Classic Whisky Tour

Glenmorangie distillery, glenmorangie distillery tour.

Enjoy a whisky tour of the Glenmorangie Distillery and a one-night stay at Dornock Castle, located in Dornoch’s beautiful, historic town. This tour is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a luxury castle break in the Scottish Highlands.

The Glenmorangie Tour is one of our more popular highland distillery tours, and it’s easy to understand why. As well as sampling a few very lovely drams at a couple of picturesque distilleries the tour also takes in some stunning scenery throughout the tour and includes one night stay in a castle steeped in Scottish history.

Glenmorangie is a distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, that produces single malt whisky known worldwide for its extremely light taste. The stretch of land in the Northern Highland on which Glenmorangie stands has been the site for alcohol production (primarily illicit) since the Middle Ages, setting a formidable legacy. Glenmorangie was founded in 1843, although it began operation in 1849. The distillation process was undertaken for decades by a staff of 16, known as The Sixteen Men of Tain, who worked year-round, with the exceptions of Christmas and maintenance periods. Expansion led to a more extensive staff of 24, now collectively referred to on bottles as The Men of Tain.

Dornoch Distillery

Dornoch Distillery is situated in the old “Fire House” built in 1881 at the rear of the Castle’s Garden. Not content with establishing one of the World’s leading whisky bars in Dornoch, brothers Phil and Simon Thompson have upped their ambitions and started making their whisky and gin on-site at Dornoch Castle Hotel, forming Dornoch’s first whisky distillery.

Dornoch Castle

Steeped in Scottish history and fascinating legends, the 15th-century Dornoch Castle stands its ground opposite the inspiring 12th-century Dornoch Cathedral. The castle offers visitors a choice of rooms, sumptuous cuisine and enjoyable wines, making Dornoch Castle a memorable experience.

On this tour will meet the Men of Tain, deeply versed in an anything-is-possible style of whisky making, who possess skills built over generations.  During the tour, you will be introduced to the signature malt, the Original and finish your distillery tour with a two-dram tasting from the Core Expressions range.

After lunch, you will be transported back to Dornoch Castle for an afternoon visit to a micro-distillery at the rear of the Castle’s Garden or a round of golf on the estate’s 9-hole golf course.

Glenmorangie is located just beside the A9 road as it passes the small town of Tain and is about a 1-hour drive north of Inverness.  The pronunciation of Glenmorangie trips some folk up. So remember the "Orange" bit is emphasized and pronounces like "Glen-mawrangie".

Unusually for Scotland, the water supply for Glenmorangie is very rich in minerals and this may account for the whisky’s flavour, but then some will argue that the shape of the stills has more influence on flavour. This may indeed be true as the stills at Glenmorangie are among the tallest in Scotland and it is claimed that tall stills only allow the lightest spirits to pass.

Glenmorangie is also an interesting distillery to visit because the whisky is offered in a very wide range of finishes. You may choose from whisky that has been “finished” in a variety of casks e.g. Fino Sherry, Ruby Port, Dry Oloroso, Malmsey Madiera, Claret, and even Cote de Beaune red wine. We would recommend the Port Wood finish as the one to go for!

If a further recommendation is required, then you may like to know that Glenmorangie was for many years the best-selling malt in Scotland.

Tours run at regular intervals, but we would recommend that you book in advance by calling the telephone number given below.

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour: Have A Taste of Our Famous Scotch Whisky!

Updated 2017-03-04

If you enjoy the experience of the Glenmorangie Distillery Tour you’ll be drooling with delight when you are spoilt for choice in the shop. You may have to restrain yourself.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Whisky distilleries have always been popular visitor attractions in Scotland, (maybe it’s the tasting that’s the main attraction) and none more so than Glenmorangie Distillery.

Glenmorangie Distillery is situated in Cadboll just outside Tain, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, about 26 miles north of Inverness. Established in 1843, the Distillery has been producing its famous Glenmorangie malt on the shores of the Dornoch Firth, in the malt heartland, and a really nice part of the Highlands.

Glenmorangie whisky is available in a wide range of “finishes” – meaning the whisky can be finished in sherry, port wine, madeira, and burgundy casks, illustrating the difference in taste the wood can make to the whisky.

Whisky Barrels

They use American only ex-Bourbon oak for maturing its Glenmorangie whisky, and every barrel is discarded after the third refill stage. The second largest and fastest growing single malt whisky distillery in the UK was the first in Scotland to steam heat the stills rather than coal fires, which can scorch, affecting flavour. They also use the tallest stills in Scotland, at over 16 feet high.

Glenmorangie whisky is widely recognised as the best single malt in Scotland! Many have declared it to be their favourite tipple, and few would argue with that.

The name Glenmorangie was taken from the Glen of Morangie Burn which means “glen of great tranquillity”. The company is unusual in that it sells virtually all product as single malt rather than producing for blending. That’s probably why it tastes so good.

Stills

Glenmorangie is still a relatively small, family controlled business, owning three distilleries: Glenmorangie, Glen Moray and Ardbeg. They support an employee-nominated charity of the year, and raise funds for the charity through personal and company events. Their famous “Glenmorangie Elegance” is a 21-Year Old malt whiskey, one of the oldest to be released from the Distillery.

No visit to Scotland would be complete without a distillery tour, and Glenmorangie won’t disappoint. The tour lets you see skilled mashmen, stillmen and warehousemen as they go about their daily work. You will also see the fermenting room, filtering processes, bottling and labelling, and the cooking of the preserves and sauces.

At the visitor centre you will learn about Glenmorangie’s pioneering experiments on the effects of wood on whisky, which have led to the “Wood Finish Range” of malts.

Guided tours start every half hour during summer from 10.30am and the last tour starts at 3.30pm. In winter tours start at 10am and groups are welcome. If a Scotland whisky tour is on your agenda, you should try the Glenmorangie Distillery tour.

One Day in Scotland

I had only one day in Scotland when our Carnival Pride cruise ship docked in Invergordon. To make the most of this brief visit, we decided to take a shore excursion. We visited the town of Dornoch and then went to Tain and took part in the Glenmorangie Distillery tour.

The Town of Dornoch

dornoch scotland

Dornoch, located in the Highlands of Scotland, is an absolute treasure. Picture this: a town perched along the northeastern coast, with breathtaking views over the Dornoch Firth. Its charm and rich history draw travelers looking for stunning landscapes and a deep cultural experience.

At the heart of Dornoch is the ancient Dornoch Cathedral. This magnificent structure seamlessly melds Gothic and Norman styles. Despite the tests of time and history, the cathedral stands proudly, lovingly restored.

dornoch scotland

After visiting the cathedral, we strolled through Dornoch, its streets lined with enchanting shops, inviting cafés, and traditional Scottish pubs.

dornich scotland

The surrounding landscape of Dornoch is equally captivating. Walking trails around the town provide opportunities to explore the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, with its rich wildlife and panoramic views. Dornoch’s history is evident in its celebrations and festivals. Events like the Dornoch Highland Gathering unite the community and showcase traditional Scottish sports, music, and dancing.

Due to our limited time, we only walked around the town for a while. Afterwards, we paid a short visit to the Historylinks Museum.

After the lovely visit to Dornoch, we took the bus to Tains. Following a short drive, we reached one of the two whisky distilleries in the town and took the Glenmorangie Distillery tour.

Glenmorangie Distillery Tour

Glenmorangie Distillery, nestled in the Scottish Highlands near the serene town of Tain, stands as a beacon of Scotch whisky excellence. With a history dating back from 1843, the distillery has long been synonymous with exceptional single malt whisky, renowned for its innovation, craftsmanship, and distinct style.

The distillery is famed for having the tallest stills in Scotland, which play a crucial role in its whisky’s character. These towering copper stills ensure only the lightest and purest vapors ascend, resulting in a smoother and more elegant spirit.

Glenmorangie has a diverse range of whiskies, each showcasing a unique aspect of the distillery’s expertise. Their core range includes the Glenmorangie Original, a ten-year-old single malt that sets the standard for Highland whisky with its creamy smoothness and hints of citrus and vanilla.

Beyond this, the distillery experiments with various cask finishes, like the Quinta Ruban, aged in port casks, and the Lasanta, matured in sherry casks, imparting complex flavor layers.

Glenmorangie Distillery Visitor Center offers whisky tours. These tours deeply dive into the whisky making process and its related skills, built over generations, from mashing and fermentation to distillation and aging. Guests can explore the traditional warehouses where the whiskies age gracefully and enjoy guided tastings that reveal the subtleties of each expression.

Discovering the Whisky Making Process

glenmorangie distillery tour

Mashing . The visit kicks off with an engaging walkthrough of the mashing process. Here, guests discover firsthand how the finest barley morphs into a sugary liquid poised for fermentation. This critical phase lays the groundwork for the whisky’s distinctive character, allowing visitors to grasp the significance of ingredient quality in the result.

Fermentation . Following this, the journey continues to the fermentation stage. Within the confines of large wooden or stainless steel washbacks, the mixture of wort and yeast triggers the sugar’s conversion into alcohol. Beyond mere alcohol creation, this period marks the beginning of the liquid’s flavor and aroma complexity.

Distillation . At the core of the distillery is the distillation process, where Glenmorangie Distillery’s acclaim for its tall copper pot stills comes to life. These stills are pivotal in producing the distillery’s uniquely smooth and refined spirit. Guests can observe the distillation as the spirit undergoes heating and condensation to remove impurities. Through this process, only the purest vapors rise through the still, shaping the whisky’s distinct character.

Aging . Finally, the tour leads the visitors into the traditional warehouses, where the magic of aging and maturation takes place. There, surrounded by casks of various sizes and types, guests uncover the secrets behind the whisky’s transformation over time. The choice of cask—be it ex-bourbon barrels or sherry casks—impacts the whisky’s color, flavor, and aroma.

Glenmorangie 18 Years Old Rebrands as The Infinita

Glenmorangie, a renowned Highland Single Malt Whisky distillery, is relaunching its popular 18 Year Old edition under a new name and design. Known for its complexity and balance, the whisky will now be available as Glenmorangie The Infinita 18 Years Old. This rebranding is part of a broader initiative by the distillery in Tain, which has been gradually updating the appearance of its entire range.

Following the redesigns of Glenmorangie The Original 10 Years Old, Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Years Old, and Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Years Old, the 18-year-old whisky now features a fresh, modern look. The new packaging stands out with its striking royal blue color adorned with infinity symbols, complemented by a radiant copper-colored label. In addition to the aesthetic changes, the new bottle is also 12% lighter than its predecessor, reflecting a move towards more sustainable packaging.

Despite the new look, the whisky's recipe remains unchanged. The Infinita is matured for 15 years in ex-bourbon casks before being split into two batches. One batch continues to mature in the ex-bourbon casks, while the other is transferred to ex-Oloroso sherry casks. After an additional three years, the two batches are reunited and bottled at 43% ABV.

Dr. Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie, describes The Infinita as embodying the distillery's>Tasting Notes for Glenmorangie The Infinita 18 Years Old:

  • Color: Honey-colored gold
  • Nose: A blend of spicy, caramelized citrus fruits with a complex floral aroma, including honeysuckle, narcissus, and jasmine.
  • Palate: Initially mildly oily, followed by flavors of nuts and spices, with hints of dates, figs, and subtle wood smoke.
  • Finish: Long and enticing, with the sweetness of dried fruits mingling with the dry flavors of Oloroso sherry.

Want to buy whisky for dad but have NFI where to start? Our expert guide for Father’s Day

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. No, I’m not talking about your dad, I’m on about buying him whisky for Father’s Day.

We all know that dads and drams are a tried and tested formula, but is it a groundbreaking one? Not in the slightest, but what else are you going to get him? Cigars? Actually, that’s not a bad call…

Real talk, most of us are pretty clueless when it comes to whisky, aside from the fact that it’s distilled grain. Am I right? About the clueless part, not the grain.

We may have heard terms like Single Malt, Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Blended doing the rounds, but absorbing a few jargony bon mots doesn’t magically make us Scotch connoisseurs.

Luckily for us, Aldi has taken the sting out of the tail by scooping gold awards for three of its sub-£20 whiskies at the prestigious International Spirits Challenge. So, now at least we don’t have to beggar ourselves to pick up a decent quality bottle.

In fact, Aldi’s Glen Marnoch Highland Single Scotch Whisky , which retails at £18.49, beat out a premium brand in the Single Malt category that sells for £45. That’s a 60% saving right there.

Metro, drinks writer Rob Buckhaven on a red background.

Aldi aside, I’ve put together some whisky-related gifting ideas for Father’s Day, and you’ll be pleased to know, there’s not a whisky stone among them.

And if you want to impress your pa with a few bits of whisky wisdom, here are some good tips and tricks.

Add water, not ice. You only need a few drops to open out the flavours and reduce whisky burn, something that recent whisky adopters might appreciate. Ice reduces the temperature of the drink and subdues the flavours.

Don’t write off blended whisky, they can be more approachable than Single Malts and some of the most popular Scotches are made up of blends.

Lastly, anything under three years old isn’t officially Scotch so if in doubt about the best age to choose, try the 10-year mark for something complex yet balanced.

Keifer Sutherland? Now that’s a blast from the past and a half. I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen him in anything recently, but watch out for a Clint Eastwood movie called Juror No.2, coming soon.

In the meantime, his new smooth, spicy, fruity and caramelly Canadian whisky has just dropped on our shores. The name pays tribute to the Red Bank, situated on Canada’s Atlantic Coast, where some of the country’s finest whisky is being crafted. Go Keifer.

West meets East in this bottle of single malt Scotch. How so? Well, it’s a Highland malt which they’ve part aged in rare Japanese Mizunara oak barrels. To put it into perspective, Mizunara oak needs to be at least 200 years old before being used for casks, and as such there’s huge demand for it among producers with a single cask costing more than $6,000. It produces complex flavours of sweet oranges, tart cherry, peach, cedar and fennel, amongst others.

I know, I know, this is pushing the boat out but talk about stunning glassware that’s also award-winning. The oblong decanter has a super contemporary design, in fact, so do the tumblers. Well, they are made from glass that’s mouthblown into metal moulds by super skilled glassblowers, I suppose, hence the spendy price tag.

Benbecula distillery begins whisky production.

Scotland’s Benbecula Distillery has begun producing single malt whisky and aims to create 350,000 litres a year.

Benbecula

The distillery’s owner Angus A MacMillan discovered the recipe in the writings of 19th-century distilling historian Alfred Barnard, which is said to be 130 years old.

MacMillan has also called on the services of master distiller Brendan McCarron, who has previously worked at the Glenmorangie Company.

McCarron was also manager at Oban Distillery and master distiller with Distell, whose brands include Bunnahabhain, Deanston and Tobermory distilleries.

Ingredients for the whisky include bere barley – which is grown on MacMillan’s croft and other land nearby, and fertilised with seaweed from the shoreline – as well as local peat and heather.

McCarron said: “The spirit produced at Benbecula will be classically maritime in style: smoky on the nose, with salty and sweet peated notes.

“This will be achieved using light- to medium-peated malted barley, so that the smoke does not dominate and allows fruity and floral notes to shine through.

“Each year a special batch of heather-peated bere barley will be produced, using a process that is both innovative and inspired by traditions of the island.”

The distillery will produce roughly 350,000 litres of whisky a year, and will use Bourbon and Sherry casks for maturation. Benbecula will also produce gin.

Located in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, the distillery’s plans were first submitted in 2020 with the proposed outlay costing £12.5 million (US$17.3m).

The Scottish government’s economic and community development agency, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), provided financial support totalling £2.8m (US$3.2m).

The distillery itself occupies a disused salmon-farming processing plant. It features a glass-walled extension in the form of a lighthouse that houses a copper pot still, which MacMillan describes as a ‘new landmark’ on the island’s rolling landscape.

He added: “After quite a journey over the past few years, it’s fantastic to see the first spirit flowing at Benbecula Distillery. There’s nowhere quite like Benbecula and we are proud to be able to play a part in sustaining our island, creating new, skilled jobs and producing a single malt whisky that will capture the essence of this unique place.

“Brendan McCarron, one of the best-known names in modern distilling, has – we believe – created something very special, making the most of the good things Benbecula has to offer.

“Our malt will be kilned over fires that we lay with peat and foraged heather – a revival of a rare malting technique completely unique in Scotland today and from a recipe last used by distilleries such as Glen Ord and Highland Park in the 19th century.

“Brendan has adapted and developed this process to create a smooth, gentle smokiness and sweet floral character in our spirit. Under his guidance, we will also be creating a variety of flavour styles.”

SPEND OVER £99.00 TO QUALIFY FOR FREE DELIVERY

Lush and invitingly herbaceous, Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest is Glenmorangie’s first whisky crafted from barley kilned with woodland botanicals.

Inspired by the ever changing natural wonder he encounters while wandering in the forest near his home, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, brought back an ancient method of kilning barley with botanicals. In this case, he chose juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers.

Evoking the scents, sounds and sights of the forest, the single malt surrounds your senses with aromas of pine, juniper and coriander, laced with wisps of smoke. Then tastes of deep-green eucalyptus, lit by rays of bitter orange, drift to a slow, gently oaky finish.

The whisky’s fragrant, wooded depths have inspired illustrator Pomme Chan to dream up her own fantastical forest. Celebrating the whisky’s flavours, her artwork is showcased on the whisky’s pack.
