See More Utah Trips

5 million happy guests and counting

Rear View Of Man Riding Motorcycle On The Desert Road, Monument Valley Tribal Park, Utah

Good morning

Good evening

"I love introducing our guests to my big outdoor playground of Utah and watching them reconnect with nature among all the towering mesas, rugged mountains, giant canyons and magical rock formations".

Travel Director

Take a scenic drive along an "All American Road"

Embark on the road trip of a lifetime on our Utah trips when we journey to the hiking haven of Kodachrome Basin State Park along the legendary Scenic Byway 12. This All American Road is one of the world’s most beautiful on earth, lined with orange hoodoos, rock archways, pine forests and sweeping vistas at every twist and turn.

Visit the Canyonlands National Park

You’ll feel like you’re dreaming as you look out over the Colorado River carving through the surreal desert landscape and flat-topped mesas of Canyonlands National Park. We’ll head to the top of the Island in the Sky for spectacular views over the landscape, plus take on the scenic hikes to Whale Rock, Grand View Point Overlook and Green River Overlook.

Explore the Bryce Canyon National Park

Filled with vast amphitheatres and ethereal hoodoos, Bryce Canyon National Park must be Mother Nature’s showground. We’ll venture into the otherworldly landscapes of rusty red spires and carved plateaus, with plenty of stunning hiking paths and viewpoints to choose from like the Rim Trail hiking path that takes you deep into this gravity-defying world.

Hike to Grand View Point Overlook

As you look out over the incredible red rock formations of Arches National Park, you can’t help but wonder if this was once a giant’s sculpture playground. We’ll take you deep into these striking landscapes, embarking on a scenic hike to reach one of the most iconic Utah attractions - the Delicate Arch - so beautifully carved out by nature’s magic touch.

Wander around the Zion National Park

You’ll tick off one of the very best destinations in Utah on our trip to Zion National Park, an enchanting land of soaring red cliffs, lush forest trails, coursing rivers and the fairytale oasis of waterfalls and hanging gardens at Emerald Pools. We’ll let you in on all the best hikes in the park, including the Watchmen Trail, Angel’s Landing and Hidden Canyon.

Our top 5 things to do in Utah

The whole state is an incredible natural paradise, and we’ll show you all the best things to do in Utah from the national parks to the top scenic drives and hikes.

Natural History Museum of Utah

This incredible museum tells the story of Utah’s natural history through more than 1.5 million objects and specimens, starting at the prehistoric bedrock and moving on to giant dinosaur fossils and fascinating artefacts from the first peoples. The museum building is an architectural marvel in itself, and you can’t miss this museum when in Salt Lake City.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts

This superb museum of fine arts showcases nearly 20,000 original works of art and you can spend hours wandering the halls with everything from ancient artifacts to modern masterpieces. Discover artworks from India, Mesoamerica and Polynesia and marvel at a Europe collection of works from the 14th to 19th centuries.

Church History Museum

Dedicated to the spiritual and cultural legacy of the Latter-day Saints Church, this Utah museum is filled with artworks, photographs, clothing, tools and furniture spanning almost two centuries of Mormon church history. You can even view the seer stone used by Joseph Smith to produce the Book of Mormon and the first edition printing press.

Best museums in Utah

It may be big on the outdoors, but some of the best places to visit in Utah are its museums, with everything from centuries-old church history to a superb collection of fine art.

Utah scones

Move over dainty British scones, and say hello to Utah scones, the deep-fried puffy delights smothered in powdered sugar and honey butter. Similar to beignets or Native American fry bread, these little pillows of hot fried dough are absolutely delicious, and they get even better when you dip it in the liquified butter melded with honey. Bliss!

Pastrami burger

Made from a beautiful blend of Greek, Jewish and American food cultures, the Pastrami burger is all Utah. Made with a charbroiled beef patty, shaved pastrami, melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and fry sauce (another local specialty), this is one of the best burgers you’ll taste in the whole country.

Green Jello

Utah loves Jell-O. As the official state snack of Utah, the locals here eat more Jell-O than any other state in the US, and it’s renowned as a beloved dessert of the Mormons. Utah even holds a statewide Jell-O week every year to celebrate the jiggly treat, and you’ve just got to try some green Jell-O on your Utah vacations.

Best food in Utah

After days spent hiking the stunning landscapes, your Utah travel guide will show you how to refuel Utah-style, from indulgent burgers to fried scones.

What to pack for Utah

People packing for a tour

Hiking shoes

With some of the country’s best hiking paths and national park trails, a reliable pair of hiking boots is a necessity for your Utah trip.

Home to some of the world’s darkest skies and several designated Dark Sky Parks, you’ll love stargazing in Utah and a star chart will help identify the twinkling constellations.

Camera & extra SD card

You’ll need your camera when you meet Tom Till, a renowned national park photographer, who will show you how to take the best photos to remember your Utah vacations.

Portable charger

With hours spent exploring the spectacular Utah national parks, be sure to bring a portable charger to keep your devices going all day.

Bring a lightweight backpack to store your water bottle, snacks, sunscreen and keep your hands free on all your incredible Utah hikes.

We did this trip during the government strike in 2013 which meant all the National Parks were closed. Intrepid did a WONDERFUL job mitigating the situation and we still got to go camping and hiking at some select state parks. Luckily, the Grand Canyon was re-opened before our trip ended which was awesome. What a finale! Thank You Intrepid for giving us an awesome itinerary despite the challenges.

This was my first time going on a group tour. I was a little concerned that traveling with a group might be difficult dealing with 32 different personalities. The group was wonderful, we had great camaraderie, everyone was very inclusive. Our tour guide randy was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful with directing us to the variety of hikes that we could choose. Michael was wonderful and our bus driver Russell was awesome. Overall it was a wonderful experience and would consider doing another group tour.

What people love about fully guided tours in utah.

the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!
Just couldn’t have been better. Extremely professional guides Robin and Sarah were highly knowledgable, friendly and organised. Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Highly recommended to everyone - would do another tour with South West Adventure Tours in a heartbeat.
Guide was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a good group

MORE ABOUT UTAH HIKING VACATIONS

Why a utah national park hiking tour.

hiker at Zion National Park

Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Paria Slot Canyons…these are big name, big adventure, big WOW hiking destinations! Probably, the question should be “why not a Utah hiking vacation?” but let’s focus on why to do one. First, you get to see the very best of Utah’s Canyon Country, which essentially offers an endless number of fantastic options. Second, Wildland Trekking takes care of nearly everything so you can focus 100% on hiking and enjoying Utah’s stunning national parks. You can travel light, as we provide gear and meals; and you can travel worry-free as we handle permits, local transportation, accommodations and more. Third, you will learn a tremendous amount about Utah’s fascinating natural and cultural history – more than you can easily learn on your own.

Finally, going with a professional Utah guiding company like Wildland Trekking provides a higher level of safety in a landscape with plenty of dangers and hazards. This is particularly true on Utah backpacking trips , where our groups head way off the beaten path into the wilderness of the Canyon Country. Knowing the routes, water sources, wildlife, logistics of drop-offs and pick-ups, how to tread through the Utah landscape with the smallest amount of impact, and more are all critical aspects of responsible backcountry travel . Backpacking with expert guides is a solid way to check all of these boxes in one motion.

Even on Bryce and Zion hiking and walking tours there are hazards that a good guide company will help you navigate. These include everything from lightning and flash flooding to simply traveling in a group and with a local expert, particularly if you’d otherwise be traveling solo.

which trip style to join?

With 6 major destinations and 4 trip styles (backpacking trips, inn-based hiking tours, basecamp tours, and day hikes), there’s a lot to choose from in Utah! Above we talk about where to go, so here let’s talk about what type of trip to do. Utah backpacking trips are great for people who want to experience the wild side of Utah and challenge themselves in canyon country wilderness. These trips take guests to amazing, backcountry oases, arches, stunning vistas, and fascinating geological sites. Utah camping tours and inn-based tours combine a diversity of exceptional hikes into a single hiking package, with either tent camping or canyon country lodges/hotels/inns as our accommodations. If you prefer comfort more, we recommend an inn-based tour; if you prefer more of an outdoor experience, then check out the basecamp tours. Finally, we offer day hikes in Zion National Park for guests who want to make the most of their time in Zion and are limited on time. Feel free to call us at 800-715-HIKE with any other questions you have!

which utah destination to go with?

We offer many options for an unforgettable Utah hiking trip. Zion and Bryce hiking tours , and Arches National Park tours are for people who want to see the famous sites, explore the source of the amazing Instagram pictures online, and be awed by Utah’s natural scenery. Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante , Canyonlands, and Paria Slot Canyons are for people who want to get more off-the-beaten-path and explore the wilder, more remote side of Utah. Many of our tours feature multiple parks, which allow you to combine the highlights of Utah’s most popular national parks with more obscure and remote destinations. (In Paria and Capitol Reef we exclusively offer backpacking trips that are centered on those specific areas.)

zion and bryce hiking tours

Zion and Bryce hiking tours are opportunities to explore and experience the most popular destinations in Utah on one tour. Wildland offers four amazing hiking vacation packages that combine these quintessential national parks into a single tour. The Best of Utah Basecamp Tour, which is a hiking and camping experiences of Zion and Bryce plus the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The Best of Utah Inn-based Tour combines the same national parks and hikes but with amazing accommodations that put us right in the action. Our Zion and Bryce 4-day Tour is exactly that – a 4-day tour to see the best of these national parks in one, relatively short, lodge-based tour. And, last but definitely not least, is our Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon Tour which is also inn-based, and combines Zion and Bryce plus the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park into one action-packed hiking experience.

when to hike in utah

Utah’s Canyon Country, including Zion and Bryce, is really great for trekking and walking vacations year round. However, which type of trip you want to join will depend on when you’d like to visit. In the Spring and Fall, all trips – backpacking trips, inn-based tours, basecamp tours – are fantastic! These months include March, April, May, September, October and November. In the summer and winter, due to peaks in heat and cold, we recommend sticking with lodge-based tours. Average temps in Utah’s Canyon Country are displayed in the table below:

The Mighty 5 Tour of Utah

5 Utah National Parks in 5 Days

OVERVIEW The Mighty Five is fast becoming one of our most popular tours.  Five of the countries most beautiful national parks all located in a small geographical area.  And yet each one is so different from its neighbors.  Born of the Colorado plateau uplift these parks offer some of the unique landscape and rock formations you will find anywhere in the world.  In addition to the National Parks, we also visit two of our states most beautiful and unusual parks.

Areas Visited: Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, Goblin Valley State Park, Deadhorse Point State Park, and Salt Lake Cities Mormon Temple Square (Temple Square has more visitors every year than most of the national parks in Utah, combined).

Generally, our groups are small with eight to ten passengers.  We use a comfortable modified van for larger groups and a suburban or similar for groups of 4 or less.

We begin the tour in Las Vegas and end in Salt Lake City. Our guides are the best in the area. They usually are natives of Southern Utah and have a lifetime of stories and insights to draw upon.  There is no substitute for experience. They provide a comprehensive overview of the history, geology, plant life, and culture of the West.

We look forward to touring with you,

The SUST staff, experienced tour specialists

Arrival Day: Las Vegas, and  St George. (The day before your tour begins)

After you arrive in Las Vegas and collect your luggage you will connect with a shuttle which will then transport you to St George, UT for your overnight stay.  Get settled in, enjoy the beauty of the city of St George. We will be getting started first thing in the morning. There will be two shuttle departures times, one at 12 pm PST and the second at 4:00 pm PM PST

Day One: Zion National Park

utah guided tours

Zion – Virgin River

We begin our Mighty 5 tour with first thing in the morning from your hotel in St George UT. Our immediate destination is Zion National Park, a short, 50 min drive away.

Zion National Park is one of nature’s greatest wonders. Gigantic red and white rock monoliths tower around you like a skyscraper city of stone, concealing pockets of abundant flora and fauna. See the Great White Throne, Angel’s Landing, the Court of the Patriarchs, and the Narrows where the Virgin River has carved out a narrow canyon with 2,000-foot cliffs on each side.

There are some great trails to walk, from easy to moderate as we explore some of the key sites in Utah’s most visited national park.

After we are done we make our way to Bryce, UT for our night stay.

(Breakfast And Dinner Included)

Day Two: Bryce Canyon National Park

Sunrise in Bryce is a magical experience. A few minutes before sunrise we will make our way to one of the  most beautiful locations in the park to enjoy the sun break the horizon and light the beautiful landscape of Bryce Canyon.

There is no other place on earth like Bryce Canyon. Made famous for its pink and white uniquely shaped hoodoos, Bryce Canyon is a great place to experience. There are a couple of hiking/walking options to enjoy as well as fantastic viewpoints to discover.

utah guided tours

Bryce Canyon Ampitheater

Later that afternoon, we drive over famous Highway 12, truly one of America’s most scenic highways, and into parts of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. No other place in the lower 48 is as remote and undiscovered as in this part of Utah. See why “Car and Driver” magazine and others have called Highway 12 one of America’s most beautiful drives.

Lodging and dinner will be in Torrey, Utah.

(Breakfast Included)

Day Three: Capitol Reef National Park

utah guided tours

Capitol Reef – Barn

Capitol Reef is Utah’s least-visited national park so don’t expect large crowds of people.   We have a morning scenic drive in Capitol Reef’s Water Pocket fold.   We visit an ancient Petroglyph panel.  In the fall, seasonal fruit can be picked in the old pioneer orchards, and small pies and ice cream are available in the nearby Gifford House Museum year-round.

In the afternoon, we head for Utah’s most unusual State Park, Goblin Valley. The rock formations here are unique and do have an unearthly and strange look about them. Then, we drive to the John Wesley Powell History Museum in Green River, Utah. John W. Powell had a significant influence on this part of Utah. He and his group were the first to successfully float down the Green and then the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. Powell named a number of the rivers and mountain ranges found in the area.

Lodging will be in Moab, Utah, that evening.

Day 4: Arches and Canyonland National Parks

We travel to nearby Arches National Park.  Here your guide will help you to explore some of the most amazing sites in the world.

Mighty 5 Tour in Utah

Turret Arch Through An Arch

The arches of the park are true wonders beyond comparison and will leave you awed and amazed that these stone structures are still standing.  We will take a walk up to the famous Landscape Arch, one of the longest spans of any arch in the world. Additional sites visited include the Windows Section where more than 9 arches are laid out for your view, Balanced Rock, Park Avenue, and the Delicate Arch viewpoint.

After we have finished in Arches we will give you some time to see Moab UT or if the group chooses to see some more of the local sites.

That evening we will have our farewell dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Lodging will again be in Moab, UT.

(Breakfast, Dinner Included)

Day 5: Deadhorse Point, Canyonlands National Park, Prehistoric Museum, and Salt Lake City

utah guided tours

Deadhorse Point

After breakfast, we travel to the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park and visit a few of the key sites including a walk to Mesa Arch and a stop at Grand Viewpoint. We also visit one of Utah’s most beautiful State Parks, Dead Horse Point. Here, a fantastic view of the canyons of the Colorado River is offered from a towering mesa, hundreds of feet above the canyon.

We begin our journey to Salt lake city making a stop in Green River for lunch, followed by a stop in Price Utah at USU’s Eastern Prehistoric Museum, where we will visit some informative dinosaur and Fremont Indian exhibits. From there, we go directly to Salt Lake City for our final night stay.

Overnight Salt Lake City

Day 6: Depart Salt Lake International Airport

Make your way to the Salt Lake City Airport for your departures home.  The Hotel offers a convenient airport shuttle throughout the day.

Important Info

Permit: There is a $6.00 fee per person that can be paid online through recreation.gov, ahead of time or at the trailhead.

We always have to keep an eye on the weather before any hike in a slot canyon due to potential flash flooding.

Like all slot canyons in the Southwestern United States, the crack in the Earth was carved in the sandstone by flash floods, which adds to the feeling of adventure.

The Drive: We’ll start with a ride on paved highway. Then there’s 9 miles of unpaved terrain - taking approximately, we will drive this stretch in the Can-Am UTV or Suburban. The tour takes a total of 3 hours of driving, and the drive is one of the great elements of the adventure.

We do offer a refund on deposits if weather is a factor.

Don’t Just Take Our Word For It….

Tripadvisor reviews.

At Buckskin Gulch he guided us through the slotcanyon, telling lots of interesting and fun facts. He took all the time we needed. We sat down for a nice picknick an wandered through the canyon. We thougth this was it, being very satisfied so far, but on our way back he even took us to see a wonderfull spot at Staircase Escalante. We could never have made it with our RV. Jeff is a great host, friendly, fun and kind. We certainly recommend his tours.
