The rural tourism in Malnad Region of Karnataka

The youth from rural parts migrate to the cities in search of jobs, livelihood, career and opportunities. Likewise, city dwellers look forward for opportunities to spend time in the rural India. There are age old terms and proverbs which suits this situation better “longing and belonging” & “grass on the other side always looks green”.  The irony of life is; we are constantly in search of ‘something better’ than what we already possess. The idea of completeness for human beings do not come from single element of experiences. It’s a permutation and combination we all try to understand and strive to cultivate in our daily routine.

The rural Karnataka has seen a paradigm shift in employment creation through development of tourism sector, which otherwise was dominated only by agricultural activities. Several people have migrated from cities to rural parts to take part in hospitality services and its allied businesses. Last few years was good for the tourism sector in terms of increase in number of quality hospitality services offered for travelers. Malnad is a prominent region which attracts a huge real estate investments made for hospitality services annually. It is an inclusive growth for rural Maland region as it creates steady jobs and business opportunities for the local people.

Malnad region can be considered as a model region for tourism development and employment creation in Karnataka. The tourist footfall has increased over the years boosting the economy at large and also in creating skilled jobs in this region. The rural parts now receive tourists and there is infrastructure ready to accommodate and provide food services clubbed with other nature activities for the guests. Sustainable Crafts of Anegundi – Empowering Local Women

Crafts Of Anegundi

The crafts of Anegundi have ushered in a socio-economic revolution of sorts, delegates from WICCI visited the village to get a first-hand experience.

Crafts Of Anegundi

The beautiful crafts of Anegundi and the indomitable women engaged in their creation drew us like a magnet to the historic and ancient capital of the Vijayanagara Empire . Anegundi is a village that stands right in the middle of the crossroads of history and mythology. The Tungabhadra river flows beside the village and on the opposite bank stands the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi .

Crafts of Anegundi – Karnataka’s First Crafts Tourism Village

Located in the midst of the ancient ruins of the first capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, the village of Anegundi is the birthplace of some unique, contemporary handicrafts . The development of these crafts that use local materials and skills has ignited the sparks of financial independence and women empowerment . So much so, that the Government of Karnataka has a project that envisages Anegundi as Karnataka’s First Crafts Tourism Village .

The project for the development of Anegundi as Karnataka’s Craft Tourism Village is being spearheaded by the Managing Director Of KSHDC, IGP, D Roopa.

Crafts of Anegundi – Anegundi Rural Tourism

Crafts Of Anegundi

Anegundi is a unique village that has been both geographically and historically blessed. The terrain in which Anegundi is located is believed to be one of the oldest plateaus on earth, dating back to more than 4 billion years in the past.

The village that today is dwarfed by the colossal shadow of Hampi, was the place where the seeds of the grand Vijayanagara Empire were sown. Anegundi is also believed to be the Kishkinda which finds a mention in the Ramayana . Numerous signs connecting Anegundi to Neolithic, Megalithic, and Microlithic history abound in Anegundi’s vicinity.

The presence of unique local crafts that make use of the locally available resources that are not only indigenous but also sustainable , gives Anegundi the potential to be developed into a centre for sustainable rural tourism .

Anegundi is a village in the Koppal District of Karnataka, it is located about 20 kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi

Visiting Anegundi With WICCI – Karnataka Niche Tourism Council

Anegundi Hastakala Pravasodyama

Anegundi with its rich heritage and unique crafts attracted the attention of the Karnataka Niche Tourism Council, an arm of WICCI (Women’s International Chamber of Commerce and Industry) . An event, ‘ Anegundi Hastakala Pravasodyama ,” was organized by the council at Anegundi with the objective of understanding the crafts of Anegundi better and interacting with the local women artisans .

A delegation that consisted of Government Officials, Travel Bloggers, Travel Writers, Academicians, and Women Entrepreneurs visited Anegundi and spent a day interacting with the women artisans engaged in different crafts in the village.

The delegation reached Hampi late at night and stayed overnight at Clark’s Inn Hampi. The enthusiastic group of women were looking forward to a wonderful experience at Anegundi, as they left Hampi for their destination.

Anegundi Hastakala Pravasodyama

The excitement was palpable in the bus as it crossed the Anegundi Bridge.

The beautiful and verdant landscapes that surround Anegundi village opened their arms in welcome. the awed delegates marvelled at the exquisite beauty of the terrain where emerald fields crisscrossed with grey boulders, that perched precariously, at ridiculous angles.

Modalane Bagilu - Anegundi Village

Soon the delegation passed the historic, “ Modalane Bagilu ,” ( ಮೊದಲನೇ ಬಾಗಿಲು, ಆನೆಗುಂದಿ ) the First Gate of Anegundi and reached the centre of Anegundi Village . From there they proceeded through the dusty lanes of the village, towards the Common Facility Centre, run by, “The Kishkinda Trust.”

Anegundi village

On the way, typical village scenes played out; children prancing around. a calf dozing in the sun, a farmer cleaning his tractor, and so on.

The women of Anegundi welcomed the women from Bangalore warmly and showed them the magic of their craft, and opened their hearts to them.

Anegundi Handicrafts – Banana Fibre Craft

Artisans at work with Banana Fibre

The flagship craft of Anegundi and the first of the contemporary crafts that were introduced by the Kishkinda Trust is Banana Fiber Craft . The village is surrounded by Banana plantations and the development of the Banana Fibre Craft seems a natural corollary.

Varalakshmi, who has been associated with the Kishkinda Trust since 1997, explained how they started working with natural fibres like Banana Fibre to create various items. She also recalls that in the initial years, women of the village did not venture out, but today about 400 women of the village are employed in the various crafts of the village including Banana fibre craft.

Crafts Of Anegundi

Banana fibre craft is a fusion of locally available materials and skills to create an entire range of over 500 products that include bags, hats, baskets, purses, table mats , and customized products that are made to order.

The Banana fibre is extracted from banana stems that are waste material for Banana planters. The properties of the Banana fibre make it ideal for making sustainable and eco-friendly products . The fibre is fully biodegradable, heat and fire-resistant, and has high tensile strength . Because of its tensile nature, the fibre can be spun into thick ropes or even slender threads.  The Banana fibre craft not only provides income and meaningful employment to the women of Anegundi but is also a source of extra income to the Banana farmers from whom the banana stems are procured.

Nandini at Kishkinda Trust

Nandini who is a local and after graduating in Commerce works with the Kishkinda Trust, explained the process involved in Banana fibre craft. She explained that raw fibre from the Banana stems was soaked in water and later fashioned into ropes of different thicknesses in a manual process.

The ropes were numbered based on their thickness and would be used depending on the products being made, for example, thicker ropes would be used for products like floor mats and baskets, and ropes with less thickness would be used for making jewellery etc.

Weaving Magic With Water Hyacinth

Water Hyacinth

Another innovative craft that uses sustainable and indigenous resources is the craft of making items of everyday use like handwoven baskets, and holders, from Water Hyacinth . What is truly remarkable about this craft is that it is helping in the de-weeding and conservation of the marine life of the Tungabhadra river .

Water Hyacinth

Water Hyacinth is a notorious weed that proliferates in water bodies and is a hazard to the marine systems as it cuts off the oxygen flow to marine life.

With each twist and turn of the Water Hyacinth, the women of Anegundi are contributing to the conservation of their environment and saving of our rivers .

Craft From Tamarind Powder

Craft From Tamarind Powder

Another unique craft that the delegates of the WICCI – Karnataka Niche Tourism Council learnt about, was the craft of making jewellery and decorative items using a mix of Tamarind Powder and Wood Powder .

They watched as the women fashioned the elements of Torans and Necklaces. The process involves mixing Tamarind powder and Wood powder and kneading the mixture with the help of a little water into the required shapes. These shapes would then be dried and baked in the sun to be later painted with a coat of white primer and the required colour.

Kaleidoscopic Kaudi Craft

Kaudi Craft

Clothes of different colours were sewn together into a colourful mosaic to function as a laptop cover.

Kaudi Craft

A few women worked on this craft, known as Kaudi craft , involving the stitching of pieces of cloth of different colours to fashion apparel, and other items.

Interaction With The Women Artisans

Interaction With The Women Artisans

The women from Bangalore were blown away by the dedication and camaraderie of the women of Anegundi. The women of the village opened their hearts as they talked about their work and their lives.

Anegundi Handicrafts

Apart from being enlightened about the crafts that the women worked on, the visitors got some glimpses of the way of life of the Anegundi women . Discussions included local topics like the Anegundi Rathotsavam that was happening in the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, the Ramzan month and how some of the women had prepared a feast of Biriyani in their homes.

The Banana Fibre Craft Of Anegundi

It was an immersive experience as the delegates sat with the artisans and literally learned the ropes. The delegates tried their hands at the different crafts and experienced for a brief time, the life of the women of Anegundi and their craft.

WICCI KNT Members at Anegundi

It was a pleasant sight to behold as the women worked and chatted as a team, not for them the barriers of caste or religion, they were united by the crafts of Anegundi. The women came to work in the centre after finishing their household chores, and some of them came with their kids.

Kids at Anegundi

Zara and Zoya recited a poem, and then little Zara held everyone spellbound with her dancing skills.

Crafts of Anegundi – Way Forward

Women artisans at Anegundi

The women artisans of Anegundi supported by the Kishkinda Trust have carved a trailblazing path, paved with women’s empowerment . They have fueled the development of Anegundi Karnataka, as a sustainable tourism destination . They have been instrumental in giving birth to contemporary crafts including the pioneering Banana Fiber Craft . The Banana Fibre Craft Of Anegundi has propelled Kishkinda crafts onto the global arena.

What is truly amazing is the fact that the women have not rested on their laurels but have continuously innovated in the pursuit of excellence and evolution of new, sustainable artisanal handicrafts .

Crafts Of Anegundi

This has led to more and more innovative products and the process continues. In the words of Varalakshmi, their aim is to ensure that visitors to Anegundi can get all types of craft products, and more and more women of the region get employment.

The Kishkinda Trust is in the process of transitioning the complete operations and ownership of the craft-making units to the local community. The Hari Dharthi Cooperative has been established with this objective in mind. The State Government too now has its focus on Anegundi crafts and is looking to develop it as Karnataka’s First Craft Tourism Village .

The future of Anegundi can be seen in the shining eyes of little Zara and the shy half-smile of Zoya.

Kids at Anegundi

It rests on the fragile shoulders of Dhanush, Keshu, Rahul, Zara, Zoya and other kids of Anegundi who study in the local Government school.

The future of Anegundi and its crafts also depends on travel and tourism stakeholders including travellers, Government agencies, and others . Though the smile never leaves the faces of the strong and empowered women of Anegundi, the pandemic has dealt a blow to their craft, as their mainstay had been overseas markets.

Crafts Of Anegundi

The least that can be done by travel enthusiasts as part of responsible tourism is to visit Anegundi, which has so much to offer and contribute to its economy.

Bidding Adieu To Anegundi

With the artisans at Anegundi

It was soon time for the delegates to take leave of Anegundi. As they left the village of Anegundi behind, they carried within their hearts, the spirit of the indomitable women of Anegundi who had worked a revolution of sorts and brought about socio-economic change in their village.

But if you are in Anegundi, it is impossible to leave without visiting at least one of the monuments of Hampi.

WICCI KNT Members at Hampi

So before heading back to Bangalore, the delegates paid a flying visit to feast their eyes on the iconic stone chariot of Hampi, at the beautiful Vittala temple.

It was so good to learn about the sustainable crafts of Anegundi. I loved reading about the Banana fibre craft in particular. I’d want to buy the bags, hats, baskets, purses, table mats, and other customized products.

The village looks lovely! I love meeting the artisans! They are the unsung heroes behind thousands of beautiful setups! That calf is so cute.

Anegundi as Karnataka’s Craft Tourism Village would undoubtedly be very interesting. Karnataka is a treasure trove of traditional crafts of India. I have been to Hampi but was not aware of this village. Gives me another reason to visit that part of India again. I still believe Indian handicrafts are among the best in the world.

It’s simply amazing to see this place buzzing with so many women working hard to preserve the form of art and making some wonderful souvenirs and things to take back home.

Agri Tourism in Karnataka 48 -56

Profile image of kumar prasanna

To improve its socio economic feasibility, any economy in the present comprehensive economic streamlining phase has created a climate in which local economies have to adjust. As is been observed, economic and social forces operating at the global level are determining both the nature and form of the rural landscape and how we value and use it. Coupled with new ideas and approaches, these changes to leisure and recreation time are encouraging tourism development in rural areas at an ever increasing pace. Rural tourism development in areas not traditionally considered tourism destinations per se occurs incrementally, either as a result of entrepreneurs developing businesses that attract visitors or as a result of visitors discovering the area and thereby generating a demand for tourism related activities to which local entrepreneurs respond. The development of tourism in rural area is not simply a matter of matching tourist demands with local product supply but a matter of evaluating local suitability and acceptability. With the growing importance of Agri-tourism and the thrust given by the government to promote tourism this paper aims at examining the key issues involved in the development of Agri-tourism in Karnataka, challenges faced by Agri- tourism industry and suggest recommendations for the success of Agritourism in Karnataka. Today all the tourists want to escape from the daily hectic life of cities and desire to stay in peaceful environment of rural areas enriched with farming activities. Since 2004, Agro-tourism came into operation first in Baramati Agri Tourism Center under the guidance of Padurang Taware who received the National Tourism award due to this achievement. After that Agri-tourism Development Corporation affiliated and motivated more than 200 farmers to operate Agro-tourism centers in different villages of Maharashtra. Furthermore, Agro-tourism business spread out in the different parts of India such as Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, etc. Today it is estimated that 90 million farmers are living in 6.25 lakh villages producing fo...

rural tourism in karnataka

AARF Publications Journals

Agri tourism as “involves accommodation being offered in the farm house or in a separate guesthouse, providing meals and organizing guests’ activities in the observation and participation in the farming operations.” Tourism was identified as a revenue generating sector in western countries. In India the scenario was totally different. Since her independence in 1947, Indian policy makers had traditionally neglected tourism industry as it was considered to be a luxury segment benefiting only few. As then, the Indian economy depended a lot on agriculture, the government policies had always aimed to develop agriculture and other allied areas. Tourism was always viewed as an industry serving the elite instead

Agri-tourism is the latest concept in the Indian tourism industry, which normally occurs on farms. Agri-tourism is a form of agricultural multi-functionality it gives you the opportunity to experience the real alluring and authentic contact with the village life, taste the local veritable food and get familiar with the many farming tasks during the visit. It provides you the welcome break free from the daily busy and hectic life in the peaceful village environment. It gives you the chance to relax and reinvigorate in the pure natural environment, surrounded by splendid setting. It gives you the chance to see the real India and have the experience on the farm stay holidays. Many Indian farmers especially from Pune and Maharashtra currently involved in or are considering the use of agri-tourism as a mode of diversifying their farm operations. How they will achieve this is the challenge. The overall potential for agri-tourism can only be achieved if strategies to address and overcome their challenges are developed and implemented. This paper is an attempt to identifying the potential of agri-tourism in India by highlights major challenges in this issue with some useful recommendations.

Agriculture in Odisha is the mainstay of the majority of the populace and, thus, holds the key to the State's socioeconomic development. Census 2011 shows that 84% of Odisha's households stay in village areas, with agriculture and allied activities as their primary livelihood source. However, as we know that Odisha is vulnerable to various climatic hazards like cyclones, heavy rainfall etc., due to which the share of the Agriculture Sector in the State's GSDP has been declining over the years, so it becomes imperative to think about methods of farm diversification which can support the farmers of Odisha during these times of crisis. Agri tourism is one such opportunity that still needs to be explored by the people of Odisha, despite having tremendous scope for its growth and development. Agriculture (and allied activities, including animal husbandry) is the primary sector of the State economy. This primary sector offers the most potential for generating green-skills-based employment. However, Odisha has been seeing a shift from the rural sector with a noticeable fall in the number of farmers. Workers are leaving the primary sector due to inadequate irrigation, lack of proper skills, the impact of climate extremes, low market price for produce, and inadequate financial support. Not surprisingly, migration from rural Odisha to other states has risen threefold in 10 years. Hence it is evident that to achieve sustainable development rural population must learn skills related to agri entrepreneurship and techniques of farm diversification. As the villages of Odisha have their unique and traditional way of living and farming, it gives immense scope for agri-tourism activities to flourish in Odisha with proper training and skill development workshops. Therefore, this study is an effort to highlight the role and significance of agri entrepreneurship and agri tourism in transforming the socioeconomic condition of people residing in villages of Odisha. It was found that lack of government support and knowledge amongst the locals have restricted the growth of agri tourism in Daringbadi, which can be a great socioeconomic driver for the area.

Agri tourism is not new among tourism stakeholders. For any agricultural dependent economy agritourism could be a keystone for socio economic wellbeing. Agri tourism involved all the regular activities on the farms in order to provide the natural and authentic cultural aroma to the tourists. They enjoy the heritage food, which is prepared by ancient methods. The concept of Agri tourism applies as a strategy for community development at various rural areas of the globe. It acts like a hybrid process that upholds the community and revitalize the visitors through its natural aroma. The present study tries to quantify that whether the agritourism could be the catalyst for farmers or not. Secondly how the real benefits could reach to the community. This study took a case of Rajasthan agri tourism which is in infant stage. Few villages pull tourists towards the sanctity and authenticity of heritage. The present study is based on few independent factors (climate, methods of farming, access...

Today, tourism is a major source of income for many countries and affects the economy of a country. Its importance was recognized in the Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 as "an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational, and economic sectors of national societies and on their international relations." Tourism brings in large amounts of income in a local economy in the form of payment for tourists by the necessities of goods and services. It also creates opportunities for employment in the tourism sector. In the developing countries with the growth of tourism, there is also a concern for the sustainable environment as people have become more and more cautious about exploiting their natural resources. As a result, there is now increasing agreement on the need to promote sustainable tourism development to minimize its environmental impact and to maximize socio-economic tourism destinations. The aim o...

A contemporary bungalow reimagines vernacular architecture in rural Karnataka

Across the rural landscape of Karnataka, a katte or an elevated platform is a symbol of community, tradition and social interaction. Whether it’s an altar in front of a home, a public stage for gatherings or a protective wall around sacred plants like a banyan or peepal tree—a katte serves as a vital meeting spot for transactions, gossip, discussions, and even major village events.

Addressing concerns for privacy and security, the house is wrapped within a protective random rubble granite wall sourced from a local quarry nearby; its structure is designed to visually resemble a fort protecting the home.

The formal and informal living room is sandwiched in between two garden courtyards.

When a couple in their late 40s bought a parcel of land in Tiptur—around 150 kilometres from Bengaluru—they were looking to build a home for themselves and their teenage daughters, where they could regularly host their family and friends who lived close by in the neighbouring villages. For architects Avinash Ankalge and Harshith Nayak—the duo behind the multidisciplinary design firm A Threshold—a traditional katte immediately came to mind. “Their brief was to entertain everyone beyond common spaces like the living and dining rooms. And, being a family of farmers, they wanted the home to be as open and connected to nature wherever possible,” explain the duo.

Narrow slits within the concrete ceiling create skylights that flood the house with sunlight.

The plot of land was situated in a corner on a road, without any immediate neighbours or “architectural forms or context we could rely on. We wanted to bring in local elements and a vernacular design story here, drawing inspiration from traditional homes in the region,” Ankalge remembers. Noticing many houses in the area using black granite mined from a quarry a stone’s throw away, the team decided to begin their designs with a random rubble black granite stone wall that wraps around the house to form a protective fortress of sorts. Inside, wrapped between a series of landscaped plantations and skylights that “blur the boundaries between walls,” the all-white façade of the home visually seems to float against its dark outer stone wall.

The 4,200-square-foot house recreates stepped gathering platforms from the old town of Tiptur through indoor-outdoor spaces interwoven with each other, resembling verandahs at multiple levels connecting different spaces, forming semi-public gathering zones within the house. “These areas not only utilise transition spaces effectively, but also breathe life into the home—reminiscent of the lively atmosphere found in the village. The design strategically incorporates staggered, overlapping courtyards, providing captivating views of every place within the house. Everything is interconnected with gardens at every level,” Ankalge and Nayak point out.

The formal and the informal living areas are connected by a series of steps and platforms to draw on the local concept of katte.

Situated between two courtyards—one to the east and the other to the west—the living room extends into the kitchen, which opens into its own kitchen garden, a nod to the family’s farming roots, where they still grow their own produce. The first-floor bedrooms are thoughtfully designed with large sliding folding door windows, which join the rooms with the living courtyards when open; while the children's bedroom unfolds into a double-height green court, which in turn seamlessly connects to the common areas, creating a fluid connection with the overall living space.

A series of floor-to-ceiling accordion doors open one side of the kitchen into the outdoor courtyard, with the other end flowing into the adjoining dining and living spaces with a floor plan that keeps the family constantly connected to nature.

The palette across the home has been chosen for its minimalism—with white-washed walls, raw concrete slabs and random rubble masonry for the enclosure wall—for ease of maintenance. A bright pop of yellow, however, cuts across the centre of the home with the bold metal stairway, dubbed the “Charlie Chaplin staircase” for its uneven steps, which were, “a dramatic and playful addition to the otherwise tonal, muted home. And this design allowed us to cover a larger area in height within a constricted amount of space,” shares Nayak.

“In any home, especially situated in a rural town, context is so important,” describes Ankalge, explaining how many new homes built across the country disturb the vernacular architectural language of the region. “You need to take clues from the surrounding homes to blend in with the ways of the place, rather than change the landscape with what you build.” Unfortunately, building on a plot in the middle of a deserted road without another house in sight didn’t give the team any form of inspiration. “So we used the land as clues!” they exclaim. “From the rich stone that’s quarried here to the plants that were thriving around the home, and even the way the sun moved across the property in Karnataka—it all helped us build in harmony with the place.”
