Serengeti Zanzibar Tanzania Safari

EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

Private game drives in Tauck's open-top safari vehicles in Serengeti national park – led by expert guides for unparalleled wildlife viewing

A hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti plains at dawn, followed by a champagne breakfast

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

On-Tour Air included (1 flight)

4 nights in Serengeti National Park – 2 in a Maasai "Rondavel"- styled lodge and 2 in a luxury tented camp; an authentic "sundowner" cocktail party

Two nights in Zanzibar include a "spice" walking tour and sailboat cruise on the Indian Ocean

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Consistently robust – very full and active days, extended travel times, use of different modes of local transport, and a possibility of early starts.

Experiences of a lifetime

Embark on a grand adventure within Tanzania's most renowned game reserves and enjoy the safari experience of a lifetime.

A picnic lunch in ngorongoro crater, game drives and a picnic in africa's original "garden of eden".

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

Private cruise on a traditional dhow

Sailing off on a dhow for an "indian ocean safari".

Dhows – traditional, handcrafted Arabian sailboats – have sailed the waters of the Indian Ocean and the Zanzibar archipelago for centuries, trading and fishing their way from one port to the next. Set out to sea aboard a dhow on a private cruise for an "Indian Ocean safari" – keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins frolicking in the waves. Cast anchor off a beach for lunch in a paradise of white sands and turquoise sea... and perhaps swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters off beautiful coral reefs.

Kirawira Tented Camp

Nights 6 and 7

Edwardian grandeur on the Serengeti plains

Sitting on a hilltop overlooking the vast plains of the Serengeti, Kirawira Tented Camp is patterned after the classic African hunting camps of the Edwardian era. Offering amazing views of the endless savanna and the parade of wildlife passing through it, your spacious en suite tent is raised on a wooden platform, and features furnishings evoking the grand style of a century ago.

This trip was the best experience I've ever had on vacation. Our Tauck Director was incredible – she saw to every detail & the guides and drivers were fantastic.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to obtain ALL necessary documentation prior to your tour may result in being denied entry into a country, or delays in entry until proper documentation can be obtained.  In consideration of the larger group (and to maintain our planned itinerary), travelers who have failed to obtain the necessary documentation in advance may need to remain at the airport, and could thus be responsible for arranging (and paying for) their own transportation to join the group.  Tauck will not be responsible for obtaining any missing documentation, nor will Tauck be responsible for any expenses incurred, missed tour components or other losses resulting from the failure to obtain proper travel documents in advance.

Non-U.S. citizens should check with the Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate to determine necessary travel documents.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by CareFree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $769 per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Strict limitations on our on-tour flights require you to check only one piece of soft-sided luggage weighing no more than 33 lbs (14.97 kg). This weight limit includes all camera equipment. Soft-sided luggage is required to ensure your piece fits into irregularly shaped luggage compartments.

To help with your packing, we will provide you with a duffel bag that has been specially designed to provide more than adequate space for essential items needed while on safari on days 4-8.

In addition, you are limited to one soft-sided, carry-on bag per person not to exceed 15 lbs. (6.8 kg) that is no larger than an average knapsack.

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 44 pounds (20kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for safari vehicle travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern safari vehicles offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, valuables, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the seat must be stored in the luggage truck, and will be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

All travelers to Africa should be in reasonably good health. While there is a not a significant amount of walking on this tour, it is challenging, as you cross over uneven terrain, frequently in warm weather and climb in and out of safari vehicles. On Day 8, you board a single or twin engine aircraft accommodating 13-18 guests for the flight to Arusha. We do not recommend this tour for those who require assistance walking or who travel with an oxygen tank.

There are certain rules and regulations that one should be aware of while on safari. It is important that you listen to your tour director, local guide or ranger, as they are trained to be aware of the environment around them. Guests should be aware that while on safari, you will be traveling in smaller groups and will travel on small bush planes and/or helicopters.

Guests will share smaller safari vehicles, where they will be required to rotate not only safari guides, rangers and cars, but also seats within the car. Please note that there are limited medical facilities, and guests will not have exclusive use to a vehicle should they need special attention or consideration.

The safari vehicles are not air conditioned. The cars have six window seats, with roofs that lift up for animal viewing. Please note that the areas traversed on game drives are typically unpaved and will often be bumpy and dusty.

Please note that all Tauck guests will dine at Tauck Designated tables for meals. The majority of meals while on safari, are buffet due to the international guests that stay at the lodges.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

East Africa is truly a year-round destination, as most frequently the climate features warm, bright days and cool, crisp nights. Daytime temperatures throughout the year typically range from 60 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, or 15.5 to 35 degrees Celsius. Evening temperatures can be cooler, ranging from 50 to 60 F, or 10 to 15.5 C.

Late afternoon rains are customary in East Africa. The rainy seasons are March to May (the "long rains") and October to December (the "short rains"). During these times downpours occur mostly in the late afternoons, and are generally brief. October to December is preferred by some for smaller crowds, verdant scenery, and delightful temperatures.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .

What To Pack

Please Note: Tanzania has adopted a regulation prohibiting the use or possession of single-use plastic bags (not including small Ziploc bags), which have become an environmental issue there.  This new regulation is particularly noteworthy because it becomes effective on June 1, 2019.  Penalties for violating the regulation have not been made public, but for guidance, in nearby Kenya the penalties are extremely severe: a fine of up to $40,000 or four years in prison for simply possessing a plastic bag .  In banning plastic bags, Tanzania is joining more than 60 other countries that have banned, partly banned or taxed single-use plastic bags, including China, France, Rwanda and Italy.

As you prepare for your journey, and as you contemplate what to pack, we strongly urge you to keep this new regulation in mind.  Please also be sure to carefully inspect your luggage and any carry-on bags you plan on using, to ensure no forgotten plastic bags are lurking in any pockets or compartments.

Your African safari is a very casual tour. Comfortable and casual clothing is recommended for both day and night. Formal and resort attire is not required. Generally, lightweight, cotton, short- and long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and shorts are sufficient. A light jacket, fleece, or windbreaker, as well as layers of clothing, are suggested for cooler temperatures during early morning game drives and evenings. A bandana or cotton scarf will always comes in handy.

While on Safari, you may prefer to wear natural, earth-toned clothing, such as khakis, tans, browns, and greens (this is not imperative and other colors are fine), as well as comfortable walking shoes (hiking boots are not necessary). Dark, black or navy blue clothing is not recommended while on safari as these colors have been known to attract biting tse tse flies. It is also advisable to bring a swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip protection. Some stretches of unpaved road traveled during game drives can be quite bumpy.

Game drives can be dusty, so wear something that can be washed while on safari. Clothes may be laundered at all camps for a nominal fee.

A personal kit with medication for possible upset stomach, aspirin, and allergy medicine may also be useful. If you are taking prescription drugs, bring a prescription signed by your doctor in case you need an emergency refill while traveling. Insect repellent with DEET is a very important item to include in your kit. Pre-moistened towelettes, antibacterial lotion, and a flashlight will also be useful on your safari.

Pack your medical kit in your carry-on bag along with an extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses and a change of clothes in case of luggage delay.

For viewing wildlife, we recommend you bring a good pair of binoculars and your own photography supplies, such as plenty of film, batteries, a 200mm telephoto lens, lens cap, lens papers, UV filter and, for video-recording, an adequate supply of video cassettes.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Table of Contents

The best 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar Tours

Price of a 10 day tanzania safari and zanzibar trip.

A 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour starts at about $2,800 per person. Mid-range lodge tours start at $3,800 per person whilst luxury tours start at around $5,000 per person. There are many factors determining the price of a 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach combo trip.

Safari combo packages to Zanzibar and Tanzania span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 10 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is 10 days safari in tanzania and zanzibar sufficient.

10 days is plenty of time to see and experience the thrills of a Tanzania safari in the Serengeti, whilst leaving enough time to explore the beaches, sights and smells of the historic Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The number of days required to effectively complete a combined safari and beach combo trip can range from anywhere between 1-2 weeks, depending on the visitor’s time and budget.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. In Tanzania, a safari here is like nowhere else in the world, with a reputation for prime game viewing, the surreal Serengeti plains, luxury lodges, stunning beaches and of course, the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, visitors will be delighted with their trip here.

Accommodation offered on a 10 days Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible Zanzibar and Tanzania landscapes and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation Africa has to offer. The accommodation offered on safari and beach combination trips is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Guests can also go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip

The most popular option for a 10 days Tanzania safari is the world renowned Serengeti National Park . A popular honeymoon destination and documentary location in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti plains are home to the world’s largest movement of animals including the Big 5, often called the “Great Migration.”

It’s also one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems on the planet. Its weather patterns, fauna and flora are believed to have changed very little over a million years, giving the area a prehistoric feel.

The landscape of the Serengeti Plain is also extremely varied, ranging from savannah, to hilly woodlands, to open grasslands. Apart from rhinos and hunting dogs, visitors will readily see every species of African savanna mammal within the Serengeti.

Whilst in Zanzibar, a trip to one of their famous beaches is of course essential! Pamunda Island is a small island off the beaten track is a haven for stunning sandy beaches, turquoise waters and small coves, perfect for beach walks and water based activities.

Whilst the capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a historic old part of the capital of Zanzibar and melting pot of Indian, European, Arab and Swahili cultures. Stone Town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a rich and storied past, perfect for visitors to wander around.

Animals on a Tanzania safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Tanzania safari! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 5 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.

The Serengeti and the crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. A 5 day trip to Ruaha or Selous in the south can also be very productive where you’ll see lions, wild dogs, antelopes and kudu.

How much money do I need for a 10 day Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $320 for a Zanzibar Tanzania safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Combination safaris in Zanzibar and Tanzania can be more expensive due to the higher costs of accommodation, transport and food.

What animals will I see on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar safari tour?

Visitors on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar combination safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania tour?

The best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania safari is from June to October when there’s practically no rain and daytime temperatures are not too hot. With an overall moderate climate, Zanzibar and Tanzania however are considered a great year-round safari and beach destination.

Day 1 arusha.

Arrive at anytime.

Head out to a local bar where the drinks are affordable and the company is fantastic. Get to know your new travel mates over a few Tuskers as a group. Connect over past travels, set your intentions for this trip, and as the night settles around you; simply enjoy being in the moment.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 arusha/serengeti national park.

Well folks it’s time for the Africa you have all imagined, the experience that has been depicted over and over again in books, movies, and television. So grab those cameras, purchase a quirky bucket hat, and head out on a wildlife safari drive into one of the most famous national parks in Africa; the Serengeti.

Get ready for abundant wildlife, vast golden plains dotted with thorny acacia trees, and hippo-filled rivers as you begin a 3-day and 2-night excursion into the park itself and the great Ngorongoro Crater.

Meals included:

Day 3 serengeti national park/ngorongoro.

Grab your buddies and jump aboard for one last morning safari in the Serengeti. As the sun rises higher in the sky watch the animal kingdom come to life in this grassland savannah before returning to break down camp.

Then it’s on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for Africa’s best wildlife viewing. Get ready for epic views from the crater rim and watch as animals meander around below drinking water from the permanent supply on the crater floor. You’ll be setting up camp in the late afternoon at a site near the crater rim and then you can spend the rest of the day enjoying one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on the planet.

Day 4 Ngorongoro/Arusha

It’s time to experience “Africa’s Garden of Eden” on a more personal level. Today, venture down to the crater floor where the group will embark on a final safari experience. Have those cameras charged and at the ready because, let’s face it if you are going to see any wildlife this would be the place (and we are so excited for you)!

The animals are bound to this area by the crater walls and the enclosed nature of the crater means its own ecosystem has been created think; rich grasslands, swamps, acacia forests, and Lake Makat so get ready to see some magic.

With full camera rolls the group will exit the crater in the late morning and travel back to Arusha. Swap stories along the way, pick those favourite photos from earlier, or simply sit back and let yourself enjoy the passing scenery as you cruise along.

Day 5 Arusha/Dar es Salaam

Leave Arusha early and be on the lookout for the mighty Mt Kilimanjaro on the road towards Dar es Salaam and watch as the Tanzanian countryside passes by and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean make their debut.

The city started as a fishing village in the mid 19th century before becoming a port and trading centre. The group will spend the night here before embarking for the island beaches of Zanzibar.

Want to cut travel time in half and spend more time in Stone Town? Pre-book the Zanzibar Express on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour.

Day 6 Dar es Salaam/Stone Town

After the jam packed last few days of this trip where you are going next is going to be just what you needed. Wake in Dar es Salaam before hopping on the ferry to the paradise of Zanzibar.

Get ready for picturesque island beaches that will make you contemplate staying here and living off the grid. Few places on this planet are as entrancing and exotic as this Tanzanian archipelago so get ready to enjoy it, take loads of pictures, and relax in a place that has long lured backpackers and adventurers to it’s sandy shores.

Day 7 Beach day in Zanzibar

Roll out of bed this morning in Stone Town and explore the heart of Zanzibar. Wander the winding historic unpaved alleyways of Stone Town passing by balconies and gigantic wooden carved doors along the way.

Get lost and spend hours exploring the streets and squares, drinking potent coffee from pavement vendors and buying sweetmeats from tiny cafes. Keep an eye out for tinga-tinga paintings, antique shops, beautifully printed cloths (kangas and kikois worn by local people), little carved chests with copper inlays, and spices – all beautiful presents or memories to take home. Transfer to the tropical haven of Jambiani for a relaxing few days as a group.

Day 8 Beach day in Zanzibar

Wake up in this island paradise and get ready to seize the day. You’ll be exploring one of the world’s great cultural crossroads… think Africa meets Arabia and add the Indian Ocean into the mix as the cherry on top.

The day is yours to spend as you choose; head out for a diving experience, grab some goggles and go snorkelling, hop aboard a sailing trip, or just lounge on the beach and relax. Zanzibar’s tropical setting, unique culture, and active beach-party scene make this place a very enjoyable East African Indian Ocean experience.

Day 9 Stone Town

Your most difficult task today is going to be pulling yourself away from the beauty that surrounds you in Jambiani. Travel back to Stone Town on the other side of the island and explore the heart of Zanzibar.

The tour ends in the late morning.

Learn more about Tanzania

Culture and customs.

Tanzania’s population is a vibrant mix of religions, races and cultures. Depending on what area you’re traveling in, be prepared to see a variety of cuisines, customs and dress, which directly reflect the diversity of the population.

The island of Zanzibar is predominately Muslim; Maasai are largely found in the North along with other indigenous tribes whose beliefs are largely animist; and Christians, Hindus and other minority groups can be found throughout the country.

Although most Tanzanians may not have many material possessions, travelers can expect a warm welcome and generosity from most locals.

Greeting styles and language differ according to ethnic or tribal group but universally, visitors can expect to receive a warm welcome and a smile from most.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Tanzania

Seafood-lovers will adore the range of fresh seafood on offer in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. From fragrant fish curries to barbecued shrimp and lobster, the waterfront markets and restaurants are full of wonders from the sea.

2. Indian Cuisine

With a significant Indian population, Tanzanian cities have a fair share of Indian restaurants. Whether you’re visiting a budget cafe or more extravagant restaurant, Indian cuisine is generally a good option for vegetarians as there will always be a few meat-free options to choose from.

These sweet, fried breads can be found at markets and street stalls throughout East Africa, and make a delicious, cheap snack. Although they can be flavored differently, the ones made in Zanzibar usually feature fresh spices and coconut.

Geography and environment

Bordered by Burundi, Kenya , Malawi , Mozambique , Rwanda , Uganda , Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania has one of the most diverse natural environments in the world.

While traveling through Tanzania, you’ll be able to see enormous gorges, sprawling savanna, ancient islands, dense woodlands, snow-capped mountain ranges, vast lakes, colonial towns and modern cities.

With the Indian Ocean occupying the eastern side of Tanzania, this country truly does have the best of both worlds. Home to Africa’s highest peak and some of the most famous nature reserves in the world, Tanzania also has eclectic cities and vibrant villages to boast of.

Tanzania’s former capital, Dar es Salaam, is a modern metropolis with a colonial flavor while the regional center of Arusha has retained a village feel.

Zanzibar is in a category of its own with its ancient cobbled streets and unique, heritage-filled buildings.

History and government

Early history.

Home to some of the earliest human remains in the world, the land now known as Tanzania could possibly be one of the first lands to have been inhabited by early humans. Human habitation can be traced back 10,000 years to a time when people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle before outside influences arrived bringing with them organized agriculture and cattle farming. Visitors to Tanzania should head to Olduvai Gorge (known as the 'Cradle of Mankind') if interested in the early history of Tanzania and, in fact, the world.

Recent history

Europeans only arrived in the 15th century, via the East Coast. Zanzibar was first controlled by the Portuguese, then by Arabian traders interested in easy access to the Indian Ocean that allowed trade with Asia and beyond. This was also a time when the human slave trade was a lucrative business. The island of Zanzibar became a pivotal place for this trade, with more than 100,000 slaves passing through during this period.

Mainland Tanzania came under the influence of German, Belgian and British colonizers in the 1800s, who explored and mapped the interior of the country. German colonizers brought infrastructure, agriculture and Christianity to Tanzania, but faced resistance from many tribes who fought against being forced into labor and desperately wanted to keep their land and preserve their traditional way of life. During World War I, Germany lost the colony to the British, heralding a new era of colonial rule for the region. More recently, Tanzania adopted its constitution in 1977, held its first multi-party election in 1995 and had its first female presidential candidate in 2005.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania’s climate changes with its diverse landscapes, so expect variances in weather in different parts of the country.

Generally, January and February are the high season for travel in Tanzania as the hot, dry weather is generally considered to be the most pleasant.

The best time to  visit the Serengeti  is late June to October when the animals are most abundant.

Expect afternoon downpours during the wet season (from March to May); however, during this time you’ll find fewer tourists in Tanzania so you won’t have to compete with crowds.

Is tipping customary in Tanzania?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Tanzania but a little generosity will be received positively, especially when considering the low wages that Tanzanian service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Tanzania?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Tanzania’s large cities, but limited to no access should be expected in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Tanzania?

Cell phone coverage is good in Tanzania’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in Tanzania?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Tanzania, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels, tourist attractions and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as they are rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

Tanzania's unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Street snack = 500-3,000 TZS
  • Bottle of local beer = 2,000-4,000 TZS
  • Plate of food from a local eatery = 3,000 TZS
  • Dinner in an international restaurant = 10,000-20,000 TZS

Can I drink the water in Tanzania?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Tanzania. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Tanzania?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Tanzania?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and urban centers but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities as ATMs aren't always an option.

Does my trip to Tanzania support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Tanzania directly support our foundation partner, The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) .

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) provides education, support and advocacy to ensure the fair and ethical treatment of Kilimanjaro Porters. The Porters who guide and support trekkers are often overworked and underpaid; donations from our trips support KPAP to identify and monitor tour operators committed to the fair treatment of mountain crew during a Kilimanjaro climb.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Tanzania and Zanzibar: A 10 Day In-depth Itinerary

Tanzania is a vast country, from the snowy peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, to the incredible wildlife parks and turquoise waters of Zanzibar. Ten days is a reasonably short time to spend in both Tanzania and Zanzibar but if you are short on time, there is still a lot you can pack into 10 days.

Here is a 10 day itinerary for an amazing week in Tanzania and Zanzibar !

Day 1 in Tanzania

Arusha is a fairly large town and is where most of the safari tours will depart from. There is actually quite a bit you can do here, so it is worth spending at least a day here. You can visit the Cultural Heritage Centre (which has an awesome souvenir shop) or explore the Arusha Natural History Museum.

There are many markets and souvenir shops that sell some really unique gifts, such as wooden animals masks and beautiful oil paintings. If you have more time to spend here, then head out on a coffee plantation tour or take a visit to the stunning hot springs (which aren’t actually hot!).

Accommodation: There are a lot of places to stay in Arusha from homestays, hostels, bnb’s, and nice hotels. If heading out on a safari and returning to Arusha, it may be worth seeing if your hotel can arrange for your luggage to be kept safe, so you only have a small bag for safari. Although I kept my big backpack, so this is still fine.

Take a look on booking.com for a whole range of options.

Day 2 in Tanzania

Maasai tribe.

Close to Mto wa Mbu village, take a visit to see one of Tanzania’s Maasai tribes, which is a 2 to 3 hour drive away. These tours can give a real insight into how the tribe lives, their culture and traditions, and their homes. The tribe is incredibly welcoming and will greet you with big smiles. You can even have a go at jumping with the ladies, whilst they sing.

The G Adventures tour I was on had created the Planeterra project, which installs cooking stoves in the villager’s huts. These can help keep out 90% of the pollution from the smoke, as well as being much safter than having an open fire. The women were very happy to show us inside their huts.

Accommodation: Again, there are so many options here in the village of Mto wa Mbu . I stayed at the Twiga Campsite and would recommend it. They have cheaper camping, as well as actual lodges if you fancy something a bit nice. Although I would recommend camping! There is something pretty special about sleeping under the African sky. The Twiga site also has a pool to relax in at the end of the day.

holding hands with maasai women in tanzania

Day 3 in Tanzania

Mto wa mbu to serengeti national park.

This is a long 8 hour drive, but on the way, you will still see lots of wildlife through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way you will pass through a few towns and villages, be sure to stock up on food and essentials if you are camping in the Serengeti.

Your best bet is to book a tour when in Arusha (or whilst planning your trip). Whether it is a camping tour, or a luxury resort stay, they should take care of the food for you, so you only really need to buy any snacks, or toiletries etc. Tours can range from budget to luxury. My tour was one of the cheapest as I chose to camp, and I absolutely loved it!

Arriving to the entrance of the Serengeti is incredibly exciting and you will see animals almost immediately! If you choose to camp, then you will be sleeping amongst the lions, zebras and all the other wild animals, as there are no gates or barriers. This is a little scary but also pretty amazing, I mean my group even had a wild elephant take a walk through the campsite.

Accommodation: There are many types of accommodation in the Serengeti, but you will most likely be booked on a tour in which it comes included. Whether you have a tent or a 5* resort, you will not be disappointed.

Day 4 in Tanzania

Full day safari.

Wake up early for sunrise to get the most out of your day of wildlife viewing. This is such a pretty time in the Serengeti National Park and the animals will all be out, so this is a good time to spot them. I was only in about 10 minutes before we saw a big male elephant walking through the trees.

You could spot anything from lions, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, crocodiles, monkeys, elephants, birds, hippos, giraffes and so much more! There is even a small café right in the middle of the park, where you can grab a coffee and snack. Our group headed back to camp for lunch, before heading out again the afternoon.

Accommodation: Same as previous night. If you are camping, then you can sit by the bonfire with a cold beer and roast marshmallows. If staying in a lodge, well…. Just enjoy whatever amazing things they have to offer there haha!

Serengeti migration safari Tanzania

Day 5 in Tanzania

Serengeti national park to ngorongoro.

Slowly drive out of the Serengeti National Park, seeing all the animals from the previous day, and make your way to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater. If you thought you saw a lot of animals in the Serengeti, you will be amazed what you find here.

I could not believe how much wildlife there was, and all so close together too. The backdrop of the crater is absolutely stunning. Driving through, I saw herds of wildebeest and zebra, lions, elephants, a hippo, and a rhino which was in the distance.

Accommodation: Your accommodation will be included in your tour. If on a camping tour, you may get to stay at a campsite overlooking the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. I stayed at Simba Campsite, which had beautiful views. This is also where the elephant casually walked through our tents!

zebra Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania

Day 6 in Tanzania

Back to arusha.

Your safari tour is likely to drop you back off at Arusha, where you first departed. Enjoy the drive back, taking in all the small villages and dusty roads. When back in Arusha, either relax in your accommodation or campsite, or enjoy the nightlife, ranging from bars, restaurants, clubs, a cinema, or live music venue. Just be sure to go out with a group after dark to keep safe when in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Accommodation: Arusha accommodation ranges from hostels to fancy hotels.

Day 7 in Tanzania

Arusha to stone town, zanzibar.

Get an early flight and travel to the beautiful Zanzibar. The time from Arusha to the airport is around a 1 hour drive, and then the flight to Zanzibar is approximately 1.5 hours. If you get an early flight, you will have plenty of time to explore Stone Town.

The flight to Zanzibar will likely be on a small plane and you will get some incredible views flying onto the island. The blue waters are just divine!

Stone Town is such a cool place, with a mix of different cultures and architecture. It has a sort of European feel with all the old buildings but mixed with African, Arab, and Indian cultures. Its full of life, with many markets, palaces, and museums to visit. I would recommend a visit to the slave chambers. Even though it can be upsetting it can give a real insight into life back then and allow you to understand more about the island’s history.

There are many restaurants and bars to spend the evening too. I went to one rooftop bar to watch the sun go down with a lovely cocktail in hand.

Accommodation: There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses to stay at in Stone Town.

Christ Church Zanzibar

Day 8 in Tanzania

Stone town to beach resort.

This morning, you could either explore some more of Stone town, or make your way straight to the beach resort. I booked half day tour for myself, going out to Changuu Island. I would really recommend this tour; it is only 30 minutes from Stone Town by boat. The island has a hard history and was used to hold slaves back in the day. However nowadays many people visit to see the giant tortoises that live here. You can also go snorkelling off the island as part of the tour, where you can see lots of colourful little fish.

If you want to head straight to the beach, basically anywhere you go in Zanzibar is gorgeous, so not sure you can go wrong here. However, the North and West side beaches are said to be a little better. I stayed in Nungwi (North point) at cheapish hotel beach resort, with buffet breakfast included (bacon here I come).

The area is essentially a long strip of beach resorts and bars and cafes. You can venture out to the local area and villages if you want a bit more of an authentic experience, but I would either book a village tour or go with other people, as I’m not sure how safe it would be if you are alone.

Generally, the locals are friendly, but you may get hassled by the beach boys trying to sell you cheap sunglasses! Apart from that, you can basically just relax and enjoy paradise. The water is so clear and if you get up early for sunrise, you will see the calm waters sparking. You may even see the local women going out in the ocean to fish.

If you are after a little more action, then there are a few water sports to enjoy, as well as paddle boarding, snorkelling, and sunset boat tours.

Accommodation: There are so many fabulous places to stay in Zanzibar, ranging from low budget backpackers to luxury resorts.

Nungwi beach

Day 9 in Tanzania

Beach resort.

Explore more of the beautiful resort, sip cocktails on the beach, have a game of beach volleyball with the locals, read a good book, go for an ocean swim, or just sit and people watch! This is a great time to sit and relax after a busy safari. I would recommend you time your trip here well though as I got caught out with monsoon rain for much of my time here!

For those who cannot sit still, why not try making your way to a few beaches and seeing what Zanzibar has to offer. A trip from the Northern end and down the West coast could be a great way to see a few different beaches.

Accommodation: Again, plenty of places to stay for all budgets.

Day 10 in Tanzania

Beach resort to stone town.

Enjoy the morning before heading back to Stone Town and traveling to your next destination (book a late flight so you can still have almost a full day!).

If you have time, you could visit some of Zanzibar’s wildlife filled forests, such as the Jozani Forest or Masingini Forest. There are also caves to explore, old ruins and spice plantations.

When to Visit Tanzania and Zanzibar

Tanzania (serengeti).

Safaris can be enjoyed any time of the year, although March to May is the low season as there will likely be rain. However, I went in March and had great weather, so you never know! January and February can also be a good time to visit the Southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

If you are wanting to catch the great wildebeest migration at its best, then go in June to September. Temperatures are generally in the mid to high 20’s region (Celsius) but at night they can drop to around 15 degrees. During early morning and night, it can get cool on safari, so bring some warmer clothes.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June-October. This is when you will see the least rain and the temperatures are a little cooler. You could also try January and February when it will be dry but hot.

The rain comes from March-May when there will be tropical monsoon rain throughout the island (usually in the afternoon). November and December also have a short rainy season, but its generally lighter (but can be unpredictable).

Temperatures are nice and warm, going down to 19 Celsius at night in the cooler months and going up to low to mid 30’s in the hotter months.

Best time for Tanzania and Zanzibar combined

June to September is one of the best times to see the wildebeest migrations, as well as dry weather in Zanzibar.

January and February is another good time, if you don’t mind it being that bit hotter. The island will be dry, and the animals will be likely to gather at the watering holes.

snorkelling prisn island

What to wear in Tanzania and Zanzibar?

For safari, you will want some neutral coloured clothing to blend in with the scenery. Anything really bright could scare off animas and anything blue tends to attract the tsetse flies. You will want some longer trousers for safari and clothing you do not mind getting a bit dusty. Bring along some shorts or a dress to wear around camp/ hotel. You will also want some warmer clothes for early morning and night-time.

As it is hot and humid you will want to bring loose fitting clothing, with breathable fabrics such as linen. Of course, bring along bathing suits, shorts, dresses etc but do remember this is a Muslim country so these types of clothes would be better for the beach. For walking around Stone Town, or the villages, you will want to cover up your legs and shoulders and not wear anything too tight or figure hugging.

I really hope this post on Tanzania and Zanzibar was helpful. If you wanted a longer safari, you could either take out the full day in Arusha or sacrifice a beach day for an extra day of wildlife viewing. The safari was one of the best things I have done so its worth doing 2 days minimum, preferably 3 or 4 days.

When is the best time to visit tanzania.

The best time to visit Tanzania is during the dry season that ordinarily fall  between the months of July and October . The reason why these drier months are great for visiting Tanzania for safari is because firstly; the bushes are less dense than during the rainy season. Secondly because that is the peak for The Great Wildebeest Migration and especially the river crossing.

However, Tanzania can be toured at any time of the year and you can take advantage of better rates and less crowds in the parks, if you decide to visit in November to Mid-December as well as the Green season of April – May. If you are interested in seeing the Calving and breeding of the Wildebeest Migration , you will be better off visiting Tanzania in February to March.

Other lesser-known parks and areas that we plan safaris to include the Udzungwa Mountains, Arusha National Park, as well as Lake Natron and Lake Eyasi for off-the-beaten track and cultural safari experiences like no other.

Besides these most popular attractions, we also plan tours to the less traveled parks in the remote Southern Tanzania Safari Circuit such as Ruaha National Park , Mikumi National Park, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park for the hiking and nature lovers, and the Selous Game Reserve . Tanzania's Zanzibar to build international airport on Pemba Island to boost tourism

Thursday, 13 Jun 2024

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibari President Hussein Ali Mwinyi said Wednesday that plans are underway to build an international airport on Pemba Island to boost tourism.

"We need to open up Pemba Island and make it an attractive destination for tourists from across the world and other visitors," Mwinyi said when he officiated the renaming of the tourist hotel at Matemwe on Pemba Island.

The Zanzibar archipelago is formed by the two major islands of Pemba and Unguja, and Pemba Island currently has a small airport that accommodates small planes, said Mwinyi.

Mwinyi said the Zanzibari government has already signed an agreement to build the airport, which will be able to accommodate huge planes from across the world. He did not reveal the airport's contractors.

According to official statistics, Zanzibar witnessed a remarkable 16.4 percent surge in international tourist arrivals in 2023, when it welcomed 638,498 tourists, a record high.
