting Robben Island on your last day in Cape Town, simply because if the sea swell conditions are rough, then the boat Trip can get canceled and you may not even get the refund. It is practical to plan Robben Island visit on Day 1 in Cape Town, so that in the event of rough sea conditions, you may be able to visit the same on any of the following days and all other itineraries could be swapped. When my family visited Robben Island, we had planned it for Day 1, but could visit only on Day 2. Even on our Day 3 in Cape Town, sea conditions were rough and all boat trips to Robben Island were cancelled. So we were fortunate to visit Robben Island during our 3 day visit in Cape Town.

Declared a World Heritage Site, the 3.5 hour eye opening tour illuminates the country’s tortured history and once prison to its most formidable political heroes, which include Nelson Mandela. The ferry ride departs from the luxurious V&A Waterfront and provides a breathtaking view of the city and Table Mountain in its backdrop. Helicopter and private tours can also be accommodated for more discerning travellers. The island is home to a wide variety of fauna and expertly guided by ex-political prisoners that give chilling experienced tours across the island and the in-house museum.

Highlights of this harrowing tour include Nelson Mandela’s cell, where South Africa’s greatest known statesman was harshly imprisoned during his incarceration. This is also the focal point of the tour for many people. Explore the limestone quarry where prisoners would toil in the raging sun for hours, breaking up rocks in this carefully patrolled area was just a mindless way to keep prisoners occupied. A vast graveyard on the island houses many prisoners who were taken by an epidemic, and further back in history to those who succumbed to leprosy. There are various places of worship including a green domed mosque and the old Garrison church. During these harrowing times of struggle there was always the refuge of faith.  A tour of Robben Island, once a maximum security prison, is a fascinating window into the torments of the past.

Description:

It provides visitors with a snapshot of the turbulent history of South Africa and takes a look at how far the country has come since the brutal apartheid rule.

Our township and Robben Island tour is highly educational and invaluable. It exposes the severe conditions that communities endured and showcases the strength and bravery of the people who fought for freedom and equality during one of the worst periods in South Africa’s history.

Places you will visit

District Six

The historic township of District Six was once an impoverished but lively community of some 60 000 predominantly-Coloured people. It was originally established to house freed slaves, merchants and laborers who worked to build the city center.

In the late 1960s, the community’s lives were torn apart when they were forcibly removed to live in the desolate Cape Flats during the apartheid era. The rich cultural life with its narrow alleys and crowded apartments are now nothing more than a memory and the land stands vacant and neglected.

Langa was formally established in 1927 in terms of the Urban Area Act and is one of the oldest townships in South Africa. The original settlement developed in 1919 after the first wave of the Spanish Flu in the Cape highlighted the appalling conditions in which Black people were living rough near the highway.

Langa was the epicenter of resistance during the turbulent apartheid years and many key political events in the Cape played out from the impoverished township. Today, Langa has a thriving business center, warm and welcoming community and a rich cultural heritage. The name Langa means ‘sun’.

Joe Slovo informal settlement

Joe Slovo is an informal settlement within Langa township. It was named after former anti-Apartheid activist, Joe Slovo. It’s home to over 20 000 residents and is one of the largest informal settlements in South Africa.

Bonteheuwel

Bonteheuwel was the first Coloured, state-rental township established in Cape Town. It was set up to house people being forcibly removed from District 6 and Claremont under the Group Areas Act. The community were housed in simple ‘matchbox’ houses with a tin roof.

The township is located in the Cape Flats which is a barren, sand-blown area located just inland of the coastline. Bonteheuwel has been upgraded since the fall of the apartheid regime but it remains a very poor community that’s bursting at the seams. Many of its residents still live in shacks made of corrugated iron and wood.

Gugulethu is a vast township that’s home to a predominantly Black community. It was established in the 1960s to ease the overcrowding in Langa and Blacks who were forcibly removed from Windermere. The latter was re-classified a Coloured area. At the time, Black residents were not allowed to live in the city of Cape Town under apartheid ruling.

Gugulethu is a contraction of ‘igugu lethu’ which is the Xhosa word for ‘our pride’. It’s nicknamed ‘Gugs’ by the locals. Today, Gugulethu is still a deeply impoverished township but it’s community is lively, warm and welcoming.

Robben Island

Robben Island is a South African National Heritage Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The living museum serves as a reminder of the brutality, hostility, prejudice and injustices of the apartheid system that existed in South Africa in the 20th century, from 1948 until the early 1990s. It was famously the home of the great Nelson Mandela and fellow struggle veterans who were incarcerated on the island for crimes against the state.

Morning tour: 08h30-12h30

Your tour guide takes you to the 5 largest townships in Cape Town which are located about 15 kilometers from the city center. At each, you’re introduced to people in the local community, hear stories of their past and experience what life is like for them today. Guests are encouraged to interact rather than spectate to truly appreciate the rich social culture of the different communities.

Afternoon tour: 12h30- 17h00

We make our way to the V&A Waterfront at the historic Cape Town harbour for a short lunch and refreshments. The Robben Island tour departs at 12h50 from the Robben Island Museum Gateway.

A ferry takes you 9-kilometres across Table Bay to Robben Island where a former prisoner meets you and takes you on a fascinating tour of the maximum security prison and surrounding areas. We return to the V&A Waterfront where you can stay on for an evening of fun entertainment or go back to your accommodation.

how long does robben island tour take

How long will the entire tour take including ferry trip? I can start early in the morning, but want to ensure i catch my 6:30pm flight. Can do solo or with a tour thanks !

how long does robben island tour take

The beautiful relaxing ferry ride was probably about 20-25 mins. Once on the island the tour guide (which is a former inmate!) takes about 45 mins to walk you through the prison, show you Nelson Mandela's cell ect. Then there's also a short 20 mins bus ride to see some of the island. It shouldn't take more than 3-4hours at the most, unless you do one of those larger tours (30-36 people). That's why I chose 'Go Touchdown Travel & Tours' because the largest group they have is 6 people per luxury van. The tour included ALL the meals & ALL excursions, worth every penny & every minute. Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I just didn't see this email. Happy travels! Don't miss this World Heritage Site! It's amazing!

how long does robben island tour take

The whole trip takes around 4 hours - there is a Mandella Museum on the Waterfront were you can book. I'm not sure what times the trips start but i guess no earlier than 9am.

No independent traveller is allowed on the Island as its all organised including tour of the prison.

If you have the time its well worth it.

how long does robben island tour take

As mentioned by the other visitors, you can leave early and do the whole tour within 4 hours. Once on the island you stay with the people on that boat and even get a bus trip to a remote part of the island with stunning views of Cape Town. Well worth the trip, do not miss it.

how long does robben island tour take

You can easily do the ferry round trip and the island tour in about a half day.

I would allow 4 hours. Approx 45 minutes for the ferry (each way), and two hours on Robben Island is sufficient. It is not a big island.

Robben Island is reached by ferry from Cape Town. Depending on the weather and the specific boat, the ride out to the island can take half an hour on the short end and up to an hour on the long end. The tour to Robben Island will take 4 hours. This all includes ferry journey 40 mins, bus tour round the small island when get there, then a tour of the ex prison. Ferry back.

how long does robben island tour take
