50 Cent Announces the Final Lap Tour: 'You've Waited Long Enough'

The tour will kick off on July 21 in Salt Lake City and celebrates the 20th anniversary of Get Rich or Die Tryin'

final lap tour

Get ready to feel like you're back "In Da Club" because 50 Cent is going on tour!

Earlier this week, the "Candy Shop" rapper, 47, announced that he will embark on a global tour to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

The Final Lap Tour will kick off on July 21 in Salt Lake City and the European leg will kick off on September 28 in Amsterdam. Additional dates will be announced for Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe.

"You've waited long enough! THE FINAL LAP TOUR celebrating GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' – 20 YEARS LATER," he wrote on Instagram Thursday, in part.

The rapper is set to perform his fan-favorite hits along with tracks that haven't been performed live in decades. The tour will also hit that sweet hip-hop nostalgia with featured guests Busta Rhymes and Jeremih.

Fans can register for a verified fan presale now through Sunday. Those who are selected to receive an access code will be able to participate in the presale on May 10. Limited tickets will be sold during a general sale starting May 12 on Ticketmaster.com .

Earlier this year, the "21 Questions" rapper revealed that he is turning the 2002 film 8 Mile — which is a semi-autobiographical take on Eminem 's life — into a TV show during an appearance on the BigBoyTV .

"I'm gonna bring his 8 Mile to television," he revealed, adding that Eminem, 50, is on board to assist with the show's production.

"It's gonna be big. I'm working. I ain't got no duds. I'm batting 100," the rapper said after being asked about the show. "I think it should be there for his legacy because it's important to me that they understand it."

According to the rapper, the project will provide a "backstory" to the film and show Eminem's younger years. He also expressed a desire for the show to share Eminem's story with a new audience.

Meanwhile, the rapper made a surprise appearance during the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance with Dr. Dre , Eminem, Mary J. Blige , Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg .

50 Cent Celebrates His Legacy With An Outstanding Hip-Hop Spectacle On "The Final Lap" Tour

With performances from Jeremih and Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent's The Final Lap tour celebrates an unmatched 20-year tenure in hip-hop.

50 Cent Performs At Ball Arena

In 2003, 50 Cent emerged as a tyrant in hip–hop with the release of Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ . Already established as a rebel in his own right, the industry blacklisted him prior to its release. A deal with Columbia Records fell through. Meanwhile, songs like “How To Rob” and “Ghetto Quran” established 50 Cent as a forceful MC that wouldn't hold his sharp tongue against heavyweights. Although his career hit a brick wall, his resilience and hunger caught the attention of Dr. Dre and Eminem. And maybe without those two, we wouldn’t be celebrating one of the greatest hip-hop albums 20 years later.

The Final Lap tour appears to be 50 Cent’s final full-fledged trek on the road. The past decade hasn't seen him releasing much music but his television empire has grown exponentially. Marking the 20th anniversary of Get Rich Or Die Tryin ’ and coinciding with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, The Final Lap tour has been nothing short of a spectacle; a time capsule that revisits 20 years of heat, from defining singles found on his chart-topping debut and sophomore releases to deep cuts that only his day-one fans can appreciate. With opening acts Pressa, Jeremih, and Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent celebrates his own contributions to the culture.

The opening acts all hold a place in 50 Cent’s heart to some capacity. The connection to Pressa seems to have developed more recently. Pressa’s appearance on stage, alongside WhyG and Bundog, suggests that 50 Cent’s cooking up something in the 6ix. Tony Yayo hasn't shied away from expressing his appreciation for BunDog and Pressa in recent times, either. However, it strongly indicates that 50 Cent and Tony Yayo have taken the budding Toronto star under his wing. It's an impeccable feat for Pressa, who has the bragging rights of touring with 50 Cent and Drake.

Jeremih’s Return

There might not be another R&B artist whose influence is as understated as Jeremih. The Chicago-born’s catalog speaks for itself but in the past few years, his presence hasn’t been as consistent. A serious and highly publicized bout with COVID-19 left him re-learning how to walk. Three years later, he made his triumphant comeback to the stage. His set brought fans through a decade-plus-worth of hits that sent a wave of nostalgia through the crowd.

Backed by a DJ and two scantily-dressed pole dancers, Jeremih’s strain of futuristic stripper-friendly R&B anthems received its proper visual accompaniment. Jeremih’s sheer presence took command of the Bell Centre. Through each song, the crowd’s enthusiasm grew, eventually building up to songs like “Oui,” “Planez,” and of course, “Birthday Sex.” After not being on the road for a few years, Jeremih’s catalog shines from night to night. He's opening up in front of an audience of hardcore hip-hop fans. Even so, his sultry and airy vocals take control of the room.

Busta Rhymes & Spliff Starr Set The Stage Ablaze

With a career spanning 30 years, Busta Rhymes’ is the definition of a timeless act. When he accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 BET Awards, he admitted that he never had a desire to be a solo artist while a member of Leaders Of The New School. It’s ironic, considering that his star power shone brighter than any one of his group mates. Busta Rhymes and Spliff Starr’s live performance remains one of hip-hop’s greatest acts by a landslide. Without gimmicks, the strength of Busta’s hits, bolstered by his chemistry and synchronicity with Spliff Starr, make for a dynamic performance. Busta said it best: “We don’t need no special effects. We are the special effects.”

Busta’s dramatic intro kicks off with a WWE-like monologue, courtesy of Spliff Starr. Busta’s throne rotates as he joins his hypeman with high energy with M.O.P.’s “Ante Up (Remix).” The coordination between the two boils down to the details, with choreographed moves executed throughout the set.

Busta Rhymes’ grip on the rap game from the late 90s to the 2000s was on full display. He went through classics like the funky, "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See." Later, he'd demand the women serenade him with Mariah Carey 's hook on the uber-sensual, “I Know What You Want." Of course, it wouldn't be a Busta show without performing "Break Your Neck."

Although the last bit of his set felt abrupt, it became more personal. Busta and Spliff Starr would dive into records, some unreleased, before cutting them off before the hook came in. For example, Busta began performing "Touch It" and cut off the record before reaching the hook. The reason? He's afforded that right through his 30+ year tenure in hip-hop.

Still, it’s quite clear that one of Busta’s most mesmerizing moments as an MC only occurred within the past 12 years. He still raps his verse on Chris Brown ’s “Look At Me" without skipping a beat. It's truly a testament to a man who has mastered his craft. At 51 years old, Busta Rhymes's breath control is giving every MC in the game a run for their money. Before Busta left the stage, he had already shown us exactly why he’s feared in the Verzuz space .

50 Cent Revisits His Heyday

50 Cent’s assumed the role of an elder statesman in hip-hop these days. His proximity to the music industry has largely consisted of the mentorship he provides to the younger generation. However, 50 Cent's The Final Lap tour almost feels like a bid farewell for a titan in the rap industry. Joined by Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda as his faithful hypemen, 50 Cent implemented the precise choreography of a pop artist to bring fans through a journey of his greatest hits.

The elaborate stage setup included an extended platform that split the floor seats. Behind him were screens plastered from the top to the bottom of the stage. Joined by a DJ and a full band, who performed from an elevated platform, as well as a whole dance squad, 50 Cent created a Vegas-like atmosphere, where the lights, confetti, and pyrotechnics amplified the nostalgia of his unmatched run in the early 2000s. The screens behind them amplified the feeling of the East Coast as animated replicas of New York brownstone buildings and the city skyline displayed through records like “I Get Money” and “Hustler’s Ambition”

Although a celebration of the 20-year anniversary of his debut album, 50 Cent proved that his career didn’t necessarily phase out following his sales battle with Kanye West when Curtis dropped. He went across anthems on GRODT, The Massacre , Curtis , and even a few records from the past few years, whether “I’m The Man” or “The Woo,” where he pays homage to his late prodigy, Pop Smoke .

While Fif managed to get through his vast catalog within the first half of the show, he eventually welcomed Jeremih back out on stage where they performed “Down On Me” together and then, allowed the Chicago singer to deliver a gorgeous stripped-down version of “Birthday Sex” on the piano. Afterward, Fif returned to the fold to close out the show, leading up to the extravaganza that accompanied “In Da Club.” But for his encore, 50 Cent dived into the back catalog with anthems like “Wanksta,” “Southside,” and “Poor Lil’ Rich” before finally closing out with, “I’ll Whip Ya Head Boy.”

Final Thoughts

In 2005, a Liberal Member of the Canadian Parliament petitioned to have 50 Cent banned from performing in Canada as a result of his lyrical content, largely the references to guns. Nearly 20 years later, 50 Cent’s The Final Lap tour yields far different results, providing fans with a healthy dose of nostalgia to revisit the early 2000s. No less of a gangster than he was when he came in the door, 50 Cent's ascended to another stratosphere of pop culture. Similarly, his audience has also evolved and matured within the same time frame. The Final Lap tour isn’t necessarily marketed as a 50th Anniversary Of Hip-Hop event but it certainly emphasizes the contributions of two East Coast legends with the support of one of R&B’s finest talents.

CONCERT REVIEW – THE FINAL LAP TOUR: 50 CENT AND BUSTA RHYMES DELIVER A SHOW TO REMEMBER

Kevin Bourne

50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and Jeremiah performed in Toronto in front of a capacity crowd. We take a closer look in our The Final Lap tour review.

Monday night, 50 Cent brought his The Final Lap tour to Toronto as he performed in front of a capacity crowd at Budweiser Stage . He was joined by Jeremih and fellow New York hip-hop legend, Busta Rhymes , who is fresh off receiving his BET Lifetime Achievement Award .

Busta Rhymes praises Toronto hip-hop legend

Known as one of the greatest, if not  the greatest, live performer in the history of hip-hop, Busta brought his signature high energy, showmanship, and quick flow to the stage alongside his right hand man Spliff Star .

His set spanned decades as he took fans on a trip down memory lane, performing tracks like “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”, “Ante Up”, “Don’t Cha” and “I Know What You Want” . Busta went back to his Jamaican roots, giving the crowd a scolding for not giving a bigger reaction to a “Bloodclot Big Chune” before resuming the track sans Mariah Carey.

He then brought the crowd back to 2023, performing his new hit “Beach Ball” featuring BIA , off his upcoming 11th studio album to be executive produced by Pharrell, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz , and himself.

He ended the show by taking the crowd back to the early days with “Scenario” before closing out with “Bounce” off his 2001 album Genesis . One of the highlights of his set was bringing out Toronto’s own Kardinal Offishall , who he praised as a national treasure, for a performance of “Ol’ Time Killin'” whose remix Busta appeared on back in 2001.

50 rings off hit after hit

Then it was 50 Cent ‘s turn to run through one of the deepest catalogues of hits in hip-hop. Ever. From “ What Up Gangsta”, “Magic Stick”, “This Is How We Do” and “Hate It Or Love It” to “Candy Shop” , “Window Shopper”, “A Little Bit”, “P.I.M.P”, and “Many Men” .

Though Drake is still in the middle of a lengthy run as the top dog in hip-hop, 50 Cent ‘s The Final Lap  tour is a reminder of just how electric 50’s run was as he defied both the industry and his peers to take the top stop. A backdrop at the Ontario Place entrance, with old newspaper articles about politicians wanting to ban 50 from Canada during his prime, sets the tone for how long he’s come as an artist, entrepreneur and icon. He was one of the last hip-hop artists to release music that made you want to dance in the club and turn up with your friends.

As he came closer to the end of his set, he brought fans back to modern times with the Power theme “Big Rich Town” and “The Woo” by the late Pop Smoke showing his ability to dip his toe back in hip-hop and still make relevant music when he needs to.

During a wardrobe change, he brought out Jeremih to perform alongside him before giving him the stage solo to perform his hit record “Birthday Sex”.

After a performance of “In Da Club” and a seriously hyped up call for an encore, 50 returned performing songs like “Rider pt. 2” and “Wangsta” before thanking the crowd and sharing that he feels at home in Toronto.

50 and Busta deliver shows to remember

Both 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes delivered shows to remember, and while both are cut from a similar cloth where performing over backtrack vocals is a no-no, they delivered two distinct shows. While Busta Rhymes is a true MC, playing to and engaging with the crowd, 50 Cent ‘s show doesn’t include much engagement or intimacy with the crowd (minus the odd wave at women in the audience), but he’s in the enviable position of not needing to. 50 is at a rare level where the music has so resonated with fans over the years that they don’t need anything else from him; the music speaks for itself.

Also, perhaps due to his TV storytelling abilities, 50 Cent ‘s show is as much a visual experience as it is an audio experience. From the dancers, confetti, and pillars of fire that could be felt back in second section, to the live band and LED screens displaying streetscapes from the streets of New York, as well as his alcohol brands, The Final Lap is a whole experience; almost a theatre production or live show worthy of a Vegas residency. Adding to the feel good, nostalgic vibes are Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda who do a good job of balancing bringing the hype in support of 50 with slipping out of sight and allowing him to the star of the show.

It’s clear that 50 was having fun and so was the crowd, and, despite the name of the tour, hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.

The “P.I.M.P.” rapper’s career is rollin’ 20 years deep.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is commemorating two decades of sippin’ bub’ in the club like it’s your birthday with his Final Lap Tour 2023, marking the 20th anniversary of his major-label debut album, “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” which The Times wrote was “the biggest sales sensation of the year,” selling 872,000 copies in just four days.

The album, which Interscope Records dropped Feb. 6, 2003, was a joint venture between Eminem’s Shady Records and Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records. It included radio and club hits “Wanksta,” “P.I.M.P.” and “In Da Club.”

50 Cent catapults to the top

The rapper 50 Cent became notorious in the music industry with an underground hit about robbing big-name stars of their jewelry.

Feb. 13, 2003

“It’s exciting to reach the 20-year mark in anything when hip-hop is a youth culture, out with the old, in with the new,” the rapper told Rolling Stone this year. “So it means more that you’re able to stick around and be able to sustain relevance.”

Busta Rhymes and Jeremih will open all the North American dates. The tour kicks off in July and includes stops in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom.

Michael mcdowell heartbroken, yet proud after last-lap talladega crash.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Michael McDowell was in control of Sunday’s race at Talladega Sunday, moments away from scoring his first win of the season.

Yet it was Tyler Reddick who celebrated in Victory Lane. McDowell crashed on the final lap along with several other drivers, the result of a late block on Brad Keselowski.

MORE: Talladega Cup results

“Just heartbroken, man,” McDowell said after the race. “I pull down a little bit sooner, and we win the race. But that’s racing.”

McDowell started the race on the pole, only the second time in his career he had done so. He led a race-high 36 laps and passed Reddick after taking the white flag.

A career-first win at Talladega was within McDowell’s reach. Yet he was not destined to win at NASCAR’s biggest track.

Reddick avoids the chaos in the tri-oval to win at @TALLADEGA ! #GEICO500 pic.twitter.com/yCKTy1KrfN — NASCAR (@NASCAR) April 21, 2024

The situation changed after Keselowski used a push from Noah Gragson to get a run. Keselowski moved high in an attempt to make a race-winning pass. McDowell moved up to block him.

Keselowski moved back to the bottom of the track. McDowell went to block that move but made contact with the front of Keselowski’s car.

That spun McDowell toward the outside wall and sparked an incident that collected multiple cars. Corey LaJoie even did a full rotation in his car after riding along the wall.

“I moved up to block Brad’s run and when I pulled back down, I just wasn’t clear,” McDowell said. “Barely got my bumper and turned me.

“Just unfortunate, and I hate it because we had a good chance of getting a Dark Horse Mustang in victory lane. We definitely had the speed. But on the flip side of that, it’s the last lap at Talladega and you’re going for a win.”

  • Dustin Long ,

McDowell’s Sunday at Talladega ended with his No. 34 Ford on the back of a wrecker. McDowell finished 31st and failed to achieve his goal of delivering Ford its first Cup win of the season in the 10th race.

McDowell left Talladega wishing that he had blocked better and avoided triggering the last-lap crash. Yet he also experienced another emotion after a race featuring fuel-saving, aggressive moves and 72 lead changes.

“I’m super disappointed,” McDowell said. “I hate it that people got caught up in my mess. But I’m proud of our effort. I’m proud of our speed and I’m proud of our race team.”

McDowell entered Sunday’s race 23rd in points. A win would have put him in the playoffs for the second consecutive season and the third time since 2021.

Now, however, McDowell will head back to North Carolina and seek answers. He will examine the footage, talk to his spotter and try to determine exactly what he could have done differently to avoid the race-ending crash.

“You’re dealing with inches the whole time and I miscalculated,” McDowell said.

Scottie Scheffler finishes the job at RBC Heritage. Here's how to put his 10th career PGA Tour win in perspective

A dd this arcane bit of knowledge to the list of superlatives you've already heard about Scottie Scheffler: From his first win on the PGA Tour to his 10th, he needed just 50 starts, which is faster than a relative slowpoke named Tiger Woods. He unlocked that achievement on Monday morning at the weather-delayed RBC Heritage, playing the final three holes in one over—including a safe bogey on 18, which was his first hole over par since the second hole on Thursday—to secure his latest win in a stretch so scintillating that it's becoming harder and harder to describe.

How about this: He's the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the Masters and then win the following week. He’s also the first since Woods in 2006 (PGA Championship, WGC-Bridgestone) to win the week after any major victory. That may sound like a musty historical stat without much meaning, until you start to understand the mental strength it signifies. Winning a major is supposed to be a mentally taxing event, particularly at the end of a stretch of big wins like Scheffler had pulled off, from Bay Hill to the Players. On Thursday, when he made his double bogey on the second, it seemed like he may be experiencing a hangover at long last. Instead, he put the mistake in the past, torched Harbour Town for a 65 and 63 on Friday and Saturday, and then cruised to a 68 in his interrupted final round, winning by a comfortable three-shot margin.

Forget his actual physical ability; this guy is a psychological fortress.

"I think mentally the last month or so has been as good as I've been in a long time," he said after he finished on Monday. "And I think that's why I'm seeing some of the results, just staying in it doing the best I can...a lot of that stuff is easier said than done, but I'm proud of how I've been mentally the last bit."

He has become such a consummate winner that he didn't even need his "usual prep work" heading into the Heritage; he had plenty of fuel in the tank to eventually lap the rest of the field. That's what happens when you lead everyone in two separate Strokes Gained categories—off the tee and approach—and stay above average in putting, aka the patented Scheffler Victory Formula.

About that field … there was some terrific golf being played, even though so much of it felt irrelevant in Scheffler's shadow. It wasn't irrelevant; at least not to them. Sahith Theegala, bunched up with several others at 15 under at the start of the morning, came out and made a critical birdie on 16 to separate himself from the pack and secure a solo second-place finish. J.T. Poston went the other way after opting to wait to finish the 18th on Sunday night; he missed a five-footer for par on the green, and dropped to 14 under, leaving Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark in a tie for third at 15 under. Poston finished in a tie for fifth with Justin Thomas, Patrick Rodgers, and Scheffler's final round partner Sepp Straka.

But Scheffler once again towered over them all, and perhaps the only man higher than him all week was his caddie Ted Scott, who was literally higher when he leaped into the air on the 18th green expecting a chest bump from Scheffler, only for his player to stay planted to the ground, watching him with a mystified grin. Scott should recover easily from this temporary embarrassment; if you assume normal pay rates, Digest's Jamie Kennedy calculated that he's made more than Rory McIlroy this year .

Those are the perks of working with the best player in the world—a title that, nice as it sounds, might not be descriptive enough for what Scheffler has accomplished. At age 27, on the verge of being a father, he's somehow surpassed merely being first among contemporaries; at this point, it's no longer controversial to argue that he's the best we've seen since Woods himself.

Sahith Theegala’s “epic” reaction to Scottie Scheffler lapping PGA Tour field

Theegala is in contention at the RBC Heritage, but is of course chasing Scottie Scheffler, like everyone else.

WM Phoenix Open - Final Round, Sahith Theegala, Scottie Scheffler

Sahith Theegala continues to impress for such a young golfer.

Theegala carded a 4-under 67 Saturday to move into a tie for fourth with one round remaining at the RBC Heritage , the latest PGA Tour Signature Event .

He posted three birdies to go with one bogey on both the front and back nines, closing with a par-breaker on 18.

Yet, after his round all of the talk in the media room was about Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler once again leads a tournament heading into Sunday. Scheffler carded a bogey-free 8-under 63 Saturday to take the outright lead at 16-under. Theegala is three back.

After the former Pepperdine Wave finished his round, he was asked his thoughts on what Scheffler is accomplishing in the sport.

RBC Heritage - Round Three, Sahith Theegala

“It’s pretty epic... I grew up watching the end of Tiger, got to see Rory, DJ, Jordan, like all these guys kind of dominate for a period of time, and I was like, we could be in the midst of something really, really special, and I just thought it was cool,” Theegala explained.

Scheffler is looking to win his fourth tournament in his last five starts. Even more impressive is the fact that the wins have been at the Arnold Palmer Invitational , The Players Championship and The Masters.

Those are three of the most stacked fields you will find.

His dominance has likely left a number of players on Tour frustrated, but not Theegala.

“It’s got to be annoying for some of the guys, but I love it. I still think I have a way to go to really prove myself that I am, I would say, a top-15,-10 player in the world. I haven’t gotten to that point quite yet.

“I’m not annoyed, I’m just kind of sitting back, and it’s honestly really cool to see.”

Scheffler is playing otherworldly right now. We have not witnessed someone play this well, this consistently since prime Tiger Woods .

Theegala then summed it up for everyone perfectly.

“It gives us something to strive for.”

How F1 safety cars work: virtual vs. real and ideas for improvements

Between the Racing Lines  |  Formula One is complicated, confusing and constantly evolving. This story is part of our guide to help any fan — regardless of how long they’ve watched the sport or how they discovered it — navigate the pinnacle of motorsports.

The ending of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix put a spotlight once again on Formula One’s safety car procedures after George Russell’s scary-looking crash on the last lap left his Mercedes tipped on its side.

Sitting in the middle of the track and still in the driver’s seat, the British driver began calling over the radio for a red flag, which would have suspended the race. Race control instead opted to use a Virtual Safety Car (VSC), one of its many tools for ensuring driver and marshal safety in the event of an incident, alongside yellow flags, a regular safety car and the red flag. It took 12 seconds for a VSC to be called from the moment the last-lap incident happened.

These tools all have different purposes, vary in how they impact a driver’s race, and play a role in teams’ strategy plans. The standards are constantly evaluated by the sport’s governing body, but debates and suggestions for improvement do arise from the drivers, teams and the FIA.

Here’s what you need to know about safety cars and the critical role they play in F1 .

The types of safety cars and their impacts

There are two types of safety cars: virtual and real.

Virtual safety cars (VSC) were introduced in 2015 following Jules Bianchi’s fatal crash during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, to control cars’ speeds during yellow and double yellow flags. Bianchi hit a recovery vehicle that was removing another car that had skidded off the track. He suffered fatal head injuries and died in July 2015.

A VSC slows cars down without deploying a vehicle on track during cautions. The FIA determines the lap time for the cars at each track, and during a VSC, gaps between the vehicles are maintained using a ‘delta’ speed they must adhere to. When the VSC procedure is initiated, FIA light panels will show “VSC” and a message is sent to the competitors. Once it is deemed safe, competitors will receive a message that the VSC is coming off, and the light panels will turn green about 10 to 15 seconds later. Normal racing may then resume.

Whether a VSC or safety car is called depends on a multitude of factors, primarily the level of risk. According to Article 56.1a of the FIA’s sporting regulations, a VSC “will normally be used when double waved yellow flags are needed on any section of track and Competitors or officials may be in danger, but the circumstances are not such as to warrant use of the safety car itself.”

Regular safety cars are physical vehicles that impact strategy and essentially neutralize the race. Cars become more bunched up as they follow the vehicle around the track, and cannot be more than 10 car lengths apart. Drivers can’t overtake one another during a VSC or a safety car, but exceptions do apply. During a safety car period, one exception is if the safety car tells a lapped car it can overtake.

Former DTM racer Bernd Mayländer has driven the safety car since 2000, but he’s not alone in the vehicle. A co-driver helps with communication and operations. Both are required to stay in the car for the entirety of the race, so they’re ready to go when needed.

This weekend = 50th anniversary of the @F1 Safety Car. 👏 Time to let driver @BerndMaylaender take you on a very special tour of the @MercedesAMG GT Black Series. 👀 pic.twitter.com/kpNWoGidsD — Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) June 16, 2023

These safety-minded measures impact strategy. During actual safety car periods, teams practice fuel saving and make cheap pit stops. Drivers typically flood the pitlane to capitalize on the reduced time for a better pit stop as they swap for fresh tires — though those who have pitted beforehand can miss the advantage and see their race derailed. The restart process can be challenging, too. Tires tend to lose grip and temperature during this period, and the scramble to get going again can get bumpy .

How the system can be improved

One question that lingered after the 2024 Australian Grand Prix is whether the safety systems should change in some way.

Russell was left stranded in the middle of the track, the car tipped on its side, on the last lap of the race, and cars were still finishing the grand prix. The Mercedes driver called it “an incredibly uncomfortable position to be in” considering where he was on the track — “on a blind bend, 250 kilometers an hour, right on the racing line with the car half upside down, you know, waiting for disaster to happen.”

According to the FIA, a marshal immediately began waving a physical yellow flag to warn oncoming drivers. Russell said Thursday, “Fortunately I had a 10-second gap behind me and I think it was 10 or 12 seconds before the Safety Car came out. But in the space of 10 seconds, you can have five, six, seven cars if that was on Lap 1 of the race, and probably been hit numerous times, even with the yellow flag.”

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 24: The car of George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes is seen on track after he crashed during the F1 Grand Prix of Australia at Albert Park Circuit on March 24, 2024 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Joe Portlock - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images)

The light panels switched to yellow flags in the area 1.6 seconds after Russell’s incident, and around five seconds after the impact, it was upgraded to double yellow flags. It took 12 seconds total after the incident for a VSC to be called.

There are a few reasons why the race wasn’t red flagged, including that there weren’t any cars immediately following Russell. If the incident occurred in the middle of the race rather than the final lap, a red flag likely would’ve been used because the car would’ve needed to be recovered. Given it was the final lap, it was safer for the drivers to pass at a slower speed before returning to the pits.

It’s natural to question whether safety systems should be updated, and the FIA is always evaluating incidents and safety standards. Russell’s comments came before the FIA clarified the safety procedures in Melbourne, but the sentiment stands given how rapidly technology evolves. The Brit offered a suggestion that an automated system could be introduced in the future.

“I think we need to find a way that if a car is in a danger zone, automated VSC straight away within half a second or so, because those seconds count,” Russell said. “Lives are at risk. We’ve seen it spar numerous times in the past, cars, aquaplaning. I think it’s time with the technology that we have to make steps in this area.”
